Several people have been arrested yesterday morning for resisting against members of the Namibian Police who removed them from a public area in front of the Namport headquarters in Walvis Bay. The arrested individuals are part of a group of casual workers who have been “camping” at Namport since last Friday, resisting a decision by the port authority to end their casual labour contracts. Ugab reaches the sea Erwin Leuschner The Ugab River reached the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday morning. It is the first river to reach the sea during this rainy season. The river's mouth is just south of the main gate of the Skeleton Coast National Park. Other reports over the past few days indicate the Omaruru River has reached the Omdel dam, while the Kuiseb River is also still flowing - but still has a long way to go before it would reach the Rooibank area. The Swakop- and Khan Rivers were both flowing at Usakos over the past few days, but have not reached Goanikontes yet. “The Ugab is still flowing at a section between Khorixas and Uis,” said Uis resident Basil Calitz yesterday. Development of Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall has Sharlien Tjambari become a dream, not a reality Talks about how great the development of the Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall would be and how many people it will employ are becoming less and less and the community of Swakopmund have become more concerned than excited. Is this development ever going to come to Swakopmund? The billboard which indicated that there would be development coming to Swakopmund was removed last year, by who and why are the questions asked by the community as they drive or walk by the billboard stand which now lies on the ground at the open area where the development was set to take place. “Why have they taken the billboard? Does this mean they are cancelling the development? What will happen to the railway station if they cancel? They have relocated our train station to a dangerous area which is not safe for boarding the train” asked a concerned resident who always walks past the billboard on her way to work. Many think that the development of the Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall will never happen and all eyes are on TransNamib Holdings who in their recent feedback told namib times that they await ministerial approval for the development to resume. The development of the Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall was supposed to commence in April 2014 already, but has been on hold ever since. Attempts to get an update from TransNamib Holdings on the Bahnhof The Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall billboard was removed and the billboard stand now Square development were unsuccessful. lies on the ground, there is clearly no sign of development on site
Police remove casual workers Piquet Jacobs Several people have been arrested yesterday morning for resisting against members of the Namibian Police who removed them from a public area in front of the Namport headquarters in Walvis Bay. The arrested individuals are part of a group of casual workers who have been “camping” at Namport since last Friday, resisting a decision by the port authority to end their casual labour contracts. The regional commander of the Namibian Police in Erongo, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu first addressed the group of people and requested them to disperse and leave the area as their gathering was illegal. When requests fell on deaf ears, the orders came. Soon members of the police pounced on the group of people, forcing them to disperse. Those who resisted were detained (a picture on our front page show one of the group members being dragged to a waiting police vehicle). The situation was back to normal by mid-day. Nampol regional headquarters confirmed yesterday those detained were warned and released. The group of casual workers have been camping outside the Namport head office for almost a week after they had been laid off by Namport. The casual workers had previously been deployed in repacking fish, which was over the years handled by Namport on behalf of the owners of the fish. The packing operations became cost ineffective and from 1 February this year Namport discontinued the re-packing operations. Hence the services of the casual labourers were no more needed. Everyone was informed of the decision, but the casual workers were not satisfied by this decision and registered a case at the Ministry of Labour. They decided to camp in front of the port authority's headquarters to highlight their discontent.

“ Bypassing of Electricity Prepaid Boxes As part of the routine spot checks on prepaid meters, the Energy Management and Revenue Protection Section of Erongo RED detected unusual purchasing patterns on some of our residential customers in Walvis Bay. In addition to this, Erongo RED received a tip-off from a local resident about a certain individual who was bypassing pre-paid meters of certain customers. This prompted Erongo RED to appoint a private investigator to assist in identifying the culprits who are involved in this practice. The findings of the investigation have been submitted to the Namibian Police in Walvis Bay for further investigation. Erongo RED will co-operate with the Police in this ongoing investigation. Erongo RED wishes to caution the members of the public from tampering with electrical apparatuses; paying someone to tamper with electrical apparatuses or attempt to bypass meters in order to avoid paying for the electricity used. Erongo RED will continue to put strategies in place aimed at combating energy losses through fraudulent activities. This includes customer education through awareness campaigns, instilling a culture of payment for services, suspension of illegal connections, fines for those found tampering with electrical apparatuses as well as laying charges against such individuals as part of our revenue protection interventions. At Erongo RED, we uphold the principles of good corporate governance and we pride ourselves in ensuring that we execute our mandate to bring “electricity to all by 2020”. We wish to request members of the public to assist us in combating these fraudulent activities by reporting any suspicious connections at their nearest Police Station or call our Call Centre at 0819600.”

Nog deur Louw & Harveson w a t Wa l v i s b a a i e r s vandag sal kan onthou as Globe Engineering.
Selfs haar lewe as langlynboot was nou verby.

