Extension, the offerings have expanded further. The program included Innovation Seminars led by an incredible panel of over 50 leading forces in our industry, an impressive array of online performances, the addition of the Digital Challenge, and Professional Development Stipends. Of significant note was each fellow receiving a Technology Package for use during MARLI and throughout the year—unleashing the talents of our fellows as they learn how to thrive in the virtual environment.

When the COVID-19 pandemic made our traditional, in-person experience no longer an option this year, the Music Academy swiftly took bold steps to ensure an optimal experience for the fellows. We remained committed to providing the next generation of classically-trained musicians with necessary career-launching tools, especially at this critical time. While we could never replace the Academy experience with our community in Santa Barbara, we were determined to provide fellows with support and inspiration while advancing their technical skills and artistry.

All Music Academy’s sectors – our board and administration, faculty artists, fellows, and community of supporters – mobilized to deliver our mission in a re-imagined way, making the monumental transition to the Music Academy Remote Learning Institute (MARLI).

This remarkable and essential pivot would not have been possible without the full dedication of every member of this family. We are enormously proud of everyone involved for seizing this opportunity so successfully.

We have received thoughtful feedback on how MARLI has impacted the lives of our fellows, faculty, and even community members. For some, the online content was their source of solace and joy during difficult times. For many fellows, the seminars and support provided much-needed daily structure and hope to continue carving their professional paths. And the faculty were perfecting the art of mentoring in an online landscape. Indeed, we have discovered that MARLI will continue to inform future seasons of Music Academy training, online access, and engagement with our community and industry leaders.

All fellows have been offered guaranteed enrollment in the 2021 Summer School and Festival, so the connections made with them this summer by our community members and faculty artists will continue to flourish in next summer’s Festival.

Your dedicated support and engagement was essential to the success of MARLI. We are grateful to you for taking this journey with us to make 2020 one of our most remarkable summers to date.

The pandemic along with global protests had created a vastly different environment for education, and the Music Academy curriculum was poised to deliver. Groundwork had already been laid to cultivate innovation and embrace social justice in our field over the past three years. Now with MARLI and the Creative

he headlines in early 2020 were increasingly dire. A novel coronavirus—COVID-19—was spreading across the globe with alarming speed and each new day seemed to bring further bad news. By the time California Governor Gavin Newsom announced an unprecedented statewide stay-athome order, it was clear that the 2020 Summer School and Festival would not be untouched by the pandemic.

The cancellation of long-planned events is never easy, but organizations around the world found themselves in the unenviable situation of cancellation as the only logical option. That’s what makes the pivot undertaken by the Music Academy such a timely and creative solution.

Noozhawk wrote that none of Santa Barbara’s “musical institutions had a more complicated program/curriculum to be converted into the virtual than the Music Academy of the West, and the brilliance of their was the discovery that this set solution… could hardly be of limitations only expanded surpassed.” Faced with the prospect of cancelling the our imagination and Summer Festival, the Academy chose another route. MARLI would offer the opportunity to slow down and emphasize innovation at a time when fellows weren’t being pulled in so many different directions. But MARLI was never conceived of as a replacement or substitute for the in-person Festival, a personal and musical experience that simply cannot be replicated. For that reason, all accepted fellows had their official enrollment extended from 2020 to 2021, whether they decided to participate in MARLI or not. In the end, 134 out of 139 accepted fellows chose to enroll in MARLI, a true testament to the strength of the program’s offerings.

Putting this together in a span of time more accurately measured in weeks than months wasn’t easy, though. Two temporary, full-time administrators were brought on to shepherd the project: Jennifer Bowman, Director of Music Education at the John F. Kennedy Center 3

Together with the Music Academy’s Artistic Department, led by Chief Artistic Officer Jamie Broumas, Bowman and Molino Dunn worked tirelessly to institute the new endeavor, putting together a distinguished list of speakers and setting about tackling the challenges inherent in the remote format. Chief among these was the far-flung nature of the participants. With faculty, fellows, guest speakers, and administrators in varying time zones, every studio class, lesson, or coaching had to be carefully scheduled— to say nothing of the Innovation Seminars, which had to be scheduled for times that were acceptable for everyone.

