Roma down Reds in pre-season

Salah keeps hold of the ball under pressure from Liverpool’s James Milner and new signing Sadio Man.

Roma regained their lead just after the hour mark through former Chelsea man Salah, who poked the ball over the line after Dzeko’s header was saved by Simon Mignolet. Liverpool are up against Barcelona next at Wembley on Saturday before concluding their pre-season with a clash against Mainz on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp’s side had

conceded just once in their six pre-season outings before the clash at the Busch Stadium, and put out a strong side in St Louis including Gini Wijnaldum, Sadio Mane, Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino. It was a busy first half as veteran goalkeeper Alex Manninger was kept on his toes, tipping away Stephan El Shaarawy’s effort from 20

AIFF U-16 Youth League to have 50 teams

RWF files suit against suspension

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS): The second edition of the U-16 Youth League, scheduled to kick-off in September, will feature 50 teams, an increase by 11 from the inaugural edition. The increase is indicative of the growing interest amongst the football clubs and academies in the country. The teams are drawn all across India, giving the league a balanced representation, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Tuesday. “Last season 39 teams competed in the Youth League but the number has jumped to 50 this season, which is more than overwhelming. It reflects the increasing level of the interest among the kids. That’s the aspect which we are looking for,” I-League CEO Sunando Dhar said in a statement. The league was conceptualized as the U-15 Youth League. But it has been renamed the U-16 Youth League keeping

in mind the forthcoming U-17 World Cup India in 2017. AIFF Technical Director Scott O’Donell said the “magic mark” of 50 showed the “positive intent”. “Reaching the magic figure of 50 in the second year of the U-16 Youth League shows the positive intent among the clubs and private academies. They deserve due credit for their untiring effort towards building up the teams,” he said. “Playing competitive football is a big part of a young player’s development. The U-16 Youth League will give the players (and coaches) the opportunity to test themselves against teams from other States. “The first edition of the U-15 Youth League was a huge success and it is great to see even more teams expressing their interest.” In the inaugural edition, Minerva Academy FC defeated Royal Wahingdoh FC in the final in Goa.

Moscow, Aug 2 (IANS): The Russian Weightlifting Federation (RWF) has filed a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to suspend all Russian lifters from the 2016 Olympics. “This is true, we have filed a lawsuit with CAS and are waiting for their response and will see whether we will receive it on Tuesday or not,” Tass quoted RWF President Sergei Syrtsov as saying on Monday. The IWF announced last Friday its decision to ban the entire Russian weightlifting team from the 2016 Games, which will kick-off this week in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, due to confirmed Adverse Analytical Findings (AAF) in reanalysed doping samples of seven Russian athletes from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

yards before Dzeko poked the ball over from close range. Dzeko again went close early on with a left-footed curling shot from inside the area having turned Dejan Lovren, while at the other end Sturridge was denied by Alisson having got one-on-one with the Brazilian goalkeeper. Bosnian striker Dzeko got his goal on 29 minutes, taking the ball on his chest and shooting early past Manninger from 20 yards into the bottom right corner with his left foot. Liver pool equalised just before the break through Ojo, who got on the end of Lovren’s header across goal following James Milner’s deep corner. There was far less action in the second half, and Roma regained the lead on 62 minutes through Salah. Despite saving well from Dzeko’s point-blank header, substitute goalkeeper Mignolet got in a slight mix-up with defender Andre Wisdom as he was left off-balance, allowing the Egyptian to force the ball home from close range. Mignolet did save well from Federico Ricci late one down to his left, before Alisson produced a fine stop to deny Danny Ings’ close-range header from a Cameron Brannagan free-kick.

Man City sign Sane for £37m London, Aug 2 (Agencies): Manchester City have completed the signing of Germany winger Leroy Sane from Schalke for £37m. Sane has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, further bolstering Pep Guardiola’s attacking options ahead of the new season following the acquisition of Nolito for £13.8m from Celta Vigo earlier this summer. The 20-yearold was left out of Schalke’s squad travelling to Austria for their pre-season training camp having informed Schalke last week he wanted to leave to push through a move to City. Sane, who will wear the No 9 shirt, told the club’s website: “I feel really good, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City. “One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career.” “I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players. I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

