Books, Workshops, Food, and Fun

The70th Latino Book & Family Festival, held at MiraCosta College on October 15, brought together award-winning authors, community organizations, and breathtaking cultural entertainment. Thank you to everyone who came and to all the presenters and sponsors!

Attendees had the chance to meet authors, get some books, learn about community services, attend workshops, visit exhibitors with all kinds of information, enjoy singing and dancing, and taste some great food.

On behalf of Empowering Latino Futures, a huge thank you to KSDY-50 for the station’s involvement, the interview, and coverage of the Festival. Empowering Latino Futures and Education Begins in the Home appreciate the coverage KSDY-50 provided at the last minute and offer sincere thanks.

Libros, talleres, comida y diversión Latino Book & Family Festival

ElFestival Latino del Libro y de la Familia, en su edición número 70, se llevó a cabo en MiraCosta College, el 15 de octubre. Reunió a autores galardonados, organizaciones comunitarias y entretenimiento cultural asombroso.

Take Care with the Flu

Countyhealth officials are encouraging San Diegans to get a flu shot. Cases of the flu historically increase during fall and winter as many people move gatherings indoors.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu shot every year. The CDC also says you can get a flu and Covid-19 vaccination at the same time, including the new bivalent booster dose.

Get the vaccine at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies; it is covered by medical insurance.

No health insurance? Get vaccinated at one of the County’s six public health centers or a local community clinic.

The Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving: Acclaimed Author Victor Villaseñor Holds Sacred Celebration at His Home in Oceanside

“There’s only one race, the human race, with different cultures,” says the award-winning author Victor Villaseñor. “We need to start coming together, uniting.”

That is what the Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving is all about, and Victor would like to invite everyone to his Oceanside home to take part in it.

Victor did not learn to read until he was 20, a fact he believes allowed him to maintain a strong spiritual connection to universal stories untarnished by formal education.

The Snow Goose tradition started when he was promoting his acclaimed book Rain of Gold. An Indigenous man told him, “Rain of Gold is a book that shows the world how we indigenous people feel and think about the Mother Earth and the Father Sky… The sky has got to become sacred and beautiful again. And we look up at the eagle soaring. And then, our Mother Earth. Bring those back.”

Not knowing how to ‘bring them back,’ Victor promised to consult with the spirits of his grandmothers.

That night, he dreamt of flying across the sky with snow geese as they spoke to each other.

Victor Villaseñor is the author of the national bestsellers Rain of Gold, Thirteen Senses, Burro Genius, and other critically acclaimed books such as Crazy Loco Love, Wild Steps of Heaven, and Macho! “The big male in front breaks the wind so that the females and the young use 30% less energy to keep up. But the big males that they keep changing in front don’t lead. They ‘follow in front’… Because if males led, they’d go too fast, and the females and the children would run out of energy, and they can’t follow,” he says.

The males also protect the flock from predators. “And that’s the way humans used to live, before organized religions and organized governments.”

He says when he woke up, his grandmother pushed him to write everything down, and that was how the Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving book was born, in one night’s writing.

His masterpiece Rain of Gold, published in 1991, tells the story of his family’s migration from Mexico to Southern California.

He says the ability to tell this tale was given to him by Indian knowledge.

For Victor, this sharing of information is the backbone of a writer’s existence. “As soon as you start taking credit, you develop ego and self-importance,” he says.

“I don’t know any more than you do. I just have experiences I can share with you,” he explains.

Victor says the French author Albert Camus summarized for him the tools to become a writer. “He said, ‘The story of one human being told deeply enough and well enough is the story of all humanity.’ I totally agree.”

Victor’s book Burro Genius is one of his most well-known works. He says this intimate tale of the hardships of his childhood has served as a bridge to the souls of others.

“If I write truthfully enough and well enough about intimate little things, then other people are going to say, ‘oh, I’m not alone in the world.’”

He believes Thanksgiving is the most wonderful celebration the United States has, a celebration of peace and respect between the Pilgrims and the Native people.

“So, I want to bring that cooperation globally,” he says.

Everybody is a Writer

“I didn’t write my books. I’m not in charge of it. I receive and I give…,” says Victor.

Victor believes everyone should be a writer, creating a journal written out in longhand, not typed.

“One for every year,” he says. “And then you go back 10 years later…and they give you a reflection of who you used to be.” He says a journal can be a place to write what might cause us embarrassment and work through it.

“The opposite of depression is expression,” he says he was once told. “When you express something in a journal and be creative, it takes it out of your overcrowded mind and makes room for something wonderful to come in.”

He also encourages everyone to write their family history, their “Bible” as he calls it.

“Interview parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles,” he urges. “Write your family Bible. Because the time has come for humanity to part the Red Sea, the global Red Sea of doubt and fear. We get rid of doubt and fear collectively, and we pass to other side as the Promised Land, full of hope and love and harmony. And the byproduct is peace. It’s time for us all to become our own writers.”

