Nightm

This year I put my hand up to help out at this years event but wanted to do more than a road closure or control. Luckily, I had some time to spare and so headed up on the Thursday to help out. Met the directing team at the Toolleen Hotel for lunch and then headed back to Motel to book in for the weekend. Lunch was great it was good to catch up with the Directing Team and throw back a soft drink and enjoy a meal. Toolleen Hotel puts on a great feed and a good meal break stop if you are ever out that way. Pulling into the carpark at the pub brought back so many memories, I could not count the number of times I competed in Rallies where the start was in the carpark or utilising the old Hall near the pub. Most events that started here were navigational events in those days, and I learnt of lot of my navigating skills back then from some really formidable navigators and some drivers too. Back then I still helped when I could but was keen to to compete. I remember doing road work with Ian Boyd. Ian had a really nice Datsun Stanza and whilst I really enjoyed doing the road work, it did not take me long to ask Ian if I could buy the Stanza, as luck would have it, he agreed to sell it to me. Well that Stanza did some miles, it competed in Motorkhana’s, Autocross and even a sprint round down at Phillip Island, where the gear box broke (I‘m not gonna say who broke the gear box except that it was not me), we had to be flat towed home it was a very slow trip. Just another big adventure I managed to get myself into. The Stanza lasted a long time and was finally retired and given to a family member who drove it for many years after that but not in events only on the roads. Friday morning headed over to the show grounds to get stuck into it, wasn’t really sure what tasks I was going to be involved in at that point, I just wanted to be helpful and work. I was very nicely surprised to be handed a set up book, a driver (Thanks John & Max, for your car, conversation laughs and occasional sook from Max in the back) and a nice vehicle to go out into the forest and set up some stages. I kind of wondered at that point what it was going to be like out on the roads given the amount of rain and bad weather in the weeks leading up to the event, but was truly surprised. The roads were great, there were a few corners with puddles on the inside but very few and I reckon 2 to 3 cars taking the correct driving line on those areas impacted would have cleared the water anyway.

moves We set up the stages assigned leap frogging with Kim & Brian and whilst it was a long day it was a good day. Very impressed with how the event was designed, maximum use of roads with being able to benefit double use and less officials, (although I was told plenty of people wanted to go out there and “help” because of the nature of the event and the area, I think that’s a really good rep to have as an event.) Dinner next at one of the Palling Bros Brewery, fantastic meal and nice beer. Off to bed for the night ready for another big day on Saturday – EVENT DAY YAY!!!!!! And what a good day it was, woke up to blue sky, not even a cloud up there, headed off to just check and finish the stages, which set me up well as that meant I had done all the stages, which given my rolen of Safety Officer, was a huge help. First Car was due to start at 17:00 and the enthusiastic crews started to line up at the Start Book In Control. You could feel the excitement. Start Control, manned by the amazing Jan (no, not Jan Woods), had the fire up and running as the air was definitely getting colder, but no signs of rain. All rugged up, Jan and her team manned this control all night, each time I saw her she had an additional layer on, it was really really cold out there. As the crews headed out they had an excellent event ahead of them, 7 stages:SS1 Welcome, SS2 Good Friday, SS3 Black Cat, SS4 One Eye, SS5 Alien Camp, SS6 Darrochs, SS7 Wynott Dam. Magnificent roads in most cases and an event that flowed. I planted myself inside rally HQ near the radio officials and started paying attention to the communication coming from the stages. Alex, from the radio team, had put up a computer screen that showed a birds eye view of the competing cars as they traversed the course. This was not to see how they were placed in competition, but in fact a view of the cars completing or not completing each of the stages. Whilst it required human intervention to update the data it worked well and I used this most of the night to keep an eye on the crews. It also enabled me to be more proactive in being in the position to follow issues with crews up with service crews really quickly. I’m not sure who’s idea this view was or who created but it worked for me given the event was not using RallySafe.

Nightmoves Cont.

