Dear Delegates, As you are reading this, the NAAUC team is working tirelessly to plan the 52nd annual conference hosted by Lincoln and St Ann’s Colleges, at the University of Adelaide. It has been 32 years since the National Conference was last hosted in Adelaide, providing us with a unique opportunity to display all that this beautiful region has to offer.

As the peak representative body for students living on campus, NAAUC has continued to grow since it’s establishment in 1968. From a small gathering of student presidents from around the country, NAAUC now has a membership base consisting of over 100,000 students living on campus. This network enables us to listen and improve the residential experience of students through the development of ideas and strategies that assist in positively implementing effective change within our communities, all of which culminates at our national conference.

The National Conference has an impressive schedule, ranging from an unparalleled academic and social programme, to professional networking and partnership opportunities. As residences continue to recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, it provides you with a sustained network of student leaders living in all areas of Australia, of which you can utilise to assist you with the implementation of ideas within your residence. On-campus living provides you with a unique opportunity to make a real difference within your community. We truly believe the programme that we have created will significantly assist you in creating the community that you envision.

This is a unique opportunity for you to develop both personal and professional skills from a group of student leaders all of which have a plethora of knowledge and experience related to the residential sphere. The whole team is incredibly appreciative of your eagerness to be involved with NAAUC, and more specifically, our national conference.

Now, more than ever, residences are looking to their young leaders to pave the way for positive change and visionary thinking and we have no doubt that the national conference will equip you with these skills to become strong, thoughtful and authentic leaders.

Welcome to your very first sneak peak of what’s to come for our 52nd National Conference! We’re so excited to have you on board this journey with us and hope this will give you an idea of what to expect for our Conference in Adelaide!

As a young leader you have the potential to shape your residence’s narrative for not only this year, but for many years to come, making a lasting difference within the place you call your home. Luckily for you, NAAUC is here to help you with this! Be it through the many academic seminars on offer, or through our fantastic social program, we want to make this year's Conference something that you can take tangible lessons and meaningful experiences away from. Remember to keep what you learn at Conference in the forefront of your mind in 2022, this is how you can ensure you create meaningful change, with a lasting impact in your residence.

Over six days you’ll hear from some of the foremost experts on a range of topics relating to university students and residences. You’ll also learn invaluable skills and lessons that will serve you well beyond your time in your residence. But first and foremost, you’ll have fun! For most of you, Conference is going to be a completely new experience, and although it might seem daunting at first, in no time at all you’ll be part of the community. Just remember, everyone else is in the same boat as you!

At the Conference this year, we will be highlighting the importance of embracing vulnerability. This theme will be embedded into everything we do throughout the week. It is our hope that ultimately, you will be in a better position as a leader to critically think about yourself, and your experiences in ways that you never have before. While this may be confronting, it has the potential to be one of the most rewarding and valuable experiences of your life, if you’ll let it be.

We are very excited to be welcoming you all to Adelaide for the first time in over 30 years! The traditional land of the Kaurna people, Adelaide is one of Australia's best kept secrets! A unique and vibrant city, we have no doubt that once you reach the end of this week you will have seen first-hand the opportunities South Australia has to offer. The University of Adelaide is situated on the banks of the Torrens River and in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD. Throughout the conference, we will have the opportunity to utilise a range of historic buildings and contemporary learning spaces.

The University of Adelaide aims to pursue meaningful change and celebrate its proud history, including becoming the first Australian University to admit female undergraduates in 1881. The University applies proven values in the pursuit of contemporary educational and research excellence, meeting local and global communities’ evolving needs and challenges; and striving to prepare graduates for their aspirations and the needs of the future workforce.

In 2021, the NAAUC conference will be jointly hosted by two of South Australia’s residences, Lincoln College and St Ann’s College. Lincoln was founded in 1952.

Originally an all-male college, it began as 23 residents living in a single historic house. Over the past 70 years, Lincoln has grown to become a home for over 200 residents. Lincoln prides itself on its focus on multiculturalism, diversity, and the nurturing of a safe and inclusive environment where all residents can express themselves in their own individual way.

Beginning in 1947, St Ann’s housed all female students and was the first college in Adelaide to open up to co-ed admissions in 1973. The college houses up to 185 students at a time, with a focus on rural and international students. The environment at St Ann’s has been created to support the key skill development of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Lincoln and Ann’s pride themselves on holding close relationships, both through students and staff.

Lincoln and St Ann’s both neighbour the beautiful Brougham Park in the suburb of North Adelaide. Situated just a short walk from Adelaide University and the Adelaide CBD both are ideal locations for living and for the 2021 NAAUC National Conference!

