LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Should I Renew My Membership?

The quick and easy answer is - absolutely!

Today I can say with the utmost confidence that we have come a very long way in a very short period of time in showing a greater value in being an NCSG member. The Guild has always had the ability to show you the value, but recently, we've taken this to a whole new level. With your support and that of the many volunteers and leaders who have stepped forward in this great industry, things are continuing to happen on a national scale.

Right about now you're saying to yourself, stop with all the hype and tell me, what am I getting for my dues? Let's start with the NCSG Certification. We've taken this once overlooked certification to a whole new level through accreditation. We've been able to do this with the help of just about every chimney sweep in the industry. We're already at Stage 4 of the process and we're still on track for our projected launch in 2023 of our newly accredited certifications.

This is huge because it gives you something more than just being certified; it gives you the recognition on a national level that you are in fact part of the highest caliber of professionasl in this industry as recognized by an independent accreditation body. This recognition will open doors you would have never imagined. We can see many states and local governments continue to add additional requirements to home service providers in the validation of their professional ability. This accredited certification will keep you a step ahead of your competition.

Another benefit is that the Guild has always been your advocate in the chimney and venting industry! Things happen fast in both government and in this industry, so having the right people in charge of this member benefit was extremely important. Under the leadership of Region 4 Director, Debbie Wiedwald, the advocacy committee has been able to respond quickly in combined support with HPBA and others. Debbie continues to grow the committee, so reach out to her and become a volunteer because you never know – you just might be the one to help change government policy.

Let's move on to education: The newly formed education committee has hit the ground running under the new leadership of Region 5 Director, David Stewart. Things are happening at a pace many of us will need to keep up with. That's the kind of leadership you expect in putting your member dollars behind the NCSG.

There's a whole lot more I could cover like the certification committee under the leadership of At-Large Director, Joe Sauter and Region 3 Director James Owens; bylaws committee led by Matt Mair; membership committee led by Michaele Dempsey and Tim Smith; governance committee & TAC Line led by Steve Scally.

My hope is that in all the things I've listed, you're seeing that being a member has value and we're not just taking your membership for granted. Remember, we believe that the NCSG has a duty to continue: "Serving Those That Service America's Chimneys!" So stay a member and be a part of the change!

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION

We Got Your Back

It was the Fall of 1990, November to be exact, when I first joined the National Chimney Sweep Guild.

Like many, the reason I joined was not the Guild or its activities specifically, the real reason I joined was that it saved me money when it came to certification, coupons and the convention. Membership paid for itself.

basically taking care and protecting them from harm. “Backing someone up” is also an idiomatic expression meaning that you will support that person in word and deed.

If you are like I was way back in the day, it was only a financial decision without the understanding of the bigger and more important issues. This is where the NCSG shines and why being an NCSG member is crazy important. What are some of those? Here is a partial list just to name a few:

Back then, I had no idea what the NCSG was doing for me as a sweep, I only saw the dollar signs and made the decision to join solely based on a “me” decision.

As time has progressed, there is so much information I have learned about the National Chimney Sweep Guild than I could have originally imagined. I have learned things I never knew; like what it has done for me as a sweep. But more importantly, I now know what it is currently doing for me as a sweep, not just for me, but for you, for us, for the sweeping brotherhood in its entirety.

Four words now sum up my understanding of the National Chimney Sweep Guild and why being a member is critically important: They have my back!

A lot of sweeps out there have no idea that the NCSG has their back; they have and they will! They are actually the ONLY group that represents all sweeps that do.

Having someone's back is an idiomatic expression meaning you're watching out for that person/sweep;

• NFPA 211 committee members' representation

• Governmental regulation oversight

• Help is only a phone call away (TAC line)

• Dealing with OSHA on members' behalf

• Trend and direction setting

• Certification and accreditation

Many of us have uttered the following phrase: “I have your back,” and what that means is we will support and help the other person when there are troubles. The reason why the word “back” is used is because we cannot see behind us, from where enemies can attack us. It is a great picture of helping, serving and protecting our brothers and sisters in soot.

8 NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE

When the NCSG appoints members to serve on the NFPA 211, 54 and 31, they are protecting us as sweeps and helping to serve our interests of burning fewer homes down while protecting sweeps. They are watching our back.

When the NCSG governmental regulation oversight committee reviews sources and articles weekly and monthly, and if necessary calls for action, they are watching our back from enemies who either innocently or purposely seek to do our industry harm.

When the NCSG is seeking to have their certifications (CCP, CCJ, and CCR) accredited, they are not only watching our back, but strategically planning for our future!

When members serve the NCSG by manning the TAC line for sweeps who call with questions seeking advice or help, they are showing by word and deed that they have our back.

When the NCSG sued OSHA to protect the sweep’s interest, allowing us to continue to

serve our clients by sweeping and servicing their chimneys safely and quickly, they had our back and do so even today.

