Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be back in Connecticut, and I’m excited for some of the things I love about spring— the scent of lilacs (my favorite flower), newly unfurled bright green leaves on the trees, the gorgeous colors of all the spring flowers, and spending more time with my mom (pictured with me!). Early May is also a time when I have a little break between publishing schedules so I try to focus more on my self-care. I’m thrilled to tell you that we sold out this issue, so I definitely need some relaxation and rejuvenation!

“Many

people I know think of massage or bodywork or visiting the spa as a “luxury”— something they treat themselves to once or twice a year, if that! It’s time to educate people that self-care is not something to be viewed as a luxury—it’s a necessity!”

—Dr.

Diane Hayden, PhD

I regularly see a bodyworker/massage therapist and acupuncturist and fiercely protect my self-care time. A couple of things I’ve added to my regimen this year is red light therapy (check out the article by Jackie O’Keefe) and floating (don’t miss the article by Michele Beaule). I highly encourage you to try them, and you will love Jackie and Michele! Both therapies have been amazing for reducing my stress levels, not to mention the other huge health benefits all of these modalities offer—pain resolution, lowering blood pressure, detoxification, healthy heart function, increased immunity, and the list goes on.

Sadly, many people I know think of massage or bodywork or visiting the spa as a “luxury”—something they treat themselves to once or twice a year, if that! It’s time to educate people that self-care is not something to be viewed as a luxury—it’s a necessity! That’s why this issue’s Spotlight is on Bodyworkers, Acupuncture and Holistic Spas. Plus, with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day around the corner, it’s a great time to give self-care as a gift.

Here are five tips to start practicing self-care in your daily life:

1 Find time each day to meditate and be still. Even if it’s only a five-minute walk outdoors in nature or five minutes in a quiet space in your home.

2. Find one thing you can do each day for thirty minutes to an hour to relieve stress. It could be exercise, yoga, listening to music, floating, massage, red light therapy, reading a book or whatever works for you.

3. Create a morning ritual. It could be meditating, journaling, or going for a walk. This sets you up to have a stress free and productive day.

4. Take time at the beginning of each week to organize and plan your goals and tasks for the week or do some meal planning. A Sunday afternoon or evening can be perfect for this and starting the week off organized will do wonders in reducing your stress.

5. At the end of each day, write down three things you are truly grateful for. This ends your day on a positive note and clears your mind so you can fall asleep faster.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Dr. Korene Varano, ND, FABNO, RN Limbitless Wholistic Health at Roots Medical Center

Attwelve years old, I was given a 50/50 chance of surviving bone cancer. I beat the odds after finding naturopathic medicine and incorporating its therapeutic modalities with my conventional therapies. That is when I knew I wanted to study naturopathic oncology and dedicate my life to researching ways to enhance conventional cancer therapies and target cancer cells with naturopathic modalities. In adulthood, I chose leg amputation after multiple failed attempts at limb salvage surgeries. Being an athlete and living an active lifestyle was not conducive to femur transplants. This was the driving influence in developing Limbitless Wholistic Health, LLC.

I’m Dr. Korene Varano, a licensed naturopathic doctor, Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology, and registered nurse in Connecticut. I have worked in oncology healthcare for twenty-two years and it is my goal to build hope, strength, and courage with each patient and family member I encounter. I offer education and research information to help empower my patients to make informed healthcare decisions for their individual health needs. My offerings include:

• Oncology-focused, comprehensive consultations with a therapeutic plan, either in-office or via telemedicine

•Second opinion consultation via telemedicine

• Evidence-based supplement plans and individualized nutrition planning

• Research evidence-based therapies including colon hydrotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, IV nutrient infusion therapy, FANGO detox therapy, and biocharger

• Specialty testing, including RGCC CTC testing and tumor markers

Patients can expect a thorough evaluation of their current health status and an individualized plan that works synergistically with whatever conventional modalities they may be using or plan to use. I have patients who use every plan: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, or other, and patients who do not want to use any conventional therapies. Naturopathic oncology modalities that work independently as well as synergistically with conventional modalities are available.

I have walked the long path as a cancer patient and now live the long life as a cancer survivor, understanding the experiences my patients go through at all milestones of the journey. Living with cancer is living with a trauma that is only known by those who have experienced it, and that is what sets me apart from other practitioners in the oncology healthcare field.

I plan to continue to incorporate researched targeted nutrients and modalities that kill cancer cells and expand the scope and standard of cancer care. It is my hope that people living with cancer will be treated as thriving individuals with quality of life as they undergo therapies that eliminate cancer cells. I want my practice to be a space of healing, not a place of business. Healing comes in all forms—mind, body, and/or spirit. Watching the healing transformation of patients in my care is my greatest blessing.

Strengthening Bonds: A Mother-Daughter Retreat

Storytelling has been an intrinsic part of human connection since the beginning of time. Across generations, cultures, and families, stories weave a tapestry of shared experiences, emotions, and lessons. But beyond their entertainment value, stories hold a unique power—especially between mothers and daughters. They provide a bridge between generations, fostering deeper under standing, strengthening bonds, and shaping the way we see ourselves and each other.

Growing up, my relationship with my mother was filled with love and distance, warmth and unpredictability. Silence built walls between us, leaving emotions unspoken and stories untold. When I became a mother, I vowed to break the cycle—choosing openness, sharing my journey, and inviting my daughter to do the same. Through story telling, we built a bridge of trust and understanding, strengthening our bond in ways I never imagined. Now, you can embark on this journey, too.

Join us for a powerful four-hour experience designed to deepen relationships, enhance communication, and foster mutual understanding. What awaits you:

• Guided exercises to deepen understanding and communication

• Story-sharing to gain new perspectives and foster connection

• Mindfulness and gratitude practices to strengthen your bond

Event details:

• Date: May 17, 2025, 1 p.m.–5 p.m.

Dr. Brian Ruggiero

Ruggiero Family Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center

I’m Dr. Brian Ruggiero, owner of Ruggiero Family Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center in Downtown Manchester, where I’ve been helping patients for the past twenty years. As a chiropractor, acupuncturist, hypnotherapist, energy worker, and Qest4 bioenergetic practitioner, I offer a comprehensive approach to healing, addressing the root causes of pain and imbalances in the body, mind, and spirit.

My passion for holistic healing stems from my belief that true wellness is achieved by restoring balance across all aspects of a person’s being. Over the years, I’ve learned that integrating diverse therapeutic techniques allows me to provide more effective and individualized care for my patients.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend chiropractic care, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, energy healing, and bioenergetics to treat the whole person. One pivotal moment in my practice was when a patient with persistent gluteal pain, despite proper structural alignment, revealed that emotional stress was the true source of her discomfort.

This experience deepened my understanding of the mindbody connection and sparked my curiosity about energy work. It reinforced my commitment to a holistic approach that empowers my patients to heal on a deeper level, addressing both physical and emotional imbalances. My goal is to help individuals achieve optimal health and enhance their quality of life—not just by alleviating symptoms but by restoring harmony across their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Milford Med Spa

Iam a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner and owner of Holistic Healing Partners LLC, operating as Milford Med Spa. With over twenty years of experience as a geriatric and wound care specialist, I expanded my focus to medical aesthetics and menopause care. Since 2019, I’ve been blending Eastern and Western medicine to offer a holistic approach to health and wellness.

At Milford Med Spa, I specialize in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, medical weight loss, biostimulating treatments, IV infusions, and more. We also offer spa facials, massage, Reiki, and acupuncture, providing a full range of services to enhance your overall well-being. My focus is on helping individuals navigate perimenopause, menopause, and testosterone depletion with personalized hormone evaluations and treatments.

My personal journey with hormone imbalance deeply shaped my career. In my mid-thirties, I began struggling with sleep issues, anxiety, and a significant drop in libido. Unfortunately, I was prescribed antidepressants, which only made things worse. It wasn’t until I found hormone care that my life changed, and this experience inspired me to help other women going through similar challenges.

Symptoms like tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), anxiety, joint pain (like frozen shoulder), urinary tract infections, and worsened attention deficit disorder are often overlooked as signs of perimenopause. I help my clients understand these connections and find solutions.

The most rewarding part of my work is seeing clients regain control of their lives, improving physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’m passionate about empowering women to feel their best through holistic hormone care.

Ethan DeFord Integrative Alchemy

Ibring a unique perspective from an unusual set of skills in the growing holistic wellness world. I have woven my professional background in biochemical and biomechanical systems engineering with my 30+ year personal development journey through Eastern philosophy and medicine and supplemented that with a never-ending self-driven study of what it is to be a healthy human being—body, mind, heart, and spirit. My continuing work within myself and with my clients is building a rich, intuitive, and dynamic program that I am so pleased to share.

Integrative Alchemy is a call to recognize that every part of our life is a component of our health and that we already have everything we need to live a joyful, fulfilling life. I find this so important to share as we become increasingly disenfranchised by a “healthcare” system more focused on sickness and disorder than health and more specialized in heroic, life-saving measures than everyday care.

My mission is to cultivate a culture in which taking care of ourselves is accessible and appealing. I want to share the understanding that positive health is possible, and more than the absence of illness or injury.

What I call Holistic Manual Therapy is a touch-based therapy practice (massage and beyond) aimed at helping people find peace, ease, and strength of mind, heart, and body. I work with clients to develop a foundation that promotes Listening to your body more deeply and accepting the full spectrum of what you find. Your acceptance helps my touch release tension and generate peace, which in turn allows us to liberate you from immobility and pain. We can literally rearrange our lives by rearranging our bodies if we are ready to become an active participant in our own health.

My coaching work is based in mindfulness, and it is always customized to the unique and vital needs of each individual. Regardless of the path we take, with you at the helm, my goal is to make sure that you are serving your whole well-being rather than tending to one aspect of health and neglecting another. I aim to help you cultivate deeper and broader awareness, inside and out, so that you can guide your own life and health with confidence.

I specialize in this coaching approach in helping individuals and couples (including CNM-style relationships) cultivate superior communication and connection skills to stabilize and enrich their relationships. Our relationships can either be a source of tremendous strength or a burden of significant weight. Together, we have the opportunity to learn how to create, tend to, and grow healthy relationships. Book a free discovery session today to learn how I can help you on your personal health journey! Sessions can be in person in Guilford or via telehealth.

Yoga for Treatment and Healing from Complex Trauma and PTSD: Part 1

“Researchers suggest that complex PTSD includes the symptoms of PTSD as outlined in the DSM-5, along with challenges in self-organization, which can be seen through emotional changes, negative self-image, and struggles in building relationships with others.”

