Three Tips for Co-Parenting Success in Autumn (and Beyond)

When the dog days of summer have passed by, parents and kids adjust to the new rhythms of fall with the beginning of school, sports, and more! With year-end holidays following soon after, it's important for co-parents to get on the same page to ensure a harmonious season ahead. Check out these top tips for co-parenting success in autumn and beyond!

KNOW THE SCHEDULE

Perhaps you’re a family with a giant calendar in the kitchen or with a perfectly integrated and synced calendar app. However, you manage your schedules, most parents agree they get much fuller heading into September!

Typically, co-parents operate across two separate households, so finding ways to coordinate pickups, drop-offs, sports games, recitals, and school events can be very challenging! Pave the way for a prosperous season when you:

Take ownership of gaining access to important apps and portals - schools and sports teams often use apps or organizationalsanctioned portals for assignments, parent-teacher conferences, game times and more. Legally, both parents can have access to educational information, and the burden of registering is on each parent. Get the access you need so you can stay on top of important dates that fall during your custody period.

Share information when it can’t be otherwise accessed - especially smaller sports organizations may use email to manage a season, sharing information with whoever registered the child. Either ask for your co-parent to be added or be sure to forward along pertinent information they need, especially when events take place during their custody periods.

Discuss new activities before signing up - remember that with shared legal custody, you should make decisions together regarding things like signing your children up for activities. If your child participated in an activity for years prior to your separation or divorce, it doesn't necessarily need to be discussed, and both parents should be on board to share the associated responsibilities.

KNOW THE COURT ORDER

Custody orders are usually very explicit about timing, days of the week, holidays, etc. Especially if it's your first year following an order, be sure to read through it and know what days are yours and what days are your co-parents'.

Court orders typically address federal and traditional holidays. Holiday schedules precede the regular parenting plan, and coparents alternate every year. For example, one parent may have the child(ren) Christmas Eve into Christmas morning with a midday exchange. The following year, this switches. But what about events like local trick-or-treats? Or perhaps you have unique family traditions or practice a religion like Islam or Judaism and observe holidays your co-parent does not. If these are not acknowledged in the order, you may need to address this in a custody conference or speak with your attorney. Do so as much in advance of the observance as possible to allow time for the accommodation to be made.

If you don’t have a court order, you may have no clear understanding of when you’ll have your children for holidays, causing potential anxiety and an inability to plan. Having an order provides clarity and helps avoid disputes with your co-parent.

KNOW YOUR CHILDREN

Co-parenting should aim to look out for your children's interests and let them be kids, even when it means forgetting to bring home permission slips or telling you they have to stay after school for a club meeting. When you co-parent effectively and civilly, they are able to land in a space of grace, not a battlefield.

Be able to spot signs of anxiety and make them feel safe and heard as they navigate their "new normal" on special days like birthdays or their first Christmas post-separation or divorce. Empower them with coping skills that fit their personalities, enabling them to process this productively, and communicate with your ex about your children's mental health and how you can support them together.

As you "fall" into a new season, commit to showing interest in your children and respect for your co-parent. Don't let frustrations with your ex overshadow your love and pride for your kids.

GetA Life!: How Hobbies Affect Mental Health, WorkLife-Balance and Aging

The term “hobby” has a few quintessential meanings depending on the kind of person you talk to. Sometimes, hobbies are expressed through hands-on, creative means such as painting or playing music. They may also lean toward physical, sports-oriented fields such as recreational softball teams or hockey beer leagues. A hobby could even be the stereotypical coin collector looking to fill their U.S. map with all 50 states' 25¢ companions. Whether your hobby is a solo adventure or a group activity, they are paramount to your mental, emotional, and physical health.

Pennsylvania’s Shippensburg News Chronicle cited a survey by ModestFish.com that found beekeeping, “aquascaping” (decorating fish tanks), and falconry as the top 3 pastimes in PA, despite Parx Casino being right down the road. However, do note that audiences of the Modest Fish website are more likely to be animal-oriented people, which may be a reason why these eclectic hobbies rank so high.

In determining what my fellow Pennsylvanians are up to these days, I surveyed my colleagues at Norris McLaughlin, P.A. in Allentown. What are the 9-5ers are doing to stay occupied?

As expected, the results of my survey proved one thing across the board: no one at the office is beekeeping, “aquascaping,” or doing any of the other 8 “top” hobbies in PA. Fortunately, they are participating in some type of hobby. I sent out a survey for anonymous responses and received a list of diverse interests. My colleagues were all reliant on the ability to improve mental and physical health. Regardless of whether someone was writing a screenplay, gardening, in a book club, or “putzing around the yard,” they all wanted to do them to be happy and healthy.

I posed this question very carefully in my survey without giving away the intent: “If you have a hobby, what is your favorite thing about it?" Simple enough? The results were positive, noting mental release, comradery, happiness, stress relief, disconnecting from stresses, being with friends, etc. And though this was not an official survey and simply a gauge of interest in our firm, it does prove that some people lead different, creative, and eventful lives outside of the offices.

Work-life imbalance is one of the main concerns for full-time workers. It becomes especially detrimental in the winter days when the daylight seems to exist only when you’re working. A survey that studied employees in Shanghai showed a significant difference in

overall well-being and mental health when comparing people who work 60+ hours and have hobbies versus those who do not. Despite being occupied by work or sleep for nearly 2/3rds of their week, the “hobbyists” were able to mentally cope with their lives more. Granted, those working 40 or less felt better overall, but let’s not dwell too much on labor law.

As we get older, we learn to cherish the things that make us happy and continue to do them as much as we can. For me? Those hobbies are music and bodybuilding, arguably two of the greatest hobbies to have. I was a judge; I cannot be biased.

My love for music might be like that of the other 73 million people who witnessed The Beatles sing their early hits on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. I remember that whole performance as if it were "Yesterday.” I got a guitar at 10 years old and wanted to be George Harrison, and later, when Cream was the rage, Eric Clapton.

I may have chosen to be a lawyer, but after all, even our own national anthem composer, Francis Scott Key, was a lawyer. Rather than take away my time, I attribute my ties to music to my success. I still perform with a band called The Verdict and stay active in Allentown and Lehigh Valley’s art community, most recently playing at MusikFest

According to a BBC article from early 2024, playing an instrument and being able to sight-read is a positive factor for brain health later in life. Of course, listening to music has been linked with overall positive mental health, but being able to play an instrument has lasting effects on cognitive health.

My secondary hobby, bodybuilding, started as a freshman at Moravian, working out at the Body Factory. The weightlifting bug evolved into a 47-year commitment to the gym or doing some kind of workout unless I was sick or injured. I don’t need to go into detail on the benefits of physical exercise; there are countless GQ articles on kinesiology to read.

I’ve made my closest friends from the gym and through playing music. These hobbies have left an indelible, albeit positive, mark on my life. I'm at no lack of hobbies that can improve my mental and physical health. Finding that sweet spot between the two is how you can maintain a fulfilling and positive lifestyle even as you may be nearing retirement, moving to new areas, or just looking for something to do.

Custody Under Kayden’s Law: New Considerations for Pennsylvania Family Lawyers

Pennsylvania custody law hinges on one critical section: 23 Pa.C.S. §5328(a), a list of sixteen factors the decision-maker uses to determine custody arrangements. These factors range from the obvious— Which party is more likely to ensure the child’s safety— to the nuanced— The need for stability and continuity in the child’s education, family, and community life— to the outright obscure— Anyotherrelevantfactor. It is a long list, complicated further by the breadth of ground covered. These factors are, however, unified by the Best Interest of the Child (BIOC) standard.

