Time change yet to take effect at municipality Walvis Bay residents could not help to chuckle yesterday and just shake heads, when the siren sounded at 14:00 to announce the lunch hour. It was obvious someone slipped up to change the siren's time setting to summer time, after time change on Sunday.

Whales visit the Small Craft harbour We are officially in the season of Spring and to add the cherry on the cake, we recently had surprise visitors at the Small Craft Harbour to remind us of the changing of seasons. Four sighting of whales have been cited during the week in the Walvis Bay environment. The photo's attached depict the closest sighting of an alleged 'Humpback' whales species at the Port of Walvis Bay at the Small Craft Harbour right in front of the quayside wall. Increased sightings of whales have taken place at the Port of LĂźderitz within the last 10 days. More pictures on page 7

"Hopefully they get it right tomorrow", a pedestrian said smiling and shaking his head. A call to the municipal offices confirmed "the slip" occurred as the siren's time had not been adjusted yet. "We have to adjust the time, as the siren is preprogrammed and goes off automatically based on the time-set fed into its system". An official said the time would have been adjusted yesterday. Today it should be sounding on time. The siren is sounded once at 13:00 every week day to announce the lunch hour. The siren is also instrumental in alerting the fire brigade of a fire, when the siren is sounded three times by hitting a button located at the charge office of the Walvis Bay police station. ¡Sunday marked the end of an era for Namibia when the annual time change took place for the last time. Since 1994 Namibia adjusts to winter time every first Sunday of April and back to summer time on the first Sunday of September. A recent adoption of a new time act to replace the current Time Act of 1994 abolished winter time all together.

The boundaries have been shifted for Walvis Bay as ship repair hub on the West coast of Southern Africa. A floating dock arrived from Angola on Wednesday to undergo repair and maintenance locally on one of Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia's floating docks in the port of Walvis Bay. This is the first time in history a floating dock undergoes repair and maintenance here.

For EBHN this is not only a moment of pride for its quality of workmanship, but the fact that the floating dock belongs to the Angolan Government also highlights a new level of economic cooperation between Namibia and Angola. In a media statement EBHN states: "30 August 2017 was a very significant date for EBH Namibia (EBHN), in that it was the day that the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries (Pescangola) floating dry dock was docked in Walvis Bay for repairs. "For some time, we have recognised that strategically there are a number of pivotal synergies which exist between Pescangola and EBHN; and, on a national level, between neighbouring Angola and Namibia," says Hannes Uys, CEO of EBHN. As the preferred shipyard on the West coast of Africa, EBHN is already wellknown in the Angolan maritime and fisheries sectors, as many of the support vessels which service the West African offshore oil industry operate out of Angolan ports. "However, in terms of the floating dock repair, a project from an Angolan authority is truly a land mark and historic first for EBHN," comments Uys. "We certainly value the opportunity which this project presents; and, in so doing, further enhancing positive relations and cooperation between our neighbouring countries," he adds. From a logistical perspective, in order to get the dry dock to Walvis Bay, an EBHN team travelled to Luanda to ensure that the dock was seaworthy, and compliant with international towing regulations, enabling it to be towed the more than 900 n.m. (nautical miles) to Walvis Bay. The dry dock, known as the 'Boa Vista', had its basic hull constructed in 2011 by a shipyard in Ukraine. The dock then had all its systems completed by ENP in Portugal before being sold to the Angolan government. The dock - with dimensions of 62m x 21m - has the capacity to lift vessels with a docking weight of up to 2000 tons. "EBHN's exclusive mandate is to restore the dock to a good operational state. This will involve approximately 25 tons of steel repairs, corrosion protection and the commissioning of all systems. To do this, the dock will have to spend some 20 days at EBHN's Panamax-sized Namport 3 dry dock; and then a further 10 days berthed in Walvis Bay," explains Willie Esterhuyse, Commercial and Marketing Manager at EBHN. To observe the project in progress, Pescangola representatives will be visiting EBHN during the second week of scheduled repairs. "Even though this dry dock repair is 'first' in terms of repairing a dry dock at our facilities, our experience and competence makes us the ideal partner to conduct a repair project of this nature," says Esterhuyse. EBHN is very fortunate to have a full house in terms of repair projects currently; and looks forward to continue providing their customers with service excellence, Esterhuyse advises. Since its founding in 2006, EBHN has established an enviable reputation as a supplier of reliable, high-quality ship and offshore repair services. This has firmly established the company as the preferred shipyard on the West coast of Africa. "Our association with the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries is a momentous achievement for all involved; and speaks volumes in terms of how Pescangola and EBHN can partner synergistically and successfully to our mutual benefit. It also very clearly demonstrates how our two neighbouring countries and economies can collaborate going forward," EBHN's Uys enthuses. "It is indeed a very valued relationship that we foster in mutual respect. We hope accordingly to continue being of service to our Angolan associates in the future," he concludes.