The NCSG has put your membership money to use defending our interests and industry from overbearing bureaucrats. This money is being spent on OUR behalf as sweeps to protect OUR industry and livelihoods!

Today, I am not a Guild member due to just any cost savings on my end, though it does help. I am far better educated on the real issues of NCSG membership, I am part of the NCSG because of what they continue to do for me, for you and for us.

This reality continues. Knowing the board members of the NCSG personally, seeing their heart, hearing their words, watching their deeds, I know they will continue to: Have My Back!

Consider renewing: now you know the better reasons why you must!

LET'S GET TECHNICAL

Best Benefit from the NCSG: The TAC Line

As the Technical Chair for the National Chimney Sweep Guild, I get asked a lot of different questions.

One of the questions that has been around lately is what the best benefit of being a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild actually is.

You have Jim Brewer who answers on gas appliance venting, gas logs and NFPA 54 where he chairs that for all of us as another perk for our industry. Jim has so much knowledge that he is willing to share with anyone who needs it when it comes to gas.

There are just so many to choose from. My passion is sharing knowledge with anyone who will listen. That is why I wanted to be a part of the TAC Line.

By far, I feel this is one of the best benefits for any company member or employee member in our industry. I feel this does not get used enough. I also feel that owners who are voting members may not know or share these lines with all their employees. We have some of, if not the sharpest people of their expertise on these lines willing to answer questions for you at any time.

You have Ed Ridgeway to answer any questions regarding Smoke chambers and castin-place liner installations. Ed has been around for many years and has done many cast-in-place liners.

You have our past president, Jasper Drengler on Factorybuilt fireplaces installation and replacement. If you call him, he will give you any information you’re looking for.

You have John Bently as an expert on Dryer Vents. Again, another sweep who has been around for a long time and who probably has seen or done just about anything Dryer vent.

You have Micheal Sergestrom on IRC and NFPA 211 code questions. When it comes to understanding these codes and interpretations Mike will not lead you wrong. I do not know too many more people in our industry that has a higher knowledge of this. If he gets stumped, Which I have not seen, he will find out. He is passionate about this industry and compliance with the codes and standards. Michael answers the stainless-steel liner phone line as well.

If that is not enough, you have Bill Ryan on chimney inspection, documentation and NFPA 211. Bill is also a home inspector and is extremely passionate about this inspection process and our industry. He is a secondgeneration sweep, so he has been around for a bit as well. Both Bill and Micheal Sergestrom also teach these codes and standards and inspections across the United States.

You also have Jeremy Biswell's answer for customer service and customer communication line. Between Jeremy and his wife, Brandi, I do

As a member, you have access to multiple advisors from the industry’s leading professionals, known as the Technical Advisory Council . * This benefit is available to all NCSG members. To access the TAC Line and phone number extensions, go to ncsg.org , and log in to the member portal.

DID YOU KNOW? TAC

*Be advised that advice given by NCSG’s Technical Advisory Council (TAC) reflects best practices of the chimney sweeping industry. However, we are unable to account for any particular type of situation since regional variations in construction practices and additional environmental, physical and geographical factors necessarily vary the level of service appropriate for a particular fireplace and/or chimney. Additionally, local laws and ordinances may govern and/or supersede the information and any recommendations provided. Final determinations are the responsibility of a local professional with firsthand knowledge of the situation, and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Neither NCSG nor any member of TAC will be held liable for any damages whatsoever resulting from the use of or reliance on information provided by anyone associated with TAC. not know a company that has made it more important for themselves as chimney experts to be completely engaged in the relationships between clients and their teams as well as the relationships in their teams and management etc. They take this to the highest level. You cannot go wrong if you have any questions about office management or customer communications.

You also have one of the smartest people in the industry as far as oil goes in our master sweep in John Pilger. John has been an advocate for our industry for a long time and if it has anything to do with oil, John knows. He also sits as the NFPA 31 oil liaison for the CSIA.

When it comes to sweeping and anything related to sweeping a chimney that you want to know, you have board member Joe Sauter. He has the answers or knows how to get them for you. This man is extremely passionate about this trade, and he wears it on his sleeve.

Then finally you have me, Steven Scally, who is answering anything masonry related to a

chimney. I took over for Chris Prior whom I get to say is my mentor. I have taught with Chris and learned from him as well. As you all are aware, Chris is a little busy with the PriorFire Retrofit going around the country, among other things. I have been in this industry for over 40 years and most of that time I have been honing my craft of masonry as it is my passion. I was one of the many folks who helped build the twisted chimney at the old tech center.

As you may be able to tell, I am very passionate about NCSG's TAC Line and hopefully more of you out there use it or start using it more.

Tech Chair, Masonry chair, at-large director, and the secretary for the NCSG Proud to serve.

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT

Adjust Your Sails for Hard Times

You don’t have to be a fortune-teller right now to see the way the immediate future is shaping up: Inflation. Rising interest rates. Global political unrest. There’s no question we will probably see tighter times ahead. The question is, how bad will it get and what do we need to do as business owners to recession-proof our companies?