Cibulkova forced to pull out of the Olympics Rio de Janeiro, Aug 2 (Agencies): Dominika Cibulkova has been forced to pull out of the Rio Olympics with a left calf injury just four days before the Games get underway. The Slovakian world No 11 has been told to rest for between seven and 10 days after picking up the knock in the Rogers Cup in Montreal last week where she lost in the second round to Eugenie Bouchard. Cibulkova, 27, is the latest high-profile player to withdraw from the Games which get underway on Friday, with Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, who is pregnant, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova also all missing. Maria Sharapova, who won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, is also missing as she serves a two-year doping ban. The Slovakian’s spot in the draw will be taken by world No 94 Anett Kontaveit. Elsewhere, Australian sisters Arina and Anastasia Rodionova have been handed a late Olympic call-up for the women’s doubles on Monday. Anastasia, 34, will be competing at her second Games while Arina, 26, will

New coach Bauza plans to woo Messi back for Argentina Buenos Aires, Aug 2 (Agencies): Argentina’s new coach Edgardo Bauza has set his mind to wooing Lionel Messi back from international retirement as he ponders his squad for next month’s South American 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Bauza was named on Monday to replace Gerardo Martino, who resigned a month ago after steering Messi’s side to two successive Copa America finals which ended in penalty shootout defeats to Chile. The more recent of those results in the Copa America Centenario in the United States in June led to Messi deciding to quit the team. It was his fourth defeat in a major final with Argentina. “I’m optimistic about Messi,” Bauza said. “I hope

the chat with him will help for him to carry on in the national team. “I want to explain to Messi what my (tactical) idea is. The least of my worries is his position on the pitch,” Bauza was quoted as saying in the Argentine daily La Nacion on Tuesday. “There’s no need to convince Messi of anything, the plan is to talk about football,” said Bauza, speaking in Brazil where he has coached Sao Paulo for eight months. Bauza, who quit his job with Sao Paulo to accept the Argentina vacancy and will sign his contract in Buenos Aires on Friday, has only a couple of weeks to decide on his squad for qualifiers at home to Uruguay and away to

Venezuela in the first week of September. “There isn’t much time. My first squad won’t have many changes but I want to talk with five or six of the leading players,” Bauza said, no doubt referring to the likes of Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain. He also opened the door for Carlos Tevez, overlooked by Martino since a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Asuncion last October where he won his 76th cap. “I’m thinking of Tevez as I am about other players ... Tevez is a player good enough for the national team,” Bauza said. Bauza, a former central defender, rejected a tag as a

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 2 (IANS): The Brazilian capital will increase the number of military police officers on patrol by 33 percent during the 2016 Olympic Games. The increase means 13,900 officers will be safeguarding city streets, rather than 10,400, Col. Claudio Lima Freire, chief of staff of the Brazilian military, told the media on Monday at the Comprehensive Control Center (CiCC) set up for the Games, reports Xinhua news agency. Some of the additional officers come from the administrative side of the force, he said, meaning they normally have desk jobs. Some 1,300 officers will be stationed at Olympic venues where competitions are being held. The remainder will spread out throughout the city, joining police stations at Rio favelas, or slums, and check points for cars, buses and motorcycles. “We will have greater control in the area of Barra da Tijuca,” said Lima, due to the concentration of Olympic venues in the district. “Some 10,000 military police officers have received special training in containing terrorist threats inside and outside Olympic facilities,” he added. To bolster security, officials said they will use airborne cameras that will transmit images in real time to the CiCC. The increase in officers brings the overall security force to be deployed at the Games to nearly 55,000, including 22,000 military troops.

defensive coach, saying: “I’m one of those who think that all (the team) have to defend. Football today is like that. “You can defend in your opponents’ half if the pressure is high (up the field) but it’s easier when you have players of the quality of the Argentina team. The options they offer you are many.” Argentina are third in the 10-nation South American World Cup qualifying group with 11 points from six matches, two points behind leading pair Uruguay and Ecuador. The top four teams after 18 matches go through to the Russia finals while the fifthplaced team goes into an intercontinental playoff for one more berth.

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS): The national capital is all set to host five-time champions Spain on the hard courts of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff tie, to be played on September 16-18. All India Tennis Association (AITA) General Secretary Bharat Oza said keeping in mind the ongoing monsoon and the time constraint involved in preparing an alternative grass court venue, they decided to host the tournament at the DLTA. “In addition to requirement of world group ties being quite demanding, like creation of 4,000 seat stands etc and the time available for preparation being short, it was ultimately decided to have the matches at a venue well equipped for such tie,” Ozha said in a statement.