Tom Alweendo discusses NDP 5 with Swakopmund residents Erwin Leuschner

Swakopmund residents recently had the opportunity to ask burning questions about the future of Namibia when the local NCCI branch organised a breakfast meeting with the Minister of Economic Planning, Tom Alweendo, and the UN Resident Coordinator, Anita Kiki Gbeho. The main topic of the meeting was about the National Development Plan 5 which was presented by Alweendo. "It's one thing to have a plan, especially if it is a good plan, but it is another thing to have it implemented," Alweendo said. Other topics included Namibia's five-year roadmap and the Strategic Development Goals (SDG) by the United Nations. During Alweendo's talk he gave a brief overview of NDP5, stating it is unique compared to previous NDP's. The national development plans aim to root out poverty. "We prioritised various things because as a country we have many targets and we need to prioritise. Alweendo admitted previous development plans lacked prioritization. According to Alweendo various individual ministries developed their strategic plans based on NDP5. This too was not the case with previous national development plans. The minister urged the private sector to become a part of the plan and be a driving force in its implementation. "The private sector is there to make money. Yes, that is true, but the private sector should not only make money but also be a part of society. The private sector has a responsibility," he continued. Alweendo also said that there is a "voice" suggesting that public funds are being abused. "It is something we cannot ignore and we need to work on it," he said. While talking about NDP5, Alweendo also mentioned the recent downgrading of Namibia's economic outlook by the rating agency Moodys. Although he downplayed the downgrade he said that "we (as Namibia) do not want to be where we are." "When we look back on Namibia's history (since independence) we can say there are a number of things where we have done well, but there are quite a number of challenges too," he continued. According to him Namibia progressed from an underdeveloped country to a middle-income country and because of this progress "things have become more difficult." "There are many middle-income countries and we have to compete with these countries internationally," he explained. The minister encouraged attendees to become innovative, especially during these financially troubling times. "We should not wait for conditions to improve. Conditions won't improve if you do nothing" he said. Adding: "We must persevere."

Small spider causes big ouch! Erwin Leuschner

Spiders. For many this is the stuff nightmares are made of - and sometimes for a good reason. Uis resident Piet van Rooyen was recently bitten by what is suspected to have been a Violin Spider. The spider got its name from the distinct pattern on the front end of its body that resembles a violin. Along with the sack spider, these two spiders account for the most spider bites in Namibia. Although not deadly, the effects of these spider bites can result in death if neglected. Spider bite victims endure considerable pain and often prolonged treatment is needed. "I am more scared of being bitten by a spider than by a snake. The effect of a snakebite is immediate and often you can also identify what type of snake bit you. With a spider bite the effects only start to show after a day.

In almost no instances would you know for sure when the spider bit you and worse – what type of spider venom are you dealing with", explained van Rooyen. Adding he can only guess the spider bit him on 26 August this year when he handled wood for a family braai. The bite itself was barely noticeable. It was only the next day when his hand started to swell severely and he felt immense pain. It was then that the bitemark started to become visible. Since, van Rooyen had to pay his doctor

Vehicle crashes into biltong kiosk A vehicle crashed through the biltong shop at the Walvis Bay Tourism Centre on the corner of 5th Road and Union Street early on Saturday morning. The driver of this Nissan Navara failed to stop at the two-way stop at the Centre and instead went straight on, over the pavement and slammed into the building. The vehicle went into the Biltong Shop and Kiosk and delivered total destruction. The Union Street and 5th Road two-way junction is particularly dangerous. Motorists are prone to speeding down Union Street and the juncture already saw a fatal crash some years ago when two people were killed there in a side-impact collision. It is also not the first time a vehicle crashes into the building complex of the tourism centre. Some months ago, the Walvis Bay municipal traffic department added a speed calming section to the

street surface as you approach the two-way. However, drivers now simply pull over into the oncoming lane to prevent driving over the speed calming section or they pull off the road and drive next to the road. This now increases the risk of head-on collisions. "I don't think this will be the last accident here", an onlooker said on Saturday. He urges the traffic department to intervene as a matter of urgency to make this two-way stop safer.

