COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS The NAAUC team has thought long and hard about the viability of hosting our annual National Conference in person this year. We have consulted with a variety of stakeholders and experts on this matter. At this point in time we believe that there is extreme value in hosting an in person conference, as planned, in December of this year. Obviously, this decision has not been made lightly and the team will continue to monitor government guidelines to ensure that we are complying with required safety measures. Should the conference be unable to be held in person, we are also planning for measures to host the academic portion of our conference online. Any tickets purchased for an in person conference will be able to be fully refunded or converted to digital tickets as the need arises. Please see our ticketing page for further information. We will endeavour to keep residential communities informed of our decision-making in a timely manner. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dear Delegates, As you are reading this, the NAAUC team is working tirelessly to plan the 52nd National Conference hosted by Lincoln and St Ann’s colleges at the University of Adelaide. It has been 32 years since the National Conference was hosted in Adelaide, providing us with a unique opportunity to display all that this beautiful region has to offer. As the peak representative body for students living on campus, NAAUC has continued to grow since its establishment in 1968. From a small gathering of student presidents from around the country, NAAUC now has a membership base consisting of over 100,000 students living on campus. Our network enables us to engage in discussion about improving the residential experience of students. This is done through the development of ideas and strategies that assist in implementing effective change within residences, all of which culminates at our National Conference. The first six months of this year have been a challenge to our communities. One that we have all risen to. Residences have responded differently to COVID-19, but all communities have been impacted, especially the student bodies. The National Conference provides significant opportunities for residents to overcome the impact COVID-19 has had on their usual development and progression as student leaders.
Over one week, you will engage with a wide variety of events, ranging from unparalleled academic and social programs to professional networking and partnership. This will provide you with a sustained connection to student leaders around Australia which you can utilise to assist you with the implementation of ideas within your residence. This program is specifically aimed to address the reduced hands on leadership and pastoral care experience and adjusted social and academic events that has arisen in these circumstances. In one week, you will be given the tools and network required to confidently step forward into your role in 2021. This is a unique opportunity for you to gain personal and professional development from a group of student leaders from across the nation, all of whom have a plethora of knowledge and experience related to the residential sphere. The whole team is incredibly appreciative of your eagerness to be involved within NAAUC, and more specifically, our National Conference. Now, more than ever, it is vital to connect student leaders across the nation. Your ongoing investment with this program and your own residential community will ensure the development of residential living in the years to come. CONFERENCE DIRECTORS’ WELCOME On Behalf of St Ann’s College, Lincoln College, The University of Adelaide and the entire NAAUC team, we would love to welcome you to NAAUC’s 52nd National Conference! For most of you conference is going to be a completely new experience, and although it might seem daunting at first, in no time at all you’ll be a part of the community. Just remember, everyone is in the same boat as you, including us! The first half of 2020 has been overwhelming to say the least and everyone has had their lives turned upside down. While things are starting to get back to normal here in South Australia, we are taking every precaution in ensuring our National Conference will be in line with South Australian and federal government regulations. Everyone’s health and safety is our first priority. More details on how we will be doing this will be announced throughout the year, but if you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us here at NAAUC. We are so excited for a unique conference experience with the same fundamentals that students have come to love over NAAUC’s history. Over six days you’ll hear from some of the foremost experts on a range of topics relating to university students and university residences, learn some invaluable skills and lessons that will stay with you for the rest of your life and, of course, have fun! NAAUC Conference is an experience like no other, and there’s never been a more important time for residences to band together to share their experience, knowledge, and support than during the COVID-19 recovery. This is the perfect opportunity for you to prepare for your future as a student leader in 2021. HOST UNIVERSITY We are very excited to be welcoming you all to Adelaide for the first time in over 25 years! Adelaide is a unique and vibrant city, with more to offer than meets the eye. No doubt once you reach the end of this week you will see how much opportunity South Australia has in store, much like your time living on campus. The University of Adelaide is situated on the banks of the Torrens River and in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD. Throughout the conference, we will have the opportunity to utilise a range of historic buildings and contemporary learning spaces. The University of Adelaide aims to pursue meaningful change and celebrate its proud history, including becoming the first Australian University to admit female undergraduates in 1881. The University applies proven values in the pursuit of contemporary educational and research excellence, meeting local and global communities’ evolving needs and challenges; and striving to prepare graduates for their aspirations and the needs of the future workforce.
