Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

Ican’tbelieve we’re almost at the end of 2025. Where does the time go? I feel we are on the edge of a huge shift in the holistic and spiritual movement. I am seeing practitioners’ businesses expand and grow immensely this year, and we can’t keep enough magazines on the stands!

This 10BEST issue, in my opinion, is the best we’ve ever produced! I said this last year, and the year before that, and the year before that...but I’m eating my words again. We expanded to 84 pages—the largest magazine we’ve ever produced. We have 24 Spotlights—the most we’ve ever had. Many practitioners are telling me they are booked out for months as more and more people are looking for holistic alternatives. Anything is possible if you truly believe it can be!

We are honored to showcase our eighth annual, 2025, 10BEST winners and proud to be the ONLY reader-nominated awards exclusively for the holistic business community in Connecticut. We hope you use this issue as a resource for all of 2026.

We had our 3rd 10BEST Awards Gala on October 16, and it was a fantastic night! Everyone had an amazing time celebrating all our award winners at Farmington Gardens with Western Glam costumes, champagne, delicious food, and a DJ and country line dancing. You can check out pictures of the fun on our website.

We hope this issue inspires you to reach out to and support these amazing people. Our Connecticut holistic practitioners are extremely dedicated to helping their local communities and all of our winners are overwhelmingly grateful to you— our reader—for helping to bring more awareness to all of the amazing natural and ecofriendly choices we have in this great state.

Wishing you health and happiness,

The Power Within: Why Women’s Pelvic

Health Matters

Whenit comes to women’s health, one area often left out of the conversation is the pelvic floor—the group of muscles that form the foundation of our core. These small but mighty muscles support the bladder, uterus, and bowel, and influence everything from posture and stability to intimacy and confidence.

Yet, despite being so essential, pelvic health issues are incredibly common and widely misunderstood. One in three women will experience urinary leakage, pelvic pain, or prolapse in their lifetime—often after childbirth, surgery, or hormonal changes like menopause. Too often, women are told these symptoms are “normal” or “just part of aging.” But here’s the truth: common doesn’t mean normal, and help is available.

That’s where PT WORKS, LLC in Avon, CT, comes in. As a specialized physical therapy practice focusing on pelvic health and wellness, PT WORKS helps women of all ages reconnect with their bodies through individualized, compassionate care. Their expert therapist uses evidence-based techniques—from pelvic floor retraining and manual therapy to education and guided movement to restore comfort, strength, and confidence.

Beyond treatment, PT WORKS believes in empowering women with knowledge. Understanding how to breathe, move, and engage the pelvic floor properly can prevent future problems and enhance overall well-being.

It’s time to break the silence and remove the stigma around pelvic health. When women feel comfortable talking about their bodies, they reclaim control—and that’s powerful.

Your pelvic health is a foundation for how you live, move, and feel every day. If something doesn’t feel right, PT WORKS, LLC is here to help you heal, restore, and thrive.

Selinda Shepherd of PT WORKS, LLC, focuses on women’s pelvic health. She uses an integrative approach combining evidence-based physical therapy with complementary wellness services to support your mind, body, and spirit. Personalized care for improved pelvic health for symptoms such as peri/menopausal symptoms, pelvic pain, bladder/bowel concerns, and pregnancy care. Participates with several major insurance plans. Dr. Patrick DeFrancesco

For over 32 years, I have focused my life and practice on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, providing high-quality chiropractic care to Glastonbury and surrounding communities.

At The Chiropractic Health Center of Glastonbury, I am joined by Dr. Joseph DeFrancesco and Dr. Keith Wade, who treat the whole body—not just the symptoms!

Our team of doctors assist patients in choosing the best care option that helps them reach a new level of spinal health and wellness. Each patient is guided on a journey of knowledge and pathway to experiencing chiropractic care in a safe, natural and effective manner.

Our office has private treatment rooms and the latest chiropractic equipment available today. We take a wholistic approach, performing complete orthopedic and neurological evaluations on every new patient, including digital X-rays, spinal functional analysis, and postural assessment.

We have been in town longer than any other office and provide a personal touch to the patient experience. Our primary mission is to educate the community on the value and benefits of chiropractic care.

As a dedicated doctor of chiropractic, I have completed hundreds of hours of continuing education seminars and received numerous awards. I enjoy volunteering my time to help benefit local charities and I’m an active member of several chiropractic associations. One of the best moments of being a business owner is when we donate a day of service for WTIC’s We Are The Children, showing up with toys and serving breakfast to children on Christmas Day.

Contact us today at 860.657.8800 to schedule a free wellness consultation and explore the possibility of chiropractic care for you.

Dr. Michael Duben, MD Restore Health, LLC

I am truly grateful to be recognized by Natural Nutmeg magazine as one of Connecticut’s 10Best Functional Medicine Providers. This honor reflects not only my years of experience as a board-certified endocrinologist but also my passion for creating a new kind of care experience for patients seeking deeper answers about their health.

I received my undergraduate degree magna cum laude at NYU and my medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. I completed my residency training at the Montefiore and Mount Sinai hospital systems and my fellowship at the Montefiore Hospital/Albert Einstein School of Medicine. I am board certified in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism and am a clinical instructor at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. I have been in private practice since 2003 and has been actively involved in educating local physicians, residents, and PA students in various aspects of management of diabetes, thyroid disease, and other endocrine conditions. I completed training in functional medicine and combine my expertise in traditional endocrinology with more holistic/integrative approach of functional medicine

After nearly twenty-five years in endocrinology, I founded a separate functional endocrinology practice with one goal in mind: to give patients the time, attention, and comprehensive care they deserve. Unlike traditional office visits that can feel rushed, I offer extended appointments—up to ninety minutes for new patients and thirty minutes for follow-ups—so we can carefully explore your history, your unique challenges, and your goals.

By combining the best of conventional endocrinology with a functional medicine approach, I help patients uncover the root causes of hormone, thyroid, metabolic, and other complex health concerns. The result is a truly personalized plan that addresses the whole person—not just the symptoms—so you can feel better, restore balance, and live with more energy and vitality.

This recognition is especially meaningful because it shines a light on what patients have always wanted: a trusted partner who will listen, take the time, and walk alongside them on the journey to lasting health.

Kelly McCarthy, Beyond Words N Wisdom

10Best Energy Healers & Intuitives

I’m Kelly McCarthy, and I have spent over a decade working with energy, attuning myself to the frequencies that shape our reality with a deep understanding that life is not happening to us or even for us, but AS us, THROUGH us. Every energetic frequency, including my own, leaves an imprint on each experience and influences every being we encounter, whether we are conscious of it or not.

Through intuitive readings and energy work, I help reveal the soul’s wisdom, fostering selfawareness, expansion, and a deeper connection to the unseen forces that support us, human, animal, Mother Earth, and beyond. My work is rooted in compassion, clarity, and grounded spirituality, guiding individuals and their animal companions toward greater peace, alignment, and fulfillment in everyday life.

I offer both in-person and remote sessions, making my work accessible to those ready to step into a deeper connection with themselves and the energy that moves through all things.

Pure Spa Wellness

WhenI started in skincare over 30 years ago, I believed I was helping people look better. Over time, I realized I was actually helping them feel better, too. After years in the treatment room—and another 20 spent working in trauma and mental health—I began to see something most people miss: the connection between emotional stress and skin health.

That’s how Pure Spa Wellness came to life. My practice isn’t about covering up problems; it’s about understanding what your skin is trying to tell you. I work with clients who are tired of trying every product and treatment with no results— because the real issue usually isn’t just skin-deep. What I do differently is blend advanced skincare with energy work and emotional awareness. I created SKINtuitive™ Esthetics, a method that helps uncover the stress patterns written on your face. I integrate Reiki energy healing into my facials to open energetic blocks, calm the nervous system, and help emotions process through the body— so healing can finally happen from the inside out.

Each facial at Pure Spa Wellness is customized not only for your skin condition but also for your energy state. I might use CBD skincare for inflammation, microcurrent to lift and tone, or lymphatic drainage to detox the body—but the deeper goal is to help your skin release the emotional tension behind the symptoms.

Many clients come in for a facial and leave feeling lighter, more grounded, and more like themselves again. That’s the part I love most—the shift that happens when people realize their skin is a reflection of what’s happening inside.

My upcoming book, Read My Face: What Your Skin Is Trying to Say When Your Skin Care Isn’t Working, dives into this exact philosophy. It’s for anyone ready to understand the emotional and energetic language of their skin and start healing from within.

At Pure Spa Wellness, I don’t just treat the skin— I listen to it.

Katie Cavenagh, Sacred Cocoon Healing, LLC

Life experience plays a huge part in the way we show up in the world. Resolving depression, anxiety, and an unhealthy mindset has led me to empower and support others along their journey. After incurring injuries, surgeries, life changes, and the pandemic, I was forced to redirect my career and was guided to the path of healing. In that time, I spent over 250 hours learning, studying, and practicing energy and sound healing in a formal setting, at first simply to help myself heal on both the physical and emotional levels. As a musician, I fell in love with using sound in this new way and never looked back.

Having studied energies since the early 90s, I have intertwined my deep knowledge of science and spirituality into my practice. There’s woo and scientific explanations to encourage all people along their path. Employing hypnosis and sound allows for a unique experience into one’s being that results in instant changes.

I enjoy teaching others how to shift their mindset with simple tweaks to everyday habits. Changes start at the mundane level and require consistency to take hold. What I do is help set everything in place and support you while the new beliefs and habits integrate.

With a bit of self-discovery, you can uncover your obstacles and resolve them. By shifting your words, thoughts, feelings, actions, and beliefs, you can make significant movement in your life quickly. Let’s work to help you create a life you love living.

James Osborne, MS, LPC ProNatural Wellness Group

Iwant to thank everyone who has worked with or supported me over the past 50 years as a psychotherapist and for honoring me with eight consecutive years as a Readers’ Choice Ten Best in the category of Holistic Psychology/Counseling. In my view, no one becomes a therapist because they are tightly wrapped. I believe it is more the Wounded Healer Syndrome. It is through confronting our own trauma, drama, pain, or wounding that we become open to the very essence of being human. We gain insight into the trials, tribulations, joys, and beauty of life.

When I was a teenager, I experienced depression and alienation. By age 12, I was reading Kafka and Dostoevsky, thinking they were optimists. I tried to make mathematical sense of my experiences in the world, ignoring my emotions. Years later, that cosmic egg cracked when my daughter was born in 1970. My experiences in the Army from 1967 to 1971 radically changed my perceptions and challenged my worldview. When I returned to college in 1971, I majored in philosophy. My honor’s thesis was on the works of William James and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, titled “Pure Experience and the Living Body.”

Upon graduation, I was ready to enter a doctoral program in Philosophy at Georgetown University, but life got in the way. I went back to college a few years later, entered a counseling program, and completed a two-year Gestalt Therapy program in 1978. My personal work had been mostly Jungian. I see therapy as applied philosophy, blending experiential and cognitive approaches.

Over the years, I have studied many types of therapy, such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Existentialism, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and a form of bilateral tapping called EMDR, used to work with trauma. My initial training and work were in inpatient psychiatry and substance abuse treatment. I also worked with individuals and families with developmental disabilities. The skills I gained from working in those areas provided a strong foundation for my work as a therapist and philosopher. I have practiced and presented in the United States, Europe, and China. I am grateful to now be part of the ProNatural Wellness Group.

When I taught at the New England Institute of Addiction Studies, students would ask me, “What is our job?” My response: We are forest rangers. People get lost and call out for help. We meet them where they are, check that they are physically safe, determine if they need acute care, ask them where they want to go, and how they want to get there. Inevitably, they want to get to the top of the mountain by climbing the face of the mountain. We assess people’s skills, teach them what they need to know, or refer them to someone with the expertise they require. We help them practice the skills, walk with them a while, and wave goodbye. If they get lost again or need help, they call out. It might be us or someone else who will meet them. That is the job of a therapist. People move in and out of therapy as they choose or need.

It is my job to help people get clear on what is important to them, what they value, by holding up a mirror for them to examine if what they say they value is how they live their lives. I assist clients by employing mindfulness and value clarification exercises to examine their thoughts, perspectives, and behaviors. One of my mentors, Lee Silverstein, used to always say to me: “To know and not to do, is not to know.” I firmly believe that the purpose of life is to live it, to be fully engaged, and to celebrate each moment with awareness and gratitude.

Dr. Mark A. Breiner, DDS, FAGD, FIAOMT, Whole Body Dentistry

Delivering high-quality dentistry is undoubtedly one of my goals; however, what I do goes far beyond that. I practice whole-body dentistry. This means I recognize that you cannot have a truly healthy mouth without a healthy body, and you cannot have true health without a healthy mouth.

