Officer and Board Updates

NACAT President

By the time this comes to print, school will be back in session and (maybe) the heat of summer will be starting to ease. For those who attended Greenville this past July, we had a cooler than normal week for the conference - that’s not a complaint by the way, just an observation. While the weather was pleasant, the conference itself was great. Randy McClain and the staff of Greenville Technical College hosted a wonderful conference. Many thanks and much appreciation to GTC for hosting! For those who attended, we need your input to help NACAT continue to provide great conferences. If you haven’t already done so, please visit the nacatconference.org site and click on the link to complete a 2014 conference evaluation. The evaluation links are on the home page in the Conference Updates box and under the Program link. The board and officers review these evaluations and use the information to make each conference the best that we can. Also, while you’re on the conference site, click over to nacat.org and make sure your profile is up to date, especially your email address. It may be necessary to get information out to the members between newsletters and email is usually the best method. Please make sure we have a valid email address and one that is whitelisted to get past spam filters. Click on the Edit My Profile link at the top of NACAT home page. In case you weren’t able to attend the conference, I am pleased to announce the Bill Haas has taken the position of NACAT business manager. Bill has replaced Dan Perrin, who retired at the end of August. Dan will remain the 2015 conference vice-president and will continue to work with NACAT in the future. For those of you who don’t know Bill, he has over 40 years of experience in the automotive industry including 12 years as the Vice-President of Education and Training for ASA. Bill brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to NACAT and we look forward to being able to utilize Bill to the benefit of NACAT and its members. Also at the conference, the members elected a new NACAT Secretary, Jim Voth from Red River College. As many of you know, this isn’t the first time Jim has served the NACAT leadership. For being willing to step up and take on another role to help NACAT, thanks and congratulations Jim! Also in election news, re-elected to the board were Martin Duvic from Baton Rouge Community College and Steve Gibson from K&N Engineering. Newly elected to the board was Alan Grant, a retired member from California. At the Friday board meeting, Julia Johnson from Skyline College was elected board chairperson for 2014-2015. Congratulations to Martin, Steve, Alan, and Julia. Next year at Joliet, three board positions, Treasurer, and NACAT Vice President/President Elect will be up for election. If you would like to help with the running of NACAT, start thinking about running for one of these spots. Again, thanks to the GTC staff and to all who attended the 2014 conference. Keep an eye on the website for updates on 2015 in Joliet.

Officer and Board Update

Chairman of the Board Hello members! I am very excited to have been named the Chair of NACAT’s Board of Directors and am very much looking forward to the coming year. The Board has been diligently pursuing some new ideas and fresh approaches and I look forward to sharing our progress with you throughout the year. I’d like to give you a little background about myself. I never so much as touched a tool (or a car) until I was almost 40 years old. I have been interested in cars since I was a little girl, but didn’t feel like there was a place for me in the industry or even as a hobby. My attempts to learn from family and friends were less than successful and I put my interest aside for many years. I pursued a degree in International Relations and worked in a variety of industries before having children and becoming a stay-at-home-mommy. Staying at home and raising children may seem glamorous, but my desire to wear sweatpants every day and speak only in one syllable words waned after about a decade. About the time my youngest became old enough for preschool, I was introduced to Skyline College in San Bruno, CA. I had received a class schedule in the mail and when I dropped it on the table, it fell open to the Automotive pages. I decided to enroll in one of their “consumer” classes to see if automotive technology was something I could even grasp. Not only could I grasp the concepts but I discovered that, for the first time ever, I was passionate about something. Two consumer classes later, I applied for the full-time program. I’d love to say I was a natural and excelled with ease. However, that was not the case. I was short on math and science skills and struggled with most of the concepts most of the time. Fortunately, the instructors were more than willing to go way out of their way to help their students succeed. I started working in repair shops during my second year of the program and began teaching classes for women about the same time. Rick Escalambre, my Advanced Engines instructor (and department coordinator) thought I might make a good teacher and he gave me a part-time position shortly after I graduated. What an amazing opportunity! I am so fortunate to be able to have a job I love and look forward to every day. Not only do I get to play with cars, but I have the opportunity to inspire young people and help them on their way to careers they love. Becoming the Chair of the NACAT Board is another amazing opportunity and I look forward to the coming year. The Board has been working to update and streamline the organization and we are working on ways to improve the conferences, member services and strengthen industry alliances. The Board determined last year that two meetings a year would not bring us closer to our goals any time soon, so we began meeting monthly via web conferencing. We have identified areas for improvement and formed committees to address the organization’s needs. We are currently creating a new business plan, developing a marketing strategy and refining the day to day operations. Our goal is to modernize and streamline our organization to better serve our members and partners so that we may continue to offer high-quality training for automotive teachers. Please look for updates on our progress and if you would like to volunteer, offer assistance or join the Board, please contact us. We would love to have your input.

Did you know? Julia was the winner of the 2010 Delmar-Cengage Learning Jack Erjavec Scholarship. The NACAT Education Foundation award helped Julia attend the 2010 Conference and reach some of her goals. Now she is devoting time to help NACAT. It is proof that your donations to the Foundation can help create positive change.