Ultimately, a custody decision is not about which parent or guardian wants custody more. The purpose of that exhaustive list of factors is to ensure that no angle gets overlooked while determining what is best for the child or children involved. A parent who is capable of attending to the child’s emotional needs but cannot address their educational or medical needs may want very badly to have sole custody, but a decisionmaker following the factors and the BIOC standard will have to consider those factors that weigh against the parent.

Earlier this year, those factors received an extra layer of protection when Governor Shapiro signed Senate Bill 55 into law. Commonly known as “Kayden’s Law,” the legislation has several significant effects.

It requires that a court consider a broader range of criminal history of the parents— where before, judges generally considered allegations of abuse and some criminal convictions, they now must also consider additional acts such as simple assault, reckless endangerment of another, and cruelty to animals. The presence of one or more of these convictions in the parent’s history can indicate an ongoing risk of abuse to the child. Where there is an ongoing risk of abuse, there is a rebuttable presumption that the court may only grant supervised physical custody to the party who poses the risk. The expanded list of qualifying convictions (located in 23 Pa.C.S. §5329(a)) increases those parties who will now have the burden of overcoming a presumption of supervised physical custody.

In addition— and perhaps more notably— Kayden’s Law also gives certain custody factors additional weight. Kayden’s Law strengthens those factors that emphasize the safety of the child, prioritizing them over others. Now, rather than balancing all factors equally, a decision-maker must give particular consideration to these factors: which party is more likely to ensure the safety of the child; the present and past abuse committed by members of the party’s household; criminal

convictions of the parties and; violent or assaultive behavior committed by a party.

These new requirements are worthwhile assurances that custody deliberations will continue to focus on the children's best interests. It is common practice in many legal processes to give uneven weight to different factors, and custody is not the right place for lax analysis.

Still, practitioners have reservations about these additions and amendments. The objections are not to the content of these new rules; rather, practitioners are concerned about the potential applications and effects.

Consider: two parents initiate divorce and custody proceedings for their child. Dad moved out of the state last year and has not seen much of the child since then. He does not live near family and school, and his area's healthcare options are very limited. Mom stayed in the marital home with the child so the child could continue attending the same school, seeing the same doctors, and visiting with nearby family. However, Mom was convicted of simple assault five years ago. She has no other criminal history.

Mom and Dad are unsure how to divide custody, so they appear before a judge. The judge must consider Mom's assault conviction— in fact, the judge has to begin with a presumption that Mom can only have supervised custody because of that conviction. Mom can either accept that decision or work to rebut the presumption. In both cases, Mom will be suspended from seeing the child until the judge decides whether to enforce supervised custody.

Although the safety of a child should be paramount in custody considerations, Kayden’s Law creates a risk of significant, debilitating, and long-felt effects that may be difficult to mitigate. Extended parent-child separations due to minor or outdated convictions may cause children irreversible trauma. A less-equipped parent may receive more custody than they are prepared for or than is beneficial for the child. It is even unclear how the law addresses convictions from before the law took effect.

Prioritizing these safety factors cannot come at the price of disregarding other considerations, nor can it be done without nuance or case-specific deliberation. Certainly, Kayden's Law fills a critical gap in the process of custody determination, one which will protect children from previously unnoticed risks. Now that it is law, practitioners must learn how to apply it appropriately.

Personalized Healthcare: A Novel Approach to Longevity

We are at the forefront of an AI (artificial intelligence) revolution touching everything in our lives, including how we can approach aging, health, and longevity.

The one-size-fits-all, symptom-first approach to wellness is becoming obsolete. Instead, personalized health assessments are emerging as the next frontier to enhancing our well-being. By tailoring wellness programs to meet each individual's unique needs and preferences, we can finally extend our lifespan without sacrificing our utility.

What is a Personalized Health Assessment?

At Elixir Health and Wellness, we focus on the foundations of health and take a holobiont approach to wellness. Advancements in technology have made it possible to gather and analyze vast amounts of personal health data for relatively cheap, paving the way for highly customized wellness plans.

The concept of personalized health assessments is rooted in the understanding that each individual has distinct health needs influenced by factors such as our environment, genetics, lifestyle, and medical history. Traditional doctors often fail to address these individual differences, leading to treating individual symptoms, which results in suboptimal outcomes.

According to a report by McKinsey, approximately 20% of consumers in the United States seek personalized wellness products and services that use biometric data to provide recommendations. This percentage will continue to grow as people realize the ease and the long-term health benefits of personalizing their health care.

How Personalized Health Optimization Works?

Personalized health assessments can include the collection of various health metrics, including biometric data (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol levels), genetic information, metabolomic data, hormones, lifestyle factors (e.g., diet, exercise habits), gut bacteria collection, and even psychological assessments. This data is then analyzed by a trained professional (or an AI model) who will provide personalized recommendations.

The health optimization program I focus on includes an in-depth questionnaire, a finger-prick blood test, and urine and saliva samples (which can all be done in the comfort of your home).

This is all sent back to the lab, and once the results are back, we can see heavy metal toxicities and other environmental toxins like the level of plastic you've been exposed to. We can also see vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, gut imbalances, amino acid profiles, omega levels, food intolerances, and neurotransmitter data.

From there, we create a customized lifestyle change list that covers nutrition, fitness, and most importantly, a recommended supplement program that will help support the body with detox and help rebalance the imbalances of the cells. It takes 3-6 months for your body to begin to heal, during which the client will have ongoing support, and at that point, we retest and repeat.

What is the Benefit of Personalized Wellness?

When wellness programs are tailored to your individual needs, you are more likely to have the buy-in and complete the recommended program. It feels more relevant because your deficiencies are staring you in the face, leading to higher adherence and better outcomes.

Because the program is tailored to your needs, you are more likely to see the symptoms of your sick life fading quickly. Healthier individuals are generally happier and more productive, have increased energy levels, and improved cognitive function.

Finally, while personalized programs may require a higher upfront initial investment, they can lead to significant cost savings in the long run. Preventative care can stave off major health issues down the road, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of your life out of the hospital sick-care system.

You’re Ready to Start. What Now?

Finding the right professional is key. Not everyone is trained in wellness medicine. Not every person who is trained will be a good fit for you.

I use the HOMeHOPe framework in my optimization programs, and my ideal clients understand how their lifestyle choices impact their longevity and are looking to get optimized.

If this isn't you, but you want to get started on your own program, I have a wide network of clinicians and wellness practitioners I can match you with who may be a better fit.

Another important piece is to find someone who is able to also integrate with your other practitioners - your care team should be willing to work TOGETHER to get you the results you want!

The popularity of personalized medicine is also growing at the corporate level as companies begin to understand that profitability is directly related to the well-being of their employees. Johnson & Johnson's Human Performance Institute uses personalized data to create customized employee wellness plans. Similarly, IBM has integrated AI-driven health assessments into its employee wellness programs, offering personalized fitness and nutrition advice that has boosted employee engagement and health outcomes.

Personalized health assessments represent a transformative approach to wellness. As the demand for personalized wellness solutions continues to grow, it's important to become educated on what the real deal is and who may be peddling snake oil.

Massage Therapy: A Natural Approach to Headache Management and Relief

Getting a headache can take everything out of you. It can hinder your focus, ability to work, and ability to enjoy life. Headaches can come on gradually, which is more common, or suddenly, with a blow to the head or trauma. If you're like the rest of us, you want to alleviate those headaches quickly. Sometimes, medications can help if you're in a pinch and need to muscle through the day, but a lot of us don't like tak-ing medications anymore. Getting to the bottom of the issue and treating it is more beneficial than just masking the symptoms. A majority of headaches are caused by dehydration, tension, stress, lack of sleep, lack of caffeine, hormonal changes, and even food and drinks!

