As we conclude an eventful 2024, the fall season has brought cooler weather and vibrant foliage to our parks, making it ideal for outdoor recreation. Our team has worked diligently to offer a variety of programs for all ages, and as winter approaches, we are excited for the return of snow tubing at Strawtown Koteewi Park. Infrastructure improvements have been a key focus, including the restoration of the Bell Ford Bridge at Geist Park, now placed on its piers. Additional projects include the restoration of the historic Williams House at Coxhall Gardens, utility upgrades at White River Campground, and the expansion of trails and bridges at the developing HC Farms. Playground enhancements are also underway at Prather Park. Sustainability efforts, such as native species restoration and pollinator pathways, have further strengthened our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Looking ahead to 2025, we are eager to g ather community input on future projects, such as the Master Plan for Burr Oak Bend Park, and to expand volunteer opportunities. We deeply appreciate the support of the Hamilton County community and look forward to providing even more exceptional outdoor experiences in the coming year.
Sincerely,

Chris Stice, CPRP, Director, Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department

Park Steward Program
The Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Park department’s Steward Program is a new volunteer-based initiative in which individuals or groups maintain designated HCPR parks or areas within the parks. Our inaugural class of Park Stewards includes Cool Creek Park Stewards Joel Calvin and Jeannine Mattingly; Strawtown Koteewi Park Steward Susan Steele; Potter’s Bridge Park Stewards Jeannie Wiesler and Brian Jonasen; and Morse Park and Beach Steward Mike Major. We are so grateful for all their help and for making our community a better place to live, work, and play! If you would like to become a Park Steward or learn more about the program, please contact our Community Outreach Coordinator, Steve Sneath at volunteer@hamiltoncounty.in.gov or by phone at 317-774-2509.

“I’m so glad to be part of the program. I got involved upon learning how much the invasives have changed our parks and natural areas. It is so gratifying to see the improvements with each effort we make and with the support of the parks department even more so. At times our progress seems slow, but we don’t get discouraged. Even if our part only makes a dent, we’ve still left an impression.”
~ Mike Major

Y12SR Meeting
Hamilton County Parks and Recreation is honored to bring Y12SR to our community. Y12SR is a 12-step based discussion and yoga practice open to anyone and everyone dealing with their own addictive behavior or affected by the addictive behavior of others. This is an open and inclusive group. All A’s are welcome. Y12SR connects the dots between the somatic approach of yoga, the cognitive approach of recovery models including the 12-steps, harm reduction, CBT, and the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing. Y12SR is grounded in the belief that addictions are rooted in broader cultural and societal contexts that create separation and disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our environment, and so much more.

Maple Madness at Bray Family Homestead Park
Join us for a day of sweet fun at Bray Family Homestead Park as we explore the art of making maple syrup! The tradition dates back 180 years, when the Bray family first tapped the trees on this very property. Our knowledgeable staff will share the rich history of the Bray family’s syrup-making process and its connection to Westfield’s Quaker roots. Throughout the event, you’ll have the chance to visit four interactive, staff-led stations demonstrating how to tap trees, boil sap, and make maple sugar. In addition to these hands-on experiences, Dragonwood Maple Syrup will be on-site offering locally produced maple products for purchase. Parking is available at Brehob Nursery off SR 38, with bus transportation provided to the park. Once at the park, a wagon will take you to our educational stations. Be sure to dress for the weather and prepare for potentially muddy conditions!

IU Health Day of Service Volunteers Work their Magic at Coxhall Gardens

On Friday, September 20th, staff from IU Health North Hospital and IU Health Saxony Hospital volunteered at Coxhall Gardens to make dramatic improvements to the park as part of their Days of Service — an initiative that allows their team members to come together and make a difference in the communities IU Health serves. A total of 161 team members worked on several projects throughout the park including planting 48 trees, refreshing the sand areas in the Children’s Garden, cleaning inside Coxhall Mansion and the Williams House, weeding, mulching, landscaping, and removing invasive species.
