“My passion ultimately comes from helping others solve problems,” says Cashmiyr Scott, co-owner and -operator of Chloe + Maddison Skin Studio, located in Colorado Springs’ Old North End neighborhood. “This profession allows me to use artistry to help people feel better about themselves, and that to me is priceless.”

Cashmiyr specializes in a technique called micro blading, a cosmetic tattoo that replicates eyebrow hair, while her husband, co-owner -operator Rodney performs scalp micropigmentation services, another method that involves filling in balding areas to give the look of a 5 o’clock shadow as he describes it. The Scotts also employ an eyeliner specialist and traditional esthetician to offer treatments like waxing and lash extensions.

Chloe + Maddison, named for the couples’ two daughters, holds the honor of being the first standalone permanent makeup studio in Colorado Springs, says Rodney, noting other permanent makeup artists tend to work in spaces attached to hair studios. Cashmiyr too started that way, renting space inside Salon Tava off Eighth Street four years ago before the couple made the leap to their own storefront two years ago.

“I feel like we’ve brought permanent makeup to life in town, and my goal is to expose it to newcomers,” says Rodney, who has an MBA in marketing operations management, and notes a three-month wait-list currently for certain services at Chloe + Maddison.

“I got microblading done myself and realized how much of a time saver it was and how much it was doing for women, so I was instantly intrigued,” Cashmiyr says, by way of how she came to her craft. “After getting out of the military, I tried a few jobs but felt unfulfilled as I wasn’t really utilizing my talents. I’ve always been into makeup as far back as high school, so in rediscovering my passion I went to The Salon Professional Academy for esthetics and shortly after discovered permanent makeup… skin care is paramount for me so I want to help express the importance within that.”

She had served three and half years in the Army, in logistics, while Rodney counts 17 years in the Air Force, 11 of those as a reservist; he also worked in logistics for the majority of that time. Those respective experiences set the couple up well with skills that apply directly to owning their own business, but they still turned to the Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center for guidance on multiple aspects of running and growing their quickly successful enterprise.

The Scotts took advantage of the SBDC’s free workshops. And SBDC Senior Consultant on the Veterans Small Business program, and Vietnam Veteran Ron O’Herron mentored the couple, bringing not only decades of high-level business experience to the table, but a sense of camaraderie given his own military background. “He gave us valuable insights,” says Rodney, “tips on what to do and not to do, such as not growing too fast, how to secure our accounting, tax structuring, that type of thing. It especially was helpful as we moved from the old location to our new one.”

Then, when the pandemic hit and Chloe + Maddison was forced to shut down along with salons all over the state, Rodney and Cashmiyr reapproached the SBDC for help in secur-

ing both PPP (Payroll Protection Program) and EIDL (Economic Injury Disaster Loan) funding.

“It was a smooth process,” Rodney says. “They communicated with us back and forth about the necessary questionnaires and forms and helped us navigate the SBA (Small Business Administration) portal. It was seamless.”

He says a big part of success is leaning into the advice of other professionals, so they’ve invested wisely in the services of other local businesses to help build everything from a slick logo to professional website. Their overall branding has attracted “all walks of life” as clientele, though almost exclusively women, including many high-power business professionals. That in itself speaks to success, especially for a minority-owned business.

“People come to us because we do great work,” Rodney says. “We just happen to be Black. They see that and know we’re Black. We don’t have to shout about it.”

But what’s important about embracing that blackness in business, he says, is “representation.” Cashmiyr is the beautiful face of the business, and she’s well represented in an inspirational way on the website and social media, even on after-care cards sent to clients.

“We get feedback,” he says, “and those clients say how their daughter was so happy to see a Black woman on this card, they hadn’t seen that before. It lets them know, ‘hey, I can do that.’”

record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

DJ Washington, owner of Coolbreeze Touch Of Hair LLC is a New Orleans native. A jack of many trades and educational background, Ms. Washington has made a life for herself as a mother, stylist/braider, and woman of God. Ms. Washington made Colorado her home in May of 2006 when she married her late husband, David Washington. She has always believed in the empowerment of minority businesses, especially women.

Ms. Washington has co-founded the Know Your Worth Women Empowerment Group on Facebook, along with I love Me Journey LLC/Extreme Hip Hop with Diamond owner Treneicia Dunlap. Together they fill encouragement to women, have an annual cancer benefit, and participate in many different programs to uplift the community. Being a cancer survivor herself, Ms. Washington uses her platform to bless other cancer patients from Dr. Pikart UC Health Cancer Center. Despite any adversity Ms. Washington has encountered, her faith in God and support from her Philippian Church of God in Christ Family under the leadership of Pastor Herbert Lofton have gotten her through them. Ms. Washington’s message is simply to be a Victor, not a victim.

With such a strong foundation, Ms. Washington makes sure she creates a comfortable, encouraging, and relaxed environment for her Coolbreeze Touch Of Hair, LOYAL to get their hair done.

one public stylist. She considers herself a private stylist, and her clientele is built on referrals only. She offers so many different services and lives by her business motto, ‘Quality Hair Services Doesn’t Always Have To Be Expensive. While offering affordable services, she also finishes her services at incredible speed. “I remember being in Hair school, and the teacher told me that I would not make much money spending all day on someone’s hair. She taught me that fast, quality work would bring me more clients. I try not to offer services that go over 5 hours, but if I do, I charge accordingly. I used to hate sitting in a salon all day, hearing mess, and have 5 of us show up at the same time to receive service from the same stylist. I don’t want to be that way. I want the stereotype of African American salons to change. I’m only one person, but that’s all it takes, and maybe more will fall in line.”

Ms. Washington’s never-ending desire to be her best, give her best and live her best, is what drives her business success. Her children are the force behind her strength today. “My kids are my world. They helped me to go on even when I don’t want to. I’m so blessed to have my babies and will work hard everyday to make them proud.”