Here are a few of the lessons we can take from the downturns, recessions and tough markets of the past that will help us weather the coming storms of the next 18-24 months.

Get Your Cash Reserves Topped Off Now

Do the math to figure out how much you need every month to keep business-critical operations running. Then put away the equivalent of three months’ worth. This is an emergency fund that provides some cushion and a lot of peace of mind as you navigate your company through this. The worst decisions are made under financial duress when you have few good options and a compressed amount of time to act. Savings can help insulate you from those conditions. If you don’t have these savings already, start setting money back now or arrange a line of credit; it may get harder to do later.

Raise Prices as Soon as Possible

Inflation is eating into your margins, making it more expensive to deliver a good product and service. Raising prices in response to this

SPARK MARKETER 13AUGUST 2022

The Newest Innovation from Spark Marketer

pressure is not exploitative, it’s necessary to safeguard the level of service and customer commitment on which you have built your reputation. If your costs continue to rise, don’t be afraid of adjusting prices to match. To compensate for higher prices, look for ways of bundling services together that present a good value to your customers, especially when it benefits both of you to do it that way. A good example of this is bundling a sweep and inspection service with a dryer vent cleaning service in the same call. The customer can get both for a lower price, and it increases the value of each truck roll by lowering the costs of providing both services.

Never Stop Your Marketing

Too many businesses hit hard times and the first thing they cut is the marketing budget, effectively cutting off the oxygen supply at the exact wrong moment. You may need to dial your spending back, but keep actively marketing, doing the scrappy and creative things you did in the beginning when you had no marketing budget to speak of. We saw this in 2008 and again during the pandemic: businesses that market through hard times come out ahead when things turn around. The ones that stop, often don't make it out alive. You may not grow in a recession (although you CAN and many do), you just have to survive longer than your competitors. Marketing is a business-critical activity, not a luxury. When the hill gets steep, it’s time to push on the gas, not let up. If you need to save money here, the trade-off is your time investment, doing more on your own to make up the difference.

Focus More on Existing Customers

They are the lifeblood of your business, and you'll need to keep as many as possible to stay healthy. Show them the love in tangible ways. Make sacrifices they can see and appreciate when needed. Enlist their help in finding your next best customers. Communicate more frequently; the average chimney company only emails customers once or twice a year, if ever. Design products, service packages, annual service agreements, and payment options that meet their current financial needs (things will be tougher for them, too). Our new Customer Engine platform is perfectly designed to help with many of these customer-focused activities.

14 NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE PAID ADVERTORIAL Request a demo: sales@sparkmarketer.com
Recession-proof your company. Increase staff productivity. Delight your customers.

Consider Going Up-Market

It’s no secret that the wealthy don’t feel the effects of inflation as acutely, and are more able to pay you for your services, no matter the price. Put together a preferred-customer service package that caters to wealthier customers. They are always willing to pay to get the best service level with the least hassle and they can be a godsend for you in a down economy. We help clients run these kinds of programs using our Customer Engine platform, so please ask us about it. We can help you recession-proof your business by going after a more profitable kind of customer.

Start Doing More with Less

Look for ways to multiply your effectiveness while lowering costs. A great example of this is business automation software (Customer Engine again!). It automates common routine communication tasks, which allows you to maintain a very high level of customer communication while reducing the number of hours it takes. With this software and service, you can see as much as a 50% increase in staff productivity and get as much as a 70% increase in revenue by closing the gaps where opportunities are commonly lost (missed phone calls, estimate follow-ups, forward scheduling, more). These are exactly the kinds of results needed when faced with tighter conditions.

It's About Mindset, Now More Than Ever

A recession doesn't always mean mandatory misery and suffering. You don’t have to participate just because it’s happening all around you. You could just decide not to get swept up in the doom and gloom, and choose a different story for yourself, your employees, and your company. Shifting your mindset often starts with asking a better question. Ask yourself these questions and see what ideas they stimulate: What is your biggest opportunity in a down economy? Buying a competitor who is folding? Streamlining operations and improving profit margins? Adding right-sized new services that help attract better customers? What would have to change in your business right now to

make that happen? If you made up your mind to use this hardship to sharpen your product offering and actually GROW revenue and profit through the squeeze, what would be the first step in that plan? You may find some of your most lucrative ideas come in the next 18-24 months. Don't allow the market and political news to dictate your success or your opportunities.

Like the country song says, “If you’re going through hell, keep on going.” No matter what happens in the near future, it’s going to be temporary if you’re ready for it. And who knows? It could help you shake off the complacency that comes with easier times and end up being the best thing to happen to your business in years. Please let us know how we can help you.

ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

Advocacy – A Member Benefit

The National Chimney Sweep Guild is the leading advocate for the chimney and venting industry. Through close monitoring of state and federal policy, to active involvement with codes and standards, the Guild's advocacy committee continues to protect members' interests in the long-term.

root efforts by members is important and the advocacy committee can help mobilize members geographically. Below is a map as of the end of June 2022 showing states with Fuel Choice and Electrification legislation. NCSG Advocacy members also attend the HPBA monthly government affairs committee meeting to receive legislation updates.

Codes and Standards

Advocacy committee members also monitor Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) fall protection changes. NCSG is a member of the European Federation of Chimney Sweeps (ESCHFOE) and the Chimney Sweeps Association of Ireland (CSAI).

Government Relations – monitors federal, state & local government to identify policy that could affect chimney & venting professionals. The Advocacy committee is asking members to complete the advocacy survey to share feedback on policy issues affecting members’ businesses. NCSG will be developing talking points on legislation impacting the chimney services industry. The advocacy committee works with similarly aligned organizations such as the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association and state and regional chimney sweeping associations. Contact me at debbie@blackburnschimney.com to be involved.

Net Zero government policies will impact chimney services work in the future. Guild members are encouraged to share with the advocacy committee legislation proposed in their area so members can be informed and communicate with their representatives. Grass

NFPA 31 Committee – NFPA 31 is the Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment. The NCSG has had a seat on this committee since the early 1980s. Steven Scally took over on this committee in May 2021. He sat in on the first meeting April 5, 2022. Steven is learning the process of how this committee works and where NCSG fits in to this committee. The April 2022 meeting was four hours long and much information was discussed. Most of the recommend changes are fluid related as in wording for the oil going into the burners etc. Those sub-committees are

16 NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE

now in discussion about some of those fluid changes and currently NFPA 31 does not have a date for the next meeting that we know of. If there are any changes that any of our members want for the NFPA 31, please submit them to Steven so he can get them submitted. Contact: Steven Scally, firesidesweeps@comcast.net.

NFPA 211 Committee – NFPA 211 is the Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances and is relied upon as a standard in the chimney service industry. NCSG has maintained a seat on the committee since the early 1980s and Jim Brewer has served on the committee since the late 90s. Many important provisions of the standard were proposed by the NCSG including the direct-connect requirements when installing inserts in fireplaces, flue sizing requirements and the chimney inspection standard. The chimney inspection standard was authored by a committee of the NCSG and proposed & accepted into the 2000 edition of NFPA 211. The chimney inspection standard has changed the industry in regards to chimney inspections and is a prime example of why Advocacy and

committee participation is important. Contact: Jim Brewer, jim@rooftopsafetyusa.com.

NFPA 54 Committee – NFPA 54, also known as the National Fuel Gas Code, is the nation’s leading authority on the installation, venting and use of all types of gas appliances. NFPA 54 also provides the technical requirements for gas found in the International Residential Code and the International Fuel Gas Code so the work of the committee has far reaching application throughout the United States. NFPA 54 contains several chapters related to the installation and sizing of gas venting systems so it is important for chimney service professionals to be aware of those requirements and involved with shaping those requirements. The NCSG has maintained a seat on this committee since 1998 and Jim Brewer has served as the committee rep for NCSG for all of those years. Contact: Jim Brewer, jim@rooftopsafetyusa.com.

OSHA Task Force – The NCSG has been working with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) for about 15 years trying to reach a workable approach to fall protection for the work we do. Many of the

17AUGUST 2022

common practices used by chimney service techs for fall protection aren’t recognized by OSHA (roof assist devices like the Goat or RidgePro, lifelines secured to trees, vehicles or other substantial objects, etc). Anytime you are dealing with the government, the pace of progress is very slow but it seems like we may be getting close to some definitive answers from OSHA. OSHA regulates every workplace with one or more employees, so this applies to nearly every chimney service company and is another excellent example of why advocacy through the NCSG is so important. Contact: Jim Brewer, jim@rooftopsafetyusa.com

International Relations – The International Relations Committee will be representing NCSG at the European Federation of Chimney Sweeps (ESCHFOE) meeting in Poland in August of this year. A full report will follow in future issues of Sweeping magazine. NCSG continues to follow a fast-changing world of chimney sweeps and how they can have an impact on the environment not just homeowner’s safety.

Many countries are actively involved with local and national governments as the world moves toward a less favorable view of natural gas, oil and wood. As we move into the summer season's regional events, it is a good time to remember how important membership is to both the national and local guilds.

To me, my membership in both the NCSG and various state/regional groups helps me connect with other members and business owners through the local educational events each group produces. These classes are a great opportunity to learn from other members and see other perspectives on both the technical work we do and more abstract business education. Our company has been in business for 13 years now and I have been a member for all of that, and every event I attend I learn something new. (This recent convention's keynote was GREAT in my opinion!).

Our company, Black Moose, just hosted our first event on behalf of the NH and VT Guild. We were unable to hold Sweepfest for the past couple years, but it was great to finally do it again. Our crew spent a few days building some practice chimneys. We then did a live burn and relined them the following day. I had a chance to play with some pre-insulated liner which I don't use often and some of my newer staff got to do some great masonry and relining work. Everyone had a good time and we even saw some new faces.