HOST RESIDENCE In 2020, the NAAUC conference will be jointly hosted by two of South Australia’s residences, Lincoln College and St Ann’s College. Lincoln was founded in 1952. Originally an all-male college, it began as 23 residents living in a single historic house. Over the past 70 years, Lincoln has grown to become a home for over 200 residents. Lincoln prides itself on its focus on multiculturalism, diversity, and the nurturing of a safe and inclusive environment where all residents can express themselves in their own individual way. Beginning in 1947, St Ann’s housed all female students and was the first college in Adelaide to open up to co-ed admissions in 1973. The college houses up to 185 students at a time, with a focus on rural and international students. The environment at St Ann’s has been created to support the key skill development of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Lincoln and Ann’s pride themselves on holding close relationships, both through students and staff. Lincoln and St Ann’s both neighbour the beautiful Brougham Park in the suburb of North Adelaide. Situated just a short walk from Adelaide University and the Adelaide CBD both are ideal locations for living and for the 2020 NAAUC National Conference!
CONFERENCE EXPERIENCES ACADEMIC PROGRAM Living on campus is an invaluable part of the tertiary learning experience, fostering curiosity, creativity and community for students. The 2020 NAAUC academic program will take student leaders back to basics and explore the initial purpose of living at a residence and the importance of nurturing an inclusive environment within their community. Delegates will focus on vulnerability in leadership and how to recognise and understand their capabilities as leaders. Academic sessions will be held across four days, beginning with exploration of the delegate as an individual and their respective leadership skills, before moving on to wellbeing, diversity and culture. To conclude, delegates will partake in ‘The Pitch’ where they have the opportunity to develop an idea for an event, practice or change they wish to make in their residence and present it to a panel of NAAUC team members. The 2020 program will include a range of seminars, guest speakers, workshops and panels, aiming to inspire delegates to make a positive contribution to their residence and equip them with the tangible skills and support to do so. Upon leaving the conference, delegates will have the skills to bridge the gap in knowledge and experience after the diverse effects of the COVID19 pandemic.
SOCIAL PROGRAM It’s called physical distancing, not social distancing. Every day will feature a unique social event designed to get delegates out of their comfort zone, meeting new people, and having fun being vulnerable. The week starts off with a special address from a soon to be announced distinguished guest at our Opening Dinner, where you’ll have the first opportunity to meet your fellow delegates. Each day will feature a different activity put together by our amazing Working Party designed to show you the best features of Adelaide and South Australia. You’ll experience well known events like Merch Swap and Ball, as well as some exciting new ideas we can’t wait to show you. We love the element of surprise so we won’t get into details, but we’ll give you some hints: pyjamas, wine (only if you’re into that), puzzles, fancy dress, and a chance to finally get back into travelling.
CONFERENCE LOGISTICS TRAVEL, ARRIVAL + DEPARTURE Delegates should arrange to fly into Adelaide Airport on the 29th of November. Check in will be open at our host residences from 9:00am until 1:30pm. We advise you leave time for a 20-30 minute trip by uber or taxi from the airport, so plan to land in Adelaide before 1pm. If you’re planning to catch public transport make sure to leave a bit more time - around an hour is recommended. Our host residences have set a strict check out time of 10am on 5th December and, with the exception of breakfast, there are no planned activities on the 5th. Travel costs to and from the conference are not included in the conference ticket prices and delegates are required to arrange their own travel.

