Facing a mountain to climb in the fight against breast cancer

A

Wokingham cancer clinical researcher and model, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, is embarking on the challenge of a lifetime with a fundraising trek in the Indian Himalayas.

On 9th November, Dalia Ismail will be on the life-affirming five-day trek to raise money for breast cancer charity, CoppaFeel!

With Giovanna Fletcher at the helm, she will be joined by other celebrity captains including Pete Wicks, Kelsey Parker, and Candice Brown, together with 120 trekkers.

Dalia said: “In January 2022, I was delivered the life-changing news that I had breast cancer at 33, after finding a lump and being sent for further investigations. I entered the ward ready to go in for breast surgery I never wanted but needed. It was the start of a long journey and suddenly things felt very real.

“After undergoing a year of intensive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiother-

apy and endocrine treatments, I continue on anti-cancer systemic therapy and endocrine treatments for the next five years to reduce my risk for the future.”

Fortunately, Dalia’s cancer was caught at a treatable stage, as there is no breast screening for under 50’s. “If I hadn’t found the lump as a sign to get myself checked, it could have been a very different story, as I was almost 20 years away from being eligible for routine mammograms. Younger people represent a small percentage of those diagnosed with breast cancer and are more likely to be treated at a later stage, need more aggressive treatment and can face poorer outcomes, than for our older counterparts.”

Dalia, who is being supported in her challenge by Wokingham’s Energie Fitness and over 25 local businesses, added: “I want to raise awareness and empower young people to know their normal, and if in doubt get it checked out! My aim is to see improved re-

Strictly star puts in some ‘Energie’ for The Arc installation

ormer Strictly Come Dancing professional Ian Waite took a fitness class in Wokingham recently to help raise awareness and funds for The Arc project.

The dancer was at Energie Fitness gym where two members of the class were in training for the London Marathon, also to raise funds for the art installation.

The aim is for The Arc to change the landscape of Wokingham Borough. It will create a unique skyline nestled in the heart of the new Carnival Hub development, the crown jewel of Wokingham’s regeneration project.

Metal archways will soar over the Hub, their undulations spreading into the space and meeting at different points to form a pathway guiding people in and out of the building. Punctuating this incredible structural form will be the words and phrases of an abstract poem cut out of the metal itself.

The spirit of Wokingham Borough will be captured in the poem.

Ian, who grew up in the Wokingham borough, is an enthusiastic supporter of local charity, Arts4Wokingham, the organisation behind The Arc. Previously, Arts4Wokingham’s Chair, Charlotte Haitham-Taylor was thrilled

that Ian had chosen to offer support: “Ian’s involvement with us is a real bonus. It’s great to have someone on board who recognises just how uplifting, significant and stimulating the arts can be. They not only inspire on a personal level but can also be crucial in defining and shaping public places.”

Wokingham Town Council appoints Mayor Elect for 2024-25

A

t its recent Mayoral Selection Meeting Wokingham Town Council selected Councillor Rob Comber as its Mayor Elect for 202425.

Cllr Rob Comber has been a Town Councillor since 2023, representing the ward of Wescott East since this time. Since Rob started at the council, he has been a member of the Finance & Personnel committee and been Deputy Mayor in 2023-2024.

Cllr Comber’s appointment will be formally ratified at the council’s annual meeting, locally known as Mayor’s Sunday, on Sunday 12th May. Cllr Rob Comber said: “I am honoured to have been elected to serve both the town and the town council as Mayor. Since being elected as councillor, my work has introduced me to many wonderful organisations and people that serve this community. They give generously of their time, effort and money, and I am incredibly pleased that as Mayor, I will be able to promote Wokingham both to, and through, these organisations.”

About Wokingham Town Council Vision: To encourage the life and

vibrancy of Wokingham Town for its existing and future residents and businesses.

Wokingham Town Council comprises 25 councillors who represent the four wards of the town: Emmbrook, Evendons, Norreys and Wescott. The town councillors are elected every four

years. Each year the council elects one of their members to be the town Mayor and Chairman of the Council.

The council delegates much of its business to the following committees: l Amenities: Responsible for the council’s facilities such as parks, allotments, buildings, markets, and playgrounds l Arts & Culture: Encourages, supports and, in conjunction with other organisations, delivers artistic and cultural events to users of the town centre. l Civic: Makes decisions on matters relating to the Mayor’s Civic involvement with the town council. These include Civic Events such as Civic Awards and the honorary staff members. l Finance & Personnel: Controls the finances and general administration of the council. This committee also administers the allocation of grants to local charities and community projects. l Planning & Transportation: This committee acts as a consultative body on planning applications, development proposals and transport issues.

California Crossroads update Firefighters tackle blaze at

A

s the roadworks at California Crossroads enter their third month, it is perhaps time to take a step back and look afresh at what’s happening.

For certain, some residents are facing disruption to journeys that range from the niggling to highly annoying.

The local businesses are also facing a tough time of it. But what about the other perspective?

As much as we all moan about them, the WBC Highways team have done a good job of preventing the much-predicted traffic chaos. The early excavations have also shown up the deep-seated problems underground. Extensive repairs would have had to have been done sooner or later and the Highways team has been vindicated in pushing hard for this work to be done whilst developer funds were available to pay for it. For once, we will have a proper reconstruction of a major junction – and yes, it will finish on time in September!

It’s also been interesting to learn from the project team about the challenge of designing a new junction that improves current traffic flow, without making it so efficient that it draws more traffic onto Nine Mile Ride. It’s a tricky balance.

But what has been lost in the current ‘noise’ is the genuine sense of vision that existed at the start of the project.

The Highways team worked closely with the local Conservative councillors of the time to produce a plan which would both repair the road but also completely rejuvenate the whole area and transform it from its somewhat shabby current look.

I knew those Conservative councillors and whilst we had our differences, I certainly respected them as people of principle who always put the community first. The plan they supported was innovative and they were brave to champion it. As work progresses, I’m increasingly confident that once it’s all finished, we will have a new village centre to be proud of and one that will attract us to make even better use of the local shops and services.

irefighters from every fire station across Wokingham, Bracknell and Reading rushed to reports of a major fire at the Bull Pub in Swallowfield Road, Arborfield, at around 4am on Tuesday morning.

A total of six fire engines and around 30 firefighters battled for nearly two hours to bring the flames under control at the pub. The new barn outside the beer garden has been burnt to the ground during the fire and the rest of the remaining barn will be pulled down.

There is also thought to be damage to be extensive damage to the fixtures and fittings in the beer garden. Roads around the pub have been closed by Thames Valley Police.

In a statement on their social media platform, Thames Valley Police said: “Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue, along with officers from Bracknell and Wokingham ICR, are currently on scene at a large fire at The Bull Public House at Arborfield Cross. Road closures are currently in place for the safety of the public and to enable a safe working environment for crews on scene. Please avoid the area.”

Today a family-run gastro pub, The Bull Inn is known to date back to the 18th century, and The Arborfield Village History Society says it was once visited by Queen Victoria. She reputedly stopped to bait her horses, as she drove from Windsor to Stratfield Saye to pay a visit to the Duke of Wellington. Its history is vast, but it’s original structure dates

back as early as the 1600s.

The original stable building alongside it on the Swallowfield Road, thought to be the main site of the fire, had deteriorated badly by 2004, when it was partly blown down in a gale. It was declared unsafe and was demolished by Wokingham District Council, with a promise from the owners that it would later be rebuilt which did happen.

Lib Dem leader in town

L

eader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Ed Davey visited Wokingham recently and met with Wokingham Parliamentary Candidate Clive Jones.

The pair started their day at the Royal Berkshire Hospital taking questions about costs incurred so far for the new hospital programme.

They then visited Kimel Café in Evendons Lane, Wokingham, for an informal visit. The venue aims to provide supported employment for the neurodivergent community, and to provide a stepping stone training experience, to give young people an opportunity to transition into mainstream employment.

During the morning, they dropped by the Lib Dem office in Wokingham before heading into the town centre for some canvassing in Wescott ward in Sturges Road.

