More than 200 fish (cob) confiscated from illegal ski-boat angling activities north of Swakopmund over the weekend were this week donated by fisheries staff to old age homes in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. The fish weighed several tons.

Logan Pretorius, Reggenald Carlo Bezuidenhout, Sandra Riobo and Genielle Pretorius were contesting their innocence since their first court appearance in the matter in October 2015, but evidence against the four was overwhelming. At the time, Pretorius was also informed that he risks having his property and other belongings seized in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) if the

investigation found he accumulated his wealth from drug proceeds. In sentencing them, Magistrate Sindano Liwoyo said he is giving them a second chance to clean up their lives, but added dealing in drugs is a growing problem in Namibian society. Simultaneously drug use is also growing among Namibians and it is a social evil that needs to be rooted out.

N$1000 for savage killing of dog A man was fined N$1000 for animal cruelty by the Namibian Police in Walvis Bay this week, after he admitted to killing a young Bullterrier dog by hitting it with heavy objects. Two more people were seen taking part in this barbaric attack on the dog, but proved to be cowards by denying involvement and allow their accomplice to take the wrap alone. Several people witnessed the attack and it compelled the Police, who at first was not very energetic to attend to the incident, to give the culprit the fine. Animal cruelty is punishable by either a fine or prison conviction. Unfortunately, many Namibians still lack a culture of empathy towards animals and subject both domestic- and animals of burden (draught animals like donkeys, horses and oxen) to inhumane treatment every day right across the country. In this incident which took place last Friday, a Bullterrier approximately fourteen months old got out of its owner's premises as a new gate was under construction. Two males caught the dog and Continues on page 2

walked with it to a nearby premise in the central business district where a dilapidated house accommodates vagrants. There was another dog on the premise and the Bullterrier attacked the dog when it encountered it. Soon, three men were seen attacking the Bullterrier with an axe and other heavy objects, including a large rock which they threw at the dog. The animal was gravely injured and was taken to a local vet. It was decided the extent of its injuries necessitated the animal to be put down (animal euthanasia). Relatives of the owner of the dog said this week he is too emotionally distressed to talk about the matter and his household is devastated by the loss of the dog which was described as good natured and very lovable. “It is time our nation realises that cruelty to animals expose a fundamental flaw in us as a nation. At the same time, it reflects negatively on a nation that cannot properly care for its children, women, old people and the handicapped”, this relative added. She was also critical of the Namibian Police, as the investigating officer's reaction was that the man must just get a fine of N$1000, “so that the matter can be put to rest”.

You Tube Channel launched for Ministry of Information and Communication Sharlien Tjambari Technology – First Debate will be on gender equality Next week Monday, 26 February the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT)-Erongo Regional office will conduct a public debate to confront the question: is gender equality a key to development? “We asked members of the community to write letters to us, discussing the topic: is gender equality a key to development? We received a positive response and letters arrived in good numbers”, confirmed Paulina Moses, a senior official in the MICT Erongo regional office. The MICT Erongo Regional Office's “Debate with MICT in Erongo”, is a platform for opinion and to facilitate a culture of writing and reading. It also nurtures respect for different opinions amongst our communities. Moses further explained the letters will be published in the media on 26 February. The debate, which is scheduled to take place from 10:00, will be recorded and then uploaded on MICT Erongo YouTube Channel. The Channel will be launched on that same day.

According to Moses, all MICT's programs are actively targeting both men and women. Even on topics like gender, input from both sexes are fundamental. In addition, it is also the ministry's obligation to conduct public meetings for sharing and exchange of community empowerment information. The first debate subject comes in celebration of Namibia 2017 African Gender Award, in recognition for the country's effort to promote gender equality. President Hage Geingob received the award on behalf of Namibia. Moses invites the community to watch the debate and witness the launch of the MICT Erongo You Tube Channel. The launch event will take place at MICT Erongo Regional Office.

Shack fire – illegal electricity connection Sharlien Tjambari again the culprit Illegal electricity connections between main dwellings and shacks caused yet another devastating fire at the coast. On Wednesday morning around 08:00, residents of Omulondo, Tulinawa and Oletweni woke up to the smell of smoke in the air. They investigated and found three shacks ablaze in Thiras Street in Tulinawa. A homeowner discovered that the main switch in the electricity board in her house was off. She made

several unsuccessful attempts to switch the electricity back on before being alerted by neighbours of a fire in her back-yard in a shack. The fire spread rapidly and destroyed three shacks.