COLORADO BLACK BEAUTY ENTREPRENEURSHIP GROUP

FOUNDED BY DJ WASHINGTON

The Colorado Black Beauty & Entrepreneur Facebook Page & Group was established in 2016. The group was originally established as a networking group for Colorado hairstylists and barbers. The founder of the group, DJ Washington, was an established stylist in the Colorado Springs area. Colorado stylists would promote on Craigslist and other social media outlets throughout the years, but potential clients new to the area would still have problems finding minority stylists and barbers. With the advice and support of her husband, who passed away in 2017, DJ Washington started the group.

It watched it go from a hair group to one of

the largest Facebook networking pages for African Americans Businesses in Colorado.

The group strives to support, educate and promote minority businesses in Colorado.

As the page continues to grow, the standards on which professionals promote themselves have grown as well. The page has reached people’s attention from every walk of life and also helps those who need mentorship in the betterment of small businesses in the Colorado African American Community.

Every type of business in the African American Colorado community is on this page and welcomes anyone to promote, ask questions, and leave respectable comments.

With so much division in the African American community, it is always a plus to have a positive outlet to express OUR creativity.

How did you start, and how long have you been doing it?

What is the biggest lesson you have learned when running a beauty business?

In 2017, I had $350 in my bank account.

I spent almost all of it on my first set of inventory - jewelry to sell at Brothers Jeff ’s Black Dollar Saturday event and local festivals. A year and a half later, my car containing all my stock - was stolen. But with a $500 donation, I was able to start again.

In less than two years, I built my own store.

Now I’ve expanded to a new showroom, and the product types and quality have expanded even beyond my own vision.

Every day I am motivated by my sons to be all I can be, in order to show them it is possible.

It’s no different with a beauty business. The biggest takeaway that I can give is, if you can see a vision for a better future, then do everything in your power to make it real.

Tell us about the impact you are making in the community and around the world?

Sankofic Gems is a local African fashion and accessories outlet. Our goal is to educate about Africa’s contribution, cultures, history, and significance while enhancing attire with high-quality, handmade, African products. In addition, we work to provide permanent employment for communities living in rural Nairobi, Kenya.

Since its beginning, women have been the face of the fashion and accessories industry and the producers and consumers of products. Yet despite this, the fashion industry has been and remains maledominated. Sankofic Gems creates a special space for women of African ancestry to produce an income using their talents and build a lasting economic base and not have a seat at the table but to build our own.

“This is Women’s Work” is our promise to remain 100% black-women-owned.

In Africa, I connected with two beautiful rising entrepreneurs, Khadija and Jackie, who created their companies as platforms to give others in their communities a way to earn an income. They’re artisans that make jewelry, skilled seamstresses, and leaders among women in their communities. They hire and train each of their workers personally, in addition to investing in the talents of each person working with them. Each purchase goes directly to support these people.

Our goal is to create flexjobs, jobs that are flexible. These are jobs designed for mothers or those with disabilities. I realized the need for this when my son began having seizures, and with every seizure came a job loss. That’s just unfair. So rather than get rid of my best workers due to reasons beyond their own control, I give them the space and time to take care of pressing issues without their job being in jeopardy.

As a black woman, how do you define beauty? How does our view of ourselves and how we define our beauty affect how we carry ourselves, and how we interact with the world around us?

As a beauty business specializing in African accessories, the goal is to make people more beautiful with our products and educate them about the origins and cultural significance of these products, enabling them to shine from within. Beauty comes from confidence and love of yourself, and that comes from understanding your history and the power and wisdom of your ancestors. This is why it is so important to root our view of beauty in our understanding of our own past and in our ancestor’s ability to triumph over challenges.

Is there anything thing else that you what to share with our audience?

We have recently started our own designer clothing line. Our first fashion show, which will be a mixture of history and fashion and based on the Kikuyu people of Kenya, will be on August 7th, 2021, at the Afrik Impact event at the Levitt Pavilion in Denver. That day, my second black history children’s book, “All Things African: A to Z,” will also be released with a stage reading.

These situations where cultural relevancy and understanding could have prevented certain students from escalating to the point of suspension are very common.

Imagine being a young Black girl having experienced great trauma in your life, including family turmoil; almost losing your life at the hands of your own mother. To say the least, the school environment is a challenge, and when it comes to certain rules against wearing bandanas and hoodies, well, that is not high on your priority list.

Boys as young as four years old ask their parents to cut their hair because of the comments from classmates pointing out how their hair is *different*.

Young girls by 2nd grade identifying themselves as having straight hair despite the curls growing naturally from their scalp.

High schoolers are covering their heads with hoodies on a bad hair day.

Being Curly in a Colorado classroom is no easy feat.

Pink bandanas, beads at the ends of braided hairstyles, and headwraps, curly/ coily/afro/loc’d children in Colorado schools have previously been subjected to discriminatory dress code policies and disciplinary actions based on their hairstyles.

Charter schools, innovation, and public schools with dress codes all have ideologies where everyone looks the same in a uniform, eliminates the hierarchy of “cool” based on clothes. But for the Black girl who towers over her peers and didn’t get all of her hair braided the weekend before, well, a bright pink bandana and a hoodie covering her hair, is precisely the solution regardless of the rules.

Fortunately, we have educators, programming and the Crown Act to advocate for policies and create safe spaces for our young, Black and curly students to be able to learn in classrooms where their academic achievement and social-emotional well-being will be more important than appearance every day.

The Crown Act was supported by Leslie Herod, Janet Buckner and Rhonda Fields.

It protects against hair discrimination in the workplace, in Colorado, school districts are being held to the same standard.

Resources available to our young curlfriends include the Curls on the Block App, providing a directory of curl-friendly stylists, online educational programming using hair and beauty to explore STEM, and challenges to engage users and build self-esteem.

