PUBLISHER'SLETTER

I

f there’s one quality that stands out in my mind to describe someone who is highly successful in their business, career or life it would be consistency. In my study of wildly successful people, one of the characteristics that I found they all had in common was that they developed a solid plan for success, knew what they had to do and most importantly, did it on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. They practiced consistency to the extreme.

Take weight loss for example. We all know that losing weight takes time and it is the effect of a consistent effort to exercise, eat right and change your lifestyle on a daily basis. You may not see the results on a day to day basis, but one day you realize that your pants are a little looser and you start to like what you see in the mirror. How quickly this happens is determined by how consistent you are every day to eat healthy meals and exercise. The following are a few examples of how a consistent approach can maximize your performance and accelerate the rate with which you achieve any goal: • Consistently show up on time; • Consistently tell the truth and do the right thing; • Consistently honor your commitments; • Consistently go above and beyond your expectations; • Consistently take action and avoid excuses and procrastination; • Consistently set your goals for each week. Consistency is great because people like predictable things. Family, friends, co-workers and customers feel comfortable when they can rely on you to do exactly what they think you will do and have done in the past. But as we know, life often gets in the way and we realize that we have stopped being consistent and doing the things we need to do on a daily basis to reach our goals. April is a great time to re-evaluate our progress as we start the second quarter of the year. Take some time to think about what you were doing on a consistent basis in the past that helped you reach some of your goals. Then, implement some of those strategies now and see where it takes you! This month we’re all about being consistent with your diet to eliminate food and seasonal allergies. Did you know that you can have an allergic response to a plant/ tree, and to the foods produced by some of the trees in that same species? There can be cross reactivity that occurs and when this happens, avoidance of those foods is a wise choice and can lessen symptoms of seasonal allergies. For example, if the issue is an allergic reaction to ragweed, avoiding banana, cantaloupe, cucumber, and watermelon may be necessary. Food should be nourishing and supportive to your body and your wellness. If you feel you are having issues with certain foods, seek out a holistic practitioner to help you determine the causes and feel better! In Health and Happiness,

Nutmeg “Nuggets” The Difference Between Food Allergy and Sensitivity

Can I Prevent My Hair Loss?

E

veryone is familiar with the concern of allergic reaction to certain foods. Exposure to items like peanuts, shellfish or strawberries can lead to a sudden onset of itching and rash with progression to difficult breathing and, if severe enough, results in a full-on anaphylaxis that requires use of an Epipen and/or rush to the emergency room. This is known as an “immediate hypersensitivity reaction” and is mediated by a part of the immune system known as IgE antibodies. These are the same components of the immune system that are present in response to cat dander or seasonal air-borne pollens, and are what define an “allergic” reaction. They can be treated with a variety of pharmaceutical, over-the-counter and natural methods. However, there are other components of the immune system that also respond to certain food exposures, but these reactions are much less distinct. Known as IgG antibodies, these molecules create a different response, known as “delayed hypersensitivity reaction” or “food sensitivity.” This set of symptoms is much more generalized than an allergic IgE reaction, and can include: headaches, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, insomnia, irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue, joint or muscle pain, digestive upset, constipation, and acne, rashes or eczema. All of these symptoms occur hours to days after exposure to the offending food (hence the term “delayed”) and come from an increase in inflammation in the body which is mediated by the increased levels of IgG. Common causes of these IgG reactions include proteins found in dairy, eggs, soy, and wheat, including the famous gluten that is so frequently mentioned. Fortunately, a simple blood test can determine whether IgG reactions are occurring. Once the provoking foods are identified, they can be eliminated from the diet, often with dramatic improvement in symptoms. If you have any of the symptoms listed above that have been resistant to other methods of treatment, you may want to consider contacting a professional that works with IgG and food sensitivity issues. Kurt Beil, ND, LAc, MPH is a naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist specializing in addressing chronic disease. He takes a holistic approach toward wellness and disease, including examination of dietary and lifestyle factors. He practices in Danbury, CT and Mount Kisco, NY and can be reached at (914) 362-8315, info@hudsonvalleynaturalhealth.com or via his website hudsonvalleynaturalhealth.com.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

T

here is a huge difference between having hair today and losing it forever. Sense of urgency is the simple answer. Many hear the word “Alopecia” and immediately panic. Believe it or not, this instant panic can cause additional stress on the follicle. Alopecia is “simply” the medical term for “hair loss”. Knowing what type of alopecia or hair loss is key. If you have been diagnosed with alopecia, before going into a panic, asking what type of alopecia can be of great benefit. With reversible hair loss, the follicles are still alive. With irreversible hair loss, the follicles are no longer alive. With reversible alopecia, one can reverse and/or recover a significant amount of their lovely tresses once the underlying root cause(s) have been determined and addressed. Alopecia Areata (AA) or “Patchy hair loss” is one example of reversible hair loss. In this case, the patient’s follicle is being falsely attacked by its own immune system creating an inflammatory response in the bulb (lower region of the follicle). Once this attack and inflammation is reduced and/or removed, the patient’s hair can return. Cicatricial or Scarring alopecia is an example of irreversible hair loss. However, if you happen to receive this diagnosis early, you can minimize the progression of scarring and thinning. If you are in the latter stages and have a greater area of loss, you may be a great candidate for McBride Hair Restoration’s nonsurgical “Medical Grafting Technology.” Receive 6 free laser treatments with your 12-Week program when you mention this article. Call for your consultation today! Submitted by Donyelle V. McBride, Trichologist. For more information, visit www.mcbridehair.com. Email: info@mcbridehair.com Phone: 860-985-2081.

Love Blooms in April

By Ronnie Ann Ryan

F

or thousands of years, spring and love have been linked. They just go together like peanut butter and jelly. Spring is a time for rebirth when the earth awakens from winter dormancy. As the month of April arrives, the bees buzz, the birds sing and we fall in love.

Make a Plan Don’t leave love to chance or you could be waiting a long time. If you’ve left your 20’s behind, the opportunities to find the love of your life “organically” get much slimmer. You’ll need to set an intention to find love and go looking.

Turns out there is actually a biological reason behind this long-time phenomenon. According to Dr. Helen Fischer, a professor at Rutgers University and neuroscientist, it’s all about dopamine. What is dopamine? It’s a brain chemical that creates desire for something new and causes a sense of euphoria…like love.

Use the Tools Online dating, dating apps, Meetup. com, CTContacts.com, singles dances – these are the tools for modern love. First let’s talk about digital dating. I realize it might not be your favorite thing, but you can’t argue with the statistical success. Over 20% of relationships start on the web, and if you include social media, some say the results are as high as 35%.

Think about spring - the time of year when perennials push above ground, daffodils and tulips bloom and trees flower. The visual variety of shapes and colors excites the brain after the starkness of winter and pumps up the dopamine. And that my friends, is why love blooms every spring. Now, what are you going to do about this biological predisposition for love if you’re serious about finding it? Here’s how to make the most of the season and your elevated dopamine.

It’s become harder than it used to be to find singles on Meetup.com and most events are at least 70% women. But you can make new friends too. The good thing about Meetup events is that they’re a lowpressure way to meet new people. The more you get accustomed to interacting with others, the easier it will get and the better you’ll be at it!

CTContacts.com runs singles dances in central and southwestern Connecticut. Don’t attend with a group. Go with one friend and mingle. Ladies, dance with as many men as possible rather than saying no all night. Dancing is fun and you aren’t committed after one dance. It’s a great way to have other men notice you so boogie and enjoy. Get Fixed Up Nearly 30% of couples meet through other people. That means you should accept all invitations to parties, gatherings and barbecues. Set a “No Excuses” policy for yourself and just go. Ask your friends and family members (who you feel safe with) to set you up on blind dates. Some blind dates are magical like when I met my husband. Yes, he was a blind date so they work! Be Loving If you are serious about finding love, make an effort to acknowledge and enjoy the love you have right now. The more loving you are, the more love you attract. Think about your family and friends who care for you deeply. You might have neighbors or colleagues who appreciate you or pets you treasure. Share your love with others too. An attitude of gratitude is highly magnetic. Be Friendly Make it easier for people to meet you by being friendly. Look up, smile and have brief eye contact more often. The more you smile, the happier you are. Share a compliment with someone and make their day. You’ll feel good too. Make new friends – a bigger social circle increases your opportunities! Expand Your World Living a rich, fun, single life is another great way to meet your mate. Take a class, go to a lecture, try a new sport, join a gym, or listen to live music. Do more of whatever makes you happy. Get active in the world and meet new people. Take advantage of springtime and love being in the air. 5 Reasons Why You Need to Hire A Coach

By Lisa M Ciccomascolo, MS, ACC, CPC

T

here are many reasons to hire a coach. The International Coach Federation (ICF), the foremost authority on setting high coaching standards, has a precise definition of coaching. The ICF defines coaching as, "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential." Simply, your coach is your partner who helps you develop awareness of your natural strengths. Your coach is your advocate and the person that will hold you accountable to your commitment and your actions during the coaching process. Ask yourself these questions to determine if you need a coach: 1. Are you feeling stuck and walking (or running) around in endless circles? You view your life as a routine that never seems to move in a new or different direction. It is the same thing day after day. Its comfortable to be complacent, however, you know that there is more to life. This is the time when you know you should make changes in your life. A coach can help you get off your merry go round and begin to move toward change. 2. Do you need clarity and help deciding what you want to change? This is the time to determine what area (or areas) of your life that are not creating happiness or fulfillment. Take a personal inventory. What do you enjoy? Is it time for a career change or is it time to change companies? Is it time for a personal life change (style, eating, exercise)? Is it time for a relationship change or time to save a relationship? A coach will help you determine what it is that you really want. Together you can decide what will create happiness (or more happiness) in your life.