As a holistic dentist, I view myself as a partner in my patients’ overall health and wellness plan. My innovative approach combines leading-edge technology with a sound, broad, holistic strategy for healthy living, thus, minimizing invasive procedures which so often occur in traditional dentistry.

As with any other discipline, holistic dentists obtain a comprehensive patient history and perform a complete dental examination of the patient to determine the best treatment possible. We communicate openly and clearly with patients so that the patient is playing an integral role in their health and wellness plan. Additionally, we often consult with our patients’ other practitioners, making more informed decisions about the treatment best suited for patients’ overall well-being.

Every tooth and surrounding structure energetically relate to different organs, tissues, and vertebrae. Thus, having metals in the mouth, root canals, cavitations, or reactive materials may all cause health problems while—surprisingly— feeling no effect in the mouth. Conversely, a problem in an organ may manifest as pain or a problem in the mouth.

With the help of energetic testing, classical homeopathy, and excellent conservative nonmetal dentistry, most patients notice a substantial improvement in their oral and overall health. With decades of experience and as a pioneer in holistic dentistry, I would only recommend what I would do for my wife, children, and grandchildren. Whole-body dentistry is the way to go for a truly holistic approach!

10Best Functional Medicine/ Integrative MD/Dentist

My journey into thermography began not as a career choice but as a personal quest for a radiation-free breast health screening. Little did I know this quest would define my why, my purpose, my passion. Discovering thermography was not a chance encounter; it kept crossing my path, as if the universe was trying to tell me something. The turning point came when two friends, both in their early thirties, were diagnosed with breast cancer within months of each other. It was then that I understood the significance of thermography and why it kept reemerging, a purpose far beyond my own needs. My mission became clear: I was determined to inform every woman about the invaluable benefits of thermography.

My girlfriends—and many other women—are faced with the challenge of being overlooked for breast cancer screenings due to their age. It’s for this reason that I felt an unwavering purpose to make a difference, ensuring that every woman, regardless of age, has access to thermography to monitor her breast health.

Being a medical thermographer and the founder of CT Thermography is a role I deeply cherish. I am very fortunate to offer thermography screenings to those seeking a safer, holistic way to assess their health. Through my work, I aim to nurture a sense of empowerment, encouraging individuals to take control of their health journey.

Now in our seventh year, CT Thermography continues to grow alongside rising awareness and demand for thermography. Beyond our main office in Farmington, we have expanded to multiple satellite offices across Connecticut and Massachusetts, made possible through collaborations with dedicated physicians who share our mission. This year, we also welcomed a sister office in New Hampshire, extending our reach while remaining rooted in and committed to community care.

Looking ahead, my commitment remains unwavering: to educate, to empower, and to continue championing this vital work —one woman, one image, one step toward proactive health at a time.

Jennifer Berry Subherban Livin

Product Company

SubherbanLivin is Simsbury’s Give-Back Gift Shop. So how did we win “Best Organic Product Company”? It’s simple. It’s our mission to “bring gifts, services, and wellness products to the Farmington Valley,” and we have delivered. All daily-use products are chemical-free, and the majority are made locally. It’s a win-win.

When I established SubherbanLivin in 2023, I set out to provide a shared retail space for local entrepreneurs with a primary focus on women-owned businesses. I believe there is so much talent in our community. So many of these women were making products that are good for you. I just knew we had to help showcase their products.

After the retail space opened, it became apparent that there was even more opportunity to expand our purpose. As a result, I partnered with friend and career coach Kori Burkholder, and together we launched “Valley EntreprenHERS—Stronger Together,” a Facebook Group and in-person networking/learning series for the local female entrepreneurs. With over 500 members, the group focuses on collaboration over competition. Monthly meetings bring guest speakers to cover topics that are important to their members, like marketing, bookkeeping, and advertising. Local businesses often host the meetings, giving them an opportunity not only to showcase their business but to share lessons they have learned along the way.

Between SubherbanLivin and Valley Entrepreneurs, we are able to achieve things we could never do alone. Together, we have donated over $11k to local charities, sponsored the Hartford Symphony TMMF Fireworks, helped launch new businesses and increase revenue streams for the local entrepreneurs, and even helped with a dog adoption. Together we are stronger!

Dr. Zachary Moran states, “We are a clinic that wants to disrupt the current healthcare model of disease management. Every patient we see, we have the intention of identifying the root cause of their symptoms, providing an individualized treatment plan with a resolution, and leaving the patient with an education on how to maintain their health.”

Roots prioritizes the patient. According to Dr. Moran, “Our services are patient-focused, as health care should be. We pride ourselves on transparency, providing the patient the best treatment options and collaboration to direct their care.”

The doctors at Roots spend hours with each patient to ensure comprehensive care and provide adequate education so the patient can understand why their symptoms started, how to resolve them effectively, and how to prevent future recurrence.

“We prioritize education so patients can be informed on how to maintain optimal health,” Dr. Varano says. Roots has access to and utilizes some of the newest and best diagnostics and therapies in the country to offer the most effective results. “We spend time each week collaborating and learning new diagnostics and therapies to ensure our patients are given the best options for their care,” says Dr. Moran.

Lauri Ingram Awakened Pathways 10Best Life/Health/ Finance/Business Coach

Everyjourney begins with a question. For me, the question was: Why am I standing in my own way? That quiet wondering became the beginning of my path into spiritual coaching, healing, and ceremony, and eventually, the creation of Awakened Pathways.

Before starting this work, I spent more than 40 years in the corporate world, navigating leadership, change, and reinvention. I understand firsthand what it means to carry responsibility, juggle competing demands, and still feel a tug that says, “there’s more.” That lived experience shapes everything I do today. My clients know I’m not speaking from theory; I’ve walked the path of transformation, and I know what it takes to step into a new chapter with clarity and confidence.

To deepen and professionalize my work, I pursued advanced certifications in life coaching, neurolinguistic programming, clinical hypnotherapy, EFT (tapping), and time techniques. These complement my training as an ordained Interfaith/Interspiritual Minister, certified spiritual counselor, and energy practitioner in Crystal Dreaming® and Reiki. Adding coaching to this mix bridges the spiritual and the practical, meaning I can guide clients not only in releasing what no longer serves them but also in setting achievable goals reprogramming subconscious patterns, and anchoring their insights into lasting change.

Clients often come to me at a threshold moment, ready to let go of old stories yet uncertain of the way forward. Together, we enter the “inner labyrinth,” a safe, compassionate space where they can uncover hidden patterns, reclaim inner resources, and awaken to new possibilities.

Beyond one-on-one coaching, I also create and officiate Conscious Ceremonies weddings, vow renewals, memorials, and other life moments. These ceremonies are never “one-size-fits-all.” They are crafted to reflect the unique values and spirit of the people they honor, whether sacred, spiritual, or secular.

What makes my practice unique is the integration: spiritual depth, subconscious tools, and decades of lived wisdom. Many practitioners focus on either the spiritual or the practical, but I bring them together so that change isn’t temporary, it’s embodied and sustainable. With the precision of coaching, the healing of energy work, and the guidance of spiritual connection, my clients experience transformation that touches every layer of their lives. My passion is helping others not just survive change, but to awaken to their own clarity, confidence, and purpose, living with a sense of freedom, resilience, and alignment that ripples into every relationship, choice, and step forward.

Dr. Courtney Holmes, DNP, APRN

Milford Med Spa

10Best Esthetician/Holistic Spa, Integrative APRN/Nursing

If you’ve been feeling unlike yourself lately, exhausted, foggy, moody, or simply “off,” your hormones may be whispering that something’s out of balance.

I’m Dr. Courtney Holmes, and at Milford Med Spa, I’m known as The Alchemista, helping men and women rediscover their natural rhythm, energy, and confidence through personalized hormone care.

Recently honored for the fifth consecutive year as one of Natural Nutmeg magazine’s 10BEST Integrative APRNs, I have built my reputation on a distinctive approach I call alchemy in medicine, where clinical science meets intuition and artistry to create true transformation.

My journey began in traditional medicine, working with patients who were surviving but not thriving. I saw firsthand how restoring hormonal balance could change everything: energy, mood, sleep, libido, and even selfesteem. That realization inspired me to create a more holistic space for healing, one that honors both body chemistry and emotional well-being.

At Milford Med Spa, hormone care is more than lab work; it’s life work. For women, I provide compassionate

Dr. Courtney Holmes,

menopause and perimenopause care to ease hot flashes, brain fog, and fatigue while reigniting vitality and clarity. For men, testosterone optimization restores drive, stamina, and strength. Each program begins with a thorough evaluation and labs through Quest (often covered by insurance), followed by a personalized plan and ongoing support that evolves as your body does.

Beyond helping clients feel like themselves again, balanced hormones support long-term health by reducing risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline, while also maintaining muscle tone, metabolism, and vitality into later years. Research also shows that adequate progesterone levels can play a protective role in breast health, helping to counterbalance the effects of excess estrogen and lowering the risk of breast cancer.

I call myself The Alchemista because true transformation lives at the intersection of science and soul. When hormones come into harmony, something magical happens. You don’t just look renewed, you feel reawakened. Vitality, confidence, and radiance return, and life begins to glow from the inside out.

Milford Med Spa’s nurse injectors: Michele, Nicole, Courtney, and Dana, dedicated to helping every client shine from within.

Our compilation of services is broad and, most importantly, provided by people who love what they do. We are centrally located in Middletown and easily accessible from many parts of the state. We are one of the few practices that still accept and participate with many insurance plans, for we believe that natural health care should be accessible to all, not just a luxury for those who can afford it.

Dr. Samantha Prashad, DACM, L.Ac Integrative Health Mapping

10Best Functional Medicine

Hi,I’m Dr. Sam! Thank you for taking the time to read about me and my work. I hope it helps you or someone in your life.

I am a caring daughter, supportive sister, loving fiancé, passionate holistic doctor, proud first-generation American, and fashion enthusiast, on a mission to help as many people as possible. My path into holistic wellness started with my own health struggles. Bloodwork, labs, and imaging all looked normal. Doctor after doctor said I was healthy, and for years, I was dismissed. At the age of five, I knew something wasn’t right. I knew that if I ate food, I shouldn’t be in pain, and this was my daily life experience.

Over the next fifteen years, my health only got worse, but I had the love of learning on my side. I was the perfect patient zero for a complicated health problem, and I tried it all: diets, heavy metal cleanses, organic everything, chiropractic, massage therapy, energy work, meditation, yoga, quantum healing, physical therapy, vitamin IVs, supplements…you name it! By the time I was twenty, I had seen numerous different practitioners.

At age 21, I graduated from Cornell, passionate to explore medical school through a holistic lens, but it was challenging to determine what modality I would choose to practice. I ventured to San Francisco, CA, in 2017 to pursue a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. I wanted to help people like me reduce the guesswork about where to start when trying to achieve wellness. I wasn’t satisfied to provide them with a clean bill of health—I wanted them to truly feel energized, happy, and vital. It was with this mission that I developed Integrative Health Mapping.

What is an Integrative Health Map? Simple. It’s a roadmap I designed to guide you toward getting well. This map will outline a priority system for your health needs in conjunction with one-onone sessions with me. I use quantum biofield testing, neuro-emotional technique, applied clinical nutrition, acupuncture meridian, and five-element theory, as well as intuitive health coaching. Each map is as unique as the individual for whom it’s designed.

The word “doctor” comes from the Latin docere, meaning “to teach.” It is my job, yes, to work with you on your health, but it is my fundamental duty to you as your doctor to also teach you how to get well and stay well.

10Best Holistic Center, Holistic Weight Loss Center, Integrative APRN/Nursing

Iamhonored to be voted into the 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards in three categories: Holistic Center, Holistic Nurse Practitioner, and Natural Weight Loss. I am deeply grateful for this recognition, because it comes directly from the people I serve every day.

When I opened my holistic practice, my goal was simple: to create the kind of care I wished more people with complex, long-standing conditions—like Lyme disease and related tick-borne infections— could access. Over the years, my practice has grown into a place where we look beyond isolated symptoms to understand the full picture: infections, immune function, autonomic nervous system, sleep, trauma history, pacing oneself, and daily demands.

I care for individuals with both early and persistent Lyme, as well as overlapping conditions such as Long COVID, POTS, and chronic fatigue syndrome. I am actively involved in research with the World Health Organization, and I bring that evolving science back into the exam room. My aim is to translate complex research into clear, practical steps that help you navigate fatigue, pain, cognitive changes, and exercise intolerance more safely.

Being recognized as a 10BEST Holistic Nurse Practitioner means so much to me. In each visit, I focus on helping you understand why things might be happening in your body and what options we have— from diagnostics and herbal and nutraceutical support to necessary medications and rehabilitation strategies—so you can make informed choices that fit your life.