During the visit to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Mr Davey shed some light on the dire need for infrastructure investment. According to a recent Freedom of Information request initiated by the Liberal Democrats, less than one per cent of the total funds have been deployed for the construction of a new hospital facility in Berkshire. Despite government promises amounting to an estimated £650-700 million earmarked for the project, the local NHS Trust has spent merely £5.2 million—primarily on staff time and external contractors—to get the project off the ground.

The annual Brick show The fifth annual Reading Brick Show is taking place in Lower Earley, bringing together a huge collection of amazing LEGO designs. One of the largest shows of its kind in the UK, you can visit Loddon Valley Leisure Centre on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April to see a range of creations from talented builders. There will be fun and games for all ages, including robot battles, downhill racetrack, building tables and more. All tickets are £10 per person.

Weavers Open day

The Berkshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers is having its annual open day on Saturday 20th April. Join them at Charvil Village Hall from 11am to 3pm and take a look at the exhibition and techniques used by members.

There will be the chance to have a go yourself, where you can try out weaving, braiding, colour blending, drop spindling and solar dyeing. Entry is free and you can also pick up items for sale on the day. This event is also suitable for children and refreshments will be served.

Speaking to My Wokingham’s founder, Nick Marr, he said: “I’ve been scandalised by the Conservative Government’s failure to conform to the plans to rebuild the hospital and feel for the staff who are working in shocking conditions.”

He added that he was there to support his friend and colleague Clive Jones and added: “We think we can take complete and outright control of Wokingham Borough Council.”

Mr Davey condemned the Conservative government for what he described as “abandoning staff and patients,” emphasising the lack of funds and planning permissions as a critical oversight. “This Conservative govern-

ment has forsaken the Royal Berkshire Hospital,” he said. He warned of the palpable frustration among Berkshire voters towards the Conservative administration’s failure to fulfil its pledges, particularly with local elections on the horizon. And he added that the Conservative Government was ‘denying people the health service they deserve’.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey concluded: “Voters are fed up with being taken for granted by the Conservative party and at the next election they know it will be a choice between more of the same neglect or a hardworking Liberal Democrat MP that will stand up and fight for their local health services.”

D-Day anniversary celebrations Woodley is hosting a celebration for the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday 6th June from 6pm to 10pm. The event will be held at Woodford Park Memorial Ground, Headley Road, Woodley with a live band performing on stage, entertainers and food and drink stalls.

Awards are far from pie in the sky for Twyford company

A

nd the results are in… the Rural Pie Co in Twyford has won yet more awards.

They have won two bronze awards at this years’ The British Pie Awards.

Their Steak & Double Gloucester and Brisket pie and their Stout & Shallot pies brought home the bacon, making this their fourth consecutive year of awards in Melton Mowbray.

A spokesman said: “We could not be prouder! Thank you to our wonderful team and valued customers for getting us here… we couldn’t have done it without you!”

Born in June 2016, Rural Pie Co Ltd was founded through their love of good quality food and the desire to share this with the local community. Starting off at small, local markets, the business quickly grew and the Twyford cafe, shop and restaurant opened in September 2020.

infield Easter egg hunt was back for the nineth year running and proved to be an egg-cellent way to enjoy the village, get some exercise and some good old fashioned fresh air.

Participants could buy a map for £3 from either Daphne’s Coffee Shop, Binfield Village Stores or Foxes Den Café during the week and enjoy a fun walk around the village.

The hunt ran from March 29th to April 5th with lots of creative and innovative displays outside villager’s front doors and businesses. This year all money raised will go towards school funds for Binfield C E Primary School.

A

family fun day and market called Daisy Fest took place over the Easter weekend at Peacock Farm in Bracknell.

The event saw hundreds of people flock to the venue to see Basil and Crew Farm and to join in an Easter egg hunt. There were bouncy castles, face painting and hair braiding, Kids Bee Happy sand art, a raffle and tombola, and lots of crafts and stalls to browse.

The event was to raise money for local charity Daisys Dream, which is based in Twyford. The charity provides support for children and young people who have been affected by

bereavement, either supporting them in preparing for a loss or working with them following the death of someone important to them.

Community comes together for eighth successful Bracknell BID litter pick

V

olunteers from local businesses were out in force recently as part of a series of organised ‘Tidy Days’ to clean up Bracknell.

The success of Bracknell Business Improvement District’s (BID) eighth community litter pick marked another significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance the general condition and appearance of the Southern and Western Business Areas. Originally launched in March 2022 as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’ campaign, Bracknell BID’s ‘Tidy Day’ sessions now take place throughout the year, providing a great opportunity for local business owners and employees to give back to their community.

Over a lunchtime period, enthusiastic

volunteers from local organisations donate their time, don hi-vis vests, gloves and wield litter pickers as they head out to help tidy up the BID area, regularly collecting over 40 bags of litter a time.

Kevin Morrison, Finance Director from Midwich Ltd said: “It’s a well-deserved break from the office, getting out in the fresh air and helping to serve our local community in the process. It gives us great satisfaction to be able to make a contribution and donate our time to improve the area.”

Sean Griffin, Bracknell BID Manager, added: “We’d like to say a huge thanks to the local businesses who have proactively volunteered their employees and the individuals themselves who have given up their lunch breaks.

“Participants turn up time and again, throughout the seasons, demonstrating their commitment to improving the surroundings of the BID area. It’s also a great opportunity for businesses to get involved in their local business community, network and gain a sense of fulfilment in giving back.

“There’s more Bracknell BID Tidy Days to come this year and we are always on the lookout for volunteers. The BID is currently funding ongoing landscape improvement works in the area including Farleymoor Lake and Longshot Lane, among others with the addition of colourful planters along Western Road too. We encourage everyone to continue enjoying and preserving our beautiful surroundings

this Spring and all year round.”

The Lexicon Charity Fund, managed

by Berkshire Community Foundation, launched in 2018 to support charities and community groups throughout the borough of Bracknell Forest.

undraisers were ‘hot stuff’ recently when Sebastian’s Action Trust hosted a ‘Fire Walk,’ an amazing opportunity to raise funds whilst walking across hot coals.

The event included training as well as a celebration and presentation of a certificate upon completion. It took place at their centre on Upper Broadmoor Road, Crowthorne.

The training was based around proven motivational and psychological methods. It doesn’t involve any elements of hypnosis, spiritual training, chanting or ‘brainwashing’.

The instructor was a world class authorised Blaze ’Fire Master’ Instructor who had undergone a minimum of 200 separate firewalking events at different locations at different times of the year and with varying weather conditions before being invited to train as a Blaze Instructor.

Since Blaze started their training programme for firewalking instructors, they have qualified only nine people to that position in 31 years.

Susan Blues, Sebastian’s Action Trust event fundraiser, said: “It was a great event. It was a bit different which meant it took people out of their comfort zone. They had to be brave and have mind over matter.”

One of the Sebastian’s Trust team took part dressed as a firefighter, while two others from the family service department also put their money where their mouths were. The entire event raised more than £5,000 for the charity.

Susan added: “There was a lovely

atmosphere. Everyone who took part was on a real high – there was a lot of cheering and congratulations and they all really felt as though they had achieved something. Safety was, of course, our first priority and they all took part in full training before they walked on the coals.”

And she said their fundraising was getting more ‘out there’ to put the charity on the map, get their cause known and get more support. The most recent fundraiser was a Red Devils sky dive with the next one, on April 21st, being an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in

Portsmouth.

rowthorne Fire Station hosted a charity car wash to raise money for a worthy cause!

Crowthorne firefighters got in a lather washing cars recently with all donations going to The Fire Fighters Charity.

The event formed part of the National Car Wash League, a competition where fire stations across the UK compete against each other to wash as many cars as possible and raise as much money as possible.

The suggested minimum donation was £5 per car.

Car washes were held at Caversham Road, Crowthorne and Newbury Fire Stations, supported by on duty crews,

the new Apprentice Firefighters and Fire Cadets. Collectively, over £3,600 was raised thanks to the generous.

A spokesman said: “A massive thank you to everyone who made the car washes held this month so successful.”

The Firefighters Charity exists to help all serving and retired members of the UK’s fire family to live healthier and happier.

Ian is Twyford Citizen of the Year for work with beer festival

wyford Parish Council recently announced their 2023 Twyford Citizen of the Year as Ian Wis-

dom.