two visits. There is no anti-venom for spider bites like in the case of snakebites. The treatment usually involves a strong dose of antibiotics and in other cases the doctor needs to cut the bite wound open to drain puss. Of all spiders we have in Namibia, violin spider bites are the most common, explains Stuart Hebbard of the Swakopmund Snake Park. Compared to other venomous spiders like the button spider (of which the black widow is the most dangerous) or the sack spider, the violin spider bite is by majority more common. The violin spider almost resembles a daddy long leg,

he said. Violin spiders are commonly found in most parts of Southern Africa. They are quite small, are brownish with dark markings and have a violin-shape mark on the front end of the body. The venom is cytotoxic. "It is quite common for people to not even notice being bitten and only do so hours later," Hebbard continued. The doctor informed van Rooyen it can take up to six weeks for the wound to heal. Van Rooyen says the pain has reduced, but he takes good care of the wound to keep up the pace towards healing.

Coastal drivers receive defensive driving training Erwin Leuschner

Eight professional drivers of the coast recently concluded a two-day Defensive Driving Course in Swakopmund. The participants included drivers of West Coast Safety Initiative, Cars & Guides and the emergency service E-Med Rescue. The course was offered by DriveWell. drivers. "If your attitude is right you would not drink and drive. If your attitude is right you would not overtake on a blind crest," he stated as examples. He also encouraged the drivers of these institutions, especially of E-Med Rescue, to apply defensive driving as best as they possibly can. Smith concluded by congratulating the participants saying that this is the first time that all participants scored more than 90% during the course.

"It is far more valuable to apply defensive driving techniques than advanced driving," explains Nico Smith, co-owner of DriveWell. Smith handed over certificates to all participants of the course. The course covered both theoretical and practical components and included a session in a "driver training simulator". According to Smith, who is a former police officer, Namibia's high road accident rate can in almost all instances be attributed to the attitude of

The instructors were Floris Smith and Karel Olivier.

Protecting Your Home from the Outside Walk around the exterior of your home and scout out its weaknesses. The best way to protect your home from the outside is to survey it with the eyes of a burglar. If you can easily tell that a window could be pried open, a thief will definitely be able to come to the same conclusion. You can even contact your local police department and they'll provide a courtesy home assessment that can help you identify your home's weak spots. While you're checking for vulnerable spots, take note of any expensive electronics, art, or furniture that is easily spotted through windows. You don't have to redecorate your entire home to keep expensive items out of sight, but it doesn't hurt to make small adjustments where you can. No need to tempt thieves any more than you have to! Keep shrubbery around entrances and walkways trimmed. The last thing you want is to make it easier for a thief to hide when attempting to break in, so eliminate his options for hiding spots. He may only need a few minutes of cover to make his entry but with no place to hide while doing it, he's less likely to even try. You could even plant thorny shrubs by your windows to make it not only difficult to break in, but painful! Build a fence. If you don't have one already, a fence can be an excellent way to keep unwanted visitors off your property. Open chain-link or ornamental metal fencing tend to be preferable and are ideally secured into concrete to prevent lifting. Solid fences can be easier to climb and offer thieves a place to hide, though some homeowners prefer them for privacy and noise reduction. You can better secure them by having sharp pointed tops or, if you don't mind rough barbed wire fencing. Stow expensive items like grills, cars, and

