Welcome to the 8th Annual International Music Festival!

When the world is in tremendous danger imposed by the leader of the very country in which I was born, what do I do? How do I go on?

Everyone does what they can. Musical Bridges Around the World’s medium is the arts and we turn to music in these days of horror and uncertainty. We will celebrate our shared humanity during this 5-day International Music Festival, free and open to all!

“Gracias a La Vida!” (Wednesday 23 March at 7 PM, Charline McCombs Empire Theatre) opens the festival with an all-star cast. Mexican jazz singer Magos Herrera and Galician accordionist Victor Prieto join pianist Aaron Prado, bassist Juan Acosta and percussionist Gerry Gibbs for a night highlighting Spanish, Mexican, and Latin American music in modern and latin jazz styles.

“Melting Pot” (Thursday 24 March 7PM, Charline McCombs Empire Theatre) captures the essence of folk music from around the world with Sam Reider and the Human Hands. I found them during a NY artist showcase and fell in love with the ensemble. Reider’s contemporary compositions blend American jazz, folk, and pop tunes from around the globe.

“The Lark” (Friday 25 March 7 PM, San Fernando Cathedral) will showcase chamber music at its best with an outstanding group of Austin-based artists! The Miró Quartet, the first ensemble ever to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant, are joined by Kristin Wolfe Jensen, Professor of Bassoon at UT Austin, to perform a mix of Joseph Haydn, Wynton Marsalis, and more.

“Duo Amal” (Saturday 26 March 7 PM, San Fernando Cathedral) is concert pianists Yaron Kohlberg of Israel and Bishara Haroni of Palestine. As “Amal” means “Hope” in Arabic, their name reflects the belief that music sees no political nor religious barriers. They will perform pieces arranged for four hands on two pianos.

“Spring Renaissance” (Sunday 27 March 7 PM, San Fernando Cathedral) will fill the air with musical masterpieces of Medieval and Renaissance performed by The Austin Troubadours, a high-energy international ensemble led by award-winning Serbian lutenist Slobodan Vujisic.

“Family Day!” (Sunday 27 March 3:30 - 7 PM, Main Plaza) is a new outdoor event inviting families to enjoy performances vignettes and interactive activities on downtown’s Main Plaza.

Performances include Spanish flamenco, American jazz, Mexican mariachi, Classical Indian dance, Puerto Rican folk, and European Renaissance music.

March 23, 2022 Welcome to Musical Bridges Around the World’s 8th International Music Festival!

As we emerge from a global pandemic, the people of San Antonio are ready to once again come together and celebrate international culture and heritage through music and dance at this year’s festival.

As the sovereignty of Ukraine is threatened abroad, it reminds us here at home in our City of Compassion that we are united by our common humanity. Last fall, San Antonio elementary school students traveled virtually across Ukraine to experience the geography, history and music of the region. Musical Bridges has made this video available publicly for all audiences to view on the MBAW YouTube channel.

By sharing the diverse offerings of world music, MBAW showcases the power of art to transcend those elements which so often divide us. Duo Amal, an Israeli-Palestinian piano duo, demonstrates this at the very core of their pairing in this year’s festival.

As a member of the Musical Bridges’ Global Advisory Council, I am proud of the impact we have in our community, especially by lowering the barrier to access by providing programming of this caliber free of charge. It is with pride that our Department of Arts & Culture and Global Engagement Office continue their commitment to this noble mission.

MAGOS HERRERA | voice Mexico City, Mexico / New York City, NY Born in Mexico City and currently based out of New York City, Magos Herrera is a dazzling jazz singer-songwriter, producer, and educator. Declared as “One of the greatest contemporary interpreters of the song” by The Latin Jazz Network, Magos is regarded as one of the most active vocalists in the contemporary Latin American jazz scene, she is best known for her eloquent vocal improvisation and her singular bold style, which embraces elements of contemporary jazz with Ibero-American melodies and rhythms singing in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, in a style that elegantly blends and surpasses language boundaries.