The 10BEST Natural Weight Loss award reflects another area of my work that I care about deeply. Rather than chasing crash diets or “quick fixes,” I focus on metabolism, hormones, inflammation, nervous system regulation, gut health, sleep, movement, and a more compassionate relationship with food and your body.

The emphasis is on sustainable change that supports energy, mood, and long-term health—not perfectionism. These awards are not just about me; they represent all the people who chose to share their health journeys with me and then took the time to vote. Every ballot tells me that careful, science-informed, whole-person care still matters.

Thank you for trusting me with your lives, your stories, your challenges, and your hopes. Being named to the Top10 Readers’ Choice in three categories encourages me to keep doing what I do: integrating research and real-world experience to offer thoughtful, individualized care for every person who walks through my door.

When I was 16, I bought my guitar, saving up for five weeks in my part-time job. As I learned to play, I came upon a song that became my anthem: “If I had wings, no one would ask me should I fly, the bird sings and no one asks her why.” As the song went on, it was clearly relaying the message of being yourself and not caring what others may say.

It’s amazing how that song has stayed with me and followed me in everything I’ve chosen to do. For over 35 years, I worked in youth development, creating programs designed to help youth become all they were meant to be. When I retired in 2017, I thought that part of me was done. Boy, was I wrong! No matter how much I tried to put my helping self on the shelf, she just kept jumping back off. I studied yoga, oracle cards, essential oils, and crystals. I wasn’t sure why, other than I liked them and was curious.

Then, Human Design entered my life, and I knew I’d found the missing piece, what I’d been waiting for. I was fascinated by how it could uncover so much about who I was. I studied it and ultimately obtained certification as a Quantum Human Design Specialist.

Human Design helped me accept and embrace the part of me that is here to help nurture others. I’ve come to love that I’m here as a Projector, here to guide others to finding their true self. I love my design—an openness to all possibilities, introspective yet forgetful, with a fluid way of speaking and sharing information. My alone time and rest are sacred to my wellness. I need to take time to make big decisions and learned that impulsive ones are generally problematic, especially where money is concerned! I became so very aware of what I needed to be my best self.

I now bring Human Design to you. I want to guide you in understanding your energetic blueprint, helping you find your path to accepting all parts of you, understanding the why behind some things, and learning to live as the best, authentic version of yourself. You were, after all, born perfectly designed. I invite you to learn how to return to that perfection. After all, that’s the real purpose of your life—to be you.

The Sacred Journey

The word “healing” gets thrown around a lot these days—Energy Healing, Sound Healing, Shamanic Healing, Color Healing, Remote Healing, Universal Healing, and too many others to name. Each has its own gifts and audience. Yet all healing modalities ask the same of the receiver— something I call the “secret sauce.” After trust and respect are established, regardless of modality and tools being used, it is this “secret sauce” that determines the outcome of the session.

It’s such a simple formula! Open-hearted receptivity combined with a belief in unlimited possibility are all that are required for a positive outcome in any healing session. It’s essential that there can be no doubt nor limiting thoughts or expectations. Healing may manifest in unexpected ways and should be embraced with deep gratitude, in whatever way it may appear!

Receptivity and possibility—the secret sauce in healing.

I offer shamanic journeying and energy practices, sacred sound and crystal/stone healing, hypnotherapy, past-life regression, cord-cutting, soul retrieval, extraction, spirit detachment, house clearings and blessings, CT Justice of the Peace services, and shamanically inspired yoga. I also lead monthly study groups, children’s events, and shamanism and wellness retreats in Costa Rica, Belize, Sedona, Santa Fe/Taos, Mt. Shasta, and other sacred sites throughout the U.S.

Dr. Kathryn M. Firisin, ND Coastal Natural Medicine, LLC

Hope.

Naturopathic medicine restores hope. True healing lies in the belief that the body has the innate wisdom to move in the direction of healing. When patients feel well, they have an opportunity to reach their highest potential.

After many years working in a conventional medical field, it was clear that patients needed more. That, coupled with my own healing journey, I was able to eliminate medications and resolve symptoms of PCOS and hypothyroid. My quality of life dramatically improved when living with Lyme and psoriatic arthritis.

I am inspired when healing not only improves physical symptoms but also results in spiritual and emotional shifts. When a patient tells me she quit her job and started her own business, or someone overcomes anxiety to gain clarity, embracing gender transition—this is what makes naturopathic medicine unique.

Coastal Naturopathic Medicine is a premier naturopathic practice ooted in fundamental naturopathic principles. Each patient receives individualized care, removing obstacles to healing, giving the body what it needs, and stimulating the body’s ability to heal itself. I am passionate about bringing naturopathic medicine to the community and continuing to learn and grow.

I am so grateful to those in the community who have voted for me in the 10BEST. Natural Nutmeg brings light and focus to real, accurate, and useful information to those looking for an alternative to conventional wisdom. I am honored to be part of a publication and grateful to those who supported me in 10BEST.

10Best Coach: Life/Business/Finance/Health

Formany of us, life moves in chapters and seasons. In some seasons, we feel called to grow, to shift, or to step up to another level. This is when people find me. Looking for a new job, wanting to accelerate in leadership, increase business results, grow emotional intelligence, increase self-care, reduce stress, or just be happier and get unstuck.

After a 30-year career in leadership and organizational development, including 25 years in corporate human resources and serving as chief human resources officer for public companies. I experienced my own profound pivot. I recognized that success without well-being is not success at all. I transitioned into full-time high-performance coaching because I saw a consistent truth: people are most alive, most powerful, and most clear when they are aligned with their purpose, values, and well-being.

Today, I work with individuals and executives who find themselves at career, life, or health inflection points—moments when something is ending, something new is beginning, or the internal call to evolve can no longer be ignored. My coaching blends professional development, personal transformation, and whole-life wellness, grounded in both leadership science and the psychology of behavior change.

I use a patented and proven coaching framework that integrates executive leadership development tools; nervous system and mindset regulation practices; goal, identity, and habit transformation methods; and wellness optimization strategies for energy, clarity, and long-term mental and physical health.

This approach is both strategic and deeply personal. It supports clients in career transition and reinvention; leadership and executive presence; overcoming stress, burnout, and chronic overwhelm; strengthening confidence, self-trust, and happiness; and designing a life that feels energizing, meaningful, peaceful, and aligned.

This is not surface-level coaching. It is human transformation, guided with compassion, evidence-based tools, and real-world leadership insight. Clients often say they leave our work with not only a new level of success and a clearer path forward, but a greater sense of self, health, possibility, and inner steadiness.

If you are at a turning point professionally, personally, or within your wellbeing, and know there has got to be more than this-you are not alone. Transformations are meant to be supported. I am here to guide, coach, and support you.

Fairfield Family Health is redefining what modern medicine can look like. Located in the heart of Fairfield County, this leading integrative and functional medicine center is built on a simple yet powerful belief: healthcare should be compassionate, collaborative, and personalized.

The practice embodies its tagline, “Healthcare as it should be,” through an approach that blends the best of conventional and naturopathic medicine. Patients receive comprehensive, evidence-based care that honors both science and individuality—an experience that feels refreshingly different from traditional medical offices.

At the helm is Dr. Jaquel Patterson, ND, MBA, a nationally recognized leader, speaker, and authority in integrative medicine. With nearly two decades of clinical and public health experience, Dr. Patterson has earned a reputation for her deep expertise, visionary leadership, and commitment to patient empowerment. As the current President of the national association, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and Treasurer of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, she has helped shape the national dialogue around functional and integrative medicine and has trained thousands of doctors in the functional medicine space.

Dr. Patterson’s own health experiences— navigating chronic illness and witnessing her mother’s battle with autoimmune disease— fueled her mission to create a center where patients are deeply heard, thoroughly evaluated, and holistically treated. That vision became Fairfield Family Health, a sanctuary for patients seeking true healing.

From the moment patients step inside, they sense that this is not a typical medical practice. Each visit begins with listening—genuine, unhurried, and intentional. Providers take the time to understand not only symptoms but the story behind them: lifestyle, environment, nutrition, mental health, and life stressors. This whole-person approach forms the foundation for care that addresses the root causes of illness rather than simply managing symptoms.

Fairfield Family Health’s multidisciplinary team includes naturopathic physicians, family medicine providers and prescribers (nurse practitioner and medical doctor), and functional medicine specialists who work collaboratively to craft individualized treatment plans. Their model merges advanced diagnostics with natural and lifestyle medicine, ensuring every patient benefits from both precision and compassionate partnership.

Fairfield Family Health sees children through adults with particular expertise in Lyme disease and tick-borne infections, digestive and autoimmune disorders, integrative psychiatry, hormonal and thyroid imbalances, and weight loss. Many patients arrive after years of frustration—seeing multiple specialists without resolution—and finally find answers here. Through comprehensive lab testing, integrative therapies, and clear education, they experience what it means to have a care team truly invested in their outcomes.

Treatment plans may include nutritional and herbal medicine, bioidentical hormone replacement, IV nutrient therapy, ozone therapy, SOT therapy, Emsella, Emsculpt, weight-loss programs, stress-modulation techniques, and, when appropriate, prescription medications. The clinic also offers a wide range of restorative and longevity therapies, including far-infrared sauna, red light therapy, cold plunge, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which will be added soon.

What makes the practice truly stand out is its culture of care. Patients frequently describe feeling seen, heard, and supported—a rare experience in today’s fast-paced medical system. Appointments are longer, conversations are meaningful, and follow-ups are personalized. Every touchpoint—from the first phone call to ongoing care—is designed with compassion and excellence in mind.

This commitment has earned Fairfield Family Health wide recognition. The practice has been nominated for community awards seven years in a row and was recently named among the 10BEST Holistic Centers in Connecticut. These accolades reflect not only the quality of clinical care but also the team’s integrity, warmth, and dedication.

Fairfield Family Health continues to grow and innovate—expanding its services, research partnerships, and community reach while staying true to its mission: transforming the healthcare experience through integrative, personalized, and human-centered care.

Looking ahead, the practice plans to offer expanded wellness programs and collaborative therapies that make integrative medicine more accessible. For the Fairfield Family Health team, medicine is not just about treating disease— it’s about fostering lifelong well-being. Fairfield Family Health represents what modern medicine should be: integrative, compassionate, and deeply human.

10Best Coach: Life/Business/ Finance/Health

My journey as a business owner and holistic practitioner began with a clear vision: to provide exceptional services while making a meaningful impact on the community. I founded Tind-All Creative Marketing to help businesses thrive through strategic, results-driven marketing—while giving back to the community. In addition, as the owner of Your Wellness Circle, LLC, I extend my passion to health, life, and business coaching, guiding clients to achieve alignment, balance, and success across every area of their lives.

What sets me apart is my steadfast commitment to integrity and making a positive impact in the community. At the core of both of my businesses is the belief that business can be a force for good, so a portion of every client investment is donated to local nonprofit organizations that are making a real difference. I don’t simply take a client’s money; if something isn’t necessary, I’ll be upfront about it, and if I feel my services aren’t the right fit, I let them know. I am deeply passionate about helping businesses build strong foundations so that marketing and sales work together seamlessly, not against each other. My approach is both strategic and heart-centered, giving clients clarity, confidence, and a clear path to success at every step.

Through Tind-All Creative Marketing, we provide full-service digital marketing solutions, including branding, social media management, and tailored campaigns designed to meet each client’s unique goals. At the same time, through Your Wellness Circle, LLC, I offer health, life, and business coaching, helping clients recognize the deep connection between these areas. Over the years, I’ve learned that when one aspect of life—personal, health, or business—is out of balance, it affects everything else. My coaching is focused on restoring alignment and empowering clients to thrive holistically, enabling them to experience success, clarity, and fulfillment across all areas of their lives.

Looking ahead, I envision expanding my impact even further— helping businesses succeed while improving the lives of those behind them. I am committed to using my expertise and resources as a force for good, fostering growth, wellness, and meaningful change for both my clients and the community.

My most cherished memories as a business owner and holistic practitioner aren’t tied to a single moment—they’re in the countless meaningful relationships I’ve had the privilege to cultivate over the years. I am deeply grateful to the clients who have trusted me, believed in me, and supported me throughout my journey. It is this network of connections, built on trust and collaboration, that continually fuels my passion and inspires me to do the work I love every day.

Abundant Health Massage Therapy & Wellness

10Best Bodywork/Chiropractic Physician/Massage Therapy

Since 2009, I have provided my clients with customized, quality therapeutic massage sessions. In addition, I am trained in Cupping, Medicupping, and two new services I am excited to offer: Thai Herbal Facial Poultice and the Lymphatic Brush. I have been interested in holistic health and healing from an early age and have discovered that massage therapy is a very effective modality for treating stress, as well as pain. I wanted to offer my clients a drug-free alternative for relaxation and pain relief.