—Nanci Kaczegowicz, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, APHN-BC

Yoga has a rich history that goes back nearly 5000 years in Indian texts and is now recognized as an integrative therapy to support mental health and enhance overall well-being. Research shows that practicing yoga can help improve conditions such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, sleep issues, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By incorporating mindful movements, yoga can assist in regulating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) during times of stress, particularly for those who have faced complex trauma and PTSD. Trauma center trauma-sensitive yoga (TCTSY) serves as a bodycentered approach to aid in treatment and healing from complex trauma and PTSD.

Trauma

Complex trauma refers to the repeated traumatic experiences that some people face during childhood or adolescence, which can manifest as a more intricate version of PTSD. This type of trauma often involves threats of physical harm or death, and while it may also involve serious emotional or physical injuries, such as unwanted sexual contact, the specifics can vary greatly. Complex trauma is recognized as a diagnosable condition under the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), although this hasn’t yet been incorporated into clinical practice guidelines.

Identifying complex trauma may be difficult because it’s often more of a subjective diagnosis than PTSD, which has clear definitions and parameters in the diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM-5) To receive a PTSD diagnosis, an individual over the age of six needs to meet specific criteria for more than one month, as outlined in the DSM-5 TR.

• Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence results in at least one intrusive symptom: distressing memories, dreams, dissociative reactions,

intense or prolonged psychological distress, or a significant physiological response to internal or external cues that remind the individual of the traumatic event.

• The individual actively avoids reminders of the traumatic event and experiences negative thoughts or moods due to heightened reactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).

• The traumatic event causes negative thoughts or emotions, such as gaps in memory related to the trauma, exaggerated negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, distorted thinking that leads to self-blame, a persistent negative emotional state, decreased interest and participation in meaningful activities, feelings of detachment or estrangement from others, and the inability to experience positive emotions.

• The individual experiences heightened arousal and reactivity that begins or worsens following the traumatic event, as evidenced by irritability, unprovoked anger, reckless or self-destructive behavior, hypervigilance, an exaggerated startle response, difficulty concentrating, or sleep disturbances.

Researchers suggest that complex PTSD includes the symptoms of PTSD as outlined in the DSM-5, along with challenges in self-organization, which can be seen through emotional changes, negative selfimage, and struggles in building relationships with others. While about two-thirds of people who face a traumatic event do not experience lasting psychological or physiological effects, the remaining one-third might experience chronic complex PTSD symptoms and may benefit from therapeutic interventions.

Yoga Roots

The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit root “yuj” meaning to yoke, unite, or join—in essence, it is the union of mind, body, and spirit. Ashtanga

yoga, otherwise known as the eight limbs of yoga, is the philosophical underpinnings of yoga practice. The eight limbs of yoga encompass the Yamas (moral/ethical/social conduct), Niyamas (personal conduct), Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breathing practices), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (contemplation), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (self-realization or union with the divine).

The Yamas incorporate the five ethical and moral social constructs of the following:

•Ahimsa: compassion towards self and others

•Satya: dedication to truthfulness and integrity

•Astheya: honesty and generosity

•Brahmacharya: moderation and balancing of vital life force energy

•Aparigraha: abundance and fulfillment

The five Niyamas include the following personal ethical guidelines:

•Saucha: simplicity and purity

•Santosha: peace and contentment

•Tapas: purification

•Swadhaya: the study of the divine and self

•Iswara Pranidhana: devotion/faith

Yoga is an ancient practice with a fascinating history. It continues to gain popularity as a health and fitness practice for people around the world. This interest has encouraged researchers to look closely at how it benefits our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Practices like yoga can be wonderful in helping us lower stress and build resilience when facing tough times. It’s important to remember that we all respond to stressful or traumatic experiences differently. Our unique reactions can be shaped by various factors, including our stress levels, genetic makeup, early connections with caregivers, and the specific circumstances of the event itself.

Please see our next issue, coming in July 2025, for Part 2 of this article, which will take a more in-depth look at the relationships between therapeutic yoga, trauma, and nervous system processes.

From Chronic Pain to Healing: The Transformative Power of StemWave

TM Therapy

“As a naturopathic physician with over 15 years of experience working with patients suffering from chronic pain and inflammatory conditions, I understand that effective healing goes beyond just treating local symptoms.”

—Dr. Dana Lapointe, ND

Are you tired of dealing with chronic pain? You’re not alone. The following brief stories represent three patients who are dealing with chronic pain.

• Arthur is a retired golfer who recently “tweaked” an old sports injury. It’s become a constant nagging pain, making it tough to get on the course or even out of bed. He fears losing the sport he loves and wonders if this is the beginning of the “downward spiral” of old age.

• Tom, a 45-year-old remote worker, spends long hours hunched over his computer. His neck and back pain have progressed, affecting his concentration, job performance, family life, and sleep. Exhaustion makes everything harder.

• Amy, a mother of two, loves hiking on weekends but now struggles with persistent knee pain. She’s had two cortisone injections. The first seemed a miracle but wore off too soon. The second barely touched it. She was referred to a surgeon who told her that, since it’s not quite “bone-on-bone” yet, she could hold off before eventually having a knee replacement. The hiking that once brought her joy has turned into a painful reminder of her limitations. Frustrated and tired of over-thecounter pain relievers, Amy feels like she’s run out of good options.

These stories illustrate the impact of musculoskeletal pain and the often-elusive search for effective relief. You might have a similar story.

Technology That May Change Everything

If you’re tired of temporary fixes and hesitant about surgery, StemWave may be the answer.

Imagine waking up free from nagging pain—no more stiff joints, aches, or nerve discomforts. A new technology, StemWave, is revolutionizing pain management with a natural, noninvasive solution. StemWave is an FDA-listed medical device that uses focused shockwave therapy to activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. By delivering harmless acoustic waves to areas of pain and inflammation, StemWave promotes healing without drugs, injections, or surgery. This approach not only alleviates discomfort but also stimulates tissue repair for faster recovery.

At its core, StemWave therapy delivers acoustic waves to damaged tissues, activating dormant cells and encouraging natural repair. An initial consultation helps pinpoint the source of your pain and allows your practitioner to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. StemWave is effective for joint pain, stiffness, back and neck pain, chronic muscle tension, neuropathies, and post-injury recovery.

Treatments initiate ongoing cellular repair that continues long after the short sessions. Unlike invasive treatments, StemWave therapy allows you to resume daily activities with little to no downtime. And unlike other acoustic therapies, StemWave creates a true “shock wave,” an instantaneous event that provokes a biological healing response. This leads to pain relief, inflammation reduction, immune stimulation, stem cell proliferation, enhanced blood flow, and tissue regeneration. This mechanism is unique to shockwave therapy.

As more people experience StemWave, more success stories are being told. Many patients report significant improvement after just a few sessions. Several prestigious sports teams, including the UConn Huskies, are now benefitting from this

therapy. Athletes recover faster, and individuals find lasting relief from chronic pain.

What to Look for in a Practitioner for Your Chronic Pain

While StemWave therapy is an innovative tool for pain relief and recovery, selecting the right practitioner to guide you through this journey is crucial. Not all practitioners approach treatment in the same way.

When seeking a practitioner, look for someone who is not only clinically trained and experienced in administering StemWave, but also dedicated to treating you as a whole person. Your journey to pain relief should be personalized, compassionate, and focused on achieving long-lasting results.

As a naturopathic physician with over 15 years of experience working with patients suffering from chronic pain and inflammatory conditions, I understand that effective healing goes beyond just treating local symptoms.

In my practice, I take a holistic approach to health, addressing not only the immediate discomfort but also the underlying causes of chronic inflammation. This means uncovering the lifestyle factors and nutritional choices that contribute to chronic pain and helping you make lifestyle adjustments to enhance your overall well-being. By integrating StemWave therapy into a comprehensive treatment plan, I aim to accelerate your healing while optimizing your health span—ensuring that you not only feel better but also thrive in your daily life.

If you’re ready to explore the future of pain relief, consider scheduling an initial consultation to see how StemWave technology can transform your life. You deserve to move, feel, and live better, and this groundbreaking therapy may provide the relief you’ve been seeking.

Dr. Dana Lapointe is a passionate advocate for innovative, noninvasive treatments and has been at the forefront of bringing StemWave therapy to her community. Practicing in CT since 2010, she offers telemedicine, online coaching, and group wellness programs. She specializes in lifestyle medicine for chronic conditions (especially those involving the gut, skin, weight, and pain syndromes), and mental wellness coaching. Can CBD Really Improve Women’s Sexual Experience?

“CBD’s ability to promote relaxation and mood stabilization can foster a deeper sense of emotional intimacy. By reducing mental clutter and promoting mindfulness, CBD can help women feel more present and connected during intimate moments.”
—Ira Ratner

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is gaining attention for its potential benefits in many areas, including sexual health. This article looks at how CBD might enhance women’s sexual experiences. This article explores how CBD can improve a woman’s sex life by addressing common sexual concerns, reducing stress, enhancing pleasure, and promoting overall relaxation.

Understanding CBD

CBD is a compound found in cannabis plants. Unlike THC, another compound from the same plant, CBD does not make you high. In the U.S., hemp-based CBD products with under 0.3% THC are federally legal. This has led to a surge in the availability of CBD in various forms, such as oils, creams, and edibles.

CBD functions through its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system helps regulate mood, pain, and stress response in the body. It is believed that CBD’s effects on this system contribute to its potential health advantages.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety

One of the most significant barriers to a satisfying sex life for women is stress and anxiety. Work pressures, relationship issues, and personal insecurities can all contribute to mental tension, making it difficult to be present during intimate moments. By reducing anxiety levels, CBD can help women feel more relaxed and connected to their partners, ultimately leading to a more enjoyable sexual experience.

Enhancing Arousal and Lubrication

Arousal and natural lubrication are essential for a pleasurable sexual experience. However, many women struggle with vaginal dryness due to hormonal fluctuations, menopause, or certain medications. CBD-infused lubricants and oils can enhance blood flow to the genital area, increasing sensitivity and improving natural lubrication. This can lead to greater comfort and heightened pleasure during intercourse.

Additionally, CBD’s interaction with cannabinoid receptors in the body may stimulate blood circulation and promote nerve sensitivity, contributing to a more intense and satisfying sexual response. Women who experience difficulty in achieving arousal may find that CBD helps in overcoming these challenges naturally.

Alleviating Pain and Discomfort

Pain during intercourse, known as dyspareunia, is a common issue affecting many women. This discomfort can be due to conditions such as endometriosis, vaginismus, pelvic inflammatory disease, or postpartum recovery. CBD has powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties that may help reduce discomfort and make sexual activity more pleasurable. Topical CBD products, such as creams and lubricants, can be applied directly to affected areas to provide localized relief and ease tension in the muscles.

Boosting Confidence and Body Positivity

Self-esteem and body image play a significant role in a woman’s sexual confidence. Women who struggle with negative self-perception may find it difficult to enjoy intimacy fully. CBD’s calming

effects on the nervous system can help reduce self-conscious thoughts, allowing women to focus more on pleasure rather than insecurities. Feeling relaxed and confident in one’s body can significantly enhance sexual experiences and strengthen intimate connections with a partner.