500 copies with variety corruption prevention messages to be spread across Erongo Sharlien Tjambari The Erongo Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in co-operation with the Ministry of Education launched a poster competition for secondary school learners in Erongo last year and the winning posters were printed out and handed over to the Ministry of Education on Thursday, 16 February at the Swakopmund Constituency Office in Swakopmund. The aim of the poster competition was to promote the interest of the youth to contribute to the fight against corruption by creating posters speaking out against corruption. During the hand-over ceremony of the posters to the ministry the Chief Public Education and Corruption Prevention Officer of ACC Mr. Tobias Amoonga said the poster competition was one of ACC's high point projects in the directorate of public education in Erongo. He applauded the business community and key stakeholders in Erongo who made this project a success. ACC together with AREVA, Erongo Red, Namport, Strauss Group Construction and Waltons printed a total of 500 copies of various posters with corruption prevention messages. “We would like to make sure that the messages on this posters reach everyone in the region and maybe that way we will prevent corruption” said Amoonga. According to Amoonga the posters will be seen at all 70 schools of the Erongo region and also at the governor's office, constituency council office, ministry of education offices, and at places which are frequently visited by the youth. Posters will go as far as Windhoek and Angola. From ten to fifteen schools which participated, learners from Namib High School received all the prizes and Amoonga said the learners from Namib High School had a great art teacher who made sure the learners put more effort in spreading the message of corruption prevention. The Senior Education Officer in the Erongo region Mrs. Emsie Orus who received the posters on behalf of the Ministry of Education said she is stunned by the talent of Erongo learners “I never thought the learners were capable of doing this, this is exciting” she said. Orus further said she is already thinking of ideas on how to carry out the messages of HIV prevention in the same way as they did with corruption and she advised ACC to involve rural schools next time they have such competitions so that nobody would feel left out. Amoonga said this poster competition was the first ever competition within ACC and no other ACC office has ever done this project.

Ryazanovka meets its end The Russian trawler Ryazanovka is seen on the Syncro lift in Walvis Bay where work has commenced to scrap the vessel. The vessel arrived in Walvis Bay in the latter part of 2016 after a Chinese businessman lodged an application to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources for the capture of live dolphins, orca whales, seals and penguins to sell to Aquariums in Asia. The application was abandoned. Ryazanovka, which was supposed to carry out the catching operations was in such a dilapidated state that there was no option other than to scrap it. Residents complain of dust pollution at railroad yard
Number plates of imported vehicles are seen piling up at a premises in Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay is a transit hub for import vehicles from the United Kingdom to several of Namibia’s neighbouring states. It is unclear though why the vehicles’ number plates are removed as seen in this picture. The location where the picture was taken was forwarded to the relevant authorities to make inquiries
NAMAS return to Swakopmund Erwin Leuschner The Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA) will once again be hosted in the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre, scheduled to take place from 28 to 29 April 2017. The Swakopmund Town Council recently decided to support the event with N$200 000.
Residents of 5th Road in Walvis Bay’s lagoon area contacted namib times and complained over dust pollution at TransNamib’s railway yard. Sand and gypsum soil is dumped on large heaps on the railway carrier’s premises and an excavator then causes dust when it works the dumped composites. A guesthouse across the street from where the work is carried constantly has to battle the dust. On the picture above the dust is also detectable on the fence and pavement in front of the railway yard
The announcement to once again host the NAMA's in the coastal town was made by Tim Ekandjo, Executive Chairman of the NAMA's. In a letter he addressed to Town Council in December 2016 he states that “Swakopmund made history by successfully hosting the event twice consecutively in 2014 and 2015.” In 2016 the NAMA's took place in Windhoek. “During those years, we had the full support of the Swakopmund municipality who partnered with us and paid for the venue (the Dome) and also sponsored free accommodation for our technical crew and artists who were accommodated at your bungalows,” Ekandjo states. He once again requests Town Council for financial assistance, mostly to spon-
sor the accommodation of various crew members at the bungalows. The staff compliment will consist of NBC crew (75 pax), DB Audio Crew (42 pax), Rockstar crew (15 pax), Nominees (195 pax), Performing Artists (25 pax) and Dancers (30 pax). In total the accommodation for the 382 people he quotes at N$424 200. According to the Agenda of the recent Council meeting the NAMA's constitute as one of the biggest social events on the Namibian music calendar and more than N$5 million are invested annually by the sponsors. “Council should bear in mind that it has been recognised as one of the highest sponsors of the NA-MA event which is excellent exposure and achievement,” it states. Furthermore all
Councillors and Management will receive VIP tickets to attend the event. “Music and sports are the key elements that unify any community, considering the variable culture and differences that may exist,” it continues in the Agenda. Two weeks prior to the NAMA's the Namibian Newspaper Soccer Cup will be hosted in Swakopmund. These events promise to benefit the local economy as more than 4 000 people are expected to attend both events. The organiser of the NAMA's, MTC, will cover the cost for the venue, which is discounted to the amount of N$550 000. Town Council decided to sponsor N$200 000 towards accommodation at the Municipal Rest Camp.