There are a lot of benefits to membership, but the connection to these events, both national and regional, are probably the biggest benefit I see for our business here. As I write this, Sweepfest is done and I will be attending the NY Summer Workshop at the end of July where I will represent the NCSG at their local trade show. I will no doubt learn something new and try to put it to use.

So please, as renewal time approaches try to make plans to also attend some of these events – not the least of which is the upcoming Chimney Expo in Valley Forge, PA in August. Even if you take one thing away from that event and put it into use in your business you will get your money's worth from your membership.

Up the mountains or down the shore, these are sayings we use here in the Philly area. I am blessed living so close to both mountains and sandy white beaches. My wife Mary and I along with our children and grandkids, balance our time between these two wonderful places each year. That’s my message, this month. I want to touch on the time off topic.

As I sit at the beach on Memorial Day weekend, I never have could imagined being a sweep would be so good to our family. Were there lean times? Yes, but this trade has a way of bouncing back quickly. Through training/conventions the guilds provided, we changed our business for the better, allowing us the resources to travel. I always hear it at our shop: “Where are you going now?” When I'm at work, I always give it 110% to allow me to take time off. Just plan it, save up, and do it!

If you are not in this position in life, change what you do to allow time off. One major change to our business was just three stops a day for the service trucks. Doing less, but selling more! A game changer. Who would have thought this process would work, and I learned it at convention. This process, along with our weekends off, is less stress on everyone in the company. Try it!

How’s it going guys? In this issue I wanted to touch on a subject I’ve had many people ask about - What are the benefits of being a member of the NCSG? So I wanted to share a few of them with everyone. For starters, your board of directors are hardworking and passionate about the industry and what it does for its members. We truly care about the companies/members that we serve.

For me, one of the biggest benefits is obtaining multiple certifications that will be accredited. These accredited certifications will give the credential holders more recognition as a chimney and venting specialist throughout the industry and country.

The advocacy committee is looking out for any changes and regulations that may impact your business and our industry as a whole. Additionally, the committee is working directly with OSHA on your behalf when it comes to regulations and safety standards that affect us all.

We have an ethics committee that is there for complaints or violations. We are here to help resolve and remediate issues that may arise. We have a technical support advisory team that you can reach out to for guidance and assistance when needed.

The NCSG website is a very useful tool for members and consumers alike. There is a wealth of information such as the Homeowner Hub for consumers and the Manual Library for members. If you haven’t had a chance to browse the website, I would suggest you take a few minutes to review the wealth of information that is readily available to you.

Lastly, let’s not forget about NCSG’s incredible conventions and trade shows. The last convention in Las Vegas brought in around 800 people and we are expecting a higher turnout next year. These conventions and trade shows are a great way to meet new people and the suppliers who support our industry and regional and national guilds.

The chimney services industry is strengthened when members work together. Professional guilds provide opportunities for members to network, learn together, share differences, advocate for the industry and support each other. Customers benefit when professionals are committed to best practices.

Blackburns Chimney Services has been a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild since 1990. My favorite benefits of being a member of NCSG are learning and networking opportunities. I enjoy attending convention, talking with colleagues, and gaining insights to challenges I am having. Our staff has improved their delivery of services due to the sharing of information from other NCSG members.

Membership in the Guild shows a commitment to professionalism. Doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals have active membership organizations. Many blue collar trades are represented in guilds and unions.

I am honored to represent Region 4 on the NCSG board. Please reach out to me about any recommendations and concerns. Let me know if you are interested in being more active in the Guild and I can help link you with various committees. The Guild is stronger with membership involvement.

Thank you, Marshall Peters, Educational Coordinator, for your extensive tour throughout Region 4 and other areas providing learning and certification opportunities. Mark Your Calendars - Region 4 is hosting an evening social and networking event at Hatfield’s Goode Grub located at 16700 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, OH 44111 on Thursday, September 8 from 5-8 pm. This event is prior to the Cleveland area certification class scheduled on Friday, September 9. Please reach out to me at debbie@blackburnschimney.com to let me know if you can attend. You do not have to be registered for the September 9 class in order to attend the Regional event. Hope to see you soon! Watch for more details on the NCSG Facebook page.

Hello Region 5! I hope you all have had a wonderful summer and hopefully some vacation time! As you have most likely deduced by now, this month’s issue is all about membership. I’ve learned some great things from the membership in Region 5 of what it means to be a member! It means being passionate about the industry, about the Guild and about our regions getting involved! From Texas and New Mexico all the way up to North Dakota and Wisconsin, our region is blessed with energetic and involved members! Our region has been happy and willing to travel to educational events and to volunteer at the events as well. Thank you! We all gain so much more when everyone is involved and active! Being a member of the NCSG isn’t just a box to check or a decal to put on your trucks. It’s a family of amazing people that want everyone involved to succeed.

