PRESIDENT'S REPORT

President’s Report By Marty Lorick, NATM President In February, the light- and medium-duty trailer industry was finally able to come together for our annual Convention & Trade Show. The show held in Tampa was a great success and indicative of the vital role that the event plays in sourcing supplies, components, and services for trailer manufacturers. Thank you to all those that attended. It was great to see everyone in-person once again! A very big thank you to our 2022 sponsors. Without the support of the companies that sponsor the Convention & Trade Show, NATM could not put such an event together at reasonable rates for attendees. Providing education and a forum for growing relationships and reinvesting in existing ones is one of the many vital programs NATM provides for the industry. In-person education offers a unique opportunity to ask questions of experienced professionals and grow from the input of industry peers in a way written instruction does not. In addition, seeing the latest products in the industry and meeting with nearly 180 vendors all in one place presents tremendous cost and time savings for trailer manufacturers. New this year was the inclusion of trailer dealers for the first time! NATM welcomed its Dealer Affiliates to the show with the New Attendee Promotion that offered two complimentary full registrations, two complimentary spouse/partner registrations, and two complimentary room nights. In addition, dealers were able to shop the trade show floor and attend a specially curated Dealer Workshop Lineup that featured information on axles, brakes, and sales. The NATM Staff also educated attendees about the NATM Compliance Verification Program how best to market the NATM Decal to their customers.

as affiliates in the Association. As part of the Association’s continuing efforts to improve consumer knowledge of trailer safety, the Association will hold Trailer Safety Week June 5-11, 2022. Trailer Safety Week is a national awareness campaign that aims to educate end-users on trailer safety, including safe towing practices and maintenance. NATM encourages all members companies to participate in this year’s Trailer Safety Week at whatever level of engagement they feel comfortable. Please consider signing up to be a Trailer Safety week Ally and sharing the official TSW Communications Kit. This pre-crafted kit includes social and blog posts, readyto-use graphics, and banner ads for the website. Or, take it a step further by being a Trailer Safety Partner or Champion. Visit www.TrailerSafetyWeek.com/interest to sign up. For more information about participating in TSW this year, turn to page 14. NATM is only successful thanks to the hardworking trailer manufacturers, suppliers, and dealers that are committed to safety and compliance. If you are interested in becoming more involved or interested in learning more about becoming a member, do not hesitate to contact the Association at NATMHQ@natm.com. ■

It was fantastic to welcome the dealers to the event. I’m looking forward to growing the NATM Dealer Affiliate program and increasing the attendance of dealers at the Convention & Trade Show. I am issuing a challenge to all members to encourage your dealers to join NATM for $150 annually. Or even better, sign your dealers up as Dealer Affiliates on their behalf to ensure that your network of dealers receives essential resources. By signing up your dealers for only $150, they will qualify for over $1,200 worth of benefits through the NATM New Attendee Promotion at the Convention & Trade Show, plus printed resources to help their dealership succeed. Interested in signing up more than five dealerships? Contact NATM for bulk discount pricing at NATMHQ@natm.com. For more information about the NATM Dealer Affiliate Program, turn to page 28. For more information about the 2022 Convention & Trade Show, turn to page 36. Are you looking forward to the next big event? Turn to page 48 for details on the upcoming 2023 Convention & Trade Show in Fort Worth, Texas Feb. 1416, 2022. For more information about the event, including exhibiting and sponsoring, contact NATM Assistant Director Meghan Ryan and Meghan.Ryan@natm.com. Dealers play a crucial role in communicating trailer safety to end-users, which is why NATM welcomed them to participate 4

Headquarters REPORT

M AY/ J U N E 2 0 2 2

By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director

With the year nearing the halfway mark, NATM is taking stock of both what it has accomplished thus far and the work that remains to be done. The 2022 Convention was a smashing success, with record-breaking trailer manufacturer attendance and trailer dealers being allowed to participate for the first time in history. Seeing the industry back together again and celebrating award winners, see more on page 36, was a highlight for the year. Feedback for the event was overwhelmingly positive with some exhibitors already excitedly sharing their plans for 2023. Mark your calendars now for February 14-16, 2023 in Fort Worth, Tx.! As always, a special thank you to our 2022 sponsors who make the Convention possible. In late 2021, NATM added two new staff members to our team, Alex Stowe and Aaron Langer. Alex joined NATM as Technical Director, with a juris doctor and a background in compliance, Alex has already been a fantastic addition to the team. Aaron joined NATM as a third Compliance Consultant and his trailer knowledge allowed him to take quickly to the Compliance Verification Program. You can learn more about Alex and Aaron on page 20. Our compliance team is rounded out by out Compliance Manager Scott Crimmins and Senior Compliance Consultant Sean Sloan. The NATM technical staff continue to be top tier and spend countless hours supporting members outside the compliance consultation process. As always, we encourage members and non-members alike to reach out to our team at any time. Final preparations for Trailer Safety Week June 5th – 11th is underway. In collaboration with member companies across the country, NATM is working to have a gubernatorial proclamation made in each state recognizing the value and importance of Trailer Safety Week for roadways users. NATM will also be launching new video content to support end-users in the safe and proper use of their trailers as well as educate end-users and dealers on the importance of the NATM decal in roadway safety. It’s not too late to join the movement! Allyship is as easy as copy and paste. Learn more on page 16.

