How to Navigate the Top 3 Challenges of Energy & Infrastructure Development Projects in PA RONALD J. REYBITZ, AUTHOR, FITZPATRICK LENTZ & BUBBA

Both infrastructure and energy are buzzworthy topics in the Commonwealth. Last year, Governor Josh Shapiro launched a $400M PA SITES (Pennsylvania Strategic Investments to Enhance Sites) Grant Program, inviting infrastructure, utility, and other improvements to the Commonwealth. More recently, the governor’s “Lightning Plan” seeks to attract private-sector investments with tax incentives and permitting improvements. If you are a developer or investor looking to be part of these efforts, here are some obstacles your energy or infrastructure project may face and how to navigate them successfully.

Challenge #1: Zoning & Land Use

Pennsylvania has over 2,500 municipalities, and in the Valley, we have 62. This means each of these governing bodies has its own zoning and land development ordinances, as well as a unique appetite for land use. Gaining approval for your project will require the ability to: •

Evaluate the current state of land use regulations as it relates to a particular project

•

Prepare zoning relief applications and/or zoning amendments

•

Appear before local planning and zoning boards

•

Review and negotiate documents associated with project approvals

Coordination with, and understanding the concerns of, the local municipal officials is a vital aspect of obtaining approval.

Additionally, you may face opposition at public zoning hearings. Often, objections allege public safety or environmental concerns, so you need to be prepared to address concerns. Should your zoning permit require a hearing, you may benefit from representation by a zoning attorney.

Together with a team of legal, environmental and engineering professionals, you can achieve zoning and related municipal approvals.

Challenge #2: Permitting & Interconnections

In addition to local zoning permits, energy and infrastructure projects require approval from state and possibly federal authorities before construction can begin.

Under Governor Shapiro's "Lightning Plan," the proposed Pennsylvania Reliable Energy Siting and Electric Transition (RESET) Board should expedite energy projects at the state level. However, obtaining state permits (such as NPDES permits and highway occupancy permits) still requires approval from state agencies.

If your project involves large-scale generation or the transmission (as opposed to distribution) of electricity or gas, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), an independent federal agency, may have jurisdiction over some aspects of the project.

Another hurdle to jump over for certain projects is the interconnection process and, ultimately, an interconnection agreement. An interconnection agreement is a contract between the generation owner and the local utility for projects that connect to either the electric transmission or distribution system, and it addresses operational terms and cost responsibilities. The interconnection process involves an analysis of the project on the existing electric system. Large projects impacting the transmission system require approval from the regional grid operator (in Pennsylvania, PJM Interconnection) and involve feasibility, system impact, and facility design studies, often taking several years for approval.

Challenge #3: Financing & Tax Opportunities Does your project qualify for a grant or tax incentives?

The PA SITES funding is offering planning grants for feasibility studies, up to $250,000 per project, and construction grants and loans to serve as gap financing and help reduce development risk associated with project timelines and unknown costs. Applications will be evaluated based on need, marketability, community need, job creation and more and must be submitted through the PA Grants website.

As part of the “Lightning Plan,” your project may qualify for an EDGE Tax Credit, which includes a myriad of incentives and credits for reliable energy, clean hydrogen and more.

If you're seeking financing for your project, be prepared to perform due diligence, review complex financing arrangements and legal documents, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Partnering with an experienced attorney may allow you to mitigate potential legal issues and facilitate a more successful funding process.

For the Good of All: Are you Optimizing your Charitable Bequests in your Estate Plan?

JUDITH HARRIS, NORRIS MCLAUGHLIN | P.A. ATTORNEYS AT LAW Leaving bequests at your death to charitable causes that are important to you is an option not limited to the ultra-wealthy. Many people, regardless of their level of wealth, prefer to direct assets to charitable causes meaningful to them through their wills, certain kinds of trusts, or qualified retirement plans or IRAs at their deaths rather than during their lives. Making charitable gifts at your death has the obvious benefit of allowing you full use and enjoyment of your assets during your life. Current federal and state laws offer various options to accomplish this, with favorable tax benefits.