Enhancing

Emotional Connection with a Partner

Emotional intimacy is just as important as physical connection when it comes to a fulfilling sex life. Stress, anxiety, and past traumas can create emotional barriers that prevent women from fully opening up to their partners. CBD’s ability to promote relaxation and mood stabilization can foster a deeper sense of emotional intimacy. By reducing mental clutter and promoting mindfulness, CBD can help women feel more present and connected during intimate moments.

How to Use CBD for Sexual Enhancement

Women interested in incorporating CBD into their sex lives can explore various forms, including these:

• CBD-infused lubricants: Enhance sensitivity and reduce discomfort during intercourse.

• CBD oils and tinctures: Taken sublingually, these help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

• Topical CBD creams: Provide localized relief f or pain and muscle tension.

When choosing a CBD product, prioritizing quality is essential. Consumers should choose products tested by independent labs to ensure purity and potency. Opt for high-quality hemp products with clear CBD labels and low THC. This ensures legal compliance and effectiveness.

CBD offers a natural and holistic approach to improving a woman’s sex life by addressing common challenges such as stress, anxiety, pain, hormonal imbalances, and low libido. By promoting relaxation, enhancing arousal, and fostering emotional intimacy, CBD can lead to a more fulfilling and pleasurable sexual experience. Whether used topically, orally, or in infused lubricants, CBD provides a promising solution for women seeking to enhance their intimate well-being naturally.

Ira Ratner is a serial entrepreneur, cannabis expert, and founder of Franklin Wellness Partners, which offers a line of high-grade female-orientated CBD topical products designed to enhance sexual pleasure and offset both menstrual and menopause discomfort. Their products are all-natural and contain nano-emulsified CBD with no THC. See ad on page 7 >

The Brain Boost Blueprint: Synergistic Strategies for Sharper Thinking and Memory

Brain“What is just as important as what you eat? What you avoid eating. Research indicates that limiting processed foods, excess sugar, and inflammatory ingredients (dairy, gluten, saturated and trans fats, lectins) can be just as beneficial as focusing on nutrient-dense choices.”

fog, forgetfulness, and cognitive decline are becoming increasingly common, so taking proactive steps to support brain health is more critical than ever. The good news? There are research-backed, natural ways to nourish your brain and promote long-term cognitive function.

The Hidden Causes of Brain Drain

Brain aging may be inevitable, but the rate and extent of cognitive decline are not. Many accept that forgetfulness is simply part of getting older, but controllable factors play a significant role.

Here are some of the most overlooked culprits of brain fog, memory lapses, and cognitive decline:

• Blood sugar imbalances (long-term elevated blood sugar is linked to faster brain aging)

• Undiagnosed food sensitivities (may lead to inflammation that can affect cognitive function)

• Hormonal changes (particularly during menopause)

• Certain prescription medications (including some pain relievers, anxiety medications, sleep aids, and statins)

• Poor sleep quality (deep sleep is essential for memory consolidation and cognitive repair)

• Unmanaged chronic stress (which can shrink the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center).

If any of these may be factors in your aging process, consider that your daily choices could be impacting your neural vitality more than you realize.

The Best Foods for a Sharper Mind

Diet is a powerful tool for preserving cognitive function, but not all brain-boosting foods are created equal. Some of the most effective foods that nourish the brain include the following:

• Berries: High in antioxidants that protect brain cells from oxidative stress.

• Cruciferous vegetables: Help detoxify the body and support nerve function.

• Eggs: A natural source of choline, a precursor to acetylcholine, a critical neurotransmitter.

• Fatty fish: rovides DHA, a crucial omega-3 for memory and learning.

• Nuts (walnuts, almonds): Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, and polyphenols (powerful antioxidants).

Research indicates that limiting processed foods, excess sugar, and inflammatory ingredients (dairy, gluten, saturated and trans fats, lectins) can be as beneficial as focusing on nutrient-dense choices.

Beyond Diet: Supportive Dietary Supplements

While diet is foundational, often food alone is not enough. Nutritional deficiencies can quietly sabotage cognitive health, but research shows that certain supplements can fortify brain function, especially when used according to the recommendations of a supplements specialist.

These are some of the most evidence-based neuroprotective nutrients that deserve attention:

• Acetyl L-carnitine: This amino acid derivative helps with the function of mitochondria, the powerhouse of brain cells. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and transports fatty acids into cells, where they are converted to energy.

• Ashwagandha: Studies have shown that this Ayurvedic herb boosts memory, focus, reaction time, and the ability to perform tasks. It also prevents the breakdown of the critical neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

• Bacopa monnieri: A traditional Ayurvedic herb, Bacopa has been found able to support memory and mental performance over time.

• Lion’s mane mushroom: This appears to support the production of nerve growth factors involved in the growth, maintenance, proliferation, and survival of neurons.

• Alpha-GPC: A highly bioavailable form of choline, Alpha-GPC is often used to support cognitive performance and neurotransmitter activity. It has proven effective in reviving brain activity in some elderly patients.

• Active B-complex with B12: Well-absorbed B vitamins are essential for brain function, particularly when it comes to energy production and neurotransmitter support. Vitamin B12 is especially critical for neurological health. You can take these supplements individually or in blends, depending on your personal health needs. For noticeable long-term results, it is critical to choose high-quality, professional formulations.

Important Lifestyle Strategies

Lifestyle choices play a pivotal role in keeping cognitive function sharp. These are some simple but powerful strategies to integrate into daily life:

• Deep breathing and humming: Daily breathing exercises and humming calm the nervous system and support brain function.

• Hydration and organic herbal teas: Herbal teas that are relaxing and rich in antioxidants (tulsi and ashwagandha) offer a brain boost and promote higher water intake.

• Mindfulness and meditation: Studies indicate that meditation supports gray matter density in the brain, key for memory and focus.

• Movement: Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients crucial for cognition. Even simple movement, like walking or yoga, make a difference.

• Sleep hygiene: Deep, restorative sleep and napping (thirty minutes a day) allow the brain to process memories more effectively. By integrating nutrient-dense foods, targeted supplements, and mindful lifestyle habits, you can support your cognitive vitality at any stage of life.

I invite you to schedule a complimentary 20-Minute Wellness Assessment through my website. Together, we can create a brain wellness plan tailored to your needs.

The Other Side of Scarcity

Scarcity mindset SUCKS! It truly does.

“The truth is that a scarcity mindset isn’t just about not having money. It can still control us even when we do have it, making us afraid of ever going back to struggle. It’s something ingrained over years of conditioning, and it takes conscious effort to shift— even in times of abundance.”
—Kelly L. McCarthy

It’s that sneaky, persistent belief buried deep inside that surfaces whenever you want something more—whether it’s a goal, a dream, or something material. It whispers that you’re either unworthy of receiving it or that there will never be enough to go around. Most of us have felt this at some point, no matter how big or small the desire.

But what doesn’t get talked about enough is the other side of the scarcity mindset—the fear that shows up when you finally do have abundance. It’s the fear of losing it all after years of barely scraping by. After spending so long in survival mode, you finally reach a place of stability, yet that nagging voice in the back of your mind warns, “What if it all disappears?” The thought of going back to struggling is terrifying.

For my husband and me, this fear is deeply rooted in our past. We both went through personal bankruptcy, an experience that left a lasting imprint on how we view money, security, and success. When you’ve hit financial rock bottom, it changes you. Even when you rebuild, that old fear can creep in and whisper, “What if it happens again?”

We’ve worked hard to rewrite our money story, and for the first time, we’re on the other side, feeling financially secure and truly blessed. But even though we’ve come so far and are deeply grateful for everything we have, we still have moments of hesitation— especially when making larger purchases. Watching our bank account dip can trigger that old fear of scarcity, even though, in reality, we have always had enough. Even at our lowest—through bankruptcy, losing a house and a car and having literally $0 in the bank—we still had a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, and never truly went without.

Yet, that old fear resurfaced recently when we went to buy Bob a much-needed car. We had

started looking months before and found the perfect one—low miles, in great shape. We test-drove it, got excited, and told the dealer yes! But then, panic set in. What if this was a mistake? What if something unexpected happened? Were we being reckless?

The fear took over. We called the dealership, backed out, and lost out on a fantastic deal.

Buying a car should be exciting, but instead, it turned into an emotional rollercoaster. The push and pull between joy and fear made what should have been a celebration feel overwhelming.

Trust in the Journey— AND the Destination

And here’s the irony—I help others work through their scarcity mindset! I guide people in shifting their beliefs around money, abundance, and worthiness. Yet, even with all my knowledge and experience, it still sneaks up on me. It’s proof that healing from a scarcity mindset isn’t a one-anddone process—it’s an ongoing journey.

The truth is that a scarcity mindset isn’t just about not having money. It can still control us even when we do have it, making us afraid of ever going back to struggle. It’s something ingrained over years of conditioning, and it takes conscious effort to shift—even in times of abundance.

The good news? We sat down, talked it through, and faced it together. We went back to the dealership and found another great car for Bob—one that, while different from the first, was exactly what he needed. And then, as if the universe was waiting for us to trust, an unexpected check arrived— covering almost the entire cost of the car.

That moment was a powerful reminder to ask, believe, and be open to receiving. When you do, the floodgates open. Trust that there is always more than enough. You are meant to thrive, not just survive.

Weeds for Dinner? Foraging Is Your Friend!

There are two main types of homeowners out there: those who pay out the nose to manicure a perfect lawn full of perfect grass and those who just mow what they’ve got and hope for the best. And then there are the outliers, like me—the ones who look at all the weeds growing in what some people would laughingly call a “lawn” and wonder, “Huh… I wonder what that is?”

I like outliers. You’re my people. You’re the ones who have realized there’s something interesting about the plant world, something more than just the perfect gardens built with plants from a local nursery. The ones who see the wildflowers and the weeds and hear Mother Nature calling to them from the little patch of forest down the way.

The Earth has so many secrets that can help us and heal us. Are you ready to listen?

Be Weed-Weird

If you’re one of the weird ones, like me, who sees dandelions in your yard and gets excited rather than disgusted, keep reading. I can’t wait to introduce you to the world of wild foods and medicinal plants growing right beneath your feet in your own backyard!

In the words of a beloved herbalist I know, the worst weeds are our best friends. A weed is simply a plant growing in a place that you don’t want it to grow. Most of the weeds you pull out of your garden beds are edible, if not also medicinal. Food is medicine, and wild food is all around us!

Of course, you can read a plant identification book or watch some videos on YouTube. I post some of my adventures on YouTube too. But it can feel daunting when you’re out on your own. You second-guess yourself, and you’re not certain if you’re identifying something correctly. You don’t want to poison yourself or your family.