Migraines or migraine headaches are headaches of multiple pain levels but also include throbbing and pulsing, and sometimes you get a warning sign, also known as an aura. While there are many types of auras, they can be flashes of light or blind spots, for example. Many who suffer from these migraines need a dark, quiet room as they are usually light-sensitive and sensitive to sound.

Massage therapy, Myofascial Release (MFR), and Craniosacral Therapy (CST) are immensely helpful in situations like this, and a blacked-out and quiet massage room are added benefits. These, coupled with a skilled massage therapist with extensive experience and training in these techniques, can help diminish the frequency and intensity of your headaches and migraines. When the muscles are tense, it restricts blood flow, oxygen, hydration, protein, and nutrients to the muscles, which is everything your muscles need to be healthy. Did you know that your cranial bones are not fused and articulate? The bones come together to touch and are "sutured" together where they meet. When the muscles are tense and tight, it jams the crani-al bones together, increasing the pressure in your head. After loosening the muscles with myofascial re-lease, your skilled therapist will shift into craniosacral therapy and literally listen to the bones in your head, along with the cranial rhythm, allowing them to shift back to just articulating, which decreases the pressure in the head, alleviating or decreasing the intensity of the headache.

The more frequently someone has headaches or migraines, the more frequently they should be getting this type of massage therapy, at least initially, to get ahead of the pain and frequency and then taper down to a more preventative measure.

Mental Health and Physical Health: The Symbiotic Relationship

It should come as no surprise to anybody that the variety of systems within the human body often feed off and depend on each other to ensure the body is functioning properly. From the nervous system being tasked with communicating sensory information throughout the body to the immune system fighting off foreign germs trying to make us sick, the endless combinations of how these systems interact and work together are often easy to see and understand. Typically, these systems are referenced together to form the foundations of one’s physical health, and doctors have found numerous diseases and diagnoses that impact more than one when they inflict damage. However, beyond these systems lies another factor that often is not considered when a person's health is measured in the grand scheme of things as it is often stigmatized to discuss in-depth and can be very hard to quantify, like running a blood test or completing an x-ray. This factor is a person’s mental health, and while there is a current rise in the awareness and importance of a person’s mental health, people still undervalue the link between mental health and physical health and the symbiotic relationship they share for better or worse.

One such facet of this symbiotic relationship goes deep into what makes each of us unique from one another, our genetics. The genes each of us possess are the building blocks on which our bodies function and determine which traits, characteristics, and physical appearances we will have compared to others. Additionally, those very same genetics also help to determine whether or not we have allergies to certain substances, are more susceptible to certain illnesses, bacteria, or viruses, and can also determine our likelihood of developing specific mental health diagnoses. Just as common as it would be for a person whose family has a history of high blood pressure to develop the same condition, the same is true for a variety of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar, and schizophrenia to name a few. On top of that, research has started to show strong links between long-term physical health diagnoses, like heart disease, and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety from the various stressors associated with the necessary routine and precautions associated with physical health concerns. Other diagnoses with similar links can include depression with pain-centered medical diagnoses (headaches, migraines, etc.), ongoing stomach issues and anxiety, as well as digestive tract issues and autism.

Apart from the genetic component of this relationship, there also comes the preventable side of the symbiotic relationship. One of the

most common factors associated with the worsening of a diagnosis, medical or psychological, to the point where it crosses from one realm to the other is the low motivation and increased likelihood to not seek medical attention. Many mental health diagnoses are linked to low motivation for seeking help, whether it is a symptom of the diagnosis (depression) or because of the stigma associated with seeking assistance to help resolve some of the issues they might be experiencing. The same can be true for medical diagnoses as well, as people far too often will wait to seek medical attention for what they consider a "minor issue" without realizing the true impact it is having throughout their bodies. One such example could be back pain after an accident, as some people will try to "tough it out" and refuse medical attention for a variety of reasons (economic, social status, or embarrassment). However, if left untreated, the pain and discomfort could worsen to the point where the individual is no longer able to enjoy activities they once did because of their diminished capacity, coupled with the ongoing pain and discomfort, depression can easily set in and exacerbate the already low motivation to seek medical attention.

While many of these examples highlight some of the negative impacts of this symbiotic relationship, it is just as important to highlight the benefits of these connected factors. These benefits often center around the growth each can experience when healthy choices are made to ensure the person’s overall health. Eating healthy food and avoiding harmful stimuli, such as cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol, not only allow a person's physical health to flourish but also allow a person's mental health to flourish as the person's brain is getting the nutrients they need and avoiding the harmful chemicals within those substances that have been shown to negatively impact not only a person's brain but also their mental capacities, emotions, and social capabilities.

The examples above demonstrate just a small portion of how these portions of our health interact and depend on one another to keep our bodies functioning properly. The link between a person’s physical and mental health is still far from being completely understood, but as our knowledge of each system grows, so too does our understanding of the impact each one can have on the other and the importance of ensuring each gets the proper nutrition and focus to ensure we remain as healthy as possible.

Faith Moves Mountains and Conquers Cancer

Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute and staying active was essential to her recovery.
LORI MCFERRAN, LEHIGH VALLEY HEALTH NETWORK

Faithmaria Lauer, RN, 58, of Allentown, spent the past 22 years caring for her patients in the operating room at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Her role reversed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

When Lauer had her most recent routine mammogram, her results came back abnormal for an area in her right breast, a first for her when it came to her annual mammogram screenings.

Immediately, Lauer’s doctors scheduled a second mammogram and an ultrasound. Two weeks later, she was scheduled for a biopsy, which revealed that Lauer had stage 1 invasive duct carcinoma.

“I was devastated,” she says.

Work-family focuses on Faith.

Lauer’s care team took swift action. She underwent a lumpectomy and lymph node removal with surgical oncologist Heiwon Chung Whang, MD, with LVH Surgical Oncology–1240 Cedar Crest, part of Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.

“I have known Faith for over 20 years (she is our operating room nurse),” Dr. Chung says. “Even before her biopsy for diagnosis, she had approached me for directions, and she followed through with all the steps with full faith in our multidisciplinary approach.”

Lauer’s experience as a nurse plays into her resilience. “Her prognosis is excellent, and since Faith has seen many thousands of patients treated in the operating room, and now as a patient herself, her outlook and support for our community is much more enhanced because of her own experience,” Dr. Chung says.

“Faith is an amazing, inspirational woman,” says radiation oncologist Alyson McIntosh, MD. “I have never had a patient train for a grueling Spartan race while receiving daily radiation treatments. Her ability to maintain focus and stay motivated is incredible.”

Faith in Fitness

Before her diagnosis, Lauer set a New Year's resolution to get her weight down. By striving to reach that goal, she discovered a passion for fitness. She lost 35 pounds in a year by attending metabolic conditioning classes focused on high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Between adjusting her diet and attending exercise classes, she built her strength and respiratory fitness and lost weight.

She was eager to get back to the gym post-surgery, and the following Monday, she went to the gym – adhering to her doctor's 10-pound weight restriction.

“I followed the rules, but I was back in the gym,” says Lauer. “I felt so much better, even with everything I had gone through. I kept at it.”

Following her lumpectomy, Lauer underwent radiation therapy for two months. Throughout her treatments, she continued to prioritize exercise.

Faith moves forward

Staying active helped motivate Lauer throughout her cancer treatment, and she is now in remission. Lauer has been on an aromatase inhibitor for five years to reduce her risk for recurrence, working with hematologist oncologist Nicholas Lamparella, DO, with LVH Hematology Oncology. He notes side effects from the medication can include fatigue and bone density issues – as well as hot flashes and insomnia – but Lauer’s lifestyle has helped her avoid them.