The 2021 Academic Program focuses on a number of key areas relating to students in tertiary residential accommodation.

We have tailored a holistic and highly relevant Academic Program to address not only your residence but you as a leader. Over the week, you will explore yourself as an Individual, reflect upon the Issues affecting your residence, identify the Team in which you build upon and commit to the Community you want to foster.

These themes are designed to encourage you to critically think about the needs of all students in your Residence. Our aim is to provide you with knowledge, training, advice and most importantly, the drive and determination to empower you to make the most of your 2022 leadership tenure.

The Academic Program concludes with ‘The Pitch’. During The Pitch, you will utilise a framework developed by NAAUC to plan out an initiative, event or other practice for your residence. The purpose of The Pitch is to critically evaluate your idea and take back a tangible plan back to your residence, ready for

We have designed the Academic Program to encourage discussions between delegates. Ask questions, share your opinions and challenge ideas - it will make the experience all the more worthwhile.

The NAAUC Conference social program is brought to you by the 2021 Working Party. It delivers a wide variety of events for all delegates. Aside from the dynamic array of guest speakers and academic sessions lined up for the National Conference, delegates should be prepared for an exhilarating social program. Every evening, we will host a different event , aiming to provide a range of engaging entertainment and networking opportunities for you all.

NAAUC aims to create events which are inclusive for all delegates, whether they choose to drink or not. We use the Conference social program to demonstrate how successful events can be organised without the focus of the activity revolving around the consumption of alcohol.

It is our aim that delegates can draw inspiration from our social program and go on to seamlessly adapt or incorporate them into their own residential culture.

Travel costs to and from the conference are not included in the conference ticket prices and delegates are required to arrange their own travel.

Delegates should arrange to fly into Adelaide Airport on Sunday, 28th of November. Check in will be open at our host residences from 9:00am until 1:30pm.

We advise you leave time for a 20-30 minute trip by uber or taxi from the airport, so plan to land in Adelaide before 1pm. If you’re planning to catch public transport make sure to leave a bit more time - around an hour is recommended.

Our host residences have set a strict check out time of 10am on Saturday, 4th December and, with the exception of breakfast , there are no planned activities on the 4th.

As an objective liaison between residential professionals and student leaders, NAAUC can help to bridge the gap in the event of a conflict and help both parties develop a mutually beneficial solution.

Further, for any issues beyond our advice, we can put you in contact with professionals, many of whom are NAAUC alumni, who may be able to provide assistance with the initial steps, free of charge when you have a membership.

To facilitate this, this year we are offering several fully funded scholarships to enable high quality candidates who are interested in student leadership and furthering their residential communities to attend our National Conference.

Our scholarships are also designed to maximise personal and professional gain from attending the conference.

Each scholarship covers the full cost of a conference ticket; however, does NOT include transport costs unless stated otherwise in the scholarship description.

All scholarships require a written statement outlining your suitability for the scholarship and what you hope to achieve by attending the NAAUC 2021 National Conference. The Community Member scholarship is awarded to an applicant who will not have a formal leadership position within their residence in 2021 but who actively engages with their residential community and strives to better the experiences of those around them.

This scholarship is for those who, due to location (remote/ rural/ regional), disability or financial circumstances, are hindered in their access to the National Conference. We need these diverse opinions in our change-making conversations and this scholarship aims to promote that.

This scholarship will also cover the cost of travel to and from the conference.

NAAUC believes that we hold a significant responsibility to make university campuses and residences more welcoming to First Nations students and their cultural histories. This scholarship aims to assist in facilitating a First Nations student in attending our National Conference to

The Merit Scholarship is for a student who is keen to undertake a formal project looking into an area of research which they believe is

A staff leadership member who has not attended a National Conference previously may apply for the Residential Staff scholarship for our HRC conference. With this scholarship we aim to provide the platform for a

Hosting the 2022 NAAUC National Conference gives you the opportunity to educate, empower and suppor t young leaders around Every year the NAAUC conference is made possible by the hard work of the NAAUC Executive, State Representatives and conference Working Party, but the NAAUC conference is nothing without a home.

The 53rd annual conference will be held in December 2022.

Can you guarantee approximately 200 beds for a one-week period in the December university break in 2022?

Are you prepared to share hosting duties with a fellow residence? If so, have you contacted another residence?

To ensure that potential hosts can put together their strongest possible bid, all bidding residences need to complete an application form found on our website https://www.naauc.edu.au/conference-bid-2022 You will need to provide a letter of support from both your residence and your university to formalise your application.