safety, but advocating for opportunities for support of those initiatives as well as the need for large-scale support to improve workforce development and close the skills gap is key to the long-term success of the industry. You can learn more about the event and how to get involved on page 10. In July, the NATM Board of Directors will participate in the triennial strategic planning process. While NATM’s existing Strategic Plan vastly expanded Trailer Safety Week, saw the introduction of trailer dealers to the Association, saw the launch of a new online store, and expanded and improved NATM’s Compliance Verification Program, the Association is poised to yet again set course for tremendous improvement and value-add. If you have any feedback as to where you would like to see NATM going in the next 3 years, please don’t hesitate to reach out to NATM Executive Director Kendra Ansley at Kendra.Ansley@natm.com. The Association has further begun an overhaul, transitioning its member database and website to a new provider. Soon, NATM members, prospective members, and other interested parties will find a more user-friendly and up-to-date website. Advertisers can also expect better metrics for their reach as well as increased exposure with a more functional site. As NATM’s membership continues to expand, including an expanded dealer affiliate base, member companies receive competitive advertising pricing with a growing industry reach. To find out more about the advertising opportunities available, visit www.NATM.com/advertising. The year ahead is full of promise and opportunity. NATM Committees, the Board, and Staff are hard at work to bring members more of what they need to grow and prosper. If you have any feedback for the Association or would like to get more involved, please reach out at (785) 272-4433 or at NATMHQ@natm.com. ■

NATM’s Government Affairs Committee is excited to return to an in-person Regulatory Roundup June 14th and 15th in Washington, D.C. Gearing Up for Trailer Safety Week By Brody Garland, K&L Gates June means different things to different people: the changing of seasons, the warming of weather, the promise of summer vacations to come. But to those in the trailer industry, June also means the return of Trailer Safety Week. Established by the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers in 2018, the Trailer Safety Week safety education initiative was created to improve the safety of the Nation’s roadways by raising trailer safety awareness through education of end-users, dealers, and manufacturers on safe trailering practices. The annual nationwide awareness campaign is specifically aimed at: increasing awareness of the importance of being committed to trailer safety; educating end-users about proper trailer maintenance and usage; and creating a stronger partnership and alliance between stakeholders of the industry including trailer dealers, manufacturers, and end-users. End-users are vastly under-educated on the proper use of trailers, and it is crucial to utilize the connections that dealers and manufacturers have with consumers in order to raise awareness of proper towing techniques and maintenance. A coordinated nationwide effort has been the goal of the industry since its inception.

In 2021, Trailer Safety Week included the participation of more than 300 allies, champions, and partners, representing industry, law enforcement, state agencies, and more. Since the inception of the initiative, these efforts have reached more than 500,000 individuals across the country. Trailer Safety Week continues to expand its reach, partnering with industry stakeholders to find more ways to educate the public on the importance of proper trailer usage. With millions of trailers traversing the nation’s roadways every day and being used by businesses, local governments, and individuals for recreational purposes it is crucial to ensure that trailers are being towed safely for the sake of everyone on the roads. As NATM’s Trailer Safety Week enters its fifth year, the industry looks forward to finding new ways to get out their unified message, and expand their reach further across the country. ■

Improving trailer safety takes the collective effort of industry partners, agencies, and end-users. Trailer Safety Week, which will run from June 5-11 this year, utilizes printed and online resources to guide trailer manufacturers, dealers, traffic safety professionals, and endorsers across the nation in promoting better safety practices. Trailer Safety Week was created in 2018 as a forum to educate the public on how to properly utilize trailer safety features and comply with safer towing techniques. Many consumers are new to towing trailers, perhaps having purchased their first boat, while others may utilize their trailers infrequently. It is critical to utilize the connections that dealers and manufacturers have with consumers in order to raise awareness of proper towing techniques and maintenance in order to keep America’s roadways safe.

NATM Assigns Committees for 2022 By Kendra Ansley, NATM The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers is a not-for-profit directed entirely by its membership base and their elected representatives. NATM’s Committees serve a vital function in guiding the work of the Association. Committee members support the adaptation and evolution of the Association while seeing to it that the strategic vision established by the Board of Directors is being carried out. Committee volunteers signed up in record-breaking numbers in 2022. With more than 100 individuals signed up to serve, nine committees with specific goals were established by the Executive Committee. These nine committees are Compliance, Convention, Dealers, Education, Finance, Government Affairs, Membership, Technical, and Technology. Meeting from monthly to quarterly, these committees will be tackling big goals in 2022. These include, but are not limited to;

Updating NATM’s Generic Owner’s Manuals

Developing a plan for the incorporation of Incomplete Vehicle Manufacturers in the Compliance Verification Program

Reviewing and updating NATM’s Investment and Reserves policies to ensure the Association is both prepared for the future and reinvesting in members today.

Searching for a new location of the NATM Convention along the East Coast

Open Invitation to June Regulatory Roundup & Capitol Hill Visits By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

NATM has set the dates for the 2022 Regulatory Roundup & Capitol Hill events in Washington, D.C. for June and welcomes members across the nation to participate. The Capitol Hill Visits will take place in-person all day Tuesday June 14, and the Regulatory Roundup speaker lineup will be held the morning of Wednesday, June 15. Along with the Convention & Trade Show, this is one of NATM’s most important events of the year. The NATM Regulatory Roundup and Capitol Hill Visits are hosted in-person in Washington, D.C. and play a pivotal role in improving legislators’ knowledge of the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. New this year, the event will be split into two separate days to allow for participants to spend a full day on Capitol Hill to meet with Members of Congress. During the Capitol Hill Visits, teams disperse to visit with three to four congressional offices. Teams are comprised of two to four participants with an experienced team leader. Handout materials and talking points are provided to each participant, along with educational materials to share with the Senator, Representative and/or their staff. This is a great opportunity for members to learn more about what is going on in the industry, as well as build positive relationships with those that are regulating the industry. NATM Members in key districts will be contacted to attend in order to have a constituent present at the meetings. NATM’s long-term approach to, and investments in, government relations continue to pay dividends to the Association and its members. Legislative and regulatory 10