A savvy estate planning and tax attorney will help you evaluate the best options for you, given your personal objectives and tax consequences, and carefully consider the scope and kinds of assets you own. Each planning situation is unique and deserves special consideration.

Strategies other than current cash gifts to desired charities allow you to make current or deferred gifts during your life. Examples include gifts of appreciated stock, charitable gift annuities, donoradvised funds, certain trusts such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable annuity trusts, and the creation and funding of a private 10

foundation. Though not the focus of this article, these are important options deserving consideration.

As with any bequest or other gift to a charitable organization, your attorney should confirm that the organization is, in fact, recognized as tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations.

The most obvious vehicle by which to fulfill your charitable wishes at death is through your will, in the form of a bequest of a specific dollar value or a percentage of your residuary estate (that is, your estate after all applicable taxes and expenses are paid). Either kind of bequest will generate a charitable Pennsylvania Inheritance Tax deduction and Federal Estate Tax deduction in the amount of the date of death fair market value of the bequest. Including charitable bequests in your will would appear to be the simplest and most effective option. But is it?

The following are recommendations that deserve your careful consideration before you include a charitable bequest in your estate plan.

1) Consider using your Qualified Retirement Plan or IRA to fulfill your charitable wishes at your death.

Too often, using your qualified retirement plan (for example, 401(k), 403(b), or other employer-sponsored plan) or your IRA is overlooked as an efficient and tax-savvy manner of giving to charity at your death. Naming the charity as a beneficiary of a portion of your retirement plan will, in addition to providing your estate with a deduction for PA Inheritance Tax and Federal Estate Tax purposes, maximize the amount passing to that charity because charitable organizations that are recognized as Tax Exempt by IRS and the PA Bureau of Charitable Organizations—unlike any individuals you name as beneficiaries of such retirement plans--will pay no Federal or PA income tax on such inherited plans.

In addition, bequests to charities through beneficiary designations of your retirement plan are highly efficient. They can be completed relatively quickly after your death, without the involvement of your estate and the probate process. Your charitable bequest will not necessitate review by the Charitable Trusts and Organizations Office (CTTO) of the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

2) Remember to include any restrictions on using your bequest by the charity.

Discuss with your attorney any specific wishes you have as to how your bequest will be used. If the bequest does not include such restrictions, the organization may use the gift as it desires for its general purposes.

3) Understand the legal process and timeline that will be required for any charitable bequests made through your will or a trust after your death.

Many, if not most, charitable bequests made through your will or trust will require your estate and trust attorney to notify the CTTO of the Attorney General of such bequests. Bequests of a specific dollar amount will require less documentation and legal work to be provided to the CTTO than will a gift of a percentage of your residuary estate. The latter will require the submission of detailed financial information for review by the Attorney General before allowing distribution of the bequests to any beneficiaries.

Mom Was Right: Choose Your Words Wisely STEPHANIE A. KOCHER, DICKIE MCCAMEY & CHILCOTE

First, the disclaimer: I am no grammarian. However, I am a lawyer who spends a significant portion of my day in Microsoft Word. So, grammar is an essential part of my livelihood.

I presume no need to lecture on the difference between “your” and “you’re.” If you are reading this article, odds are you understand basic grammar. However, grammar extends well beyond these basic principles. While we might not remember the nuances of verb tenses and punctuation learned in high school, those principles (and their application) could have a lasting effect on your life—or someone else’s.

In January of this year, the United States Supreme Court heard an oral argument in Hewitt v. United States of America, 23-1002. The petitioner in this case is Tony Hewitt, a criminal defendant convicted of conspiracy and bank robbery, among other crimes. Mr. Hewitt was convicted of his crimes and sentenced before enacting the 2018 legislation, the First Step Act. However, his sentence was vacated, and a Judge ordered him to be resentenced. When it came to his resentencing, Mr. Hewitt argued that the First Step Act should apply in his case, giving him the benefit of a reduction in sentencing.