Shitaleni is a member of the Walvis Bay Police's Crime Investigation Unit. The member of the public approached the Anti-Corruption Commission and after a sting operation the said the Police Officer was arrested in a Police vehicle near the Pelican Bay Protea Hotel, Walvis during which the bribe of N$5 000 was handed over in exchange for destroying the case docket of the whistle blower. Harrold Page The people living in Lagoon surely can afford to pay for their electricity used. Werner van Zyl Not really my point. Whether a hand full of individuals can 'afford' to pay electricity bills does not justify the rates being so high. Also, they did not state where in the lagoon area. The "lagoon" area is quite big and includes more than just the row of houses built on the lagoon front. A lot of the houses in the "lagoon" area cost the same as the rest of town so living in the lagoon area doesn't nescessarily mean that you can "afford" the bills...

Schneider-Waterberg free on bail again Emily Schneider-Waterberg, the well-known former estate agent of Swakopmund who saw her bail cancelled as a result of an outstanding warrant of arrest for failing to attend court appearances on charges of assault and malicious damage to property, has been freed on bail once more. Nieuwoudt Boshoff The rules are quite clear and simple actually. You pay the court a fee, in effect promising to show up for your hearing, and they allow you to walk free until your trial date. When you don't show up for your hearing, your bail is revoked, and you are arrested - why is this 'fair' and applicable to everyone, except this lady who somehow thinks that bail is a 'right' and not a privilege?

MET: Desert Lion XPL-98 died of anthrax The male desert lion known as XPL-98, whose carcass was found earlier in January 2017 in the Ugab River area, died as a result of Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). The Ministry of Environment and Tourism made this statement yesterday after the discovery of the carcass initially caused a public outcry, mainly on the social media platform facebook. Izak Smit This is absurd. I personally phoned four MET officials to report the freshly deceased carcass and was told they were on leave/ could not respond. We also alerted the Vet a nd researcher. The latter denied Anthrax and " performed an autopsy". As far as we know the researcher is not a qualified Veterinary surgeon ( which we suggested). He even removed the infected head and paws and drove around with it. If we had not "interfered" nothing wouldve happened! This statement comes 5 weeks after the fact. On one hand the minister proposes public involvement for conservation and human wildlife conflict and now condemns it as interference as the MET got embarrassed for not doing its job? We have AGAIN appealed for a effective channel through which we can communicate directly ! Phoning the officials was a waste of time... Nancey Enell Izak who are these people's Boss?

Und wer will was damit bezwecken?

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced it has chosen the name Eclipse Cross Mitsubishi Motors Names New Compact SUV: Eclipse Cross for its new compact SUV model to be debuted at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show* to be held in Geneva, Switzerland March 7 through 19, 2017. Eclipse derives its name from the MMC's popular specialty coupe model sold in the U.S. from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover. Eclipse is a word used to describe an astronomical event. Marrying stylish coupe lines with the freedom of movement the SUV genre gives, the Eclipse Cross's beautiful, dynamic form serves to bring about the same sense of excitement and inspiration as the diamond ring seen immediately before and after a total solar eclipse does. The high-saturation red body color newly developed for the model is also reflected in the name to evoke the brilliance of the prominence seen during the total solar eclipse.

The Coca Cola Dome Olympics in March Sharoldine Bock
Huge excitement exists for the Coca Cola Dome Olympics Day that takes place on Saturday, 4 March this year. The Dome Sport Complex where the event will take place is in Swakopmund. The event had its origins in an Olympics competition held prior to the Rio Olympic Games held last year. In the spirit of the Olympics the Dome last year thought it appropriate to present fun activities with a time limit attach to it. The person with the best time is the winner. This year’s event mirrors the event of last year. The Olympics is fast becoming a leading event on the calendar of the Dome Sport Complex. Various sport codes feature in the event. It all goes about completing the challenges in time. The team with the fastest time overall wins the competition. Ten obstacles need to be cleared within a 3-hour period. Teams comprise of four members each. Prizes include trophies and medals. Different age groups compete. “This allows companies and the general public to form teams in which they compete in this fun event. Team building, teamwork, the se sense of belonging and achievement are attributes encouraged by this event. It also allows people from different sport codes to compete in a team environment”, noted Lance Smith, organizer of the event.

The Dome Olympics was organized with the main initiative to enable non-sport participants to become involved. Participating requires low levels of sport skill. It promotes fitness and develops co-ordination as well as problem solving skills. The Dome actively promotes all sport codes offered under its roof. It is also an opportunity to serve as an Open Day to promote The Dome. On the same day, there will be a Frühschoppen, a German tradition. It will be hosted on the upper deck. Traditional German games will also be presented, much like the Oktoberfest. Sporting codes which will be integrated in the obstacle course are: Gymnastics, Cross Fit, Inline Hockey, Health and Wellness Centre (Rowing), Action Hockey, Indoor Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball “Last year Weimann's Carpentry walked away with the first prize. This year as many as thirty teams are expected to participate, according to Smith. The Dome wishes to share its vision of fun and sports with the local community, in order to inspire the people to look after their physical health.