Likewise, the industry itself is charged to develop audiences and create sustainability for classical music. Generations of musicians, scholars, critics, and administrators have wrung their hands and asked the question, “Is there a future for classical music?” The future of the industry is not only in the hands of the big organizations; it is something young musicians must engage with, too. Innovative ways of shaping this future were the subject of panels featuring Kathryn McDowell, Francesca Zambello, Lee Koonce, Anne Midgette, Sasha Cooke, Rob Robbins, Nadia Sirota, Emil Kang, and Conrad Tao, a veritable who’s who of musicians and arts leaders.

There is also an opportunity and a need to diversify our industry both in practitioners and audiences. Discourse on the critical issues of race and representation were planned as part of MARLI, even before the murder of George Floyd reignited conversation on racism in our society. Embracing new generations of listeners means ensuring that the music they hear, the composers that write it, the musicians that perform it, and the institutions that present it reflect the diverse world in which we all live. Social entrepreneur Kelly Hall-Tompkins encouraged the fellows to make meaningful contributions to their communities even as they work to establish themselves in the Innovation speaker Marc Bamuthi Joseph field. Likewise, Marc Bamuthi Joseph—a spoken-word poet and arts activist whose work as an artist explores issues of race, identity, and marginalization—asked, “How can fellows think of themselves as ‘conduits for providing music and creativity’ at a time when the world needs it most?” in his seminar, Artists as Social Engineers. And radio host Terrance McKnight joined tenor Lawrence Brownlee and composer Paul Moravec to discuss ways of highlighting underrepresented peoples.

While the first four weeks focused on training, performance, and innovation, a two-week Creative Extension focused on professional development, putting skills to work and training into action. MARLI’s regimented schedule was replaced with a creative period wherein the fellows’ time commitment was driven by work of their choosing, freeing them up to focus on developing musical and entrepreneurial projects, or to seek out further professional development. 93 fellows opted to receive a $1,250 Professional Development Stipend for the Creative Extension, using the funds to develop career skills or produce creative content. Additional opportunities came in the form of the London Symphony Orchestra Keston MAX auditions, the Fast Pitch Awards, and the new Digital Challenge.

The former two-time Poet Laureate of the United States and Princeton Professor in the Humanities Tracy K. Smith shared her perspective on the potential relationship between art and justice in a Concert Hall Online Signature Event.

Ms. Smith’s most recent opera libretto, Castor and Patience, about a Southern family dispute over land rights, was commissioned by the Cincinnati Opera and is set to premiere in 2021.

Although for the first time in 73 years the Music Academy was not able to welcome the public to events, the public instead had the opportunity to welcome the Academy into their homes. Public initiatives like the Concert Hall Online and the Resonance Blog kept audiences connected during this time of necessary distance. Fellows, faculty, and alumni submitted performances for Virtual Picnic Concerts, the COVID-era equivalent of the Festival’s famous Friday night events, and the public was given a taste of the life of a MARLI fellow with selections from seminars and other classes.

But the biggest public highlights were the Signature Events. Planned specifically for MARLI, these included a video of Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man by the brass and percussion fellows; an orchestral performance of the last movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 94; the Sing! Program Season Finale Concert; a recital by faculty artist Jeremy Denk; two presentations from Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel, one of them a collaboration between the Vocal Institute and Sing!; and I was deeply challenged by this month of seminars, An Evening with the Vocal Institute, Myths and Revelations. discussions, and learning. The most apt comparison may be to the very first Summer Festival. When a group of arts patrons first gathered in early 1947 to conceive of what would become the Music Academy of the West, they set for themselves a mighty goal: to produce a Festival from scratch in less than six months. Despite this seemingly herculean task, they accomplished what they set out to do. Today’s Academy was tasked with reconceiving of that Festival in a span of only weeks. The result has been, to quote Charles Donelan of The Independent, “one of the web’s most impressive and joyous

classical music experiences.” All sectors of the Music Academy community have risen to meet the great challenges of our time.