I am Board Certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and enjoy furthering my knowledge and expertise through ongoing continuing education courses. In my experience, incorporating cupping into the massage session yields superior results. Cupping is a type of myofascial release, as the suction created within the cup separates the fascial layers and helps release muscle knots. It’s a fantastic alternative for clients who need their muscle knots and tightness addressed but may not tolerate the potential discomfort of deep tissue massage. Cupping is also excellent for reducing pain and inflammation, improving joint mobility, and increasing local circulation.

My sessions are customized for each client. I am an excellent listener and communicator, and I will adjust the level of pressure based on the client’s preferences and pain tolerance. I always encourage clients to speak up and let me know if they feel uncomfortable in any way. My clients can expect to feel the benefits and results of their therapeutic sessions.

I am also certified as a Consulting Hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and offer sessions to help clients with stress, self-confidence, and weight management.

I enjoy writing educational and engaging articles for Natural Nutmeg’s readers. The articles written by the many qualified local holistic health professionals are an excellent resource for our community. I consider it a compliment when new clients tell me they decided to schedule a session with me because they enjoyed reading my articles and the information they gained from them.

10Best Naturopathic Physician, Fairfield County

Istill remember getting ear infections as a young child and having to drink the “pink stuff”—antibiotics. Again and again, the fever and ear pain would return, and again and again, I’d have to take more of it. Then one day, someone introduced my father to homeopathy. Intrigued, he read The Organon of Medicine by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, and decided to give it a try—despite our pediatrician’s warnings. Within minutes of my first homeopathic remedy, the pain vanished, and soon the infections stopped completely.

That moment changed everything for my family. My parents were convinced that this was the way the body was meant to heal—by activating its own innate intelligence. My father began integrating natural medicine into his dental practice, and I grew up surrounded by conversations about energy, healing, and innovation. I always knew I would one day become a doctor who helps people restore health rather than merely suppress symptoms. By the time I prepared for medical school, the choice of naturopathic medicine was clear. Everything is energy—and true healing begins at that level. I have devoted myself to exploring the body’s energetic and regenerative potential. I was drawn especially to neurological and inflammatory conditions such as autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury, and chronic infections like Lyme disease and long COVID. These complex cases often involve the brain and immune system in tandem, requiring a multidimensional approach. This led me to train in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and EEG neurofeedback. I was privileged to study under pioneers in both fields, and I became one of the first practitioners in the world to combine these two transformative modalities. My work now includes frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM), biomagnetism, and EAV testing, which reveal and rebalance the body’s underlying energetic patterns. We also incorporate Rife technology, neurofield therapies, and TruDose™ regenerative therapy, which unleashes the body’s own healing capacity in extraordinary ways. Most recently, I’ve introduced Kambo, a traditional Amazonian detoxification therapy, to help the body eliminate toxins, fight infections, and strengthen the immune system—a powerful complement to the other modalities I use. Healing is not just about eliminating symptoms—it’s about restoring harmony and resonance throughout the system. Every day, I’m grateful to witness people reconnect with their vitality, clarity, and purpose through the remarkable intelligence of the human body.

Dr. Yvette M. Whitton, ND, MS Adonai Optimal Health & Wellness

10Best Naturopathic Physician

My journey into naturopathic oncology was not born of ambition— it was born of heartbreak, faith, and divine direction. In 2013, my mother was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer, and for the first time in my life, I felt completely powerless. Watching the woman who gave me life slowly fade while medicine offered only despair ignited a fire that would forever change the course of my existence. In those final months, divine guidance led me to the Gerson Therapy, a holistic protocol centered on detoxification, nutrition, and the restoration of the body’s innate healing potential.

I clung to it—not as a scientist desperate for data, but as a daughter desperate for hope. And by God’s grace, it worked. It gave my mother precious time—time to laugh, to love, and to live without the ravages of chemotherapy or radiation. It gave me the first glimpse of what true healing looks like when medicine is partnered with nature, and the body is supported rather than suppressed. That experience became my sacred call to purpose.

After her passing, I made a vow: I would never again feel helpless in the face of cancer. I devoted myself to learning everything available in the realm of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, to building a bridge between conventional oncology and natural therapeutics, and to helping patients not only survive treatment, but thrive through it.

Each certification was more than an academic milestone— it was an act of devotion. From Gerson Therapy to Ozone Therapy, Advanced Mistletoe Training through PAAM, and Terrain-Centric Medicine with the Metabolic Terrain Institute of Health, every layer of knowledge became a prayer of service. Joining the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians connected me with others who shared this sacred responsibility—to heal with integrity, science, and compassion.

My “why” is my mother’s legacy. It’s the look in a patient’s eyes when they realize cancer does not define them. It’s the joy of witnessing tumor markers improve, energy return, or fear give way to faith. Through Adonai Optimal Health & Wellness, I live my calling daily— to bridge science and spirit, bring light into the darkest diagnoses, and ensure that no patient walks their cancer journey feeling powerless or alone. My “why” is simple yet profound: to transform suffering into strength, despair into purpose, and medicine into miracle—one patient, one heartbeat, one act of faith at a time.

Abriella Reads Abriella Reads, LLC

Transformation has been the heartbeat of my life for as long as I can remember.

I began my professional path as a counselor over fifteen years ago, driven by a deep desire to support others through life’s most complicated and tender moments. I loved the work, the breakthroughs, and the privilege of holding space in the dark corners where clarity and healing first spark their light. But there was always a quiet knowing inside me that said healing could go further. Deeper. Wider. Into places talk alone couldn’t reach.

That inner voice invited me to expand: first through yoga, then energy work, hypnosis, and intuitive development. What I discovered is that people don’t heal in pieces. They heal when the mind, body, energy, and spirit are all seated at the same table. Real liberation comes when we treat the whole person and welcome every part of their story.

Today, I blend clinical experience with spiritual and energetic practices to help people transform from within. My work is grounded, traumainformed, and deeply intuitive. I don’t offer “quick fixes” or airy spiritual bypassing. Instead, I guide clients into true personal empowerment. Together, we unlearn the belief systems that keep them small, reconnect them to their inner wisdom, and build healthier pathways for love, purpose, and peace to flow.

What sets me apart is my ability to hold both science and spirituality with equal respect. I speak the language of psychology and the language of the soul, allowing me to translate between the two. My clients feel profoundly seen and supported because nothing is too emotional, too mystical, or too complicated to welcome into the room. Healing becomes not only possible, but inevitable.

I started my business to create a sanctuary for people who crave self-trust more than self-doubt, who want to be active participants in their own transformation, and who feel called to remember who they truly are. My mission is simple: help others reclaim their power, reconnect to their inner truth, and live lives that feel like home.

Healing isn’t just my career. It’s my calling. And I am honored to walk this path with those who are ready to rise.

Beth Reel, Beth Reel Coaching

My work began long before it had a name. For years, I navigated leadership roles and caregiving, always striving to be capable, composed, and strong for those around me. Amid high expectations and perfectionism, I slowly realized I was living in my head, losing myself and my ability to simply be present in my life.

Nature brought me back home. Stepping into the forest softened my nervous system. The trees asked nothing of me, except my presence. I found my way back to myself through studying yoga, meditation, shamanism, mindful outdoor guiding, and women’s circle leadership. In this process, I discovered an essential truth: when women reconnect with the natural world, they reconnect with themselves. They remember who they are.

Through Beth Reel Coaching, I guide women who are ready to pause the noise of everyday life and reawaken their inner wisdom. I weave together professional coaching, forest bathing, seasonal ritual, and earth-based practices to support gentle, sustainable growth.

What sets my work apart is the way I integrate depth without overwhelm— honoring both spirituality and psychology. I’ve walked through challenge, reinvention, and transformation, and I meet others not as an expert above them, but as a grounded companion. Women need spaces where they can breathe, feel supported, and become who they are meant to be.

Whether we’re in the forest, in a circle, or in quiet conversation—I am here to help you discover the heart of your journey.

10Best Naturopathic Physician

My practitioner journey began long before my formal naturopathic training. Rooted in decades of mentorship with master gardeners, renowned herbalists, intuitives, and energy healers, this unique blend of apprenticeship and clinical expertise has shaped my creative and highly intuitive approach to healthcare.

With over sixteen years as a naturopathic physician and more than twenty years as an esthetician, licensed massage therapist, and aromatherapeutic herbalist, I’ve continued to deepen my practice with certifications in clinical hypnotherapy, mental wellness coaching, auriculotherapy, electro-acupuncture, and advanced StemWave therapy. Drawing from these rich experiences, I weave holistic lifestyle counseling naturally into every naturopathic consult, bodywork appointment, skincare treatment, and StemWave session, creating an aligned atmosphere where true healing feels possible and deeply personal.

I help chronic sufferers finally uncover and then effectively address the underlying causes of their unique health challenges, using functional diagnostic testing and foundational lifestyle medicine. My experience has confirmed that for true healing to occur, the “medicine” is not something the doctor gives or does to the patient, but instead, constitutes a cooperative and highly collaborative process of consultation, recommendation, implementation, progress, and feedback, alongside the patient. I believe in meeting patients where they are—never attempting to do more for them than they are ready to do for themselves.

My ideal patient has begun to see the shortcomings of conventional methods. They approach their wellness journey with curiosity and an openness to making healthy lifestyle adjustments, seeking guidance in laying a firm wellness foundation and building resilience through rejuvenating practices, inevitably leading toward greater mental agility and physical vitality.

I work to restore optimal function by reducing inflammation naturally and holistically, detoxification, healing the gut, and resetting the microbiome. I’ve witnessed the real possibility of slowing aging processes and reversing chronic conditions, including digestive issues, skin and autoimmune conditions, endocrine and metabolic dysregulation, inflammatory, fatigue, viral, and pain syndromes, and musculoskeletal conditions.

I am known for my highly effective, sustainable, lifestyle-based weight-loss, detox, and vital aging programs. I offer a lowcost “ask-a-naturopath” monthly membership and a premium year-long seasonal detoxification program.

10Best Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture

Since 2009, West Hartford and Avon Acupuncture has been a trusted wellness center, offering acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to the Greater Hartford community. With six licensed acupuncturists and four dedicated administrators, the practice blends time-honored Eastern wisdom with modern technology to create a compassionate and effective approach to healing.

Each provider is nationally board-certified and licensed by the State of Connecticut, treating a broad range of conditions, including pain, migraines, trauma recovery, fertility, immune and gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety, and neuropathy. Treatments may incorporate electro-stimulation, medi-crystal infrared heat mats, Sonos sound therapy, and microneedles, paired with traditional modalities such asfire cupping, gua sha, and tuina massage. This thoughtful combination restores harmony to both body and mind. Grounded in the five pillars of TCM—acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, mind-body exercise, and massage—the clinic’s philosophy centers on treating the whole person, not just symptoms. Open seven days a week, West Hartford and Avon Acupuncture accept most major insurance plans, including HUSKY, Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and VA benefits, ensuring care remains accessible to all.

Founder Dr. Jill Kleiber discovered the power of acupuncture as an undergraduate at Northern Arizona University after experiencing life-changing results with TCM. “It was nothing short of miraculous,” she recalls. “Acupuncture and herbal medicine helped me overcome Lyme disease and Bell’s palsy.”

Dr. Kleiber often witnesses profound transformations in her patients. “A woman with severe sciatica who could barely walk was 80% improved within two weeks. Another with chronic facial pain from trigeminal neuralgia found relief after just two sessions. Many women we support through fertility care return for future pregnancies—it’s an honor to walk alongside them in that journey.”

Equally inspiring, she says, is her dedicated team. “Seeing relaxed, smiling patients in our waiting room is the greatest gift. Our staff truly cares, and it shows in the lives we touch.”

Recently, the clinic added a new member to the healing team: Biggie, a five-month-old Mini Australian Shepherd in training to become a therapy dog. “He brings so much joy to the office,” says Dr. Kleiber. “Our patients light up when they see him—it’s another layer of healing energy.”

When she’s not in the clinic, Dr. Kleiber enjoys wildlife conservation and scuba diving—passions that reflect her lifelong commitment to balance, nature, and holistic well-being.

10Best Yoga

Some stories begin with a business plan. Mine began with a calling.

After closing my first fitness studio, Core, a decade ago, I knew I’d one day return to community—just differently. That first chapter taught me the cost of hustle without harmony. I had built a thriving fitness space but lost myself in the process. What emerged over the next ten years was a woman more grounded, intuitive, and aligned than ever before.