enactments are important and beneficial to NATM, but preventative activities are perhaps more important from NATM’s perspective. The Association has been successful on both counts. The current government relations program is strong and maintaining a steady course will continue to provide tremendous value to NATM members. Expanding the participation at the Regulatory Roundup and Capitol Hill Visits will help build on that success and help NATM educate Members of Congress about the trailer manufacturing industry. The Regulatory Roundup will be held at the K&L Gates Offices in Washington D.C. and feature expert speakers on the topics of trade, tariffs, government affairs, and more. During previous Regulatory Roundups, attendees have heard from Congressional staffers, officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and experts from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). If you would like more information about participating in the 2022 Regulatory Roundup and Capitol Hill Visits, contact NATM Executive Director Kendra Ansley at Kendra.Ansley@natm.com or (785) 272-4433. ■

NATM Hires Alex Stowe as Technical Director NATM is excited to announce that Alex Stowe joined the staff as technical director in November. As technical director, Stowe oversees all technical programs and committees of the Association. He works directly with the executive director to evaluate regulatory and technical issues applicable to the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. Stowe received his Juris Doctorate with a concentration in business transactions from the University of Nebraska College of Law. His background in compliance stems from experience working in highly regulated areas where he was responsible for regulation interpretation, violation summary reporting, and reviewing regulations relating to NCAA bylaws and HIPAA compliance. In his free time, he volunteers with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and enjoys traveling with his fiancée, Abby, and their three dogs. As the technical director, Alex is responsible for oversight of the compliance, technical and technology committees, as well as the compliance verification program. He looks forward to promoting trailer safety by keeping NATM’s members informed about compliance with regulations, industry standards and best practices, and by connecting members with valuable education and resources. “I am excited for the opportunity to collaboratively work with members and assist with questions relating to trailer compliance” said Alex. Welcome Alex to the Association by phone at (785) 272-4433 or by email, Alex.Stowe@natm.com.

NATM Hires New Compliance Consultant Aaron Langer NATM is pleased to announce that Aaron Langer joined the staff as a compliance consultant in October. As the newest NATM Compliance Consultant, Langer conducts compliance verification consultations for trailer manufacturers to verify members have the manufacturing processes in place to manufacture trailers in compliance with NATM. This position also has the responsibility of assisting members in correcting any compliance deficiencies. Aaron brings firsthand experience as a trailer user and welder with his background in construction and the Kansas Department of Transportation. Langer loves spending time with his beautiful wife René and two dogs. He also considers himself an avid golfer, and enjoys all time spent outdoors. Rear Impact Guard Updates Alex Stowe, NATM Technical Director

22

May/June 2022

www.NATM.com

E D U C AT I O N

The Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration have updated requirements relating to rear impact guards by adding rear impact guards to the list of items that must be inspected annually on commercial motor vehicles, further labeling requirements for rear impact guards have been updated.

Annual Inspection of Commercial Motor Vehicles Update Who this applies to: The change in the annual inspection requirement applies to Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). The Department of Transportation defines a Commercial Motor Vehicle as any towed vehicle used in interstate commerce which :1) has GVWR of 4,536 kg (10,0001 pounds) or more, 2) is used to transport more than 8 passengers for compensation, 3) is designed or to transport 15 or more passengers but is not used for transporting passengers for compensation, or 4) is used to transport materials found by the Secretary of Transportation to be hazardous under federal law.

What changes have been made: Commercial Motor Vehicles are already required to undergo an annual inspection and keep documentation of meeting the minimum inspection standards. Previously, the annual inspection focused on the following areas: Brake systems; Coupling devices; Exhaust systems; Fuel systems; Lighting devices; Loading safety; Steering mechanisms; Suspension; Vehicle frame; Tires; Wheels and rims; Windshield glazing; Windshield wipers; and Motorcoach seats. With the update made to the inspection requirements, a fifteenth item must now be inspected to ensure compliance with the requirements - rear impact guards. The inspection should ensure: 1. The rear impact guard is not missing; 2. The rear impact guard is securely attached;

TRACKS

3. That the rear impact guard does not extend past 100 mm (4 inches) of either side extremity of the vehicle; 4. That the rear impact guard is no more than 560 mm (22 inches) above the ground; 5. That the rear impact guard is no more than 305 mm (12 inches) forward of the rear extremity of the vehicle; and 6. That the rear impact guard shall have a cross sectional vertical height of at least 100 mm (4 inches) across its entire width.

Steps to take to ensure compliance: Any member or end consumer that currently operates commercial motor vehicles should ensure that their annual commercial motor vehicle inspection now includes a review of the six items listed above relating to rear impact guards. The NATM Compliance Verification Program does not cover annual commercial motor vehicle inspections. Further, the qualification as a commercial motor vehicle depends on the use of the trailer which may or may not be known by the manufacturer at the time of production. This information is being shared with the membership in an attempt to assist with awareness of the updated regulation.