For the past year, I have served as the chair of the membership committee. We have taken a deep dive into what it means to be a member, what member benefits look like, and what our organization can do for you all as members. It’s been a great time working with the committee! Our committee consisted of Brittney Burton, Jason Clough, Kacie Krominga, Robert Ornelas and Thaddeus Vinson. We met monthly and sometimes twice a month over video for one hour to accomplish our tasks. Those tasks included: evaluating current member benefits and discounts provided by third party vendors, adding new benefits, adding new swag to give out to all members, revamping the magazine, finding more advertisers, and several other tasks. We had a great time and I believe we were very successful!

I am extremely grateful of the entire committee and all of their successes over the past year! With all that said, there is some positive changes happening throughout the NCSG. I have stepped down from the chair position as Michaele Dempsey takes over. I’m excited to get some more Region 6 representation into the committee! Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few sweeps west of the Mississippi. Our committee has endeavored to equally represent all sweeps throughout the country and shine a light on each geographical area.

What’s next for me is I have been asked to chair the new education committee and to fill it with awesome members! If you are passionate about education in our industry and are ready to get involved on a deeper level, please reach out to me or Tim Smith, our co-chair.

All of the wonderful committees within the Guild are looking for more volunteers to help! We need member involvement to keep us going strong! Be more than just a yearly check and a sign on the door. Get involved, volunteer, and help us grow the guild bigger and stronger!

Membership and who it is – that's you taking a professional step in your business, being a part of an organization that you choose to support and build. The joy of gathering with professionals all over the United States and beyond, are soot brothers and sisters of the world of Sweeping.

Swapping educational ideas, secrets from each other, and many Guild benefits.

Best of all, building an educational empire together that we continue on as our legacy from one generation to the next.

I want to thank each member for allowing me to serve as your Region 6 Director. I personally have been a member of National Chimney Sweep Guild since the early 1980s. While paging through our membership roster, we have many dedicated members. I have truly believed in, trusted, and loved our organization for many years.

What it means to be an active member, get involved, volunteer–it’s easy. Ask where and when you can help at conventions, H.O.T. activities and trade shows. All it takes is a email or phone call. Being involved gives you a real perspective on your organization. Your ideas are more than welcome. Sit on a committee, then run for a directorship.

During our convention this year, many members shared their convention experience with me personally. Some saying it was the best convention ever. Members were friendly and engaged with each other. Saying how much fun and activities the guild provided, thanks to many of the vendors

As your new membership chair, I’m excited. I will be in contact by email, texting, visiting and calling to the best of my ability. If you know someone that interested in becoming a member please feel free to make contact with me at prochimneymichaele@gmail.com. We need your input and ideas to be the best we can be. Hello Chimney Industry!

I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer and getting to spend time with loved ones. I know things have slowed down for many of us, and that can bring on some anxiety. I understand, but this too shall pass. We have an opportunity to challenge our perspective and find new opportunities! One of the blessings about the slowdown has been that we have had the time to work on things that we have perpetually put on the back burner. These were things that needed to get done, but we never allocated the time to do it. Honestly, it has also been good for the mental, physical and emotional health of myself and our team. We have been able to catch our breath, look back and see all the things we have accomplished. Bob Ferrari said one time to be intentional about finding beauty. Those words really stuck with me. I have never been intentional about that, but I am working on it. Beauty can be a lot of different things, but for me it has been watching our team being amazing mothers and fathers. Watching team members get married and start new chapters in their lives. Personally, I have found beauty in the places I have visited with my family and getting home earlier and playing with my sons or sitting on the front porch and just talking with my wife. I have found I am less stressed, and I am in the moment, soaking it all in. Thank you, Bob, for encouraging us to seek beauty. It is there, but sometimes you must be intentional and look for it.

This also gives you more time for training. The slowdowns never last for forever and if you focus on training and sharpening your skills you will be ready to roll when things get crazy. The CSIA is here to help you sharpen those skills. We have classes and educational opportunities all the time. Please go check out our

Upcoming Events

website (www.csia.org) and see what classes may be of interest to you. As always, we are here to help you! If there is a class, you want or if you have an idea, please let us know.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to introduce to our new Executive Director, Bill Wald. After conducting a nationwide search with hundreds of applicants we have found the person that is taking CSIA to the next level. Bill has an incredible background running associations in many different states, and that experience is going to benefit all of us. Bill even has experience in planning the NFL Super Bowl! We are so excited to have Bill on the team. He is settling into his role and is an amazing addition to our already superstar staff. Our industry is a tight knit community, and we look at ourselves as family. I am thankful to be a part of this family, and I am thankful to have Bill be a part of this amazing family. Bill like the rest of the CSIA staff and board are here to help. I would encourage you all to reach out, shoot Bill an email or give him a call and welcome him to the family.