The app is available on iOS and Play Store with both free and VIP levels.

You refuse to remove your hoodie at the request of your teacher, and after multiple unsuccessful requests, disciplinary reinforcement was brought in. Your hoodie is removed only to reveal the bright pink bandana. Of course, this was out of dress code.

This outdated and prejudiced policy of bandana coverings being associated with gangs impacted this young Black girl who was simply not having a good hair day and used her resources to avoid humiliation.

Situations like these require care and understanding for all parties involved--sadly, the student is usually at the short end of the experience.

NAOMI GRAHAM | OLYMPIC BOXER Interview By DJ Washington Edited By Tina Adams Olympian boxer, Naomi Graham is no stranger to hard work and has a dynamic strength both inside and outside of the ring.

In sitting down with Naomi, she eloquently described the beauty of boxing and what it means to her, as well as the balance of maintaining the physical and mental strength that is needed to bring home the victory, which she is determination to do.

it can also be let down if I go somewhere or, you know, when I put my makeup on. I tried to pick something a little more versatile, my sister had gotten locks a while ago and I liked the style. It’s very convenient. I don’t have to worry about it or anything while I’m training.

How is it adjusting to fame?

How are you feeling going into it?

I used to get very nervous and shy, but I told myself to speak from the heart and answer the questions truthfully. Often, I get out of the ring, I’m breathing hard, and this camera is in my face; I tell myself to take a deep breath. They want to follow my journey and know my story. I feel like I’ve gotten a lot of experience with being on camera leading up to the Olympics so, I think when I get there, I’ll stop and give everybody their time and then go back to my meditation in order to put myself back in the mode to compete.

I’m nervous, but I’m ready at the same time to knock some heads off. Lol!

Do you have somebody you look up to or a fighting style that you mimic?

How was doing the photo shoot and being on the cover?

I take something from each one. I watch male and female fighters. I watch mostly pro boxing, and I feel like each one has something that I can take from it. I love Ann Wolf. She is legendary, and she was somebody that was pretty much knocking every female out that she got in the ring with. But I pretty much take something from different boxers that I like to watch because they all have strong points.

How long have you been boxing?

I’ve been boxing for seven years, and I feel great. I’ve been working so hard since 2016, when I lost for the first time at the Olympic trials, I said that I would be determined this time and I would be an Olympian.

It was a great experience because that’s something that I’ve always wanted, believe it or not. I auditioned for modeling and stuff when I was younger. I just wasn’t able to get into the school. So, it brought me back a little bit to what I wanted to do at first, and I feel beautiful.

How do you balance out being an athlete and changing your style? Why did you choose locks?

Well, we have to make sure our hair is compact because it has to fit under the headgear. But Pg. 18 | Hair, Beauty & Hygiene

Do you get excited when you meet people you look up to?

Olympics if we get that opportunity---I’m pretty sure it’s going to come out.

Do you wear makeup in your sport?

I choose not to show that side when it comes to boxing. I’m in a male dominant sport, and they already look at us a certain way. Things already aren’t equal between males and females, so I don’t feel the need to come up in the gym with makeup and eyeliner. I feel like I have to show that more aggressive side when I’m around the sport.

Do you want to compete professionally after the Olympics?

It’s still up in the air. I always told myself that my goal was the Olympics, which I wanted to do. I wanted to show people you can come from not having much to being an Olympian. And I never really had a passion for being a professional boxer. If you’re not passionate about something, you shouldn’t do it because you could get hurt. And the pro game is a little different. The pro game is more business and promotion marketing, stuff like that. And I want to box and go to the Olympics. That’s really what I want to do.

Tell us three things about you that you want everybody to know?

I love to sing. I love to dance. I wanted to be a backup dancer growing up. I wanted to go to the School of Arts, but of course, I wasn’t able to because of finances. I love riding horses, and I’m an animal lover.

Bruce | When I was at my last Barbershop, Su was the last barber we hired, post covid.

Some things happened, some decisions had to be made, and we decided to leave the shop.

I was going to do my own thing, but Su had reached out to me and said he found a new location. He was like, “I need you to come to check this location out.” I was like, “ I just got out of a partnership and not sure how I feel about jumping into another one.” He replied, “Just come talk to me, and if you’re not feeling it, we can both just do our own thing.” My mama told me, “ain’t nothing wrong with going to talk.” So I met up with Su, and we got to see the spot. Su was talking to me and saying, “Bruce, this spot can’t fail. if we do what we’re supposed to do, it can’t fail.” I prayed about it, and within 48 hours of filling out the application, we got approved. From there, it’s just been straight grinding, promoting, and building the team we currently have. That’s how Faded & Braided Barbershop came about.

Sudana | We are a One-Stop shop for men, women and children. Our clients can sit in our braider’s chairs and when they are complete with their service, jump into the barber’s chair to get faded to complete the overall look.

You are two strong African American men partnering with each other. How did you all make that work?

same frequency play a major part in making this work. When you meet people and realize they’re vibrating off the same frequency as you, it makes the atmosphere positive. I use that to help gauge who I should engage within business partnerships, networking and the people I choose to surround myself with.

Do you have any suggestions for the man who may be having dry skin and stuff ?

Sudana| I would say first and foremost; you’ve got to stay hydrated based on the highlevel altitude that’s in Colorado. Secondly, keep your hair moisturized with some kind of “leave-in” conditioner. Make sure you use it more frequently than you normally would Bruce | Don’t wash your hair every day because it is going to dry out. Come up with a routine that works best for your hair.

We understand everybody’s hair textures are different. We also do our best to research different products in order to make the best recommendations that will help our clients.

We do professional consultations before and during the service. We also educate our clients on the products that we’re using so they can recreate their specific hairstyle once leaving the shop.

What makes your shop stand out from the rest?

