Can you believe that spring and summer are on the horizon? I hope that you all stayed healthy and warm throughout the cold winter months. We had a busy winter here at the Senior Center.
In January we enjoyed a wonderful Chinese New Year celebration, and we are looking forward to a few more winter events including Cupid’s Arrow Bingo on February 28, the Mardi Gras Luncheon on March 7 and March Madness Bingo on March 28. See the January–March issue of Momentum or stop by to register today!
In this issue we are including Senior Center programming through July due to the exciting upcoming Leisure Center renovation. Find out more on page 8.
As we move into warmer weather, we encourage you to join the Wednesday Walking Club where we visit local forest preserves, parks, and even the Farmer’s Market. This year we would like to have lunch together afterward for those interested. During our walks last year, we engaged in many thoughtful discussions and learned about native plants from one of our walkers. New friendships have developed as well as a sense of belonging to an active group.
We are excited to share new programs and events with you this season. We hope you join us for new trips to Lake Geneva, Chicago River and Lake Urban Adventure Cruise, High Tea with Gerri or at our upcoming Barry Bradford, Bingo, and Luncheon events. Our popular Ice Cream Social with Maureen Christine is not to be missed! We have also added Rummikub and Cribbage to our Drop-in schedule. Check out page 3 to learn more. Both games are easy to learn and we are happy to teach you.
We here at the Senior Center would also like to thank all of you who stop by and chat to let us know how you are doing. If there is ever anything that needs attention, please let us know. We want your experience here to be nothing but exceptional.
We hope that you are as excited as we are for the season ahead.
Thank you and have wonderful spring and summer!

“It
Feels Like a Second Home.”
The women who run the Senior Center share what it means to them
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
If you ask the three women who run the Senior Center about their favorite part of the job, they all have the same answer: it’s a tie between how much they love working together and getting to know the members.
Northbrook Park District Recreation Manager
Nancy Eschker, Leisure Center Coordinator Sally Norlie and Customer Service Coordinator Christine “Chris” Ramos are familiar faces to anyone who frequents the Leisure Center.
Their easy smiles, quick laughs and cheerful and
efficient attitudes are the foundation of the Senior Center’s positive atmosphere. That’s because coming to work is never a burden, the three women said.
“It really doesn’t feel like work,” Sally said. “It feels like a second home,” Nancy added, as the other two nodded vigorously.
Running the Senior Center requires creativity and organizational skills, and of course, the ability to work as a team, the women said.
“We all know what needs to get done and we work together well,” Nancy said. “We’ve never had a situation where we didn’t get along.”
Nancy’s role ranges from ensuring rooms are set up for programs and checking in to see if seniors are comfortable and enjoying themselves, to planning Park District special events — her favorite is Party on the Green — and serving as liaison
Senior Center News, Cont.
for the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) to meet the needs of children and adults who require special assistance.
Sally supports building supervisors however needed, including by procuring supplies and helping with special events, such as by making gift baskets for the Senior Holiday Party and centerpieces for Breakfast with Santa. She also assists with camps and after-school bussing, and takes lots and lots of photos. “Wherever anybody needs support is where I help out,” she says.
Chris works customer service at both the Senior Center front desk and Leisure Center front desk, and assists supervisors with projects, room rentals, the Lending Closet and Senior Center memberships.
All three women said their roles give them great satisfaction.
“It’s so fun interacting with everyone, and getting to know the seniors and their variety of personalities,” Nancy said. “There are so many that bring a smile to my face when I see them.”
“It’s really neat to see how special events come together from start to finish, and how much the patrons are having fun during those events,” Sally said.
“I love working with everyone, both internally and externally,” Chris said. “I like seeing customers come back and seeing how much they look forward to activities, and seeing new members participate in new things.”
The job also has led to personal growth, the women said. For example, it has taught them patience in dealing with people’s individual quirks, because everyone’s circumstances are different, they said.
“You never know what seniors might have gone through in their life,” Nancy added. “It gives you understanding about the human condition, and how you have to be as kind and as patient as can be.”
Chris said she’s especially mindful of helping seniors who don’t have computers at home. “They have to come in person, and we want to make it as seamless as possible for them,” she said. “When a new Program Guide comes out, we have extra staff, and supervisors are available to make sure everything runs smoothly.”
Seeing how many seniors have a zest for life, and the desire to be social and involved, is especially inspiring, the women said.
“A lot of them still drive and are going strong in their 80s. We have a member who until 91 was still mowing the lawn!” Nancy said.
The Park District is truly a special place to work, because it feels like being part of a meaningful community, all three women said.
“I want all the seniors to know if they are having a rough day or they are feeling down about something, we are always a safe place to come and talk,” Nancy said. “We are not just here for recreation; we care about their mental health and wellbeing in general. If they ever feel they need help, we are here to help them in whatever way we can.”

Leisure Center Renovation Project Update
At the January Regular Board Meeting, the Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners gave staff direction to proceed with plans for a $12.1 million renovation of the Leisure Center. This project is partially funded by a $2.8 million state grant that was awarded to help improve the multigenerational recreation spaces inside the Leisure Center.
During focus groups, many of you provided feedback regarding the facility and at the Senior Showcase in November many of you saw initial concepts for the renovation including a new welcoming entrance, enhanced lobby, and expanded hallway spaces along with enhancements to the multipurpose, kitchen, early childhood and art rooms.
The renovation is scheduled to start in fall 2025. All senior programs, including drop-in programming, events and wellness, will be held at other Northbrook Park District facilities during the renovation. The next edition of Momentum will include more details about the project and temporary program locations.
We look forward to sharing additional information regarding the exciting plans for this facility in the coming months.
