Attending a Historically Black College or University is all it took to ignite the flame of motivation for student Auriel Patton.

Auriel Patton, a third-year public relations scholar at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University always knew she’d have a solid support system. But she didn’t realize just how far they’d go once she came to college.

From the town of Edina, Minnesota to the “Highest of Seven Hills” in Tallahassee, FL, Patton recalls what her childhood was like before experiencing life at FAMU.

“Growing up was very fun for me. I was surrounded by an abundance of family and received lots of attention and love. I was the youngest child for 17 years of my life and I spent a lot of time traveling with my family and being spoiled by my mom and sister,” Patton said.

She proceeded to recount some of the hobbies from her childhood that brought her immense joy.

“As a child, I enjoyed reading, playing video games and playing outside,” Patton said.

Although Patton had a great childhood, she always knew college was part of her plan. She applauds her sister for setting the tone and allowing her to discover HBCU’s.

“Growing up, I always knew I wanted to go to college. When I was in middle school my sister left home to attend Howard University. I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps and attend HBCU. FAMU was not my first choice, however after weighing my options it was the best one,” Patton said.

Thus far, Patton has enjoyed every second of her collegiate experience at FAMU and realizes just how strong her support system really is.

“I am grateful for many things including life, family, my education and friends. I try not to take anything for granted, I thank God for it all,” Patton said.

While remaining focused on graduating on time, she highlights that she is always target-oriented. She then proceeds to reveal her plans after graduation.

“My goal is to go as far as I can in life. I never want to set any limitations on myself. Any dream I have I would like to chase it. I also have a goal of being happy. Peace and good mental health are a priority to me,” Patton said. “In the future, I see myself being very successful. Post graduation, I plan on obtaining my master’s degree.”
