Ten storey hotel to tower Cranes to be positioned over Waterfront Floris Steenkamp along 600 m long quay wall A ten storey hotel and casino will tower over the Walvis Bay Waterfront in the foreseeable future, a local architect confir- on new container island med this week. The exact location of this future project is where the former Dolphins Coffee Shoppe was situated across the street from the Protea Hotel Pelican Bay by Marriot. A local architect confirmed the project on condition of anonymity, as it is still in its initial phase with many design features yet to be finalised. The owner of the development is a Chinese businessman and the development of the hotel is expected to further raise Walvis Bay's profile in the Chinese market as a tourist- and investment destination. "I can confirm the project. However, there is more than one local architect involved in the project, and I don't want to pre-empt the project with any public statements", explained this architect. Note: the hotel project must not be confused with the waterfront project, a joint initiative by the municipality of Walvis Bay and Afrikuumba Development on the land currently occupied by the municipal swimming pool and cricket oval.

The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) is expected to take delivery of its four ship to shore cranes (sts’s), the first of its kind container handling equipment that will be installed on the new container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. The delivery of the cranes will take place in about one month’s time, confirmed corporate communication manager for Namport, Tana Pesat this week. The cranes form part of the turnkey container terminal currently under construction by China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) in the port of Walvis Bay. The cranes were manufactured in China. The cranes will arrive in Walvis Bay partly assembled. The completion of the container terminal is scheduled for the last quarter of this year or early 2018. The total cost of construction is N$4 billion and will double the container capacity of the port of Walvis Bay from a Continues on Page 2

All remaining Grade 1 No trace yet of mother learners to be placed in baby dumping case soon Erwin Leuschner

Sharlien Tjambari

Although many Grade 1 learners in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay have not found a place at schools yet, the Inspector of Education for this circuit, Monica Gawises, reassured the public that the situation is "under control" and that all registered learners will soon find a place at schools. According to Gawises Government will construct seven additional classrooms at the Hanganeni Primary School in Swakopmund, where all registered Grade 1's will be placed. "Currently, there are still a total of 358 Grade 1 learners without a place in school in Walvis Bay. Initially, there were more than 700, but we managed to accommodate most of these children at the Kuisebmond Project School. Namport constructed four additional classrooms there", she explained. Gawises added in Swakopmund a total of 306 Grade 1 learners still need to be placed. The inspector reassured concerned parents these learners will be allocated a place as soon as the construction of the additional classrooms has been completed. "She pleaded for parents to be patient and re-assured the public these children will soon be placed". According to Gawises a meeting with affected parents is scheduled to take place on Monday (15 January) at the Atlantic Primary School hall. The immediate future of these children will take main stage in the discussions. In the meantime, the Governor of Erongo Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua also stepped in with words of encouragement over the situation. When namib times contacted him over the situation with regard to the placement of children in schools, he responded as follows: "We are trying to make arrangements for the construction of extra classrooms in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. We are committed to provide accessible education to all the children." Clr Mutjavikua also assured concerned parents that the Ministry of Education also has enough qualified teachers. At the same time more applications from teachers who wish to teach at coastal schools are also coming in.

The police have not yet made an arrest in connection with the dumping of a newborn baby boy in a bin close to the Vineta Woermann&Brock shopping complex in Swakopmund on 3 January 2018. "We are requesting anybody who has information surrounding this matter to report to the nearest police station", said Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, to namib times.

The newborn baby was found dead in a bin located next to a busy road only a stone's throw from the Woermann Brock shopping centre in Vineta. It was suspected the child was suffocated before being wrapped in plastic along with the placenta. The police is investigating a case of concealment of birth, but murder is also not ruled out at this stage. "In these instances suspects try their best to conceal the birth of the baby. The mothers have the children in locations where they are not seen by anyone and afterwards the newly born are dumped", explained Iikuyu. In this particular case it is suspected the baby was born on the same day it was dumped.

A white Toyota Passo (N93484W) with five (5) occupants [including the driver] was travelling from Usakos in the direction of Swakopmund. Some 36 km from Usakos the rear left tyre of the vehicle had a blowout, resulting in the driver losing control over the vehicle. The sedan overturned, causing the instant deaths of two occupants. The deceased were identified as eleven-year old Roberta Doeses and Josefina Booisen (28). Iilegal electricity connections the cause of 2018’s first shack fire in Kuisebmond A brick house and three shacks were destroyed by fire in Kuisebmond on Monday. It was the first shack fire recorded for 2018, but a shack fire occurred at the same location in October last year, highlighting the fire dangers associated with informal housing. All belongings of the owners of the shack and the brick house were lost in the fire. The fire apparently started in the brick home and spread to the shacks. At the time of the fire the owners of the structures were not home. Officer Kathindi confirmed there were no casualties in the fire of Tuesday and that the cause of the fire was investigated and illegal electricity connections were found to be the cause.