This fear is what stops most people from getting interested in foraging. It’s just too dangerous, they think. Well, I’m here to empower you! I will show you how you can be confident at foraging and finding simple herbal remedies in your own backyard.

Know Your Weeds

I have gardens here on my small farm and grow some plants on purpose, but a solid 25% or more of my regular diet, including what I pull out of my garden to eat most seasons of the year, is weeds. No, not that weed. I mean the things you get on your hands and knees and crawl around pulling out all summer long so you can have nice peas or tomatoes. A huge portion of those little plants are edible and perfectly delicious once you know how to cook with them.

Have you ever tried dandelion fritters? Hickory bark syrup? Lamb’s quarters quiche? What about stinging nettle pesto? Or acorn flour cookies?

When you start eating nature’s wild foods, your body remembers. It remembers the flavors, the sensations, and the feeling of having the right balance of vitamins and minerals. Wild plants have far greater nutritional content than most cultivated vegetables. In a society severely lacking in vitamins and minerals, they can be a powerful, life-saving tool for restoring health.

Let me show you how to find and create delicious meals and powerful herbal remedies and connect with your land in a way you thought was out of reach in this modern era.

I’m available for private foraging workshops, educational presentations, retreats, consultations, and other events. Explore my website, Blacksunfarmct.com, where you can read my educational blog, find my podcast appearances, and get on my schedule (April through early November is best).

I can’t wait to meet you!

Why Red Light Therapy Should Be Part of Your Treatment for Lyme Disease: An Interview

We“Red and nearinfrared light are the most beneficial and far-reaching wavelengths we can harness. When directed into the body, they stimulate the mitochondria…to produce more ATP, the energy source that fuels nearly every function in the body. This enhances cellular efficiency, speeds up repair, and improves regeneration. The result? Reduced inflammation, improved blood flow, and accelerated healing.”

Connecticut people know that Lyme disease is not to be taken lightly. After going through it and learning all I could about it, I decided to give an interview to share my experiences and knowledge, hoping it might help others understand the disease and learn more about treatment options.

What was it like getting your diagnosis?

Honestly, it came as a total shock! During my annual visit with my PCP, I hadn’t been feeling great. After describing my ailments—sore joints, sleeplessness, fatigue, headaches, tinnitus, increased anxiety, panic attacks, and an overall sense of dullness and depression—my doctor ordered some tests. At the time, I thought all those symptoms could be attributed to stress. I had just delivered my second daughter and was desperately trying to keep up with an impossible lifestyle: working full-time, scrambling to manage childcare, and maintaining a household. It’s a reality too many of us experience—and I repeat, an impossible one.

Did you know much about the disease at the time and what the diagnosis meant for your health?

When my doctor told me that Lyme is with you forever once you’re infected, I was bewildered. I had expected a round of medication to knock it out—voila, cured! I had a lot of questions, and I was surprised that my doctor seemed somewhat unprepared to answer them. I wanted to know how Lyme works, how it affects the body, what the symptoms are, and how I could avoid or alleviate them. And ultimately, how was this disease going to change my life? The response was casual: after taking antibiotics, I should be better and not experience symptoms. It sounded simple enough, but I was still confused about my longevity. If Lyme disease is a lifelong illness, shouldn’t I expect something from it in the future? I was only in my thirties. What about the next few decades?

Did you end up experiencing symptoms after your antibiotic treatment?

About five or six years later, right after opening my red light therapy studio, I saw a naturopathic doctor for the first time. As luck would have it, she was also a Lyme disease specialist. I was experiencing the same symptoms I had when I was first diagnosed, but now I had also developed brain fog and tremors, and my tinnitus had become unbearable. I felt like I was falling apart. She told me that, based on my health history and symptoms, I was likely having a Lyme flare-up— something I didn’t even know existed. And the bigger surprise? She said, “Lyme disease loves stress.” Excessive stress is a surefire way to trigger a flare-up. I had also recently recovered from COVID, which she said was another common culprit.

Was your naturopath able to help ease your symptoms?

After discussing my options, we decided antibiotics weren’t necessary at that time. What was necessary for my long-term health and managing Lyme symptoms was reducing my stress—not just mental stress, but physical stress, too. She advised me to shift to a cleaner diet, eat whole foods, and maintain proper hydration. I also added vitamin supplements to my daily routine. It’s what she recommended next that took me by surprise... She ironically suggested I do red light therapy.

That is ironic, given that your business centers around RLT. Did you know it could be beneficial in your situation?

The short answer is yes. But at the time, I was so focused on using RLT for my clients for weight loss treatments that I hadn’t paid much attention to its other health benefits, especially for myself. I was still putting my well-being last. It wasn’t until I felt on the edge of burnout that I finally decided I had to take action. Somehow, it hadn’t occurred to me that I already had the perfect

resource to help myself. So, with my doctor’s advice, I scheduled some treatment time for myself and immediately did some red light therapy.

What changes did you notice with the therapy, and how long did it take to make a difference for you?

I never get tired of talking about this! The benefits of RLT still continue to amaze me. Before I explain how red light therapy works and what it does, I often feel the need to say—half-jokingly—that what they’re about to hear may sound incredible or unrealistic, so please keep an open mind.

My results with RLT to relieve my Lyme symptoms were profound. As the owner of a business dedicated to RLT, I was anxiously hopeful it would work for my symptoms! But I also knew I had to remain unbiased. Proving that red light therapy improves quality of life for those with chronic disease meant I needed to know it worked—not just believe it. Through my research and seeing firsthand with our clients, I knew it helped with chronic pain and weight management, but we hadn’t treated autoimmune disorders or conditions like mine before. I went in with an open mind—no expectations, just curiosity.

After my first treatment, I slept well and woke up feeling refreshed, which was unusual for me. The next day, I focused on my knee and shoulder pain, adding extra treatment time to target the inflammation in my joints. I fell asleep during the session—it can be very relaxing. When I woke up, the pain was gone. The knee pain that had me shifting my weight all day? Vanished. My perpetually stiff and achy shoulders? Relaxed. By this point, I knew we were onto something.

I committed to a week of daily RLT treatments, fluctuating between twenty and forty minutes each. I started on a Tuesday feeling cranky, sore, and exhausted. By the following Monday, I felt unstoppable. I had incredible energy, no pain whatsoever, and felt revitalized. My family barely recognized me. I was coming home from the studio with boundless energy, tackling my to-do list with enthusiasm.

Now, if I’m feeling life pressures dragging me down, I use RLT early, before symptoms worsen. In minutes, I’m back to feeling like my usual self.

That really does sound incredible. How do you explain how RLT seemed to erase your symptoms so quickly?

Red light therapy may seem like science fiction until you understand the research behind it. While the concept seems new, the technology has been with us for decades. NASA played a key role in developing the technology we use today. Since the 1980s, they’ve explored red and near-infrared light for plant growth in space and astronaut recovery.

So, why light for healing? Humankind has used light energy from the sun since before time. The sun’s energy is essential for all life on earth. So,

exploring light energy for its health benefits seems natural. And being a natural element could be the reason why our bodies respond so positively to it. Red and near-infrared light are the most beneficial and far-reaching wavelengths we can harness. When directed into the body, they stimulate the mitochondria—the powerhouse of our cells—to produce more ATP, the energy source that fuels nearly every function in the body. This enhances cellular efficiency, speeds up repair, and improves regeneration, reducing inflammation, improving blood flow, and accelerating healing. Red light therapy is the perfect blend of holistic and modern medicine.

What advice do you have for anyone with Lyme disease or similar conditions who wants to try red light therapy?

First, RLT is not a cure for Lyme, and not everyone will find instant relief. Results can vary. When it comes to reducing symptoms from illness, it’s essential to seek treatment from a professional with expertise in medical-grade red light therapy. Many commercial facilities use low-grade equipment and do not have staff who are qualified to treat illness, so be sure to ask before booking. I also get questions about at-home RLT devices. While I encourage everyone to try RLT, home devices are largely unregulated and can often be ineffective. And remember that trying RLT once without results doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Sometimes it takes multiple treatments. To be certain of its efficacy, professional treatment is the best option.

Do other therapies work well with RLT?

Definitely. Because one way RLT helps us feel better is by stimulating the removal of toxins and impurities from the body, therapies such as dry brushing, infrared sauna, and manual lymphatic drainage can amplify its benefits following treatment. But even without these additional treatments, red light therapy is a powerful tool on its own— gentle, effective, and accessible to everyone. It’s easy to see why more people are turning to it.

Healing Eczema: A Whole-Body Approach with

Eastern and Western Medicine

Eczema is more than just a skin condition— it’s a sign of deeper imbalances in the body. In Western medicine, eczema is often linked to an overactive immune system, gut health issues, and inflammation. Many people with eczema also experience food sensitivities, acid reflux, IBS, asthma, and allergies—this connection is known as the atopic triad. Common treatments include steroid creams, antihistamines, and immune-suppressing medications, which may help manage symptoms but don’t address the root cause.

East Asian medicine (EAM) takes a whole-body approach, recognizing that eczema is not just about the skin—it’s a reflection of imbalances in the digestive system, lungs, liver, and stress response. Because EAM treats the mind, body, and spirit as one, it gets to the root cause, restoring balance. Imbalaces that can result in eczema flare-ups involve multuple systems:

• Gut microbiome imbalance (dysbiosis): Bloating, constipation, or food intolerances. Poor digestion can lead to inflammation, making the skin more reactive.

• Histamine intolerance and mast cell activation: Heightened mast cell activity leads to excess histamine, which worsens itching, rashes, and swelling.

• Lung and immune system: The lungs and skin are closely related in EAM, which is why many eczema patients also have asthma, frequent colds, seasonal allergies, and other allergies to substances such as dust or animals.

• Liver and stress: The liver plays a role in detoxification and helps regulate emotions. Stress, frustration, or hormonal imbalances can worsen flare-ups. Chronic stress also suppresses digestion, leading to gut issues that further drive inflammation.

• Toxic load and environmental sensitivities: Reaction to fragrances, chemicals, heavy metals, and synthetic fabrics due to an overactive immune response.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Rather than just calming symptoms, EAM works to rebalance the whole body with acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary changes, and nervous system regulation. Some common EAM herbal formulas for eczema include:

• Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin (five-ingredient decoction to eliminate toxins): Clears toxic heat to reduce inflammation for red, inflamed, or weeping eczema. Drains dampness to reduce oozing and dispels wind to stop itching. Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory support the immune system to prevent secondary infections in scratched or broken skin.

• Si Wu Tang (four-substance decoction): Nourishes blood to moisturize the skin, improves circulation, and reduces stagnation; supports the liver and hormonal balance. In EAM, blood deficiency can lead to dry, rough, cracked, or scaly eczema. When the blood is insufficient, the skin doesn’t receive enough nourishment, leading to chronic dryness and itchiness.