Labeling of Rear Impact Guards Under the revised regulation relating to labeling of rear impact guards, the label required to be attached can now be placed on either the forward or rearward facing surface of the horizontal member of the guard. However, if a label is placed on the rearward facing portion of the guard it cannot interfere with any retroflective sheeting required to be included on the trailer. Members should ensure that any impact guards being attached to any trailer with a GVWR of 4,536 kg (10,000 pounds) or more includes a label on the forward-facing surface of the guard, 305 mm (12 inches) inboard of the right end of the guard. The label must include the impact guard manufacturer’s name and address, the date and month the guard was manufactured, and the letters “DOT” constituting a certification by the guard manufacturer that the guard conforms to all requirements of FMVSS No. 223. ■

Combination Stop, Turn and Tail Lamps and Rear Clearance Lamps Alex Stowe, NATM Technical Director

The NATM Compliance Team has received some questions recently from members relating to rear clearance lamps and whether or not a clearance lamp may be combined with a stop, turn and tail lamp to the meet the lamp requirements under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard’s (FMVSS) lamp regulations.

Short Answer: This would not be compliant under the FMVSS lamp regulations. The FMVSS lamp regulations specifically prohibit clearance lamps from being optically combined with any tail lamp. (FMVSS 571.108) A clearance lamp may be combined with a side marker lamp, if the lamp is installed at a 45° angle it must meet the correct SAE lens coding requirements, PC or PC2 lenses must be used for clearance and side marker lamps installed at a 45° angle whereas P2 or P3 lenses may be used when the light is flush against the trailer/fender .

Long Answer: Clearance lamps are defined by the FMVSS as “lamps which show the front or rear of the vehicle, mounted on the permanent structure of the vehicle as near as practicable to the upper left and right extreme edges to indicate the overall width and height of the vehicle.” Tail lamps are defined as “steady burning low intensity lamps used to designate the rear of a vehicle.” 24

March/April 2022

FMVSS §571.108 S6.3.3 specifically mentions that “No clearance lamp is permitted to be optically combined with any tail lamp.” The FMVSS lamp regulation also mentions “Combination clearance and side marker lamps are single lamps which simultaneously fulfill the requirements of clearance and side marker lamps.” Because of this language, the NATM lamp standard used in our compliance verification program also does not allow for a clearance lamp to be used in combination with a stop, turn and tail lamp. As mentioned above, the regulations do allow for clearance lamps to be combined with some other lamps, assuming location and bulb requirements can be met for the combined lamps, but the regulation specifically states that clearance lamps cannot be combined with any tail lamp. When looking to combine a clearance lamp with another lamp on a trailer, it is important to remember that clearance lamps must have the correct SAE lens coding. This lens coding is normally located either directly printed on the lens itself, or in documentation provided by your supplier. Rear clearance lamps either need to have lens code P2 or P3 for standalone clearance lamps, or lens code PC or PC2 for rear clearance lamps installed at a 45° angle on the vehicle. The clearance lamps must be mounted at the widest point of the trailer and as high as practicable. ■ www.NATM.com

NATM Board of Directors Tour U-Haul Facilities By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

In mid-October, U-Haul International®, Inc. opened its doors and welcomed the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers’ (NATM) Board of Directors to explore behind the scenes of a multi-billiondollar rental moving equipment company. Marco Garcia, Director of Engineering Services for U-Haul, currently serves as the NATM Board Treasurer and invited the entire board to visit the facilities to share some insight as to what goes into running such a large company, as well as the differences in operations as a rental company compared to the sales focus of most NATM member trailer manufacturer companies. “U-Haul Company’s hospitality for the board and NATM was overwhelming,” said NATM President Marty Lorick, President of Triple Crown Trailer. “It was great to tour two facilities and the wellness center to see how committed they are to the safety and health of employees. That same commitment shows in their products and services to the customers as well.”

The board first visited the Glendale Manufacturing Company (GMC) facility in Glendale, Ariz. Cedric Moore, plant president at GMC, lead the highly informational tour of the newer operations plant. The plant offers steel fabrication, welding, powder coating, and other operations that directly feed into the U-Haul production of trailers, tow dollies and U-Box® portable storage containers. Moore explained the importance and efficiency of vertically integrating nearly all steps of the steel fabrication, manufacturing, assembly and finishing under the umbrella of one parent company. Most impressive was the use of automation on the production floor which expedites the process and reduces the reliance on a limited workforce. Similar to all manufacturing industries, the company has struggled with the skilled workforce shortage. Automation has assisted 26

May/June 2022

in alleviating some of the challenges. The facility boasts two Salvagnini L3 Fiber Lasers offering computerized laser-cutting and automatic ordering of raw materials as stock runs low. It also works as a smart vending machine for all production material used in robotic welding and cutting. The facility also has six robotic units handling much of the welding workload while manual welding areas service more delicate assignments. The board then visited the U-Haul Technical Center in Tempe and toured the R&D, test lab, and manufacturing floor. U-Haul has come a long way since its inception in the summer of 1945. U-Haul co-founders L.S. “Sam” Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized a need for one-way trailer rentals and bought the first U-Haul trailers from welding shops, or secondhand from private owners. However, that strategy didn’t work. Many of the purchased trailers were unreliable, and there was no uniformity with repairs and general upkeep. So U-Haul quickly changed course and began building its own trailers – a process which it still follows to this day. U-Haul has grown to become the largest rental fleet in the do-it-yourself moving industry with more than 176,000 trucks, 126,000 trailers and 46,000 towing devices. With 77 years of experience in the trailer industry, U-Haul generously shared some of its expertise with the board. While the board had fun looking for the small and elusive “Sammy U” logo, hidden within the large vinyl SuperGraphics® on the sides of the rental trucks and trailers, the attendees were focused on learning something new that they may be able to apply in their facilities or in their work as committee and board members. On the engineering and testing floor, attendees observed the laser equipment used to measure coordinates of an object and produce a draft of the image digitally on the computer for research and reproduction. This same technology can be used as quality-control check for the consistency of parts. www.NATM.com