Valuable time was lost because a valve on the fire hydrant closest to the fire was closed and only the firemen had the key. When they arrived at the scene the valve was covered in a thick layer of sand and it first had to be dug open before the valve could be opened. A community member suggested if someone close by was always in possession of a valve key for fire hydrants in their respective areas the waste of time could be avoided.

Angler injures back as ski boat rides a wave Erwin Leuschner

An avid angler who went out on a fishing trip on a ski boat on Tuesday morning had to be rushed back to shore at Swakopmund and admitted to hospital, after injuring his back as the boat was riding a wave. The person since made a recovery. The angler was on a tour on the ski boat "Two Sea-Sons", which went out to catch snoek. "We launched at the Mole in the morning as usual", explained the owner Hakkie to namib times. The angler, who in the past had undergone a back operation, injured his back as the ski boat went over a wave en route to the fishing spot. "My crew stabilised the person on the boat and we immediately radioed E-Med Rescue 24 and turned around and returned to the Mole", explained the skipper. At the Mole the ambulance was already waiting for the patient to be evacuated and transported to hospital. An experienced paramedic on the scene complimented the boat crew for taking the right steps to stabilise the patient before he could be taken to hospital. It is especially spinal-, neck- and head injuries which are severely dangerous if an injured person is not stabilised in the correct manner prior to reaching medical evacuation, it was explained.

After the naming and shaming on social media of two individuals in Swakopmund who vandalised various road traffic signs during the festive season it promptly led to the culprits apologising and repairing the damage. T hese particular traffic signs (pictured) were vandalised a day before Christmas in the Vineta suburb. A concerned resident witnessed the culprits carrying a traffic sign early in the morning, after having pulled the sign poles from the ground. Initially, he

wanted to confront the duo personally, but their door went unanswered. Instead, he decided to name and shame them on social media and waited for them to come forward them selves. The post quickly received a lot of attention and was seen by a municipal employee

who took immediate action. "It was about 7 in the morning when I saw the two persons carrying one sign. When I drove to work, I saw about six more signs lying on the pavement", the resident told namib times. The signs included yield signs, stop signs, chevrons and keep left signs. Shortly after the incident, the municipal employee traced the residential address of the culprits and he subsequently confronted them about the damage they had done. They apologised and repaired the damage. All the signs are now back where they belong. Vandalism of municipal property, including road traffic signs, park benches and lamp-posts, usu-

Dear Sir/Madam, ARTICLE IN NAMIB TIMES ON FRIDAY 5 JANUARY 2018, ENTITLED 'GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS NEED TO GET RESPECT FOR THE PUBLIC' This article contains two photographs of GRN433 outside the Spar supermarket in Swakopmund. It alleges that the car was wrongly parked in a disabled parking bay. This car is allocated to me for my use and I take exception to the article. It is totally baseless and relies on assumptions that have not been verified. A closer look at the top photo of my car shows my wife behind it. She is currently wheelchair-bound and was sitting in her wheelchair, waiting to be assisted into the car after her groceries had been loaded. Your source did not care to take note that the car was being used by someone in a wheelchair. You also did not care to investigate further, which is your duty if you wish to be seen as a credible newspaper serving the public interest. You rushed to your own conclusions and wrongly condemned my wife and family, and indeed all government officials accused in your headline to the article. I demand an unconditional apology and your retraction of the accusation, placed in as prominent a position as the accusation levelled against us.

Yours faithfully, Professor Peter H. Katjavivi

During 2017 more than 100 shacks were destroyed in fires, and in the process a total of 500 people left homeless as a result. Rössing Marathon National Championship 2018 The Namibian Athletics' national marathon championship, the Rössing Marathon, takes place in Swakopmund at the Vineta North Sports Field on Saturday, 10 February 2018, and includes two running events open to the general public – the 42.2 kilometre full marathon, and the shorter 10 km run. For the first time in the event's 27-year history a half-marathon (21km) will be included in this years event. The first prize for the marathon is N$10 000 each for the men's and ladies open winners, with cash prizes for runners finishing second (N$5 000), third (N$2 000), fourth (N$1 000) and fifth (N$100) in the marathon – the day's main event. An extra N$1 000 cash bonus is up for grabs should the marathon records be broken in the open categories. The first prize for the half-marathon winners is N$3 000 each for the men's and ladies open winners. It is expected that the half-marathon will become a popular event on the Namibian athletics circuit. The 10km Uranium Relay for Erongo mine workers and the 5km Fun Walk, with interesting prizes in various categories, are popular events with proceeds collected in both events going to the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) for the fight against cancer in Namibia. Retired Olympic swimmer Zandberg offers swimming course for Namibians Erwin Leuschner Retired Olympic swimmer for South Africa, Gerhard Zandberg, recently held a one-week long swimming course in Swakopmund for participants from swimming schools in Windhoek as well as locals. About 35 participants took part in the event. The swimming course was held from 1 until 7 January 2018. The course was held at the Water cube in Swakopmund and concluded with a swim in the ocean.