This Grammy-nominated artist has performed at leading venues such as Lincoln Center in NYC, Kennedy Center in DC, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and Union Chapel in London, and isis well known for championing women’s causes, serving as a spokesperson for UN Women and overall promoter of gender equality. She has recorded 10 albums, the latest of which was 2020’s “Con Alma”, created and recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with composer Paola Prestini. It is an operatic tableau on isolation (National Sawdust Tracks), exploring the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation.

VICTOR PRIETO | accordion Galicia, Spain There are some musicians who always get classified in the “beyond” categories, usually in such a unique area of music with few peers to categorize their instrumental talent and focus. Victor Prieto belongs to that list. Grammy Winner Victor Prieto is hailed by The New York Times as “A fiendishly skilled accordionist and composer” and by The All About Jazz as “One of the best World music and Jazz accordionists now days”.

He has changed the way people view accordion by revolutionizing technique and sound (Chord approach on both hands). His love for traditional Galician music and classical education enriches his compositions with explosive rhythm and colors combining Galician Roots, Celtic, Brazilian, Jazz, Tango, and Classical music. Grammy-winning and nominated collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, the Valinor Quartet, along with masterclasses at Berklee College, Spain, Italy, and Portugal exemplify his breadth of experience and talent. He also created his own jazz accordion studies program at Berklee and his students that are internationally renowned accordionists and teachers. Victor Prieto is a Petosa Artist.

AARON PRADO, DMA | jazz piano San Antonio, TX Aaron is a pianist, composer, educator, and radio personality based in San Antonio, Texas. Prado received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music in 2014. From 2003-2009, Prado was Music Director at Trinity University’s jazz radio station – KRTU 91.7FM – where he is currently host of “Aaron Prado Presents” – Sundays 2:00-4:00 p.m.

In 2011, Prado debuted the “San Antonio Jazz Suite” – a large-scale composition scored for big band, string quartet, and narration, and has also published a Bill Evans transcription book, released two albums in 2019, and now teaches/is President of the Faculty Senate at Northwest Vista College.

Musical Bridges Around the World commissioned Prado to compose the piece “Sister Cities” for their 5th annual International Music Festival featuring musicians from San Antonio’s Sister Cities. The ensemble was brought back virtually twice afterwards, second for MBAW’s first virtual 2021 concert with Aaron’s new arrangement of “We Shall Overcome”. He is also currently the music supervisor and soundtrack composer of their upcoming film “The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music.”

JUAN ACOSTA | bass San Antonio, TX Juan Acosta is a double-bassist of the San Antonio jazz scene who has performed with the likes of Pete Rodríguez, the Jerry Espinoza Standards Quartet, Adrian Ruiz, Matthew Maldonado, Chris Villanueva, Gerry Gibbs, Brandon Guerra, and more. This San Juan, Puerto Rico native has also toured overseas in Germany and Luxembourg, and is an avid fitness enthusiast.

GERRY GIBBS | percussion San Antonio, TX Gerry Gibbs is a Grammy-nominated drummer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, bandleader, composer & arranger.

Gerry is also an in-demand drummer who has worked with a who’s who in jazz: Mccoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane, Stanley Clarke, Joe Henderson, Hubert Laws, James Moody, Sam Rivers, Patrice Rushen, Dewey Redman, Eddie Harris, Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, Brad Mehldau. His versatility has enabled him to work other artists like the Parliament Funkadelic, Flying Lotus and legendary comedian Steve Allen. In 2021, Gerry released the album “Songs From My Father” that features Chick Corea, Ron Carter, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, Patrice Rushen, Larry Goldings, Geoff Keezer, and Christian McBride. MELTING POT THURSDAY 24 MARCH 2022, 7 PM Charline McCombs Empire Theatre Sam Reider and the Human Hands bring irresistible melodies and fiery improvisation to a mashup of Reider’s own creation, blending contemporary composition techniques with American jazz, folk, and pop tunes from around the globe. This unique six-piece ensemble features Reider on accordion, an array of string instruments, and saxophone.