When the world began to reopen after the pandemic, I could feel the collective craving for connection. Real, embodied, heartcentered connection. People weren’t just seeking a workout; they were seeking themselves. That’s when Vibe was born.

Vibe isn’t a reboot of what once was. It’s an evolution. It’s a living, breathing entity—a Center for Movement & Healing Arts in Plainville, CT, where science meets spirit, anatomy meets energy, and movement becomes medicine. Inside Vibe’s beautiful, inviting space, you’ll find weekly classes in Yoga, Pilates, Dance and Stretch Therapy, and seasonal offerings of holistic workshops and even Functional Fitness Boot Camps, but you’ll also feel something special in the air: true community.

My degree in Health Science and Sports Medicine gives me a deep respect for the body as a vessel of wisdom. My training as a Shaman and Energy Medicine Practitioner allows me to see beyond the muscles and bones, into the subtle field where transformation truly begins. Through conscious movement and frequencybased practices, I help people raise their vibration (physically, emotionally, and spiritually), so they can align with their highest and best self.

At Vibe, everyone belongs. You’ll find all kinds of humans moving side by side—athletes, healers, busy parents, beginners, skeptics, and seekers. Our motto? Come as you are. Do what you can. Take what you like and leave the rest.

Two years in, Vibe has become a sanctuary for those ready to remember who they are, and to move through life with strength, grace, and joy.

Dancing in the Kitchen: How Food Affects Your Mood

It“Even when my family found ourselves in chaos, I was beginning to handle things with more grace and understanding. And I knew it had so much to do with the food I was eating.”
—Andrea Anderson

was evening, and I was making dinner for myself and my family. I decided to turn on some music; the kitchen felt quiet as my sons and husband were tucked away in different rooms of the house, my boys playing peacefully (which was always a welcome thing!), and my husband watching television to shift out of work mode.

I found some music that I loved and began singing and dancing around the counter as I made dinner. Next thing I knew, I found myself in a full-out impromptu dance routine. I moved easily and excitedly around the kitchen island. I stopped making dinner for a while, as I immersed myself in the upbeat music and the fun of dancing!

After some time, I realized it was important to finish making dinner. And I did so while I continued to listen to music and gently move my body to the beat.

I felt happy, excited. ALIVE.

These were emotions I wasn’t typically tuning into during those days. In those days, when my sons were young, I spent a lot of time tending to them and their neurodiverse behaviors. Let’s just say that in my life at that time, things didn’t often feel easy. With so much focus on helping my sons become the best version of themselves, I would

often end up getting stressed, taking some of their actions (or inactions) personally, and, well, our family would (more often than I would like to admit) end up in an argument, with no one listening to one another.

The fact that I was dancing around the kitchen feeling happy, upbeat, and alive was amazing for me! I had lost touch with these feelings.

And then it hit me—I had been experimenting with eating kale.

The Power of Food

At the time, I was in a nutrition program in NYC, learning about the effects of food on our bodies. What fascinated me was the connection between food and mood. I hadn’t been introduced to this idea before.

I was in the middle of a food experiment (homework assignment) with kale. It was required that we not only learned about the properties of foods but also experiment with them to see how they affected our body AND our emotions.

I had been eating kale for about three weeks straight. I ate it four or five times a week. I sautéed it with onions, fresh minced garlic, and some oil, and it was delicious.

Back then, I had never eaten kale, nor had I any interest in it. I didn’t know how to cook it, and I didn’t think it looked very appetizing. However, to learn more about how food affects the body (and to complete my assignment), I ate kale for three weeks.

On this particular evening, feeling amazing and dancing while I made dinner, I realized the kale had caught up with me. I was feeling great because I had been eating a food that helps to lift your emotions and energize you.

And in that moment, I was living the proof.

As I continued the experiment, I found myself singing and dancing in the car. In the grocery store, in my driveway—anywhere and everywhere!

When the experiment ended, I didn’t stop. My mood was too good to let go of! I wanted to keep feeling great. Even when my family found ourselves in chaos, I was beginning to handle things with more grace and understanding. And I knew it had so much to do with the food I was eating.

I had made the connection between food and mood. And I didn’t want to go back.

As this food–mood process occurs, we begin to connect more with the people we love. We walk away from potential arguments, step out of chaos more easily, and begin to feel good instead of stressed and uncomfortable. And every aspect of our lives has the potential to improve. Calm sets the tone for more good things to come.

Stress, Toxicity, and Sleep: A Naturopathic Doctor’s Guide to Breaking the Cycle

“Inflammatory foods like refined sugars, processed oils, and food sensitivities create additional metabolic burden, while nutrient-poor diets fail to provide building blocks for detoxification and repair.”

—Dr. Dana Lapointe, ND

For many with chronic pain, periods of increased discomfort seem to appear out of nowhere. Back pain intensifies, arthritis flares, and old injuries ache more. While it’s easy to blame weather or aging, the real culprits are often three interconnected factors conventional medicine rarely addresses together: stress, toxic burden, and sleep quality.

As a naturopathic physician, I see this pattern repeatedly. Patients managing pain well suddenly struggle, frustrated about why their conditions have worsened. The answer lies in understanding how these three factors create a vicious cycle amplifying musculoskeletal pain.

The Stress-Pain Connection

During stressful periods, your body releases cortisol and stress hormones that directly impact inflammation, muscle tension, and pain perception.

Your nervous system shifts into fight-or-flight mode, triggering chronic muscle contraction that restricts blood flow, reduces oxygen delivery, and creates trigger points that radiate pain. Cortisol increases systemic inflammation, making existing injuries more painful and slower to heal.

Common triggers include major life changes, financial pressures, caregiving responsibilities, and constant digital stimulation.

The Toxicity-Pain Connection

Toxic burden significantly amplifies pain response. When your body is overwhelmed by environmental toxins, metabolic waste, or inflammatory foods, it triggers chronic, low-grade inflammation, worsening pain.

Your detoxification pathways work overtime processing everyday exposures—pesticides, chemicals in personal care products, air pollution, and alcohol. When overburdened, inflammatory compounds accumulate in muscles and joints, lowering the pain threshold.

Dietary choices play a crucial role. Inflammatory foods like refined sugars, processed oils, and food sensitivities create additional metabolic burden, while nutrient-poor diets fail to provide building blocks for detoxification and repair. Toxicity triggers include processed or reactive foods, alcohol, chemicals, electromagnetic exposures, poor digestive function, and inadequate hydration, all of which impair toxin elimination.

The Sleep-Pain Connection

Sleep is when your body performs critical repair work, and detoxification pathways are most active. Poor sleep interrupts tissue healing while allowing toxic compounds to accumulate. During deep sleep, your glymphatic system clears metabolic waste. Without adequate sleep, inflammatory compounds build up and cortisol is dysregulated, feeding back into the pain cycle. Sleep disruptors include shift work, irregular schedules, chronic stress, blue light exposure, caffeine and alcohol, and pain itself, creating a catch-22.

Why Conventional Approaches Fall Short

Most reach for pain relievers or sleep medications, but this only masks symptoms without addressing the underlying cycle. The conventional model treats each issue separately, but these three factors are so interconnected that addressing them in isolation rarely creates lasting change.

A Comprehensive Naturopathic Approach

My approach addresses all three factors simultaneously, breaking the cycle rather than simply managing symptoms.

• Stress physiology support identifies individual triggers and develops personalized protocols. Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha help

regulate cortisol, while magnesium reduces muscle tension and supports sleep.

• Detoxification and nutrition reduce the toxic burden through customized anti-inflammatory diets that eliminate food sensitivities while emphasizing liver-supporting nutrients.

• Supplementation supports a healthy inflammatory response and strengthens the gut-brain connection. Therapeutic exercise and hydrotherapy increase mobility, strength, and circulation to flush toxins.

• Advanced regenerative therapy utilizes StemWave acoustic wave technology to directly counter stress-induced changes. When stress causes chronic muscle tension and restricted blood flow, StemWave’s acoustic waves mechanically stimulate vasodilation, restoring circulation to oxygen-starved tissues. The acoustic energy disrupts inflammatory pathways while activating mechanotransduction—where cells convert mechanical energy into healing signals, accelerating tissue repair even when stress hormones work against healing.

• Therapeutic bodywork combines deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy to release chronic tension, while relaxation massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and auriculotherapy activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation essential for healing.

• Sleep optimization addresses circadian disruption through lifestyle modifications and supplements supporting natural sleep cycles.

When You Need Support

If you experience chronic pain flare-ups, address them comprehensively. Integrative approaches combining stress-reduction techniques, detoxification support, and targeted treatments like trigger point therapy, auriculotherapy, and StemWave address both immediate discomfort and underlying inflammatory processes.

You don’t have to accept chronic pain as inevitable. By understanding the stress–toxicity–sleep triangle and taking a proactive approach, you can break the cycle and reclaim comfort, mobility, and vitality.

Dr Dana Lapointe is a passionate advocate for innovative, non-invasive treatments and has been at the forefront of bringing StemWave therapy to her community. Practicing in CT since 2010, she offers telemedicine, online coaching, and group wellness programs, low-cost and premium memberships, including her Seasonal Detox Program. The Lymphatic Brush: A Luxurious Approach to Natural Detoxification

The“The

Lymphatic Brush’s design mimics the natural, rhythmic contractions of the lymphatic system to manually push fluids and stimulate lymph flow.”

lymphatic system is the cornerstone of the immune system and plays a critical role in our health. It activates and coordinates our innate immunological responses. Its functions include maintaining fluid balance, supporting immune function and defense, draining excess extracellular fluid, and recycling cells at the end of their life cycle. It is a vast network comprised of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and lymphoid organs, such as the thymus, tonsils, and spleen. These collect and circulate, filter, trap, and destroy pathogens, and return fluid and proteins back into the bloodstream.

Lymph’s Role in Our Health

Lymph is a clear, watery fluid that carries these waste products. When lymph-rich protein is stagnant, it hardens, forming calcifications. This impairs lymphocytes (lymph cells) and triggers inflammation, leading to the appearance of dull skin and wrinkles, dark circles, acne, and rosacea. Toxic lymph causes cells to suffocate, which leads to the appearance of aging.

The solution for healthy, glowing skin is to relieve tension in the connective tissue and underlying muscle to allow the free flow of blood and fluids; increase circulation to feed the skin with nutrient and oxygen-rich blood; and support the skin’s natural filtration system to remove excess fluid and cellular waste. Stimulating cell renewal can be accomplished by manual lymphatic drainage (MLD).

What Is the Lymphatic Brush?

The Lymphatic Brush (TLB) by Cecily Braden is specifically designed for facial and body lymphatic drainage. Expertly engineered with a patented design, it offers a luxurious approach to

enhancing lymphatic circulation and supporting natural detoxification, resulting in radiant skin. The brush ensures proper contact with the skin’s surface and accurate alignment with the lymph nodes and lymphatic pathways.

TLB features a proprietary bristle pattern and density, designed to gently yet effectively engage the skin in a precise way to target the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the surface. Its design mimics the natural, rhythmic contractions of the lymphatic system to manually push fluids and stimulate lymph flow. The bristles are soft but durable; they won’t scratch, irritate, or harm sensitive or fragile skin.

How Does It Help?

Benefits of the Lymphatic Brush include:

•Feeds the skin and increases its ability to absorb vital nutrients

•Decongest and clear acne

• Reduce puffiness

•Brighten dark circles under the eyes

•Renew facial contour; lift and reduce sagging skin

•Brighten the complexion, create a healthy, radiant glow

•Stimulate the production of collagen and elastin

•Regenerate facial tissue; restore vitality

• Minimize fine lines and soften wrinkles

Tight tissue doesn’t receive fluid well. It creates blockages that cause stagnation and the accumulation of cellular waste, inhibiting the free flow of fluid within the tissue. Adding heat before the treatment helps warm the tissue, melt muscle tension, increase blood flow, and calm the nervous system. The Lymphatic Brush abbreviated treatment begins with a relaxing, hot towel applied to

Lymphatic Brush in use during a facial treatment.

the face and neck. The longer, 60-minute facial treatment begins with the warm, comforting Thai Herbal Facial Poultice. It works with the facial muscles and delicate eye area to reduce puffiness, minimize fine lines, tone, sculpt, and provide an overall facial contour and lift. The warm herbal compress, filled with a blend of organic botanicals, is used to smooth fine lines, improve skin clarity, and soothe and nourish the facial muscles and the delicate eye area. The poultice is steamed to soften it and release the therapeutic benefits of the herbs for a gentle facial massage.