In order to quickly recreate an object with certain dimensions, the 3D printer was showcased. This technology was able to print objects with mobile parts – for example, a wrench with a working, adjustable worm-screw. The printer can be used in conjunction with software to create prototypes, redesigns, part fitment, and improve functionality of parts. U-Haul staff demonstrated meeting SAE standards of the force necessary to pull a two-inch ball from a two-inch coupling. The machine pulled up to the rated mark of 10,000 lbs. and held for one minute, and afterward continued to increase force until the coupler failed and separated near 19,000 lbs. A load deflection test on a torsion axle also took place nearby. The members also explored the manufacturing floor. As the company produces most of its own components, the floor was busy, productive and the workers diligent. The operation was impressive with its cleanliness and well-lit, organized floor that featured designated areas for all tools and materials. The efficiency was evident by the ease in which the trailer frames flowed smoothly throughout the many stages of production. As a rental company, the operations go much deeper than the usual, basic manufacturing of goods. The maintenance process for the trailers, as well as trucks and other products, requires meticulous and thorough recordkeeping and scheduled maintenance. By checking and repairing any damaged components and refurbishing the trailers, U-Haul retains highly detailed documentation and information of past renters, damages inflicted, repairs and any alterations to the products in order to reduce risk and liability.

Outfitted with modern virtual conferencing equipment and large windows offering natural light and views, the multi-million-dollar wellness facility was the ideal location to review NATM’s programming and goals. Opened in August 2021, the conference and fitness center is a 54,000 square-foot facility that includes a complete gym with weights, cardo equipment and resistance training, group fitness classes with professional instructors, a U-Haul Arena basketball court, golf simulator, and on-site medical clinic with a lab and physical therapy room. The board thoroughly explored and tested the new facility by shooting free throws and practicing layups on the court. The board meeting in Phoenix was not only able to showcase one NATM member’s processes in place to manufacture trailers, but to share knowledge and increase engagement amongst members. ■

U-Haul hosted the NATM Board of Directors’ quarterly inperson meeting at their new Shoen Family Conference & Fitness Center at the U-Haul Midtown Campus in Phoenix. The U-Haul Midtown Campus was given a platinum-level Green Business rating from the City of Phoenix and was also recognized as a 2020 S&P Global Platts Energy Award finalist in the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustained Excellence – Green Initiative. For more information about U-Haul’s green initiatives, turn to page 39.

DEALER

NATM Dealer Affiliate Program By Catie Rutkowski, NATM Membership & Events Coordinator

Trailer dealers serve as the main point of contact during the sales process of many National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) compliant trailers. This group is also a key stakeholder in the fight to improve trailer safety, as it is in their best interest for their customers to purchase a trailer that has been verified for compliance and be happy with their purchase. As a result, NATM created the NATM Dealer Affiliate Program. Increasing end-user awareness of the importance of the NATM Compliance Verification Program has consistently ranked as a top priority for trailer manufacturing members. Trailer manufacturers and NATM recognize that improving trailer safety can only be achieved when trailer dealers are knowledgeable about compliance, sell compliant trailers, and are able to educate end-users about safe trailering practices. However, with businesses to run, trailer dealers need access to information and resources to make this process easier. Enter the NATM Dealer Affiliate program.

The NATM Dealer Affiliation is $150 annually and affiliates experience a host of benefits, with an emphasis on education and resource access. The Dealer Affiliate program includes the following benefits: New NATM Dealer Affiliates also have the opportunity to attend NATM’s 2023 Convention & Trade Show in Fort Worth, TX for free through the New Attendee Promotion. Core Values and Change

By Bob Clements & Sara Hey, Bob Clements International | An excerpt from You’re the Problem (and the Solution) by Bob Clements and Sara Hey

It’s no surprise to you, as an owner or manager of a dealership, that rapid change is part of today’s business culture. Maybe rapid change scares you to death. Maybe you thrive on change. Wherever you might be on the continuum, you will have people in your dealership who are on the complete other end. Like black and white, paper or plastic, or kale or potato chips—the opposite end of the spectrum.

his gas station successfully because he communicated his core values to his employees, which included Bob.

I love change. The idea of doing the same thing day in and day out sounds like my nightmare. However, there are other people in our organization who get chills up and down their spines when I walk into a room, and it’s not because they are terrified of me, thank you very much. It’s because they know that for me to thrive, I need things to be fast-paced and new. All they want is to maintain a consistent routine.

“Do more for the customer than they expect.” New customers to Dale’s gas station were stunned that the front of their car was vacuumed as they were getting fuel.

Here is the thing I have come to realize. Both sides are, in fact, essential. You, on the high capacity for change side, we need you! We need you to push the envelope. We need you to think about how we can do things better, more efficiently, and more profitably. We need you to keep pushing us in a way where good enough is never good enough. On the flip side, those of you who when you hear the word change you get goosebumps up and down your spine, we need you too! We need you to hold our processes together like glue and push us to be consistent in what we are doing. We need you to help us pursue excellence and continued reliability. The moment we have one side without the other, balls begin to drop, and forward progress comes to a halt. Do you know how both the need to change and the need for stability coexist? It happens by having a common mission, a common set of core values, and a common vision. They let you and your employees make quick decisions because everyone is using the same manual to make their decisions. When my dad was young (right after dinosaurs went extinct), he worked at his granddad’s gas station. This was not just a gas station, but a service station, where you stayed in your car and not only had your car filled with gas by an attendant but also had your windows cleaned, oil and tire pressures checked, and the driver’s side of the car vacuumed out. That sounds almost identical to my experience at our local gas station—not! Bob’s granddad, Dale McGinness, operated

32

May/June 2022

“The customer comes first.” Bob will tell you that regardless of what you were doing when a customer pulled in the drive for fuel, everyone in the gas station stopped what they were doing to take care of the customer.