The question before the Court was whether the sentencing reduction provisions of the First Step Act applied to those who had a sentence imposed but later vacated and were later resentenced after the Act was enacted. The First Step Act was a bipartisan attempt to promote rehabilitation for federal prisoners and lower rates of recidivism. Pursuant to the statute, the Act applies to 16

offenses if “a sentence for the offense has not been imposed as of such date of enactment.”

Counsel for Mr. Hewitt argued that based on the statute's language, those whose sentences were vacated and resentenced after enactment could reap the benefits of the Act. Mr. Hewitt argued that in drafting the statute, the legislature used the present perfect tense, “has not been," with the preposition "as of," which "connotes an ongoing condition." He argued that if Congress wanted those who had sentences imposed and later vacated to not reap the benefits, they would have used the past tense and a different preposition.

The opposition is that the statute's real meaning hinges on using the indefinite article "a ."In this case, the argument is that “a sentence” means a sentence that is imposed and ongoing, as well as a sentence imposed and later vacated. Under this interpretation, if an individual had a sentence imposed, they were not eligible to reap the benefits of the First Step Act, even if that sentence was vacated.

Many of us may not know the difference between past perfect, present perfect, or future perfect verb tenses or what an “indefinite article” is. Undoubtedly, Congress didn’t think about these principles at the time they enacted the First Step Act. But Congress’s word choice and grammar usage have led to hundreds of hours of research and writing time, many thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees, and (undoubtedly) ongoing stress for those criminal defendants whose future and freedom hinge on the outcome of this argument.

Taking the time to understand verb tenses, punctuation, and principles of grammar could save you, your company, or your client thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of time and stress. It could mean the difference between five years in prison or fifteen years.

It’s not just verb tenses that can have this effect. One comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence. Compare: “Let’s eat friends,” with “Let’s eat, friends.”

Word choice can be just as important as verb tense or punctuation.

For many, the words "will" and "shall" mean the same. However, in the legal community, there is debate over the subtle differences between "shall" and "will" and when each is appropriate. It is understood to many that "shall" implies an obligation, whereas “will” expresses a condition.

While grammatical errors will occur from time to time, we can and should limit the number and scope of those errors. One way to limit those errors is to brush up on verb tenses and punctuation.

And, when you are dealing with matters of consequence, always remember to choose your words wisely.

MAHA, RFK, and What It Could Mean for Your Health YULIYA SEMENOVYCH, ELIXIR HEALTH AND WELLNESS MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) is at the top of everyone’s minds - and if it isn’t, it probably should be.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was recently confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). He has placed a huge emphasis on fighting the nation’s growing health crisis, specifically chronic diseases and environmental toxins.

The Link Between Environmental Toxins and Chronic Disease Kennedy has always been vocal about the effects of environmental toxins on public health. In his inaugural address at HHS, he emphasized his commitment to "combat the chronic disease epidemic in America."

He has consistently linked the surge in chronic illnesses to environmental pollutants. In a speech at the Nixon Library, Kennedy said, "We know what’s causing it. It has to be an environmental toxin.

Genes don’t cause epidemics."

Kennedy's concerns include "pesticides, antidepressants, and electromagnetic waves," which he plans to investigate for possible links to chronic illnesses. He has voiced his intention to identify and mitigate their potential contributions to diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Movement The MAHA movement, spearheaded by Kennedy, is an initiative targeting the root causes of America's health challenges. During his confirmation hearing, he described the movement's significance as "one of the most powerful and transcendent movements" he has encountered.

A cornerstone of MAHA is promoting transparency within the food and pharmaceutical industries. Kennedy advocates for clear labeling and eliminating harmful substances from consumer products.

He has criticized ultra-processed foods, particularly in school programs, and has called for educational reforms to prioritize healthier options. Kennedy has also expressed concerns about the widespread use of certain pharmaceuticals, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). He has questioned their safety and potential over prescription. In his view, addressing the root causes of mental health issues is preferable to reliance on medications, and he has initiated efforts to reevaluate current medical practices.

Why I Support the MAHA Movement Firstly, let me clarify something for those who do not know me: I support issues, not candidates, and this is not my endorsement of any party or person. Now, onto the fun part…

Kennedy's approach is controversial because of this stance on other topics like vaccination and oversimplifying health, but there is enormous value in bringing all of this to the forefront.