3. Do you need direction and help determining how to begin creating your long-awaited changes? You and your coach will design a workable plan to carefully build the action steps that you need to move toward your goals. You and your coach will progress through each effort in the coaching process, essentially bringing you closer and closer to your goals. 4. Are you feeling overwhelmed and need support? Overwhelm leads to a sense of loss of control. Change is scary. Stepping outside of your personal boundaries is not easy. Your coach is part of your support system. Your coach is your advocate. Your coach will assist you with navigating through the tough times, the overwhelm, and any self-doubt. 5. Are you lacking motivation and losing steam to continue? During the process of achieving your goals, we sometimes lose sight of the finish line. There are times when our expectations move faster than our progress. You may become discouraged if your goals are taking lon-

ger to achieve than you initially thought. Your coach will keep you focused and will use coaching techniques and methods to give you the renewed motivation you need to keep going. When you decide it is time to begin the coaching process, find a coach that you can easily connect with as a partner. Compatibility is the key to a successful coaching relationship. One of the best ways to find a compatible coach is to take advantage of a complimentary session. You will know within the first 20 minutes if the coach is someone that you believe is a great fit. You want a coach that not only listens but really hears you. You want a coach that will challenge you and really make you think. You should also find a coach that has experienced formal training. Ask the coach about their education and credentials. You have already decided to invest in yourself by beginning coaching; now, you need to make sure that your coach is worth your investment. A great coach will know the difference between coaching, therapy and consulting. Good coaches will never tell you what to do or infuse themselves into the coaching session. They will never bring their issues, opinions, values or beliefs into your coaching session. The coaching sessions are all about you. Your coach will help you bridge the gap between where you are to where you want to be. You will learn, grow and change. It may not be easy, but if you are committed to doing the "heavy lifting," you will be rewarded with clarity, direction, inspiration, and a much happier life. Lisa Ciccomascolo is a certified, professional behavioral coach & owner of Intuitive Coaching LLC. Lisa will help you bridge the gap between where you are now to where you want to be. Tired of Cellulite? Experience a Safe, Natural Way to Eliminate It!

Y

ou’re probably thinking…”this sounds way too good to be true.” And over the years, you’ve probably seen and tried many “miracle” cures for cellulite, but none of them worked. Liposuction or plastic surgery is an option, but both are very expensive, invasive and carry medical risks. Finally, an alternative is here and it’s called the Synergie® Aesthetic Massage System (AMS). Not only is it proven safe and effective by the FDA, but there is research behind the technology to boot. So, what exactly is cellulite and how does it form on the body? Cellulite is mostly made up of fat, but it isn’t an ordinary fatty tissue. This tissue has been damaged as a result of aging and malfunctions in the body’s systems. Cellulite is a combination of fat, water and

toxins trapped in a net of collagen and elastin fibers. When the body’s circulation and elimination processes become impaired, connective tissue loses its strength and unmetabolized fats and wastes become trapped just beneath the skin instead of being eliminated. Over a period of time, these wastes enlarge, harden and push through spaces in the connective fiber bands that anchor the skin and keep it looking smooth. These wastes cause bulges which appear as dimples and form the puckering, distorted skin effect we know as cellulite. Cellulite is most commonly found in areas of fat deposits such as on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen of most women and some men, too. Factors that may increase your chances of having cellulite include: stress, an inactive lifestyle, and

using hormonal contraceptives. In addition, heredity, skin thickness, gender, the amount and distribution of body fat, and age can all influence the extent to which cellulite is present or visible. Treatments for cellulite Many treatments have been promoted, ranging from dietary changes to cellulite creams. Methylxanthines are a group of chemicals that include aminophylline, caffeine, and theophyilline. These chemicals are present in many cellulite creams and are promoted as treatments for cellulite because of their known ability to break down fat stores. However, skin creams cannot deliver the required concentration of these chemicals for the length of time required for significant fat breakdown. While studies have shown a small reduction in thigh measurements with some of these preparations, they do not promote significant loss of cellulite. Even dietary supplements such as ginkgo biloba, sweet clover, grape-seed bioflavonoids, bladder wrack extract, oil of evening primrose, fish oil, and soy lecithin have been marketed as anti-cellulite treatments. These claim to have positive effects on the body such as boosting metabolism, improving circulation, protecting against cell damage, and breaking down fats. Melissa Martin Wallace, esthetician and owner of Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center in Avon, has been using the Synergie® AMS for years and witnesses amazing results in her clients. “I was always a skeptic when it came to cellulite treatments, but having personally experienced and seen the changes in my own and client’s bodies, I know this treatment works.

Not only with the reduction in cellulite and tightening of the skin, but also in circumferential body measurements. The results are amazing!” says Melissa. How does the Synergie® AMS work? The Synergie® AMS uses revolutionary vacuum massage technology to improve the appearance of skin while improving circulation. It is an easy and effective non-surgical alternative for body sculpting, resulting in lost inches. The treatment provides optimal stimulation, stretching and pressure to subcutaneous tissues offering a type of subdermal tissue massage not possible through traditional massage techniques. A typical treatment program consists of twice-weekly sessions, followed by maintenance visits. Treatments last about 30 minutes and the number of treatments given is typically between 8 and 16, however, it is customized for each person. So, what’s a treatment feel like? Imagine a deep, invigorating massage. The entire body is treated, paying extra attention to each client’s areas of concern. It uses positive and negative pressure and suction to manipulate the tissue below the skin and expel toxins into the lymphatic system, which is then eliminated by the body. Melissa explained that noticeable changes can often be seen within 4-6 treatments, although most people can either see or feel a difference in the skin’s appearance after the first treatment. In Melissa’s experience, clients who have done 16 treatments have lost a full pant size. She referenced a few studies, one of which reported that 36 women treated twice a week over an eight-week period showed a loss of inches in 100% of the participants and visible reduction in the appearance of cellulite in 91% of the participants. In some individuals, almost three inches were lost after treatment. For me, I noticed a smoothing out of my skin around the hip and thigh area after about four treatments.

DONʼT LET FEAR KEEP YOU FROM BETTER HEALTH...

Experience Anxiety-free Sedation Dentistry.

Melissa explained that other benefits of the Synergie® AMS treatments include: detoxification, relief from edema, reduction in muscle pain, stress relief, increased circulation, skin tightening, and body reshaping. And even though this sounds like a miracle cure, don’t make the mistake of thinking this can replace diet and exercise. Just like any other weight loss strategy, if you’re not eating right and staying active, the results will not be as quick or effective. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. A Sacred Reunion: Shamanism and Allergy Release

By Joyce St. Germaine, M. Ed., CHt., RYT-200

A

llergies…have you been affected by them at some point in your life? Have you had to curtail outdoor activities during certain seasons lest you suffer with watery eyes, runny nose, coughing, sneezing or other discomfort? Does contact with animals transform you into a sniffling, itchy blob? Are your friends and family members impacted by your allergies? Your symptoms might be as mild as sniffles or as serious as anaphylaxis and they have prevented you from enjoying life completely and fully. You’ve likely explored different treatment options, traditional and non-traditional, without relief. It is possible that shamanism might be perfect for you either under these circumstances or as a lifelong practice. Shamanism may offer what other modalities could not….a release of your allergies! This ancient practice spans across all cultures and is based on the knowledge that all things are connected by threads of energy, creating the “All That Is”. When these threads are weakened or broken, they can be restored by shamanic practices which honor the partnership existing between all

things on the physical and the energetic spiritual planes. An energetic weakening or tear might manifest in many ways, including as an allergic response. I first try to determine why my client has energetically disconnected from those plants, animals or substances causing distress. The reasons this disconnect occurs are as varied as the lives of the people who are affected. Thus, my exact approach will vary from person to person. I might guide a client on a shamanic journey into non-ordinary reality, an energetic realm comprised of three levels: the lower world, the middle world and the upper world. Achieving theta brain wave states is desired, a level of consciousness associated with dreaming and creativity, and is usually done through the beat of a drum or rattle. There I would assist the journeyer in reconnecting energetically to those things from which he/she had become separated. It is a simple and enjoyable process, even for first time journeyers. In some situations, I could journey on someone’s behalf and ask that plant or

animal why the separation occurred and if it is willing to once again work in partnership with that person. That energy would be retrieved, and I would blow or “camay” it back into the client’s energy field. Circling around them in traditional fashion, I would seal in this essence by using the vibration of a rattle or drum to complete the reunion. Sometimes a fear or phobia will accompany an allergy, especially if the trigger is an animal. An extreme or irrational phobia of an animal may be caused by a past-life memory stored in the subconscious mind. Although the physical body is a different body, the subconscious mind carries all the experiences from all time. The subconscious can recreate a familiar experience, including the physical or emotional trauma associated with that experience. So, if one’s final experience in a past lifetime was of being killed by a tiger or other wild animal, that fear might create an energetic imprint. This imprint might present in the form of a fear, phobia or an allergic response to a similar type of animal such as a domestic house cat. If the allergy is to a food, it’s possible that exposure to or ingestion of a substance in a previous lifetime led to death. For some, exposure to an allergen can result in a present life-threatening situation, such as anaphylaxis. It is imperative that an appropriate and effective plan be implemented. Physical and emotional emergencies should be treated as such and appropriate medical care should be sought. If exploration of past lives is the method chosen to release the allergic response, the shamanic approach would differ from hypnotic regression therapy. Hypnotic regression requires that the client be guided via hypnosis back through time to the origin of the problem. Although I have found

remarkable success using this hypnotherapy technique, it is not always appropriate. If a shamanic approach is better suited to that individual, a shamanic ceremony could be performed, inviting the spirit of the plant or animal to join and celebrate the reunion. Often a soul retrieval could be the chosen process to retrieve lost soul essence caused by past trauma. Tremendous healing has been documented by shamanism alone or when partnered with other modalities. When addressing allergies, as with all other imbalances, the shamanic intention is to strengthen and restore the powerful energy threads of the “All That is”. What varies is simply the approach used to restore a sacred union.