Ian was presented with a plaque and a gift at the Twyford Together Community Awards event by Twyford Parish Council Vice Chair John Bowley.

The councillors agreed that in recognition of being outstanding Twyford citizen Ian should join previous recipients of the Twyford Parish Council Citizen of the Year award and wish to offer a huge thank you to all residents who made nominations for this category.

For the past 13 years, Ian has been the driving force behind the Twyford Beer Festival, an event that has be-

come an annual gathering in the village but most importantly, it has raised thousands of pounds for the male cancer charity, Orchid.

The festival itself welcomes people from far and wide to enjoy some great beers, ciders, food and music and all staff and acts give their time for free to help raise funds.

Ian also provides the accompanying bar at Wokingham Music Festival and gets involved with other community events such as the Twyford Village Fete.

A spokesman said: “Today, as we honour Ian as our Citizen of the Year, let us also take a moment to reflect on the importance of community involvement.”

Get bowled over by club

A unique academy for martial arts – from black belt to black tie

ince Storm Family Martial Arts was Founded in 2018, they have grown from zero to 500 members in the past six years. Digger proudly says: “We are unique in the martial arts industry in that we position ourselves as a Leadership & Life Skills Academy first and foremost. By that I mean we focus very heavily on character development and each month we have a theme such as respect, kindness, cooperation, determination, gratitude and honesty”.

In the last edition of My Wokingham, we wrote about Digger, who won Silver for Team GB for the European Team in Birmingham, and in 2023, also took the Bronze at the World United Martial Arts Federation(WUMA) In Greece.

We learnt about what his academy has been doing to help the planet.

Digger, 52, from Woodley, said: ”We recently launched a Community Service Award where a parent can email Storm HQ to tell us about an act of kindness by their child. We then present them with the award in class the following lesson. This influences other children to identify opportunities where

they can be kind and we believe this has a wonderful impact in the local community.” Other past community and charity events Digger has organised include fundraisers. In October 2023, the group raised £610 for Breast Cancer Now ‘Wear It Pink’ charity. Students were able to purchase and wear a pink belt in class all month.

In November last year Digger showcased a ladies self defence workshop in Maidenhead. From this they raised £750 for Berkshire Women’s Aid, a wonderful charity supporting women and children locally. In December 2023 the team delivered over £2,000 worth of toys to the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice, made up with do-

nations from Storm’s FMA students, parents and community outreach. Alexander Devine provides specialist care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

The most recent accomplishment for the group is being shortlisted at The

Thames Valley Award for Outstanding Contribution To The Community. They will be attending the black tie event on April 18th in Reading.

Storm Family Martial Arts run classes weekly and you can get involved.

It’s all fits & giggles at comedy club Jewel in the crown of air museum gets a new lease of life

very now and then, we all need a bit of laughter in life, so when I heard about comedy nights in Woodley, I thought I would contact the man who made it happen.

Jonathan Elston, the founder of Laughter Craft Comedy, launched the club in October of 2022 and organises comedy nights all over Berkshire, including right here in Woodley. Jonathan said: “Every show has been a sell-out.” He added: “Having over 15 years of experience in the industry as a comedian myself has been invaluable, as I have previously worked with all of the acts we feature.” Although the company covers the country, the most recent shows in our area have taken place at Crumbs in Woodley Precinct.

They also have another night of comedy set for the Loddon Hall in Twyford on 20th April with comedians Terry Alterton, Steve Williams, and Jack Skipper.

A regular audience member says, “Jonathan puts on a great show no matter the venue. His relationship with

venues and comedians alike, combined with his marketing skills, means that he not only knows how to draw a crowd but keep them entertained.”

he jewel in the crown of the Berkshire Aviation Museum in Woodley was recently given a new lease of life after having its whole body resprayed - the Herald is the aircraft in question. It’s arguably one of the museum’s top attractions, having been with the museum since 1993. Once reconstruction was completed in 1997, the whole plane was grounded at its new home in Woodley.

According to a volunteer at the site, “It took over 14,000 man hours to complete the reconstruction from 1993 to 1997 in the position it now stands.”

The Handley Page Herald G-APWA, flown by the late HRH The Duke of Edinburgh during his tour of 10 South American Countries in 1962, was restored by The Herald Society and later unveiled by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. On the 16th April 1997, it found its rightful spot at the Berkshire Aviation Museum. One volunteer said, “It was around October last year that a professional company came out to completely respray the Herald, but because of bad weather, work was inter-

rupted at points, and we had to wait for the rain to go away before work could begin again.” It took around a month to complete the work, but the end result is “stunning,” we to says a volunteer. "We are very proud of the Herald and what it represents to us at the museum.”

The seats on the plane have a heritage too, appearing in not one, but two series of the hugely popular TV Show The Crown. My tour guide and volunteer, told us the story about how they had the call from a producer, asking if they could use some of the seats of the plane to recreate scenes for the hit show. Curator of the Museum Ken gave the go-ahead.

Dubrovnik – the pearl of the Adriatic

F

amously, described as ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’ Dubrovnik is a stunning city with an amazing Old Town, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The stunning old town includes the well-preserved city walls which you can walk along with the main part of the city compact and easy to walk with stunning limestone-paved streets worn smooth by the passage of time.

The narrow streets are filled with restaurants and small shops, perfect places for pit stops on a leisurely stroll through the city.

Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains.

Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated

by UNESCO. The Stradun is the main thoroughfare through the Old Town, the perfect location for film buffs. It was a filming location for Star Wars Episode VIII and if you are a Game of Thrones fan, one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik is to take a Game of Thrones tour.

Taking a ride on the cable car is a must-do to the summit of Mount Srdj if you want an aerial view over Dubrovnik. The views of the city and the Adriatic Coast are spectacular.

The picturesque and charming town of Cavtat is situated only 18 km from Dubrovnik. Its best kept secret is the old town centre that hides many lovely cafés and restaurants while it has a stunning waterfront lined with palm trees.

We stayed at the Villa Carmen, a family-run apartment in Mlini, halfway between Cavtat and Dubrovnik. Just a 15-minute drive from the airport, it was the perfect location to get to the walled

city quickly yet just 10 minutes in the opposite direction was the picture postcard town of Cavtat with its beautiful waterfront and stunning beaches.

We ate at Restaurant Marinero, complete with boat bar with a table and seating in an old vessel.

When on holiday, we love to sample the local food – and whenever pos-

sible take home some local olive oil.

We also always try to find a Christmas decoration from our destination so it can remind us of warmer days when winter stretches out ahead of us.

he Easter bunny welcomed hundreds of people to Holme Grange Craft Village’s Easter fayre.

There were loads of things for families to do including an Easter trail, face-painting and inflatables. There

were dozens of craft stalls selling unique and creative gifts as well as a tombola stall while there was plenty to eat and drink as well including an ice cream van.

And organisers said they were delighted with the turnout.

At the ‘Hub’ of the community

T

he Charity and Community Hub in Wokingham Borough has seen a positive partnership develop between the borough council and the voluntary, charity and community sector which are based there. The hub brings together a number of voluntary, charity and community organisations under one roof. It provides high quality information, advice and support to enable people to access the right services to meet their individual needs and circumstances at the right time. JACKY HAYLER from My Wokingham spoke to some of the charities to find out their thoughts about how the hub works.

When the centre opened, Cllr Keith Baker MBE said: “Our charities and voluntary organisations make a huge difference to our communities and our residents, having them all together under roof is a moment to celebrate. It was a joy to see the new hub and how it’s already making a difference to our residents.”

And Cllr Charles Margetts, executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services, added: “Working alongside the voluntary sector in our borough is a clear priority for us, as we know it produces better outcomes for those who live in our area. This coordinated approach by the council with our voluntary community sector partners means those who need help can get it promptly from one place.

Bringing these brilliant organisations under one roof is built on partnership working over the last few years.”

Formerly known as Wokingham, Bracknell and Districts Mencap, Promise Inclusion supports adults and children with learning disabilities and/or autism, their parents, carers

and their families. They provide a range of services including information and carer and family support, activities for children with learning disabilities and/or autism, activities for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, support for siblings, activities for carers and campaigning on local and national issues.