Bruce | First and foremost, I want to say there are many great barbershops in Colorado Springs, and they all do great work.

What makes us stand out from everyone else is that when you walk into Faded & Braided Barbershop, whether it’s your first time or you’re a repeat client, you are always treated like family. The environment of the shop is welcoming and family-oriented. When you come in, every barber in the shop is greeting you. As professionals, we feel it’s important to establish a relationship with our clients from the get-go.

Sudana | I would say it’s the Vibe. We have a different energy when you walk in the door. Our shop vibe is more linked to our individual personalities, which creates an overall positive atmosphere in the shop not just for our barbers but our clients as well.

When people come into our establishment, they feel that Vibe immediately at the door.

How do you stay grounded when dealing with so many people and personalities?

Sudana | What keeps me level-headed is having daily affirmations. I have affirmations that I say to myself in the morning. I have affirmations that I say to myself at night.

I read books to keep my mind in tune. I do a lot of personal care to keep my head level when dealing with so many different personalities daily.

What is the first thing someone should do if they are considering getting a wig?

You should definitely do a consultation so that you and your stylist are both on the same page, making sure that you have the correct texture for your need at the moment.

I always encourage the stylists to discuss the price because wigs and weaves are a delicacy.

And it’s not something that you have to have.

It’s just like a man having a red Corvette.

This is our toy as a woman. A lot of women need it for different medical purposes. But some women have hair down to their rump, and they are still braiding that hair up and weaving. It’s very expensive. You always want to let your clients know that it’s an expensive game. You don’t want someone to come and feel like they can get a lower grade hair, you can get the lower grade hair, but you’re going to get less of a result. I’ve had many people just really get hyped up about what they see on social media. And when they come to find out what it is about breaking it down to the actual melt, the tinting of the lace, and what it takes to make a really good weave come to life for a really good wig, It’s working; it’s time, and it’s money. But in the end, it can be just a dream. You can be so versatile. You can be Suzy, or you can be Karen, or you can be Beyonce.

Beauty Studios carries nice ways closures, Janet Perrault has nice closures. Taylor Ellis has nice closures; you want to have a good closure. Closures are going to run you $100 or more. I don’t recommend that you get one that comes with the hair because you’re making it basically impossible for us to customize it. It needs to be thinned down in the front so that it looks natural. You pull up these ads on Facebook, and it looks just perfect, like it’s their hair. They all come like that. That’s unrealistic. There’s one company that sells wigs on Facebook, and the wigs are just beautiful, but they don’t come like that.

These people are pulling them right out of the box, and they put it right in your hand.

The truth is that they have to be customized first. A lot of people are coming in with false expectations. You have to do your homework and consult with a good stylist before you come in. I don’t want anyone to be disappointed. It takes work, and it also takes maintenance.

What makes you stand out that?

I’m 35 years into doing hair and Cosmetology.

I think that builds up the reputation that I have because I really do love what I do. I

love my people. I care about you, and how you feel when you leave here, how you go out into the world and look people directly in the eye and say, “I am all that.” To do that, you have to really care about what you do and how you do it. I don’t want anybody walking out of my salon feeling anything but beautiful. It means everything to me. This is not about money. We all have to make a living. It’s very important that you consider the person in your chair, pretend as if it was you.

What advice you have for newcomers coming into the hair game.

I graduated from beauty school. I believe it was two people out of a class of 16 that still do hair. And the reason why is because they didn’t have the passion. You need to have passion. This is not something you can do for just money. You got to love it. If you want to be a lawyer, doctor, or counselor, it takes a lot of hours and time. It’s way beyond money. You gotta love it. It’s like cooking.

The best ingredient you can put in your meal is love, and if you don’t love doing hair, if you don’t love people, customer service, this is the wrong industry for you.

So what do you suggest for those people who need to be more cost-efficient?

You definitely want to find the lace closures.

How long have you been braiding hair and how did you get into it?

I started braiding at the age of 8 years old.

Being one of seven girls, I grew tired of waiting my turn to get my hair done. My older sister Jeanette was the neighborhood Stylist. I would watch her braid hair all the time. Although I attended cosmetology school in Oakland, California, I am a selftaught braider.

What are the top 3 most popular styles for braids and why do people love each style.

The top 3 styles my clients ask for are the Knotless braids, Goddess Box braids and Marley twist. Knotless braids are popular because they are absolutely pain free! Clients love a beautiful, sleek braid that is versatile and light weight. Goddess box braids give you a beautiful braid look with pizazz. Adding a variety of curl patterns coupled with braids allows for a day or night look. Marley twist last forever, no kidding. If you love a natural look, light weight hair and longevity, marley twist are your go to.

What are a few reasons that people should consider braids.

One should consider braids because they are beautiful, versatile and your styling options are limitless. Healthy, stress free braids will also promote hair growth.

How long do different braid styles last and why?

Senegalese Twist - large 2-3 weeks if cared for properly and medium 4 weeks if cared for properly, Small 6-8 weeks if cared for properly.

Cuban/ Marley Twist (Cuban twist hair) Large 6 weeks, medium 8-10 weeks, small 12 weeks if cared for properly you can wash the twist as well. The kinky hair last forever!!!

You literally must force yourself to take the twist down!

Box braids - large 4weeks, medium 6 weeks, small 8weeks maybe 10 if cared for properly.

Goddess Box braids - if synthetic hair (freetress) is used for the leave out hair, you will see tangling within 2 weeks. If human hair is used, you will get regular Box braid times mentioned above.

Spring twist - small 6-8 weeks if cared for properly.

Faux locs - large 6 weeks, Medium 8 weeks, Small 10 weeks (if synthetic hair is used for goddess locs it will tangle and make the style Look a bit messy before it is time) human hair is recommended although expensive.