"Faith has been able to take the medication and tolerates it well," Dr. Lamparella says. "She is doing everything she can for herself as far as a healthy lifestyle. She remains active, goes to the gym, and has a very positive attitude."

Adds Lauer, “Exercise has helped with minimal side effects. I’m back to strength and metabolic training.”

After completing radiation, Lauer challenged herself to

participate in a Tough Mudder 10K, followed by the Women's 5K Classic run for breast cancer awareness.

“It was pouring down rain, but we were all survivors – and it was awesome,” Lauer says.

Her next New Year’s resolution will be to “just keep going.” “It was a scary, scary journey, and I'm very thankful that things are going in the right direction (with my treatment). I am in the gym four days a week and started doing yoga and weights on the other days,” she says.

Her next fitness goal? To run a half marathon.

Driving Success Beyond Tomorrow

"Faith's personal commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle is going to help her live a long and enjoyable life," Dr. McIntosh says. "Cancer is scary because there are many things that are out of your control as a patient. Faith has found something that she can do each day to help her physical and mental health, but also improve her odds of beating her cancer."

The Specialized World of Pediatric Dentistry: A Path to Lifelong Oral Health

Walking into a dental office as a child, the blend of unfamiliar sounds and smells can be overwhelming. Yet, what kept me coming back wasn’t just the promise of a sticker or toy—it was the small moments of comfort and care that turned a potentially daunting experience into something special. Today, at Lesavoy Pediatric Dentistry, we strive to create those same moments for every child. Whether it's offering toothpaste in flavors as tempting as any dessert or turning routine check-ups into fun adventures, our mission is to ensure that each visit leaves a lasting, positive impression.

Pediatric dentistry is a unique specialty within the field of dentistry, tailored specifically to the needs of infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special healthcare needs. While many are familiar with general dentists, the distinctions between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist are profound and essential for understanding the importance of specialized care during a child’s formative years.

Understanding a Pediatric Dentist’s Role

A pediatric dentist undergoes extensive training beyond dental school, completing a 2-3 year pediatric dental residency. During this time, pediatric dentists gain expertise in areas such as child psychology, growth and development, behavioral guidance, and managing dental issues specific to children. This training equips them to address children's oral health comprehensively and collaboratively, often working in coordination with other medical and dental specialists to provide the most effective care.

Pediatric dentistry is not just about treating small mouths—it's about understanding the developmental stages of a child's oral

and overall health. From monitoring the proper development of baby teeth (also known as "primary teeth") to managing the eruption of permanent teeth, pediatric dentists play a critical role in ensuring a child's dental health is on the right track.

Baby teeth begin developing as early as four months in utero, with the dental calcification processes of permanent teeth starting at birth. Typically, primary teeth begin to emerge around 5-8 months of age, starting with the lower central incisors and continuing until around 20-30 months with the second primary molars. These 20 primary teeth eventually give way to 20 permanent teeth, with an additional 12 permanent molars, including wisdom teeth, which erupt later in life. Understanding this timeline is crucial for ensuring that dental interventions are timely and effective.

Dental Caries: A Disease of Diet and Time

One of the primary concerns in pediatric dentistry is the prevention and management of dental caries, commonly known as cavities. Dental caries is a dietary-microbial disease process that involves the interaction of teeth, bacteria, carbohydrate and sugar-rich diet, and time. Factors like genetics, salivary flow, and fluoride exposure also play a significant role in either exacerbating or moderating this disease process.

Cavities often develop when the mouth's natural balance is disrupted, especially after eating sugary or starchy snacks like sticky candy. These foods cause the mouth's acidity levels to rise, which gradually wears down the protective surfaces of teeth, leading to cavities if left unchecked. Saliva plays a crucial role in this process by helping to neutralize acids and repair tooth surfaces, particularly when fluoride is available.

Preventive Care: More Than Just Brushing

At Lesavoy Pediatric Dentistry, we emphasize preventive care, which is the cornerstone of maintaining long-term oral health. This includes educating families on the importance of proper oral hygiene practices and the science behind these recommendations. For instance, we advise using a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for infants due to their tendency to swallow and based on the dental calcification timelines, while children older than three should use a pea-sized amount. The timing of brushing is also essential; brushing before breakfast or waiting 20-30 minutes after eating can help protect enamel when it is most vulnerable to wear.

We also discuss the importance of how much sugar is consumed and how frequently it is consumed throughout the day. Snacking on sugary foods throughout the day causes repeated “acid attacks” on the teeth, making it harder for teeth to repair themselves and increasing the risk of cavities. That’s why we teach our patients and families to spread out their sugar intake and maintain good oral hygiene practices to protect their teeth.

Personalized Care for Lifelong Benefits

Our approach goes beyond simply informing patients of standard dental recommendations. We strive to provide a deeper understanding of the science and rationale behind these guidelines, ensuring that our patients and their families are empowered to make informed decisions about their oral health. Our goal as pediatric dentists is to foster a generation of happy, healthy, and enthusiastic dental patients who carry good habits into adulthood.

We take pride in offering personalized, gentle, and conservative care for each of our patients. By taking the time to educate and collaborate with families, we help lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

The Business of Caring for Employees at the Workplace: The Case for Employee Wellness Programs

In today's fast-paced business world, companies are increasingly recognizing the critical role of employee wellness in achieving organizational success. They are implementing comprehensive wellness programs in the workplace. Doing this not only leads to improved employee health but also results in reduced healthcare costs and enhanced productivity. By fostering a culture of health and well-being, businesses can create a more engaged and satisfied workforce.

Employee wellness programs are designed to address various aspects of health, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being. These programs often include initiatives such as fitness challenges, health screenings, mental health support, nutrition workshops, and stress management sessions. Companies can help prevent chronic diseases, reduce absenteeism, and enhance overall employee well-being by providing employees with the tools and resources to maintain and improve their health.

For instance, regular health screenings can detect potential health issues early, allowing for timely interventions and

preventing more serious conditions from developing. Fitness challenges and on-site exercise facilities encourage employees to stay active, reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions. Mental health support, including access to counseling services and stress management workshops, helps employees manage work-related stress and improves their emotional resilience.

One of the most significant benefits of implementing wellness programs is the potential for reduced healthcare costs. Healthier employees typically require fewer medical interventions and have lower healthcare expenses. By investing in preventive care and wellness initiatives, companies can mitigate the rising costs of medical care and insurance premiums. Healthier employees are less likely to require extended sick leave or suffer from productivity loss due to health-related issues, further contributing to cost savings.

Healthy employees are more productive employees. Wellness programs that promote physical activity, healthy eating, and stress management can lead to increased energy levels, better

focus, and improved mental clarity. Employees who feel their best are likelier to be engaged in their work, leading to higher productivity and efficiency.

For example, a wellness program that includes regular fitness activities can help employees maintain high energy levels throughout the day, reducing the likelihood of fatigue and burnout. Nutritional guidance and healthy eating initiatives can prevent energy crashes and promote sustained concentration. Mental health support can alleviate stress and anxiety, allowing employees to focus more effectively on their tasks.

Creating a healthy work environment goes beyond providing wellness resources; it involves fostering a culture of health within the organization. A comprehensive wellness program promotes a collective commitment to well-being, encouraging employees to adopt healthier lifestyles both in and out of the workplace.

When companies prioritize employee health, it sends a clear message that they value their workforce and are invested in their overall well-being. This commitment can lead to increased levels of employee satisfaction and loyalty. Employees who feel supported in their health and wellness journey are more likely to stay with the company, reducing turnover rates and associated recruitment and training costs.

Employee satisfaction is closely linked to their perception of how much their employer cares about them. A robust wellness program can significantly enhance job satisfaction

by addressing employees' physical, mental, and emotional needs. When employees feel that their employer is genuinely concerned about their health, it fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation.