Victor explains, “When Rain of Gold first came out, a woman in a crowd leapt up and said, ‘You wrote about my family, and I’m German.’ That’s what good writing does. Good writing, everyone can identify with it. It goes beyond cultures.”

Burro Genius is a universal tale as well, he says. “The story has not changed for kids in school today, so the story is universal and everlasting.”

El Día de Acción de Gracias Mundial del Ganso de Nieve: El aclamado autor

“Solo hay una raza, la raza humana, con diferentes culturas”, dice el galardonado autor Víctor Villaseñor. “Tenemos que empezar a unirnos”.

De eso se trata el Día de Acción de Gracias Global del ‘Snow Goose’, y a Víctor le gustaría invitar a todos a su casa de Oceanside para que participen.

Víctor aprendió a leer a los 20 años, un hecho que cree que le permitió mantener una fuerte conexión espiritual con las historias universales que no se vio empañada por la educación formal.

La tradición del ánsar nival comenzó cuando promocionaba su aclamado libro Lluvia de Oro. Un indígena le dijo: “Lluvia de oro es un libro que muestra al mundo cómo los indígenas sentimos y pensamos sobre la Madre Tierra y el Padre Cielo… El cielo tiene que volver a ser sagrado y hermoso. Y miramos al águila volando. Y luego, nuestra Madre Tierra. Tráelos de vuelta.

Sin saber cómo ‘traerlos de vuelta’, Víctor prometió consultar con los espíritus de sus abuelas.

Esa noche, soñó con volar por el cielo entre gansos de nieve que hablaban entre sí.

“El macho grande al frente rompe el viento para que las hembras y los jóvenes usen un 30% menos de energía para mantener el ritmo. Pero los grandes machos que intercambian el lugar de enfrente no lideran. Ellos ‘siguen desde adelante’… Porque si los machos lideraran, irían demasiado rápido, y las hembras y los niños se quedarían sin energía y no podrían seguir”, dice. Los machos también protegen al rebaño de los depredadores. “Y esa es la forma en que los humanos solían vivir, antes de las religiones y los gobiernos organizados”.

Dice que cuando se despertó, su abuela lo empujó a escribir todo, y así nació el libro Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving, en una noche de escritura.

Él cree que el Día de Acción de Gracias es la celebración más maravillosa que tiene Estados Unidos, un festejo de paz y respeto entre los peregrinos y los nativos.

“Entonces, quiero llevar esa cooperación a nivel mundial”, dice.

Todos somos escritores

“Yo no escribí mis libros. No estoy a cargo de eso. Recibo y doy…”, dice Víctor.

Su obra maestra Lluvia de oro, publicada en 1991, cuenta la historia de la migración de su familia desde México al sur de California.

Dice que la capacidad de contar esta historia se la dio el conocimiento indio.

Para Victor, este intercambio de información es el fundamento de la existencia de un escritor.

El libro Burro Genius es una de las obras más conocidas de Victor. Él dice que esta historia íntima de las dificultades de su infancia ha servido como un puente hacia el alma de los demás.

“Si escribo con la suficiente veracidad y lo suficientemente bien sobre pequeñas cosas íntimas, entonces otras personas dirán: ‘Oh, no estoy solo en el mundo’”.

Victor cree que todo el mundo debería ser escritor al crear un diario escrito a mano, no a máquina.

“Uno por cada año”, dice. “Y luego regresas 10 años después… y te dan un reflejo de quién solías ser”. Él dice que un diario puede ser un lugar para escribir lo que podría causarnos ver-

güenza y así resolverlo.

“Lo opuesto a la depresión es la expresión”, dice que le dijeron una vez. “Cuando expresas algo en un diario y eres creativo, lo sacas de tu mente abrumada, lo que deja espacio para que entre algo maravilloso”.

También anima a todos a escribir su historia familiar, su “Biblia”, como él la llama.

“Entrevisten a sus padres, abuelos, tíos”, insta. “Escribe tu Biblia familiar. Porque ha llegado el momento para que la humanidad divida el Mar Rojo, el Mar Rojo global de la duda y el miedo. Nos deshacemos de la duda y el miedo colectivamente, y pasamos al otro lado como la Tierra Prometida, llena de esperanza, amor y armonía. Y el subproducto es la paz. Es hora de que todos nos convirtamos en nuestros propios escritores”.

Victor explica: “Cuando Lluvia de oro se estrenó, una mujer entre el público saltó y dijo: ‘Escribiste sobre mi familia, y yo soy alemana’. Esto es lo que la buena escritura hace. Todo el mundo puede identificarse con ella. Va más allá de las culturas”.

Burro Genius también es un cuento universal, dice. “La historia no ha cambiado para los niños en la escuela de hoy, por lo que la historia es universal y eterna”.