It is my pleasure to serve as the CSIA president. It has been a fun and fulfilling learning experience. I am always excited to hear your ideas and feedback. We are in this together and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

A WORD FROM SPARK MARKETER

One of our favorite things to do when searching through Facebook is to go through the chimney groups and see what everyone is talking about. We love the way that everyone jumps in to help and give advice. But the ones we love the most are the posts that outline some of the crazy things you all see when on location, so we get to see the crazy!

Then we hear about the conversations around the experience and see the comments come rolling in about how people seem to "know more than the experts” because you can “still burn wood in it”. We all get a good laugh, roll our eyes, or shake our heads before going on about our business while wondering why that thing hasn’t blown up by now.

What does this have to do with what Google thinks?

Given the importance of being found on Google, it’s not a far stretch to say Google is the authority when it comes to, well, Google. Yet we find a lot of people are not paying attention to what it has to say about what they deem to be the important stuff. Just like when a trained chimney professional goes into a house and tells the people living there what the codes say is important and what the best practices are for them to get the best results with their unit, Google does the same thing. Whether you, the professional, are believed or not is a different story. Same thing with Google. After all, your online presence might "still be working just fine."

The 3 most unbelieved things that Google states is important

#1. Have great original photos and videos for your content. This means for your website, social channels, ads, etc. Google did a survey in early 2017 and found that A) 90% of purchasers are more likely to use a business that has photos on a search/map results page and B) 74% of shoppers say that photos on the

results page indicate a more reputable business.

By March of that same year, photos started appearing in search results. Where there were only a few in the beginning, there is now a lot of photos in search results. Google is advising posts on Google Business Profiles as well as on websites. Now the real question around photos becomes, can Google tell what’s in the photos?

Yes! With the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI), Google is getting better and better at knowing what’s in those photos. One of the differentiators is the clarity of the photograph and that’s where the higher quality original pictures come to play.

In this Google’s Business Profile Help document (https://tinyurl.com/uuuksbrf), "How to improve your local ranking on Google," the company says that “not only does adding images improve local rank and visibility, but that it likely increases conversions as well.” Stated another way, the quality and share of images in search helps with rank, visibility, and conversions.

Joy Hawkins, owner of Sterling Sky, Inc. conducted a recent case study, Do Images Impact Ranking on Google? In this case study, she found organic ranking improvement for website results by using images that were similar to websites that already ranked. Accordingly:

1. Larger/better quality photos are better for ranking.

2. Having a photo that matches what Google is looking for can have a positive impact on ranking. Having a photo that doesn’t match can have a negative impact.

3. How much images improve ranking likely varies based on the query or industry.

If you are searching for a couch, this makes perfect sense, right? Visuals matter here. Yes, but they also matter for service businesses in the following ways:

1. People want to know what you will do when you are in their home. Using a series of photos or a video helps you tell that story to the potential customer.

2. Telling stories with photos and videos builds trust and trust is everything when it comes to securing new business for a service company.

Are You Keeping Up with what Google Thinks is Important?
CARTER HARKINS & TAYLOR HILL SPARK MARKETER
28 NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE

3. Having great images allows Google’s AI to identify your services and help your company show up on search results.

4. Because Google’s intent is to show the best results in a given area for the searcher, Google trusts those clear original photos that can be identified. Once Google understands what your business does through pictures, it lends confidence to your business with Google and the consumer. This is why high-quality photos and videos can make a difference in both search and conversions. So now that you know about it, will you do it? That’s up to you.

#2. The importance of great reviews, and a lot of them. While Google seems to be a little vague when it comes to reviews, https://tinyurl.com/Googl-rvw, saying Google reviews provide useful information and help your business stand out. Reviews show up next to your Business Profile in Maps and Search, there have been a lot of studies showing the importance of ranking on Maps and organic. Here is a great article in Search Engine Journal highlighting a few. https:// tinyurl.com/google-impact.The reason we talk about this a lot on Spark Live and write about it often is we still get owners that insist reviews are not that important. Most recently, we spoke to a plumber who has been losing market share in a rather large market that argued that reviews are not important to a company as big as his. During the conversation, we could tell he was agitated every time reviews were brought up. When he was finally asked why this was a sore spot, he said every marketing company he had talked to told him that his business reviews were an issue they needed to tackle but he just knew that was not true!

In all transparency, that was not the only thing they need to do, but when you are losing market share to much smaller companies and they have better and a lot more reviews than you, the first thing you must do is stop the bleeding! It does no good doing heart surgery if you allow an artery to bleed out. So yes, we talk about reviews a lot. We talk about them because they are important so you stand out in a way that attracts your potential consumer.

#3. Google’s mission is to show the searcher the most relevant information that matches the searcher's query. In Google's own words: Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. That's why Search makes it easy to discover a broad range of information from a wide variety of sources.

