The rain gods held off for us this time with mid 20 degree weather and sunshine
Easy to read flowing roads meant good competitive rallying with little oops’. Ste couple of minutes. All in all, a good day was had by all.
Now the results. Myself (Russell) and Cary came 3rd VCRS, Steve and Tony 4th 7th VCRS, Aaron van Winden and Jesse Stirland in 8th VCRS, Stewy and Daniel ing a DNF on SS3. PLEASE NOTE. Nissan Nightmoves won’t be NCCA championship round.

Ada VCRS
The Ada River Rally ran out of Rokeby into the competitive area that is commonly called “Powelltown”, although it didn’t even get to that town. Four stages north and south of the main Powelltown-Noojee road run twice were the competitive stages of the rally. The rally had two components – the VRC and VCRS components. This report is mainly directed at the VCRS component, running on 6 of the event’s 8 stages. NCCA made up six and a half of the 23 VCRS crews, showing the great level of support which this club gives to the series – along with conducting two events, the Nightmoves and Valley Stages. From the start of the first stage NCCA crews were struck by a couple of set backs which didn’t bode well for the rest of the event, but that was not to be the story that played out. In SS1 our top competitors, Steve Porter/Tony Robinson (Mazda RX7), struck a rock which ruined a wheel and tyre and cost about 5 minutes to replace, while Tim Smith/Heath Lenne (Datsun 180B) broke their accelerator cable and lost even more making a repair. But was this the end? No way Jose! The rest of the crews stepped up to the plate with Russell and Cary Seabrook (Subaru) gaining 3rd place on the stage, David and Emma Lawrance (Datsun 1600) 4th, Mark Watson/John Marson (Stanza) 5th, Aaron van Winden/Jesse Stirland 9th (Stanza). The half NCCA crew of Shannon Seabrook and Rhiannon Philpot-Hale struck dramas with a power loss which stayed with them for the whole event. Stu and Daniel Stevenson were further back, but ready to pick up points if the others faltered. While all of that was happening, Tim Smith and Heath Lenne had more troubl, with broken gear linkages forcing their retirement, sadly ending their return to competing after a long break. Keep going boys, things can only improve! The NCCA bunch (Seabrook, Lawrance, Watson/Marson, van Winden/Stirland) stayed together after this, swapping places for the rest of the event, giving the club an amazing result. It was a terrific VCRS round for NCCA, and a credit to the reliable performance of these consistent club members. At the mid-way service the standings were: Mark Watson/John Marson – 4th Cary and Russell Seabrook – 5th David and Emma Lawrance – 6th Aaron van Winden/Jesse Stirland – 7th Steve Porter/Tony Ribinson – 10th (A massive fightback from SS1) Shannon Seabrook/Rhiannon Philpot-Hale – 12th Stu and Daniel Stevenson – 17th Our grouping was certainly forming a roadblock to the other clubs getting serious points in this event.

After service, Steve and Tony continued their climb up the rankings, with our other crews continuing to swap places between themselves – not letting others grab any space at the top. I don’t think that there has been such a fine performance from our club crews – ever. The way they kept their consistent pace throughout the event was staggering. At the end we had: Seabrooks – 3rd Porter/Robinson – 4th Watson/Marson – 6th Lawrances – 7th van Winden/Stirland – 8th Seabrook/Philpot-Hale – 12th Stevensons – 16th I hope that all of these crews can feel satisfied in the way they gave NCCA such a strong result and in their own individual performances. I can’t remember such a block of crews having such a close contest within the one club – great to see. Five crews in the top eight not only gains good club points, but also makes fewer available for any crew placing lower down.

Alan Friend/Michele Canning brought their revised Nissan Silvia out for a shakedown and to gain much needed seat time for later in the year. All in all it was a successful venture gaining 7th outright and 3rd 2WD even though slowed due to a broken alternator wire causing them to complete stages with no power steering. They would likely have finished higher placed without this problem.

This was a terrific performance given the 4WD favouring conditions combined with an annoying misfire that, unfortunately, lead to their retirement after service when a coil pack cracked open. Alan Friend/Michele Canning brought their revised Nissan Silvia out for a shakedown and to gain much needed seat time for later in the year. Ada proved to be a successful venture all in all, gaining 7th outright and 3rd 2WD despite a broken alternator wire causing them to complete stages with no power steering. They would likely have finished higher placed without this problem. Phil Thomas/Cody Rchards gave Phil’s great Escort a competitive outing, running strongly all day. They finished 8th outright and 4th 2WD, although not classified there due to the car being an invitational entry. They were only 1 second behind the Friend/Canning crew at the finish.
The upcoming events are: Marysville Stages – VRC and VCRS, 7 May Moonlight Meander – VCRS, 28 May Nightmoves – VCRS, 18 June All the VCRS components of these events will consist of at least some night time sections – back to the more traditional VCRS format.

Not much to report, everything covered in the mag, good reading. As far as my SSS is going, my instrument cluster has now been repaired and the Tacho configured for Hall Effect Ignition as in series 2 Bluebird dizzy, the fuel sender is in the process of restoration and my fuel tank is at Bundoora Radiators for its repair. Just a little hiccup, a much
needed one, so in a week or so, I can get on with the resto.- Gordon Ledwidge, Treasurer.

The year is now in full swing. We have had 2 events so far and no NCCA entrants. The next group 5 event is on May 8 at Parwan.
The bitumen (screech) events start after that on June 25. As per usual the Motorkhana championship for our club will be based on the Group 5 events. I look forward to seeing you at the presentation night or an event in the near future! - Lucas Thorpe, Motorkhana.

I ALL,
March has been one of the biggest months in membership land, we’ve been busy with new members and club permits. We currently have 352 members which is the highest number in the last 20 years.
With so many Club Permit cars in the Club, we thought it’s time to go for a drive. Starting at Wattle Glen, we plan to head out through Strathewen to Kinglake and then on to Yarra Glen.
Drive time would be around one and a half hours with a stopping point along the way. So, keep the morning of Sunday 24th of April free. I’d love to see some of the R32/33s out for the run and there are a heap of 120Ys, 1200 Coupes and 1600s that need a run! I’ll be bringing out one of my old cars for the run.
