Students Take Next Step on Their Path to Higher Education

Bill de la Fuente welcomed nine student recipients, their parents, friends, and sponsors to the 6th Annual Bill de la Fuente Scholarship Foundation ceremony at the San Marcos County Office of Education on June 15.

Bill de la Fuente recibió a nueve galardonados, sus padres y amigos y a patrocinadores en la sexta anual celebración de la Fundación de Becas Bill de la Fuente en la Oficina de Educación del Condado de San Marcos el 15 de junio.

La defensora de los derechos de padres de familia e hijos de Palomar College, Carmelino Cruz, felicitó a los estudiantes por su éxito en la high school. Habló con ellos sobre el próximo capítulo en su vida estudiantil, al alentarlos a continuar con sus esfuerzos sobresalientes en este siguiente nivel y a acercarse a amigos, su familia y la comunidad cuando lo necesiten.

Después, el orador principal Cipriano Vargas, el actual presidente del Concejal de Educación de Vista, habló con los alumnos sobre el ser la primera persona en su familia en asistir a la universidad. Les pidió buscar ayuda en la comunidad y devolver el favor algún día.

La Fundación de Becas Bill de la Fuente ayuda a construir una comunidad más fuerte y mejor educada al proporcionar becas a estudiantes que las hayan ganado mediante sus logros y que deseen participar en la educación superior, según su sitio web.

De la Fuente ha fundado varias organizaciones, en su mayoría orientadas hacia latinos. Una de estas es Comerciantes Latinos Asociados, la cual guía y proporciona recursos para los empresarios latinos. Cuando se jubiló de la organización en 2015, la Fundación de Becas se creó en su honor.

Palomar College parent/ student advocate Carmelino Cruz congratulated the students for their success in high school. He talked with them about this next chapter in their student career, urging them to continue their outstanding efforts at this next level and to reach out to friends, family, and the community when in need.

Next, the Keynote Speaker Cipriano Vargas, the current Board President of the Vista Board of Education, spoke to the students about being the first member of their family to attend college. He told them to reach out to the community for help and to pay it forward someday.

The program then provided a Community Recognition Award to Corie De Anda, a longtime bilingual teacher, the director of the Hermanitas Program of MANA of North County San Diego, and the incoming president of Route 78 Rotary.

The Bill de la Fuente Scholarship Foundation helps build a stronger, better-educated community by providing scholarships to students who have earned them through achievements and who envision participation in higher education, according to its website.

De la Fuente has founded several organizations, geared mostly toward Latinos. One of these is Comerciantes Latinos Asociados, to guide and provide resources to Latino business owners. When he retired from the organization in 2015, the Bill de la Fuente Scholarship Foundation was created in his honor.

They also count on a team of certified enrollment counselors who assist anyone in need in applying to Medi-Cal or CalFresh.

“They will sit with them and guide them through the whole application process. If for some reason they do not qualify, we have funds that provide what we called ‘unfunded care’”. Interpretation services and medical care are also provided in Spanish and Arabic.

Recently passed AB133 extended medical benefits to undocumented persons in California over 50. “It can be a sensitive topic, but it is a federal assembly bill. We, of course, follow those rules,” says Varga.” Now more people qualify for Medi-Cal and have more health access and peace of mind, regardless of immigration status.

Nos explica que, si alguien padece diabetes, se receta la insulina, pero si el individuo es indigente o no tiene acceso a refrigeración para la insulina, no tiene dónde conseguir alimentos sanos, se afecta la salud. En este caso, Neighborhood Healtcare lo contacta con personas que ayudan en todos los aspectos de la salud, al trabajar en conjunto por ejemplo con Interfaith Community Services, que les permite ayudar a los pacientes a encontrar tratamiento para las adicciones o vivienda.

En el esfuerzo por vacunar contra Covid, sus enlaces con Universidad Popular y los distritos escolares los han acercado más a los hogares de las personas y han creado más confianza. “A veces el transporte es un reto. La hora es importante porque la gente trabaja. Pudimos identificar y servir a más zonas micro con tasas más bajas de vacunación.

Elegimos escuelas en esas zonas, bodegas, extendimos los días de servicio y el horario para un acceso más fácil”, dice Varga.

connects them with partners that assist in all aspects of health, offering, for example, a partnership with Interfaith Community Services that allows them to direct patients in need to addiction treatment and to housing.

In the Covid vaccination effort, partnerships with Universidad Popular and school districts have increased the proximity to people’s houses and created more trust. “Sometimes transportation is a challenge. The time of the day matters because people work. We were able to identify and serve more micro areas that showed lower vaccination

rates. We picked schools in those areas, groceries, expanded days of service and times for easy access,” says Varga.

Covid also put a spotlight on controlling underlying conditions, she says.

“If somebody is unable to come to us, we can send our mobile health team to monitor patients’ health or distribute vaccines. We also provide food distribution in Escondido twice a month through Feeding San Diego,” says Varga.

Due to the increase in Covid cases, some of the programs had to be halted, or to continue partially or virtually. “We try to overcome the digital divide with videos and access to devices,” says Varga. These programs are returning to pre-Covid status little by little.

Neighborhood Healthcare’s senior program connects seniors with diabetes managers, medical resources, and dental services, and helps monitor blood pressure. Meanwhile, the social aspect is covered through a program that includes doing potlucks to connect.

Project Dulce is a nutrition program to learn about diabetes care. Educational classes for teens and prenatal care are also offered.
