Many families struggle to find a decent job and in order to put bread on the table they have opted to sell handmade products to tourists. However, these street vendors face a daily challenge. According to them, while walking around town trying to sell their products, they are continuously harassed by security guards who would chase them away. One such street vendor, Avelino Domingos, approached the Namib Times in frustration and expressed his anger with a certain security company which operates in the Central Business District (CBD). He also expressed his frustration with Swakopmund Municipality officials for chasing him away while he was trying to sell his products. Domingos explained, “on 12 December, security guards from a certain security company met me in town while I am busy selling my products, they
took me to their office and told me that I am not supposed to sell my products here in town. I said it is okay then I will go sell my things at the beach.” The following day, on 13 December, according to Domingos, he was at the beach doing business as usual when he again encountered security officers from the same company, who reminded him of the conversation they had the previous day - that he is not allowed to sell his products in town.