Crochet - basic crochet 6 weeks Crochet weave - 4 weeks depending on the hair you use.

This information is based on my personal experience alone. However, based on the stylist and personal Execution, pricing and longevity will vary.

How do you take care of your hair to prep for braids, while in braids and when you remove braids When you show up to your appointment with Braids by Kisha, I require my clients to have their hair, shampooed, detangled, dried and ready to braid. If a client does not wish to shampoo, detangled, and dry their hair, I do offer those services for an additional fee.

I do prefer my clients to schedule in advance to insure we schedule enough time execute services. While braids are in, I suggest that my clients use a dry shampoo to clean their scalp. I am not a fan of fully submerging braids in water as drying them properly could be an issue. Removal of braids can be simple or time consuming depending on each individual skill level. I suggest using a healthy amount of conditioner and oil to moisturize your hair before coming through your hair after a complete braid take down.

This procedure will insure the least amount of hair loss and the least amount of strain while detangling.

What are price the ranges that people charge for braids for different styles & why.

Pricing will always be up to the braid professional providing services. There really is not a “price range”. It is my earnest belief each Braid professional should charge according to skill level, style difficulty, and Self-worth.

What styles are best for sports?

When it comes to sports, I believe you should wear cornrows or light weight knotless braids, and box braids.

What are top 3 thing people need to do to manage locs well?

What do you do and why do you do it?

I am a master loctician officially for three years now. I started at the age of nine braiding, obtaining my cosmetology license in 2009 and receiving my instructors certification in 2016. I chose to specialize in locs due to the infatuation with natural hair and the versatility and depths of spirituality locs possess.

How long have you been doing locs and how dis you get started?

Locs were incorporated into my services in 2014 due to the demand of those requesting retwists. I was only into braids at the time so I began researching the different techniques and how caring for locs were different than caring for loose natural hair. From there I never looked back. The ability to contour “matted” hair into art and realizing the misconceptions and miseducation of Locs were my open door to change the narrative for our culture.

What are 3 things people should consider before getting locs?

The main three factors before determining if locs are for you are knowing desired partings, size and understanding current health of the hair. Making sure they are themselves educated on the locking process per method desired.

Top three things required to manage healthy locs are a hydration, moisture and Protein balance.

How long do locs last and what are the different styles?

There is no definite time frame on how long locs last. Locs are the extension of you and the culture that cannot be unearthed. As long as you have a healthy regimen, a loctician who follows up and monitors your loc journey or even doing so yourself the possibilities are endless for growth. Longevity of loc styles depends on the style itself, home maintenance/lifestyle choices and the overall health of the hair. For exampleTwo barell rolls may last only two weeks for someone active whereas rope twists you can style and wear for a week then allow the ropes to hang for two to three weeks and you will have crinkles for another week or two.

How does colorado weather impact locs?

Due to Colorado lacking humidity it is a task keeping locs moisturized. Locs being prone to dryness and now being in an environment where there is little to no moisture in the air, creating a proper regimen for hydration and moisture is detrimental to healthy locs. Many people think water and oil are moisturizers and reality is oil and water have never mixed.

Water only dampens the hair by allowing the cuticle to open with warmer water or close with cooler water. Oil seals, Neither moisturizes.

However how you apply these products can change the health of the locs. Mist, moisturize and seal. Mist by either spraying the locs with water or allowing water to mist from the shower. Moisturize- Finding a product that is the same consistency as slightly watered down cake mix, not watery but not too thick. This will allow the product to penetrate and create moisture retention. I prefer taliah wajiid bodifier mist. Finally sealHere is where your light oils will be used to lock in the moisture that was applied. Too much and too heavy oils will have an adverse reaction and dry the locs out. Doing so twice at least twice a week will help combat environmental setbacks.

What are some reasons people decide to get locs?

Others want to join the trend and a thing to do. The last third group honestly just doesnt want to do their hair. No matter what style of loc, natural loose or shaved route people choose to do with their manes there is always a level of maintenannce. I am a 28 year old wife, mom, and self made CEO. At 13, in Akron Ohio, I began doing nails as a hobby. I became quite passionate after countless visits to the nail salon with my mom. I also have a visual art background so nail art became a great way for me to combine my love of nails and art together. At 15, in high school, I attended cosmetology school. To my surprise, and disappointment the program I was in did not teach acrylic nails at all. I did not let that stop me. I continued the program and continued to teach myself outside of school. By 17 I had obtained my cosmetology license, and started mastering my craft. After high school I attended college but eventually realized my nail career would always be my “Plan A,” and not the backup plan so many made it out to be. Soon after, my husband joined the army, and it was time to take Prissy Bee cross country.

At Prissy Bee “We are passionate about your pampering!” I chose this tag line because I want every client to feel exclusive, while receiving long lasting quality services. For so long women have been used to going to nail salons, paying top dollar for mediocre nails, and leaving unsatisfied.

In the past 10 years black artists have completely flipped the nail industry in its head. We’ve created a space for women to feel educated, empowered, and unapologetic

about their self care. We as women can sometimes get caught up in the daily grind.

This can cause us to lose site of the things that make us feel pretty. I take pride in knowing I’ve helped a woman feel good and regain a piece of of her self through a set of nails. Women should feel good about doing the things that make them feel feminine and sexy.

I just want to continue to help women recognize the goddess within them. Doing nails helps me do that. Not only do I get to impact women via nail services, but I also get to pour into aspiring nail artists through nail classes and mentorship. My business has grown so much since arriving in Colorado, and I can’t wait to see how we grow in the future.

Being a Army Wife and has given me the opportunity to live, teach, and slay nails in states including Texas, Hawaii, and currently Colorado. We’re Hub for all hair types, whether you are natural, chemically processed, or whether you need to protect the style to protect your natural hair. We’re a One-Stop shop for all those things.