Environmental factors have been scientifically proven to shift epigenetics and be the root causes of symptoms that, when mistreated, turn to diseases. Because of this, one of the foundational offerings at Elixir Health and Wellness is a Health Optimization program that tests things like heavy metal toxicity, vitamin deficiencies, gut imbalance, and absorption issues. We also go through an in-depth health habit questionnaire. We test all this and start making changes to your environment before making recommendations.

An environmental "toxin" most people don't think about is their sleep environment. Sleep is the most important thing you can improve for weight loss, immunity, and overall health. Sleeping pills act as a numbing agent for the brain and, for the majority of people, negatively affect sleep quality and recovery.

GLP-1 is another hot topic that is tied to MAHA's pharmaceutical transparency piece. Many practitioners who prescribe and administer these do not discuss the side effects with their clients in-depth, do not help clients make the necessary habit changes to make their weight loss sustainable, nor make a holistic plan for how to wean off the medication.

On the note of transparency, did you know that the same food brands on our supermarket shelves have completely different ingredients overseas? The same cereal you feed your child with Red-40, Blue-1, and Yellow 5 used to create colors kids are drawn to in food, have beets, blueberries, and sweet potatoes for those same colors in other countries. The additives, colors, and preservatives in most packaged food destroy our gut bacteria and immunity.

Because of how the medical system is designed, doctors have very little time to interact with patients, and the priority is relieving symptoms instead of getting to the root cause of the problem. The MAHA Movement gives me hope that more people will be able to understand how to prevent or even reverse certain conditions by having toxins removed from their food sources.

Even with having access to tech and supplements that give me unlimited energy, I would prefer to live in a country where I don’t have to read every label. As these initiatives unfold, their impact will be closely monitored, potentially setting new precedents in the pursuit of a healthier America.

What does quality really mean in health care? From the perspective of Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), now proudly part of Jefferson Health, quality means providing the care you need to achieve and maintain optimal health, and when you are sick or injured, providing the best possible health care experience. You receive health care value by being kept healthy and helping to avoid chronic diseases that are costly to treat. This overarching goal is at the heart of what Jennifer Stephens, DO, does every day.

Taking on two challenges A longtime primary care practitioner and Chief Medical Officer with Lehigh Valley Physician Group, Dr. Stephens recently stepped into the role of Chief Medical Officer, Ambulatory Quality and Population Health, with Jefferson Health. Her title describes her two categories of responsibility.

"Ambulatory quality involves care in outpatient settings. This is an opportunity to help individual people become healthier," Dr. Stephens says, noting that across the United States, 73 percent of people are obese or overweight, and over half are diabetic or pre-diabetic. "We reach out to those not seeking care and find ways to bring them in."

This is part of the process of improving health. The more a person participates in preventive care – seeing a clinician when needed, getting routine health screenings, and taking care of themselves – the better their chance of staying healthy.

“Population health is where we look through a 50,000-foot lens and ask, ‘How do we take better care of our community?’” she says.

“Ambulatory quality care and population health dovetail together, sort of like peanut butter and jelly. One affects the other.”

A natural administrator Dr. Stephens spent her youngest years in Pennsylvania and “grew up around medicine.” Her mother and grandmother were nurses, her sister is a pharmacist and many family friends were physicians. “I was a candy striper and then an EMT in college,” she says. “We would drop off the patient at the emergency department, but I always wanted to know what came after. I wanted to know how they were helped.”

Throughout her education and career, Dr. Stephens held administrative roles in addition to clinical practice. Greatly influenced by Donald

Berwick, MD, a professor at Harvard School of Public Health who founded the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), she took a turn toward healthcare quality.

"He taught me that we can learn how to continuously improve and direct a career toward improving patient health care," Dr. Stephens says.