As with most treatments, some clients are not good candidates, including those with acute congestive heart failure, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), active bleeding, blood clots, or embolisms, untreated cancers, acute renal failure or other kidney problems, acute infection, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The Lymphatic Brush facial therapy is a minimalist approach to skincare that focuses on the function of the skin. It’s a gentle, pragmatic solution to common skincare concerns. The results are immediate, and the benefits are long-term. Let yourself be pampered and rejuvenated with this amazing facial massage that reduces puffiness and combats fine lines and dark circles.

Awakening the Inner Healer: Restoring Flow Through Shamanic Energy Work

“These intuitive songs help integrate and calm the energy, bridging movement and stillness. Many patients describe this as deeply soothing, like being sung back into balance.”
—Dr. Brian Ruggiero, DC

Every day, I meet patients seeking relief from pain—tight shoulders, sore backs, migraines, or exhaustion. Yet as we talk, it often becomes clear that what’s hurting isn’t only the body. Beneath the discomfort are deeper layers—grief, fear, or long-held stress—that have quietly settled into the nervous system. These hidden burdens can create energetic blockages that drain vitality and prevent true healing. Recognizing this, I began offering shamanic energy work to help people restore flow and reconnect with their natural ability to heal—body, mind, and spirit.

Shamanic medicine, one of humanity’s oldest healing traditions, teaches that true health depends on harmony between the physical, emotional, and energetic aspects of life. When that balance is disturbed by trauma, stress, or disconnection, our natural life force becomes blocked or depleted. Shamanic energy work helps reopen that flow through rhythm, sound, and focused intention, allowing patients to release stagnation, regain clarity, and experience peace.

Core Shamanism

My training through the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, founded by anthropologist Michael Harner, author of The Way of the Shaman and Cave and Cosmos: Shamanic Encounters with Another Reality, focuses on Core Shamanism—nondrug techniques such as rhythmic drumming and journeying to access spiritual guidance and awaken inner strength.

Each session begins with divination—a quiet, intuitive process of connecting with compassionate healing spirit allies to receive guidance beyond the five senses. This “hidden information,” as Michael Harner describes it, reveals what kind of healing is needed and which tools will best restore balance.

From there, I often begin with the drum, whose deep rhythmic beat mirrors the heartbeat of the Earth. Its vibration moves through the body, awakening energy, grounding the spirit, and bringing a sense of calm renewal. Patients often describe sensations of warmth, lightness, or deep release as their bodies begin to flow again.

I also use rattles to stir and loosen stagnant energy. Their crisp, percussive rhythm helps break up dense emotions that often collect in the chest, abdomen, or joints. Once this energy begins to shift, I may perform extraction work—a gentle process of removing lingering blockages or intrusions that no longer serve the individual. These can stem from old pain, fear, or limiting beliefs carried long after their purpose has ended. Extraction clears space for new light, power, and vitality to flow in, leaving the person feeling lighter, clearer, and more at peace.

Sometimes, spontaneous singing arises during a session—tones and sounds that carry vibration and healing intention into the body’s energy field. These intuitive songs help integrate and calm the energy, bridging movement and stillness. Many patients describe this as deeply soothing, like being sung back into balance.

Soul Retrieval

In deeper sessions, we may engage in soul retrieval, calling back aspects of the self that were lost through trauma or heartbreak. These parts often carry joy, creativity, and courage. When they return, patients frequently say they feel whole again—like something essential has been restored.

This work isn’t about mysticism; it’s about awareness, presence, and connection. My role is not to fix but to help people remember their own capacity to heal. As energy begins to move, breath deepens, posture softens, and pain diminishes. What follows is often a renewed sense of peace, purpose, and self-trust.

Shifts in energy and awareness can be profound. Grounding practices such as mindful breathing and gentle movement allow the body to absorb the healing and translate it into lasting transformation. This period of reflection also invites new insights, clarity, and gratitude to surface, deepening the connection between inner healing and outer experience.

Shamanic energy work often opens a doorway, and each session reveals another layer of self-awareness, guiding you toward greater balance. Over time, relationships, work, and sense of purpose may naturally shift as well. If you’ve been feeling heavy, disconnected, or uncertain, know that healing is possible. Through rhythm, sound, and light, shamanic energy work helps clear what no longer serves you and restores your natural flow. When that flow returns, you don’t just feel better—you come home to yourself.

Methylene Blue: A Forward-Thinking Integrative Agent in Cancer Care

“MB

accepts electrons from NADH and donates them directly to cytochrome c, effectively bypassing the blocked or dysfunctional complex I/III segments often exploited by tumors.”

—Dr.

Yvette M. Whitton, ND, MS

For over a century, methylene blue (MB) has been used as a safe, FDA-approved medication for conditions ranging from methemoglobinemia to urinary tract infections. Today, an exciting body of laboratory and early clinical research suggests that MB may also be a valuable ally in the fight against cancer. Far from a fringe concept, this interest stems from MB’s unique ability to influence fundamental processes that cancer cells rely on to survive and spread.

How Methylene Blue Disrupts Cancer Cell Metabolism

Cancer cells thrive on altered energy production— known as the “Warburg effect”—where they preferentially generate energy through glycolysis even in the presence of oxygen. Methylene blue acts inside the mitochondria (the cell’s power plants) to redirect electron flow within the electron transport chain. Specifically, MB accepts electrons from NADH and donates them directly to cytochrome c, effectively bypassing the blocked or dysfunctional complex I/III segments often exploited by tumors.

This electron “shunt” has two key consequences:

•Normalized oxidative metabolism: MB forces cancer cells away from glycolysis and toward oxidative phosphorylation, a less favorable environment for rapid tumor growth.

• Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS): By mildly increasing mitochondrial ROS, MB can trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death)

in malignant cells while sparing normal tissue, which has more robust antioxidant defenses. These mitochondrial effects are particularly relevant to cancers where metabolic reprogramming drives progression, such as glioblastoma, melanoma, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers.

Antioxidant and Redox Modulation

While methylene blue can stimulate ROS in cancer cells, it also functions as a redox mediator, cycling between oxidized (MB) and reduced (leucomethylene blue) forms. In healthy tissues, this redox cycling supports antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase, protecting non-malignant cells from collateral oxidative damage. This dual action—pro-oxidant in cancer cells, antioxidant in normal cells—is a striking example of therapeutic selectivity.

Targeting Signaling Pathways

Beyond its mitochondrial effects, methylene blue influences several cancer-relevant signaling pathways:

• NF-κB inhibition: MB suppresses the NF-κB pathway, which cancer cells often use to evade immune detection and resist apoptosis.

• mTOR/AMPK modulation: By affecting AMPK activation and downstream mTOR signaling, MB can slow tumor cell growth and sensitize tumors to caloric restriction or metformin-like metabolic interventions.

•STAT3 downregulation: Preclinical data show MB dampens STAT3, a key driver of proliferation and immune evasion in breast, pancreatic, and head-and-neck cancers.

Cancers Showing the Greatest Promise

Early laboratory and pilot clinical work highlights several tumor types where methylene blue’s mechanisms align well with disease biology:

• Brain tumors (glioblastoma, astrocytoma): MB crosses the blood–brain barrier and has been shown to inhibit hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), a key survival pathway in gliomas.

•Melanoma: MB promotes apoptosis and impairs migration, with added potential as a photodynamic agent.

•Breast and prostate cancers: By modulating estrogen receptor signaling and suppressing NF-κB/STAT3, MB may help slow progression and enhance sensitivity to conventional therapies.

•Colorectal cancer: MB’s impact on mitochondrial function and AMPK/mTOR signaling supports its integration with dietary and metabolic strategies.

Dosage and Routes of Administration

Clinical studies and historical data provide a safe dosing window. Typical oral doses used for neurodegenerative or infectious conditions range from 0.5–2 mg/kg per day, with anti-cancer protocols often starting at the lower end and titrating carefully. Methylene blue is well absorbed orally, achieves good systemic distribution, undergoes hepatic metabolism, and is excreted through the urinary system (bladder).

Intravenous (IV) administration, typically at 1–2 mg/kg in 50–100 mL of saline infused over 30–60 minutes, yields a higher and more immediate plasma concentration. This allows more direct mitochondrial penetration and rapid redox cycling —potentially advantageous for acute tumor targeting or peri-operative oxidative support.

Key Differences in Mechanism

Oral MB provides steady-state systemic redox modulation, supporting long-term mitochondrial health and anti-inflammatory effects.

IV MB delivers a sharper, transient oxidative pulse and higher mitochondrial uptake, which may be preferable when a pro-apoptotic effect is desired (e.g., before surgery or alongside chemotherapy or photodynamic therapy).

Both forms are typically well tolerated; mild side effects include temporary blue urine or stool and, rarely, serotonin interaction if combined with certain antidepressants.

Integration with Conventional and Metabolic Therapies

Methylene blue’s ability to bypass mitochondrial blocks and generate targeted ROS suggests strong synergy with therapies that either damage DNA (such as radiation and certain chemotherapies) or stress tumor metabolism (such as ketogenic diets, intermittent fasting, or metformin). Early animal data and case reports show improved tumor control when MB is layered with these approaches. Because MB is inexpensive, widely available, and FDA-approved for other indications, it offers a low-barrier, evidence-informed adjunct for patients seeking integrative strategies.

Methylene blue is more than a century-old dye; it is a modern redox medicine with the potential to reshape cancer care. By simultaneously correcting mitochondrial dysfunction, modulating redox balance, and suppressing key oncogenic pathways like NF-κB, mTOR, and STAT3, MB creates a hostile environment for cancer cells while protecting healthy tissue. Both oral and IV administration have unique advantages, making methylene blue a flexible tool to complement standard treatments and metabolic interventions.

As research progresses—from cell cultures to controlled clinical trials—methylene blue stands out as a forward-thinking, patient-centered option for those seeking to optimize outcomes in their cancer journey.

The Gentle Power of Reiki: Finding Balance and Healing in the Seasons of Life

We all go through difficult seasons in our lives. It’s part of being human—none of us is exempt from pain, sadness, or loss. Some of us may lose a loved one or even a part of ourselves because of unhealed emotional wounds. Others may face the loss of a job, a relationship, or even receive a medical diagnosis that shakes up their inner and outer world. In these challenging seasons, we are often overwhelmed by mixed emotions, which naturally lead us to question many aspects in our lives.

When Questions Arise

We question why we are faced with such a difficult challenge, loss, or battle that we think we can never overcome. We may continue to question why we have to experience pain, sadness, or loss at all. We reflect on what we could have done differently, or how we might have chosen a different path for ourselves—physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Then, after all these mixed emotions arise, we wonder how we can possibly navigate through our challenges. This is where a Reiki practitioner can gently guide and assist you in moving through your difficult seasons.

The Discovery of Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy-healing technique that has been used since the early 1900s, helping to balance and realign the mind, body, and spirit. This gentle, hands-on or hands-off technique was discovered by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui, who studied traditional Chinese and Western medicine, psychology, theology, various spiritual belief systems, and metaphysical concepts. The culmination of his studies eventually led Usui to undertake twenty-one days of fasting and prayer on Mount Kurama in Japan. It was during this time that he discovered Reiki and its healing benefits.

Where Is Reiki Practiced?

Since Usui’s time, Reiki has spread throughout the world. Reiki is practiced in wellness centers, offered in group sessions, and is available through private practices. It is also expanding in hospital settings, where it is offered alongside conventional medicines as a complementary treatment.

Benefits of Reiki

Some of Reiki’s benefits include easing patients’ worries or anxieties before or after surgery, reducing side effects such as nausea or discomfort from cancer treatments, and lowering physical pain, which can decrease the need for pain medications. It also promotes relaxation of the body and mind, supports better sleep, and encourages the body’s natural healing abilities. One of Reiki’s greatest and most unique gifts is its accessibility. It is available to anyone, regardless of age, background, or belief system. Even our beloved pets can benefit from receiving Reiki treatments.

Finding Peace in Every Season

Life will inevitably bring us seasons of loss, challenges, and battles. Yet within these seasons, Reiki can offer a pathway to balance and inner peace. It reminds us that true healing is not only about our physical bodies but also nurturing our hearts, quieting our minds, and strengthening our spirits so we can face our challenges and battles with confidence and clarity.

As Reiki continues to grow—whether it’s alongside medical care in hospitals, in group sessions, or through private practices—Reiki reassures us that no matter what season we are in, healing is always possible, and the peace and connection we seek are always within reach.

“It reminds us that true healing is not only about our physical bodies but also nurturing our hearts, quieting our minds, and strengthening our spirits so we can face our challenges and battles with confidence and clarity.”