bikes in the garage. Though it may seem like a hassle to roll out the grill for every barbecue, leaving it out makes it an easy target for thieves. They don't even have to enter your home to grab it, and if it's got wheels it can be a breeze to sneak away with. If your area only offers street parking, always lock your car and be sure to park in a well-lit area. Use curtains on garage and basement windows. Chances are these areas don't need the sunlight, so put up curtains or blinds for privacy and protection. Stowing your outdoor valuables only does so much good if they're constantly on display! Install motion sensor lighting around your home, especially at entrances. Shine a spotlight on a potential intruder before he can even touch your doors or windows by adding extra lighting with motion detectors at entrances and especially dark corners of your home. If you live in an apartment, ask your landlord to install sufficient lighting in walkways and halls to eliminate dark corners. Get to know your neighbors. Crime tends to be lower in tight-knit communities because neighbors are more likely to look out for each other and can easily spot a stranger. Your neighbors can be one of your best assets in home crime prevention because they offer extra eyes and an outside perspective. Plus if they have a different work or school schedule from yours, they might be around during the day when you're away and can alert you to any suspicious activity that may occur in your absence. Keep your yard free of toys, tools, and ladders. A yard littered with toys signals to a thief that the house may be filled with equally interesting entertainment, like game consoles, tablets, or laptops. A ladder or toolbox left out even briefly for an afternoon can give an opportunistic thief help in gaining access to your house.

Coal stockpile smoulders

One of the coal stockpiles in the port of Walvis Bay started to smoulder yesterday morning and required workers to dose it with large quantities of water. Seeing smoke on the coal stockpiles is relatively common and water sprayers are used frequently to supress coal dust pollution and to keep the stockpiles' temperature low in order to avoid fires. However, judged from the smoke and steam yesterday morning, it was quite clear this incident was out of the ordinary and quick reaction was required. Coal is used in Namibia by Nampower for power generation (von Eck power station Windhoek) and by the copper smelter at Tsumeb. Namport celebrates Womens month Namport female staff joined the rest of the world on Thursday, 24 August to celebrate the International Women's Day under the theme, “Blazing men's world in heels.

Clad in overalls and some in denim and high heels, the Namport women took to the port terminal not only to celebrate their contribution at work but also acknowledge their importance at the workplace. The photo shoot is meant to be a tribute for all the hard work and tremendous jobs that make the female employees part of the team. The event is part of a series of planned interventions that aim at bringing all Namport women together to celebrate the extra ordinary role women play in a male dominated industry. We are proud that seventeen percent of our total workforce are females and contribute to the Namport asset growth of more than N$5 Billion, whereas the world's maritime female workforce is a mere two percent. Mr Immanuel Hanabeb, Executive: Commercial (Acting), 'We are proud of our female staff growth in our work force. Our Namport values of being Caring, Committed and Connected steers our vision and growth which is linked to the country's NDP5 vision.' Twenty-eight percent of Namport management team are filled by women as we continue to see growth in more females taking up leadership positions. As one of Namibia's strategic resource in driving the country's vision in becoming a logistics hub, Namport has taken a deliberate effort to change the statistics by giving women an opportunity to advance in this formerly male-dominated sector. One of its success stories changing this narrative is the appointment of Ms Ipupa Kasheeta as the first female Operations Manager to lead the Bulk & Break Bulk Terminal since 2012 and now the Syncrolift Manager. On the marine side, Ms Loide Negongo has made waves as the first female unreserved Tug master and is currently working towards obtaining a Pilot Licence. As part of our strategy to ensure that we have skilled workforce for the future, we have placed emphasis on developing skills through our 'Catch them Young' program, an initiative that offers secondary school nautical studies programme at Lawhill Maritime School in Simons Town, South Africa. This programme serves to attract young people to a maritime career by exposing them to nautical studies during the latter half of their secondary school studies (Grade 10 to 12). So far we have 53 bursary graduates of which 24 are female. Currently we have 8 bursary holders of which 2 are female studying towards Bachelor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at NUST, 4 are attending Cadet Training in South Africa and 2 female learners will soon be completing their High School at Lawhill Maritime School in South Africa. Namport has signed an MOU with the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden to enable the port authority to tap into the institution's vast wealth of knowledge and information on marine and maritime affairs. Underway, we have two female employees completing their Masters in Education and Training in Maritime studies and one female employee completing her Masters in Port Management. In further celebration of women's month, we look forward to hosting H.E, Madame Monica Geingos, First Lady of the Republic of Namibia at our Spring High Tea workshop, where she will deliver the key note address to inspire our female workforce.

