He mentioned that there were participants from Google, Facebook and other companies in the meeting who gave us their views on what could be the way forward to check this menace. “While ever ybody agreed that advertisement is okay, at the same time fleecing a consumer of data is unwarranted.” “I think it is a serious problem , but let me admit that not very clear solution emerged of the discussion. It is one of those problems, of which we have to have some technological solutions,” Sharma said.

New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI): Gold prices bounced Rs 85 to Rs 30,500 per 10 grams today following uptick in festive and wedding season demand from jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market amid signs of a strong global trend. Silver too rebounded Rs 100 to Rs 42,900 per kg on higher off-take by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders attributed the recovery in gold prices to the surge in demand as reflected in festive and wedding season sales, and firm global cues. Globally, gold rose 0.15 per cent to USD 1,266.30 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity recovered by Rs 85 each to Rs 30,500 and Rs 30,350 per 10 grams, respectively.

standard rate, which is 18 per cent,” he said. The items which are very important, which are of use to a large cross-section of people and common man are pegged at 6 per cent, he said, adding that 6 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and a higher rate for demerit goods has been proposed. Former finance minister P Chidambaram on Monday criticised the proposed multiple-rate GST structure as “disastrous”. “We sincerely hope that we do not misinterpret the design of standard, standard minus and plus rates of GST. We can have 20 rates”. “It will be disastrous and that cannot be GST, it will be fooling the country,” Chidambaram had said. Emphasising that the bankruptcy law together with GST will bring in a lot of dynamism into Indian economy, Das said the government is determined to implement GST from April 1, 2017.

NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI): Asserting that the government is determined to implement GST from the next fiscal, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das on Tuesday expressed confidence that the revenue neutral rate structure will be decided the next month. “The rate structure on which there is a lot of discussion going on at the moment with the GST Council and also in the public domain... will get resolved in the next meeting of GST Council in the first week of November. Maybe, one or two sittings, it should come to a conclusion,” Das said at an Assocham event here. Dismissing criticisms, he said the rate structure has been prepared based on “a very practical basis”. “The rate has to be necessarily revenue neutral. You cannot have a rate structure where governments run into huge deficit... Therefore, GST rates are worked out in such a manner that bulk of commodities are under the

was removed last evening as Chairman of Tata Sons, the main holding firm of over USD 100-billion conglomerate, while his predecessor Ratan Tata was recalled as an Interim Chairman. “They (Tatas) have pleaded to be heard before the court passes any interim order like stay on Mistry’s sacking,” a source said. Earlier there was confusion over reports that Mistry had filed caveats, which was denied by his office. A statement from Mistry’s office said, “A caveat is a notice filed by a party fearing legal action seeking notice before action. Tatas have filed caveats seeking notice from Cyrus Mistry fearing legal action. Cyrus has not filed any caveats. He has already made a statement that such concerns are misplaced at this stage.”

Mumbai, Oct 25 (PTI): In a highly volatile trade, the rupee maintained its edge against the American currency for the second day today and appreciated by a modest 3 paise to close at 66.82. Trading has been thin and confined to extremely narrow range in the absence of any market moving factors even as resurgent dollar remained in spotlight on the currency market. Sluggish domestic equities and persistent capital outflows largely pressurised the Indian unit, a forex dealer said. The home currency opened substantially lower at 66.93 from Monday’s closing level of 66.85 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market as sustained dollar demand from importers fairly weighed on trade. However, some dollar selling by corporates and bank predominantly helped the rupee to recover towards the tail-end trade to settle at 66.82, revealing a gain of 3 paise, or 0.04 %.

view that under GST, there will be national single tax rate on each product and “that is where the big gains are”. He added: “A lot of people think that they have identified single tax rate across commodities. But the bigger part is single tax rate on every product across entire country. There is no tax theorem that two rates are better than four.” He further said, “If you do a single rate (16 or 18 per cent) then some of rates you will have to bring very far off. Obviously, then there will be inflation on those particular commodities (with lower rates of tax). There are products which have 3 per cent rate of tax. Those if you take all the way to 16 or 18 per cent then there will be inflation implications.”

Mumbai/New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI): The boardroom battle at Tata group today appeared heading for a legal tussle with Tatas filing caveats in the Supreme Court, Bombay High Court and the National Company Law Tribunal against Cyrus Mistry moving for relief against his ouster as Chairman. In a bid to prevent Mistry from getting any ex-parte relief from any legal forum, Tata Sons and a Tata Trust, among others, filed the caveats that they should be heard before grant of any relief to the ousted Chairman. The petitions included one by Ratan Tata and others against Mistry. Soon after his removal last evening, sources had said Mistry may challenge the decision by Tata Sons’ board to replace him with Ratan Tata. In a dramatic and sudden turn of events Mistry

and demerit goods. There is ongoing debate whether GST, which is to be rolled out from April 1 next year, should be a single rate regime or should it have multiple rates. Earlier in the day, former finance minister P Chidambaram said the proposed multiple rate GST structure will be “disastrous” and nothing more than same old VAT rates in a “new shape”. “We sincerely hope that we do not misinterpret the design of standard, standard minus and plus rates of GST. We can have 20 rates. It will be disastrous and that cannot be GST, it will be fooling the country,” Chidambaram told an interactive session with IIM Calcutta students on economic reforms. Panagariya, on the other hand, expressed the

New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI): Brushing aside criticism, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya supported the proposed 4-rate Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure saying it will help in dealing with any possible surge in inflation or revenue loss. Panagariya also favoured continuation of cess, dismissing criticism that it would dilute the original idea of a single unified rate. Explaining the rationale behind the proposed four rates under GST, he said: “...big gains from GST will be because of having a single rate across any given product geographically.” The GST Council is discussing a proposal to have four-slab tax structure for GST with 6, 12, 18 and 26 per cent along with an additional cess for luxury