• Suan Zao Ren Tang: Helps with anxietyrelated flare-ups, improving sleep and reducing stress levels.

Integrating East and West for Better Results

By combining Western medicine’s understanding of the immune system with EAM’s ability to restore balance, we can create a more effective, long-term solution for eczema. Instead of just suppressing symptoms, this approach supports the body’s natural healing process—leading to clearer skin, better digestion, and improved overall well-being.

If you’re struggling with eczema and want a whole-body approach to healing, consider integrating Eastern medicine into your care plan.

Lyme Disease & The Immune System: The Connection & Path to Healing

“In Lyme disease and other VBDs, the immune system becomes impaired by the pathogens themselves. Borrelia bacteria, for example, can evade the immune system through biofilm formation and immune suppression, allowing the infection to persist in the body. This chronic infection leads to a prolonged inflammatory response, with cytokines promoting systemic inflammation and immune dysfunction.”

—Dr. Myriah Hinchey, ND

Lyme disease is one of the most common vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in the United States, with over 476,000 new cases diagnosed annually. However, recent data suggest that the true number of annual Lyme cases may exceed three million when accounting for underreporting in surveillance data. Lyme disease is often accompanied by other infections, commonly referred to as coinfections because they are contracted at the same time from the same bite. These infections, along with Lyme, can trigger or exacerbate conditions like pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder (PANDAS), both of which cause severe neuropsychiatric symptoms. Understanding the link between these diseases, the role of the immune system, and the impact of gut health is key to diagnosing and treating these complex conditions.

Lyme Disease and VBDs

Lyme disease, caused by multiple species of the Borrelia bacteria, is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. However, other vector-borne diseases frequently occur alongside Lyme disease. These coinfections have detrimental effects on the body and complicate the diagnosis and the treatment of Lyme disease.

VBDs can affect almost every organ system in the body, with symptoms ranging from fever, chills, night sweats, headaches, muscle weakness and aches, cardiac and GI symptoms, anxiety, depression, brain fog, and fatigue to more severe neurological manifestations, such as encephalitis and Lyme neuroborreliosis. The key challenge in treating Lyme disease and other VBDs is that the immune system’s ability to fight these infections can become impaired, leading to peristent chronic illness.

PANS/PANDAS

PANS

and PANDAS are autoimmune disorders where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own brain tissue, leading to abrupt changes in behavior, personality, and movement. Both conditions are triggered by infections, and Lyme disease and other VBDs, such as Bartonella and Mycoplasma, are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to PANS/PANDAS.

PANS refers to a broad spectrum of infections or factors that can trigger neuropsychiatric symptoms, including an abrupt onset of OCD, anxiety, panic, separation anxiety, extreme fear, restricted eating, deterioration of handwriting, regression in school performance, motor tics, and bedwetting. PANDAS specifically refers to neuropsychiatric symptoms triggered by Streptococcus infections, although there is typically additional underlying immune dysfunction. When an infection like Borrelia or Bartonella enters the body, it can initiate a dysregulated immune response that not only targets the pathogen but also the brain, leading to neuroinflammation. This inflammation is believed to affect areas of the brain involved in behavior and movement, including the basal ganglia, which plays a significant role in motor control and emotional regulation.

VBDs and PANS/PANDAS

The link between Lyme disease, other vector-borne diseases, and PANS/PANDAS lies in immune system dysfunction. Infections like Borrelia (Lyme), Bartonella, Babesia, and Mycoplasma can cause an overactive immune response, leading to chronic inflammation and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The immune system becomes dysregulated, and the body’s response to infections is altered, causing an ongoing cycle of inflammation that can affect both the body and the brain.

In PANS and PANDAS, the immune system produces autoantibodies that target the brain, particularly the basal ganglia, leading to the neuropsychiatric symptoms observed in these conditions. Lyme and PANS/PANDAS share the feature of immune system dysregulation, where the immune system’s response to infection causes more harm than good, affecting both the body and the brain.

Immune System Basics: The Body’s Defense Mechanism

The immune system is made up of two main branches: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The innate immune system provides the body’s first line of defense, recognizing general patterns of pathogens and responding quickly. It includes physical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes, as well as immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils that engulf and destroy pathogens.

The adaptive immune system is slower to respond but provides a more targeted defense. It involves lymphocytes, including T cells and B cells, which recognize specific pathogens and remember them, providing stronger and faster responses upon re-exposure. Cytokines are crucial for coordinating the immune response by promoting inflammation and immune cell activation. When the immune system becomes dysregulated, it can lead to chronic inflammation. This is seen in both Lyme disease and PANS/PANDAS, where the immune system becomes overactive, causing harm to the body and brain.

Immune System Dysregulation in PANS/PANDAS, Lyme, and VBDs

In PANS and PANDAS, immune system dysfunction is central to the pathogenesis of the disease. Both conditions are characterized by an abrupt onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including OCD, anxiety, mood swings, and cognitive impairment. The immune system produces autoantibodies in response to infections. These antibodies mistakenly target the brain, leading to neuroinflammation.

This autoimmune response leads to the activation of proinflammatory cytokines, which further exacerbate neuroinflammation and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The underlying cause of immune dysregulation in PANS/PANDAS can be triggered by infections like Streptococcus, Borrelia, and other VBDs. By understanding the immune system’s role in these conditions, it’s clear that treating the infection while restoring immune balance is key to recovery.

In Lyme disease and other VBDs, the immune system becomes impaired by the pathogens themselves. These infections can disrupt the immune system’s ability to mount an effective defense, leading to persistent symptoms that affect the body and the brain. The Problem: Killing the Infection While Restoring Immunocompetence

The key challenge in treating Lyme disease, VBDs, and PANS/PANDAS is not just eradicating the infection but also restoring immune competence. Traditional antibiotic treatments can help kill the pathogens but may not fully address the underlying immune dysregulation. Additionally, long-term use of antibiotics can contribute to dysbiosis, further disrupting the immune system.

Restoring immune competence requires a multifaceted approach that includes herbal treatments to modulate immune responses, reduce inflammation, and support gut health. Herbal remedies such as Japanese knotweed, cat’s claw, and astragalus have shown promise in supporting the immune system and promoting healing in individuals with Lyme disease and PANS/PANDAS. These herbs help regulate cytokine production, reduce inflammation, and support overall immune function.

Resolving Infections with Herbals

Herbal medicine plays a crucial role in resolving multiple infections simultaneously. Plants like Cryptolepis, Houttuynia cordata, and Sida acuta are known for their antimicrobial properties and can help target pathogens. These herbs also support immune modulation, helping to restore balance to the immune system while addressing chronic infections. By combining herbal treatments with dietary and lifestyle changes, individuals with Lyme disease, VBDs, and PANS/PANDAS can support their body’s natural healing process, reduce inflammation, and restore immune function.

Understanding the role of the immune system, the gut, and herbal medicine is crucial for successfully treating Lyme disease, VBDs, and PANS/ PANDAS. By addressing infections, reducing inflammation, and restoring immune competence, individuals can regain their health and alleviate the long-term effects of these complex diseases.

Diet’s Role in the Treatment of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdoferi bacterium that resides in a tick bite. Antibiotics are the main treatment for Lyme disease; however, nutrition can play a key role in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

Lyme disease can trigger chronic inflammation in the body. When the body is inflamed, it can lead to a variety of symptoms and complications. Reducing the inflammation associated with Lyme disease is a top priority. One of the most effective approaches to dealing with Lyme disease is the Mediterranean diet. Known for its emphasis on whole foods, healthy fats, and plant-based ingredients, it has been shown to reduce inflammation and improve overall health.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits and vegetables that provide an abundance of vitamins C and E. These vitamins play a major role in decreasing inflammation. Vitamin C helps the immune system function properly and stay healthy, as well as protects the body from free radicals that cause inflammation. Foods rich in vitamin C include red peppers, citrus fruits, broccoli, and tomatoes. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant and, therefore, also helps reduce inflammation in the body. It has been widely recommended to supplement with vitamin E if living with chronic inflammation conditions. Vitamin E food products include but are not limited to sunflower seeds, almonds, and hazelnuts.

Omega-3 fatty acids, another key part of the Mediterranean diet, are known to help reduce inflammation. Salmon, walnuts, chia seeds, soybeans, and many more foods can help reduce the production of harmful substances during the body’s response to inflammation and, because of that, reduce the side effects of chronic inflammation. The inclusion of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet will not only help reduce inflammation but also help reduce your likelihood of developing additional diseases.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes whole foods that provide B vitamins, blood sugar regulation, and fiber—all areas that can be disrupted by Lyme disease.

Other Helpful Foods

The Mediterranean diet is a healing powerhouse, but there are additional anti-inflammatory foods that can help treat the side effects of Lyme disease. For joint pain with Lyme disease, turmeric, a spice, when mixed with healthy fats and black pepper, can help support joint health and reduce inflammation, making it a wonderful addition to the diet of someone with Lyme disease. Green tea and ginger are also anti-inflammatory favorites. An often-overlooked aspect of nutrition with Lyme disease is gut health. Antibiotics commonly prescribed for treatment can disrupt gut bacteria, leading to digestive issues and a weakened immune system. This is where probiotics play a vital role. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that help repair and restore the gut microbiome. While there are probiotics supplements, which can be a low-stress, simple addition to your daily routine, there are also foods known to naturally contain probiotics. Fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, and kombucha are excellent sources of probiotics. It is also beneficial to include prebiotic foods or supplements to feed the probiotic properties. Foods rich in prebiotics include garlic, asparagus, and bananas. Whether it is as simple as adding a probiotic supplement into your daily routine or making healthy and beneficial food choices, probiotics are essential for your overall well-being in relation to Lyme disease.

A healthy diet is important for managing Lyme disease. Together, the dietary recommendations listed above provide a different approach to supporting the body’s fight against Lyme disease. When dealing with different diseases such as Lyme, it is important to consult with a registered dietitian to ensure you’re making healthy dietary changes.

“An oftenoverlooked aspect of nutrition with Lyme disease is gut health. Antibiotics commonly prescribed for treatment can disrupt gut bacteria, leading to digestive issues and a weakened immune system. This is where probiotics play a vital role.”

“Tick-borne diseases are no longer rare or seasonal. Warmer winters, suburban expansion, and growing deer populations have extended tick season and habitat, making these infections a yearround concern— even in areas where they were once uncommon.”

—Dr. Pamela M. Cipriano, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC

Tick-Borne Diseases Are

on the Rise—Here’s Why You Need an ILADS Provider

If you’ve been hearing more about Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections lately, there’s good reason. Across the U.S.—especially in the Northeast—cases are on the rise. The CDC estimates over 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year, a number that has more than doubled over the past two decades. And that number is likely underestimated due to inaccurate testing.