“Always be honest in what you say and do.” Again, Bob would tell you that his grandfather, Dale, was all about honesty. Whether the customer wanted to hear it or not, Dale always shot straight with them. His vision was focused, to be better than the competition, which in his case just happened to be right across the street selling gas for the exact same price that Dale was selling his for. Bob’s granddad knew the only thing he had to set his station apart from his competitors were the people who worked for him. And according to Bob, he worked tirelessly to keep all his people focused on those three key elements. Whether Dale was at the station or at home putting up hay while his people ran the station, he knew he had given his team the ability to make like-minded decisions without him being there. This set of decision-making references is also helpful when a “once in a lifetime” opportunity comes up. You know the ones I’m talking about. “Should I add a partner?” (No. No. No. No.) “I have an opportunity to open another location, does this make sense?” (Probably not, this is your ego talking.) “My kids just graduated, should they join the business?” (Only if they have a skill you need, and you have an opening.) You simply need to ask the question, “Does it match our mission, vision, and core values?” If yes, do it. Go all in. If no, respect the boundaries you have put in place to help you succeed. Andy Derr Receives 2022 Outstanding Young Professional Award Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) named Andy Derr of M.H. Eby as the recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Young Professional Award. This award recognizes the accomplishments of young individuals in the trailer manufacturing industry. Andy graduated from Messiah College in 2010 with a degree in Engineering and soon joined M. H. Eby as a design engineer. After a few years of experience, and spearheading some major design projects for the company, Andy was assigned management of the Engineering Department and soon took on other roles within the organization. Andy’s broad understanding and interest in the enterprise as a whole, and his enjoyment of process improvement and innovation made him an ideal candidate to move into the role of Operations manager in 2020, where he is involved with all aspects of Eby’s manufacturing business. Andy’s engineering background and keen attention to detail has made him a valuable contributor to NATM’s Technical Committee and Board of Directors. Andy was appointed to the Board in 2021 and immediately jumped in with a fresh perspective and new insights. It was Andy who came to NATM staff and volunteered to give a workshop on the importance and value of the Compliance Verification Program during the 2022 Convention & Trade Show. NATM looks forward to Andy’s input and expertise as he continues to help shape the future of the Association and supports the industry. ■

Fred Dosmann Receives 2022 Outstanding Associate Member Award Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) has awarded Dec-O-Art’s Fred Dosmann with the respected title of Associate Member of the Year for 2022. This annual award is presented to Fred in acknowledgement of his significant contribution to the trailer manufacturing industry. This recognition will be awarded at the 2022 NATM Convention and Trade Show in Tampa, Fla. in early February of 2022. “I am very proud to have been associated with the NATM for over 30 years,” said Fred. “It has been an honor to be able to see their maturity, along with mine, throughout the years. We’ve collaborated with them since the ground level, before they were incorporated, so it’s neat to see the growth in the committee.” During those substantial 30 years of service in the NATM organization, Fred worked diligently along with the organization and their members on behalf of Dec-O-Art. Dec-O-Art is a family-owned label printing company founded in 1971 and located in Elkhart, Indiana. Fred Dosmann’s father, Charles Dosmann was the founder and after more than 50 years of service, Dec-O-Art has become the premier source of quality labels and services to manufacturers of RV's, trailers, and boats to automotive, aerospace, and even government affiliates. ISO 9001 certified since 2002, Dec-O-Art specializes in screen printing, digital printing, finishing, and more. Fred Dosmann began his career with Dec-O-Art in 1980. Wanting to be involved in the family business to provide his expertise and make a name for the company, Fred worked in production, estimating, and sales before becoming an Owner of Dec-O-Art. He led the company as a Co-Owner for over 35 years. He had a clear passion for the company and began getting involved with the NATM industry 30 years ago. Fred has attended over 28 NATM Conferences throughout his active time at Dec-O-Art. He is excited to attend 38

May/June 2022

the NATM 2022 Conference as his last official conference and hand off the torch to his nephew, Nathan Dosmann, President and Owner of Dec-O-Art. Fred’s most impactful contribution to the industry was working attentively with NATM to develop the standardized warning labels. In 2000, NATM wanted to give liability protection to all utility trailer manufacturers that were associated with the organization. During the next two years, Fred worked closely with NATM to write the manufacturing rules and have Dec-OArt create all the images, designs, and layouts. After it was independently assessed, the standardized warning labels were copyrighted in 2002. Fred is delighted that he had a vital role in developing the labels that provide safety and regulation to the utility trailer’s standardized label needs. Because of this accomplishment, DecO-Art can proudly say that they are

one of three licensed compliance label manufacturers certified by NATM. Soon after that contribution, Fred began serving on the NATM Technical Committee. Throughout his years of involvement, he served on the NATM Compliance Board to continue keeping Dec-O-Art knowledgeable of any industry updates. He strongly believes in NATM’s values and is proud to have contributed to the industry. Fred recently announced his retirement from Dec-O-Art after a fulfilling and gratifying 41 years. He is pleased to attend the conference one last time and to accept the 2022 Associate Member of the Year Award. To learn more about Dec-O-Art and how Dec-O-Art has helped solve the problems of countless manufacturers with reliable and durable labels, visit www.dec-o-art.com. ■ www.NATM.com