Its mission is not to hurt your business, take over the internet, or make your life miserable. Everything

they have done and will do is to accomplish or add to that mission. It doesn’t mean that those decisions will not negatively affect your business, because they can and do. In December 2021 there was a Google Local update that affected a lot of businesses both good and bad. The map listing is now relational as to where the searcher is relative to the business.

While this has changed a lot of results in some areas, there are also factors that Google is having issues battling on Maps that have also led to companies seeing themselves lower in the local listing. The biggest factor is map spam. This is when there are a lot of fake listings in a given area. Many of these have been traced back to companies selling leads, which in itself is counterproductive. The very companies you are purchasing leads from are the ones choking you out in your local area. Google knows about this problem and says it’s working on solutions. However, it’s not for you the business owner, it’s to make the search more useful to the searcher. Without the searcher, Google ceases to be the business it is.

In conclusion: Google really does tell us what they deem important if we will only listen.

COACH’S CORNER

Make the Trends Your Friend?

Several years ago, a client shared with me some words of wisdom that his fractional CFO (Chief Financial Officer) shared with him, that was the phrase: The Trend is Your Friend! Once I heard this, the wisdom of this phrase came through to me loud and clear. It made so much sense and backed up a belief I had shared for years with clients of the importance of tracking and measuring your business. It's a part of that often-heard phrase that is an ingredient of success: You Have to Know Your Numbers!

What does the term trends mean? It refers to the business environment, your function in where you operate. Knowing the trends in a business will assist you in making the best decisions for the company and the workforce. The trend involves understanding the past and the present to build a strategy for the future. It also alerts you to the key strengths and weaknesses you have as a business. This comes from knowing the trends of your community, and community here is defined as the people who do business with you and also may do business with you.

The trends survey the changing tastes and desires of your consumer. As an example, like it or not, there is a growth in the electric fireplace market. Now you may not personally care for or even like this trend, but the truth is this trend is happening, and it is founded on the regulations that are going into place in many market areas. Is this a trend that you want to take advantage of or do you want to let someone else profit from it and dig your heels in the ground and fight it?

A past trend that many took advantage of was the introduction of gas into the hearth industry. This started in the early 80s, a time when many of us looked at gas logs as a joke, but others moved on it. As the years progressed, others moved on this movement to gas.

Another past trend was the video chimney inspection device. At one time this was considered a joke by many in the industry, something that was unneeded, but today has become a tool on just about every service truck and many companies now have learned the benefits of a video inspection of the interior of the chimney, many even now calling a chimney inspection by the name of a camera inspection (a phrase not found in industry standards or journals or the standard of care).

As you look at your business, what are the company trends you see, what is moving higher in sales and demand, and what is dropping? Even more importantly what is delivering to you the highest profits and what is a low product service or product? This is all about the trends.

What are the trends that are producing recruitment results? It is not a matter of simply saying nobody wants a job, or nobody wants to work. It is knowing and understanding the trends that will entice a person to seek you out for an illustrious career.

It extends even further into understanding consumer buying habits, Recently in a conversation with an HVAC contractor in the northeast, he alerted me that the number one fuel in his state for home heating was now the electric heat pump, a heating system that used to only be accepted in the warmer states. Is this a trend that will affect chimney service? You better believe it as these do not have chimneys and venting systems!

JERRY ISENHOUR CVC SUCCESS GROUP
Supplied Image 31AUGUST 2022

It even extends into the trends that drive your marketing. Knowing the trending keywords and subject matters will enable you to build the marketing to attract your prospects to you and keep your existing customers engaged.

It will roll down to building a system of tracking and measuring the trends in your own business first, and then opening your eyes to the market trends. Let’s face it, we are in a fast-changing world, a world that is consumed by a lot of unrest, a lot of distrust, a supply chain in arrears, and rapidly rising inflation with fears of a recession. One of the key things is to gear your marketing to the trends the consumer is looking for and then have those trends as a part of your marketing outreach.

As an example, as I authored this article, I searched for the leading trends in fireplaces today, they were:

1. Frameless fireplaces

2. Convertible fireplaces (able to burn wood or gas)

3. Three sided fireplaces

Extra-large fireplaces

Indoor-outdoor double-sided fireplaces

vertical fireplaces

sided fireplaces

Exposed metal fireplace venting systems in the room

9. Unique stone fireplaces

10. Linear fireplaces

Having those keywords in your marketing may assist in the organic reach of your website to touch your community as they search for the products you may need, such the words Media Fireplace have often been the keyword for an electric fireplace.

Making the trend your friend is a strategy that can assist you in building your business to the level you envision, think about how to build the tracking and measuring processes where you know the trends that will take your business to the level you envision. Open your eyes to what is happening deep within your business and what is happening in the outside world that will affect your business, it is how success happens!

This issue of Sweeping traveled in my backpack across the mountainous highlands of Peru, the Incan Trail, and eventually one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. I'm so thankful for this industry, which provides both the means and the flexibility to have a fulfilling career as well as the ability to explore everything the world has to offer!