It’s not just Lyme. Infections like babesiosis, bartonellosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan virus are also increasing—yet many people remain misdiagnosed or undertreated.

A Growing Problem—And Not Just Lyme

While Lyme remains the most well-known, today’s ticks often carry and transmit multiple pathogens in a single bite. Patients may suffer from two, three, or more simultaneous infections, complicating diagnosis and treatment.

Babesia, a malaria-like parasite, causes fatigue, night sweats, and shortness of breath. Bartonellosis can lead to neurological and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or even hallucinations. Anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis can cause fevers, low white blood cell counts, and liver issues. Rare viruses like Powassan may lead to life-threatening encephalitis.

Tick-borne diseases are no longer rare or seasonal. Warmer winters, suburban expansion, and growing deer populations have extended tick season and habitat, making these infections a yearround concern—even in areas where they were once uncommon.

The Problem with the Standard Approach

Many patients with early Lyme symptoms—like fever, body aches, or rash—are misdiagnosed with flu, fibromyalgia, or anxiety. Others are dismissed when they test negative using the standard two-tier testing method, which is unreliable in early stages and doesn’t detect co-infections. Worse still, those with chronic symptoms after brief antibiotic treatment are often told, “It’s all in your head.” Instead of further evaluation, they’re referred to psychiatrists or pain clinics. This one-size-fits-all approach fails complex, chronic, and late-stage cases—and that’s where ILADS-trained providers come in.

Why ILADS?

The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) is the leading organization focused on the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and other tick-borne infections. ILADS-trained providers take a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that accounts for the complexity of these illnesses.

Unlike conventional protocols, ILADS guidelines support:

• clinical diagnosis over rigid testing algorithms

• recognition and treatment of coinfections

• longer or combination antibiotic regimens when needed

• customized treatment plans based on individual response

• use of adjunct therapies like herbal antimicrobials, detox support, and immune modulation

ILADS providers understand that chronic tickborne illness isn’t a “thirty-day fix.” It requires time, expertise, and a willingness to truly listen to patients.

A Better Path to Healing

Many of my patients come to me after years of misdiagnosis or dismissal. Some have been told they have MS, lupus, chronic fatigue, or psychiatric disorders—when, in fact, they were dealing with tick-borne infections. Others are told their labs are normal despite debilitating fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain.

When tested through specialized labs and treated using an ILADS-informed approach, these patients often begin to heal. Their symptoms ease. They regain function. They get their lives back.

This isn’t alternative medicine—it’s informed, personalized care that respects the complexity of these diseases and the resilience of the human body.

What You Can Do

If you spend time outdoors—gardening, hiking, walking your dog—you are at risk. To protect yourself and your family:

• Wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas.

• Use essential oil-based tick repellents like Nantucket Spider.

• Consider clothing treated by Insect Shield, which kills ticks on contact.

• Remove ticks promptly using fine-tipped tweezers.

• Save the tick for testing and take photos. If bitten, call your provider immediately and request thirty days of doxycycline—it covers most tick-borne infections and is widely used long-term for acne.

As tick-borne illnesses grow in complexity and reach, our approach to care must evolve. ILADS providers lead this movement—offering patients what they need most: validation, evidence-based care, and hope.

The Science of Skincare

“Work with your esthetician to achieve a skincare routine that’s right for you. They will help you discover your type of skin, discuss your skin concerns, and create an individualized plan to help you attain your goals.”

—Cheryl V.

Your skin is meant to last a lifetime. To help keep your skin looking firm and youthful, know your skin type and start a meaningful dialogue with your esthetician. Frequent facials offer an array of skincare benefits, from firming, deep cleansing, and eliminating pore-clogging impurities to boosting hydration, evening out discoloration like dark spots, and addressing blemish-prone skin.

Facials paired with targeted home-care products can deliver impressive results. Getting facials regularly also helps your at-home skin care products absorb, perform, and radiate your greatest glow.

How Often Should I Get a Facial?

Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Facial frequency is typically about every four weeks. It’s different for everyone, so consulting with your esthetician is key. What works well for someone else might not be for you. Work with your esthetician to achieve a skincare routine that’s right for you. They will help you discover your type of skin, discuss your skin concerns, and create an individualized plan to help you attain your goals.

As your skin develops from routine facials and home care, your goals will change, too. Your esthetician can help ensure you’re always using the correct products in the correct order to achieve the results you’re looking for.

Skincare Goals

If you get facials due to oily or acne-prone skin, discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles, or clogged pores, your esthetician may want to schedule your sessions more often. Your esthetician will recommend a scheduled skincare routine. If you

benefit from chemical peels or enhancements, these services are normally recommended by an esthetician in a series and may mean more frequent appointments.

The Science of Facials

Your skin regenerates every twenty-seven days, so you’ll want to allow proper time for new skin cells to generate and make their way to the surface. Receiving skin care services regularly may help accelerate the regeneration process.

DIY vs. Professional Facials

Your esthetician may also recommend advanced skincare services like a microderm infusion or a Chemical Peel. Remember, a facial can leave you feeling completely relaxed as your skin is addressed and indulged.

Unmasking Autoimmune Diseases: How Thermography Can Reveal Hidden Inflammation

A“One of the greatest obstacles for individuals with autoimmune diseases is obtaining an accurate and timely diagnosis. Many autoimmune conditions mimic other illnesses, leading to delays in treatment and long periods of uncertainty…. Because conventional diagnostic methods often miss early-stage autoimmune activity, incorporating thermography into routine health assessments can provide an additional layer of insight.”

—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

utoimmune diseases often develop silently, and many people struggle for years with unexplained discomfort, seeking answers, while traditional tests may not fully capture the underlying issues. Thermography is emerging as a valuable, noninvasive tool that can help monitor inflammation and provide deeper insights into the body’s immune activity.

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system, designed to protect the body from harmful invaders, mistakenly identifies healthy cells as threats and launches an attack against them. This results in chronic inflammation that can damage tissues, organs, and entire systems over time. They are more common in women, they also significantly impact men—sometimes with more aggressive symptoms or different disease presentations.

There are over one hundred known autoimmune diseases, and while each affects different parts of the body, they share a common underlying issue: dysregulated immune function. Symptoms often overlap with other conditions, making autoimmune diseases challenging to diagnose. Common symptoms include chronic pain and inflammation, persistent fatigue, joint stiffness or swelling, skin rashes or irritation, digestive disturbances, muscle weakness, brain fog, and memory issues.

Common autoimmune dieases include:

• Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): A chronic inflammatory disease that affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness; more common in women, but men with RA often experience more severe joint destruction.

• Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus—SLE): A systemic disease that can impact the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and brain. Men with lupus often suffer from more severe organ damage compared to women.

• Multiple sclerosis (MS): A nervous system disease in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves (myelin). MS progresses more aggressively in men, leading to faster disability rates.

• Psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis: Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition causing red, scaly patches, while psoriatic arthritis causes joint pain and stiffness. They affect men and women equally, though men tend to have more joint damage.

• Hashimoto’s thyroiditis/Graves’ disease: Hashimoto’s causes underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while Graves’ leads to overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). It is more frequently diagnosed in women but also impacts men, affecting metabolism, energy levels, and overall well-being.

• Type 1 diabetes: Results from the immune system attacking insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Unlike many autoimmune diseases, type 1 diabetes affects men and women equally.

• Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—Crohn’s/ ulcerative colitis: Chronic conditions affecting the digestive tract, leading to severe inflammation, pain, and malabsorption. Symptoms may present differently between men and women. These diseases impact different organs but all share a common thread: chronic inflammation. Early detection is key to slowing disease progression and improving quality of life.

How Thermography Helps Monitor

Autoimmune Health

Thermography is a radiation-free, noninvasive infrared imaging tool that detects heat patterns and blood flow changes in the body. Since inflammation produces increased heat, thermography may visualize immune activity before significant tissue damage occurs.

Benefits of thermography for autoimmune disease monitoring include the following:

• Early detection of inflammatory activity: Identifies heat patterns associated with inflammation before symptoms become severe and can help detect early changes in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, MS, Crohn’s, and more.

• Safe, noninvasive, and radiation-free: Unlike X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs, thermography does

not expose the body to harmful radiation; ideal for long-term monitoring of chronic conditions.

• Tracks circulatory and nervous system dysfunction: Reveals blood flow abnormalities that are seen in Raynaud’s, MS, and diabetic neuropathy. It can detect nerve inflammation, a key factor in autoimmune nerve disorders.

• Helps guide further testing: If thermography detects abnormal heat patterns, individuals can follow up with blood tests, MRIs, or ultrasounds to pinpoint the underlying cause.

•Monitors disease progression and treatment effectiveness: Provides visual tracking of inflammation over time, helping patients assess how medications, diet, and lifestyle changes are affecting their condition.

By integrating thermography into routine health assessments, those with autoimmune diseases can gain a more complete picture of their immune function and overall health.

Integrating Thermography into Your Autoimmune Health Plan

While thermography does not replace standard diagnostic tests, it offers a powerful complementary tool for individuals dealing with autoimmune disorders. By visualizing inflammation and immune system activity, thermography empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward managing their health.

Those who should consider thermography include individuals with undiagnosed chronic pain, fatigue, or inflammation, those with an existing autoimmune diagnosis looking for safe, long-term monitoring, and people at high risk for autoimmune diseases due to family history or symptoms.

While traditional medicine focuses on diagnosing late-stage autoimmune disease, thermography provides a functional, early-stage view of inflammation—helping individuals and healthcare providers make more informed decisions about treatment and management.

If you are dealing with chronic symptoms or managing an autoimmune condition, consider incorporating thermography into your health routine. Early detection and proactive monitoring can make all the difference in maintaining long-term wellness.

The Secrets to Vector-Borne Disease Resolution

T“After having used a variety of treatment strategies for many years while comparing treatment outcomes, I have found herbal antimicrobial therapy to be a far superior treatment for chronic vectorborne diseases over traditional pharmaceutical antibiotics.”

—Dr. Zach Moran, ND

he debate of chronic vector-borne diseases (Lyme disease and coinfections) continues to this day. Surprisingly, some of the most recognized leaders in the infectious disease community still argue over the existence of chronic vector-borne diseases. However, I am here to tell you the argument should not be over the existence but the widespread prevalence and severity of chronic vector-borne diseases. The Western medical system has focused its testing and treatments around acute Lyme disease, which has generally proved effective if the patient recognizes a bite or rash early. However, if the disease becomes chronic, evaluation and treatment strategies in the Western medical system are inadequate and disappointing, to say the least.