SAM REIDER AND THE HUMAN HANDS United States Irresistible melodies, fiery improvisation and otherworldly sounds collide in what Songlines Magazine dubbed “mash-up of the the Klezmatics, Quintette du Hot Club de France and the Punch Brothers.” The New York Times calls it “modern folk music with saxophone and accordion.” The Human Hands got their start playing regular late night sessions at well-known dives and venues like Brooklyn’s Barbes and Sunny’s, and Manhattan’s Rockwood Music Hall. The group has evolved into a 21st-century folk music orchestra featuring a rotating cast of some of the brightest names in jazz, bluegrass, classical, and world music.

Since the release of “Too Hot to Sleep” in 2018, Sam Reider and the Human Hands have toured throughout the US and UK, appearing at major venues and festivals like Jazz at Lincoln Center, Celtic Connections, and the Savannah Music Festival. Their most recent release, “The Human Hands EP” features 6 original compositions recorded and filmed live-to-tape in Brooklyn. These pieces feature several styles of music written for various ensembles: a solo piano prelude, a trio for accordion, violin, and octave-mandolin, and folk-infused compositions for 6 and 7-piece ensemble.

MIRÓ QUARTET Austin, TX, USA The Miró Quartet is one of America’s most celebrated and dedicated string quartets, having been labeled by The New Yorker as “furiously committed” and noted by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for its “exceptional tonal focus and interpretive intensity.”

For over twenty-five years the Quartet has performed on the most prestigious concert stages, earning accolades from critics and audiences alike. Based in Austin, TX, the Miró takes pride in finding new ways to communicate with audiences of all backgrounds while cultivating the longstanding tradition of chamber music.

In their 2021-22 season, they premiere a new work entitled Microfictions by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw. The Miró is also partnering with renowned soprano Karen Slack in a new program exploring the works of Florence Price and Margaret Bonds. Additional upcoming performances include ones for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Shriver Hall, Music Toronto, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society, and Chamber Music Northwest.

The ensemble’s wealth of past projects includes their recording of a complete box set of Beethoven’s string quartets, the Archive Project honoring American string quartet tradition by recreating historic recitals by iconic, early 20th-century ensembles, production of an Emmy Award-winning multimedia project titled Transcendence which is centered around Franz Schubert’s Quartet in G major on rare Stradivarius instruments, sold-out performances internationally, and numerous commissioned premieres. KRISTIN WOLFE JENSEN bassoon Austin, TX, USA Kristin Wolfe Jensen has been the bassoon professor at The University of Texas at Austin since 1995, on faculty of the International Festival Institute at Round Top, Principal Bassoonist with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Founder and Artistic Director of the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition, and a licensed Body Mapping Educator.

A reviewer in the American Record Guide said of Ms. Jensen’s solo CD Shadings, “…She has simply turned in the finest-played bassoon recital I have ever heard….She obviously sees tone quality as the foundation for her fluent technique…It is a ravishing sound, siren-like in its attractive flair….Ms. Jensen could teach a lot about musicality to a number of famous violinists….” Her recent releases include Handel: The “Halle” Sonatas” (2017, Equilibrium label), Modal Cycle – Live from France (2016, Longhorn Label), and …and Kristin Wolfe Jensen, UT Bassoons in Collaboration (2015, Longhorn Label). She has given guest recitals and master classes at major American music schools and her former UT students hold major orchestral positions, military band positions and university teaching positions around the country. DUO AMAL | piano Israel - Palestine Originated in the conflicted Middle East, Duo Amal was formed by international pianists Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni. The duo’s name, Amal, means hope in Arabic and reflects their belief that music can overcome different backgrounds and cultural boundaries. The Sydney Morning Herald noted that “the virtuoso pianists known as Duo Amal bear testament to the capacity of music to transcend conflicts that have proved intractable”. World famous conductor Zubin Mehta wrote: “Haroni and Kohlberg are two excellent pianists.. This duo is not only a sign of friendship between their peoples but a music collaboration to enjoy”.

