LETTER FROM THE CEO & BOARD CHAIRMAN Welcome to our 22nd Season! It is with great pride that we introduce Russell Hill Rogers Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral as it has never before been presented! We are taking these concerts to new heights, asking each of our international artists this season to include a piece from their native country. What a way to celebrate cultural diversity! We will also pay tribute this season to Anya’s father, who recently passed, during a special summer concert. Over the summer, some of our team traveled to Spain to receive the Fair Saturday Award and present our organization at The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Alongside arts agencies from Germany, Rwanda, South Africa and Spain - Musical Bridges was the first US organization to receive this prestigious honor for social impact through the arts. In the off-season, we have been working hard to develop new programs. Musical Bridges Around the World recently absorbed the San Antonio International Piano Competition. Rebranded as The Gurwitz (honoring past competition president Ruth Jean Gurwitz), it replaces our International Music Festival this season and each quadrenium thereafter. We have also launched Impresario Club as we invite patrons to Celebrate the Senses! This membership series will pair fine wine and culinary delights with award-winning artists on select Fridays throughout the season. A highlight in our engagement this year is the exciting growth of our Musical Sprouts educational program, now in its fourth year. It measures the impact of STEAM curricula taught through the media of music and art in partnership with UT Health and UTSA. Thanks to the recent grant awarded by the Impact San Antonio Foundation, Inc., the program has expanded from 4 to 10 Title 1 schools in Bexar County! If you would like to know more about supporting our programs and events, visit our website or call the office at 210-464-1534. We look forward to sharing this spectacular season with you!

RUS S I A N S T R I N G O RC H E S T R A russia

Founded in 1991, the orchestra, comprised of some of Russia’s finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky. Whether it is the highly-acclaimed CDs or its mesmerizing concerts, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin’s warmth and high energy create addictive performances that stay with listeners long after the last note has been played. About half of nearly 2,000 concerts the orchestra has performed to date have taken place in Moscow, the rest were played on tours in 25 countries in North and South America, Europe and the Far East. The orchestra’s discography of over 30 CDs has received widespread international acclaim, such as the Diapason d’Or award in France, Critics Choice in London’s Gramophone, Critics Choice in The New York Times, and Record of the Year award in Hong Kong. The signature quality of the orchestra is the depth and variety of its repertoire -- over 1000 compositions from early baroque to works written on commission from Misha Rachlevsky and the orchestra by composers from Russia, Europe and the USA. The orchestra prides itself in offering interesting and often unique programs, not only for its home audience, but on tour as well. From Frankfurter Allgemeine, summarizing its review of the orchestra’s debut at Frankfurt’s Alte Oper: “The evening with this ensemble, which boasts to be made up of Moscow’s best musicians, completely eliminated any doubts with regard to this statement.”

M I S H A R AC H L E VS K Y | Music Director Misha Rachlevsky’s lifetime affinity for chamber music and chamber orchestra repertoire began at the College of the Moscow Conservatory and the Gnessin Academy of Music. Born in Moscow, his violin studies began at the age of five and continued through the well-traveled path of the Russian school of string playing. After leaving the Soviet Union in 1973, he lived and worked in different countries on three continents, and in1976 settled in the United States, becoming active in the field of chamber music. Mr. Rachlevsky founded the New American Chamber Orchestra (NACO) in 1984, and led it to international prominence, completing nine European tours in four years. In 1989, Rachlevsky accepted an offer from the city of Granada, Spain - a two-year project under which NACO became the resident orchestra of Granada while, concurrently, Rachlevsky founded and led Granada’s own chamber orchestra. In 1991, in the heady aftermath of Moscow’s momentous events of August 1991, Misha Rachlevsky found it impossible to resist an opportunity presented by Claves to record Russian works for this label. When Claves concurred with his suggestion to realize the project with Russian musicians, Rachlevsky called auditions, and Chamber Orchestra Kremlin was created.

There are some musicians who always get classified in the “beyond” categories in the magazine polls. They are usually musicians that are in such a unique area of music that there are few peers to make a single category for their respective instrumental talent and focus. Victor Prieto belongs to that list. Grammy Winner Victor Prieto is hailed by The New York Times as “A fiendishly skilled accordionist and composer” and by The All About Jazz as “One of the best World music and Jazz accordionists now days”. He has changed the way musicians and spectators view accordion by revolutionizing both technique and sound (Chord approach on both hands). His love for the traditional Galician music and classical education enriches his compositions with explosive rhythm and colors uniquely combining Galician Roots, Celtic, Brazilian, Jazz, Tango, and Classical music