Chronic vector-borne diseases are one of the most challenging diagnoses to confirm due to the pathogen’s variability and flexibility to change structure and location. Due to our poor screening efforts and inaccurate diagnostics used, practitioners are often unable to give patients clarity on the likelihood of an active infection. Even if a vector-borne disease can be identified, the treatment process can be even more challenging and complicated due to the unique capabilities of adaptation, growth, and the variety of organ systems a vector-borne disease can infect. But the good news is that if a comprehensive treatment approach is applied, most, if not all, patients can resolve the infection regardless of the duration and severity of the illness.

Treating Chronic Vector-Borne Diseases

I have found significant success in treating chronic vector-borne diseases for two major reasons. First, it is imperative to treat and resolve all acute inflammatory conditions prior to treating vectorborne diseases like SIBO, viral infections, and

toxicity exposure. I have found that if the immune system is distracted, depleted, or altered by additional inflammatory conditions, then it will not devote a full response against the vector-borne infection. The immune system will not function as efficiently with multiple inflammatory conditions, and the patient is much more likely to have adverse reactions to any antibiotic or antimicrobial treatments used.

The second reason I have had significant success with treating vector-borne disease is due to the consistent use of enzymatic therapy to treat biofilm formation. This may be the single most important variable missed when treating acute versus chronic vector-borne diseases. After a few short months, many of the microbes of vector-borne diseases have burrowed deep into connective tissue and formed a biofilm that encapsulates the pathogen, protecting it against antibiotic therapy. Without treating the biofilm and reducing that encapsulation, neither antibiotics nor alternative therapies will be effective for the full resolution of the infection.

Herbal Therapy

Left untreated or not properly treated, Lyme disease and other vector-borne diseases can lead to chronic illness and immune system dysfunction, where the immune system becomes overactive, leading to chronic inflammation and persistent symptoms.

Herbal therapy can be very effective in treating multiple infections. Plants and herbs known for their antimicrobial properties can also support the immune system, helping restore balance to the immune system while addressing chronic infections. After having used a variety of treatment strategies for many years while comparing treatment outcomes, I have found herbal antimicrobial therapy to be a far superior treatment for chronic vector-borne

diseases over traditional pharmaceutical antibiotics. The research agrees that herbal treatments are much more synergistic with the immune response. They promote anti-inflammatory effects, penetrate deeper into the tissues where chronic disease manifests, and produce similar, if not greater, efficacy to treatment outcomes. Not to mention they are generally better tolerated by the patient.

Lastly, the gastrointestinal microbiome is less disturbed. Pharmaceutical antibiotics can be helpful in acute flares when the patient is in significant distress or with a recent-onset infection, but I do not recommend them for longer than a few weeks at a time. Treatment for chronic vector-borne diseases can take months to effectively resolve, and long-term pharmaceutical antibiotic therapies can cause significant distress.

Supportive Care

Often overlooked but just as important as “killing” the infection is supportive care therapies used to improve outcomes and reduce symptoms of vector-borne diseases. Boosting and regulating the immune response, improving lymphatic detoxification, as well as rebuilding the damaged tissue are all necessary components of treatment to regain optimal health and function. If you are a patient dealing with symptoms consistent with chronic vector-borne diseases, the first step is an evaluation outside of conventional testing, using specialty labs and an educated provider within the vector-borne diseases community. Once you have confirmation of the infection, using a multifactorial and comprehensive therapy over multiple months can and often does result in complete resolution of symptoms.

Celebrating the Women Who Shape Us

As“We

are grounded by those who have successfully navigated the world before us, and in turn, we become the influencers of those who follow in our footsteps. Celebrate these powerful connections and be grateful for the opportunity to listen and learn.”

—Sharon

Sklar BFA, LMT, CAR

we celebrate Mother’s Day, it is important to remember those women who have influenced us in our lives. I am moved by the contributions of so many powerful women I have known who have inspired me in their own way. Some of them I have lost, some I never met, and one I know as Mom! This is a look at a few of those women who have helped me understand life, my world, and my life’s work.

Women of Inspiration

I first want to acknowledge Dr. Ida Rolf, a pioneer in the Body-Mind Movement, which started in the 1970s. Dr. Rolf was ahead of her time, with PhDs in biochemistry and human physiology in the 1920s. She looked for help with an issue one of her young sons was having and couldn’t find what he needed. That’s when she realized that direct manipulation of the connective tissue would shift the plasticity of the body. That led her to discover the basis for The Rolf Method of Structural Integration. Her students called it Rolfing®, and the name stuck.

Through her discoveries, Dr. Rolf created the body of work we now know as the ten-session Rolfing series, which has transformed the lives of people (including me!) since the 1960s and has trained students since 1971 at The Dr. Ida Rolf Institute® in Boulder, Colorado and various associated schools across the globe.

A year out of college, I heard about this work, how it organized and integrated the body. I knew deep in my soul I had to experience it. I found the only Rolfer in Connecticut and got Rolfed. In my second session, in 1977, I knew I had found the work I would do for the rest of my life. I did my prerequisite work and was certified in therapeutic massage, took a college course in kinesiology and more anatomy, wrote six research papers, and was accepted after two days of interviews at The Rolf Institute. I have been a Certified Rolfer since 1981,

did my Advanced Training in 1988, and Rolf Movement Training in 1985. I love my work with people, witnessing them free up, feel better, and have more ability to live without pain. I am truly inspired by Dr. Rolf’s work and have devoted my life to it.

Those We’ve Lost

I have been greatly influenced by two women I recently lost. One, Mary Cahill, was a neighbor for twenty years. She died this December at almost one hundred and two. Her mind was still sharp until the end when she died in her sleep from a stroke. Mary was outspoken, stood her ground, and forwarded town policies that represented our community. She was a force. She had enemies, she had friends, and she had a devoted group of neighbors who paraded in and out of her home, looking after her and keeping her up on events so she felt needed. Mary could expect a Sunday morning omelet from me even when she had a caretaker for the last eighteen months of her life. Mary was a straight shooter, expert manipulator, stubborn, and my very dear friend. I miss her.

In February I also recently lost a dear friend who was my best Rolfing® buddy. I met Dorothy Hunter when I needed to receive eight movement sessions to complete my Rolfing® application. Dorothy had decided to become a Rolfer and showed up for her first class while I was there. Our friendship was immediately formed, and we went on to do our final phase of the Rolfing® Training together, as well as our Advanced Training several years later.

We traveled the globe, taking classes and forging a friendship that spanned four decades. Through Dorothy, I depended on my spirit of adventure and travel, with which I recently reconnected on a trip to Paris and Porto, Portugal. I shook off the COVID-19, home-based life and embraced the world again. I miss Dorothy and honor her in my travels.

And, of Course, Mom

I have been so inspired by my mother, Doris Oberstein. I was raised by my parents to be an independent thinker, giving me the basis for my life. At sixteen, I took myself to college interviews and portfolio reviews in Boston and New York because my mom said I should. She was a devoted teacher in Hartford Public Schools, and my dad was a stockbroker. They were busy professionals, and they knew I was capable—and so I was! I was taught I could do anything I set my mind to do.

At ninety-six years old, my mom does chair aerobics twice a week, plays bridge at least four times a week, lives on her own, drives, has written two books and several plays, and only stopped playing tennis six years ago. She inspires me to live a full life, not letting anything stop me.

I treasure my mom and feel so blessed to have her still—for daily phone calls, words of encouragement, and ideas to bounce off her because I value her perspective and opinion. She is my rock, my best friend.

Remember to Celebrate Your Inspirational Women

On this Mother’s Day (and every day!), please take time to show your love for the women in your life who helped you along the way and who have enlightened you with their presence and their knowledge. We learn from each other and are in no way alone in life.

Choose your mentors, seek advice from elders, and broaden your perspective by learning from others’ experiences. We are grounded by those who have successfully navigated the world before us, and in turn, we become the influencers of those who follow in our footsteps. Celebrate these powerful connections and be grateful for the opportunity to listen and learn. Get out there and know that someone has your back! We are blessed to have sisterhood.

Why Here, Why Now

“In holistic manual therapy practice, we recognize that the body and mind are not separate and that fear, stress, and anger make us more rigid, both in our thinking and in our joints. By creating a space where clients can slow down and come into the present moment, we open the door to recognizing and relinquishing self-defeating responses to the influences in our lives.”

Mindfulness

is at the core of the wellness work I do with clients and in my personal journey. It informs massage therapy and wellness coaching and provides the foundation for all our work together. What is mindfulness? Simply, it is the process of coming fully into the present moment. Why do we seek it? What value does it bring to our lives and health?

The Practice of Mindfulness Shifts Our Experience of Time

We live in a world of pasts and futures. When we try to walk through life while looking over our shoulders, we trip over the present. The same happens when we focus too much on the horizon ahead! We are distracted by anticipating and striving and urgency and our life becomes an infinite scroll of to-do list, checking off one task after another. Our experience of time is collapsed and accelerated as we jump to The Next Thing and we miss the experience of the earth under our feet with every step on the way.

As we bring our consciousness more fully into the present, time expands and swells. We experience more Now in our now. This doesn’t mean we forget where we’ve come from; instead of lingering in memories, we feel their legacy as it lives in us now. This also doesn’t mean that we become aimless; we build and hold awareness of our orientation, which way we’re headed…while we consciously connect with how we’re moving toward the life we want. With this sort of presence in attention, our every action becomes more effective. We see more clearly where we are and what our next step will be, and we watch life play in bullet time (think The Matrix), with space to consider our choices and time to witness each moment more fully.

The Practice of Mindfulness Allows Us to Create Change That Persists

As our experience of the present moment expands, we also unlock the ability to access intentional plasticity. We know the word “plasticity” from the popular concept of “neuroplasticity” (that the brain and its function can be altered). Recognize, though, that plasticity is relevant both in mind and body. In response to any impulse, influence, or impact, there are four potential responses by our body/mind: rigid, elastic, plastic, and rupture. A rigid response leaves us completely unchanged, even in the moment of impact. An elastic response accepts the outside influence and is temporarily altered, before returning to its original shape, unchanged. A plastic response allows the influence to produce change without returning to the original shape. A rupture occurs when something is irretrievably broken. If you imagine being struck by a car, an elastic response sounds great, but if you’re being struck by an intelligent idea, maybe you want more plasticity. My goal is to help clients cultivate the ability to shift into the mode that will best serve them through the application of mindfulness; we develop rigid resistance where we don’t want to fold, elastic resilience when we need to be accommodating, we carefully navigate rupture when something’s gotta give, and we access useful plasticity in a safe environment when we want to create lasting, healthy change.

What Does a Mindfulness-Based Practice Look Like?

We are intricate living systems, and for our own well-being, we must be able to take the jostling that life gives us and find some balance between preserving our integrity and letting life’s

influences change us for the better. In holistic manual therapy practice, we recognize that the body and mind are not separate and that fear, stress, and anger make us more rigid, both in our thinking and in our joints. By creating a space where clients can slow down and come into the present moment, we open the door to recognizing and relinquishing self-defeating responses to the influences in our lives. Time expands, our breath goes deeper, and our tensions and aches and struggles ease and flow away.