Namibia makes end to winter time Farewell winter time. Namibians at 02:00 on Sunday will adjust their watches forward by one hour from winter time to summer time. This would be the last time to do so, as Namibia officially abolished winter time and would in the future stay at summer time which is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2). The majority of Namibians in 2016 favoured summer time as the standard time for the country throughout the year and a bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament recently to replace the current Namibian Time Act which made provision since 1994 for summer time and winter time. Chris Wildblood Excellent idea, you were only doing it to copy the South Africans anyway. Shame we can't have some similar sense here in the UK. Liz Schoombee Will schools have to adjust their times now, so children don't go to school in the

dark (thinking of those who have to walk)... Wolfgang Hinz Let's hope the rest of the world follows suite. Peter Odendaal what do you mean - that the rest of the world should place themselves in the wrong time - zone geographically?

Reckless driving by drunken drivers a nightmare to residents of Masilo street in Mondesa Residents living on Masilo Street in Mondesa in Swakopmund say they are living in fear at night, especially between 23:00 and 03:00, because of vehicles which frequently crash through their boundary walls. To make matters worse, these reckless drivers often drive off without taking responsibility for the damage or even inquire if anyone was injured. The owner of a house on erf 1771 Masilo Street, Rosina Witbooi expressed her utter dismay this week over the fact her boundary wall was already hit by vehicles ten times. The damage and repair costs are considerable, leave alone the safety hazard. According to Witbooi on Saturday morning, at around 02:00, she was again woken by a loud sound she knows now all too well now can be nothing other than a car crash. Kasupi This is a serious problem in Mondesa but it's only because the town council don't want to listen to proposals given to them buy the community. I once suggested to them to put up a speed bump at the and of masilo street and they were not willing. Again I proposed them to put up barriers in front of my house without success. All I do if this things happen I inform the insurance and make them aware of the negligence from the town council side. After all they are the one that issues fitness licenses to those shabeens. They should also think of safety in term of traffic flow.

Poor Swakopmund is rather bloodied and beaten at the moment. We have had two shocking attacks on elderly people resulting in three deaths and another terrible fire in the middle of town, (the 5th in about 35 years). Sincere sympathy goes to all businesses, which suffered from the fire but especially to the family members of those who died, as we are all part of the whole and we feel and understand the pain they have suffered. As a result of these tragedies, our community has united against the brutal atrocities and the weakness of the law, and protests and petitions have been organised. They must be supported. But each of us now needs a more realistic approach to our personal safety. Walk around your home on the outside. Check your windows and ask yourself how you would get in if you did not have a key. Look at low walls which offer access to your roof or second story. Neilo Van Wyk Poor Mondesa and DRC where people are killed almost daily. Poor residents of Tamariskia where loud music and busses at all hours of the night are the order of the day. Poor non white and non economical viable people who are also sadly uneducated and have no voice or platform to share their swan song. Poor exploited and vulnerable and desperate workers abused and taken advantage of by businesses here at the coast. Poor consumers getting a raw deal with expired goods and poor service and payments for toilets in centres where u spend lots of money on businesses and still have to pay for comfort breaks. Lament that song? Gert These iniatives are praise worthy, but can only really work if ALL of the community is involved. The current initiative seems to exclude some and is concentrated on a certain part of town. Unfortunately it seems only certain crime and accidental issues (like fire in town and the sad crime ons elderly citizens) are mentioned, this focussing these initiatives only on the whiter shades of gray. We need to involve all. 99 % of inhabitants of Mondesa and the suburbs worry about crime as much as Swakop proper's citizens. Let us be frank and serious about what is to do..... Annelize Strydom Than I would suggest those other parts in town should do what the other parts in town do. Get neighborhood watch & WhatsApp. I would think that is the point here. First see to your own neighborhood than the town will a unity will become better. Gert Ja Annelize, ek is seker jou plan is die beste. Sluit my in wanneer ons as een kan saamstaan teen die probleme wat ons ervaar. Ian J Izaacs Well said Gert my sentiment fir a long time now. Maybe this group should re look at what and who they stand for. Its all about inclusion as a united Swakopmund. An injury to one Swakopmunder should be an injury to all Swakopmunders irrespective of your neighbourhood Eish.. Hans-Peter Steinbach Everybody talks the talk about neighbourhood watch, but nobody walks the walk. Swakopmund population of 60,000, and just over 100 neighbourhood watch members. I have mentioned on few social places that people should join, What happens - an "eardeafening silence"."Die mense is te flippin slapgat" But if something goes wrong, the first instance they phone is the neighbourhood watch (like the cat in the tree at the Casino) Geinus Melissa Swakopmund should also get CCTVs.. Most thugs moved from windhoek to the coast because here they are less likely to be caught.