Our signature service is the rose silk treatment, which is our spin On the silk press. We prepare the hair well to receive the heat. That’s necessary for a silk press. The basis of a silk press is always heat intention.

Before we go and put all that heat on the hair and provide that tension, we make sure that we offer steam treatments, have protein treatments, have deep penetrating masks, and shine treatments that complement the silk press. Our product line caters to that also.

Consultations are extremely important Because clients’ expectations don’t always equal reality. It will save you so much time when you are doing a service. If you get a client that you’ve never met, and they come in, and they say, “I want my hair to look just like this.” If you have never seen their hair before then, you can’t guarantee something that you have not done—so being able to bring them in for a consultation even if they are coming in about 15 minutes before the service. You can examine the hair and give them options for what you can offer going forward. We can build our way up to the style that they want. That is especially important because Colorado is such a revolving door.

We have people that are coming from all different types of climates and different states. They had different hair types. If we skip the process of getting to know the client and snow their hair, we are putting things on there that are not compatible with what they’re trying to achieve. So, consultations are the foundation for every Client stylist

relationship. If you skip a consultation, you’re doing a disservice to yourself and your client.

Tell us about your product line?

Our product line is called the Dear Madam Signature Collection, and our leading product line is the Royal silkening treatment, the perfect foundation for any style. Whether you are going into a protective style, your hair naturally curly, preparing your hair to be pressed, chemically treated, the royal silencing treatment. But the main thing that it is good for is preparing your hair for heat.

It comes equipped with a shampoo and conditioner, leave-in, a 10 in 1 treatment, and shine spray. All of our products have a heatprotecting agent in them, preparing your hair for heat from the beginning.

Tell us three things about your salon that would make somebody choose you?

I’m a professional luxury makeup artist.

Painting faces is therapeutic for me. I do this because it makes me happy to see other women smile and feel good about themselves. It also helps me stay up to date on the latest fashion and trends. I’ve met so many amazing people in the industry. It’s also a really neat way to network.

How did you start your beauty business?

I use to be a majorette back in my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. We used to dress up and put on makeup and perform all across the country, and I missed that. Once I moved to Colorado after graduating high school, I didn’t know many people here, so I stayed home bored, and I begin to play in makeup and grew a real love for it. Once the pandemic began, I quit my clock in job and turned my hobby into my career. Fall of 2020, The Jungle Look was born.

I taught myself back in 2016, and I made it my career two years ago! One key lesson I’ve learned is to have over-the-top great customer service. I like making my clients feel welcomed and relaxed, almost like a spa.

That’s where the tropical setting comes from.

What has helped you grow your business?

Strategic planning has become my best friend. It allows me to think about my goal Pg. 36 | Hair, Beauty & Hygiene

and what steps I need to take to achieve it. To ensure a successful business, I have to wear multiple hats and adapt to change. First, I have to be a good leader and set an example of what I want people to see my business as.

I need to have a good attitude at all times.

I need proper money management skills to keep my inventory flowing. Also, I have to always be ready to network locally with anybody to promote my business word of mouth. Slowly but surely, my clientele began to grow, and I even picked up returning loyal customers along the way.

What are some makeup beauty tips that you can share with us?

Skincare is very important. Your skin is the blank canvas. You want it to be smooth and ready for a proper makeup application.

It’s always important to have healthy skin hygiene. We don’t want to clog up our pores with products. It will cause the skin to break out. Exercising is a great way to promote healthy skincare. It will help your skin become more durable towards the natural environment and sweat out unwanted body toxins. People should not wear makeup for longer than a full day because it can cause unwanted skin breakouts.

When looking for makeup, people have to understand that not everything works for everybody. Some products will cause your face or eyes to break out, so you have to adjust your makeup routine. It takes a while to find what is for you. It’s a handson learning experience that you have to keep practicing to be good at.

Safety and health are most important. I have to keep a steady hand, while working to ensure not to poke the client in the eyes.

I also have to make sure I am not using products that may be too harsh to the client.

I have to be very gentle when applying lashes so that I won’t damage the client’s eyes or natural lashes. Even after a makeup application, you want to clean your lashes to remove old makeup and other products.

This will ensure a longer-lasting lash set.

What do your clients say they like about your business?

One client said that it was the most professional setup she’s ever witnessed.

She described it as being a “mini Sephora” right in her own home. She also stated how important it made her feel and that she would love to take a self-care day more often. Clients also tend to comment on the decor and the candles that I burn. I believe in holistic healing as well. I open a window and sage before I begin, then I’ll burn a wick candle for aromatherapy.

How do you define beauty as a black woman?

As a black woman, I define beauty as not only looks but a good heart and soul. Being kind to one another is good for the heart.

It can reduce the daily challenges and stress, and it can also prevent illness and help you live a longer, positive life. It cost nothing to tell another black woman how beautiful she is. There are not that many of us out here in the state of Colorado, so I feel that we should be uplifting one another. I come from the south, and it’s a blessing to be here in a vibrant city. Things are much different back home, so I don’t ever complain. I feel we should support one another and spread love and knowledge to expand our thinking methods.

BEING BLACK

IN CORPORATE AMERICA WRITTEN BY

KALILAH ANDERSON lack of diversity in professional executive settings?

When starting at a professional office with naturally styled hair, the initial reception can be revolutionary particularly if the majority of co-workers are white and unaccustomed to working alongside people of color. It is revolutionary because as a Black person we are hyper aware of how we are viewed and the stereotypes that precede us. This is compounded by the seemingly strict rules of professionalism. Typically getting past the initial roadblocks our names may create on resumes and cover letters is one aspect of our fight to enter corporate America.

Another fight once we land the interview, is the debate on how to wear our hair in the first meeting and subsequent days after.

Entering Corporate America in a white dominated society as a Black person is no minor feat and that alone can be applauded.