Wellness programs that offer a variety of activities and resources cater to the diverse needs and preferences of the workforce, ensuring that all employees can find something beneficial. Whether it's a yoga class, a weight loss challenge, or a financial wellness seminar, providing a range of options demonstrates a commitment to holistic employee well-being.

Ultimately, a company's wellness begins with its employees' wellness. Healthy and satisfied employees are the foundation of a thriving organization. By investing in employee wellness programs, businesses can reap the benefits of increased retention, lower medical costs, and a more positive company culture.

A well-designed wellness program can transform the workplace into a supportive and health-focused environment where employees feel valued and empowered to take charge of their health. This, in turn, creates a ripple effect, leading to a more engaged, productive, and loyal workforce. As businesses continue to navigate the challenges of the modern workplace, prioritizing employee wellness will be a key driver of long-term success and sustainability.

The Power of Networking and Brand Building in Health & Life Sciences and Beyond

EXPERT IN EQUIPMENT, VALIDATION, AND TEMPERATURE MAPPING AT ELLAB

We've all heard the saying, "Don't burn any bridges,"—but what if we focused instead on building them? In today’s interconnected world, the true power of business lies in the relationships we cultivate. Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards or connecting on LinkedIn; it’s about creating meaningful relationships that drive innovation, efficiency, and growth. In the health and life sciences industry, where precision, compliance, and trust are paramount, these connections are the foundation upon which we build advancements in technology, patient care, and operational excellence.

But building bridges isn't just about networking; it's also about establishing a strong, credible brand that others want to connect with. Building a personal and professional brand is crucial in niche areas like temperature mapping and validation, where expertise is highly valued. By sharing valuable insights through platforms like LinkedIn and creating content that resonates with your audience, you expand your network and solidify your position as a leader in your field.

The Value of Networking in High-Stakes Industries:

With over 24 years in the health and life sciences sector, I've learned that success often hinges on the strength of your network and the reputation you build within that network. Whether collaborating on a groundbreaking commissioning, qualification, and validation project or seeking the latest in digital marketing strategies to reach new clients, your network is your most valuable asset. Through these connections, I've built and promoted my brand, particularly around my expertise in temperature mapping and validation in Health and Life Sciences.

Lessons from the Trenches:

During my career, I've seen firsthand how networking can transform businesses and personal brands. I've partnered with top-tier companies like AstraZeneca, Merck, Moderna, Wyeth, and MedImmune to ensure compliance through partnering with them in commissioning, qualification and validation, and innovative temperature mapping techniques. These collaborations didn't happen in isolation; they resulted from years of networking, attending industry conferences, and contributing to thought leadership forums.

By leveraging platforms like LinkedIn, I've been able to share my insights and establish myself as a thought leader in the field. My posts, articles, and even webinars on temperature mapping are not just about imparting knowledge—they're about building a brand that is synonymous with quality, compliance, and innovation.

Networking Beyond the Expected:

Effective networking isn’t limited to your immediate industry. Expanding your network to include professionals from complementary fields like IT, architecture, design, storage, and transportation can provide fresh perspectives and solutions you might not have considered. For example, a collaboration between a healthcare provider and a cybersecurity expert can lead to the development of secure, compliant data systems that ensure data integrity, protect patient information, and enhance trust.

Likewise, creating content that resonates across these industries— such as detailed guides on data integrity, environmental monitoring, temperature mapping, and more—can amplify your brand’s reach and impact.

The Give and Take of Networking and Brand Building:

The secret to successful networking and brand building? Focus on the give. In every relationship, whether with an engineer sharing technical expertise or, a manager providing strategic guidance, an attorney offering legal counsel, or an accountant delivering financial advice, the most fruitful connections come from a place of generosity. By offering your expertise, resources, or simply your time, you lay the foundation for a relationship that will yield mutual benefits in the long run.

This philosophy extends to content creation as well. By consistently providing valuable content—whether through LinkedIn posts, articles, or eBooks like my 'Six Steps to Effective Temperature Mapping'—I've built a brand people trust and turn to for reliable information.

Building Your Network and Your Brand:

For business leaders in the Lehigh Valley and beyond, networking is not just about who you know but how you connect with them— and how you position your brand within those connections. This reminds me of John Maxwell's book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect, which emphasizes the importance of genuine connection in effective communication. Here are some actionable steps to build and maintain a powerful network and a strong brand:

1. Engage in Thought Leadership: Share your knowledge through articles, webinars, and speaking engagements. This positions you as an expert in your field and attracts likeminded professionals who value your insights. Capturing people's interest and creating an engaging experience is crucial for making meaningful connections.

2. Use LinkedIn Strategically: Leverage LinkedIn for networking and brand building. Regularly share content that reflects your expertise and your brand's values. Engage with your audience by responding to comments, asking questions, and fostering discussions. Finding common ground and keeping your communication simple can help you connect more effectively with your audience.

3. Create Valuable Content: Develop content that addresses the pain points and interests of your audience. Whether it’s a technical guide on temperature mapping or a blog post on industry trends, ensure that your content adds value and reinforces your brand’s position as a leader in the field. Authenticity in your relationships and content is key to building trust and credibility.

4. Attend Industry Events: Whether it’s a healthcare conference or a cybersecurity summit, being present at these events allows you to meet key players, discover opportunities for collaboration, and promote your brand. Creating an enjoyable experience for others at these events can leave a lasting impression and strengthen your connections.

5. Cultivate Long-Term Relationships: Networking doesn’t end after the first handshake. Follow up with new connections, offer assistance when you can, and keep the lines of communication open. Your brand will benefit from the trust and credibility you build over time. Consistently creating positive experiences for your connections can help maintain and deepen these relationships.

Conclusion:

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to network effectively and build a strong brand can be the difference

Continuous Monitoring to Keep Your Assets Safe

• Regulatory Compliance & Custom Reports

• Data Integrity & System Security

• Alerts & Notifications

• Scalable Solutions

• Remote & On-Site Support with Reliable Partners

between staying stagnant and achieving exponential growth. For business leaders across all industries, from healthcare to cybersecurity, the key is to be valuable, be the first to give, and be open to the endless possibilities that a strong network and a well-established brand can bring.

Call to Action:

As you continue building your network and brand, remember that each connection is an opportunity to learn, grow, and innovate. Whether you're attending the next VIP release party for Network Magazine or engaging with your peers online, make the most of every opportunity to connect, collaborate, and create value—not just for yourself but for your entire network. Your future success depends on the bridges you build today.

The IRA and Medicare

MIRIAM BRIDGEMAN, BRIDGEMAN STRATEGIC CONCEPTS

When I think about IRAs, I think about Individual Retirement Accounts. However, when it comes to Medicare, the IRA means something very different. The IRA regarding Medicare is the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden's prescription drug law, signed on August 16, 2022. This new law will provide financial help to millions of people participating in Medicare by lowering the cost of drugs.

To understand the changes, we need to discuss the current Medicare prescription coverage standards. Each plan is set differently. Prescription plans can have or do not have a deductible, and those deductibles may start with the first tier or any other tier. Okay, you're probably thinking about what a tier is. A formulary is the list of drugs each plan covers. Each drug is divided then into tiers 1-5. Tier one is preferred generics, tier two is generic drugs, tier three is preferred brand name drugs, tier four is non-preferred drugs, and finally, tier five is specialty drugs. As you probably guessed, if your med falls into tier one, it would be less expensive than tier three. After the deductible is satisfied, if the plan has one, we move into the initial coverage stage –when you pay a co-pay or co-insurance for the prescription. Once your total costs reach $5,030 in 2024, you will fall into the gap. This number is what you pay personally combined with what the plan pays. When you are in the gap, you pay 25% of the costs of your drugs until your total out-of-pocket reaches $8,000 again, combined with what you and the plan pay. Once you have passed the $8,000 out-of-pocket, you pay $0, and you will be in the catastrophic coverage stage through the end of the year. The following year, the plan resets, and we begin again.