Reduce Your Risk of Autoimmune Disease

By Nick Edgerton, ND utoimmune (AI) diseases are becoming more common in developed countries. Physicians agree this problem is currently intensifying, some using the language of epidemic proportions. There is not a well-defined mechanism of action behind these diseases. AI disease is an umbrella term for a disease in which human pathophysiology turns on oneself and begins to attack itself. The immune system is described as hyper-active. This can happen anywhere in the body. In fact, there are 100+ autoimmune diseases, from rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, to more rare diagnosis’ such as antiphospholipid syndrome.

A

Hygiene Hypothesis The ‘hygiene hypothesis’ questions if too clean of an environment is associated with an increased risk of AI disease. Evidence seems to support the theory that germs help educate and regulate your immune system. For example, there is correlation between the rise in cesarean sections and the rise in AI disease. The mechanism is the absence of interaction with the vaginal flora. The hygiene hypothesis is extrapolated to other aspects of infancy and childhood. Breastfeeding offers the transmission of antibodies as well as beneficial bacteria from

the mother's milk to the infant. Being breastfed was associated with a lower incidence of diabetes, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis and asthma, explained by the protection against early infections, anti-inflammatory properties, and regulation of infant's microbiome. It has been speculated that having siblings can reduce the likelihood of developing AI diseases. A questionnaire-based study found children whose families washed dishes by hand versus using a ‘sterilizing’ dishwasher had significantly less eczema, hay fever, and asthma. Other sources of ‘good germs’ for kids can come from playing outside. This is supported by a study that showed chronic subjection to farm dust helped lower the allergic tendency towards house dust mites. The microbiome is an ecosystem of microbes living in a human, mostly concentrated in the intestinal tract. It can be negatively affected by the aforementioned lifestyle factors as well as stress and lack of exercise. The microbiome is often measured by its diversity and abundance of microbes. A recent study pointed out that decreased diversity and a shift towards inflammatory microbes usually precedes the onset of Type 1 Diabetes in children with genetic risk factors.

Botanical Therapy + Naturopathic Wellness Center

Speaking of genetics, certain genes with various single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs = genetic variations) have been linked as risk factors for AI disease. However, this is never perfect because there are many genes at play, and the environment that governs the genes is always changing. Leaky Gut We are supposed to digest food in the intestinal tract and absorb the micronutrients into the blood. However, if there is inflammation present from excess stress or an inflammatory diet, then the intestinal walls become more permeable. This leads to extravasation of food proteins from the intestinal tract into the lymphatic tract, a major part of your immune system. Here you may make antibodies against foreign invaders, or in this case, food proteins like gluten. These antibodies will look for certain protein patterns to attack and destroy. The theory is that these antibodies not only attack food proteins but turn and attack certain tissues in your body with similar protein patterns. Stress Based on correlation studies, AI diseases seem to begin after significant stressors. Perhaps this goes along with the leaky gut theory above. Infection is considered a stressor, and we see AI diseases stem from certain infections known as enteroviruses, specifically coxsackie virus. It is thought that the coxsackie virus may have a similar protein pattern as pancreatic beta cells. So, when the immune system attacks the virus, the pancreas ends up being attacked and losing the cells responsible for making insulin, rendering Type 1 Diabetes. Also, postpartum, whether blissful or challenging, seems to be a common time where AI disease processes begin. Physical-mentalemotional trauma has also been a commonality in the predisposition of AI disease. Lifestyle Modifications Reduction in inflammatory burden is most important. Nutrition is the best place

18

to start, since we make this decision 2-5 times a day. Figuring out one’s food sensitivities is important so these foods can be avoided. Working with a qualified practitioner, a patient may do a food elimination protocol with re-introduction or get objective information from a blood test. Elimination is more important than supplementation, but a nutraceutical protocol aimed at anti-inflammatory support and rebuilding the intestinal wall is indicated. The Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP) is gaining traction for management of AI diseases, which restricts several major food groups: grains, dairy, eggs, nightshade vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and more. Promoting a healthy microbiome is necessary. An anti-inflammatory diet will promote this by eliminating processed foods. Physical activity is one of the best things you can do to make positive shifts in your microbiome. Probiotic supplementation supports a healthy microbiome as well. There are immune modulating nutraceuticals with a growing body of research to support them. For example, Echinacea spp. is an ancient plant medicine that recently was considered as an immune-stimulant. The mechanism of immune stimulation would not be good for AI disease, and some warn against using Echinacea for AI disease. However, there is no evidence that echinacea worsens AI disease, in fact physicians a few generations back were using Echinacea to manage Rheumatism. If you have an AI disease, then you may be managed on a steroid medication or a biologic immunotherapy. Naturopathic medicine can complement these medications and serve as a palliative treatment to the potential side effects. For example, steroid medications deplete magnesium, thus it is wise to monitor serum magnesium levels and be keen to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Another wise choice, for everyone, is to avoid getting vaccinations around a time of a cold or infection as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There is no cure for AI diseases, however Naturopathic medicine does a promising job to reduce the burden of the diagnosis. I suggest finding the right care team and welcome lifestyle changes for the best. Spring Forward Your Savings and Spending Strategies

By Caroline Wetzel

S

pring is in the air! Temperatures are rising and forecasts for rain are replacing predictions for snow. When you think about your spending and saving behaviors, are you confidently springing forward with strategies for growth, or are you soaking in April showers?

Following are steps you can take to deepen your understanding of your spending and savings so that you are nourished in this moment and positioned to enjoy a bountiful financial harvest in the future.

Sowing Seeds that Grow The Wall Street Journal article, “Americans Are Spending More, Saving Less” claims more Americans are not saving as much as they have in the past. What’s the “right” amount to spend and save? The most accurate answer is, “it depends on your specific situation” because different factors like your financial goals, your income, and your existing debt and savings all impact your numbers.

Step 1: Confirm Regardless of your income, spending less than you earn is easier to do when you understand how much money flows into your control and how you spend it. When you have this visibility around your cash inflows and outflows, you can prioritize your expenses according to those essential for survival and those that you enjoy when you have enough income to afford them.

While each of us have different specific spending and savings numbers, two key principles set up all of us for financial success: spend less than you earn and save for the future. While these are not hard concepts to understand, they are habits that require attention, focus, and ongoing care until they are firmly rooted in our attitudes and behaviors, just like a spring seedling.

Take a couple of hours one day this spring to review your spending and saving. Collect all documents related to your income and expenses for one to two months. Your income documents might reflect wages, average tips or bonuses, alimony payments, and investment income. Your expense documents might include bank statements, loan payment statements, and credit card statements.

Steps for Cultivating Green Sustainably Use the new season to reflect on your own metaphorical spending and savings garden. Are the choices that you are making today feeding only your immediate needs, or are they helping your money grow sustainably?

Step 2: Analyze Review the information that you’ve gathered. See how much money you earned and how you spent it. Consider the following questions:

STAMFORD OFFICE: Marina Klimova, MA, LMFT Mildred Hungria, LCSW, Dr. Marianela Medrano Mark Wildermann, Med, CH, Kathlyn Griffin, LPC, LMHC

• How much did I spend on fixed expenses? These include: • Housing debt (homeowners: principal, interest, tax, and insurance; renters: rent and insurance) • Consumer debt (credit card) • All other debt (personal loans, student loans, auto loans) • Groceries • How much did I save to my: • Personal savings account? • Emergency reserves? • Retirement? • College funding? • How much did I spend on everything else? • What was the “everything else” that I spent money on, for example: • Entertainment • Dining out • Coffee, drinks, soda, snacks Step 3: Reflect Now that you have analyzed your spending and savings details, how do you feel? Are your spending and saving behaviors as you expected? Are there any surprises? Step 4: Obtain perspective As mentioned before, the “right” amount for you to save and spend depends on a variety of factors unique to your specific financial situation. A Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) can work with you to determine your unique numbers and develop strategies with you for reaching those numbers. CFP® professionals often consider the following when guiding clients on their spending and savings: • Consumer debt ratio: all monthly debt payments except housing and student loans are less than 20% of net (take home) income • Emergency reserves: cash equivalent to 3 – 6 months of expenses is set aside and used for only unanticipated, unforeseen circumstances (e.g. accident, change in income, injury, job loss, etc.) • Housing debt ratio: all housing debt (homeowners: principal, interest, tax and insurance; renters: rent and insurance) is less than 28% of gross (before tax) income • Monthly debt ratio: all monthly debt payments, inclusive of consumer, housing, personal loan, student loan, etc., are less than 36% of gross (before tax) income

