failed to score a single goal actively in the tournament, as the 1-1 tie with Ireland was awarded by opponents’ own goal. Ireland finished third with four points and became the last team into the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placers. In the do-or-die match against Belgium, Sweden played all out but could not get the luck. Only five minutes into the game, forward Marcus Berg squandered the best scoring chance for Sweden. Victor Lindelof ’s free-kick fell kindly inside the penalty box for the Panathinaikos striker, who

volleyed goalwards in close range, but Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois’ positioning was good enough to palm the ball away. Belgium gradually gained the upper hand with Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard leading the attack. Striker Romelu Lukaku made several solo runs in the second half to press hard on Sweden’s defence. Even a tie would sent Sweden home and things went worse in the 84th minute when Belgium midfielder Nainggolan walked on to Hazard’ s cutback from the byline and unleashed a

Vardy extends contract with Leicester London, Jun 23 (IANS): England striker Jamie Vardy has rejected a lucrative offer from English Premier League (EPL) giants Arsenal and has agreed to a four-year extension of his contract with current club Leicester City. Vardy was the target of a bid from Arsenal worth 1,20,000 pounds per week last month following his dream run with Leicester City last season which saw them clinch their first ever EPL title. The 29-year-old had scored 24 goals during that campaign which saw him named as the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year in May. Leicester City had also offered him a lucrative amount, 100,000 pounds a week for a new contract -- a huge jump from his earlier salary of 60,000 pounds per week. Securing Vardy’s services for the next season will give Leicester City a huge boost as they prepare to embark on their first-ever Champions League campaign. “Both parties hope that this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie’s future and confirm his long term commitment to Leicester City Football Club,” the club said in a statement on Thursday.

IWF may ban Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus from Rio Olympics B U DA P E S T, J un 2 3 ( A g en c i e s ) : R u s s i a , Kazakhstan and Belarus face one-year suspensions from international weightlifting competition following the retesting of samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, which may prevent lifters from those countries competing at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in August. The International Weightlifting Federation on Wednesday said the final decisions on the possible bans will be made after the International Olympic Committee makes a definitive ruling on the retests. The three countries are facing bans because three or more positive cases from each were discovered during the retests. So far, 20 weightlifting cases have been found among the 55 positives in retesting of samples from all sports which the IOC has reported, including 32 from Beijing and 23 from London. Four Olympic gold medalists from Kazakhstan and medalists from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have already been provisionally suspended by the IWF. Konta stuns Kvitova at Eastbourne

L on d o n , J un 2 3 (Agencies): British No 1 Johanna Konta continued her remarkable surge over the past 12 months by shocking twotime Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to reach the quarter-finals of the Aegon International in Eastbourne. Konta, who is the first Briton to be seeded at Wimbledon since Jo Durie in 1984, produced her latest stunning result by fighting back from a set down to win 5-7 6-4 6-0 against the Czech. The 17th seed for Wimbledon has come to the fore over the last year, having reached the last 16 at the US Open and the semi-finals at the Australian Open. Konta, 25, has shot up the world ranking from 146th to 18th, elevating her into the highest echelons of the sport. She looked poised to take the opening set when she led 5-2 but one set point slipped away and Kvitova surged back with a run of five games in a row. Konta was not disheartened, though, and held on to her lead in the second set to level the match. Fifth seed Kvitova had her thigh strapped and may have been hampered in the decider but that was to take