The first rollout happened in 2023. The biggest change here was the cap on insulin to $35 per month. This phase also eliminated the cost share for adult vaccines. It added inflationary rebates to Medicare if the manufacturer raised the cost of drugs higher than the inflation rate.

The second phase in 2024 removed the catastrophic coverage costs to the members. Once they made it through the donut hole on the other side, there was no cost for the prescriptions for the rest of the year. In prior years, you paid a co-pay to receive meds after the donut hole. It expanded the low-income subsidy and created a premium increase cap of 6%.

The third phase of the IRA will affect everyone on Medicare and will roll out in January 2025. Plans should be shopped in October through Dec 7th for the new year's start. This IRA change caps the drug costs to $2,000/year for the beneficiary. The donut hole is finally removed from Medicare, which is when people fall into the coverage gap – there won't be one. Once your drug cost reaches $2,000, your meds will not cost you anything for the balance of the year. That can still be a big number for many beneficiaries receiving Medicare, so they have added a Medicare prescription payment plan option to help spread the costs throughout the year, which will be managed by the carriers. Additionally, there are new manufacturer discount programs.

It doesn't end there, even though it is a significant overhaul of the Medicare prescription plan costs. From 2026 through 2028, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid will begin price negotiations for some drugs.

If you are on Medicare, you should have received an annual notice of changes (ANOC) in September to review your current benefits and see what's changing for next year. This comes in the mail and doesn't look very important, so it is often missed. Don't stress if you've missed it – be sure to contact your insurance agent beginning October 1st, as they will have the plan details and can discuss the plans for 2025.

These changes will affect The standalone prescription plans and the Medicare Advantage plans with prescription coverage. Chances are, if you're on Medicare, you have one or the other unless you have prescription coverage through a retiree program. All carriers across the board will be affected. Some carriers have chosen not to offer prescription coverage, have reduced their offerings; or decided to pull out of specific areas all together. This is the year to connect with your agent to review your plan to make sure it’s exactly what your health and budget deserve.

We’ve been planning for the 2025 Annual Enrollment Period for a while in preparation for all the changes. After reading this, if you still have questions, please be sure to contact us at Bridgeman Strategic Concepts. We look forward to helping you with your Medicare needs.

Is Your Business Protected Against Fraud Risks?

Fraud is increasing in prevalence and sophistication across all industries, and we must remain vigilant now more than ever. Scammers are trying new ways every day to gain access to sensitive information from businesses.

Three of the most common scams businesses are fighting and need to be vigilant about are:

1. Phishing Scams

2. Invoice Fraud

3. Bank Account Takeovers

Phishing Scams

Phishing is a type of identity theft that involves tricking your employees into giving away company information that can be used for malicious purposes. This often involves creating fake websites, emails, or texts that appear to be from legitimate companies.

Examples of this could include:

• An employee gets an email from one of your company's vendors asking them to click a link to update your business account.

• A team member receives a text message, appearing to be from you (the business owner), asking them to update their network password via a link.

Before you or your employees click on a link or share any sensitive information:

1. Look up the website and phone number for the person or company attempting to contact your staff.

2. To take this further, call the legitimate numbers you find and ask if they are trying to reach you.

3. Encourage team members and managers to talk to each other in suspicious situations. Talking it out loud might help them determine that the request is a phishing attempt.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) encourages businesses to protect themselves from phishing and other scams by backing up their data regularly, keeping security on all technology up to date, educating staff on recent scams and proactive measures, and having a safety net (such as email authentication technology) to help prevent phishing emails from coming through.

Invoice Fraud

One of the leading types of fraud targeting businesses is invoice fraud. On average, invoice fraud costs U.S. companies $280,000 annually.

Invoice fraud involves sending fake invoices, often with convincing documentation, to trick your business into making an unauthorized payment. Fraudsters will take steps to appear as trusted vendors.

As a business, it is essential to watch for these red flags:

• Changes in payment instructions from vendors

• Urgent requests that seem unusual

• Discrepancies on invoices

• Unusual or strange formatting on invoices

To be successful, these fraudsters take advantage of weaknesses in a business's accounts payable practices. Educating yourself and your employees on recognizing these scams and implementing preventive measures is imperative to safeguard your business from invoice fraud. When in doubt,

pick up the phone and call your vendor directly at a trusted number. You are your strongest advocate!

Bank Account Takeovers

A bank account takeover occurs when cyber criminals gain control of a company's bank account by stealing the business's online banking credentials. Most commonly, this involves malware a fraudster has installed on a business computer, which either allows them access to the credentials or allows them to initiate an online banking session and impersonate an employee or owner.

With this type of scam, criminals tend to target small-tomedium-sized businesses (as opposed to larger companies) because small businesses often do not have the same level of resources to defend themselves and cannot monitor accounts as frequently due to having a smaller staff.

Here are some best practices to prevent cyber criminals from accessing your most vulnerable company information:

1. Use a dedicated computer and workstation for all financial transactions.

2. Ensure anti-virus, malware, and spyware software is installed and working.

3. Have your IT administrator implement multi-layered system security technology. The more barriers you can create between your network and an attacker, the better.

At Members 1st Federal Credit Union, we are committed to protecting your business from fraud and better-equipping organizations with ways to avoid becoming victims.

Business Credit Score Basics and How to Improve Them

Understanding the nuances of financial management can be crucial for long-term success when running a business. One key component in any business's financial toolkit is its credit score. This score plays a crucial role in securing financing and managing business relationships. Let's dive into what business credit scores are, how they are calculated, and why they are important.

What is a Business Credit Score?

A business credit score is a numerical expression representing a company's creditworthiness. Similar to personal credit scores, these scores are used by lenders, suppliers, and other entities to evaluate the risk of doing business with your company. A higher score indicates lower risk, which can be pivotal when negotiating better terms with suppliers or securing financing.

How are Business Credit Scores Calculated?

Business credit scores range from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better creditworthiness. These scores are calculated using several factors:

• Credit Utilization Ratio: This evaluates the amount of credit you currently utilize compared to the total amount available. Lower utilization rates often lead to higher credit scores.

• Payment History: Timely payments on business loans, credit cards, and invoices from suppliers can positively impact your score. Conversely, late payments can cause your score to drop.

• Company Size and Industry Risk: Some scoring models consider the size of your business and the risk associated with your industry sector. These factors can influence your score depending on the economic environment and trends within specific industries.

• Public Records: Bankruptcies, liens, and judgments against your business can negatively impact your score. Maintaining a clean legal record is essential for keeping your score high.

Why are Business Credit Scores Important?

Understanding and managing your business credit score can have several benefits:

• Easier Loan Approval: A good business credit score can improve your chances of being greenlit for business loans and at more favorable interest rates.

• Better Supplier Terms: Suppliers often check credit scores before establishing terms of credit. A higher score can result in more attractive terms, such as extended payment periods or discounts.

• Business Opportunities: Some companies evaluate potential business partners' credit scores before entering into agreements. A good score can increase your attractiveness as a business partner.

• Length of Credit History: The age of your business's credit accounts can affect your score. Older accounts generally contribute to a higher score as they demonstrate a longer credit management history.

• Protection of Personal Credit: Building and using business credit can protect your personal credit from business-related debts and inquiries.

How to Improve Your Business Credit Score?

Improving your business credit score involves several strategic steps:

• Pay Your Bills on Time: Make sure all bills are paid on or before their due dates to avoid negative impacts on your score.

