okingham came out in force to mark the D-Day Anniversary in Market Place on June 6th. The special day was marked with a wreath laying by Town Mayor Rob Comber and military veteran John Patey represented his comrades. Speaking afterwards, veteran John Patey said he was honoured to have been part of the day. “I enjoyed it so much and I was very proud to be there. I had my medals on and thought about my grandad who served in the First World War and my dad who served in World War II. It brought back a lot of memories. I was also collecting for the poppy appeal. John, a Wokingham man through and through has dedicated his life to helping and serving others. He served in the Royal Tank Regiment before becoming a retained fireman, firstly in the 1960s when the fire station was at the town hall and then as sub officer when it moved to Denton Road. And he has been a part of the Poppy Appeal for more than 50 years. “I think the country should be proud of the way in which they have honoured

these men. If it wasn’t for a lot of young lads, we wouldn’t be where we are today and things could have been so different. I definitely think it is something that youngsters should know about, and we must not let their stories be forgotten.” Another D-Day veteran was at the Arborfield celebration. George Winter, 97, served aboard the minesweeper HMS Ganges during WW2. There was a wonderful talk by Kevin

Lenton featuring stories and memories passed down from his father of that remarkable day and a military vehicle display. The Barkham Hookers charity group were there with their crochet poppies and uniform display and Wokingham Poppy Appeal collectors were out in force. Elusive Brewing marked the occasion with their special brew ‘Beacons’ and there was a raffle and give-aways. Continues on page 2