Charles Ginther Named 2014 NACAT MVP Charles Ginther, NACAT Treasurer and faculty at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina, was named NACAT MVP by President Rob Thompson at the 2014 NACAT Conference in Greenville, South Carolina. Regarding the naming of Mr. Ginther as MVP, President Thompson states: Being the President of NACAT comes with many responsibilities and enjoyable opportunities. One of the most enjoyable parts has been to name the NACAT MVP. The MVP award is given to recognize someone who goes above and beyond for the organization and the membership. Chuck Ginther is the recipient of the 2014 MVP award because of his commitment and dedication to NACAT and to automotive education. Chuck is currently the NACAT Treasurer and has been for many years. Over time, Chuck has had to take on additional responsibilities, such as taking over as treasurer of the NACAT Education Foundation, and has been instrumental in keeping NACAT in the “black.” As our treasurer, Chuck is always watchful and critical of our financial situation and constantly looking for ways to save the organization money and ensures the money we do spend is well spent. In addition, Chuck was the driving force behind the NACAT South Carolina chapter and was responsible for the distribution of a significant amount of donated items to NACAT schools. Taking on these two projects required a significant amount of time, dedication, and energy themselves, over and above Chuck’s other commitments.

It was a great pleasure to surprise Chuck with the MVP award at the banquet. For those of you who know Chuck, it is no surprise that he deserves recognition. If you can, be sure to tell Chuck congratulations when you see him next July in Joliet.

Dan and Lynda Perrin Presented NACAT Special Service Award! The NACAT Board and President Rob Thompson conferred a NACAT Special Service Award upon Dan and Lynda Perrin during the 2014 NACAT Conference in Greenville, South Carolina. The award recognized the many years and long hours the couple have given to NACAT. Not normally one to be speechless, Dan was caught off-guard by the award, and the recognition given in Board member testimonials was seen to have touched the Perrins. When asked if he would be willing to write a few words about the honor, Dan did not hesitate. He states: It has been a great honor to serve as NACAT’s Executive Manager since 2005. Lynda and I were also honored so generously by the recognition plaque we received at the NACAT Awards Banquet. The plaque will be proudly displayed in our home office. The watch I was presented will be worn as a reminder of the great times we both enjoyed since our first introduction to NACAT in 1983. We were also touched by the gracious comments of some of the current leadership. They only made a special memory even that much more rewarding. NACAT has been faithfully served by many excellent leaders, and I take pride in being one of them. NACAT has been blessed by dedicated members and loyal industry supporters for all of its 41 years. No other organization I am aware of is more member focused and dedicated to meeting their needs as your NACAT is. My wife Lynda has been an integral part of my participation in and service to NACAT. It was also special to have her included in the recognition. In her official position as NACAT Historian she lovingly preserved and presented NACAT’s heritage. She spent many hours sifting through years of documents, photos and other treasures that we received from our members. I know that she enjoyed sharing our history with members old and new. I also know that she appreciated the trust and opportunity to serve in such an important position. We are leaving our duties with NACAT, but not our participation as members. It is comforting to know that NACAT is in good hands. I have known Bill Haas for some time and assure you he is a very capable Manager and long time supporter of NACAT. We will be looking forward to the next and future NACAT Conferences. I hope to see you there!

NEW Section Added to NACAT Website: NACATvision! Have you seen the new section on the NACAT website at http://www.nacat.org? The new section is called NACATvision and is available after a member logs into the site. This area is designed to hold videos of interest from NACAT and its industry friends. Currently, you will find three videos being shared by Magnaflow in the newly developing NACATvision. Upon submission, Magnaflow stated “Magnaflow Exhaust Products introduces a Three Part Video Series entitled Catalytic Converter 101. This series moves from basic converter construction in Part 1 to diagnosis of catalyst failures in part 2 and completing the process with proper repair techniques in the final video. It is our hope that this instructional video series will be a welcomed edition to your curriculum.” The process for getting your videos into NACATvision is easy. If you represent an entity who would like to be involved, all you need to do is the following: •

Contact the NACAT Webmaster at webmaster@nacat.org

Share your video with NACAT through a file sharing service such as dropbox or google docs

Authorize NACAT to share your video

It is the ongoing goal of NACAT to develop and maintain a strong professional organization that will serve the needs of automotive educators in public and private enterprise throughout North America.” Over the years NACAT and the NACAT Education Foundation have worked diligently to guarantee that this mission is upheld to ensure professional and personal development and growth. Without you, our membership and our industry partners, this would not be possible. We would like to share with you one example of how our industry partners help us to better serve our members. This will be a continuing theme in future issues of NACAT News with a different partner being recognized in each of the upcoming issues. We do not do this to single out any one partner above or beyond another – we do this to have an additional way to thank our many generous industry supporters. This issue we would like to send a giant THANK YOU to Veejer Enterprises. It is not uncommon for the company to show its support anywhere NACAT is found. They support this newsletter with 1 1/2 pages of advertisements each issue. One such ad is located on the opposite page and their 1/2 page ad is located on page 17 of this issue. Further, their presence at the conference, both via the trade show and the number of seminars presented, illustrate that Vince Fischelli and Veejer are ardent NACAT supporters. We encourage you to join us at the 2015 NACAT Conference at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois. While there you will be able to earn your 20 hours of professional development and be able to connect with NACAT’s industry friends.