Consequently, she dove deeper. Dr. Stephens earned an IHI Open School Quality Improvement Certificate (2012), Certificates of Achievement in the Physician Leadership Program through the VHA Mid-Atlantic/Jefferson School of Population Health (2014) and the Jefferson School of Population Health Academy Certificate Program (2015), and a Master of Business Administration from DeSales University (2021). These credentials further extended her long list of medical certifications, administrative appointments, awards and honors, board memberships, teaching experiences, and journal publications.

One recent award was the Lehigh Valley Women of Influence from Lehigh Valley Business, which she received in 2024, along with two other LVHN colleagues.

LVHN and Jefferson together Now that LVHN and Jefferson are one organization, Dr. Stephens has found a productive and satisfying niche. There was always a shared purpose between the organizations, and increased quality and value continue to be fundamental. To ensure universal understanding, clinicians, staff and administrators have participated in retreats, where each part of the organization learns from the other.

“The back and forth is what’s so exciting,” Dr. Stephens says. “They ask how we do this, and we ask how they do that. It’s like bringing two puzzle pieces together.”

Dr. Stephens points out that, underlying their compatible vision for quality, value, and population health, Jefferson and LVHN have a singular focus: to keep everyone healthy and thriving.

“Our combination with Jefferson gives us opportunities we never would have had,” she says. “We can now leverage additional resources, skills, and health care professionals to help people in our communities live better lives.”

Many assume prenatal massage is a luxury, but it’s actually one of the most effective ways to support a healthy pregnancy. It improves maternal comfort and safety while fostering the baby's development and growth. Research shows that babies born to mothers with lower stress levels tend to have better overall development, and prenatal massage plays a key role in reducing stress, improving circulation, and minimizing the risk of pregnancy complications and injuries. By enhancing both the physical and emotional well-being, prenatal massage helps mothers feel their best while creating the ideal environment for their babies.

As a massage therapist practicing since 2008, I have worked with many pregnant clients and have seen firsthand how much relief and comfort regular massage can provide.

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also brings many physical and emotional changes. Many pregnant women experience symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, stress, mood swings, aches, pains, and joint laxity, which can make them more vulnerable to injury. Other common concerns include belly sprains, swelling, low energy, fatigue, headaches, and brain fog. All of these challenges can make it difficult to feel comfortable and at ease in your body.

Fortunately, massage therapy can help alleviate these symptoms by improving circulation, reducing stress hormones, and promoting relaxation. Prenatal massage can be an essential part of your care plan, especially as your body releases the hormone relaxin, which helps loosen ligaments and joints to accommodate extra weight and shifting alignment.

One of the key benefits of prenatal massage is helping the body adjust to postural changes. As pregnancy progresses, the extra weight pulls the lower back forward, causing an anterior pelvic tilt that places stress on the hips, knees, and ankles. The added strain can contribute to lower back pain, sciatic discomfort, and overall tension in the body. Massage helps to release muscle tightness, allowing for better posture and improved mobility.

Massage can also be extremely beneficial for reducing swelling or edema, which is common during pregnancy. By encouraging better circulation and lymphatic drainage, prenatal massage can help reduce fluid retention, especially in the legs and feet.

Another key benefit is the impact on mental health. Pregnancy hormones can cause mood swings, anxiety, and increased stress levels. Regular massage can help balance stress hormones by lowering cortisol while boosting serotonin and dopamine, which improve mood and promote relaxation.

Traditionally, many massage therapists have their pregnant clients lie on their side during sessions, which is how I was originally trained.

Side-lying can be a great option, but many clients feel it doesn't allow for complete relaxation, especially in later pregnancy.

Now, thanks to specialized pregnancy pillows, it is possible for pregnant clients to lie face down safely and comfortably—even up to 40 weeks. These pillows are designed to provide full support for the belly and chest, taking pressure off the lower back and allowing for a deeper relaxation, and more effective massage. I have had many clients tell me that being able to lie face down for the first time in months is one of the most relaxing and relieving aspects of their massage.

A common question I hear is: "How often should I get a prenatal massage?" My recommendation is at least once a month. Some clients come every two weeks, and as the due date gets closer, weekly sessions can be extremely helpful in preparing the body for labor.