Too often we are reminded that we must be twice as good as our counterparts to be accepted, acknowledged and let in the room.

When it comes to a Black person’s fit in corporate culture, often efforts are doubled

by Black people to fit in with the clean-cut image desired by corporations. In order to get a seat at the executive table, Black people often must fall in line with expected behavior and appearances so that more opportunities become accessible. It is an unspoken part of our contract to conform and adapt to corporate culture so there are no extra obstacles hindering our trajectory. Corporate culture is often implied, not expressly defined, and develops naturally over time from the collective traits of the people the company hires. So imagine the kind of culture that has developed as a result of a Pg. 38 | Hair, Beauty & Hygiene

When we appear in our natural hair, there is a lot being stated without being stated. In large part, we are asking to be recognized as we are for the talents and abilities that made the company interested in us to begin with. We are setting the tone for how we are most comfortable and therefore will be most productive. Black people can feel confident in the talents and abilities they individually possess but feel uncomfortable having to put on a mask or costume to appease others.

Yet there are too many off-record stories and anecdotes where a mask had to be worn, a hairstyle had to be changed or an accent had to be subdued lest the position that was worked hard be taken away.

A lot of times we are not ready for that fight even though it is an inevitable part of our lives. As Black people, so often we just want to go to work, do our job and come home.

We are not expecting to be the ambassadors

for the Black community simply because we went from a sew-in to cornrows or starter locs. But that is a position we find ourselves in when dealing with corporate culture; having to negotiate who may want to touch our hair or the off-brand comment. For many, that can make them nervous that we will challenge the office culture that has gone unchallenged because of a lack of diversity and representation. Some places are ready for that change, so many others are not.

Paul Mooney’s statement that “If your hair is relaxed; they are relaxed. If your hair is nappy; they are not happy! Is a cute take on the reality many Black people still face every morning when they are tying their tie and smoothing their locs or adjusting the hemline of their skirt while fixing their wig. Will I be successful today based off my merit and not my hairstyle? Will I be valued for the pride I hold in myself and my culture? Conformity is a crutch and a bitch, no matter how you view it and to dismantle thoughts of antiblackness requires active engagement before it gets better.

So in 2021, the fight continues. When we slick our edges, retwist our locs and pat down our fros, we step into our battlegear and prepare for the right to be seen, heard and respected.

When we dominate professional settings in our natural hairstyles and protective styles we honor our ancestors, our foremothers and forefathers who fought for the right to be seen, heard and respected based on their integrity and character.

JOCELYN MACCSKILL Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I love jewelry. One day I found something on the internet and had the idea that I could make that myself. I went out to the store and purchased some beads and all the other supplies I needed, even though I had no idea what I was doing. I made that one bracelet, and that turned into thousands of bracelets. Then I realized I really had something going. My family encouraged me to keep going, so that’s what I did. I kept practicing, and I got a little bit better day by day. All of this was inspired by several other ladies that have been doing the same thing. I thought I’d just put my own little spin on it.

What are your most popular products?

Why do people love them?

My most popular products are the men’s collection of bracelets and necklaces.

When I started, I made bracelets strictly for women; then, I began making them for men.

CHERIECE PETERSON laboratory. I’ve learned the chemistry of certain ingredients, organic chemistry, and things like that. I had a basic knowledge of some of the things, and being able to research on my own, just you made me feel a whole lot better about the purity of my natural product.

What are your most popular products and why do people love them?

Why did you start your business?

I started my business initially because there was a lack of affordable products at the time. I was transitioning my hair from wearing a relaxer to being natural, and because I have a large family, I couldn’t afford any good products. I went to YouTube and started researching how I could make some basic products. One of my coworkers was like, “Well, I’ll buy some from you.” And I said, “Really? Okay!”

The most popular ones are the ones that I customize. Those are the buttercream and the butter scrub. I usually offer those in hair and body gift sets. Each gift set is customizable. My customers love to be able to choose their own scent that is all-natural.

My customers love to customize the buttercream with different herbs or oils, and they love to have a customized label on the lid or on the product. Bringing them something that is more personal and customized is an

amazing feeling, and they truly love that.

What was one of the most important lessons you’ve learned while running your business?

That it’s hard. Being a business owner is hard. It’s not just about making products and selling them. There’s so much more that goes into it. You have to think about meeting customer’s expectations all the time and to be able to pivot if something isn’t working right. It can be overwhelming.

Being flexible and knowing that taking care of a business is almost like taking care of a baby. It requires a lot of attention, and that it’s harder than it looks and seems.

She was my first customer, and then it just evolved from there. I just wanted to have something that worked for my hair and my family’s hair and skin. It just opened up a whole new world for me. Most products have way too many chemicals inside of them.

I started researching labels, and I started looking at the chemicals and the ingredients and said, “Why is that even in there? What is that?” Knowing that my product is natural gave me confidence and peace of mind.

After researching different ingredients, I became reluctant. I said, “I don’t even know what this is.” So I would research to see what they do? Why is it in there? I would see it in so many different products, even those that claimed to be all-natural.

The idea for PureLee Redefined was formed when I began to notice aging changes in my skin that I was not willing to accept. I think my mother is one of the most beautiful women in the world but I did not want to look like that yet. I wanted to look more refreshed and remain natural appearing. I did not want to feel like I needed to cover flaws with foundations nor concealer as I prefer my skin breathe and not be occluded.

Therefore, I began seeking consultations regarding non-invasive, medically safe solutions for my issues performed by medical professionals since I knew complications could arise. Immediately, I noted that most of the facilities did not have physicians on site nor performing most of the aesthetic services. I felt uncomfortable knowing that should any complications occur, there was not a medical provider who could intervene.

