COMPETITION WINNERS RECITAL SERIES

APRIL 5, 6, 7, 2022 HAHN HALL

ERS

Welcome to the Music Academy of the West’s Competition Winners Recital Series. We are grateful that you are here to champion these five brilliant artists and to hear world premieres by relevant composers of today. Being a part of a world premiere performance is special, and in this case very special, because our winners were able to collaborate with each composer to discuss their intent and exchange feedback. The other interesting twist in these performances is that we challenged the artists to innovate the recital format with creative license. These new elements will help make the events memorable, allowing their artistry and original ideas to shine. The connection between artists and audiences can be magical – we hope you enjoy the show!

INNOVATION –and–

COMMUNITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CONNECTION

The Music Academy inspired the Competition Winners to consider ways to introduce personal creativity to the presentation of their recitals. The resulting Innovation Elements, funded by a creative grant from the Academy supported by Lorna Hedges, include special lighting, projections, 3D renderings, and even a keepsake for audience members to take home! Each recital has a unique element that will surprise and delight. The winners of the Duo and Marilyn Horne Song Competitions are visiting Adams Elementary School this week. Adams is one of the 33 elementary schools whose students participate in the Academy’s Sing! Children’s Chorus. The artists performed for and shared musical insights with third and sixth graders.

Winner of the Transcription Prize at the 2021 Primrose International Viola Competition, Keoni has been featured on the Emmy-nominated show Songcraft Presents and performed with the Count Basie Orchestra. As a Music Academy Keston MAX Fellow, he performed with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle in March and will travel to London this fall to study and perform with the Orchestra. THE LSO IN SANTA BARBRARA

Review: Santa Barbara music students, Simon Rattle and the London Symphony make for joyous revelation MARCH 29, 2022 “The LSO, no doubt enhanced by the vivacity of young players, sounded fresh and young again, full of granitic energy. Maybe you could compare it with the sensation of going from a traditional gas guzzler to a gutsy electric car.” – Mark Swed