CEO Mary Durman said: “The partnership is really working. Being able to walk down the corridor and pop in on numerous charities is helpful from both the staff and clients’ point of view. It really does make a significant difference.”

Mary added that the hub is well located close to Shute End, bus routes and in the town centre, making the services easy to access. And she said another benefit is being able to share resources, helping to reduce costs for each charity.

The Wokingham Volunteer Centre is located there. They place volunteers and promote the benefits and wellbeing that volunteering brings, provide support and training to charities, run the Wokingham Transport Scheme for local elderly residents and run the Green ‘N’ Tidy gardening scheme for elderly and disabled residents.

Nick Fellows, chief officer for Wokingham Volunteer Centre said: “The hub gives you a chance to work alongside other charities with similar aims and objectives. There is a mutual support and an understanding of what’s going on in the community and how we can understand and better meet their needs.

“In the voluntary sector, a lot of the time different organisations are dotted around but Wokingham is particularly effective in uniting this sector.

It enables you to talk things through

with different organisations on an informal basis, rather than the formality of Zoom or Teams. There is an element of sociability, and you feel less isolated as a result.”

Wokingham is one of the wealthiest towns in England - but it’s also one of the most expensive places to live, and not everyone has an income that lets them manage.

Wokingham Foodbank provides a minimum of three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them by one of the 70 care agencies who they work with in Wokingham.

Annette Medhurst, Wokingham Foodbank Manager, said: “Being co-located with other charities provides us with the opportunity to give better signposting for the foodbank clients. For example, if someone attended the foodbank and disclosed that they had been the victim

of domestic abuse we can easily link them up with Cranstoun.

“Our foodbank works on a referral basis and being located in the Hub has provided a much better environment for us to talk to other charities and get them on board as referral agencies. For example, we now receive referrals from charities such as The Link Visiting Scheme, which we didn’t in the past. In addition, the foodbank manager attends a few meetings with other charity leads, this provides a forum for discussion and can help lead to more joined up ways of working.”

She added that there is reassurance that they face similar challenges in terms of funding, volunteer availability and dealing with an ever-changing landscape of challenges for their clients.

that the foodbank does have a very supportive team, drawing from Trussell Trust resources for support and guidance.

“As a charity we only occupy our space operationally for about eight hours a week. Most of our social activity revolves around our warehouse space in Winnersh. The Hub does have an occasional coffee morning for staff/volunteers but we often don’t have people on site.”

Healthwatch Wokingham Borough is the independent champion for people who use health and social care services. Grainne Colgan, Engagement Officer for Healthwatch Wokingham said: “Being part of the community hub in Wokingham town offers many benefits. One key benefit is that it increases the visibility of the services and support provided by us and the other charities to local residents and their families.

She added that the community hub model allows greater accessibility and collaboration amongst the charities themselves. “We know of one another, can share knowledge, access resources, offer mutual support, network and collaborate. Having several local charities based in a central area has enhanced accessibility among us. We have increased connections, communication, and collaboration with the other charities. Additionally, the hub allows us all to conveniently visit each other’s offices for any queries we may have (anytime), information gathering, or for face-to-face meetings.

Grainne said it also provides them with valuable insights into the charity sector as a whole, offering opportunities for the charities to come together, learn from one another,

share knowledge, discuss best practices, and engage collaboratively.

She added: “In the post-COVID world, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of people confidently returning back to work in their offices both locally and nationally.

We maintain a regular presence in the hub, engage in community outreach and remote work from home.

There is a sense of community within the hub, providing us with regular opportunities for interaction and connection with the other charities.”

Throughout the year, there are various opportunities for all the charities at the hub to come together and socialise. For example, during Christmas time, everyone is invited to gather over mince pies and coffee/ tea. Additionally, staff teams have the chance to participate in charity events, like Promise Inclusion’s fundraising curry night at the beginning of the year.

Cranstoun provides services for adults and young people facing difficulties with alcohol and other drugs, domestic abuse, housing and criminal justice. For over 50 years, Cranstoun has supported people to rebuild their lives, inspired transformation and empowered positive change.

Service manager Katie Lloyd said: “The hub is such a good idea with everyone under one roof. We might have a client with more than one need so potentially they can get the help they need in one place. The space is also very handy with different rooms and communal areas and as smaller charities we can even share equipment and facilities such as a projector or laminator.”

Involve is an infrastructure support organisation which essentially means

that they work to help other charities to develop and grow. They do this by providing multiple support services for organisations, as well as various community wellbeing schemes. They aim to support causes that benefit the community, and the hope is to act as a beacon the third sector can rely on for all kinds of important information, support and advice.

Julie Bedborough is part of Involve and the Hub co-ordinator. “We act as a signpost to the correct place.

Many people come to the CAB office but don’t know about the many other charities here. We can work out which charity best supports their needs and point them in the right direction.”

If no one is in a particular office, Julie can make contact with them. She makes sure to offers a safe space where people can come and just sit for a quiet moment. She added: “You don’t know what you don’t know. We are effectively the hub of the hub.”

Other charities at the community hub are: l CLASP is a self-advocacy group for people with learning disabilities in the Wokingham Borough. As a user-led organisation, CLASP is run by their members. They employ people with learning disabilities and offer voluntary opportunities. They support members to have their say about how local services are developed, and provide one-to-one support, information, advice and signposting. l The Link Visiting Scheme was founded 25 years ago to help reduce loneliness amongst older people and to bring generations together in friendship and shared experiences. We offer one-to-one befriending, Friendship Groups, activities, events and long-term projects such as Community Kitchen and Link to Nature.

We even provide fun and support on Christmas Day l Mind in Berkshire are there to support you, perhaps you are struggling to sleep, feeling overwhelmed with stress, dealing with multiple responsibilities or feeling unable to concentrate. Their supportive workers will provide you with tools that may help you feel more able to manage these challenges. l The Citizens Advice Bureau exists to help people find a way forward, whoever they are, whatever their problem. They provide free, confidential and impartial advice, information and support to anyone living or working in Wokingham Borough. Their support covers a range of areas including issues with welfare benefits, debt, housing, employment law, consumer and much more.

Easter bunnies enjoy a special browse at craft fayre

E

aster bunnies had a treat in store when they visited Sindlesham Court recently.

The grade II listed venue held an Easter fayre with all manner of craft stalls to browse. Unique, handmade and artisan gifts were available to buy including candles, jewellery and ceramics and visitors could even pick up a chocolate gift for that last-minute Easter present.

Entrance was free and with plenty of free parking, it provided the perfect place to have a browse and enjoy refreshments from the on-site café.

There was also the chance to win a prize in the tombola.

undreds of bikers roared into town on Good Friday for the annual Easter egg run, organised by the Thames Vale Vultures.

More than 2,000 Easter eggs were handed over at Abbey Rugby Club, donated to Southcote Children’s Centre and the Rotary Club who distributed the eggs to those in need.

Riders from across the South of England converged at Stadium Way in Tilehurst, riding through Reading ending up at The Abbey Rugby Club in Emmer Green.

A spokesman said: “A huge thanks to everyone who turned up to support this year’s run.

We didn’t count the bikes this year but think there were over 200, plus pillions, who braved the weather to join in. Every egg is a smile and this year the grand total of eggs donated was 2030. That’s a lot of smiles!

“Thank you so much to everyone who donated and special thanks to those who went out collecting before the day, which really boosted this year’s numbers.”

Cracking creation from the Hurst Hookers

A

giant egg led the Easter celebrations in Hurst after the ever-creative Hurst Hookers made the stunning creation.

The work of art took pride of place in the village opposite the pond and was finished off with a giant bunny on top made by Geraldine Eglington. The creation is also raising funds in memory of local Tom Pearce who died of bowel cancer aged 49 last August. Tom’s wife, Catherine, is a member of the ‘Hookers’.

The fund currently stands at £1, 395.

Work started on the egg back in October after the initial ideas was mentioned by Amanda Carruthers while David Howarth built the frame that supports it. Hurst Hookers were asked to crochet granny squares 7 x 7 inches edged in yellow and approximately 250 squares were required. As they needed a suitable place to store and work

on the egg Chris James, who lives in the village, kindly offered one of his small outbuildings. He made a suitable door and allowed the team to use power for lighting.

