8 NAMIB TIMES
A 200-ton crane of Walvis Bay Plant & Tool Hire tipped over at the parking area of the municipality of Walvis Bay Over the lunch hour, crushing three vehicles as its boom came crashing down. The crane was removing the metal frame of a marquee tent from the civic centre's main lawn when the crane tipped. Mariette Brand Ja shame! it's heart broken…even for Plant & Tool Hire…you build, you get accidents, these stuff happens in the world, but I must also say that we use Plant and Tool Hire all the time, and there doing one great hell of a job all the time on time! NO complains this side! Plant and Tool Hire is doing an excellent job in Walvis Bay among our community. I'm just glad that NO one was badly injured. A life is more important! Lukas Lucky Simon U talking sense... Llewellyn Denzil Bjorn Jeneke Thanx 4 saying it loud Mariette Brand Teorikus Izaak Yes they do. Rodger Boon All the clever dicks out there who talk about ground assesment, I am sure this was all done as per safety standards, the crane had one more lift to do and had already done a couple before the pipe had burst causing the ground to give way so please get your facts straight before giving your shitty remarks as it seems you all know such a lot but actually know f...........all Jan A J Kruger The pipe collapsed under the downward pressure on it, it did not burst before the collapse. Rodger Boon Mr Kruger I fully understand that the pipe must have burst due to the weight, very strange it did not burst earlier in the lifting operations though.???? Jan A J Kruger Most likely the angle of the boom at that point at an angle over the point of collapse. But I agree with you, too many assumptions without fact. The investigation will hopefully clear all up. Unfortunate
incident. If I did not see it I would have thought it was an earthquake as the entire Civic Centre rumbled and shook. Luckily minimal injuries. Mark Clark Rodger Boon the pipe doesn't have to burst straight away, it can build under pressure and over a length of time it cannot maintain its integrity and will collapse. Besides why are they operating a 200t crane over a water pipe and only on small wooden blocks for the support arms?! Be good to see full investigation reports Francois Schoeman Ni lus vi praat ni, maar lat ek jou vertel.... dit was n ongeluk en niks meer..... die operator het en sou als volgens die boek gedoen het en a bietjie m e e r. . . n i k s m e t nalatigheid te doen ni..... jy praat van die baas van dai kraan wat sy drywer vertrou met a paar mil... werkstik.... da is ni meer tyd vi rond.. in vandag se lewe ni.... eks net bly niemand is beseer ni. Jerome Martino Weird things happen in WB.... if shops don't burn down without a reason,,, cars get smashed without driving hope the person recover soonest. Hastings Khasi Only if all safety procedures were properly followed this couldn't have happened. ..... Let this be a good lesson to the rest....
Johan Thiart Hahaha bra chill jou guava moenie laat die mense jou so omkrap nie lol Sbusiso Gerald Ndlangamandla Mhlanga Risk assessment this risk assessment that, just a few indication so that shows that the planning of this crane lifting activity was not sufficient. I believe that before any crane may be erected on a certain area the following shall be verified and conducted first, rigging study (crane strength, vs loads) geological study to determine the ground strength, area plan lay out to determine any possible trenches (cables and water). By the way who am I to put
emphasis on the should haves the damage is done. You all just have to say thanks there are no fatalities. How I wish I can be part of the investigation. Hastings Khasi That is the total results when you skip safety procedures and opt for shortcuts... Hansie Claassen Dont they had a floor plan then they would have seen the pipeline its so important Jacques Oosthuizen Although this is very sad, I have to agree. Checking the ground strengh / layout is crucial when performing this kind of lifts. Eloise Diergaardt Im with you 100%. Wish you were part of the investigation team clearly you know what you're talking about. All these other buggers can say is DIT WAS N ONGELUK. Sbusiso Gerald Ndlangamandla Mhlanga Dankie Eloise Diergaardt. Sade Van Wyk Praise God no one was hurt. Mense wees asb versigtig waar jule sien kraane operate. dit kon lelik was kinders sit gewoontlik in kar as mama die rekeninge gaan betaal of papa wag vir mama in die kar. Parkeer asb ver van waar mense kraan werke doen Dukso Andrew Risk assessment wasn't conducted. The whole incident has to be investigated comprehensively, and findings be made public for all to learn and eventually preventing re-ocurrences in the future. Gerdt Iikela Proper risk assessment was not done before comencing with at task. Ground stability is always important when setting up mobile. They were supposed to consult the town Planners / Engineers for any potential underground pipe and trenches. Stephanie Boon Pipe