Step 5: Develop and act on your plan Congratulations! You now have more information about both your spending and savings as well as financial services professionals’ perspectives. Are you satisfied with your approach? Are there changes that you’d like to make? Even if you’re drenched from past spending storms, you can make new decisions today to help your finances blossom radiantly in the future. You can prioritize your spending and adjust how much you pay on your fixed and “everything else” expenses. And you can increase your savings as a result of decreasing your “everything else” expenses. Finally, you can change your income sources and amount. Your ongoing, diligent care for your spending and savings garden will help your money grow over time. Caroline Wetzel is a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) and Accredited Wealth Management Advisor (AWMA®) who has worked in financial services since 2001. Do It Yourself Companion Planting

By Meredith Sorensen

O

ur bodies respond to what we put in them. Drink a frozen beverage too quickly? Brain freeze! Consume lactose or sugar? Get ready for potentially gassy conditions and energy spikes. The same holds true in the garden: plants respond to inputs including temperatures, sunlight, soil composition, and adjacent plants. Entire books are written on each of these topics. This article strives to provide some general context and simple advice to help beginning do-it-yourself gardeners make good choices for their landscape. Temperature When growing vegetables, take note of the temperature of the soil. I personally do not bother with a thermometer. Instead, the poking up of the earliest perennials of my landscape – asparagus, rhubarb, plus the cheerful springtime greeting by crocuses, hyacinth and daffodils – signal that the soil has started warming up. I know it’s time to get going with my cool season crops that thrive in cooler soil temperatures, such as beets, Brussels sprouts, kale, onions, and peas. Then it will be time to grow warmer season crops that thrive with higher daytime temperatures such as snap beans, corn, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and squash. If it’s an extra hot

summer, the eggplant, melons, sweet potatoes and tomatoes will do especially well. TIP: When planting tomatoes starts, WAIT for the soil to warm up before you transplant them in the ground. Just be patient. They really don’t like “cold toes” and will significantly slow down if you hurry to get them in the ground. In addition, if you can place your tomatoes near a heat sink – think of a big boulder, or southernfacing wall – do so. They’ll love the heat source throughout the season. Sunlight Related to soil temperature but worth calling out on its own, the amount of sunlight a space gets clearly impacts growth cycles. Spots in your yard that get partial sun or partial shade (defined as 3 to 6 hours of direct sunlight) will be a better fit for certain plants such as arugula, beets, and spinach. The areas of your landscape that get full sun (defined as at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun each day) will benefit tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash, and beans. Thankfully, nature is forgiving and usually finds a way to grow regardless of the light conditions. TIP: For raised beds, if you have to choose an eastern versus western exposure go with the spot with eastern exposure. The morning sun will dry off the evening dew, which reduces leaf rot, and your raised bed won’t get zapped in the glare of the afternoon sun. Soil Composition If you support your soil, it will support you and help your plants overcome any sensitivities or weaknesses they may have. In general, you want dark, rich, fluffy soil with good tilth and some organic content. Nearly all soils benefit from regular topdressings of compost, a layer of mulch, cover crops, and pathways. TIP: Give your garden the gift of a 1-2” layer of mulch. It will have the immediate benefit of making the space look great. It will have the ongoing benefit of reducing weeds, slowly adding nutrients to the soil, and helping maintain steady temperatures. Companion Planting This is where we get to the elaborate dance of the veggie garden. I liken companion planting to figuring out a seating chart

with in-laws that do and don’t get along with each other. For example, tomatoes and basil do well together. Bibb lettuce and spinach are friends. So are lettuce, carrots, and radishes. And, to continue the dining metaphor, that’s just the first seating; subsequent seatings, (typically referred to as crop rotations or successive plantings) take into account “heavy feeders,” “heavy givers,” and “light feeders.” For example, veggies such as tomatoes, squash and lettuce are considered heavy feeders and take lots of nutrients, especially nitrogen, from the soil. So to return nitrogen to the soil, one ideally subsequently grows heavy givers such as peas, beans, alfalfa, and fava beans. Then, one ideally plants a light feeder such as root crops. And then back to heavy feeders. For the first few years of having my own garden, I set out with the best intentions and carefully mapped out where everything would go in the garden. I had diagrams and spreadsheets cross-referenced with my biodynamic calendar. Then the season would hit and I would get the big items in (peas, squash, tomatoes, and a few sections of beets, greens and carrots), and then squeeze everything else in the ground wherever it could fit and roughly made sense. I now accept that as my gardening style. The garden always meets me wherever I’m at and whatever I do. I learn something new each year – both what works for the garden and works for me. I’m not condoning this method; rather I share this as a license to not get too paralyzed about which plants can go next to each other in space and time, and just do what works for you, your taste buds, your time and your space. TIP: With that context, here’s a list of common garden vegetables and their companions and antagonists (Organic Gardening and Farming, February 1972, p. 54). Now get out there and have yourself a garden party with the right temperature, lighting, soil composition, and attendees.

The Importance of Health Advocacy

By Lynda Adams

I

haven’t been feeling well since last Fall. I was under a lot of stress in September so I thought it was just remnants of that, but as time went on and I continued to develop more and more symptoms, I knew it was time to visit my doctor. Now you would think that my being involved with ELMTM Maine for the past couple of years would mean that I would go to a Naturopath or at least an Integrative Doctor, but to be quite honest, I just hadn’t made finding another practitioner a priority. So, in November I went to my traditional medical doctor for a physical since it had been years since I had any bloodwork done. They listened to my complaints of having chills, body aches, periods of extreme fatigue, neck pain, dizziness and a persistent sore throat. They tested me for everything under the sun. Mono, Lyme, Strep, Thyroid and all the usual bloodwork. All the tests were negative and all my levels were in normal ranges so they sent me on my way and told me to come back if I didn’t feel better. Fast forward two months and many more symptoms later and I decided to return to my traditional doctor again. This time, the doctor wasn’t available so I saw a Nurse Practitioner who was assisted by a Nurse Practitioner who was in training. I explained again all the symptoms I continued to have from the last visit and the new symptoms I had developed including joint pain, especially in my fingers; numbness in my hands and fingertips; headaches; depression; memory fog; involuntary muscle twitches in my eye and legs;

and flashes of lights in my right eye. The Nurse Practitioner took note of my symptoms and then left me alone to be examined by the trainee. She started running me through a series of neurological tests and I immediately had flashbacks of going to that same office with my now deceased father a few years back and seeing those exact same tests performed on him. I stared to get emotional and when the trainee asked me a question my voice cracked. She immediately asked if I had been suffering from depression. Didn’t I include that in my list of symptoms? Seeing as she had forgotten, I said, “Yes, quite a bit.” I didn’t even finish my sentence and she said, “Would you consider taking something for that?” My response, “Absolutely NOT!” After my examination, the Nurse Practitioner returned and consulted with her trainee. She then asked me which symptom was bothering me most and I answered, “Joint pain.” She said, “Well, then I would like to send you in for some inflammatory tests to see if you might be suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.” I said, “But how would that explain all the other symptoms I have? From my research, I believe I may be suffering from Lyme Disease. Isn’t there another test you can do that would check further for that?” And her response was….wait for it…..”We understand that some people believe in Lyme Disease, but we don’t recognize that here because it’s not in our books and we aren’t trained on it.”

This is where my inner advocate and fierce protector came out and said, “Well, I guess I need to go someplace else then.” Now I will say, that she was extremely polite and friendly throughout this conversation and she did offer to give me a referral to a Naturopath, but I politely declined and said I was all set. Fortunately, I had a couple people refer me to a doctor at an Integrative practice who specializes in Lyme and was able to visit them within the next week.

Diagnosis: Lyme Disease and possibly a couple other tick co-infections. As of this writing, I am still waiting for lab work to come back with a definitive diagnosis, but from what I understand those aren’t fail proof so I was started on treatment since I have all the tell-tale signs. A week later and I am already seeing improvement.

to recommend a patient advocate. In fact, some hospitals and nursing homes employ advocates who work on patients’ behalf at no charge. Another option is to hire someone from a home health aide company or organization. These advocates work by the hour and can be an affordable option.

This scenario was not new to me. I had been there before when my husband, mother or father was sick. I would accompany them to the doctor or visit them in the hospital after an illness or surgery and time and time again they were dismissed about their complaints. I was always astounded when they wouldn’t ask questions about what was being told to them. They had the mindset of, “Well they’re the doctor, so I should believe what they’re telling me.”

A health advocate can: • Ask questions or voice concerns to your doctor for you.