U-Haul Receives 2022 Innovation Award Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is excited to premier a new award this year, the Innovation Award. As NATM members continue to exemplify great feats of creativity and innovation in the areas of technological advancement, green practices, and workforce development, the Association wanted to celebrate these achievements and perhaps inspire others to continue to innovate. And with that, the Innovation Award was born. The inaugural winner of the NATM Innovation Award is U-Haul. In the area of green practices, U-Haul has much to speak of. U-Haul’s Midtown Campus was given a platinum level Green Business rating from the City of Phoenix which requires the company completed 41-55 actions in the areas of waste diversion, transportation, water conservation, energy reduction, and sustainability. The Midtown Campus was also recognized as a 2020 S&P Global Platts Energy Award finalist in the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustained Excellence – Green Initiative. The Midtown Campus features 24 electric vehicle charging stations, LED lighting with sensors, insulated scrim ceiling, and high-efficiency HVAC with optimized ductwork. U-Haul’s green efforts include a million-dollar renovation of Anna Mary’s Café to include energy efficient appliances and an improved ventilation system to reduce heating and cooling costs. The Café now uses recycled-content to-go containers. U-Hauls innovations also include significant contributions to employee happiness and health, improving recruiting and retention opportunities. The company offers a gourmet coffee bar, freshly prepared meals, and various health eating options to power their workforce through the day. In August of 2021 the company opened its new multi-million-dollar Shoen Fmaily Conference and Fitness Center. The 54,000 square foot facility includes a complete gym with weights, cardo equipment and resistance training, www.NATM.com

fitness classes, the U-Haul Arena basketball court, golf simulator, and the on-site Premise Health medical clinic with a lab and physical therapy room. The facility also boasts a conference center with smart conference rooms with audio and visual integration for facilitating meetings with remote audiences – a strong leg up in today’s world with increasing remote meetings. Finally, U-Hauls Glendale facility boasts two Salvagnini L3 Fiber Lasers offering computerized laser-cutting

and automatic ordering of raw materials as stock runs low. It also works as smart vending machine for all production material used in robotic welding and cutting. The facility also has 6 robotic units handling much of the welding workload while manual welding areas service more delicate assignments. U-Hauls efforts to become greener, improve employee satisfaction, and automate processes are a fantastic example of innovation in the industry. ■ May/June 2022

Joe Ostrowski Receives 2022 Ed Freel Membership Award By Angela Arthmire, Dec-O-Art The Membership Award was established in 2000 to recognize those members who went above and beyond on behalf of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) in recruiting new members. From 2000 to 2007 the award was given to Ed Freel of KampCo Steel and thus was renamed, the Ed Freel Membership Award in his honor. And it seems we have an individual amongst us who is following in Ed’s footsteps. For the third time, the Ed Freel Membership Award is being given to Joe Ostrowski of Kenda/Americana Tire & Wheel Corporation. Joe is a tireless advocate for the Association and a constant on NATM committees. Joe is regularly in contact with NATM about prospective members, many times having helped lay the groundwork with the company before NATM even makes contact. Joe’s tenure in the tire industry has been illustrious, and during that time, he has amassed a vast network of friends, not just customers. He has helped to open the door for NATM amongst these friends, even helping the Association get into manufacturing facilities that have long been prospect members. Joe’s commitment to the mission of NATM and his belief in membership as a value-added proposition has been an integral part of our recruiting efforts. Thank you, Joe, for your dedication to growing NATM’s membership. ■

National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is looking forward to returning to Fort Worth, Texas, for its 2023 Convention & Trade Show, Feb. 14-16, 2023 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Texas continues to be a popular location for NATM’s Convention & Trade Show as an industry hub. The last convention hosted in Fort Worth saw a record breaking number of trailer manufacturers in attendance, and NATM is looking forward to welcoming trailer dealer affiliates to the full show.

Booth Selection The NATM Member rate for a 10’ x 10’ booth is $1,700. Booth spaces for nonmembers are $3,400. Trade show space will open to 2022 Sponsors starting May 30. Following sponsors, non-sponsor exhibitors at the 2022 show will then select their spaces. The opportunity to select space for general membership will open Aug. 1, and non-members will be allowed to choose booth space beginning Aug. 15. For more information about the booth selection process, turn to page 51.

Sponsorships As always, the NATM Convention & Trade Show would not be possible without the support of its generous sponsors. There are sponsorship opportunities available from $250 to $50,000 to fit any budget. Being a sponsor allows you to select your booth before previous exhibitors and the general membership, and provides a wide range of exposure, both electronically on NATM’s website and mobile app and in print on the convention program map and branded events. This creates name recognition which helps drive customers to your booth. Re-enter in-person events with a bang, and sponsor today! Watch your email for sponsorship information coming in May.

New Attendee Promotion Are you a new member trailer manufacturer? Are you a trailer manufacturer whose company has not attended in the last five years? Are you a dealer affiliate? VORSHEER INC Proves Fun and Safety Can Go Hand In Hand Erin Mohwinkle, NATM Marketing Coordinator

Though VORSHEER has only been in business for 3 years, a number of employees have an additional 6 years building overland trailers prior to working for VORSHEER. Combined there is more than 60 years’ experience building overland trailers. With their experience and willingness to participate and learn from leaders they have shown their commitment to quality adventures for their consumers.

According to Rodriguez, “The overlanding trailer industry is showing a lot of strength. With recreational vehicles being in high demand generally, it’s a great time to be small manufacturer of trailers and supply the market with the vehicles it demands. The growth we have experienced, and our projections for future growth, give a lot of encouragement looking forward.”