The less tension and stress you carry in your muscles, the better your pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery will be. A relaxed body means better sleep, improved circulation, reduced discomfort, and even a smoother labor process.

Each session should ideally last one hour. Shorter sessions can still be beneficial, but an hour gives enough time to address multiple areas and provide full relaxation.

Beyond massage therapy, another tool I love to use for my pregnant clients is Kinesiotaping (KT Taping). This technique involves applying a flexible, therapeutic tape to areas of strain, such as the belly and lower back.

Taping the belly helps support the extra weight and encourages better posture.

Taping the lower back can provide additional relief by reducing muscle strain and supporting the spine.

Many of my clients find that KT taping helps them feel more supported throughout the day, and it can be a great complement to prenatal massage.

As a therapist, helping people feel better is my passion. I take a customized approach to every session, ensuring that my clients get the most out of their time on the table. I have worked with many women throughout their pregnancies, and it is always amazing to hear how massage has improved their comfort, sleep, and overall well-being.

Pregnancy is a unique experience for every woman, and no two bodies are the same. That’s why I listen carefully to each client’s needs and adjust my techniques to provide the most effective care.

Whether you are dealing with sciatic pain, hip discomfort, or just need some stress relief, prenatal massage can be a powerful tool to help you feel your best.

• Safe internet and email practices.

2. Strengthen Passwords & Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Use long, complex passwords and avoid reusing them across different accounts.

• Enable MFA wherever possible—this adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, like a text message code or an authentication app.

3. Keep Software & Systems Updated Cybercriminals exploit weaknesses in outdated software. Make sure your business is protected by:

5. Backup Your Data Regularly A cyberattack can wipe out essential data in seconds. Avoid total loss by:

• Employee Training & Awareness – Does your MSP offer cybersecurity training for your employees? Human error is one of the biggest risks.

• Creating automatic, regular backups of your business data.

• Storing backups in a secure, offsite location or cloud service.

• Transparent Communication & Reporting – Your MSP should provide regular reports on security incidents, updates, and improvements.

• Testing your backups to ensure they can be restored quickly.

6. Have an Incident Response Plan If a cyberattack happens, knowing what to do next can minimize damage. Create a plan that includes:

• Who to contact in case of a breach (IT support, legal, customers if needed).

• Steps to contain the threat and prevent further damage.

• A process for reviewing and improving security measures afterward.

The Power of Values to Navigate Uncertainty Last month, I sat in a room with a group of executive leaders, and the mood was heavy. In addition to managing benefits, operations, and supply chains, they were fielding tough conversations about layoffs, navigating growing tensions around diversity, equity, and inclusion, and trying to ease the stress of economic uncertainty.

While each organization’s purpose and culture represented in this discussion were unique, a common theme emerged. Leaders across nearly every organization were leaning into their organizational values to address the uncertainty weighing on employees.

When done right, values are more than a poster in the breakroom or a section on the company website. They act as a unifying force by providing a shared language that helps people make decisions, connect across differences, and find clarity in times of change.

Values Are a Compass in Uncertain Times

When people feel unsettled, whether due to economic headwinds, social tensions, or internal restructuring, they look for stability. Employees may dig in and resist change, disengage, or seek security elsewhere. Do they reflect what your company truly prioritizes? If they feel outdated or misaligned, update them. But if they still resonate, amplify them.

2. Make Values Visible in Daily Work Employees shouldn't have to guess what your organization stands for.

Values should be present in team meetings, leadership communications, hiring practices, and performance conversations.

3. Listen to How Employees Experience Your Values Employees know when there's a gap between what an organization says its values are and what it does. Use surveys, focus groups, and even exit interviews to ask, Do you see our values reflected in your day-to-day work?

Use the response rate as a barometer for employee engagement. If your organization lacks trust, you see a low response rate and limited responses to optional questions. In a high-trust environment, employees will be eager to share what is working and what is not.

Discover Bethlehem’s Rich History on New Moravian Church Settlements World Heritage Tour MARK DEMKO, DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR HISTORIC BETHLEHEM MUSEUM & SITES Thousands of people pass by the Central Moravian Church and the 18th-century buildings along Church Street in Bethlehem every day.