He also provided transport and manpower to move the egg frame to and from places and helped with its final resting place opposite the pond.

There is a QR Just Giving code connected to a Bowel Cancer Charity if people appreciate ‘The Hurst Hookers’ work and feel they would like to give.

The egg frame will be for sale after Easter. Suitable offers considered.

Squares will be removed and refashioned into lap blankets and given away to a charity.

Groups unite to create inclusive space for SEND families

racknell’s magical Salt Kingdom and Lower Earley’s SEND (Special Educational Needs & Difficulties) group, Together: One Step at a Time have created a fun, sensory inclusive space for families with SEND children.

Jenna from the group wants to encourage families to come and explore this sensational experience which has many health benefits for everyone!

Finding holistic and relaxing SEND sessions can be hard to come by, but Jenna is passionate about making safe, fun and inclusive places for families to come and share experiences together.

The Salt Kingdom and Together: One Step at a Time, work together to create an amazing holistic experience for everyone. Jenna plays and interacts with a small group of children whilst parents can relax. Participants inhale infused salt air and the floor has pink salt on which in itself creates a unique grounding sensory experience. There is a play house with a slide and a variety of resources to play and explore on the pink beach.

Jenna brings some sensory toys for the

kids, and often if there’s a theme coming up, she’ll bring fun themed resources!

Jenna is DBS checked and has over 16 years of experience working in early years, along with a degree in Learning and Education. She has experience of SEND and has an autistic twin brother, who Jenna says ‘is her passion behind everything she does’. Jenna saID: “I

am passionate about making inclusive safe spaces for children to explore. I know the importance of spending time together as a family and I like to find new experiences to offer this.

“As a sibling of SEND I understand how families can feel vulnerable and this is why I want to make environments where children can be themselves free from judgement.”

Parents have said ‘My son attended a session today with his dad and Jenna had a fantastic interaction with my son, definitely recommend and can’t wait for future sessions!’ and ‘My daughter and I have been three times, I just love having the chance to relax whilst my daughter is having fun with Jenna’.

H

undreds of people ‘flocked’ to Lockey Farm in Arborfield over the Easter weekend for their lambing event.

The good weather meant the farm could hold their close encounters with the new-born lambs. Adults and children alike took great delight in holding the babies which were just days old – and saw even younger lambs in the pens with their mums that were just hours old.

Owner Graham Adams took small groups on a tour around the farm, giving an informative talk about their history and the challenges currently facing farms like theirs including the recent bad weather.

Visitors were introduced to the resident turkey called Terence and also met Marmite the donkey before the main event in the barn.

Youngsters were also able to play on some toy tractors as well as sitting in the real thing.

Lockey Farm was a new farm started by Graham and Caroline Adams 15 years ago. In 2012 they opened a new coffee shop and expanded the Farm Park area with a children’s play area.

They now employ 20 local staff including a Master Butcher with 43 years’ experience and two further, equally experienced butchers.

They pride themselves on being a friendly, family farm and work hard to support local businesses and charities and to cater to the needs of the local community.

total of 750 pupils from across the borough took part in in the annual Wokingham Area Schools Music Association (WASMA) performances.

Shows were held at The Hexagon theatre in Reading last month and 750 children performed in front of 2,200 people.

This year’s theme was songs from the silver screen and had the title ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ with inspiration drawn from the likes of Toy Story.

Since 1947, WASMA has hosted annual music events, providing musical opportunities to primary school children in the area. The performances

focused on singing together in a large choir, but also featured drama, poetry and dance.

CLASP holds charity coffee morning

LASP recently held a charity coffee morning at their Coffee Shop Drop-In at The Meeting Place Coffee House at The Bradbury Centre.

Delicious homemade cakes were on offer along with hot and cold drinks and of course a chat too.

Takings from the morning were donated to CLASP, and an amazing £141.80 was raised!

A spokesman said: “A big thank you to The Meeting Place Coffee House, all those who made cakes and everyone who visited and supported CLASP to support adults with learning disabilities in the Wokingham Borough.”

The CLASP Coffee Shop Drop-In runs every Tuesday morning at The Bradbury Centre from 10am to 12noon.

Time to register for Wokingham Swimathon

T

he Wokingham Swimathon is a new team event, organised byWokingham Lions Club, and designed solely as a means for schools,charities, and local organisations to raise funds, either for themselves or their nominated charity.

It’s simple to enter and they get to keep every penny they receive in donations.

What is a Swimathon? Well, it’s not a race. Each team swims for 50minutes in relay format to achieve as many laps of the pool as they can (two lengths = one lap). Adults swim a lap, but young children can swim onelength (25 meters), with another child swimming the return length. It’sall about having fun, swimming with your friends, family or colleagueswhilst supporting those in need in our community.

The Hairy Biker’s Victoria Sponge

F

ollowing the tragic death of Dave Myers earlier this year, this Victoria Sponge (with a twist of blackberries and spiced cream!) is a poignant tribute to one half of the inspiring culinary duo.

Ingredients: l Sponge cakes l 225 g butter, softened l 225 g caster sugar l 4 eggs l 225 g self-raising flour l 1½ tbsp (30 ml) lemon juice lIcing sugar or caster sugar to dust, optional Blackberries

l 1 punnet blackberries l 3 tsp caster sugar l 3 tsp crème de cassis (optional)

Cream

l 250 ml double or whipping cream l 1½ tbsp icing sugar l ½ tsp ground cardamom l ¼ tsp ground allspice l ¼ tsp ground cinnamon l ¼ tsp ground mace

Top tip: When creaming together the butter and sugar (step two), be sure to get it as airy as possible - it should be almost mousse-like. This should take a good five minutes.

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Butter and line two 20-21cm sandwich tins.

2. Using a hand-held electric beater or a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until very light and fluffy.

3. Add the eggs one at a time with a tablespoon of the flour, mixing lightly between each addition, then add the remaining flour. Add as much lemon juice as necessary to give a dropping consistency, then divide between two tins. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the sponge has shrunk away from the sides slightly, is springy to touch and a very light golden brown. Leave to cool in the tins for at least 10 minutes, then turn out onto a cooling rack.

4. For the filling, put the blackberries in a bowl and sprinkle over the caster sugar and liqueur, if using.

Leave to marinade for a short while – they will give out some juices.

5. Whip the cream, then fold in the icing sugar and spices – the cream needs to be just beyond the soft peak stage – subsequently pile this onto one of the cooled sponges.

Top with the blackberries and pour over any juices. Place the remaining sponge on top. Dust with icing sugar and if desired add some additional blackberries on top, then serve.

Is Barlow Back… For Good?

n June 2023 the iconic pop group Take That announced a grand return to the stage with This Life On Tour – a spectacular 29-date journey across 15 cities, marking their first major outing since their hiatus between 2019 and 2023.

All is set to begin in April with three opening nights in Sheffield and symbolises something of a renaissance for the band. Gary Barlow, the band’s esteemed songwriter of 13 UK number one singles, shared his enthusiasm.

“There’s an electric feeling about going back on tour, especially after such a relatively long break. This Life On Tour isn’t just about performing our new songs; it’s a celebration of our journey, our fans and the music that has been part of so many lives,” he says.

The broadcast was made in a rather dramatic fashion, with dozens of stadiums and venues across the UK and Ireland lighting up with the band’s distinctive double-T logo, a sight that was shared widely on social media, including Barlow’s own Instagram account.

The tour is named after their current and ninth studio album This Life and to celebrate a fourth decade of music since they first appeared on the scene with 1991 debut single Do What U Like. It marks their first studio release

in five years and has been met with critical acclaim.

Featuring the lead single Windows, the album showcases a matured sound reflecting the band’s evolution over the years. Barlow describes it as being “filled with our experiences, hopes and memories. It’s deeply personal yet universal. We’ve poured every bit of ourselves into this album.”

The tour will not only cover major cities like Leeds, Dublin, London, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham but also includes several other UK landmarks, such as Plymouth, Swansea and Nottingham.

After the final UK date in Bristol on Saturday 8th June, the boys will move on to a series of shows in key European cities, including Berlin, Rome

and Madrid. This extensive tour underscores the band’s enduring popularity and the global appeal of their music.