Application of car guard policy now critical In an attempt to find a prompt solution to the issue of car guards in Swakopmund, the Police Public Relations Committee (PPRC) decided to fasttrack its implementation of a policy developed particularly to deal with car guards and how the proper control of car guards can curb crime. This was announced this week during the PPRC meeting. The issue surrounding little or no control over car guards in Swakopmund has been a concern for many years. Currently, anybody in possession of a reflective jacket can be a car guard. Whilst many car guards have been in the business for many years and are earning an honest living, the lack of control is exploited by criminals too. These bad elements act as car guards, to get an opportunity to harass people and steal whenever possible. "It is usually the newcomers who harass people and who result in bona fide car guards getting a bad name. During this recent meeting specific questions were raised over the car guard policy. The policy was approved by the Swakopmund Town Council in March 2016, but implementation lacks. Maggie Petersen Yes. Give them compliment where applicable. In tobias hainyeko str are car guards that are friendly/helpful. Unfortunately the non car guards as in the picture in front of pep stores do also "work"in that street Zak Venter In Nathanael maxuilili street where my office is , is unbearable as the young car guards harass my clients on a daily basis, I would appreciate it if they were monitored and controlled. They do whatever they want and work whenever they feel like it. But quick to want money for doing zero work

MEDIA RELEASE:

Standard Bank paying it forward with Bursary Scheme Over the years, Standard Bank has taken pride in rewarding academic excellence, as well as aiding deserving students create a better future for themselves through its Corporate Social Investment Bursary Scheme. This year alone, the Bank is invested an impressive N$1-million in the Bursary Scheme that has gone to service the academic needs of 7 worthy students, with the notion that university education should not just be a privilege limited to those who can afford, but also who come from disadvantaged back-

grounds with potential to excel academically. This year's recipients are Petrus Nathinge, Ndahafa Alex, Elrich Tsauseb, Bianca Mungunda, Anza Lombard, Andreas Shiimi and Felicia Mwenyo. The Bank recently hosted a luncheon to check in with the students, who were all too happy to report on their progress.

Standard Bank bursary student Petrus Nathinge

One such student is Bianca Mungunda, a 2nd year Actuarial Science student at the University of Cape Town. As an exemplary student throughout her formal schooling years, Mungunda completed her High School with an astounding 52 points; however she admitted that finances always proved to be a hindrance. “Although I received a bursary from Windhoek Gymnasium, it only covered a portion of my fees, leaving the rest to my parents. I have a number of siblings whose education my parents also have to pay for. Apart from this, there are the usual expenses any family needs to deal with that made meeting my school fees due date difficult to meet. I remember there were many times I did not receive my report for a particular academic year because my school fees were not paid in full yet,” Mungunda said explaining the financial difficulties that befell her and her family while she was still in High School Faced with the knowledge that the course she wanted was not offered in Namibia, and the financial burden that her parents would have to face, she decided to apply for a bursary from the bank. I knew that my parents would not be able to afford my education... The Standard Bank bursary has

changed my life in so many ways. Firstly, it has taken what would have been a huge burden off the shoulders of my parents! Tertiary education is expensive. It is a privilege to be able to not have to worry about how you will pay for your education, not only that, but the support and opportunities we receive through the vacation work and mentors in the bank is a blessing,” she beamed. She added that the fact that she is guaranteed a job once she graduates is also another blessing because a lot of young people with qualifications are unable to get jobs in these harsh economic climates. “I would like to thank Standard Bank for entrusting me to be an ambassador of such a prestigious bank. Thank you for allowing me to pursue my dreams and supporting me not only financially, but in all other aspects. I will not disappoint and will keep moving forward in all I do,” she stressed. Fellow bursary holder Petrus Nathinge was equally elated with his study aid, because he too had to study Actuarial Science, which would have been a financial burden on his parents as they financially support a number of their relatives. “I come from a very loving household and have 5 siblings. My parents are extremely hardworking and that trait has been passed