Martha Alvarado is an awardwinning school board member, a bilingual teacher, a Marine Corps veteran, and a daughter of Mexican immigrants. In 2020, she led the U.S. Census counting efforts in VUSD, ensuring accurate funding for our federally funded programs.

Alvarado collaborated with elected leaders to open a Covid-19 testing and vaccine center, keeping our students, staff, and families safer. She has also ensured that students have the technology needed to thrive. This year, she was instrumental in opening five community schools with wraparound services. Carlson believes in access to a high-quality education for all students and in the importance of preparing all students to be future-ready.

Ricardo Favela Fallbrook Union Elementary School District Trustee Area 3

Ricardo Favela was born and raised in San Diego’s North County, in the town of Fallbrook. He is the son of a migrant family who labored in the groves of Fallbrook and Valley Center. From an early age, Ricardo became involved in social and racial justice issues affecting the Mexican community and witnessed historic events that arose from social conflict in the area.

In 2018, Favela worked with community members to transition Fallbrook’s at-large elections to by-district elections so that the city would comply with the California Voting Rights Act. This group formalized into Voces de Obreros, Campesinos y Estudiantes (VOCES) de Fallbrook, which helped run a slate of Latino and Latina candidates for the town’s first by-district elections in 2020. Ricardo, and the Fallbrook squad, won their seats on 4 governing boards, breaking a long-standing history of all-white governance in the town. He serves as the Trustee for area 3 for the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District.

Favela has served on the County Service Area 81 (County Parks and Recreation) for over 10 years.

Anna Pedroza Trustee and Board President, MiraCosta College District Area 1

Anna Pedroza’s career as an educator began at age 20, as an instructional aide at Torrey Pines High School. From there she taught Spanish, English, and English Language Development (ELD). She now serves students as a school administrator.

She believes that her educational experience and knowledge of the community and its stakeholders provide her with a unique lens to support the MiraCosta College Board in fulfilling its mission. Her goal is to create policy that supports the successful attainment of personal, academic, and professional goals of the students.

Pedroza has served in several regional, state, and national educational organizations, including Secondary Education Council Representative for the Association of California School Administrators, Region 18; Association of California School Administrators; Management Association of Sweetwater School District; and MAEGA Scholarship Board.

A long-time resident of Del Mar, Pedroza holds a master’s degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s from San Diego State University.

Dr. Carlos Ulloa Board of Education, San Marcos Unified School District

Dr. Ulloa is a proud graduate of the public school system and is the father to a grown son and grandfather to two grandsons. He grew up in Escondido and has lived in Carlsbad since 2001. He is the son of immigrants; his mother immigrated from Mexico, and his father, from El Salvador.

From an early age, he wanted to become an educator. While at San Diego State, he tutored middle and high school students for the California Mini Corps Program.

Since 1991, Dr. Ulloa has served as a primary and secondary teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and university lecturer. He also served a four-year term as Governor Brown’s appointee to the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC), an advisory body to the California State Board of Education. As an education commissioner, Dr. Ulloa and his colleagues were responsible for the development of the state’s math, ELA, and history-social science frameworks and the adoption process for instructional materials. He was a champion and steward as the state implemented the FAIR Education Act in the K-12 history–social science framework.

It was called upon more than ever this year in the lead-up to the November election. The 250-member organization of women and men responded to eight requests from local governments and civic organizations to moderate candidate forums.

Fourteen League presenters and eight researchers worked with different community groups, preparing presentations on State Propositions and Local Ballot Measures. The Voters Service team also attended numerous voter registration opportunities around North County.

LaLiga de Mujeres Votantes alienta a todos los votantes elegibles a hacer oír su voz al votar el 8 de noviembre. La democracia funciona solo cuando todos participan.

La Liga de Mujeres Votantes se fundó hace 102 años, cuando las mujeres recibieron el derecho al voto. Desde entonces, se han dedicado a proteger y ampliar los derechos de voto y garantizar que todos estén representados en nuestra democracia. La Liga es una organización comunitaria no partidista que trabaja para empoderar a los votantes y defender la democracia a través de la promoción, la educación y el litigio a nivel local, estatal y nacional.

La Liga de Mujeres Votantes del Norte del Condado de San Diego (LWVNCSD), una organización sin fines de lucro 501(c)3, se enorgullece de celebrar su 60 año en el Norte del Condado.

Fue más solicitado que nunca este año en el período previo a las elecciones de noviembre. La organización de 250 miembros de mujeres y hombres respondió a ocho solicitudes de gobiernos locales y organizaciones cívicas para moderar foros de candidatos.

Catorce presentadores de la Liga y ocho investigadores trabajaron con diferentes grupos comunitarios, preparando presentaciones sobre propuestas estatales y medidas electorales locales.