Without being full of thought, we shift entirely into the present and become fully at home in our own bodies. This is the exquisite experience and deep benefit of skillful touch.

In the coaching environment, we cultivate the ability to intentionally shift into presence as the process of accessing the parts of ourselves we want to change. As we expand the moment, we witness how we relate to and narrate our stories. We connect with our core values to understand how we have been serving or betraying ourselves. We begin to intentionally deconstruct the patterns we’ve been stuck in from a place of willingness and support. We start building new capacity within ourselves for the life we want to live. Though this process is unique to each person, we access it through this common thread: Be Here Now. This process allows the client to create skills that they can carry forward into their lives, even after our work together is complete, which they can continue to adapt and employ even as their aims in life shift.

Whatever form our work together takes, the gift we cultivate for ourselves in this practice of mindfulness is the ability to feel at home in our lives, not because the world outside is as we wish it were, but because we understand and embrace our own agency, and can accept what is beyond us. It is a great privilege to get to facilitate this process for those who work with me.

Spring Renewal with Essential Oils

S“Lemon, grapefruit, and sweet orange combat spring’s sluggishness and enhance mood. Lemon helps to detoxify, uplift, and cleanse. Grapefruit is excellent for stimulating lymphatic flow and boosting metabolism. Sweet orange is just right for energizing and mood-enhancing.”

pring is about renewal, growth, and clearing out the stagnation of winter. It is a time to regain balance with movement and diet so we don’t develop sluggishness, congestion, allergies, and excess mucus in the body. It is a time to drink warm herbal teas, eat lighter foods, and shake off winter lethargy with invigorating herbs and oils.

As an aromatherapist, I rotate oils each season to best support the body. I’m excited to share with you some of the oils I use as we shift into spring.

• Warming and stimulating oils: Ginger, black pepper, clove, and cardamom oils help to counteract the season’s sluggish nature.

• Decongesting and respiratory oils: Eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary help clear excess mucus and reduce seasonal allergies.

• Uplifting and energizing oils: Lemon, grapefruit, and sweet orange combat spring’s sluggishness and enhance mood.

• Detoxifying and circulatory oils: Juniper berries, cypress, and turmeric oils support the body’s natural detox process.

• Bug bites and stings: Lavender, tea tree, peppermint, and chamomile are perfect for reducing pain and swelling and preventing infection.

You can apply these essential oils in several ways, depending on your intention—whether you’re looking to energize, detox, relieve congestion, or achieve balance. Here are the best methods.

1. Aromatic Application (Diffusion and Inhalation)

• Diffuser: Add 5–7 drops of your chosen oil to a diffuser to purify the air, uplift mood, or clear congestion.

• Steam inhalation: Add 2–3 drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, or rosemary to a bowl of hot water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale deeply for 5–10 minutes to relieve allergies and congestion.

• Direct inhalation: To boost energy, place a drop of oil ginger, black pepper, or citrus oil on your palms, rub them together, cup over your nose, and take deep breaths.

2. Topical Application (Massage and Skin Absorption)

• Balancing massage: Use juniper berry, black pepper, or cypress with sesame oil and massage vigorously to stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow.

• Detox massage: Blend grapefruit, ginger, or rosemary with coconut or almond oil and massage over the abdomen and lymphatic areas to support detox.

• Sinus relief: Use a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemon (diluted) to the chest, temples, or behind the ears to relieve congestion.

3. Bath Therapy

Mix 5–10 drops of essential oil with Epsom salts, then add to warm bath water.

• Detox: Use juniper berry, cypress, or grapefruit.

• Congestion relief: Use eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea tree.

4. Self-Massage

Use warm sesame or almond oil with black pepper, cardamom, or turmeric for a morning self-massage to boost circulation and remove stagnation. Let the oil absorb for 15–30 minutes before showering.

Navigating Lyme and Autoimmune Conditions: A Holistic Approach at Imagine Float

“Our modern world is relentless. We are bombarded with information, constantly connected, and often mentally exhausted before the day is even over. Giving the brain the opportunity to rest is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for longevity.”
—MIchele Beaule

Living with Lyme disease or an autoimmune condition can feel like solving an impossible puzzle—one where fatigue, pain, and brain fog shift the pieces daily. At Imagine Float, we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many on this journey, and while we are not medical professionals, we’ve seen how a whole-person approach to wellness can provide meaningful relief.

Understanding the Challenge

Lyme disease, especially when persistent, and autoimmune disorders—like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Hashimoto’s—can impact every aspect of life. Despite their different origins, these conditions often share debilitating symptoms: chronic fatigue, joint pain, inflammation, cognitive fog, and emotional strain. Managing them effectively requires more than symptom suppression; it’s about supporting the body’s overall well-being.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Your body has an innate ability to heal, and certain lifestyle adjustments can help you feel better day to day. While there is no one-size-fitsall solution, small, consistent choices can make a real impact.

•Nourishing your body: Food influences inflammation and energy levels. Identifying your personal triggers and incorporating antiinflammatory foods can support healing.

• Gentle movement: Listening to your body is key. Whether it’s a short walk, stretching, or restorative yoga, movement should feel supportive, not exhausting.

•Managing stress: The connection between stress and symptom flares is real. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, or time in nature can help regulate the nervous system.

• Prioritizing rest: Quality sleep is essential for recovery. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine and optimizing your sleep environment can improve restfulness and resilience.

Supportive Therapies at Imagine Float

While no single therapy is a cure, many individuals with Lyme and autoimmune conditions find relief through complementary wellness treatments. At Imagine Float, we offer noninvasive services that many clients have reported as beneficial in managing symptoms.

• Float therapy—profound relaxation and pain relief: Floating in a weightless, Epsom saltfilled environment allows the body to release tension, easing joint pain and muscle stiffness. Research suggests floating helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone), reduce inflammation, and improve sleep. Many experience lasting relief after sessions, with cumulative benefits over time.

•Infrared sauna: Detoxification and Inflammation Support: Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat penetrates deeply into tissues without overwhelming the body. This gentle warmth supports circulation, detoxification, and inflammation reduction, making it an effective tool for easing joint pain and promoting overall wellness. Many of our clients report improved energy levels and decreased discomfort with regular sessions.

• Lymphatic drainage massage: Supporting the Body’s Natural Detox Process: Our Ballancer® Pro provides a non-touch lymphatic drainage massage using a gentle technique designed to encourage the movement of lymph fluid, reducing swelling and supporting immune function. For those with Lyme or autoimmune conditions, proper lymph flow can be crucial in managing symptoms and feeling more balanced.

Creating a Sustainable Self-Care Routine

Managing a chronic condition requires patience and adaptability. While consistency with supportive therapies enhances their benefits, it’s equally important to honor your body’s changing needs.

•Start slowly: Gradually incorporating new therapies allows you to gauge what works best for your body.

•Listen to your body: Some days, combining therapies might feel beneficial, while other days call for rest. Flexibility is key.

•Track your progress: Keeping a simple journal can help identify which therapies provide the most relief and when they are most effective. Remember, the more anecdotal information you can provide your doctor, the faster they can provide you with a game plan!

You Are Not Alone

Living with a chronic condition can feel isolating, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Imagine Float, we create a welcoming space for those seeking holistic support, offering therapies designed to help you feel better, move better, and reclaim a sense of well-being.

While healing is never linear, small, intentional steps can lead to meaningful progress. Whether you’re beginning to explore complementary wellness options or looking to refine your current routine, we’re here to support your journey—one restorative session at a time.

The Art of Being You: An Introduction to Human Design

Human Design tells us that you are a once-in-alifetime, never-to-be-repeated person. When you live aligned with your design, life can become more ease-filled, purposeful, and satisfying.

“Human

Design helps you understand who you truly are—not who you think you should be based on what you’ve been taught to believe. It helps uncover where your life conditioning lies and those limiting beliefs that prevent you from being your best self.”

—April Goff Brown

Human Design is a system that helps you understand the mechanics of your being—how you are energetically wired. It’s a merging of several ancient traditions: the Chinese I Ching, the Hindu chakra system, astrology, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. These systems converge into a single, powerful tool that generates a unique chart—called a bodygraph—based on three simple details: your birth date, birth time, and birth location.

The foundational elements of Human Design are:

• Type: You are one of five energy types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Manifestor, Projector, or Reflector. Your type reveals how you’re designed to interact with the world and how your energy flows most effectively.

• Authority: This is your inner compass for major life decisions. One surprising truth in Human Design is that no one is meant to make big decisions with their mind. Some people are designed to trust their gut, others need time to feel their way through choices, and some get subtle, intuitive nudges that guide them.

• Profile: Your profile is made up of two numbers drawn from the positions of the Sun and Earth in your chart. There are twelve profiles, each describing the unique role you’re here to play.

•Centers: Think of these as energy hubs. While the traditional chakra system has seven centers, Human Design uses nine. The Head, Ajna, Throat, Sacral, and Root centers closely mirror the chakras. The Heart splits into the Identity (or G) center and the Will center, and the Solar Plexus divides into the Emotional Solar Plexus and the Splenic center.

•Gates: Drawing from the I Ching, there are sixty-four gates distributed throughout the

nine centers. Each gate corresponds to a specific area of life and personality, influenced by planetary energy.

•Channels: There are thirty-six channels in total formed when two gates connect across centers. These channels determine which centers are defined—or consistently activated—in your chart. They show your natural gifts, strengths, and how your energy moves through your system.

• Astrological influence: Each chart reflects the imprint of planetary energies at the moment of your birth. Up to twenty-six gates are activated through the Sun, Earth, Moon, and more, shaping how your unique traits express themselves in the world.

Think of it this way: You are a living puzzle, and Human Design is the blueprint that shows how your pieces fit together—perfectly and intentionally. These foundation elements create the edge pieces of your puzzle that hold the depth of you inside.

How Do I Learn My Human Design?

Human Design helps you understand who you truly are—not who you think you should be based on what you’ve been taught to believe. It helps uncover where your life conditioning lies and those limiting beliefs that prevent you from being your best self. This can bring a deep sense of relief and permission to be yourself, without apology. It can help you define your purpose and help you understand your superpower (we all have them).

Learning about your design is fascinating—and life-changing. Start by getting your free customized bodygraph and twelve-page foundation report at aprilgoffbrown.com. From there, consider an interpretation from a certified Human Design Specialist. My Immerse Yourself in You package offers a six-hour intensive where we explore your chart in depth so you can fill in your puzzle pieces and begin living as your authentic, beautifully designed self.

• Prioritize Client-Centric Care: Prioritize active listening, empathy, and personalized care to demonstrate your commitment to their well-being.