I remember when my father was first diagnosed with Colon Cancer and was started on medication. I wanted to help him fill his pill box so I took all the new and old bottles of medication for his many illnesses and lined them up on the table. It looked like he could have started his own pharmacy and the worst part was that he didn’t know what pills he was taking for which disease! His response when I asked what he was taking it for was, “Because the doctor told me to.” After doing my own research and asking questions, we were able to remove him from a few of the pills he was taking because, after consulting with the doctor, he said they weren’t necessary anymore and he should have stopped them a long time ago. Ugh. I am a firm believer in being your own advocate, especially when it comes to your health and I highly encourage people to go to the doctors with their loved ones to be an advocate for them. It’s always nice to have another set of ears when you have a lot of medical information coming at you at one time. If you don’t have someone to go to the doctor with you, then I would suggest hiring a health advocate. Some professional advocates specialize in researching the best available treatments and can assist you at home or in the hospital. You can also ask your local hospital staff

• Compile or update your medication list. • Remember your medication regimen and help you follow treatment and instructions, including asking questions about your follow-up care. • Help arrange transportation. • Research treatment options, procedures, doctors, and hospitals. • File paperwork or assist with insurance matters. • Ask the "what’s next" questions, such as, "If this test is negative what does it mean? If it’s positive, will more tests be needed?" I know my story isn’t unique and many people who read this will probably relate it to something that happened to them or someone else. My hope in sharing my story is to let you know you are not alone and that it is ok to ask questions of your healthcare professional and seek advice and treatment elsewhere if you feel you are not being heard. Yes, your provider may have a degree that you don’t, but that doesn’t mean they know everything and ultimately you are the expert when it comes to your own body and how you feel. Mindful Eating: A Way to a Consciously Lived Life By Marianela Medrano, PhD, LPC

D

o you have an adversarial relationship with food and eating? Has weight become an insurmountable preoccupation for you? You are not alone. Our frenetic lives have made us wage a war on ourselves and many of us live without joy and self-awareness. We suffer constant anxiety. More often than not, to deal with our stress, we use food as a palliative, a way to soothe ourselves.

Emotions can be healthy guides The human body has a wisdom that is different but not separate from that of the mind. Our emotions, which manifest as physical sensations in the body, can help us make wiser choices if we are aware of them. ME helps individuals cultivate nonjudgmental attention to emotions and to the physical needs of the body so they can make informed decisions about self-care.

Mindful Eating (ME) helps people re-establish a healthy and joyful relationship with food and eating. The approach does not advocate diets or focus on weight but guides individuals in the practice of self-awareness, gentle movement, meditation and other exercises which when implemented daily have the potential to bring their lives into balance.

ME also focuses on recognizing the triggers that are not connected to physical hunger. People who eat mindfully find new ways to meet needs that are not related to physical hunger, more effective ways than food consumption.

Eating is a natural, healthy, and joyful activity that has been turned into a weapon of control in today’s food-focused, diet-obsessed culture. To eat mindfully is to eat with intention, awareness, and without judgment. The practice of ME is an ancient one that has become relevant in the present time of fast-paced living. In ME we eat to nurture the self, not merely to satisfy our hunger. When people slow down they become aware of their eating patterns and have the opportunity to change them.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

Can ME solve disordered eating problems? Identifying the kinds of hunger is the first step in developing a healthier and more joyful relationship with food. ME is an effective way to end the tyranny of disordered eating, which is most often an aggressive form of self-aversion. Most people struggling with eating patterns eat on automatic pilot in order to satisfy physical hunger. Eating, under those circumstances, is done as a response to unexamined triggers. The practice of mindfulness brings nonjudgmental awareness to patterns of behavior. For instance, a person practicing mindful eating will pause and ask who is hungry in there? What am I noticing? What part of me needs to be fed? Then she will determine what actions to take in order to exercise self-care and self-compassion or kindness. Jan Chozen Bays, MD author of Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food, has identified nine kinds of hunger, including eye hunger, stomach hunger, and heart hunger. According to the author, in order to assess the nine hungers it is imperative to get in touch with the senses, as well as with the emotional experiences in the present moment. Developing awareness of the nature of our needs enables us to make wise choices. Each one of the nine hungers has a voice. The practice of intentional listening to what the voices say is the beginning of exercising discernment when choosing how to live our day-to-day life. Once individuals identify the nine hungers, they are able to hear the different voices, weigh what each voice says, then make an informed, wise and compassionate decision about what to do next. This way, the individual gets to decide, for instance, if the kind of hunger would be satisfied by food or something else. The problem with our fast pace Often we eat quickly to get on to the next thing. Fast-paced eating impacts the satiety hormones that kick in after 20 minutes of eating and signal to the brain that you have had enough to eat. Rapid eating can impair our judgment on how much to eat, thus

causing us to over-eat. By simply slowing down the pace of eating we can begin to enjoy our food and be better able to judge how much is enough. A little slower pace can help us recognize the sensations of physical hunger and to differentiate between it and other kinds of hunger. ME invites people to become scientists interested in learning about their own functioning and adaptability. In her book, Dr. Bays talks about how to differentiate between the symptoms of hunger and anxiety, which are very similar. Eating inappropriate foods and at inappropriate speed can increase anxiety and thus lead to a vicious cycle. ME is about checking in with the body and recognizing physical sensations, which help people to discern feelings of fullness and satisfaction. Craving is an opportunity A craving for something feels like there is nothing we can do about it. In mindful eating a craving is nothing but an opportunity to explore an experience we are living. Craving is an opportunity to look closely at what is happening in thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in the body, remaining curious about the experience and exercising kindness toward the self. One example of working with craving would be journaling. Journaling can help people sort through their thoughts, emotions and physical sensations and more objectively weigh their choices and behaviors. A person may journal her thoughts about a craving by writing down simple things like: “I must have that!” “I am losing my mind.” I have no choice.” Then the person might be invited to identify the emotions that go with those thoughts such as anger, sadness, shame and anxiety. After the emotions are explored, the person may then bring awareness to physical sensations in the body, such as

tightness in the neck and chest or a clawing feeling in the abdomen. Lastly, the person could be invited to explore the behaviors that are most likely to follow: eating too much and too fast; making excuses to go the store; sneaking food.

Eclectic Naturopathic Medical Center, LLC

Finding other healthy ways to work with those thoughts, emotions and physical sensations can help to sidestep a craving. Here are three examples: 1. Don’t ignore the craving. Stay with the physical sensations in the body. Surf the craving. 2. Instead of giving into the craving, do mindful movements such as a few gentle yoga stretches. 3. Instead of giving into the craving, take three minutes to breathe purposely and gently. ME is about cultivating self-awareness and paying attention to our interactions with our inner and outer worlds. This practice is all about non-judgment and the practice of unwavering kindness toward the self and others. As Jon Kabat-Zinn indicates: “…cultivating mindfulness is not unlike the process of eating. It would be absurd to propose that someone else eat for you.” Let’s live life and eat our food using mindfulness as the foundation so we can free ourselves from ineffective patterns of behaviors. Breathe Easier During Allergy Season

By Stacey Munro, ND

T

is the season for sneezing, congestion, headaches, and itchy eyes. As the beautiful trees begin to bud and flowers push up through the ground, people return to the drugstore for over-thecounter and prescription remedies. As one dutifully takes medication to control annoying allergy symptoms, they may wonder if there are any alternatives to this expensive solution with varying effectiveness. It is not just outdoor allergens like pollen and grasses that cause allergy symptoms. Inside the house there are a variety of allergenic particles such as dust, dust mites, pet dander, and mold. The symptoms are the same except that they may occur yearround instead of seasonally. Allergy testing can help to identify allergy triggers whether they are indoor or outdoor. Choosing the best method to naturally treat allergies starts with understanding what happens in the body when it is exposed to an allergen such as pollen, dust, grass, or mold. The skin forms a protec-

tive barrier on the outside of our body, but inside the nasal and sinus cavities, eyelids, throat, and lungs there is a semi-permeable layer of tissue called a mucous membrane. Mucous membranes secrete mucous which is a protective substance. Also present in the mucous membranes are mast cells. Mast cells are part of the immune system. When triggered by small airborne particles they produce a cascade of inflammatory chemicals. This causes symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and post-nasal drip. Particles of environmental allergens such as pollen are harmless. They do not cause infection or disease. People who develop allergies, however, become hypersensitive to these triggers through repeated exposure. A family history of allergies is the most important factor that puts someone at risk for allergic disease. There are several helpful things to try this season which may give relief without the use of medication.

Neti Pot A Neti Pot looks a little like a teapot. It is used to wash the sinuses and nasal passages, also known as nasal irrigation or nasal lavage. Allergens may be inhaled or ingested. mend doing it at least once a day before bed to help clear allergens that accumulated during the day. Air Purifier Keeping allergens out of the bedroom is the number one priority. People typically spend more time in the bedroom than any other room of the house. In addition, allergy symptoms can disrupt sleep, which has other health consequences. Most allergens can be minimized in the bedroom with an air purifier, keeping pets out, removing rugs, and shutting windows during allergy season. Covers for mattresses and pillows may be helpful for dust mite allergies. Supplements There are many effective alternatives to over-the-counter or prescription medication for allergies. The typical ingredients in an herbal allergy supplement may include bromelain, quercetin, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, N-acetyl cysteine, and stinging nettles. Most of these work by inhibiting mast cells, thinning mucous, and reducing inflammation. The different properties of these supplements are synergistic with each other. Food Sensitivities Another factor to consider when allergy symptoms are present year-round is food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are delayed food reactions that manifest in a variety of ways. Most people would not think that congestion, sneezing, and post-nasal drip could be caused by reactions to food. Food sensitivities not only trigger allergy symptoms, but also headaches, joint pain, fatigue, and digestive problems. My rule of thumb is that year-round allergy symptoms may be caused by indoor allergies, food sensitivities, or both. Food sensitivity testing helps to identify specific foods which the body is reactive to. It is amazing how often allergies, even seasonal allergies, improve dramatically by removing or limiting food sensitivities. Allergies! Your Food IS Your Medicine By Pauline Weissman, MS, CNS, LDN

t’s spring...the trees are green, the grass is lush after a wet winter, and the flowers are blooming beautiful colors. With this being so, your allergies may be blooming too! If this is you, you know the drill: red, itchy, watery eyes; sinus congestion; trouble sleeping; loving the looks of the outdoors, but having to keep your windows closed to keep that pollen out; and...having to minimize your time spent outdoors to keep your symptoms at bay. What a hassle!

include coughing and wheezing, vomiting, swelling of lips and tongue, and in severe cases weak pulse or loss of consciousness. IgA reactions are generally a delayed response in the system and can take up to 48 hours to present themselves. These immunoglobulins are present in our mucus membranes and help the body fight against viruses and bacteria. If the foods we consume cause inflammation, or if the body is under stress, this response can be triggered.