Powered By Namibia Breweries Limited, Cab App Service 'LEFA' Is Officially Launched In response to the national concern of the alarming rate of road accidents, and fatalities on Namibian roads, Cab App service, LEFA – proudly supported and powered by Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group was officially launched on Tuesday, 20 February 2018. “Road fatalities in Namibia is a national concern and touches each and every one of us. Sadly, drunk-driving is one of the major causes of road accidents in the country,” said founder of 'LEFA', Melkisedek Shivute Ausiku, affectionately known as “Melkies” at the official launch. He added that the birth of this cab service was born from a place of concern and care for his fellow Namibian people, as well as for the future of the country. Ausiku: “With so many people dying on our roads, this greatly affects the growth of our country and economy. But even more so, it affects and greatly impacts the lives of so many people who lose a loved one. The LEFA Cab App is solely brought to life as contribution to curbing this unfortunate reality. The word “LEFA” is derived from the Oshiwambo word for lift. LEFA was inspired by my passion to solve problems such as the bad habit of driving under the influence of alcohol. It is my wish that patriots who engage in social gatherings where the consumption of alcohol is imminent should make use of a convenient service such as LEFA, instead of driving under the influence of alcohol.” Speaking at the launch, NBL Managing Director,

Wessie van der Westhuizen emphasized on how LEFA speaks directly to NBL's Stay Cool, Enjoy Responsibility' campaign. Van der Westhuizen: “All this is done with the aim of addressing this national catastrophe that begs a change of mind-set, behaviour and attitude of motorists and other roadusers to complement the great infrastructure such as our roads. Perhaps it is the fact that we seemingly have too many vehicles on our road, especially in a relatively small city like Windhoek where accidents happen on a daily basis. It is my hope therefore that LEFA would become every bit as much a part of your daily routine as a morning cup of coffee or a glance at your Facebook/Twitter or Instagram feeds. I believe the burst of LEFA onto the transportation scene brings with it incredible opportunities and efficiencies. NBL is proud to be associated with this venture and we extend our heartfelt congratulations on the launch of LEFA and a very successful partnership! We look forward to the positive difference LEFA will make in the lives of residents of the Windhoek city and beyond, and we welcome any constructive feedback to enable LEFA to become the trusted and successful brand it is destined to be.”

LEFA currently has 11 drivers and according to Melkies aim to have at least 50 drivers over the next month. The App is officially available for download and ready for service. The App is only effective in Windhoek at the moment, while according to Melkies plans are underway, with hopes and endeavours that soon the service will be spread to other towns in the country. Melkies: “A fee to ensure

your safety and that of others, is better than ending up behind bars, or in a hospital bed, or in a grave. LEFA could play such a significant role in curbing drunk-driving if we all just embrace this service available for the better. Our slogan is punctual, safe and reliable, and we intend to be committed as best we can, on this journey of contributing to safer roads in the city, and ultimately in Namibia.”

NOTICE Please take note that Van Der Westhuizen Town Planning & Properties CC on behalf of the owner/s of Erf 546, Swakopmund, herewith intend to apply to the Municipality of Swakopmund for the following: “ C O N S E N T TO C O N S T R U C T A N D OPERATE A RESIDENTIAL GUEST HOUSE ON ERF 546, SWAKOPMUND”. Two ski-boat owners caught with illegal catch of nearly 300 kabeljou The public is enraged and renewed calls are made for better controls and law enforcement to protect Namibia's kabeljou (cob) resource. That is after two ski-boat owners were caught red-handed in a matter of four days each having on board their boats close to three hundred cob. Hannes Swanepoel mens kry mos altyd een wat n &@* voel vi die reels....en dan weg kom met n slap on the wrist...more doen hy dit weer. Konfiskeer die boot laat hy voel. Werner Ahrens It would be useful to have the fisheries situated at the slipway in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay that inspect the vessels coming back from a trip. Vessels leaving for a trip could also be logged perhaps? Gideon Kotze They enter the water on a lot of places as is Wlotzka Baken, mile eight. Werner Ahrens Aaah ok. If they don't enter the water at designated areas then it should be considered illegal. Otherwise there will be no control. Anja Kreiner And who are the culprits that buy this illegally caught fish??Unfortunately there seems to be a market for this crime. Gunther Ham Why doesn't government just bring in fines like N$500 per fish and suspended fishing license for a year. That'll deter anyone from catching too much because you'll rather buy a fish in the shop for 50 bucks than risk paying 500. 300 Cob x $500. 150 000 is a nice sum for Fisheries. Should Mnr Pienaar not have access to such funds, there's always the option of auctioning off the boat and fishing gear. Susanne Jaspert for a year only??? Anton Halgreen Everyone tries to earn a few extra bucks but this is extreme! Most of these