burst while they were busy working! Crane was working there all day before accident and as they were removing last beam pipe burst! Nothing company could've done to prevent this ! Read article again! David Prasao' Shikoyeni Sound very technical.. Mark Clark Stephanie Boon there's a good few reasons why the pipe burst! And why were they using a 200t crane over water pipes? Setup on pavers and only using wooden blocks on a 200t crane under the support arms?! Disaster waiting to happen....and it did Anthea Lawrence Liewer karre beskadig as mense se lewens.. Dankie Vader u het die mense bewaar. Terri Ann We had one in Melbourne came right off the top of a building last year. Destroyed a few cars but no one was hurt! It seemed to fall slowly. Apologiseman M Tox Nauta Mostly some accident when happen can't be stopped, people stop complaint about the operator! Erickson Moongo True that! Apologiseman M Tox Nauta We always end up complaint about driver or operator but none like accident to happen! Erickson Moongo They use to complain to the things they dnt have experience in!! Cheukai Irvin This is what happens if you employ non experianced drivers how can you take all those boom sections without having counterweights i wonder if he did his pre checklist the crane gives u a warning sound its now on limits but he just ignore overide the crane just to do the job. Thiz are things we experiance as operators only to arrive on site findin out thr ordered a small crane just becoz ther dnt wana
pay for a big crane. Charles Steinar Cloete Rumenicke Eiseb kyk hu bja slim mense ht namibia, jistes as ons nt dai slim kon gbruik tot die land se benefit was ons nu al a 1st world country.. As I knw ths day was already set, we can say this nd that but whether we like it or not this s done. Wat ales gebeur s klar deur di here so gestel. Maurice Connor Wow, if only they followed any of the safety rules they do while working in port... Shamoh Kambinda Ringer did not do he's 5 second risk assessment before doing the job and or somehow he/her missed he's calculations Hannes Swanepoel Wonder whos insurance will pay for the cars? Pandu David This is hectic, but the question is, If those cars are not insured will they pay the owners. Rickey Ricardo Fernando Nou sal bja geld uit gehal word om die kare terug te koop wat beskadig is, dank God vir veiligheid. Melis Namaseb They must always do risk assessment befor doing work. Thanks god no life s were lost. Herrie Louw Dont look as if the stabilisers was fully deployed. Steven Kennedy Mununga Guys read and understand as to why the crane tipped over. You dont have to be a scientist to know that water has immense force.
João da Costa Hence risk assessment is essential prior any task. Jan A J Kruger The problem is all and sundry using this parking area without prior risk assessment and determing where services are. We find it often that those who erect tents simply drive their pegs through our interlocks without consulting us first, without determining where the electrical supply cables and water lines are. I sometimes look out of my office window in the Civic Centre freezing in anguish as they can be electrocuted if they hit a cable. Mariette Brand together!....one helping hand can go that extra mile..... :) Henry Abniel Ooh hu was the operator in that crane? I'm disappointed thats my company crane before. Beau Mayongo Majola U guys are judgemental og julle was skars daar ongelukke gebeur oorals. Alan Botha Assholes look for underground servertudes before placing any mobile crane. Fritz Dwinger Safty first!!! Micheal Janse van Vuuren I was there we would have parked there but my husband saw the chains coming down and put our car in reverse.. Dereck Shikonde Karadu God is great full.
Concerned Rossmund Resident I was so surprised when I drove into town this afternoon (Monday 29 August) to see that the Police were busy installing the road block. My immediate thoughts were, but the “ Long Weekend” and the “End of the Month”” have passed – so now!! Aah!! The schools are starting. My problem is not really the road block, I know the Police have their job to do and their reasons for installing the same. What does bother me is that no one checks the condition of the road shoulders or worries about the damage being done to them by the numerous heavy vehicles. One really has to pick your way off the tar especially on the outgoing side. There are numerous sharp rocks protruding from the sand which I think is definitely not good for your tyres, especially if you want to drive to Windhoek. The damage caused by driving over this terrain could be life threatening to say the least. Can the relative authorities please do something about this. Thanks from a concerned Rossmund Resident