When we discuss genus and species of plants, the families are complex. They are not limited to items we can safely call “seasonal” issues. If your body is sensitive or has an allergy to one species, it may be wise to limit consumption of foods in that species as well to lessen your symptoms. Now, you may ask: But I’m not allergic to any foods, how can avoiding certain foods help? Let’s begin this discussion by talking about the different types of allergic responses that can occur. Allergic Responses Our bodies produce antibodies as a natural part of our immune system. They are designed to help the body mount an immune response to any type of foreign substance. This could be a substance that is viral or bacterial in nature. Often times the body produces specific antibodies in response to a particular food or plant substance. The antibodies we will be discussing here are IgA, IgE and IgG antibodies. IgE responses are immediate immune responses that signify a true allergy. Hives, throat swelling, anaphylactic reactions are common when this response is triggered by an inhaled element or ingested food one to which you are allergic. Other symptoms can 30

those foods is a wise choice and can lessen symptoms of seasonal allergies. For example, if you are allergic to grass, cross reactivity can occur with melon, tomatoes and oranges. If the issue is an allergic reaction to ragweed, avoiding banana, cantaloupe, cucumber, zucchini, honeydew and watermelon may be wise. Other common allergens that cross react with various foods are Alder tree pollen, Birch tree pollen, and Mugwort pollen. Check out the possible cross reactivity list below: Alder tree pollen: almond, apple, celery, cherry, hazelnuts, peach, pear, parsley Birch tree pollen: almond, apple, apricot, carrot, celery, cherry, coriander, fennel, hazelnut, kiwi, lychee, nectarine, orange, parsley, parsnip, peach, peanut, pear, pepper, persimmon, plum, potato, prune, soy, wheat, possibly walnuts Grass pollen: melon, tomato, orange Mugwort weed pollen: broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, coriander, garlic, fennel, mustard, onion, parsley, pepper, sunflower Orchard: cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, peanut, white potato, tomato Ragweed pollen: banana, cantaloupe, cucumber, zucchini, honeydew, watermelon, chamomile tea Timothy: Swiss chard, orange

Are there foods you can consume that can lessen your symptoms? Following an anti-inflammatory diet is sure to help considerably. Anything we can do to lessen systemic inflammation is going to help with the immune response to these plants/foods. To simplify anti-inflammatory diet guidelines for the purposes of this article, I would recommend 4 key components: 1. Decrease sugar and refined carbohydrates in the diet Sugar and the quick breakdown of refined, processed carbohydrates into sugar lends itself to systemic inflammation. When decreasing these foods, think not just desserts, but any food made from flour: crackers, breads, any food product made from dough, baked goods and chips all fall into this refined carbohydrate category. Try to consume carbohydrate foods only as they naturally appear in nature. For example, sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, and winter squashes are all great sources of complex carbohydrates.

How You Eat Affects How You Feel Reduce Your Joint Pain

2. Decrease dairy in the diet, especially that from cow’s milk. Dairy can be very inflammatory for many people. (Cow’s milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream) Note: eggs are not dairy. 3. Increase produce in the diet, particularly vegetables Most Americans fall far shy of the standard recommended 5-9 servings of produce per day. I aim for my clients to consume as close as they can to 5 servings of vegetables daily (think about the equivalent of 1 cup of cooked vegetables as a 1 serving quantity). Pay special attention to green vegetables: dark leafys such as kale, spinach, chard, Brussels and broccoli. These are nutritional powerhouses and contain VItamin C, a natural antihistamine, B vitamins, Vitamin K and minerals such as Magnesium which reduces histamine release and inflammation of the airways. For guidance on fruit intake: 2 servings per day is a good amount for the average person. Focus on low glycemic fruits: berries are excellent choices due to the amounts of antioxidants, fiber and numerous vitamins present. Citrus and kiwi are another excellent choice for their Vitamin C content. Citrus fruits, apples, onions and cabbages are all rich in quercetin: an important flavonoid that has natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming these vegetables and fruits will ensure adequate consumption of antioxidants, polyphenols, phytonutrients, B vitamins, minerals and fiber, all of which are key to reducing inflammation in the system. Remember, 1⁄2-3⁄4 of your plate should consist of vegetables. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, leading expert in the field, here are some guiding principles about vegetable intake:

Chronic pain is often caused by inflammation in the body. A poor diet will commonly contribute to joint aches and pain. Working with a nutritionist to improve your diet and lifestyle can greatly benefit how you feel on a daily basis.

• 50-75% of your plate should be nonstarchy veggies • Eat the rainbow – it’s where the phytochemical powerhouses live • Eat brassicas daily • Eat organic: EWG Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen (www.ewg.org) • Eat wild • Eat heirloom • Eat weird vegetables (Spanish black radish, gooseberries) • Try fermented foods (sauerkraut, kim chee) • Try sea vegetables (rich in iodine and minerals) • Cooking them right matters (lightly/ crunchy/preserves nutrients) 4. Increase your consumption of healthy fats The average person should consume a minimum of 4-5 servings of healthy fat per day. Olive oil, avocado or avocado oil, coconut oil, raw nuts and seeds, and wild caught fatty fish are all excellent choices. These are all anti-inflammatory fatty acids that lend themselves to keeping down systemic inflammation.

What is your gut telling you? Maintaining the integrity of your gut lining is crucial to overall immune system health. The stronger and healthier it is, the stronger and healthier you will be. This is another key component to managing allergic symptoms. The job of your digestive tract is to break down the foods you eat so that you can absorb the nutrients within them into your bloodstream and distribute them to all the cells of your body. What you eat greatly influences how efficiently it will function. There are trillions of different types of beneficial bacteria that reside in our body and those in the intestinal tract work synergistically within us to help break down nutrients and fight pathogens. Collectively, we refer to these as our microbiome. In 2008, the National Institute of Health launched the Human Microbiome Project to understand the role these bacteria play in human health and disease. Since then, scientists have been studying this incredibly expanding field of research. How does this apply to you and your allergies? The bottom line: feed your gut bacteria the right foods and they will thrive and flourish. Feed them junk, and detrimental bacteria will grow, leading to an imbalance in the bacterial ecosystem and lending itself to ill health. What foods should you feed your gut? Prebiotics are those foods that feed the good bacteria in the gut. Great prebiotic foods include those foods grown under the ground. Some excellent choices include: • Garlic • Onion • Ginger • Turmeric • Radishes

• Pickled vegetables • Miso • Kombucha Herbs: In addition to the beneficial anti-inflammatory and immune supporting foods discussed, there are many anti-inflammatory herbs that can be consumed as teas on a regular basis to help alleviate allergic rhinitis. One such recipe is listed below: Anti-Inflammatory Allergy Blend: Mix equal parts of the following in a glass container. To make the tea, measure 1 tablespoon per 8-10 ounces of hot water. Let steep for 5 minutes. 1. Rooibos: Originating from South Africa, this tea contains both rutin and quercetin, both excellent anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory agents. 2. Peppermint: Is a natural decongestant and adds a delicious component to this tea. 3. Ginger: Contains natural anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties and is a nice digestive aid. 4. Stinging Nettles: Long recommended for allergies for its anti-inflammatory properties. 5. Lemon Balm: Natural anti-inflammatory herb. 6. Local honey: You can add this at the end for its soothing properties and to add a touch of sweetness after brewed. Overall, if you suffer from seasonal allergies, and are looking for alternate ways to help manage your symptoms, these 3 key components can help:

• Rutabaga • Jerusalem artichoke

2. Implement an anti-inflammatory diet.

• Sweet potato

3. Consume foods that will serve to maintain a healthy digestive tract.

• Parsnip

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria we can consume to help maintain bacterial balance. Where do we get them? Naturally fermented foods. Consuming a small amount daily is a wonderful addition to the diet. Because dairy is so inflammatory for many and can cause adverse allergic symptoms, I do not generally recommend fermented dairy products. I do recommend the following as great options to incorporate into your diet: Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

• Sauerkraut

1. Check on your particular cross re-activities to determine which foods you should avoid in order to lessen your symptoms.