onto their offspring. They both come from poor households and have successfully made it out of poverty. Unfortunately, some of my parent's family members still live in poverty in Angola. My parents as a result have to care for them financially,” he explained. Nevertheless, his parents encouraged him to chase after his dreams, vowing that they would do all they can to ensure that he completed his studies. While he said that it was endearing to know that his parents would support him, he did not want them burdened by the finances of his studies. “I scoured the internet in search of bursaries. I applied for just about everything and anything, hoping for a positive response. To my surprise and relief, Standard Bank contacted me and informed me that I was one of the lucky recipients of a Standard Bank Bursary,” he recounted. While he thought the bursary would only come with financial support, he said he was pleasantly surprised to find that they have a holistic approach where they support in all aspects. “Standard Bank has impacted my life immensely ever since. Not only can my parents and I rest with a peaceful mind, knowing that I am taken care of financially, but the Bank has also exposed me to different areas

Standard Bank bursary student Bianca Mungunda of the workings of a Bank through the vacation work we are offered to do. The various support plat-forms from the Bank offers assist me in times of need. The extremely kind, patient and caring staff in charge of the Bursary are easily reachable and check up on us to make sure that all is in order,” a delighted Nathinge said. Knowing he has a job lined up when he graduates is among his most appreciated benefits of being a recipient of the Bank's bursary scheme. “I would like to inspire students, in a similar position to mine, to never

give up on their dreams. I would like to encourage them and assure them that their hard work will pay off. Someone will see their potential, just as Standard Bank has seen mine. I am extremely blessed and fortunate to have been awarded this Bursary by Standard Bank. I am thankful and honoured that the Bank continues to see and believe in me, my potential and my abilities. I will continue to work tirelessly to make the Bank proud. I will ensure that the Bank reaps the benefits of their investment in me, as they so rightfully deserve,” he concluded.

Breyton Poole Sets new High Jump Namibia Bowls Team to defend their African States Bowls Records in Namibia The South African High jump sensation, Breyton Poole, wowed crowds on Saturday, when he set new Outdoor and Indoor Namibian Open High Jump records in Swakopmund. The 17-year old Poole, had arrived in Swakopmund earlier, to try and break the longstanding outdoor record of 2, 18, and the indoor record of 1,96. He was accompanied by his coach, Namibian, Bennie Schlechter, and his dad, Herman Poole, who is an active, longdistance athlete - He got bronze in the 1 500 meter at the regional championships on Saturday. Poole's mother is a long jump athlete. When Poole went onto the field, conditions were not very favorable. It was very cold and windy, but, despite the challenges, Poole succeeded with flying colours and set the bar at 2, 20. Poole's record was recorded as an Open outdoor record. His attempt at the indoor record was witnessed by many enthusiasts and athletes, at the Championships Prize Giving Ceremony in the Dome on Saturday evening – another extreme challenge, because he could not wear spikes, and had to approach the bar in tackies, and without measured approach distance – but he did it! After a few tense moments and two failed attempts, he flew over the bar with ease. He eventually set the new indoor open record at 2,05 – and said that he would be back. He expressed his delight with his performance afterwards, saying it had not been easy – but he

was thankful that he could set the new record. Herman Poole at the event thanked Namibians for their kindness and hospitality – and said they were very proud of their son, Breyton, and his achievements. He lauded Breyton as a hard worker and someone who kept his eye on his goal. The organiser of the Erongo Regional Athletic Championships, and Swakop Striders Athletics coach, Hennie Horn, said it had been a privilege, and a very special event, to have had so many reigning Namibian high jump record holders under one roof, as had been the case on Saturday night in the Dome. He explained that Poole's records were regarded and recorded as Open Records since he was not a Namibian. The Events Manager of the Dome, Buttons Heyns, afterwards said it had been an exceptionally great event – hosting so many record holders and recording so many new records. He said Poole had been an inspiration and had definitely been the star of the evening. Poole's next career focus is set on the World Junior Athletics Championships, for which he has already qualified. Then he is also working steadily towards qualifying for the Olympic Games, within the next three years. He has to clear the bar at 2, 29 to qualify for the Olympic Games – "so, only 0, 05 to go". Poole says it is important to him to inspire others through his sport, too. He certainly inspired many Namibians over the past few days.