We spoke with David Rodriguez, VORSHEER LLC General Manager, to learn more about their Utah based trailer manufacturing operation. Adventure, freedom and quality are the three words he used to describe their company.

VORSHEER has taken advantage of all that the NATM membership provides. When speaking of the Compliance Verification Program (CVP), Rodriguez stated, “We appreciated the NATM inspection of our facility and inspection of our trailers. It is nice to have NATM validate our trailer design and manufacturing.”

With in-house CAD design specialists, VORSHEER trailers are creatively designed with a specific purpose. At VORSHEER, they love to see and hear about the amazing adventures customers have with their trailer.

VORSHEER has also been very active in educational seminar participation and joined the conversation with Government leaders in the Regulatory Round up. “It was helpful to have a voice regarding regulations that

has been tremendous. Because of this and other factors, they have been able to set up an impressive dealership network with great coverage throughout the western US.

Rodriguez went on to say, “NATM has been a great resource for us where we can ask questions and get support for things like compliance and regulation. Being a member of NATM also offers validation with our dealership network since being a member provides reassurance that our overland trailers are compliant with NHTSA.”

Rodriguez ended by saying, “As we continue to innovate and be an industry leader, we anticipate considerable growth and expansion. We expect VORSHEER will be a Household name like Jeep or Toyota. We also intend to pursue an IPO when our growth has reached that point.”

Though they have had to work through supply chain issues many have also been experiencing, their growth

Knudsen to Ride into Retirement After 42 Years in the Transport Industry Sauk Centre, MN – January 3rd, 2022 – Gary Knudsen, Felling Trailers’ Regional Sales Manager, has been a part of the heavy equipment and transport industry for a little over 42-years and has chosen to retire at the end of 2021. About 17 of those years have been spent selling trailers; 4-years with Towmaster and the last 13-years with Felling Trailers. Gary joined the Felling Trailers' team in June of 2008 as the North American Outside Sales Rep. He provided dealer support for ten states spanning from Alaska to the Dakota’s (North & South Dakota) to Arkansas, Texas, and the Canadian region. During his time with the Felling Trailers, Gary worked to expand the company's footprint across many industries, from the heavy haulers in the oil fields of Canada to the underground construction and paving arenas in the US (United States). Gary also worked internally with the engineering team to design, test, and implement the X-Force hydraulic detachable gooseneck line. "Gary's product knowledge along with his 20 plus years of experience as an owner/ operator in the trucking industry gave us great insight on what the consumer wanted and needed in a detachable gooseneck," said Pat Jennissen, Felling Trailers VP of Sales & Marketing. Felling Trailers’ introduced the X-Force Hydraulic Detachable Gooseneck trailer line to the industry in 2010 and has continued to grow their product offerings each year. Gary has built many working relationships with dealers and customers alike through the years, solving transport problems other manufacturers said were unsolvable. Felling’s Trailer Experts (Sales Team) work with dealers/customers to configure a trailer that will meet the desired specifications and provide a custom solution. “Gary has been a great asset to Felling Trailers since he joined the team in 2008. His vast market and product knowledge, experience, and dedication are greatly appreciated. We wish him well in his retirement!" said Nathan Uphus, Felling Trailers' Sales Manager. "Stepping away from the life of being a "trailer salesman" may take some getting used to. For Gary and probably many other salespeople, it's not just about the sale. It's about the relationships you build with your customers. As for us here at Felling Trailers, we thank you for your service. You have played a big part in what Felling Trailers is today. Enjoy retirement, Gary!" said Pat Jennissen, Felling Trailers VP of Sales & Marketing. Those in the industry who have had the opportunity to know and work with Gary know he is an avid motorcyclist. He will be shutting down his computer for the last time on 12-31-21, then hitting to road to put on the first miles in his retirement. "It's been a fun ride. I am glad to have had the chance to meet and work with all the people I have along the way. Thank you all. It's been a pleasure," said Gary Knudsen. ■

Felling Trailers Releases Design Updates to Their Signature Air Tilt Product Line

Sauk Centre, MN – January 28th, 2022 — The Felling Trailers’ Air Tilt model has undergone design modifications to increase operator ease of use and safety. One of the more notable updates was the fixed approach ramp, which was extended in length from 14” to 22”. “The new design offers a shallower approach angle to improve loading of compact construction equipment such as skid steers and mini excavators. Equipment designs are ever-changing, so it only makes sense to make modifications to keep in step,” said Nathan Uphus Felling’s Sales Manager. Extending the fixed approach ramp's length reduced the load angle by approximately 10 degrees, providing a better load angle with a more subtle break-over point. The new design also allows for the option of full-size oval recessed strobe lights. Air Tilt models with the new fixed approach ramp design were put into production in the spring of last year and put into service for customers by mid-year. The Air Tilt product line was first released to the trailer industry in early 2010. Initially, the model line consisted of the FT-40-2 TA and FT-50-3 TA. Over the past ten-plus years, the model line has expanded to offer six models, with payload capacities ranging from 19,700 lbs. to 50,000 lbs. The Air Tilt’s (TA’s) unique design utilizes air, powered from the tow vehicle, to tilt the trailer and optional ramps, eliminating the need for hydraulics. The air power from the tow vehicle fills two airbags (four airbags optional), which then raise the trailer smoothly; the airbag will then keep the deck in the tilted position to allow for loading/ unloading of multiple pieces of equipment. Superior towing capability and balance were achieved by placing the axles further back on the Air Tilt model than other tilt trailers on the market. 60