guys doing this are already financially settled! Johan Engelbrecht Most land anglers follows the rules when another fisherman sets up close them. But when you go out without a rod you will see a different story. Officials need unmarked vehicles, an ID card of sorts and not wear uniform. You'll see how many get caught then. Diederick Johannes Muller ... and we stare at the small boats that has 300 fish and think that this is sooo terrible. They might not be correct, but what about the Chinese, Russian and Spanish vessels that catch millions of fish at a time in Namibian waters without licenses? They are usually not plastered on social media and therefore they get away with it, even though they are raping our reserves. Monika Fourie It is time that something urgently is done about this! The government and lawmamers are responsible to protect our resources. They have to imply much higher fines. I agree with Gunther Ham!!!! Michelle, we are all Namibians and know the truth. What help to you or the govt have to offer,? If she is homeless will you give her accomodation? I doubt it... President of the NNOC Mr Abner Axel Xoagub with all the NAMEF award winners of 2017

Junior rider Nadine Flemming scooped the most awards at the Namibian Equestrian Federation (NAMEF) annual awards last Saturday evening in Swakopmund. The NAMEF Presidents Mr Riaan van Rooyen said, “it is very important for any Sport Federation to give recognition to all their athletes that worked hard and achieve their goals during the year.’’ Equestrian is a unique discipline to the Olympic Movement and the Namibia National Olympic C o m m i t t e e (NNOC). The Federation and the athletes improving over the years and the changes to qualify for the Commonwealth and Olympic Games are ever becoming a reality. That calls for an improved closer relationship between the two

parties and increased support to the Federation. The President of the NNOC Mr Abner Axel Xoagub who was the guest of honor at the NAMEF award evening said that over the past two years Equestrian Sport has embarked on a drive to qualify their athletes for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Federation has managed to achieve the fifth ranking on the African Ranking. Unfortunately, the fifth African Spot has been allocated to Mauritius on a wildcard basis. Namibia National Olympic Committee has done away with Wildcards, as they believe that athletes must qualify for their

participation at the games and not take the deserving spots of athletes. The issue will be followed up at the upcoming meeting with the Olympic Movement in November 2018 in Japan. Mr. Xoagub mentioned that Nadine Fleming and Aniké Maritz have already qualified for the African Youth Games. “We are looking forward to our new partnership and collaboration to promote and popularise the sports in Namibia, including the welfare of the animals. We shall also collaborate with the Federation on issues related to Anti – Doping for both the Athletes and Horses.” Xoagub said. “I am very proud of my horse and every person that supported me during the year. Thanks to my mom and dad for all the effort that you have put in to me to make the past year a

success. NAMEF family you guys are the best. Seeis Stud thanks for giving me the best horse” Nadine Flemming said. Nadine is very proud to represent her country at the African Youth Games. She qualified for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games but due to the rules of the Olympic Movement she will not be able to represent the country. Fund raising Golf Tournament This weekend is our fund raiser and we can confirm that it will be a 3 ball alliance with two scores to count on all holes. Entry fee will be N$1050 [N$350 per player] which is just double of normal Saturday competition fees, and as this is for the club it was felt that this was not too much extra.