• Monitor Your Credit Reports: Routinely check your business credit reports for inaccuracies or fraudulent activities. You can obtain reports from most of the major business credit bureaus.

• Manage Your Credit Utilization: Keep your credit utilization low by paying down balances and not overextending your business credit.

• Establish Credit Accounts: Open business credit accounts with lenders that report to the credit bureaus. This helps to build a credit history for your business.

Understanding and managing your business credit score is a fundamental aspect of financial health for any company. By keeping informed and proactive about your credit, you can enhance your business's economic stability and open up new opportunities for growth and partnership. Remember, a strong business credit score is a stepping stone to broader financial success.

Fostering a Welcoming Workplace in a Hybrid World

Our businesses are going through a crisis of connectivity. This isn’t the kind of connectivity related to ChatGPT or internet security breaches; it’s about social connectivity. A 2022 Microsoft Work Trend Index report revealed that 51% of employees felt their relationships outside their immediate work group had weakened. Then, a 2023 HubSpot study showed that 66% of employees lack a strong connection with their co-workers.

These statistics would make any leader pause. After all, disconnection among colleagues often relates to a lack of connection to the company itself.

In talking with corporate leaders, there is little indication that collegial or company connection has improved in the ‘back to office’ transition. Many companies are still searching for an effective approach to remote, hybrid, and in-office work. The result is myriad experiments happening simultaneously at scale.

During the back-to-office transition, many employers have astutely focused on social connectivity with co-workers as a reason for returning to work. Building team bonds and socializing with coworkers were strong motivators for employees in the 2022 Work Trend Index survey. But is an “everyone-in-on-Wednesday “schedule enough to build trust between colleagues? Will it enhance collaboration and facilitate high-stakes problem-solving?

At LINC, we specialize in fostering social connections. We believe organizational leaders can learn from our approach to creating a welcoming community in the workplace.

What Is a Welcoming Community?

A welcoming community goes beyond being merely friendly. It's a place where employees experience a culture of inclusion, belonging, and fairness—not just in how they are treated but through the organization's policies, structures, and norms that uphold these values.

Drawing from the concept of a welcoming community, which includes qualities like educational opportunities, affordable housing, and positive attitudes toward immigrants, a welcoming workplace should embody these principles in its own context.

Taking inspiration from the welcoming community playbook may be the next step in addressing your hybrid work and social connectivity challenges.

Steps to Move toward a Welcoming Workplace

1. Create and Communicate a Culture Code of Conduct

According to a 2022 Edelman Trust report, 69% of employees view their co-workers as a significant source of community in their lives. A welcoming workplace clearly outlines norms and expectations for respectful, productive employee interactions. The Corporate Racial Equity Alliance provides a framework for a culture code of conduct in its draft Business Standards for 21st Century Leadership report, which can serve as a starting point for discussion.

2. Mentor, Coach, and Train Managers to Model Inclusive Leadership

In a hybrid model, team leaders and people managers play a critical role in signaling organizational values and priorities. McKinsey & company identified 17 key factors that result in an inclusive workplace environment, and among the leadership qualities are: participative decision-making, team building, and impartial treatment.

• Incorporate these leadership qualities into managers’ performance reviews and regular check-ins to identify strengths and areas needing sustained attention.

• Encourage employees to engage in ongoing professional development through events like LINC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Roundtables, which cover topics such as generational bias and neurodiversity in the workplace.

3. Enable Employees to Raise Issues Anonymously

The negative effects of a toxic culture, discrimination, and misconduct are well-documented and continue to pose significant challenges despite their ties to employee attrition and financial costs (MIT Sloan Management Review, 2022). A welcoming workplace ensures employees can report unsafe working conditions, bias, and harassment without fear of retaliation. Consider ways for employees to report incidents anonymously and then act on what is learned.

When we lay the groundwork for social connectivity at work, we create a more fun, productive working environment and make sure the people we work with feel supported day-to-day.

Ultimate Pickleball Fitness Plan

Master the court and reduce injury with this all-in-one workout

In recent years, pickleball has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming the go-to sport for over 50 fitness enthusiasts seeking a dynamic and engaging workout. Who knew whacking a wiffle ball with a paddle would be the hottest thing since avocado toast? Originating in the 1960s, this sport has seen a comeback, attracting players across generations due to its fast-paced nature and accessibility. But before you jump onto the court, it's crucial to understand the importance of a well-rounded workout plan that enhances your gameplay and helps prevent common pickleball injuries.

The High Impact of Common Injuries

Pickleball, like any sport, comes with its fair share of risks. With the surge in the game's popularity, a 2021 study (1) reveals a corresponding uptick in pickleball-related injuries. Among the most frequently reported issues are sprains and strains. Interestingly, the study noted that a staggering 85 percent of these injuries occurred among players aged 60 and above. The repetitive motion, quick pivots, and sudden acceleration involved in pickleball can lead to common injuries that can hurt your game while helping your doctor pay his kids’ college tuition. Some of the most frequent injuries include:

• Rotator Cuff Strain: The overhead movements required for serving and smashing can place strain on your shoulder's rotator cuff muscles, leading to discomfort.

• Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): The repeated swinging motion of the paddle can strain the tendons in your forearm, leading to inflammation and pain on the outer part of your elbow.

• Ankle Sprains: The quick changes in direction and lateral

movements can put your ankles at risk for sprains, especially if you're not wearing proper footwear or haven't warmed up adequately.

• Knee Injuries: Some say pickleball is just an elaborate ploy to sell more knee braces. The constant bending, lunging, and sudden stops during pickleball can lead to knee injuries, such as sprains or meniscus tears.

• Lower Back Strain: Poor posture and improper body mechanics can lead to strain on your lower back, resulting in discomfort or even more serious injuries.

The good news is that you can lift weights to protect yourself from getting hurt. A 2018 review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2) found that a progressive resistance exercise routine can lower the chance of sports-related injuries.

Ultimate Pickleball Fitness Plan

These days, you're either into pickleball or wondering what happened to your golf buddies. Incorporate a well-structured workout plan to fully enjoy this sport and reduce the risk of injury. Not only will this plan enhance your performance on the court, but it will also contribute to your overall health and fitness.

1. Dynamic Warmup

Before engaging in any physical activity, it's crucial to prepare your muscles and joints for the demands of the game. Start with dynamic moves that target your shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles. A few minutes of arm circles, jumping jacks, and bodyweight squats are excellent choices to get your body ready for action.

2. Cardiovascular Conditioning

Pickleball requires constant movement and quick bursts of energy. To build cardiovascular endurance, engage in activities like running, cycling, or jumping rope. Aim for a moderate to high intensity, maintaining your heart rate within your target range for 16 minutes. This will improve your stamina on the court and enhance your overall fitness level.

3. Strength Training

A strong body helps you maintain proper form and prevent injury. Incorporate a mix of resistance-training exercises to target key muscle movements:

• Dumbbell Goblet Squats enhance leg strength and stability.

• Dumbbell Lunges build lower body strength and coordination.

• Dumbbell Incline Chest Presses strengthen your chest, shoulders, and triceps.

• Dumbbell One-Arm Lat Rows strengthen your back and improve posture.

• Lat Pullups with Neutral Grip improves your vertical-pulling strength while minimizing stress on your shoulders and elbows. The side benefit is a stronger grip.

• Dumbbell Standing Shoulder Presses create stronger shoulders. Perform from a seated position, with back support, if you have a history of lower-back issues.

• Prone Core Planks improve core stability, which is crucial for balance on the court.

4. Pickleball-Specific Drills

To truly excel on the pickleball court, you must practice pickleballspecific drills that mimic the movements and gameplay. These drills can include:

• Forehand and Backhand Volleys: Practice hitting the ball over the net using both sides of your paddle.