• Turnip

• Kimchi

Is Your Food Making You Sick? By Jonathan Raistrick, ND

D

oes eating make you feel tired, bloated or in pain? Do you feel certain that you are having food reactions but don’t know what to call it or where to start? We can start by classifying your reaction as sensitivity or an allergy. Food Allergy The word “allergy” is confusing because many people use it as a fully encompassing generic term for true allergic reactions and non-allergic adverse reactions, also called sensitivities or intolerances. Immune reactions can result from the different types of food allergies or food sensitivities you may possess. The most common foods causing allergic reactions are peanuts, soy, wheat, shellfish, fish, milk, eggs and tree nuts. Once identified, we recommend eliminating those problematic foods from your diet. Food allergies are divided into two major categories: immediate and delayed. When immediate food reaction occurs, sufferers experience symptoms within hours of having ingested the food. Symptom onset is rapid and may include tingling of extremities, wheezing, coughing, or tightening of the throat, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Sometimes in cases where nuts, shellfish, fish, and peanuts have been eaten, anaphylaxis can occur. Immediate food reaction is a fixed food allergy. The food to which you are allergic will almost always provoke an immune reaction when ingested. In immediate reactions the body over produces what is called Immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE). Immunoglobulin E antibodies bind to allergens and trigger an allergic response (histamine) to any substance it sees foreign. Often, the reaction isn’t severe the first time and it is the second time of exposure that the acute reaction can occur. Food Sensitivity Food sensitivity, as opposed to a food allergy, happens gradually and isn’t life threatening. Symptoms of a delayed food allergy can take up to 72 hours to appear. This type of immune response is mediated by the IgG antibody, which is the largest circulating antibody in our immune system and can cross the placenta from mother to child. IgG antibodies are the most common form of immunologic mediated food responses. It can be difficult to identify the offending food since we eat so many foods that go through different processes, and many pro-

cessed foods can have many ingredients. It is estimated that 20% of the population have adverse reactions to certain foods. Foods common in our diet may be difficult to pinpoint. Many times the foods we eat frequently and seem healthy are contributing to our health problems. Even fruits and vegetables can be triggering your immune system. Unidentified food sensitivities may contribute to a wide range of chronic health conditions including: weight gain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, autism, ADD/ADHD, eczema, chronic ear infections, gut malabsorption, insomnia and many others. Food sensitivities may be caused by many factors such as: stress, infections, overeating, artificial preservatives, additives, molds, pesticides, antibiotics, and environmental pollutants. An example (and a very common scenario) of how these sensitivities develop is one where the person is prescribed a broad spectrum antibiotic. The antibiotic upsets the normal microbiome (bacterial flora) allowing opportunistic bacteria, yeast, and parasites to grow unimpeded. Once established, an imbalance in the intestinal flora will affect normal intestinal permeability. Leaky Gut The intestine normally exhibits some permeability, which allows nutrients to pass through the gut, while also maintaining a barrier function to keep potentially harmful substances (such as antigens) from leaving the intestine and migrating to the body more widely. Once an antigen has passed through the intestinal lining, IgG antibodies bind with the food antigen causing an immunologic response. Other precursors

CT # 1587

to increased permeability may include factors such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin), alcohol, artificial preservatives, additives, molds, pesticides and environmental pollutants. In the past, elimination/challenge diets have been the gold standard for diagnosing food sensitivities. These diets however are strict and difficult to follow. Simple blood testing for IgG food sensitivities may be the answer. The Benefits of Testing 1. Helps determine if food reactions are contributing to physical or mental symptoms. 2. Removal of highly reactive foods from the diet is a non-invasive, food-based therapy that often mitigates a patient's symptoms. 3. Research and clinical studies suggest food allergies identified by IgG testing can be a major contributing factor in many chronic health conditions. 4. Food rotation and elimination diets can reduce stress on the immune system, lower gut inflammation, resolve food cravings, and reduce the potential for eating disorders. Food should be nourishing and supportive to your body and your wellness. There is no reason what you eat should make you sick. If you feel you are having issues with certain foods, visit your naturopathic physician to detangle the cause, and consider using an elimination diet or testing to take control of your health. Natural Treatment For Menopause

By J. Erika Dworkin, Certified Lifestyle Educator Rather than use estrogens to artificially counteract the symptoms of menopause, the natural approach focuses on improving physiology through diet, exercise, nutritional supplementation, and the use of botanical medicines. - Michael T. Murray, ND, & Joseph Pizzorno, ND The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (3rd Ed.2012)

A

re you over age 40 and noticing that your body has been changing? Are you confused about how to address those changes? No two women experience menopause in exactly the same way, and very often other health issues are present that can complicate treatment. If you prefer to rely on holistic means of addressing your body’s natural signs of aging, the information below can help you start moving in the right direction. What is Menopause? Menopause is a normal physiological process that can be narrowly defined as the cessation of menstruation for 6-12 months. On average, it sets in around age 51, but can also occur as early as age 40. Perimenopause, the time before menopause defined as the shortening of the menstrual cycle, can produce various symptoms for as many as 10-12 years, but more commonly for 4-7 years. Declining gland function (hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and ovary) is viewed as the root cause of peri/menopause. Genetics, age, diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors also contribute to onset. Menopause generally occurs when the ovaries no longer produce viable eggs, and the absence of active follicles (the cellular housing of the eggs) causes reduced production of estrogen and progesterone.

34

Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

Menstruation ceases when the reduction in estrogen production stops thickening the uterus lining. Estrogen levels drop 40-60% (the ovaries, adrenal glands, and body fat continue to make it), but progesterone levels can drop to near zero in some women. Surgical removal of the ovaries, or uterus and cervix (hysterectomy), along with chemotherapy and drugs designed to shut down ovarian estrogen production, can also induce menopause. Menopause Symptoms Every woman’s menopause transition is unique, and some have minimal-to-no symptoms. Within the first 4 years, however, roughly 75% of women can experience, with varying degree and frequency, various physical, mental, and emotional symptoms, including: (1) irregular menses (frequency/ flow); (2) night sweats and/or daytime hot flashes (the most common symptom; dilation of the peripheral blood vessels that leads to increased skin temperature and skin flushing); (3) headaches; (4) atrophic vaginitis (vaginal thinning/dryness that can cause painful intercourse and vaginal infection, itching or burning); (5) cosmetic changes (skin dryness/wrinkles/acne, head hair loss, facial hair growth, gum disease, dry eyes, weight gain); (6) fatigue; (7) decreased libido/arousal/orgasmic response; (8) emotional changes (depression/irritability/ anxiety/feelings of overwhelm); (9) reduced memory/cognition; (10) insomnia; (11) heart palpitations/increased heart rate; (12) dizziness/nausea; (13) UTIs/incontinence; (14) frozen shoulder syndrome and joint pain; and (15) voice changes. According to John R. Lee, M.D., the pioneering researcher and proponent of natural progesterone cream, “estrogen dominance” (the existence of excess estrogen relative to progesterone) is a key cause of menopausal symptoms. (See Progesterone Cream next page)

The Conventional Approach Any practitioner-devised menopause treatment plan should begin with the review of a woman’s complete medical history and a physical exam. Rather than treating both hormonal changes and attendant, related other health issues separately, mainstream doctors commonly treat all symptoms of menopausal imbalance with a 1-to-4 year prescription of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), various high-dose natural and synthetic estrogens and progestin (synthetic progesterone). The 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study showed that synthetic PremPro (a combination of Premarin, conjugated estrogen made from pregnant mares’ urine, and progestin) increased the risk of breast cancer, blood clots, strokes, and coronary heart, liver, and gallbladder diseases. Moreover, Dr. Lee has maintained that there are, “reams of evidence that synthetic estrogens are highly toxic and carcinogenic,” particularly when unopposed (i.e., taken without any progesterone). Michael Murray, ND, has asserted that the synthetic versions of progesterone used in HRT “are likely to be even more problematic than the conjugated (synthetic) estrogens.” Tori Hudson, ND, has maintained that, while HRT poses in most women (those without estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer genes, family histories of breast cancer, or current breast cancer issues) only a slight risk for breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke; natural bio-identical hormone treatment decreases these risks. She also cautions that women who start HRT 10 or more years after menopause may have a slightly increased risk of heart disease. Moreover, although HRT often is not necessary to treat menopausal symptoms, some experts argue that it may be indicated for women with osteoporosis or at high risk for this disease, especially if they cannot tolerate osteoporosis medications.

Supportive Lifestyle Changes While the natural remedies discussed below may alone provide menopausal symptom relief, regular exercise and a health-promoting/cancer-prevention diet can greatly complement their benefits. Studies of menopausal women have established that exercising moderately at least 3 times per week (for a total of at least 3.5 hours) can improve: (1) hot flashes and the resulting reduction in brain blood flow; (2) bone loss and cholesterol; (3) heart function/ blood pressure/circulation; (4) mood, self-esteem, energy/endurance, and the ability to cope with stress; (5) oxygen levels and nutrient utilization in all tissues; (6) breast cancer risk; and (7) BMI and body fat. Consuming less animal-based foods, but more that are organic and plant-based, especially those high in phytoestrogens, is one dietary change that a menopausal woman can make to reduce her symptoms. Phytoestrogens are plant-derived substances that weakly bind to estrogen receptors, and thus have a weak estrogenic effect in some tissues, and a weak anti-estrogenic effect in others. Phytoestrogenic foods, which some studies establish are cancer-protective, include non-GMO/organic soy (ideally 45-90 grams/day, the range in a traditional Asian diet), sesame seeds, apples, celery, carrots, coffee, oats, barley, legumes (lentils, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, peas, black beans), and yams. Any woman concerned about consuming these foods should discuss this option with a holistic practitioner. (See also Soy Isoflavones next page) Proven Botanicals & Nutritional Supplements Scientific evidence supports the safe use of the herbs and nutrients discussed below to address menopausal symptoms. When trying them, use the lowest effective dose and duration consistent with health goals.

start of use, and then every 3-6 months thereafter. Studies also show that it more effectively combats hot flashes, depression, anxiety, and insomnia when combined with Saint John’s Wort extract. Kava Kava: Studies have shown that, even in the first week of use, a woman using this root extract (not the leaf), ideally standardized for 70% kavalactones, may see improvements in hot flashes/night sweats, insomnia, anxiety/heart palpitations/chest pains, dizziness, and depression. The typical dose is 100mg, 3 times per day. Maca: Although there are 175 different species with unequal physiological impact, limited evidence has made this non-hormonal, cruciferous root from the Peruvian Andes best known for its potential to improve libido and general sexual dysfunction in both sexes. Clinical research of early-postmenopausal women has shown the variety Lepidium peruvianum to have

potential for reducing HRT dependence in that it stimulates production of progesterone and estradiol (E2, the strongest form of estrogen that the ovaries produce), relieves hot flashes/night sweats, improves bone density, blood pressure and body weight, and reduces insomnia, anxiety/nervousness, depression, and heart palpitations. Dosing ranges from 2-3.5g/day, depending on the variety used. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil): Preliminary studies have shown that fish oil can reduce hot flashes and depression in menopausal women. Effective dosing depends on the frequency and severity of symptoms. In one 2009 8-week study of 120 menopausal women, researchers provided subjects with 1,200mg EPA+DHA. Other researchers in a smaller 2011 study discovered these results when administering 2g/day of fish oil, or a total of 1,680 mg EPA + 750 mg DHA.