Mumbai, Jun 23 (IANS): Premier Futsal, the world’s f i r s t - eve r mu l t i - n a t i o n a l futsal league, announced on Thursday the signing of former Manchester United star Paul Scholes as a marquee player for three seasons. Scholes is one of those rare English footballers who played their entire professional careers at a single club. He is one of the most decorated footballers of England and is one of the most successful footballers in English club football. Scholes has won a total of 25 trophies, featuring 11 Premier League titles and two

some of the greatest football players. I have seen futsal grow not just back home, but also across the world and I have played in a few of those tournaments,” Scholes said in a release. “Premier Futsal will be a great way to introduce the sport to India and I’m looking forward to meeting the fans across India who I know are some of the most passionate in the world.” Scholes thus became the second of the eight marquee players who will be a part of Premier Futsal, a five-a-side variant of football. After roping in Alessandro Rosa Vieira, the sport’s most renowned player fondly known as Falcao, as it’s first big signing last month, the league signed former Portugal football star Deco and Scholes. Players will be allotted teams through a player draft which is slated to take place later this month. Premier Futsal, a game which is split into two halves of 20 minutes each, will be hosted by eight Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad and Goa from July 15-24 in a franchise based league in the inaugural season.

right-footed drive that whizzed past Isaksson with the aid of a deflection off substitute defender Erkan Zengin. Hazard was voted the Man of the Match. The Chelsea playmaker and Belgium skipper not only supplied the assist for Nainggolan’s fierce drive but also showed his dribbing and crossing ability, setting up five opportunities for team-mates. The statistics showed that the two teams shared 50-50 ball possession and 82 percent to 82 percent passing accuracy. Belgium were superior in total attempts which were 23-12 and “on target” was 8-4.

Paris, Jun 23 (IANS): Belgium beat Sweden 1-0 here on Wednesday with Radja Nainggolan’s late goal, advancing to the last 16 of Euro 2016 as the Group E runners-up. Sweden were sent packed, finishing at the bottom of the group with only one point (1-1 with Ireland, 0-1 to both Italy and Belgium). It was 34-year-old star Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s last game for Sweden as he had announced at the pre-match press conference that he would retire from inter national football. In a sense, Sweden

Ireland is headed to the European Championship round of 16 for the first time after beating Group E winner Italy 1-0 here on Wednesday to end the group stage as one of the best third-place teams. Italy, already headed for a knockout stage contest with two-time defending Euro champions Spain, decided to rest eight starters -- including goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon -for the match in Lille, offering a glimmer of hope to the underdog Irish side, EFE news agency reported. Robbie Brady’s strike in the 85th minute was the first goal to be conceded by the Azzurri at Euro 2016. The Irish played with their characteristic grit and determination in a foul-filled contest that more closely resembled a rugby match than a soccer game. Ireland dominated possession in the first half and Italy’s first chance didn’t come until the 54th minute, when Simone Zaza fired just over the crossbar. The Italians threatened again in the 78th minute, but Lorenzo Insigne hit the post. The Irish battled on and their work bore fruit when Brady headed in Wes Hoolahan’s cross. Ireland will play host country France in the round of 16.

Ireland beat Italy

Nice, Jun 23 (IANS): Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one of the world’s top strikers and all-time highest goal scorer for his country, bid farewell to international football after Sweden lost 1-0 to Belgium, finishing bottom of Group E at the Euro 2016 football tournament. The 34-year-old was the centre of attention during the match on Wednesday since he announced his intention to retire from international football after the tournament. If Sweden had managed to beat Belgium, Ibrahimovic would have continued to play in the knockout stage. “I’m just a boy from a small little part of Malmo and I got to represent my country. I was able to captain my country,” Ibrahimovic said after the game. “I’m proud of what I have achieved and I will have many beautiful memories of my Sweden career,” he added. As the all-time scorer of Sweden, Ibrahimovic has collected 62 goals in 116 appearances. He scored two goals at each of the previous three EUROs. His majic twist dink in the game against Italy in Euro 2004 impressed fans all over the world. With his playing style and acrobatic finishing compared to Dutch legend Marco van Basten, Ibrahimovic is widely regarded as one of the best footballers of his generation. His spectacular bicycle kick for Sweden against England won the 2013 FIFA Puskas Award for Goal of the Year. In December 2013, Ibrahimovic was ranked by the Guardian newspaper of England as the third-best player in the world, behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In December 2014, the Swedish newspaper Dagens