Furthermore, the responses that I was receiving repeatedly around town revealed a generalized discomfort in caring for skin of color. It also revealed some underlying racial bias and marginalization intrinsic within the skin classification system and the treatment Pg. 46 | Hair, Beauty & Hygiene

we receive when searching for services.

No one assessed how my skin responds to sun exposure, heat, nor to inflammation.

They simply made assumptions because I am African American. Because of these assumptions, I was advised repeatedly to first condition my skin with harsh products for 3 months before I could have any treatments done. This meant pre-emptively treating a condition I did not have with products that could lead to inflammation and irritation and do so without my concerns being addressed.

I did not find this acceptable so I researched medical aesthetics and found a multitude of training opportunities. Dr. Marvin and I had been practicing primary care for almost 20 years in a variety of settings so we more than qualified and capable to do so. Initially we planned to just do our own treatments at home. However, it became quite obvious that the market had a void which we could address with our medical knowledge and aesthetic skills from which many people would benefit. Thus, the Med Spa was born.

PureLee Redefined is focused on solutions that are safe in all skin types, that are

minimally to non-invasive, and that have little to no downtime. We place the utmost value on all of our clients, therefore, we strive to make guests feel comfortable and well informed. We concentrate on solutions that are scientifically sound, have lasting results and are natural appearing. Our offerings have been clinically researched and personally vetted by us. What are some things that you do with your clients to help them have healthier skin, or feel beautiful?

We offer injectables performed only by physicians using botox for wrinkle reduction as well a variety of dermal fillers to help restore volume loss primarily in the cheeks, lips, and under eye area. We also offer a variety of collagen induction therapies as well as skin rejuvenation and resurfacing strategies such as microneedling, peels, and HydraFacials. These services are highly customizable and result in better hydration, color, tone, and texture of the skin. We have included options for a variety of price points so there is something for everyone. We love helping people get their skin ready for special occasions such as weddings, vacations, professional appearances. Skin glows when it is healthy and you can see people glowing from the inside out and boosting with confidence. All of our offerings are geared toward restoring your skin to its best state of health.

For those just looking for daily skin care we offer medical grade products that work and that fit your lifestyle. We carry 3 skin care lines available only to physicians: ZO Skin Health, Sente, and AnteAge as well as some prescription strength products for acne and hyperpigmentation. We educate you on the lines and help you select what is best for you. We dispel myths regarding products and treatments since there is so much misleading marketing in the cosmeceuticals industry and we focus on preventative strategies and products. Our goal is to be a trusted partner and source of expertise.

We offer permanent fat reduction solutions, head to toe skin tightening, facial remodeling, and muscle toning. These are great options for those who want to feel and look better in their clothes as well as increase functionality in activities of daily life or improve athletic performance. These services are also great for women who are 6 weeks or more postpartum seeking to get their body back in shape.

We spend a great deal of time listening to our guest and we curate new offerings based upon problems that our clients have and when we notice gaps in what we currently offer. We are bringing in new technologies often and will be offering Morpheus8 for the body and face very soon.

How does the Colorado dry weather effect skin?

Colorado is such a beautiful state and we are honored to be able to call this home.

However, the proximity to the sun, the dryness, and the wind are very harsh on the skin. These environmental factors result in dryness, sensitivity, premature aging in the form of wrinkles, collagen loss, & pigment problems such as sun spots as well as leathery skin in more advanced cases. This environment also exacerbates conditions such as a melasma and rosacea not to mention the increase risk of skin cancer.

Sun protection to include hats, protective clothing, and sunscreen is imperative for all Coloradans as all people are vulnerable to these conditions.

What are products your recommend for skincare, and for what specific aspects of skincare?

We recommend a soap free gentle cleanser followed by an appropriate toner for your skin type be used morning and night. We also advise to use a gentle exfoliator 2-3 times a week. Everyone should also use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher in the morning and reapply mid-day. More frequent application is needed if swimming or sweating. It is important to note that most commercial sunscreens only last 4 hours and only protect against UV radiation (UVA and UVB).

Because of the reduction in the ozone layer and the high energy visible light emitted from all of our screens (mobile phones, computers, tablets, TV’s) it is best to seek a medical grade sunscreen which covers these forms of energy as well.

Prevention of aging should include a retinol or other vitamin a derivative and vitamin C. For melanated clients with pigment concerns, I like products that are gentle and contain niacinamide, arbutin, and tranexamic acid in addition to the above. At this point, most people remind me that I did not recommend a moisturizer. This is true because healthy skin is self-hydrating. We do recommend

adding hydrators if needed which contain hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans but always something that does not compromise the barrier function of the skin and that does not induce a negative feedback loop which compromises your own hydration.

Why do you think its important for people to feel good about how they look?

When people do not feel good about how they look, it affects their self-esteem which negatively impacts their emotional state and well-being. They often feel ashamed, despair, depressed or un-deserving. It literally holds people back from life experiences, career opportunities, and from taking risks. They don’t want to be seen and it breaks my heart. I have seen so many people limited by the way they perceive themselves and fail to reach the greatness inside them. I also believe that society values people based upon looks and, as such, society suffers because we may not benefit from the gifts of these individuals. Though beauty is only skin deep, confidence and courage are products of feeling good about the way you look.

What services do you offer?

For skin our offerings include: Dermal Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Revanesse Versa, Belotero).

Botox (Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin), SkinPen microneedling facial with stem cells or PRP, AnteAge microchanneling facial, AquaGold Facials, HydraFacials, Peels.

For the body our offerings include: Emsculpt muscle toning, Coolsculpting fat reduction, Evoke facial remodeling, Evolve skin tightening. Morpheus8 Body and Face which combines microneedling with radiofrequency for fractional resurfacing and collagen production.

As a black woman, how do you define beauty?

I define beauty as simplicity, authenticity, and grace. It is a way of being, love and light.

It is confident and unconcerned with what others think or feel. It is strength, resilience, and self - assurance.