Reflecting on the band’s journey and the excitement of touring again, the 53-year-old enthuses: “Every time we step on stage, it’s a new adventure.

Crowthorne to host Armed Forces Veterans’ Hub

R

oyal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) will be hosting the latest event in the series of successful Armed Forces Veterans’ Hub Events, which will take place on 14th May at Crowthorne Community Fire Station between 10am and 1pm.

During the morning, attendees will be able to speak to a range of organisations and charities that support the armed forces community, such as Operation Courage - the NHS service

that provides specialist care for those Armed forces veterans suffering from a mental health crisis - Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity) and the Royal Navy Association.

Paul Brooks, Head of Assets and Armed Forces Champion for the Service and a Crowthorne resident and veteran, said: “I’m delighted to be able to support another Veterans’ Hub event hosted at our fire stations, which

will offer a space for veterans to come together and meet one another, as well as the wonderful organisations who will be there.

“As a Service, we are committed to supporting our armed forces community and placing our fire stations at the heart of the local community they serve. Hosting the Hub meetings is just one of the ways we are fulfilling both commitments, while also meeting some fantastic new people along the

way.”

The Armed Forces Veterans’ Hub is open to all veterans and there is no need to book in advance.

The Armed Forces Veterans’ Hub was launched in Royal Berkshire in 2020 following receipt of the Gold Award in the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme. This affirms the Fire Authority and Service’s ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces community.

ll manner of superheroes were in Lower Earley on Saturday for the annual Comic Con meeting.

Spiderman and Batman mingled alongside ghostbusters and Star Wars figures as fans of the screen both big and small donned their costumes in testament to their favourite characters.

The family-friendly event, at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Lower Earley, also saw stalls with displays and props from Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Pokèmon, Spider Man, Mario Kart, and Ghostbusters as well as traders

selling collections and memorabilia.

Celebrities were also on hand including Only Fools and Horses actress Tessa Peake-Jones who played Raquel, who admitted to enjoying seeing everybody dressed up.

Huge industry stars will be in attendance including Sophie Aldred (Dr Who), Garrick Hagon (Biggs, Red Three in Star Wars), Michael Carter (Bib Fortuna in Star Wars) and Fem Taylor (Oola, Star Wars). Other guest artists included Nick Gribbion, David Leach and Karl Jones.

Litter pick event was a load of rubbish!

D

ozens of people took to the street recently to take part in a national litter pick.

There was a huge Earley Litter Pick organised by Earley Town Council with the Earley Adopt a Street Initiative and Earley Environmental Group.

For the fourth year running the wonderful McDonalds team volunteered their time to help in Earley. McDonalds had two groups, both morning and afternoon, and covered an enormous area!

The photo, of the afternoon team, shows only about one quarter of the total number of bags of litter that collected!

A spokesman said: “Thanks also to the residents who stopped and said ‘thank you’ to litter pickers across Earley.”

And a thank you went out to the Seven Red Roses at Maiden Place who provided a free cup of coffee for all litter pickers.

Pauline Jorgensen, who took part, said: “On the way round the litter pick we were talking about how long it had been going on. I remembered I had three certificates given to me when I coordinated it on a few occasions when we had very few staff at the town council (many years ago) - not sure if the own still have their copies but this is the earliest I have, 1989 - so Earley have been doing this for at least 35 years! (I was a very young councillor honestly!)”

And someone posted on Facebook: “This is a great initiative and thank you to all who volunteered. It saddens me though that this is required. If people took their litter home or put it in bins provided it wouldn’t be necessary for people to give up their time to clean up other people’s mess. But thank you for making the area look better.”

Thank you to all the volunteers at Woodley Adopt a Street Project for their litter picking efforts on Saturday!

Woodley’s efforts saw 23 volunteers join in who collected 34 bags of litter.

Other areas who held coordinated litter picks included Arborfield, Barkham, Charvil, Crazies Hill, Finchampstead, Remenham, Sonning, Swallowfield, Twyford, Winnersh, Wokingham Without and Wokingham town centre.

It’s a full day of family entertainment, all in aid of local causes and – it’s free to enter!

Along with the above there will also be a fun fair, Morris Dancers, Punch & Judy, a magic show and internationally renowned Giant Balloon Show.

This event is run by The Wokingham Lions Club supporting two local charities, Camp Mohawk and Thames Hospice.

18th May: The University’s Community Festival returns to Campus this year on Saturday 18 May. 11am to 4pm The Festival brings together local residents, alumni, community groups and small businesses for a programme of live music, theatre and performance, community stands, crafts, street food, and research activities.

Last year’s research programme included a research exhibition featuring stands with hands-on activities, children’s talks, research talks, and a multilingual storytelling activity.

The activities were popular and well received by both visitors and participants, and this year’s Festival aims to expand on these activities and attract new audiences.

Bracknell branch of NatWest announces closure

T

he NatWest branch in Bracknell has announced it will be closing its doors permanently from September.

A spokesman for NatWest said: “The way customers like to bank with us has changed, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and

easier way to bank. Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously, and we’re committed to helping our customers manage their money online as well as through in-person banking.”

Statistics revealed a dramatic drop in visits to the branch between 2019 and 2023. “Closing a branch is a difficult decision and not one we take lightly.

We understand that this branch closure may be challenging for many and we’re working hard to help prepare our customers and colleagues for closure.”

The branch, located at 5, High Street, will close on September 4th.

NatWest is planning to introduce a community pop-up following the closure that will be based in a community

venue near to the closing branch. The service will be available for up to 12 weeks and will provide information on how customers can use their local Post Office for cash-based transactions.

Bracknell is reportedly one of 80 branches NatWest is planning to close this year.

Colourful festivals as communities unite for Holi PHOTOS BY PAUL KING

esidents from all over Wokingham and Bracknell enjoyed a day full of vibrant colours, joy, and fun at two locations for the Holi Festival of Colours!

The events took place in Reading at the Wren School and Burghfield Sports Club.

The Annual Holi Festival at Wren is an event not to be missed with DJ Bhav’s music, scrumptious Food stalls.

There was dancing, Dhol drums and powder colour was available for sale.

Norin Syeda organised the Holi Festival in Burghfield for the entire community. All ages, races and genders were welcome, and they had a gathering of 280 people.

Norin said: “Our guests were happy with the smooth running with great music by Rythamix Team and Drumline Entertainment who performed live Dhol. We had live dosa counters and received positive feedback.”

Holi is a popular and significant Hindu festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours, Love, and Spring. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna. Holi is a playful love story about Krishna and Radha.

According to mythology, Lord Krishna who was well-known for his naughty nature, griped to his mother about his dark skin tone in contrast to Radha’s beautiful complexion. In response, his mother suggested that he colour Radha’s face to match his colour.

ringing the spirit of Bombay to Britain, and merging east with west, Bollywood came to Garth Hill College recently.

Bollywood Dance Worldwide brought their energy and enthusiasm to a performance at the Bracknell school in association with shelter for stray animals in Vrindavan and Reading Berkshire Group.

The event, at the school in Bull Lane, Bracknell, included a DJ performance and refreshments were available. The vibrant exhibition saw performances from a wide range of groups spanning the generations culminating in medals being awarded.

The colourful show performed to sell-out crowds who appreciated the rhythms and music.

Taken too soon but whose image will live on

T

he world recently lost a very talented photographer by the name of Kevin Sutton.

A few years ago, Kevin started taking photographs for a local Wokingham newspaper and My Wokingham photographer Paul King took him under his wing and they became close friends.

Kevin’s photos skills just kept on going and after a spell in newsprint, Kevin started taking photos at local Wokingham nightclub, The Spin, as well as other venues across Berkshire. Kevin moved into club management, a job he loved, as well as taking photos. He then joined the Gig House in Wokingham as one of the managers before moving to the sister club in Andover to become general manager at the venue.

With Kevin’s very powerful photo skills, he started up his photo rounds again, touching the hearts of many more people across Berkshire, who will miss such a skilled young man.

Kevin’s passion for photography was truly evident in his work, capturing the

moments and memories of so many people’s lives. His talent and dedication to his craft made him a beloved figure in the Berkshire community, and his photos will continue to bring joy and nostalgia to those who knew him.