DUO BALDO italy

BRAD REPP | Violin ALDO GENTILESCHI | Piano/ Actor In 2002, in a small town on the outskirts of Florence, Italy, the idea of Duo Baldo was born in the most natural of ways. Brad, an American violinist studying in Lucca, and Aldo, a pianist and aspiring actor, met casually in a quaint coffee shop and began experimenting with new ideas that would eventually, and unknowingly, blossom into a show that captivates and surprises. The duo became the highlight of the town, and week after week people would flock from all around to see what they had invented. And now, over a thousand performances and tens of thousands of delighted audience members in major concert halls, recital halls and theaters around the world is the result of that casual meeting of two very different people from two very diverse cultural backgrounds. The musical comedy team Duo Baldo is renowned violinist Brad Repp and pianist/actor Aldo Gentileschi. Their critically acclaimed concerts combine virtuosic performances, theatrical humor and pop culture. Duo Baldo made their debut with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in 2004. In February 2006, Duo Baldo won first prize at the National Short Theater Competition in Florence. After winning first prize at the 2009 Musicomicontest, they performed at the opening of the 2010 Salzburg Festival. Other invitations include Tokyo’s Musashino Cultural Foundation, the Shanghai Concert Hall, the Mozaic Festival, the Beijing Concert Hall, the Chamber Music Society of Trieste, as well as appearances in Brescia, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Lugano (Switzerland), Mexico City and Stockholm. In 2016, the duo was highly praised for a successful television appearance on Italy’s popular talent show, “Tu Sí Que Vales”. In 2018, the duo made their first successful US Tour which included 36 cities. The Ponca City News reviewed one of the duo’s performances last February: “I truthfully can’t remember laughing so much unless it was at a former concert when Victor Borge did a Community Concert here more years ago than I can count.” Also in 2018 the duo performed to a sold-out crowd at Taipei’s prestigious National Concert Hall, earning themselves a second Chinese/Taiwanese tour in October of 2019. Y U RI S H E I K H E T | V io l i n 0 9 / 0 7/19 3 3 - 0 6 / 0 7/ 2 019 Yuri Sheykhet, who was known for his love of classical music and especially for violin, his quirky sense of humor and intellectual curiosity died on June 7th 2019 age of 85 in San Antonio due to complications from heart disease. Yuri was born in 1933 in Moscow, Soviet Union into the family of professional musicians, his father was the conductor of a jazz band in Moscow. The deprivations and horrors of the Second World War, growing up in Russia stayed with him his entire life. The joke in his family was that his parents had to come up with special treats to have him stop practicing. He met his future wife Zina Khiger - fellow violinist in The Riga Conservatory while both were studying for Masters degree in violin performance. It took a lot of convincing but eventually Zina agreed to marry him. In 1961 daughter Anya was born and they decided to make her a pianist as two professional violinists needed a free accompanist in the family. Mark was born in 1973 and it was decided even before his birth - he was going to be a concert violinist. Yuri’s dream came true when he won a violin position in the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in 1958, where he worked for over 40 years. Among the most memorable moments were the premier of Shostakovich’s Symphony #13 under the baton of Kirill Kondrashin, and accompanying Van Cliburn when he won the Tchaikovsky Competition. His job took him all over the world when the Soviet Union was a closed country and very few others in the Soviet Union had the opportunity to see the world. His jokes were soul food for his orchestra colleagues and over the years became a part of the orchestra’s culture. He immigrated to the US after retiring from his orchestra position in 2001 and was very active as a musician in San Antonio as a part of the San Antonio Virtuosos piano quartet and through numerous students. In later years despite developing health issues, he still would practice every day for hours and took his violin with him, even when he was hospitalized. The staff of Main Methodist to this day remembers the unforgettable picture of Yuri walking down the cardiology floor practicing his violin in the hospital gown not properly tied in the back. The biggest regret of his life was that he did not leave a professional solo recording on violin. Yuri infused the love and art of music in his children and grandchildren. His daughter is a concert pianist with a doctoral degree in music and the founder and artistic director of the performing arts nonprofit Musical Bridges Around the World. His son is a concert violinist and a very talented visual artist. His grandson plays jazz piano for fun and his granddaughters take piano lessons. His granddaughters (7 and 9 year old) stole his heart in later years and took a rightful place next to his love for violin.

Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts for underwriting artistic fees for Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral

Russell Hill Rogers, a San Antonio businessman, philanthropist and patron of the arts, had a long association with the arts in San Antonio. While in high school, he was concertmaster of the San Antonio Youth Symphony, and at the age of 17 was chose to be in the violin section of San Antonio’s first Symphony Orchestra, founded by Max Reiter in 1939. For over 40 years, he was active in most of San Antonio’s arts organizations, serving on the Boards of the San Antonio Symphony Society, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and on the Council of the McNay Art Museum. As an actor/singer, Mr. Rogers played many roles on the stage of the San Pedro Playhouse and served as President of the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Little Theatre. He was also a member and past president of the Texas Watercolor Society and sang with the Symphony Mastersingers of the time, including the period during which they served as the Opera Chorus for the touring MET productions presented annually in San Antonio from the 1940s to the 1960s. In 1979, a gift to the San Antonio Symphony from Mr. Rogers established the annual Russell Hill Rogers String Residency, providing local string players of all ages with a unique opportunity to work with internationallyrenowned artists. Shortly before his untimely death in 1986, Mr. Rogers established the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts for the “support, encouragement, and preservation of the creative and performing arts including but not limited to painting, sculpture, architecture, music, literature and drama.” It’s specific purpose is to benefit arts organizations and provide arts offerings available to residents of Bexar County, and the Fund has underwritten a number of significant arts projects and productions in San Antonio.

THE GURWITZ YOUTH AMBASSADORS

An important element of The Gurwitz mission is to encourage the development of pianists in Greater San Antonio and Texas through the Music Ambassador Program. Young pianists represent Musical Bridges & The Gurwitz to showcase the positive experiences music can bring to people of all ages and backgrounds in our community. Ambassadors are 19 years of age or younger and come with the highest recommendation from their piano teachers. They are asked to play seasonal music or a short recital, to attend or participate in a master class, or to speak with students about how they chose to play piano. These aspiring young pianists play for crowds large or small, and serve as the “Opening Act for Gurwitz-sponsored recitals by professional pianists. Music Ambassadors receive certificates for their work and are included by Musical Bridges Around the World in select activities with international artists throughout the season.