Others walk and jog along the Monocacy Creek in the city’s Colonial Industrial Quarter. Yet, not everyone is aware of the origins of the city’s beautiful and charming historic district.

Now, visitors from across the region and throughout the nation have the opportunity to discover the history of Bethlehem’s early Moravian community and its enduring impact on the United States as they embark on the new World Heritage Tour presented by Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites (HBMS). The 90-minute guided walking tour, a collaboration between Central Moravian Church and HBMS, takes place every Saturday at 2 p.m. and is led by a guide dressed in 18th-century Moravian attire.

"The City of Bethlehem and our World Heritage partners at Moravian University, Bethlehem Area Moravians, Central Moravian Church, and Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites are thrilled to invite the residents of the Lehigh Valley to explore our World Heritage site," said the City of Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds. "The World Heritage Tour celebrates our rich history, culture, and shared human heritage."

The World Heritage Tour, which focuses on an approximately twosquare-block area in Bethlehem where the Moravians established their settlement in the 1740s, allows attendees to go inside the 1741 Gemeinhaus, 1751 Old Chapel and 1803-1806 Central Moravian Church Sanctuary (based on availability), three of the buildings that are included in Moravian Church Settlements–Bethlehem, the newest World Heritage site in the United States. In addition, they will see all of the other buildings and sites included in the approximately 10-acre World Heritage site, the 26th in the nation.

World Heritage Tours, which begin at the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem, 66 W. Church St., Bethlehem, are led by an HBMS docent dressed in period attire and specifically trained to share the unique characteristics and innovativeness that led the Moravians to become a community of "firsts" in our fledgling nation. During the tour, attendees will visit the 1741 Gemeinhaus, the Moravians' community house and first place of worship in Bethlehem. The 1741 Gemeinhaus has the distinction of being the oldest building in Bethlehem and the only 18th-century Moravian Gemeinhaus still in existence in the world.

Tour attendees will also visit the 1751 Old Chapel, Bethlehem's second place of worship, and Central Moravian Church, whose sanctuary was completed in 1806. Plus, they will stop in the Bell House Courtyard to see the 1746 Bell House, 1744 Single Sisters’ House, and 1768 Widows' House, as well as visit God's Acre, the cemetery that was the final resting place for Bethlehem-area Moravians from 1742-1911.

“Central Moravian Church is thrilled to be a part of the living heritage of the Moravian Church Settlements-Bethlehem World Heritage designation as we actively worship and practice our Moravian faith in the 21st century,” said Rev. Janel Rice, Senior Pastor at Central Moravian Church. “These buildings represent a historic and living church that recognizes the 18th-century call to build community and 32

treat each other with love and respect, which is as necessary today as it was for our Moravian ancestors."

The World Heritage Tour concludes on Bethlehem's Main Street with a look at the 1748 Second Single Brethren's House and the Colonial Industrial Quarter's 1761 Tannery and 1762 Waterworks, the first pumped municipal water system in the country. Considered to be the United States’ first industrial park, the Colonial Industrial Quarter was a thriving community of approximately 35 crafts, trades, and industries during its height in the mid-1700s.

The World Heritage Tour offered by Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites and Central Moravian Church is the only guided tour that covers all the properties and sites included in the Moravian Church Settlements–Bethlehem World Heritage site. In addition to the World Heritage Tour, all attendees receive free admission and a guided tour of the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem.

Inscribed on the World Heritage list in July 2024, Moravian Church Settlements–Bethlehem is joined with the Moravian Settlements in Christiansfeld, Denmark; Gracehill, Northern Ireland; and Herrnhut, Germany as a single World Heritage site, making it the United States’ only transnational World Heritage site. The uniting of these four locations into a single World Heritage site is designed to highlight the outstanding universal value of these well-preserved Moravian communities and the Moravian Church's influence around the globe.

The living cultural traditions of the Moravians, including their timeless values of education, equality, innovation, and spirituality, have helped shape their communities for centuries.
