Coming this Season Native Plants
For Sale at the Cool Creek Nature Center Greenhouse
One of the most important things we, as Hoosiers, can do for our environment is to plant native species that support our ecosystem. To aid in this mission, a select number of native plants from trusted growers will be for sale through the growing season in the greenhouse at the Cool Creek Nature Center. Native plants are well adapted to our area because they’ve evolved here and support our entire ecosystem. The plants have not been treated with pesticides and are priced to provide our customers with native plants for their home landscapes. Our knowledgeable staff can help with planting recommendations and further education. Quantities and species will vary due to what our suppliers have available.
Please contact us at 317-774-2500 or email us at cool.naturecenter@hamiltoncounty.in.gov for information regarding what species we are selling, or any other questions related to our sale.

Explore the Cosmos
The cosmos has captured the imagination of people throughout history. Ancient astronomers recorded their observations of the movements of celestial objects. Calendars were based on the position of the Earth and stars, and constellations were named after mythological heroes. The relatively recent advent of the telescope, followed by the advancement of powerful land and space-based telescopes, has led to the discoveries of nebulae, black holes, quasars, exoplanets, and galaxies so distantlight given off 13 billion years ago is just now reaching Earth! Indeed, interest in the cosmos is more significant than ever.
Join local astronomer/astrophotographer Doug Balogh each month as we explore the cosmos. A classroom-type discussion will cover topics in astronomy as well as fun facts about the objects to be viewed later that night. Attendees will move outdoors to train their telescopes skyward. All are welcome to view objects through the host’s telescopes. Attendees are highly encouraged to bring their telescopes. Assistance with telescope setup and use will be available for all.
In the event of inclement weather, the indoor meeting will still take place. However, the outdoor telescope viewing session may be canceled. Dress accordingly.

HCPR Staff Shoutout: Kerry Graham
Kerry Graham serves as a valued member of the Cool Creek Park Facilities and Grounds team. As Hamilton County Parks’ Heavy Equipment Operator, Kerry has proven that if a piece of equipment can lift, push, plow, dig or cut, he can operate it! He has been honing his remarkable skills since coming to work for HCPR in May of 1995. At that time, Kerry was a one-man mobile mowing crew. Since then and throughout his career with HCPR, he has applied his experience in the development of numerous key parks projects and yet has found time to contribute to the success of the department’s large-scale community events (his favorite being the popular Cool Creek Summer Concerts). All parks staff hold Kerry in high regard, not only for his undeniable abilities, but for his positive and caring attitude. That character attribute was on full display recently when our friend and co-worker aided Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputies in their successful efforts to save the life of a citizen in need (see accompanying photos of the Sheriff's Deputies recognition ceremony in which Kerry Graham was honored for his actions).
Kerry is the proud father of two daughters (one of which worked in the Cool Creek Nature Center), and loving grandfather to four grandchildren.
The next time you walk a maintained trail or enjoy the cover of a sturdy shelter in a Hamilton County Parks and Recreation park, think of Kerry Graham. And if you are just looking to enjoy a pleasant conversation with a kind soul in the park, Kerry’s your guy!