Following their first joint performance at a peace concert in the Oslo Opera House in 2008, they have played numerous concerts in such renowned concert halls as the Metropolitan museum in New York, Kimmel center in Philadelphia, Beijing concert hall, Asahi hall in Tokyo, Melbourne recital center, Sala São Paulo in Brazil, Gran Teatro Nacional in Bogota, Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. They have also performed at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva and have been invited to the Vatican for a concert for the Pope as part of the global education day, which has since been postponed due to COVID 19. The duo combine two-piano solo performances with orchestra and recitals in traditional concert halls with educational outreach and workshops in order to promote their vision.

Yaron and Bishara are also active in the world of music as presenters and soloists. Mr. Kohlberg is the president of Piano Cleveland, the presenter of the world renowned Cleveland international piano competition, in which he won the silver medal in 2007 performing in the finals with the Cleveland orchestra. He has won over 10 international piano competition prizes and performed in venues such as the Kremlin in Moscow, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the Forbidden City concert hall in Beijing. He speaks six languages including Mandarin Chinese. His vision of expanding audiences through accessible programming and supporting musicians has resulted in Piano Cleveland’s online piano competition ‘virtualoso’ which supported artists during the COVID 19 pandemic and ‘the listening series’--all reaching thousands of viewers worldwide.

Mr. Haroni is the founder and director of ‘Bestival’, an international festival which brings together performances of Arab, Jewish and traditional classical music. He recently launched the Be Major foundation which supports young musicians in the Middle East. As soloist Bishara has performed with major orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, the Valencia Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic and collaborated with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta. He performed in various chamber music concerts at locations such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Salzburg Mozarteum. He completed his studies at the Hanover School of Music and Dance.

AUSTIN TROUBADOURS “The Austin Troubadours are an international group of instrumentalists and singers whose mission is to revive the beauty of musical masterpieces from Medieval and Renaissance Europe.” The group was founded in 2008 in Austin, Texas by award-winning lutenist and early music specialist Slobodan Vujisic. From 1981-94, Vujisic performed extensively at major concert halls in Berlin, Paris, and Eastern Europe with his previous early music group Ensemble Renaissance, before moving to Austin in 1994.

He subsequently performed with the University of Texas Early Music Ensemble, the Texas Early Music Project, and the Baroque Ensemble La Folia until 2004, when a masterclass event in Belgrade prompted Slobodan to create a new super-group in Texas, The Austin Troubadors.

After many interviews with musicians, a final selection resulted in a group of highly sought after musicians that include Austin Symphony members, UT faculty members, Fulbright scholars, and award-winning early music specialists. The Troubadours’ inaugural 2009 Texas Tour produced several successful Austin concerts and featured a Houston debut supported by the Houston Early Music organization.

In addition, they performed multiple concerts at The Wortham Theatre as part of the Revels Houston Medieval Show. They have appeared twice on Houston’s NPR Radio Station KUHF 88.7 for their Front Row program and have had live appearances on TV channel 8 News, FOX news channel, and on KUT’s Eclecticos show featuring John Aielli. In April 2010, they had a sold-out concert at the First Presbyterian Church, with world-class soloists Kathryn Montoya and Angela Malek. They also provided music for Austin Shakespeare’s 2011 production of “The Tempest”.

The Austin Troubadors’ programs have been funded by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and have also been included on the Texas Commission on the Arts’ Texas Touring Roster.

Their involvement with Musical Bridges Around the World began with a March 2015 performance at the San Fernando Cathedral during MBAW’s 2nd Annual International Music Festival and continued with a return to the festival in 2019. They have also performed at Bexar County schools and senior communities as part of MBAW’s free community concert programs.

The Austin Troubadors released the album “Mediterranean Journey” in 2012 which can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, or streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Youtube Music, Pandora, or Deezer.

Kids to Concerts introduces K-12 students to world culture through folk music and dance in their very own schools.

The Gurwitz Youth Ambassadors are young local San Antonio pianists that represent The Gurwitz International Piano Competition through school/ community performances, masterclass participation, and speaking engagements.

The Colburn-Pledge Music Scholarship provides tuition aid to young Texas string players preparing for careers in classical music. Over $99,000 has been awarded over the years to recipients.

Golden Age brings outstanding live music performances to seniors in assisted living and community centers in the greater Bexar County area.
