INTERVIEW WITH THE OWNER JOCELYN MACCSKILL
Why did you start your business?
I started my business because I love jewelry. One day I found something on the internet and had the idea that I could make that myself. I went out to the store and purchased some beads and all the other supplies I needed, even though I had no idea what I was doing. I made that one bracelet, and that turned into thousands of bracelets. Then I realized I really had something going. My family encouraged me to keep going, so that’s what I did. I kept practicing, and I got a little bit better day by day. All of this was inspired by several other ladies that have been doing the same thing. I thought I’d just put my own little spin on it.
What are your most popular products? Why do people love them?
My most popular products are the men’s collection of bracelets and necklaces. When I started, I made bracelets strictly for women; then, I began making them for men. My pieces get a really good response from the men. Men don’t have as many options out there as women, so when something is marketed for them, they love that. I started hitting up different barbershops around the city, and I would stop by on the weekends. It’s been a hit since then.
What is one of the most important lessons you learned running your own business?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is patience and consistency. I have to stay consistent. I have to remain relevant to stay in the game, and it takes a lot of patience. It has really tested my patience to be creative. The creativity part is something that I didn’t realize I had within myself until I create each bracelet. It’s not that easy to just put a bracelet together. It sounds like it is, but I have a story behind each piece I create.
What is the thing that you are most proud of when it comes to your business?
Oh, my goodness, everything! I’m so proud of every piece that I make. Getting feedback from my audiences, those that follow me on Facebook or Instagram, makes me so happy. Also, the support from my family and friends.
What one piece of advice would you give to your consumers?
One piece of advice that I would give to my consumers is; if there’s something that you feel in your heart that you want to do, don’t be afraid to do it. God gives you that instinct for a reason. He gave you that gift. When you discover that gift, unwrap it and go from there. I also want my consumers to know I make my bracelets for everyone and every occasion. I also create custom pieces. I get a lot of custom requests for different types of causes. I made one for sickle cell awareness and a tribute piece to celebrate the life of a loved one. I enjoy creating personalized custom pieces, so if there’s something you see on my website that inspires you, contact me, and I’ll do my best to create something special and unique for you.