In addition to his photography skills, Kevin was known for his infectious energy and positive attitude. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone he met. Kevin’s warm personality made him a friend to many, and his presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Though Kevin may no longer be with us, his legacy lives on through his incredible photographs and the memories he created for so many.

He will always be remembered as a talented photographer and a cherished friend to all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. Rest in peace, Kevin Sutton. Your light will continue to shine bright in the hearts of those who knew you.

Easter at country park certainly egg-cels!

ellington Country Park have done it again with their Easter special.

Little ones were hopping with egg-citement at the feast of entertainment on offer. As we arrived the setting had been transformed with giant eggs and bunnies everywhere.

Junk Jodie was back making fabulous Easter crafts while youngsters could join Woolly and their friend Bo Peep for a brand-new interactive story.

Since we had last been in October, the miniature railway had been trans-

formed from a spooky Halloween ride into a bright and breezy spring jaunt with bunnies, lambs and wildlife galore, as well as Easter eggs to spot.

But for us it was the circus show which proved the biggest hit. Slapstick clowns, jugglers and acrobatics, as well as an aerialist made it a show not to be missed. Our little bunny loved the energy and was clapping along. At just 22 months it was the first show of its kind she had been to, and she loved every minute. But maybe the energy was too much for her – 25 minutes in

and she was fast asleep on mum’s lap.

Despite this, the show was also great for the adults to enjoy.

We headed round to the animal farm where we got to feed baby goats as well as the rest of the menagerie including donkeys, alpacas and pigs.

The mini golf course had a spring twist and while the adults were competitive to say the least, out little lamb Elsie was just happy to put the balls into the holes!

And with lots of play areas to suit a wide range of ages, Wellington Country Park delivers on so many levels.

Before we left, we got to see the Easter bunny, a first for our granddaughter who was happy observing from a distance.

Their next event is the Dino Takeover from May 27th to 31st. Take a walk on the wild side for another exciting year and journey to a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Come face to face with a dinosaur - from the fierce T-Rex to the agile Raptor there are plenty of opportunities throughout the day to witness these fantastic beasts.

hildren got up close and personal with all manner of exotic creatures at St. Paul’s parish hall in Wokingham this week.

One World Animals paid the area a visit and children were encouraged to experience the wonder of different creatures. Among the animals brought along were snakes, owls and a giant tortoise.

The company organises lifetime ex-

periences in homes, classrooms, and events with their small, dedicated team who have been working with animals in films, TV and education for 20 years.

Bringing their passion to a wider audience, they host hands-on experiences with insects, arachnids, reptiles, small mammals and birds when children get to meet, hold and learn all about the animals.

oints were shared following a spirited clash with the Imps. Tyler Bindon’s last-minute header negated Freddie Draper’s 72nd-minute goal, securing a point for the Royals in a tightly contested match against Lincoln City.

The crowd was vocal from the start, encouraging their teams in the opening moments of the tense match. The visitors challenged the Royals’ defence with threatening crosses into the box, but the defensive line remained calm.

Sam Smith latched onto a through pass, cut it back to Ben Elliott, but the Cameroonian could only send his shot slightly above the goal, to the approval of the Reading fans.

The Royals executed some fluid play in the beginning stages. Lewis Wing and Harvey Knibbs carved out space in the midfield, seeking to dismantle

the Imps’ defence. Smith and Paul Mukairu appeared dynamic on the left, their incisive runs marking the 20th minute.

Knibbs’ persistent pressure wreaked havoc in Lincoln City’s penalty area.

His slide kept the ball in play, setting up Femi Azeez, whose attempt was immediately blocked by Lukas Jensen. The ball drifted across the goal, and Mukairu attempted to prod it in but was thwarted.

An elaborate build-up on the right almost put Reading ahead. Azeez displayed skill to outmaneuver his marker and passed to Knibbs, whose shot soared over the goal.

A combative first half ended without a score, with Lincoln City at times looking to disrupt the Royals, who remained resolute and continued their efforts to penetrate the visitors’ defence.

Jack Moylan’s deep cross nearly re-

sulted in a goal for Lincoln City early in the second half, but Joel Pereira was attentive and cleared the danger.

Elliott’s dynamic run led to a chance for the Royals. He found Knibbs, who cut the ball back to a poised Smith, but Jensen quickly gathered the ball, staying down briefly after the encounter.

As the game approached the 60-minute mark, both teams struggled to score, hinting at a need for a moment of brilliance to resolve the standoff.

Smith skilfully flicked on Amadou Mbengue’s long pass to Azeez, whose powerful shot missed the target.

Lincoln City took the lead just past the 70-minute mark through substitute Freddie Draper, who connected with Sean Roughan’s cross with a forceful header, outdoing Pereira.

Six hacks to beat the menopause and combat middle aged spread

I

f you're approaching or experiencing menopause, self-care has never been more essential. Whilst there's no one size fits all solution, here are some habits that can help you thrive during midlife and beyond.

1. MAKE RESISTANCE TRAINING A PRIORITY As oestrogen declines, we are at risk of muscle wastage, higher injury risk and metabolism sliding. Strength training can help bulletproof our bodies and prevent many age related conditions such as back pain, hip fractures and osteoporosis. If you’re not ready to hit the weights area solo, try a strength based circuit class, yoga or a suspension trainer.

2. GET YOUR ZZZZZZs IN One of the most important ways to exercise self-care in menopause is to make sure you are having as much sleep as possible. Sleep is your most powerful weapon in self care and prioritising shut eye will make the rollercoaster of changes far easier to deal with. With our busy lives, this is often easier said than done but start by bringing forward your bedtime fractionally each night, by improving your pre-bed sleep routine, making more optimal food choices and reducing caffeine and limiting alcohol 3. THINK TWICE BEFORE HAPPY HOUR We all know that alcohol and health don’t go hand in hand and whilst the occasional glass is ok, for women suffering moderate to severe menopausal

symptoms alcohol will play havoc on your system. Sleep, midsection weight gain, depression and brain fog are all worsened by alcohol. Think twice before indulging or find a zero alcohol replacement to start a new habit.

4. THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SUPPORT The drop in oestrogen can considerably reduce connective tissue. This means breasts can appear less perky but more importantly, the loss of said connective tissue means you lose your body’s natural bra. Without that crucial support the shoulders start to round, women begin to look hunched and you increase the likelihood of back pain.

If you are an active woman (or even if you’re not) Invest in a good support that matches your level of activity. Spending a little more to help your body will be a great investment long term. Additionally, resistance training can go a long way in helping strengthen the muscles in the back that are needed to maintain good posture.

5. EAT TO COMBAT MENOPAUSE BELLY Fat distribution is largely down to genetics, lifestyle and hormones. Some women are lucky enough to have great fat distribution until menopause. However, the most common complaint I hear from mid life women is concerning new found belly fat. Eating at regular intervals and adopting a nutrient dense fibre rich diet can help regulate blood sugar and keep weight gain in check. You may have got away with a less optimal diet previously but Menopause is often the time less optimal habits catch up with you.

6. BE KIND TO YOURSELF Some women sail through menopause. However, the majority of women suffer moderate to severe symptoms.

It is no coincidence that mental health issues statistically peak for women at age 51, the average age we experience menopause. Now is the time to start prioritising you and making time for your health. Many of us have spent

Énergie Fitness promotes female empowerment

L

ast month Énergie Fitness in Wokingham hosted a celebration of female empowerment as part of their International Women’s Day celebrations.

The fundraising event had all proceeds going to @wellbeingofwomen who fund vital research to save and change the lives of women, babies and girls.

During the day there was an open gym with visitors invited along to try Énergie and support the cause.

There was a Learn to Lift special with three instructors and a chance to smash your PB and the chance to get your dose of endorphins and vitamin D with a 5km run coached by @exerciseinmind.

A tranquil Sound Bath was available to help visitors feel zen and clear your mind and there were seminars to help

harness the power of your mind and train around your cycle.

A spokesman said: “A huge thank you to all the amazing women who joined us for our International Women’s Day event. The energy and strength was truly inspiring. We hope you enjoyed all the activities and thank everyone who helped us raise money – your generosity is truly appreciated.”