The Future of Breast Wellness: Understanding Breast Thermography

When“By capturing these heat patterns, thermography creates a realtime picture of how blood flow, hormones, and inflammation interact beneath the surface.”
—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

it comes to women’s health, early awareness and prevention are powerful. For decades, the conversation around breast health has focused on detecting disease after it appears. But what if there were a way to look deeper, beyond structure, into the body’s physiology to identify subtle changes that may signal imbalance long before symptoms arise? This is the foundation of breast thermography, an advanced screening technology that visualizes heat and vascular patterns on the body’s surface. It offers insight into breast health from a unique and holistic perspective, allowing women to take a more active role in their wellness journey.

What Is Breast Thermography?

Breast thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is a noninvasive, radiationfree screening method that measures the body’s natural thermal emissions. Using a high-resolution infrared camera, it captures detailed thermal images of the breasts and surrounding areas. Because inflammation, hormonal activity, and circulatory changes influence temperature, thermography provides valuable information about the body’s underlying physiology. Rather than identifying structural abnormalities, it focuses on how the body is functioning, revealing subtle changes that often appear well before they can be detected through traditional imaging methods.

How It Works

The science behind thermography is both fascinating and empowering. Every person emits infrared energy from the skin’s surface, and this energy reflects underlying metabolic and vascular activity. By capturing these heat patterns, thermography creates a real-time picture of how blood flow, hormones, and inflammation interact beneath the surface.

During a thermography session, a series of infrared images is taken in a temperature-controlled environment. These images reveal the body’s unique thermal “fingerprint,” highlighting subtle asymmetries or areas of increased heat or coolness that may suggest inflammation, congestion, or hormonal imbalance. Because each woman’s physiology is distinct, these patterns serve as a personal baseline for ongoing monitoring and prevention.

The images are then analyzed by board-certified thermologists who specialize in interpreting temperature differentials and vascular patterns. They look for areas where heat or altered circulation may indicate physiological stress or early imbalance.

The true strength of thermography lies in its ability to track change over time. By comparing images year to year, practitioners can identify evolving trends and guide women toward proactive choices before issues develop.

Thermography’s perspective is dynamic rather than static. It reflects how your body is functioning today, offering a glimpse into your internal environment long before outward symptoms appear, making it a powerful ally in preventive health care.

A Window into Women’s Health

Breast tissue is highly responsive to hormonal fluctuations, inflammation, and circulatory changes. Thermography can reveal patterns in:

•Hormonal imbalance, such as estrogen dominance or cyclical breast tenderness

•Early vascular activity that may indicate increased metabolic demand

• Inflammatory responses that can precede structural change

•Lymphatic congestion that may affect detoxification and immune support

By identifying these patterns early, thermography helps women and their practitioners make informed, preventive choices.

Why Women Choose Thermography

Many women today are seeking ways to be more engaged and proactive in their health care. Thermography aligns beautifully with that philosophy, offering information, insight, and empowerment.

Women choose thermography because it is:

•Safe and gentle: no compression, radiation, or contact

•Insightful: reveals physiological changes years before structural imaging might

•Personalized: every woman’s thermal pattern is unique and trackable

• Holistic: reflects the influence of hormones, circulation, and lifestyle

•Empowering: transforms awareness into meaningful action

For women with dense breast tissue, implants, or those seeking a natural, preventive approach, thermography provides an added layer of clarity and confidence.

A Proactive Approach to Breast Health

The most powerful health decisions are those made before problems arise. Thermography embodies this preventive mindset, inviting women to shift from reaction to awareness.

Viewing your thermal images can deepen your connection to your body’s story. You can see how lifestyle choices, stress, diet, and hormonal balance influence your physiology. This awareness often becomes the spark for positive change.

A New Standard of Awareness

Breast thermography is redefining what it means to be proactive about health. It allows women to see beyond structure and understand the body’s natural language through heat, circulation, and balance. By observing these subtle physiological cues, women gain knowledge, direction, and peace of mind.

Thermography is more than technology; it’s a partnership between science and intuition, offering a deeper awareness of how to care for your body naturally and intelligently.

Breast thermography offers every woman what she deserves: clarity, confidence, and the power to take charge of her health on her own terms.

April Beaman, RDH, CTT, is a certified medical thermographer with the Professional Academy of Clinical Thermology and a professional member of Breast Thermography International. Beaman has worked in the wellness industry for over 15 years and provides medical thermal imaging for both women and men. She is the founder of CT Thermography located in Farmington, with satellite offices throughout CT and MA. Connect at 860.415.1150 or CTThermography.com.

Do We Really “Need” to Detox?

Dr. Zachary Moran, ND

“Approximately 2000 new chemicals are introduced into the U.S. commercial market each year, while global figures are much higher. The average American is exposed to thousands of chemicals and toxins in food, air, water, and the environment every day.”
—Dr. Zachary Moran, ND

The word “detox” has become a very common but often polarizing term. For some, it is viewed as a necessity for maintaining optimal health. For others, it’s a complete turn-off, knowing some will use it as a gimmick to sell a product or a program. As a naturopathic doctor who has studied extensively in environmental toxicology and human physiology, I can tell you that both are true. Detoxification is essential, now more than ever. But because of that, many people are exploiting it for profit and publicity. Navigating and understanding proper detoxification starts here.

We are designed to detox independently of expensive and intense therapies or procedures. Our liver, lymphatic system, immune system, cell membranes, and many other organ systems are designed to work synergistically to rid our bodies of toxins that we are exposed to daily. However, our resources to aid this detox system have reduced dramatically. General weight gain, increased medication use, sedentary lifestyles, inflammation, and poor health quality with less sleep, nutrition, hydration, sunlight, and so on, have led to an impaired detox system. At the same time, toxins accumulate more rapidly than ever before.

Increased Exposure to Toxins

Our exposure to toxins has grown dramatically over the past few decades, both in volume and in new exposures, making our detox system work overtime. Approximately 2000 new chemicals

are introduced into the U.S. commercial market each year, while global figures are much higher. The average American is exposed to thousands of chemicals and toxins in food, air, water, and the environment every day.

The main controversy of detoxification comes from understanding acute toxicity, like carbon monoxide poisoning, versus chronic accumulated toxicity, such as heavy metal or mold toxicity. Almost all research and testing is focused on acute toxicity that would cause immediate and life-threatening concern. Most daily toxic exposures are below thresholds of immediate concern, resulting in data showing “no harm” because they are only studied in the short term. But with chronic daily low-grade exposure, accumulation can eventually lead to severe chronic disease patterns.

A slow, undetected toxic exposure can cause significant harm. These toxicities will slowly accumulate in tissues, impairing normal cellular function, bringing patients to our clinic with symptoms of fatigue, lower mood status, chronic inflammation, weight gain, musculoskeletal pain, routine infections, and more. Toxicity also creates chronic inflammation, the root of all illness. Chronic inflammation creates significant stress, affecting energy, mood, hormones, fertility, immune function, weight gain, pain, and even predisposition to cancer.

Our exposures come from a variety of locations, and unfortunately, avoiding them all is impossible. But the more we can lighten the toxic burden, the

more effective our function and quality of life will be. Identifying sources in our food, water, air, and environment can be relatively simple and very effective. I often refer patients to the Environmental Working Group as a starting point for understanding where to reduce toxic exposures.

Help Your Body with the Detox Process

Our detox system is designed to excrete toxins through urine, stool, and sweat. We can enhance our detoxification tools using sauna for increased sweating capacity, massage and exercise for increased lymphatic drainage, colonics with bowel regularity, and nutrient IV therapies to support hydration and mitochondrial energy. Supplementation with herbs and vitamins can also support these detox strategies, including cellular detoxification.

Here at Roots, we use diagnostics to accurately identify the type and volume of toxins that have accumulated. Then we use a variety of therapies and procedures to help patients detox and reduce their toxic burden. It is a science-based approach to personalizing the need for detoxification.

Most of our patients at Roots are seeking care for chronic infections, chronic inflammatory diseases, chronic autoimmune diseases, cancer, and other conditions that don’t come from obvious causes. When we comprehensively investigate each patient’s health conditions, we often see a strong connection to high levels of toxicity. Because of this, we strongly advocate for routine, proactive detox through clean water, food, and air, along with routine sweating and bowel movements, while adding nutrition and hydration so we can live the cleanest and healthiest lifestyles.

Dr. Zach Moran of Roots Natural Medical Center is a board-certified and licensed naturopathic physician and has completed a medical residency program. He has an extensive research background and specializes in chronic infectious disease and environmental toxicity, which he believes to be at the core of most chronic diseases. Roots is a Naturopathic Medicinal Center that focuses on addressing foundational root causes of complex chronic diseases. The clinic aims to properly identify, diagnose, and treat patients with unexplained chronic illnesses. Our services are individualized and patient-focused, as medicine should be. “Stillness can surface emotions we’ve tucked away—grief, fatigue, longing. But winter asks us to trust the process of dormancy.”
—Haley Proto

The Wisdom of Winter: Slowing Down at the Solstice

As the days shorten and the air grows still, nature invites us to turn inward. The Winter Solstice—the longest night of the year—arrives not as an ending, but as a gentle pause. It’s the Earth’s deep breath in, the soft hush before spring’s renewal.

Winter’s Embrace

We live in a culture that rarely slows down. Even in December, when darkness falls early and animals retreat to conserve their energy, we often rush through shopping lists, to-do lists, and social obligations. Yet the Solstice reminds us that slowing down is not laziness; it’s wisdom. In winter, nature teaches us that rest is part of growth.

To “winter” is to embrace this rhythm—to soften, to listen, to stop pushing. It’s a season for tending the inner hearth: nourishing what’s been neglected, reflecting on what needs releasing, and honoring what’s been gained. Just as seeds rest unseen beneath the soil, much of our transformation happens in quiet spaces.

For many, this slowing feels uncomfortable at first. Stillness can surface emotions we’ve tucked away—grief, fatigue, longing. But winter asks us to trust the process of dormancy. To sit by the metaphorical fire and befriend the dark. In the stillness,

we hear the noise of what summer drowned out. Wintering might look like:

• Long walks without earbuds, just breathing the cold air.

• Lighting a candle at dusk and letting yourself sit in silence.

• Drinking tea slowly, without multitasking.

• Journaling about what you’re ready to release before the new year.

• Saying no—kindly, but firmly— when your body asks for rest.

Yoga and mindfulness can support this inward journey. Gentle, restorative practices mirror the body’s natural instinct to conserve energy. Yin poses, Yoga Nidra, or meditation can be ways to honor stillness without stagnation— ways to be present within the pause.

The Rhythm of the Seasons

There’s also wisdom in planning our lives by the rhythm of the seasons. Modern culture often pushes us to launch new projects and resolutions on January 1—right in the heart of winter. Yet if we look to nature as our guide, this is not the time for new beginnings. Nothing new is growing outside; everything is conserving, repairing, and gathering energy beneath the surface.

What if we did the same? What if winter were a season not for starting, but for listening? For letting ideas rest in the soil of imagination until the light returns? In our work and our lives, this could mean resisting the urge to take on new commitments, big plans, or major decisions. Instead, we might focus on reflection and refinement— evaluating what’s already in motion, allowing space for clarity to form before we plant anything new. Spring, then, is the time for action—for planting those well-considered seeds. Summer is the season of full expression and energy; autumn, for harvest and gratitude; and winter, for rest and integration. This cycle honors the truth that growth and renewal require balance— a rhythm of expansion and retreat.

In the heart of darkness, light begins its return. From this turning point, the days will slowly lengthen again—but there’s no rush. The Solstice reminds us that light grows gradually, tenderly. We, too, can allow ourselves to emerge slowly, without forcing our way into the next season.

As winter settles around us, may we honor it not as something to endure, but something to receive. May we learn from the trees that shed what no longer serves them, and trust in the promise of spring. Let this Solstice be a sacred invitation: to rest deeply, to listen inwardly, and to remember that even in the darkest moments, the light is already returning.

Please join me Sunday, December 21, for a Winter Solstice Yoga and Ritual-Stillness Within Event 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. at our lovely studio located in South Windham, CT. Register at mantraroomct.com.

Rooted in Renewal: Finding Stability as You Transform Your Home

Have you ever noticed how rearranging a room can make you feel a little off?

Grounding Through Transition

“Feel your feet connect to the floor and even visualize roots going down through that floor into the earth’s core. Plant yourself there.”
—MaryGrace Peak

Exhilarated, perhaps, but also oddly unsettled? You may move a sofa, repaint a wall, or begin a long-awaited renovation, only to find yourself feeling ungrounded, stressed, or highly emotional. There is a reason. When you move the items in your home or gut out entire rooms, you are definitely moving the energy, and your body feels it!

The Energetic Ripple of Change

Every space holds memory, and, over time, your home absorbs the imprint of life itself. Your laughter, rest, challenge, and renewal. When you make a change, even with the best intentions, those energies begin to stir and release.