Guys who have paid the annual green fee will only pay N$200 for the day. We will also be selling mulligan's, a max of 3 [not 5 as previously advertised] per team at 100 each, these are optional with the first prize is going to be in the region of 5 000 buck, you might consider a mulligan or two. Each player will only be allowed to use one mulligan during the round so choose you mulligan shot carefully. ALL PLAYERS WILL STILL BE REQUIRED TO ENTER YOUR SCORE AS NORMAL EVEN IF YOU USE A MULLIGAN. Above the prizes there will be many lucky draws so be sure to remain after your round to stand a chance. There will be a lunch included in the price of your entry. We will also have an item or two for auction so please bring your wallet. Remember that this is for the club funds which we all benefit from so please support this initiative; we depend on your support just as much as you, the member, depends on a course in good shape. Winners Round 1: 1st: P Fox/ S Figueirido 49pts; 2nd: K Wentzel/ W van Zyl 48pts; 3rd: A Bonifatius and T Shitaleni 45 pts c/o over M Jacobs/C Lawrence. There were two lucky draws going to Tiekie De Wet and Stanley Gawanab. We say thanks to Dulux for this great initiative and their support of golf throughout Namibia. A special word to Johan Smit and Kanna Le Riche for being there on the day to enjoy our fantastic golf course and to officiate at the prize-giving. We look forward to Round 2 on 21 April. Sunday 18 February saw a good turnout of SAGES in support of a new sponsor Tienie & Betsie van Rensburg from Guesthouse Fischreiher – Tienie is an ardent golfer and can be seen regularly on the Rossmund fairways. The weather was hot at times until a slight South Wester brought some relief - as the players turned through the club-house. Betsie was on hand to help with the prize giving. Unfortunately there were no 2-clubs – no one managed to drive (reach) the green on Number 12 however sponsor Tienie was successful on Number 7. Winners: 1st: Clive Lawrence 37pts; 2nd: Chris Bothma 36pts; 3rd: Tim Botha 35pts c/o over Koot Potgieter (good to see you back); 5th: Tienie van Rensburg 33pts c/o over Lucille Abrahams and Mark Jacobs. As always every-one went away with a bit of something and the camaraderie was great. Thanks again to Tienie & Betsie for making the day possible.

Wednesday 14 February we had a few breakfast vouchers on offer compliments of Atlantic Villas with Bubble Burns coming home with an excellent score of 42pts making up for her disappointing round last week. That's golf - always manages to produce something to bring you back. Second place went to Willie van Zyl on 35pts; Robert Boesch played the Best Back 9 with 21pts whilst Oom Frans showed his consistency by taking the Most Golf for the second week in a row. Coming up events: Wednesday 21 February sponsor the Pro Shop Marlon Swart will be on the driving range with his Titleist Products for those guys looking for some new clubs or just fitting assistance. Saturday 24 February - Novanam Monthly Medal Match play 2018 - Entry Lists for this year's competition have been posted on the notice board - entries will close on 31 March. Annual Fees: Membership & NAGU/ Handicap Fees are due and payable by 28 February - please make sure that you pay them on time or at least make arrangements to do so. NAGU Fees N$350 payable at the bar - please obtain your receipt. In addition we request all Country Mem-bers to provide proof that all fees have been paid to their Home Club. Golf can be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.

JC le Roux 'le Zero' Target Archery Shoot Target Archery kicked off the season with a splash of pink at SKW this past weekend. Archers from all over Namibia participated at the JC le Roux le Zero sponsored competition All Namibian archers were in good form, showing that archery really does not have a “down season” as so many other sports. Distances from 10 meters for beginners to 60 meters for our Recurve archers were shot on Saturday with perfect weather prevailing throughout the competition. Our three recurve archers, Quinn Reddig, Adriaan Grobler and Christiaan Brandt are currently preparing for the African Continental Qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games in Algeria that will take place in Algeria from 17-27 July 2018. Seppie Cilliers, South African champion was also a participant at the competition and with the initiative from Louw Nel and Seppie Cilliers

hosted a much needed training camp on Friday evening for all interested archers. Cilliers is a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, three-time World gold medallist, many time SA National Champion and has had more than 18 SA National records, 8 of which are current. He is one of only two people in Africa who has shot a perfect IFAA indoor score of 300/300 with 60/60x's. He has a perfect FITA 30m round of 360/360 and is also the only person on the African continent to have shot a perfect 30m double record of 720/720. He gave some very much needed training tips on mental preparation and bow maintenance to our NamiSeppie Cilliers and Louw Nel