• Serving Practice: Work on your serves to ensure accuracy and consistency.

• Footwork Drills: Focus on quick changes in direction, lateral movements, and pivots.

• Reaction Time Exercises: Use a partner or a ball machine to improve your reaction time and agility.

Dedicate about 10 minutes to these drills, ensuring a mix of skill development and fitness enhancement. Pickleball strategy: Hit the ball where your opponent least expects it – like their face.

5. Recovery

Maintaining flexibility is essential to prevent injuries, especially those related to strained muscles or joints. Incorporate static stretches that target your shoulders, hips, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds and repeat 2-3 times on each side. Incorporate deep breathing and mindfulness exercises to promote relaxation and aid in recovery.

6. Mindful Nutrition and Hydration

No workout plan is complete without considering your nutritional needs. Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Hydration is also vital, so drink water before, during, and after your workouts to stay properly hydrated.

Pickle is undoubtedly a fantastic way to stay active, engage in friendly competition, and have a blast with friends and family. However, as with any physical activity, it's essential to approach it with caution and respect for your body. By following the ultimate pickleball workout plan outlined above, you'll get fit, enhance your gameplay, and minimize the risk of common injuries.

As an experienced business leader with a firm grasp of finance, sales, and profit and loss management, stepping into the winery business might seem like treading new terroir. However, the fundamentals of starting a business remain the same—understand your market, manage your costs, ensure you can sell your product at a profit, find the most talented leaders, and team build at every opportunity. When it comes to starting a family and woman and veteran-owned winery in Pennsylvania that also imports grapes from premier American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) like Washington, Oregon, and California, there are unique economic considerations to navigate. One of my favorite expressions is, "There are many ways to receive an education, and few of them are cheap." Here's a breakdown of what potential investors and business enthusiasts should know.

UNDERSTANDING THE MARKET

First, I believe there are three distinct businesses rolled into a winery. There is an agricultural business related to growing grapes of the highest quality. There is an entertainment business consisting of hosting memorable events and promoting fun. Finally, there is the business of making great wines. While we dabble in the first two, our core mission and key business differentiator is to make great wines. Our winehouse is seeking refined consumers who may otherwise visit Sonoma, Napa, and France. Convincing the Pennsylvania consumer that great wines are closer to home has been a challenge our team of sommeliers readily undertake every weekend.

COST CONSIDERATIONS

1. Sourcing Grapes

Importing grapes from states like California, Oregon, and Washington is inherently more expensive than using local Pennsylvania grapes. Due to their superior quality and demand, the ever-increasing transportation costs, risk of spoilage, interstate commerce regulations, and the price per ton of grapes from these prestigious AVAs can be significantly higher than local prices.

2. Licensing and Regulations

Navigating the regulatory environment is crucial. This includes obtaining the necessary permits to start a winery from the PLCB to the TTB to the USDA.

3. Facility and Equipment

Starting a winery requires significant investment in facilities and equipment. As cash is the lifeblood of any business, developing a strategy that accounts for adequate equipment at startup and incremental investment which balances investment efficiency with cash flow management.

4. Labor

Skilled winemakers are essential to ensure the grapes are processed into high-quality wine. While Pennsylvania offers a growing pool of local talent in winemaking, the specific experience with grapes from premier AVAs and developing internationally award-winning wines is limited, so finding and retaining them is absolutely critical.

5. Marketing

The marketing strategy should leverage both direct-to-consumer sales and partnerships with high-end restaurants and specialty stores, aiming to attract a niche market willing to pay premium prices. Implementing robust digital marketing campaigns and establishing a compelling online presence will be crucial.

REVENUE STREAMS AND SALES STRATEGY

1. Direct-to-Consumer Sales (Retail Sales)

This model offers the highest margins but carries the complexities of attracting customers. Sales strategies include opening a tasting room, developing a wine club, and implementing a strong online sales platform. Given the quality and uniqueness of our wine, these strategies need to appeal to a niche market willing to pay premium prices.

The tasting room model is the cornerstone of this business; our team of sommeliers educates consumers in a fun and approachable manner. Education is the foundation of appreciating the nuances that separate fine wines from even finer wines, which ultimately reinforces the pricing premiums that world-class wines can command. Our goal is always to value our customers and create the best possible experiences with the backdrop of exquisite vintages.

The next phase of DTC for us will be ecommerce. We plan to continue refinement of our new website and optimize search engine optimization (SEO) for online wine sales.

2. Restaurants and Specialty Stores (Commercial Sales)

Partnering with high-end restaurants can help place the product in front of consumers who appreciate premium. This partnership is valuable for both parties. Our commercial sales program offers the customers' staff training from our sommeliers, access to premium products at attractive prices, links to their business websites from ours (which enhances their SEO metrics), and most importantly creates a symbiotic marketing arrangement where both parties benefit from increased customer awareness.

3. Wholesale Distribution

Although this channel offers lower margins, it can achieve higher volumes. A robust distribution network can help penetrate markets outside Pennsylvania, especially in states that already recognize the quality of grapes from Washington, Oregon, and California. With fixed output capacity, to achieve an overall contribution margin that fully absorbs our fixed costs, we need to manage the volume of wine sold through channels with low margins to maximize our ability to saturate the higher-margin retail market wine.

CONCLUSION

Entering the winery business in Pennsylvania is a venture that combines the complexities of agriculture, manufacturing, and luxury goods marketing. For a business leader with no prior wine industry experience but deep expertise in finance and sales, the key is leveraging business acumen to build a brand that can justify the premium costs associated with importing high-quality grapes. With meticulous planning and strategic execution, this venture not only promises an exciting entry into the world of wine but also the potential for fruitful returns.

How your brain works and how to achieve life-changing mental clarity.1

Your insurance company likely pays for you to have a full course of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for free after failing two antidepressant medications.

Do you even know what TMS is? If not, why not?

Let us explain what TMS is.

Our brain contains billions of neurons. Those neurons are shaped like a drip of molasses, with a big head and a long thin tail.

Electricity moves through them, and they are coiled in all different directions. So, the electricity in them is also coiled in lots of different directions.

The crazy thing is though, when the electricity moves, it also gives off spikes of magnetic energy and they spike off perpendicularly, like directly away from it.

Then you have literally billions of billions of these magnetic spikes going in all kinds of crazy directions, always away from the part of the neuron they came from.

Those spikes of magnetic energy are so many and so complex that they form a network. That network is what we call the mind.

Mental illness is illness of the mind. That means it is illness of the network of magnetic spikes going off in all different directions.

So how can that thing get ill?

Well … it actually can’t. There is nothing wrong with our mind.

Our mind cannot be ill. It is just a projection, like one of those things the planetarium produces.

The projection that you sit back and watch in the planetarium is your mind.

How can that projection be ill?

Now imagine you are stuck your whole life in that planetarium.

When that experience is bad, we are not able to see the entire world around us.

We might think we do, because we don’t know what the universe is supposed to look like, so however it looks to us, we believe to be the total picture of the universe.

Then you go over to other people and describe to them what you are seeing. But they act like they don’t know what you are talking about. They act like they see life completely differently.

Now you feel rejected.

But then you go over to the projector. And you realize it’s covered in dust. So, you get out an air blower and remove all of the dust. When you turn the projector back on and tilt your head back, you see beauty that you never knew was around you.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is that air blower. Only the dust on the projector is static electricity that builds up around brain neurons over time. The same way dust builds up on projectors.

TMS stands for “Treat My Static™.”

Welcome to the new and improved … you.1

It can’t. It is only a reflection of the planetarium projector. If the planetarium projector is broken, the planetarium experience will be bad.