What we’re left with is a sense of optimism in the knowledge that not even a pandemic can quell the artistic spirit, that the obstacles we face today can be overcome through hard work and creativity, and that the future of this art form lies in the hands of these extraordinary artists. The work begun this summer is only the beginning.

A Community United through Singing The Music Academy of the West’s innovative Sing! Program — a free, choral initiative open to students in Santa Barbara County — moved to an online rehearsal model in April as a result of school closings due to the pandemic. In partnership with the Santa Barbara County Education Office, Program Administrator and Choral Director Daniel Newman-Lessler, and Choral Directors Christine Hollinger and Erin McKibben quickly transitioned the over 200 participants to the Zoom platform for online rehearsals and performances. This shift came with challenges, but the choral directors, volunteers, administrators, families, and — most importantly — the choristers faced these

challenges with an indomitable spirit in a tumultuous but inspiring year. The children’s season finale concert, recorded by the kids themselves in their homes during quarantine, was mastered, edited, and presented as part of the Academy’s Concert Hall Online (pictured above). Additionally, a group of Sing! children collaborated on a project with the Vocal Institute for the first time ever, performing in select scenes from Humperdinck’s fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel.

THE CREATIVE EXTENSION

A two-week Creative Extension allowed fellows to use groundwork from the curriculum to participate in programs and/or competitions to further their skills and give them tools for potential professional projects. The three areas of focus were Keston Music Academy Exchange program (Keston MAX) auditions, Fast Pitch Awards, and a new Digital Challenge. All participating fellows received a professional stipend of $1,250 with most opting for the Creative Extension audition or competitions. They also had the opportunity to use the stipend for further education or personal projects.

Music Academy of the West’s partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) launched in 2018. That summer and each following, five LSO principals have mentored fellows and adjudicated Keston MAX auditions, in which 12 fellows are sent to London the following year to perform with the LSO under the baton of Music Director Sir Simon Rattle. Their ten-day experience also encompasses coachings, mock auditions, work with community engagement, mock professional recording, and chamber ensemble performance.

The second annual Fast Pitch Awards was livestreamed on July 22 and featured 7 fellow finalists pitching entrepreneurial ideas and new innovations in classical performance, presentation, social impact, and audience development. They received feedback from industry leaders who served as the judging panel: Lincoln Center Chief of Innovation and Music Academy Board Member Clive Chang; Patagonia Vice President of Human Resources and Shared Services and Music Academy Board Member Dean Carter; Board Chair of Arts Administrator of Color Network and Kennedy Center Program Manager, Community Programming Ariel Davis; and viola soloist, chamber musician, curator, and broadcaster Nadia Sirota. To help make the final decision the judges also utilized live voting from audience members on the fellows’ pitches. The winners received a $1,500 cash prize and will participate in the March 22-27, 2021 Innovation Residential.

Fellows who entered the Digital Challenge created a three- to seven-minute video of their choosing and judged on: 1) musical/ artistic excellence, 2) technical proficiency (e.g., sound and video quality), and 3) creativity and innovation. Fellows had the option to collaborate with additional musical or visual artists in their video to incorporate interesting direction and storytelling. A preliminary round of judging was conducted by 21C Media Group, and one winner in each category was selected by an esteemed panel of judges: violinist Jennifer Koh; MARLI Keynote speaker and founder of Beth Morrison Projects, Beth Morrison; Music Academy Board member Pamela Strobel; and pianist/ composer Conrad Tao. The winners received a cash prize of $2,500.
