Tendulkar opens up on Kumble- Shastri controversy

London, Jul 15 (PTI): Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday described the Indian cricket team’s newly-appointed head coach, Anil Kumble, as a “fabulous” player who will teach the players how to “win big moments”. Tendulkar, alongside another former captain Sourav Ganguly, was part of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that selected India’s highest wicket-taker and former Test captain for the coaching job. “Anil is a fabulous player, a hard competitor who will not make any compromises on the field. He will be out there to win each and every moment. Anil has a lot to share, everything that he has learnt from this

Sachin Tendulkar wonderful sport having played for almost 20 years,” Tendulkar said here Tuesday. “There are always big, crunch moments in any match and how to approach those moments is important. We

may plan a lot of things but eventually execution matters. “In sport, over a period of time what you learn is not every day you are successful, sometimes you have to face failures. “It is all about being a tough character and be able to stand back on your feet again and to compete the next day. Every day is a fresh day, new beginning. That is something I feel Anil will teach them (players),” he said. On a personal note, he described his experience playing alongside Kumble as “fantastic” and how the bowler had been a “big match winner”. “To the players, I would

Saina Nehwal

New Delhi, Jul 15 (IANS): India’s premier badminton star Saina Nehwal believes that her in-born go-getter attitude will help her overcome opponents, a couple of nagging injuries and pressure of expectations as she bids to better the colour of her Olympic medal at the Rio Games in August. The 26-year-old captured a bronze medal four years ago in London and finished runnerup at the World Championship last year. Her performance, marked by consistency, makes the World No.5 one of India’s most promising Olympic medal hopefuls. The former World No.1 has been bogged down by a couple of injuries at the start of the year and as the Olympic Games start on August 5, she is confident of not only reaching

the peak of fitness but also meeting the expectations of 1,250 million Indians. “I feel I am fit, with some nagging injuries. I am running nicely. At the end of the day, it’s important that you reach the peak and play your best during that particular week. That’s what will count ultimately and will be the key,” Saina told IANS in an email interview. “ M o r e o v e r, m e n t a l conditioning is as important as your physical strengthening. I have been blessed to be born with a go-getter attitude. I like to win and having a positive mind set really helps.” This will be Saina’s third Olympic Games. Over the years, she has learnt how to approach a key tournament. “Rio is an ideal place to showcase my game. You can’t

predict results, you need hard work and God’s blessing, apart from support of your family and fraternity,” Saina said. “I take each tournament as it comes. Rio Olympics will also be like any other games. My approach to the game is very positive and I would like to keep it like that and focus on my game. “Coming with an experience, I feel that on the day that I am 100 per cent fit, I have the potential to defeat anyone. I do not feel pressure too much. The moment you are on the court nothing else matters,” she added. The competition for the women’s singles may be the fiercest in recent editions. Apart from the established names of reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain, Shixian Wang, defending champion Li Xuerui, and Yihan Wang -- all Chinese - Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea and the quick emergence of youngsters like India’s very own double World Championship bronze medallist P.V. Sindhu, Japanese Nozomi Okuhara and Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, means that no one is guaranteed success. “I believe every player is there because they have the potential. Each game is going to be a tough game and each player will be a serious challenger,” she said. Keeping the challenge in mind, Saina is leaving no stone unturned to prepare for the battle. She revealed her daily schedule in Bengaluru under the watchful eyes of U. Vimal Kumar: “The entire day is spent in different sessions of training with sparring partners in three sessions of five hours in total -- two, two and one hour sessions,” she said. “Then there is full stretching with the physio, good nutritious meals and sound sleep. There is also a bit of entertainment on TV before I sleep,” she added.

say go out and grasp as much information from him as possible and enjoy cricket above all. “Let it be competitive, play it in the right spirit and enjoy the game,” he said. Pressed further on former Indian team director Ravi Shastri’s disappointment having lost the job of head coach to Kumble, Tendulkar simply said “whatever we discussed in that meeting room stays confidential information”. “Ravi’s contribution has been terrific and he’s done a fabulous job. He is someone that I have played cricket with and understood the way he approached cricket,” he added.

Payet committed to West Ham

Dimitri Payet L o nd o n , J u l 1 5 (Agencies): Dimitri Payet is flattered by transfer interest in him but says he has no intention of leaving West Ham this summer. Payet was one of the stars of Euro 2016, performing with great credit for losing finalists France and securing a place in UEFA’s team of the tournament after scoring three goals in seven games. His performances led to various links with top clubs across Europe, with the club’s co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan rating him in the £50m-£100m bracket earlier in the week. But the 29-year-old has given boss Slaven Bilic a huge boost by saying he is happy to be at the Premier League club and is not even thinking about a move away. “I’ve heard about all the interest and I’m flattered,” Payet told The Sun. “But I love West Ham. We had a fantastic season and I can’t wait to play in the Olympic Stadium. I’m 100 per cent staying at West Ham, I love the club. I can tell the Hammers fans that.” Payet joined West Ham last summer from Marseille and scored nine goals in his 30 Premier League appearances, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite in the final season at Upton Park. His comments echo those of Sullivan earlier this week he said: “He’s under contract. There might be six weeks of silliness when he bangs the table. But if you believe what he says, he wants to stay.”

Rio de janeiro, Jul 15 (IANS): Portugal have omitted from their Olympic football squad each of the six prelisted players who took part in the national team’s European Championship triumph. The players left out were Renato Sanchez, Raphael Guerreiro, Andre Gomes, Joao Mario, William Carvalho and Rafa Silva, reports Xinhua. The squad was named on Thursday, just four days after Portugal defeated hosts France on penalties to clinch their first ever major title. Rui Jorge’s 17man list includes seven players who took part in Portugal’s Euro under-21 campaign last year, in which they finished runners up. Among them are Manchester United’s Bruno Varela and LIverpool’s Tiago Ilori. The three over-23 players are Porto’s Sergio Oliveira, CD Nacional’s Salvador Agra and Sporting Lisbon’s Andre Martins. Portugal will play their first match of the Rio Games against Argentina at Rio’s Engenhao stadium on August 4. Portugal squad: Goalkeepers: Bruno Varela, Joel Pereira. Defenders: Edgar Ie, Ricardo Esgaio, Tiago Ilori, Tobias Figueiredo. New Delhi, Jul 15 (Agencies): Three Rio bound Indian boxers; Shiva Thapa (56kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Vikas Krishan (75kg), have been allowed to fight under the national flag at the Olympic Games beginning August 5 in Brazil. The boxing world governing body (AIBA) has allowed the Indian team to host the tri-colour. Due to infighting between Indian officials the AIBA had suspended the national federation in 2012. “That worry is over as the world body has agreed to give some concession to the Indian team,” said an official associated with the ad-hoc boxing panel. For the past four years, national competitions were not due to the absence of a national federation. In the
