Title: Succeeding through FAMU
As college students there are a number of obstacles that we face on a day-to-day basis. Whether it’s keeping up with our academics or building a career, the tasks seem endless.
There is no doubt that Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University constantly produces winning breeds. However, with nearly 10,000 students, it is easier to lose sight of your goals which makes it harder to succeed through FAMU, according to FAMU.edu.
Fortunately, Florida A&M University prides themselves on catering to the needs of their student body in order to ensure their success as current students and alumni.
The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) located on the third floor of FAMU’s Center for Access and Student Success (CASS) aims to provide students with the necessary resources to successfully land jobs and internships. Through resume coaching, mock interviews, career action plans and professional workshops, scholars are getting the help that they need one by one.
Khamaria Turner, a third-year architecture student said some of her challenges while being a college student. She then sheds light on the importance of having documents that are required to land jobs.
“As a first-generation college student, it was very hard for me to understand how important it was to spend time to perfect my resume, Turner said. “Because I didn’t have someone in my corner to provide that support to look over my resume and allow me to challenge my career choices, I missed a lot of opportunities.”
In addition to Turner highlighting the importance of perfecting your resume and investing in your career, she also mentions how having a lack of resources can affect students.
“I definitely believe that having a lack of resources has a role in landing internships or jobs,” Turner said. “Those of us without the exposure to certain things are greatly set back compared to those who were exposed to the resources. Because I didn’t have the tools, I had to jump through 100 extra hoops.”
Zahria Nelson, a third-year pre-physical therapy scholar said the Career and Professional Development Center has excellent attention to detail and prioritizes each student.
“Although I was a walk-in, they were very helpful and took me without an appointment, Nelson said. “When I went to the office we didn’t rush or anything, we went line by line and they also told me what needed to be corrected and provided me with extra resources for the future
Nelson continues to express her appreciation for the Career and Professional Development Center.
“The Career and Professional Development Center is an asset to FAMU, Nelson said. “I would highly recommend making use of your resources.”
The Career and Professional Development is located on the third floor of the CASS building in suite 309 and is open to serving FAMU students Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, please visit http://cpdcenter.famu.edu
