Hello from the NAAUC team!

It has been an extremely busy start to the year, both for colleges and NAAUC alike. We understand that the start of the year has been difficult for many residences given the current climate but, regardless of this, we would like to extend our congratulations to all residences on the support they have given students. We have received outstanding feedback from many students regarding how accommodating and supportive residences have been. It is always exciting to hear about the positive changes and new programs being implemented that seek to better support those moving into residential communities.

Here are some of the latest updates from us!

01 Adelaide National Conference The 52nd Annual NAAUC conference will be held between the 29th of November and the 5th of December at Lincoln and St Anne’s, the University of Adelaide. This provides a surreal opportunity for NAAUC to bring together and educate the new student leaders from across the nation, whilst also showcasing the beautiful sandstone colleges and sights of Adelaide for the first time in 32 years. This will be our second summer conference and we are eager to make it even more successful than the previous summer conference held at International House, the University of Melbourne.

02 We are no longer changing our name

With the desire to represent and engage all students living on campus, the NAAUC Executive had been considering undertaking a name change, with the proposed name being the National Association of Australian University Residential Communities (NAAURC). This name change aimed to be a symbolic gesture to engage with the new student accommodation providers that are progressively becoming more established.

After extensive discussion, the Executive identified the core values that we support: intentional community, character formation, independent student leadership, and pastoral care. We believe the current name, the National Association of Australian University Colleges, rather than being a descriptor of a distinct type of community, actually denotes these collegiate values we have identified.

It is for this reason, NAAUC will no longer be undertaking a name change. Our mandate, however, remains the same. We will continue to connect, educate, support and advocate for all students around Australia, with a vision to create ever improving communities organised by outstanding young leaders.

03 NAAUC and COVID-19 The current global situation has had notable impacts on residences around Australia, with the implementation of strict limitations on university studies, residential events and personal interactions. NAAUC has been endeavouring to provide residences with resources, ideas and networking platforms to connect residential leaders with solutions and support. We will be closely monitoring the effects of this crisis on the residential sphere and have begun planning for the rehabilitation phase of this situation. If you are requiring support or would like to share what is happening at your residence, please do not hesitate to contact us.

04 Networking Events Part of the recovery effort post-COVID-19 will include the introduction of state specific networking events. These events will be organised by our state representatives with the aim of bringing together student leaders and HRC from local areas, educating and engaging them on topical issues related to their residential communities. This will be particularly important after the eventful start to the year that we have had. State representatives will convey further information but for now stay tuned!

2020 President | Adrian Oats Adrian Oats has graduated with a BcS (Psychology) and is now in his last year of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne. He is a staff member at St Hilda’s College, acting as both a Senior Residential Advisor and Residential Psychology Tutor. Within these rolls, Adrian works with a team of 10 Residential Advisors, developing their portfolios and providing both academic and pastoral support to the community. Prior to being the President of NAAUC, Adrian was previously the Victorian State Representative for NAAUC, and Student Club President of St Hilda’s College.
