Dear Heads, Deans, and Residential Coordinators, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 Pre-Conference information kit. This year marks the 52nd annual National Conference whereby NAAUC continues to enable the development and connection of residential student leaders across the country. The NAAUC Conference provides us with the opportunity to gather students together to share their experiences, network and collaborate. We believe that through educating student leaders and providing a platform for rigorous discussion, brainstorming and seeing ideas in action, students can rapidly grow and develop as residential leaders. It is a privilege for us to provide this to students, especially in 2021. The unique HRC Conference will enable organised and incomparable dialogue between students and staff leaders to occur. Through engagement with a multitude of seminars, speaking with student leaders, and listening to guest speakers, it is our hope that new insights and creative ideas will come to fruition for both you, your student leaders, and your residence. I encourage that any and all ideas that circulate the National Conference be challenged by your expertise. In doing so, distinct, and meritorious ideas will be generated, and all individuals will benefit. NAAUC’s National Conference is an experience like no other, and there has never been a more important time for residences to band together to share their experience, knowledge, and support than during the COVID-19 recovery. This is a great privilege that is provided to NAAUC; the opportunity to speak with, support and watch student leaders flourish. WELCOME HRC! This is your very first sneak peak of what’s to come for our 52nd National Conference, we hope it provides you with insight into what to expect from our conference in Adelaide! Our goal for this year is to prepare your future leaders for the year ahead in 2022. We recognise that the students who fill your residence’s leadership roles have a strong impact, not only in their tenures, but in the years that follow. For this reason, we’ve been diligently preparing our academic seminars and social events so that they have a lasting positive impact on this year's conference delegates. It is our hope to create an environment that nurtures inventive thinking and unique approaches to current social-climate topics that have an impact on your residence. We strongly encourage all members of HRC and conference delegates, to welcome meaningful conversations that have the potential to challenge their ways of thinking. For long-lasting and meaningful solutions to be achieved, constructive and critical conversations must first occur. NAAUC is the place for this, and with your help, we can make your residence the place for this too. The fantastic group of people who make up our incredible Working Party have been hard at work, planning all of the exciting moments we know which will make up our 2021 National Conference. In 2021, the NAAUC conference will be jointly hosted by two of South Australia’s residences, Lincoln College and St Ann’s College. Lincoln was founded in 1952. Originally an all-male college, it began as 23 residents living in a single historic house. Over the past 70 years, Lincoln has grown to become a home for over 200 residents. Lincoln prides itself on its focus on multiculturalism, diversity, and the nurturing of a safe and inclusive environment where all residents can express themselves in their own individual way.
Beginning in 1947, St Ann’s housed all female students and was the first college in Adelaide to open up to co-ed admissions in 1973. The college houses up to 185 students at a time, with a focus on rural and international students. The environment at St Ann’s has been created to support the key skill development of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Lincoln and Ann’s pride themselves on holding close relationships, both through students and staff. Lincoln and St Ann’s both neighbour the beautiful Brougham Park in the suburb of North Adelaide. Situated just a short walk from Adelaide University and the Adelaide CBD both are ideal locations for living and for the 2021 NAAUC National Conference!
ARRIVAL + DEPARTURE The NAAUC HRC Conference will run from the 28th of November to the 1st of December 2021. The conference will conclude on Wednesday at lunchtime. CHECK IN: Between 9am – 1:30pm (November 28th) CHECK OUT: 10am (December 1st) A luggage room will be provided
Delegates should arrange to fly into Adelaide Airport on the 28th of November. Check in will be open at our host residences from 9:00am until 1:30pm. We advise that you leave time for a 20-30 minute trip by uber or taxi from the airport, so plan to land in Adelaide before 1pm. If you’re planning to catch public transport make sure to leave a bit more time - around an hour is recommended.
Our host residences have set a strict check out time of 10am on December 1st for the HRC conference programme. Note: Travel costs to and from the conference are not included in the conference ticket prices and delegates are required to arrange their own travel.
ACADEMICS The HRC programme is unique in its integration of the academic programme for both the delegate National Conference and the HRC Conference. The HRC conference held across four days provides a critical look at the residential living sector with particular consideration of the pertinent issues facing the industry. The programme consists of tailored HRC sessions that look at the future of the residential living sector as well as a series of integrated sessions that allow residential staff an opportunity to listen and participate in the seminars that delegates are attending, enabling dialogue to occur between students and HRC.
SOCIAL
The HRC social programme provides an opportunity for members to expand their network and engage in critical discussion with leaders across the industry. Each evening attendees will have the opportunity to engage in an exciting social programme filled with wonderful dining experiences, guest speakers and critical discussion.
ADVICE SUPPORT CONSULTING + REFFERAL We have team members, alumni and partners with an extensive understanding of residential communities that comes with a national network. Our people have experienced the challenges and difficulties that residential communities face, and we encourage members to take full advantage of this when contacting us for advice. We are also available to consult and develop plans and strategies with you and your team on ideas you want to implement. NAAUC can also assist you in resolving conflict by acting as an independent external mediator. As an objective liaison between residential professionals and student leaders, NAAUC can help to bridge the gap in the event of a conflict and help both parties develop a mutually beneficial solution. Further, for any issues beyond our advice, we can put you in contact with professionals, many of whom are NAAUC alumni, who may be able to provide assistance with the initial steps, free of charge when you have a membership.

SOCIAL MEDIA As our membership base is made up of students, NAAUC utilises social media as a means of communicating. Our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn pages feature constant student engagement and discussion on current issues facing residences around Australia. Many use our pages as a forum to ask questions, share ideas and discover information from us and residences in certain areas. Important information and NAAUC documents are also sent to our members via email, and interested parties can receive further updates by following our LinkedIn profile.
State Summits + Networking Events Members will get special access to a sample of our content in your State or Territory through our NAAUC State Summits. Our Networking Events also provide an opportunity for our members to connect with other residences and professionals, and share experiences.
NAAUC prides itself on promoting diversity in conversation and ensuring equal opportunity for all. To facilitate this, this year we are offering several fully funded scholarships to enable high quality candidates who are interested in student leadership and furthering their residential communities to attend our National Conference. Our scholarships are also designed to maximise personal and professional gain from attending the conference.
Each scholarship covers the full cost of a conference ticket; however, does NOT include transport costs unless stated otherwise in the scholarship description.
All scholarships require a written statement outlining your suitability for the scholarship and what you hope to achieve by attending the NAAUC 2021 National Conference. The Community Member scholarship is awarded to an applicant who will not have a formal leadership position within their residence in 2021 but who actively engages with their residential community and strives to better the experiences of those around them.
This scholarship is for those who, due to location (remote/ rural/ regional), disability or financial circumstances, are hindered in their access to the National Conference. We need these diverse opinions in our change-making conversations and this scholarship aims to promote that. This scholarship will also cover the cost of travel to and from the conference.
NAAUC believes that we hold a significant responsibility to make university campuses and residences more welcoming to First Nations students and their cultural histories. This scholarship aims to assist in facilitating a First Nations student in attending our National Conference to share their experiences
The Merit Scholarship is for a student who is keen to undertake a formal project looking into an area of research which they believe is