Black Cohosh: This most frequently studied herbal alternative for menopause has proven highly effective for hot flashes/ night sweats and mood swings (it acts like an SSRI to boost serotonin, the moodelevating hormone and neurotransmitter), insomnia, and body aches. Studies show that it not only positively affects the brain/ hypothalamus, bone, and vagina, but also poses no cancer risk to the breast or uterus, including in breast cancer patients, in part because it does not contain phytoestrogens and has no estrogenic action. Progesterone Cream (Natural/Bioidentical Compounded or OTC): John Lee, MD, pioneered the use of this remedy and used it in his clinical practice for almost 10 years. He maintained that estrogen is a potent and potentially dangerous hormone when not balanced by adequate progesterone. Not to be confused with synthetic progestins or Mexican wild yam/diosgenin/ dioscorea (which the body cannot use to make progesterone), natural progesterone cream is created in a lab to match the identical molecular configuration of the body’s progesterone. Progesterone supplementation is intended to restore normal physiologic levels of bioavailable progesterone, ideally based on a saliva, urine, or blood test, which should be conducted on a regular basis. While a holistic practitioner can prescribe a custom-formulated, pharmacy-compounded cream, certain OTC products containing a total of 9001,000mg of progesterone in two ounces, or approximately 20 mg in ¼ teaspoon, have also proven safe and effective. Soy Isoflavones: Information about the safety of phytoestrogenic soy can be confusing. Soy contains isoflavones (e.g., genistein, daidzein), antioxidant polyphenols that are viewed as phytoestrogens because of their molecular similarity to estradiol (E2), one type of estrogen linked to cancer. Estrogen influences cells through estrogen receptors. Beginning in the late 1990s, scientists discovered the cancer-inhibiting effect of certain estrogen receptors (ERbeta), the primary influence of isoflavones on these receptors, and a favorable soy isoflavone –cancer connection. Even the American Cancer Society has recognized

that soy isoflavones have anti-estrogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, and some studies show that isoflavones are breast and endometrial cancer protective. In women who do not include soy in their diets, 45-90mg/day of non-GMO soy isoflavone supplements, when taken with a probiotic to ensure their conversion to equol (a non-steroidal phytoestrogen compound) can safely, effectively reduce hot flashes. Soy consumption can also improve vaginal atrophy, bone density, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Vitamin E: Limited, older studies have proven this versatile antioxidant effective in relieving hot flashes and atrophic vaginitis, though its mechanism is not fully understood. While one study showed that 400 IU/day relieved vaginal problems in 50% of the postmenopausal subjects, up to 3,000 IU/day is generally safe and may be necessary to produce results. Vitamin E suppositories, oil, or creams/ointments can also provide vaginal relief. Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

Practical Divine Wisdom

Universe brings important Soul relationships to us 90% of the time, verses finding them ourselves the other 10% of the time. As you build your attribute list I can help you see where you honestly stand in comparison to your desired attributes. My expertise is in supporting you to heal your past wounds and help you make a growth plan for your future. Then, when you are ready to explore the higher vibrational realms in seeking your Soul Mate, I’d be honored to help guide you through your journey.

from Robin Clare

By Robin Clare ear Robin: I have always been searching for my true Soul Mate. I am a deeply spiritual person, fulfilled at work and volunteer my time for causes important to me, but I still struggle with feeling like my life would be more complete if only I found my Soul Mate. What can I do to attract my Soul Mate into my life? - Ellen from CT. Dear Ellen: The desire for both women and men to attract in their true Soul Mate activates two self-limiting beliefs. The first limiting belief is that our true Soul Mate must be a romantic partner and the second limiting belief is that we only have one Soul Mate.

D

The notion of a Soul Mate being a romantic partner seems to be a predominately female viewpoint. Just because you and another love each other deeply does not automatically make you Soul Mates. If we are fortunate to meet a partner with whom to share our life, that person is more likely to be your Earth Mate not your Soul Mate. This unrecognized difference has caused many an unfortunate dis-connect between couples. The idea of there being only one true Soul Mate is false. Prior to your incarnation, you decided to invite many members of your Soul Family to come into your earthly life at various points. These Soul Mates may be your parents, your siblings, friends, partners – and, surprisingly, they may also be your dreaded adversaries! Yes, even your dreaded adversaries are here to “mate” with your Soul so that you may learn the truths about your Soul’s journey. Most often, these truths are incredibly important for this incarnation. Your Soul Mates may also include animals – consider your beloved pets - and even Mother Nature, herself. Have you ever walked on a beautiful beach and felt like you were Home? Or sat under a special tree and read a book, feeling a deep connection to the tree itself? All of these are exception-

al sources of Soul Mates. So, in response to your question, “What can I do to attract my true Soul Mate into my life?”, I would reply with, “You may wish to be careful what you ask for!” You need to be aware that having a relationship with a true Soul Mate requires you to not only manage the day-to-day opportunities and challenges of your worldly relationships but also the intricacies of a committed Soul relationship. I’m not saying “Don’t ask”; but if you choose to do so, it should be with eyes wide open and with an experienced guide at your side to help you navigate these high-vibrational waters. Perhaps your better first request might be: “What can I do to attract my perfect Earth Mate into my life?” To attract your ideal Earth Mate, you must make sure that you are living the attributes that you are looking for in this other person. If you are lacking in the key attributes that you desire in the other, then perhaps you need to heal and grow within your own life and expand your vibration. In other words, you must create a vibrational resonance that is a match to the person you want to meet. If you are not vibrating at that same level, how will you ever notice each other? According to Carolyn Myss, global spirituality expert, the

The Secret Language of Your Body

M

onday mornings we have more suicides, strokes, illnesses and heart attacks. I think our bodies are trying very hard to tell us something about how our lives, jobs, relationships and attitudes affect our bodies and our health. Centuries ago in the Gospel of St. Thomas, Jesus shared these words: “If you bring forth what is within you what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” If we do not pay attention to our feelings and the messages from our body then our body will assume we do not enjoy life and get us out of here as quickly as possible. His words present us with further insight; He who seeks to save his life will lose it but he who is willing to lose his life will save it. To stop living your untrue self’s life, which others imposed upon you, and to eliminate not yourself but what is killing you. Thus, by paying attention to the messages from within your body, saving your life. What we have to say is never anything new but it is practical and oriented to your life and time. Yes, you can be born again and restore your body to its healthiest state while letting it guide you to healing your life. A healed life carries many benefits, one of which can be a cured disease. Just as bacteria, viruses and plants alter their genetic make up to resist antibiotics, vaccines and weather changes, we are capable of inner healing too. It is a lot harder for us because our lives are a lot more complicated, but if we listen to the messages from our intelligent cells and create an internal environment which nurtures life than self-induced healing can become a more frequent occurrence.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2018

First, you must be willing to pay attention to your body and feelings and not live solely in your head and thoughts. Distractions and drugs are not the proper response to your feelings. As a lawyer said in a time of crisis, and being a lawyer can be a serious illness, “I came to a conclusion that was imminently reasonable, totally logical and completely wrong because while learning to think I almost forgot how to feel.” The reason most people have a hard time paying attention to their feelings is because their feelings are painful. The majority of people grow up with mottoes to die by rather than mottoes to live by. They need to abandon their painful pasts and get over the destructive messages received from various authority figures such as parents, teachers, clergy, doctors and others. The effect of their words upon children, up to the age of six, is hypnotic and very difficult for them to overcome when they grow older and become conscious of the destructive nature of the messages and the toll they are taking upon their bodies and health. Often the search for better feelings leads to a variety of addictions and violent behavior due to their damaged nervous systems. The language of your body doesn’t have to remain a secret. We do not want you to awaken to life due to a major disaster to become strong at the broken places. We would like you to learn from your body how to survive and be strong enough to stand up to the forces of nature while still supple enough to bend when the circumstances require it. By bringing meaning to your symptoms you can be guided to heal. Pain is necessary for us to protect and define ourselves. If we never experienced pain it would be a disaster for our lives and bodies. But when we give the pain or affliction meaning we do not have to suffer. Pain and suffering are two distinct entities. Consciousness is non-local and we need to tune into the messages we are receiving. Since organ recipients can tell you about the lives of their donors we must realize our life is stored within us.