Get on your bikes to book for Wokingham Bikeathon

W

okingham Bikeathon is back this summer and booking is now open.

The event takes place on June 23rd and four routes are available from 15 miles to 51 miles, so you can pick the challenge that suits you best.

Wokingham Bikeathon is a not-forprofit organisation run by volunteers and supported by local businesses, charities and organisations. Run by a small committee headed up by Stan Hetherington, the event first ran in 2008 with just 143 riders and has gone from strength to strength attracting entry numbers nearing a thousand over recent years.

The Bikeathon was originally set up to encourage people to get out on their bikes, enjoy the local area and visit Wokingham. It has, however, also become a successful vehicle to help people fundraise for charities of their choice.

Riders are under no obligation to fund raise, but if they choose to do so they can collect sponsorship for any good cause of their choice. Participants have ridden to raise money for numerous national and local charities including MacMillan, Bloodwise, Alexander Devine Hospice and The Ollie Young Foundation to name just a few.

This year there are four route options:

SHORT ROUTE – 15 miles A lovely loop north of Wokingham taking in some quiet lanes and beautiful countryside – perfect for families and those new to cycling.

MEDIUM ROUTE – 25 miles The medium route was a new addition to the 2022 Bikeathon and is perfect for those who want a stepping stone up from the short route but aren’t quite ready for the long (35 mile) route.

LONG ROUTE – 35 miles The popular long route from 2019 is back and unchanged. This route is ideal for people who have been building up their cycling distance and want to go out and do a longer route as part of an organised and fully signed event.

EXTRA LONG ROUTE – 51 miles This route has been introduced this year as a result of recent requests.

Every year, the money from entries is recycled back into next year’s event. If any money is left over after all the bills have been paid, the Committee is always pleased to donate to a variety of charities, especially those like The Wokingham Lions Club and ARC Counselling who have helped on the day.

School recognised for exceptional performance

vendons Primary School has received two letters of commendation from Rt Hon Damian Hinds MP, Minister for Schools, for its outstanding academic performance during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The first letter commends the Year 1 pupils’ exceptional results in the 20222023 Phonics Screening Check, laying a strong foundation for their literacy skills. The second letter applauds the Year 4 pupils’ success in mastering the multiplication tables check, a crucial building block for mathematical development, which lands the school in the top 200 in England.

The school takes immense pride in this praise, and attributes its success to a combination of factors including their dedicated staff, hardworking pupils, and the implementation of enjoyable learning techniques such as tak-

ing part in the annual Top of the Rocks competition, which prepares the pupils for the national multiplications check.

Walking back to happiness with ‘the beautiful game’

oodley Pensioners FC is a dedicated FA-affiliated and FA-accredited walking football club operating in the Wokingham and district area, working closely with Wokingham Borough Council’s sports and leisure team.

They are an all-inclusive club welcoming men and women of all standards, from those who just want a friendly kick around to those who would like to play at a more competitive level. No previous experience of football is necessary. ​Walking football is a slow-paced version of the beautiful game and is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle as well as getting those who used to play the game back on the pitch.

Focus is very much on promoting the mental health and the physical well-being of all our members both on the football pitch and socially.

They run three friendly club sessions as follows: l Monday 11am to 12 noon outdoors on the 3G pitch at Cantley Park, Twyford Road, Wokingham RG40 5QG. l Wednesday 8pm to 9pm outdoors on the 3G pitch at Farley Hill Primary School, Baston Road, Arborfield Green, Reading RG2 9ZW. l Friday 11am to 12 noon outdoors on the 3G pitch at Cantley Park, Twyford Road, Wokingham RG40 5QG. ​ Monday and Friday sessions cost £4 on an attendance basis and the

Membership is open to all who are interested in playing walking football at a cost of £5 per year, payable after the free taster sessions. This provides adequate Public Liability and Personal Accident cover to members, and to allow the purchase of small items such as balls and bibs.

Walking football should not be confused with the regular 11v11 or five/ six-a-side versions of the game.

Woodley Pensioners FC has a strong social side, encouraging members to interact through activities such as coffee mornings/afternoons, lunches in local hostelries and participation

in charity tournaments.

T

he concluding weekend of the hockey season was a whirlwind of emotion and action for South Berkshire, featuring three teams vying for promotion and one battling to avoid relegation.

In a thrilling finale, the Ladies 4th team clinched their division title by just one point over Reading, thanks to a decisive victory against Scarlet Runners.

Mirroring this success, the Ladies 5th team secured their championship by the same narrow margin, dominating Amersham 5-0 away, edging out Wycombe for the top spot.

Not to be outdone, the Men’s 6th team achieved a remarkable feat, securing a league title hat-trick with a 5-3 home victory over Newbury, finishing just one point ahead of Slough.

Demonstrating resilience, the Ladies 3rd team narrowly escaped relegation with a crucial 1-0 win at Amersham, ensuring their survival in the league by a single point.

The Men’s 1st team ended their

season on a high note, drawing 3-3 at Bournemouth. This result extended their unbeaten streak to five games, culminating in a 10th place finish.

Meanwhile, the Men’s 2nd team’s 1-1 home draw against Windsor saw them conclude the season in 8th place, while the Men’s 3rd team’s impressive 6-3 victory over Maidenhead secured them 3rd place.

The Men’s 4th team also enjoyed success with a commanding 6-1 win over Windsor, finishing the season in third position, and the Men’s 5th team’s 5-1 triumph over Maidenhead placed them in 8th.

Ladies 1st team, with their 11th draw of the season, a 2-2 result at Haslemere, landed in 4th place in their league.

The only setback of the weekend was the Ladies 2nd team’s defeat to a formidable Reading side, 8-0. However, having secured their league position earlier in the season, this loss did not impact their final standing, which was 10th.

T

he Bowmen of Burleigh Archery Club welcomes archers of various skill levels and accommodates a wide range of bow types. The club offers shooting sessions throughout the year for enthusiasts of compound, recurve, and longbow archery.

It is primarily focused on Target Archery and does not support Field Archery or the use of crossbows.

Within the club, there is a vibrant junior section with approximately 25 members, whose ages range from 10 to 18 years. The majority of these young archers practice with the Olympic Re-

curve bow, although a select few opt for compound and longbow archery.

To ensure the junior archers receive ample practice time, the club dedicates Monday nights during the Outdoor Season (April to October) exclusively to them, though they are also encouraged to shoot alongside the adult members.

okingham & Emmbrook FC has appointed the former Woodley United, Finchampstead and Chalvey Sports boss Darren Purbrick as its first team manager.

He succeeds Matt Cronan who was in charge of the Lowther Road club since September 2022. He recently revealed his intention to leave the club at the end of the season to take up a role overseas.

With 10 league games left, and the club sitting bottom of the Combined Counties Premier Division North, the club felt it was the right time to make the change.

Mark Ashwell, president of the club, said: “I’d like to thank Matt for his dedication and professionalism during his time with us, and we all wish him well in his future endeavours.”

He is no stranger to Lowther Road, having jointly guided the club’s under-18s to third place, and a cup final, in the 2022/23 Allied Counties Youth League. Speaking to club media, Purbrick spoke of his determination as he takes over on the touchline. He said: “I’ve been at the club for a good amount of time now, and have become part of the amazing Sumas family.

“We have to get straight to work, and we will be putting all our effort into our remaining games.”

Purbrick will be joined by former first team manager and Wokingham Town player Matt Eggleston in the dugout, alongside Jamie Shepherd and Oscar Crowley who will remain in the coaching set-up.

I

t was a bad day at the office for Mark Ashwell’s Wokingham and Emmbrook side on Bank Holiday Monday. The visiting team, Milton from Oxfordshire, dominated the entire game. In the first half, Milton’s team scored three goals, leaving the impression that Wokingham and Emmbrook were suffering from the Bank Holiday blues.

Rain over the past two weeks resulted in a waterlogged pitch at Wokingham, preventing any football from being played. There was a significant opportunity to clinch points on Monday, but unfortunately, it was not to be.

Wokingham and Emmbrook still have several postponed matches to complete before the season concludes.

Let’s hope that in their next game against Burnham, the team will ignite their passion and secure a victory in their upcoming home match
