Facing a mountain to climb in the fight against breast cancer

A

Wokingham cancer clinical researcher and model, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, is embarking on the challenge of a lifetime with a fundraising trek in the Indian Himalayas. On 9th November, Dalia Ismail will be on the life-affirming five-day trek to raise money for breast cancer charity, CoppaFeel! With Giovanna Fletcher at the helm, she will be joined by other celebrity captains including Pete Wicks, Kelsey Parker, and Candice Brown, together with 120 trekkers. Dalia said: “In January 2022, I was delivered the life-changing news that I had breast cancer at 33, after finding a lump and being sent for further investigations. I entered the ward ready to go in for breast surgery I never wanted but needed. It was the start of a long journey and suddenly things felt very real. “After undergoing a year of intensive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiother-

apy and endocrine treatments, I continue on anti-cancer systemic therapy and endocrine treatments for the next five years to reduce my risk for the future.” Fortunately, Dalia’s cancer was caught at a treatable stage, as there is no breast screening for under 50’s. “If I hadn’t found the lump as a sign to get myself checked, it could have been a very different story, as I was almost 20 years away from being eligible for routine mammograms. Younger people represent a small percentage of those diagnosed with breast cancer and are more likely to be treated at a later stage, need more aggressive treatment and can face poorer outcomes, than for our older counterparts.” Dalia, who is being supported in her challenge by Wokingham’s Energie Fitness and over 25 local businesses, added: “I want to raise awareness and empower young people to know their normal, and if in doubt get it checked out! My aim is to see improved re-
