J-school:Yay or Nay?

Florida A&M University alumnus Will Ayers will never forget his experience during his undergraduate career. Many times, he often recalls his experience being delightful and meticulous, yet rewarding.

Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication, formerly known as the School of Journalism, Media and Graphic Arts is infamous for its rigorous course load. In retrospect, SJGC is also known for its ability to produce winning breeds.

Over a decade later, while being a Fall 2008 graduate, Ayers is still committed to FAMU. He aims to provide information on his journey through SJGC with the intent to create generational knowledge

Ayers said that his involvement on campus aided in his career path. He then highlights the activities that opened doors for him.

“Going through J-school was a great experience and a lot of lessons learned as well. I spent a lot of time at 90.5 as an on-air personality and eventually moved up to the sports director,” Ayers said. “I actually broadcast FAMU men's and women’s basketball games. I did a sports show called ‘Prime Time’ that was a daily update on all sports, locally and nationally.”

In addition, Ayers mentions his trials and tribulations. He emphasizes ways he might have gotten into many predicaments.

“Kenneth Jones is still there I'm pretty sure, he played an important role as well. I was in his TV News class and that was actually one of my lows because I used to spend a lot of time going out and doing my thing and not really being focused on school,” Ayers said. “I probably failed Kenneth Jone’s class four times, to be honest with you. It wasn’t because the class was difficult, it was pretty much all my fault because I was trying to go out and do my things on the side instead of doing what I needed to do.”

Despite the fact that Ayers faced a couple cons during his matriculation at FAMU, He states how his circumstances shifted his perspective on J-school.

“I really credit J-school with teaching me the ways of being a professional,” Ayers expressed. “I think there are a lot of dreams that I had before coming into J-school but there were a lot of bad tendencies that I had.”

According to Famu.edu, applications to attend Florida A&M University for the upcoming academic school year are due Nov.1.
