SOFIA TOSELLO | Voice
argentina
Sofia Tosello sang her first professional concert at the age of 8 in her hometown of Córdoba in the heart of Argentina. Tango, the best-known music of her homeland, has always been a part of her musical life. She remembers her father listening to it on the radio and her niñera singing tangos to her as a child. Jazz was also heard in the household, and to the north of the city was the fount of Argentinian folklore, with its zambas and chacareras. When she moved to New York in 1999, it was inevitable that she would encounter even more forms, both Latin American and worldwide. In 2009 she brought out an album, Alma y Luna (Sunnyside Records), that pulled these traditions together, prompting Jazz Times to write: “the purity of her voice is matched by the vibrancy of her emotional palette and inventiveness of her cross-cultural technique”. A year later, she collaborated with Julio Santillan on Un Instante, Tribute to Borges (JS Records), and in 2011 she and Yuri Juárez formed Tangolandó, which combines the tango of her homeland with the rhythms of Juárez’s native Perú. Tangolandó came out as an album in 2012 and has been performed at venues including Joe’s Pub, the Blue Note, and Lincoln Center in New York, Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, and Torquato Tasso in Buenos Aires. She has performed in tango shows as well as concerts, singing in Recuerdo Tango and Tango Connections: A Love Story by Mariela Franganillo and touring internationally with Polly Ferman’s Glamour Tango. She is attracted to tango because it lets her sing the way she talks in life. “The fullness and effective depth of Tosello’s interpretations,” writes one blogger, “remind me more forcefully with every hearing … that singing and acting are in some way sister arts, that less leads to more in each, and that tango is the drama and the tragedy of a life lived between nostalgia and hope” (osburnt.com). Her vocals have been heard on more than a dozen albums and at hundreds of live performances, the material ranging from jazz to ladino to Cuban son. In 2011 and 2012 she also taught vocal technique, jazz improvisation, music theory and Latin American rhythms and songs, at the Swarnaboohmi Academy of Music in Chennai, India, and in 2016 she was the vocal teacher at Tango for Musicians and Composers at Reed College. mbaw.org | 11

The
Quilt
A Living History of African American Music
ABOUT THE PROJECT | FILM, CONCERT, CURRICULUM The concept for The Quilt arose when MBAW Educational Director Caleb Gonzalez assessed needs from area teachers on which culture they wanted to study in the 2021-22 school year with our programs. At the height of U.S. racial tensions and the Black Lives Matter movement, teachers overwhelmingly expressed interest to bring African American culture inro the classroom. We soon realized the project’s importance, recognizing it could evolve into a full-fledged film. Under the directorial guidance of our Development Director and avid filmmaker Julya Jara, The Quilt saw new light not only as an educational video for students but as a feature-length documentary for our public audiences. Julya led the charge and discovered Cynthia Freeman Gibbs, the film’s screenwriter and one of the two main actors, and Dr. Aaron Prado, the film’s head music advisor and soundtrack composer. The film portrays Aunt Cynthia, a music history buff who helps her niece Lauren discover music genres borne of African American culture. They unravel a history of music through songs of slavery, Negro Spirituals, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Harlem Renaissance, Gospel, Civil Rights, Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop. Cynthia inspires Lauren’s curiosity about history, igniting love and pride for her culture by relating it to her contemporary interests. The layers of a quilt are also used to explain how African American music of the past connects to current music, using historical examples to peel back layers of human experience over time. With the help of the cast and crew, local musicians, and partnerships with Carver Community Cultural Center, African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio, Texas Public Radio, and San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum, filming finished mid-2021 and will premiere early 2023. The Quilt has now spread to many of our different programming efforts be it educational, community, and even visual arts, as its purpose of advancing the cultural narrative of Black History through music is applicable to all. Programming now includes but is not be limited to: n
A public film premiere early 2023
n
K ids to Concerts educational videos & Musical Sprouts STEAM-enhanced curriculum
n
R ussell Hill Rogers Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral concert with music from the film (occurred 23 January 2022).

JULIUS QUARTET Dallas, TX, USA Characterized as “the captivating young string quartet” (The Bennington Banner), the Julius Quartet has cultivated a distinguished voice since its formation in 2012. As passionate chamber musicians, the quartet strives to spread the values of chamber music to diverse communities in addition to presenting their diacritic expression within the music. Swiftly rising to critical acclaim, the group was awarded First Prize at the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, First Prize at the first annual MA-ASTA String Quartet/Quintet Competition by unanimous vote, and was nominated for the Harvard Musical Association’s Arthur Foote Award. The quartet’s expressive personality, commended for leaving audiences “mesmerized by its resonant sound” (The Collegiate Times), has led to performances all over North America in various venues such as Bing Concert Hall, Bargemusic, the Shalin Liu Performing Arts Center, The Moss Arts Center, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. In 2019, they collaborated with The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and award-winning Texas composer Jesus Martinez in tribute to both the Museum’s thirtieth anniversary and the fifty-fifth anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, performing a newly commissioned work “The Sixth Floor” - a stirring journey from the darkest days of 1963 to a deeper understanding of the enduring legacy of President Kennedy and what lies beyond. Cherishing the collaborative essence of chamber music, the group has shared in numerous collaborations with celebrated artists such as Andres Cardenes, Aaron Boyd, members of the St. Lawrence, Shanghai, Escher and Lydian Quartets in addition to composers Steven Mackey, Louis Andriessen, Dan Tepfer, Jesper Koch, and Jesus J. Martinez. The group has been featured in the Music from Salem festival, and other festivals like the St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, McGill International String Quartet Academy, the Chamber Music Residency at The BANFF Centre, and the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music. Settled in Dallas, the quartet’s commitment to sharing the principles of chamber music through outreach events and educational workshops has impacted local communities and audiences nationwide. The group has engaged in Massachusetts with the “Bridging the Gap” at-risk youth program associated with The Salvation Army, participated in the Quad City Arts Visiting Artist Series through performance workshops and interactive sessions reaching over 2,000 people, given masterclasses for numerous youth music programs such as the Empire State Youth Symphony String Festival, and have been featured guest artists at prestigious institutions such as the University of South Florida and a residency at Virginia Tech University. They also served as Assistant Chamber Music Coaches at Peak Fellowship at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
24 | mbaw.org
The quartet recently completed its tenure as the Peak Fellowship Ensemble-in-Residence at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, receiving close mentorship from violinist Aaron Boyd, Director of Chamber Music at SMU, and members of the Escher String Quartet. Prior to this appointment, the quartet served as the Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, where they worked intensely with the celebrated Shanghai Quartet. Oher primary mentors and influences include Rhonda Rider, Mark Steinberg, and Lila Brown. Furthermore, the group has worked with various esteemed chamber musicians such as Shmuel Ashkenasi, Michael Tree, Gerhard Schulz, Mathias Tacke, Harald Schoneweg, Joseph Silverstein, and members of the Juilliard, Emerson, American, St. Lawrence, Tokyo, Miro, Chilingarian, Ying and Latino Americano.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT As the newest member of the MBAW staff, I am honored to report on the work and progress of our three major community programs for the 2021-2022 season. In early 2021, Musical Sprouts, our STEAMbased music and arts curriculum program, shifted to an easily accessible online format for students and teachers. This season, Kids to Concerts will be a hybrid of online and physical school concerts, adjustable for the safety of our students, and will feature Ukraine, African American history, and China. Lastly, we are currently in the process of reevaluating and revamping the Golden Age concert series to bring a more engaging and impactful program to the senior community in greater San Antonio. If you are interested in becoming involved or would like more information about our community programs, please contact me at jennifer@musicalbridges.org.