Our people have experienced the challenges and difficulties that residential communities face, and we encourage members to take full advantage of this when contacting us for advice. NAAUC can also assist you in resolving conflict by acting as an independent external mediator. As an objective liaison between residential professionals and student leaders, NAAUC can help to bridge the gap in the event of a conflict and help both parties develop a mutually beneficial solution. Further, for any issues beyond our advice, we can put you in contact with professionals, many of whom are NAAUC alumni, who may be able to provide assistance with the initial steps, free of charge when you have a membership.
As our membership base is made up of students, NAAUC utilises social media as a means of communicating. Our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn pages feature constant student engagement and discussion on current issues facing residences around Australia. This style of communication is very effective and ensures that messages to our members are received instantly. Many use our pages as a forum to ask questions, share ideas and discover information from us and residences in certain areas. SCHOLARSHIPS NAAUC prides itself on promoting diversity in conversation and ensuring equal opportunity for all. To facilitate this, this year we are offering several fully funded scholarships to enable high quality candidates who are interested in student leadership and furthering their residential communities to attend our National Conference. Our scholarships are also designed to maximise personal and professional gain from attending the conference. Each scholarship covers the full cost of a conference ticket; however, does NOT include transport costs unless stated otherwise in the scholarship description. ADDITIONAL BURSARIES Due to the impact this year has had on many residences, alongside our usual scholarships, we are offering additional bursaries to help those residences who have been financially impacted by COVID-19 to assist in covering the cost of conference tickets. COMMUNITY MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP The Community Member scholarship is awarded to an applicant who will not have a formal leadership position within their residence in 2021 but who actively engages with their residential community and strives to better the experiences of those around them.

EQUITABLE ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is for those who, due to location (remote/ rural/ regional), disability or financial circumstances, are hindered in their access to the National Conference. We need these diverse opinions in our change-making conversations and this scholarship aims to promote that. This scholarship will also cover the cost of travel to and from the conference.

INDIGENOUS SCHOLARSHIP NAAUC believes that we can play a significant role in making university campuses more welcoming to Indigenous students. This is of paramount importance in ensuring progress within our residences but also the wider community. This scholarship aims to assist in facilitating an Indigenous student in attending our National Conference to share their experiences and ideas and engage in discussion with student leaders from around Australia.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP The Merit Scholarship is for a student who is keen to undertake a formal project looking into an area of research which they believe is of importance in the residential sector. Previous scholarship recipients have investigated topics such as sex education in Australian residences and diversity in residential student leadership teams.

RESIDENTIAL STAFF SCHOLARSHIP A staff leadership member who has not attended a National Conference previously may apply for the Residential Staff scholarship for our HRC conference. With this scholarship we aim to provide the platform for a staff member to broaden their understanding of matters impacting residential communities across Australia.
2021 NATIONAL CONFERENCE BIDS Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing bright young minds challenged by an inspiring guest speaker, or watching what was a group of strangers at the beginning of the week celebrating their newfound friendships at NAAUC Ball, all the while knowing you helped make it possible. Hosting the 2021 NAAUC National Conference gives you the opportunity to educate, empower and support young leaders around Australia. Every year the NAAUC conference is made possible by the hard work of the NAAUC Executive, State Representatives and conference Working Party, but the NAAUC conference is nothing without a home. The 53rd annual conference will be held in December 2021. To ensure that potential hosts can put together their strongest possible bid, all bidding residences need to complete an application form found on our website www.naauc.edu.au/ conference-bid-2021.
Before submitting your application, we encourage you to consider some of the questions included on the form, such as: • What makes your residence a unique and viable option to host the 2020 conference? • What academic spaces and rooms do you have available at your residence? • Can you guarantee approximately 200 beds for a one-week period in the December university break in 2020? • Are you prepared to share hosting duties with a fellow residence? If so, have you contacted another residence? You will need to provide a letter of support from both your residence and your university to formalise your application.