For many people, this brings a rush of clarity and lightness. For others, it can surface as fatigue or anxiety. The body senses these movements long before the mind does. That is why, when you shift your space, it is critical to support your body through that process.

At a recent gathering with my Feng Shui mentor, a colleague shared a story: she moved her sofa at an angle the teacher suggested. Her spouse came home hours later, totally surprised and unsettled by the change. She recounted that he started shaking a bit, his nervous system going into overdrive. Nothing was physically “wrong” with the poor soul; his energy field was simply responding to the sudden shift. This story served as a powerful reminder to me on how the body and home are in constant dialogue, mirroring one another in subtle yet powerful ways.

Transformation, whether physical, emotional, or environmental, always begins with grounding. Before and after you make changes in your space, PAUSE. Feel your feet connect to the floor and even visualize roots going down through that floor into the earth’s core. Plant yourself there. Take slow, full breaths. Step outside for a moment and let the rhythm of nature recalibrate your senses. Bring grounding elements into your environment: wood, stone, soft earth tones, or living plants, or even a water fountain. These materials whisper steadiness to your nervous system. Light a candle, open a window, or simply stand still in gratitude for the shifts unfolding. Change is a beautiful current, but it moves quickly. Grounding invites the body to trust that movement, to find peace within the transformation.

Healing the Body and the Home

True transformation happens when both the person and the environment are supported. Many people focus on the outer aspects and aesthetics of the project: the paint colors, floor plans, furniture, and, of course, the budget. The home reflects the energy of the person who lives there. It is important to remember that each piece of furniture or act of renewal in the space should be met with a trust that this investment of time, energy, and dollars will yield the greatest rewards, such as inner peace and good health. This is not about Pinterest-perfect decor. It is about cultivating harmony that your body can feel.

Why Grounded Spaces Matter

A grounded space creates a grounded life. You can sense it the moment you enter a room that feels “just right.” Your breath deepens. Your shoulders release. There is a feeling of benevolence in the air and a vibration that steadies you.

When a home’s energy is balanced, it not only looks beautiful, but it also feels restorative. It supports you as you work, rest, and grow. It gives your body permission to return to its natural state of ease.

If you are in the midst of change—such as a renovation, relocation, or simply rearranging what you already have—remember to tend to yourself, too. Healing is not only about what you build, it is about what you become during the process.

Make sure to hold the space for transformation that nourishes both the environment and the soul. Create an interior that tells your inner story, one that helps the body feel grounded, the heart feel at peace, and the spirit feel at home. The same goes for your office. When your spaces change as you evolve, let it be an act of healing for the space, the spirit, and the body that lives within it. This welcomes opportunity and growth.

How Human Design Can Help Overcome Life’s Conditioning

A“Every one of us is influenced by conditioning – it’s simply a part of life. It is the undefined centers that are sensitive to outside stimulation, that absorb and amplify energy, leading to potential distortion.”
—April Goff Brown

s a reader of Natural Nutmeg , you are likely engaged in a personal development journey, seeking out different ways to evolve into your best self. Like you, I’ve explored a variety of resources, including yoga, oracle cards, biotuning, Reiki, essential oils, past life readings, crystals, and astrology. Each practice or experience brought me a piece of my puzzle, but what was most profound for me was Human Design—so much so that I became credentialed to bring it to others.

You have one main purpose in your life: to be you. Not a segment of you, or a masked you, but the truest, authentic self. Human Design helps you find your way there by uncovering your energetic blueprint.

Your blueprint tells you how you’re meant to be, where your strengths lie, your power, and your conditioning. It is this conditioning that takes us away from our perfection from birth.

The Centers of Human Design

There are nine centers in the Human Design chart. Some are defined, while others are undefined, or open. Each of us has a different configuration.

The undefined centers are prone to conditioning —the messages we receive beginning in childhood that create patterns, beliefs, and stories that disconnect us from our authentic being. Every one of us is influenced by conditioning—it’s simply a part of life. It is the undefined centers that are sensitive

to outside stimulation, that absorb and amplify energy, leading to potential distortion.

•The Head Center is where we receive our inspiration, where we have pressure to figure things out, to find answers. This can lead to worrying, agonizing self-doubt, and an endless quest for more information.

•The Ajna Center is a processing hub for all that inspiration. When undefined, it exemplifies an open and flexible mind. Conditioning can lead to obsessing about problems, feeling desperate, or leaning too heavily on others for answers.

• The Throat Center’s primary function is to verbalize and manifest thoughts and ideas. When undefined, we may not trust our voice because it is inconsistent in how we use it. Conditioning can lead to being fearful of expressing yourself, oversharing, exaggerating, or even blurting things out at inappropriate times.

•The Identity Center is where we hold our sense of self and feelings of lovability. A conditioned undefined center may leave you not knowing who you are and struggling to find your place, so you people-please.

• The Will Center is where we hold our willpower and self-worth. A conditioned undefined center may result in you becoming an overachiever, always trying to prove your worth, and seeking validation from outside yourself.

• The Sacral Center is the energy powerhouse in the chart. When undefined, your energy is not sustainable, and you require periods of rest. Conditioning may lead to not knowing when enough is enough, being submissive, over-giving, and not knowing how to say no.

• The Splenic Center is the center of instinct. When undefined, you may be prone to hoarding, hanging onto people and things long past their usefulness or healthiness. When conditioned, you may tolerate bad relationships, be risk-averse, and spend time focused on what’s lacking.

• The Solar Plexus Center holds our emotional wisdom. When undefined, you may be vulnerable to others’ moods and emotions, leading you to do whatever it takes to avoid confrontation. When conditioned, it can mean being hypervigilant, over-responsible, or even emotionally out of control.

• The Root Center is a pressure center for action. When undefined, stress is difficult, as is timing. When conditioned, you may overdo things, push yourself to get everything done no matter the cost, and never know when to stop.

When I work with you, we explore these centers and potential conditioning. Whether during individual sessions or in my Practical Human Design classes, you gain awareness and understanding that help you evolve along your personal development journey. Because, at the end of it all, your purpose is to be you, the full, complete, perfect you that you were born to be. I invite you to explore your Human Design with me. I’d love to guide you back to how you are meant to be.

How Your Health and Relationships Can Affect Your Business

When“You can’t thrive in business if you’re struggling personally or physically, nor can you fully enjoy success at the expense of your health or relationships. Integration is key.”
—Deirdre Tindall

most people think about running a business, they focus on strategy, marketing, finances, and productivity. Those pieces are certainly important—but there’s a deeper, often overlooked truth: your personal life and your health directly impact the success of your business.

As an entrepreneur running both a marketing agency and a Health, Life, and Business Coaching practice, I’ve observed a consistent pattern: business owners who prioritize their personal well-being tend to have greater clarity, creativity, and resilience in their ventures. Conversely, when health or personal life is neglected, it inevitably manifests in their work—often through burnout, impaired decision-making, or stagnating growth.

So, what’s the connection? Let’s break it down.

The Health–Business Connection

Your body is the foundation of everything you do. You can have the best business plan in the world, but without the energy, focus, and stamina to bring it to life, it won’t go far.

• Energy levels fuel productivity. When you’re eating well, sleeping enough, and moving your body regularly, you show up with sharper focus and greater efficiency. Skipping meals, burning the candle at both ends, or sitting for long stretches will drain your creativity and slow you down.

• Stress management is essential. Running a business comes with pressure and challenges. If you don’t have tools to manage stress— whether through exercise, mindfulness, or

other practices—it can take a toll on your mental and physical health, and eventually on your business performance.

• Resilience comes from well-being. Healthy habits create a strong foundation, so when setbacks happen (and they will), you have the physical and mental reserves to bounce back.

In short: Taking care of your health isn’t only self-care—it’s a business strategy.

The Personal Life–Business Connection

Just as your health affects your business, your personal life plays a major role, too.

• Relationships matter. When your personal relationships are supportive and strong, they provide encouragement and stability. But when they’re strained, the stress and distraction can spill into your work, making it hard to focus.

• Mindset is shaped at home. How you feel about yourself, your self-worth, and your boundaries often begins outside the office. If you struggle with confidence in your personal life, it may hold you back from taking bold steps in your business.

• Work-life balance keeps you sustainable. If your personal life is constantly neglected for the sake of work, resentment and burnout eventually follow. A fulfilling personal life gives you perspective, joy, and the mental space to return to your business refreshed. The truth is, your business is not separate from your life—it’s an extension of it.

Why Integration Matters

You can’t thrive in business if you’re struggling personally or physically, nor can you fully enjoy success at the expense of your health or relationships. Integration is key. When health, personal life, and business align, they strengthen each other:

•A healthier you builds stronger leadership.

•A balanced personal life makes business sustainable.

•A thriving business provides resources to nurture well-being and relationships.

This is the core philosophy I bring to Your Wellness Circle—helping clients create balance across their health, their personal lives, and their businesses.

Practical Steps Toward Alignment

Creating harmony between your health, personal life, and business doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul—it starts with awareness and intentional action. Begin by auditing your current routines: Are you consistently fueling your body with nutritious meals, carving out time for rest, and setting aside moments for connection? It’s about building habits that support—not compete with—your business goals.

Bringing It All Together

Pushing through business challenges while neglecting your health or personal needs may work in the short term, but it isn’t sustainable. Eventually, the imbalance catches up. The good news? Small shifts—like prioritizing rest, spending quality time with loved ones, or setting clear work-life boundaries—can create powerful ripple effects. You’ll become clearer, more energized, and inspired. Remember: Your business thrives only as much as you do.

Rolfing®: Clear Your Body’s Clutter

“I see people continuing bad habits that have stayed with them over the years, creating movement patterns that inhibit the way they move, cause pain, create chronic injuries, and lessen their physical freedom.”
—Sharon Sklar

Clutter is something we all deal with as we navigate endless mailings, keepsakes, and things we buy. I was meticulous about my home when I first moved in, but over time, I collected papers on the chair, on the corner of the table, and in bags under the window. After COVID, I really needed to deal with my clutter because the piles were changing my social life.

Two years ago, I decided to earnestly examine my issues with the constant accumulation and never-ending piles that somehow limited my freedom to live as I wanted. Now, I am so much better! I buy less and keep up with the endless mailings that solicit my money and attention. With less clutter, I have a greater sense of calm.

Declutter Your Body

In my work as a Rolfer, I see how our bodies, too, accumulate clutter over time as we hold onto injuries, stressors, or traumas we don’t release. We accumulate tissue thickness as a response to the assaults our bodies endure, lessening our freedom, our flexibility, and our basic function. You may call it aging; I call it imbalance.

Rolfing® is the art and science of body change. Through the ten-session series of direct manipulation of the body’s connective tissue, we release the thickened fascia, which has diminished the body’s natural muscular function. This release allows greater flexibility, more efficient muscle use, and increased range of motion. We feel better, we move better, we look better.

In my forty-five years as a Rolfer, I have seen much of how body clutter diminishes our everyday movements. I see people age before their time. I see people continuing bad habits that create inhibiting movement patterns and chronic injuries, cause pain, and lessen their physical freedom.

Posture Is Key

On a recent trip to New York City, I saw countless people waiting, leaning against a building, looking at their cellphones with their heads almost at a 90-degree angle. Over time, this forward head posture will precipitate neck pain, headaches, reduced mobility, and shoulder droop, with associated upper body pain. The fascia will thicken, inhibiting natural muscular movement.

Notice how kids sit, all slumped over with no inner support. Then think that for six or seven hours a day, they sit like that in school. When they are young enough, they can run around at recess, but the pattern is there—slumping forward with no structural base. It will catch up to them over time. We can get rid of this body clutter by first acknowledging that a change must be made. Our old body patterns no longer work, and we search for something to break the cycle and restore order. Many of my clients have tried massage, chiropractic, or other modalities in search of solutions but have experienced short-lived results.

Over the ten-session series of Rolfing®, we work layer by layer, piece by piece, to unstick the fascial thickening and restore proper muscular function. The hands-on bodywork lasts about an hour, and educational homework is given to help embody the new space created. Learning how to use your body is key to the work becoming more permanent.

Consider how you feel when your home is freshly cleaned and in order. Everything has its place. Now, think that you can achieve this physically because you can undo much of the chaos that comes with years of injuries, bad posture, and trauma. Rolfing® is all about this. Freedom awaits.

Sharon Sklar is in her 45th year of private practice as a Certified Advanced Rolfer. She has been voted one of Natural Nutmeg’s 10BEST Bodyworkers for the last seven years and is very grateful for that confidence and support. Sharon works with direct manipulation of the soft tissue of the body and movement re-education over a ten-session series to help her clients feel freer, get more balanced, and reduce chronic pain. Great for athletes, children, and adults recovering from the stress, injuries, or traumas of life. Inquiries are encouraged! State licensed.