Whilst most of the crews who did not finish due to mechanical issues/offs/or mishaps where able to keep in touch with their crews, it was good that I was able to reach out to them and give them updates as they came through. Of interest was that both car 3 & 6 did not finish leaving the VCRS championship points wide open. This means the remaining rounds of the VCRS are going to be full of some very interesting competition the way we all like it. The night seemed to come to a close very quickly. Time just flew by. All competing crews where back and all DNF’d crews were found/collected or dragged out and accounted for. It was 1.30am and this official needed some sleep. The highlight of the event for me came on the Sunday on my way home. I stopped at two businesses in Heathcote before I left. First stop I could not help eavesdrop some younger teenage kids bragging to each other about the spectator spot on stage 4, they thought it was great and apparently parents where happy to leave them out there to finish watching all of the cars. The second was at a servo as I was filling my car and someone I did not know saw the windcheater I was wearing and said how happy the locals are when NCCA runs events up here, especially since covid. This person had been out the forest spectator spot with the family in the evening and I really don’t know what business they have in Heathcote but they said it sure made a difference. What a way to finish the weekend well done NCCA. As I said earlier this is not a rally report, so I hope the humour and content appeals to some of you. Hopefully see you all out there again soon.

ELL, THIS IS the last magazine before the AGM.

I am hoping that as many of you members as possible will come along on the night. We all know that not many want the responsibility of being a Committee Member, but, consider it. It is a great chance to “get involved” and get to know more of the members of the Club. I have been Club Secretary for quite a long time now. Whilst I enjoy the position, I feel that it is time that I take a break for a couple of years. SO….I am hoping that someone out there would like to “step up” and take over the position for me. I will still be happy to represent the Club at Motorsport Australia at State Council meetings and report the happenings back to the Club. So, please consider this, I would truly appreciate the break. The Nissan Nightmoves was held recently and by all accounts, was yet again a triumph for the Club. Well done to Kim, Aidan and the team. These events take a lot of time and effort to put together and we should show our support and congratulate them for doing this. Valley Stages is another showcase piece for the Club, scheduled for September. Mark your calendars and get out there and support the Club! Our Motorkhana teams are continually out there doing their best and having a great time whenever they can. Keep going everyone, have a great time and maybe we will be champion club again. The other disciplines of the sport are Track/Sprint and Autocross. There are many days and places available for participation in these avenues. Just check out the websites for more info or go to Motorsport Australia website for details of upcoming events. I have heard that there will be another touring event coming up later in the year. The last one was very well supported by members. (Unfortunately, I was interstate) Hopefully, I will be able to come along to the next one. If you have any ideas for events/get togethers let the Committee know. If you want to be in the draw for the special effort raffle (which is drawn at the Presentation Night) you need to come along to a normal Club meeting. Therefore, if you come along to the AGM, you will instantly go into the draw for the prize. Remember our AGM on the 8th July at the Manningham Club, Thompsons Rd Bulleen. - Vicki Curry, Secretary.

Another fiscal year about to end and to date, a very good year for the NCCA. With the running of Valley Stages, our Khana and just recently, Nightmoves, it has been a productive, still restrained year. I visited Nightmoves for a general “Hello” and caught with a few bods I had not seen for a while. Congrats to Kim and her team for putting on another enjoyable event and also congrats to all the winners and participants.

It is almost AGM time, please consider a nomination for a position on the committee, it is a great group and we would like to encourage new faces! At last, I had found a good condition fuel tank for the SSS from a guy in Sydney, removing the tank to fit a Mad Dat tank in his SSS project. Also came across some tank fittings from a Nissan Wrecker in Adelaide to replace my rat chewed ones. I did have an issue with the filler neck, nothing that 3 doses of boiling water to soften the rubber up to allow me to squeeze it into place. What a job! Well, looking forward to the next fiscal chapter of the club and another good year. My SSS resto continues and I hope soon, it will be finished. See you at the AGM, early July! Gordon Ledwidge, Treasurer.

I ALL,

The memberships are going strong, with the number up to 366. Last month the club ran the Nightmoves Rally out of Heathcote. It was good to see so many club members out doing road closures, I made a weekend of it and had a great time camping in the forest. As you would have read it’s AGM time. It’d be great to have some new members on the committee to help steer the club. If you’re not able to be on the committee, we still need members to vote.

Important info for all you out there with Club Permits, there’s a new mailing address to send your paperwork to for signing. Please send to PO Box 605 Hurstbridge, Vic, 3099, and don’t forget to include a stamped self-addressed envelope so the signed form can be returned to you. - Aiden Peart, Membership / CH Plate Officer.
