elcome to the Music Academy of the West’s 75th anniversary celebration kick-off! We rejoice in our multi-year partnership with the brilliant London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), the firstof-a-kind transatlantic educational collaboration. We are so glad they are here and you are here. At the London Symphony Orchestra Family Concert, we encourage everyone to relax and enjoy. If kids wiggle out of their seats or ask questions, it’s OK! We’re here to listen to great music and introduce children to the magic of instruments and sound. Our 75th Anniversary Community Concert features our all-star alumni paired with their LSO mentors in repertoire that was selected for a maximal training experience. Thank you to the LSO, Sir Simon Rattle, the Board of Directors, administrators, and everyone who helped make this residency special. OW TO BUILD AN ORCHESTRA

SAT, MAR 26, 4 PM | GRANADA THEATRE

FAMILY CONCERT London Symphony Orchestra Sir Simon Rattle conductor Rachel Leach presenter Sing! Children’s Chorus

MONTAGUES AND CAPULETS from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Sergei Prokofiev THE ORCHESTRA! Rachel Leach with Sing! Children’s Chorus FIRST MOVEMENT from ‘DIVERTIMENTO’ Béla Bartók FINALE from ‘GRAN PARTITA’ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN Aaron Copland PERCUSSION VARIATION from ‘THE YOUNG PERSON’S GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA’ Benjamin Britten Extracts from SYMPHONY NO 6 Ludwig van Beethoven LET’S MAKE A BAND! Rachel Leach with Sing! Children’s Chorus BOLÉRO Maurice Ravel arr. Rachel Leach

Today animatuer Rachel Leach will introduce you to the instruments of the orchestra and the amazing sounds they can make! Playing music from Beethoven to Britten, Mozart to Ravel, hear the strings, woodwind, brass and percussion of the London Symphony Orchestra show how they all are vital pieces of the orchestral make-up. Today’s concert is presented by LSO Discovery, which for the past 30 years has been at the heart of the LSO’s mission to bring great music to everyone. This concert is inspired by the award-winning book How to Build an Orchestra by Mary Auld, written in collaboration with the Orchestra, Auld, and featuring illustrations by Elisa Paganelli of Sir Simon Rattle and real LSO musicians. You can order the book online.

FAMILY CONCERT PROGRAM NOTES Montagues and Capulets from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Sergei Prokofiev Prokofiev was a Russian composer active early in the 20th century. The music was written for a ballet and combines elements of a march with the swung rhythms of early dance music to depict a stately ball with an undercurrent of suspense and mystery.

First movement from ‘Divertimento’ Béla Bartók

A divertimento was a genre of piece popular in the 1700s – its name indicates it is meant to entertain. Bartók (composing in the 19th and 20th centuries) was fascinated by older musical forms and the folk music of his native Hungary, and this piece joins the two.

Finale from ‘Gran Partita’ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart’s Gran Partita is a rare example of a piece written for twelve wind instruments (and a string bass). The piece has seven movements, but is famous for its Adagio, which draws out the unique colors of the instruments.

Fanfare for the Common Man Aaron Copland

A fanfare is a piece of music written to introduce an event, the arrival of someone important ... or an army! Copland was asked to write this piece in 1942, to stir public morale during the war effort.

Percussion Variation from ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ Benjamin Britten

English composer Britten did lots to support music education, writing music for young people to listen to and perform. This piece showcases the instruments of the orchestra, which each take turns to play the tune.

Extracts from Symphony No. 6 Ludwig van Beethoven

A symphony is a piece that brings all the sounds together, and Beethoven wrote nine of them. His Sixth Symphony is subtitled ‘pastoral’, and each of its movement reflects a scene from nature.

Boléro Maurice Ravel

Spanish music and culture fascinated Ravel, who grew up in France close to the Spanish border. Lots of his music illustrates Spain, including this popular ballet and concert piece, which uses snaredrum rhythms and a repeating, folk-infused melody with increasingly intense orchestration. Rachel Leach presenter Rachel Leach was born in Sheffield, UK, and studied composition with Simon Bainbridge, Robert Saxton, and Louis Andriessen. Her music has been recorded by NMC and published by Faber. Rachel has worked within the education departments of many of the UK’s orchestras and opera companies. She has written over 20 pieces for LSO Discovery and 15 community operas, including seven for English Touring Opera. She is the presenter of LSO Discovery’s Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke’s and regularly presents for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Royal College of Music.

The Sing! Program is the Music Academy of the West’s free, after-school choral initiative open to students in Santa Barbara County in 1st through 6th grade. 200 students participate from 30 area elementary schools. A new partnership with the YPC National has created a transformative exchange, merging youth from various backgrounds to nurture their talent and creativity through dynamic music making. Young People’s Chorus of New York City’s founder and artistic director, MacArthur Fellow Francisco Nuñez, together with YPC leaders, will bring choristers and conductors from all over the country in their YPC National Studio and Lab Programs with Sing! this summer in Santa Barbara. The Sing! program’s objectives are to help children: Discover and develop their ability to imagine and express themselves through music. Gain confidence in using their voice to communicate ideas and emotions. Work together to create something larger than themselves. Learn about people and cultures from around the world through singing. Foster a lifelong love for listening to and making music. The London Symphony Orchestra is built on the belief that extraordinary music should be available to everyone, everywhere. From orchestral fans in the concert hall to first time listeners across the UK, Europe, and the world. The London Symphony Orchestra was established in 1904, as one of the first orchestras shaped by its musicians. Since then, generations of remarkable talents have built the LSO’s reputation for uncompromising quality and inspirational repertoires. Today, the LSO is ranked among the world’s top orchestras, with a family of artists that includes Music Director Sir Simon Rattle, Principal Guest Conductors Gianandrea Noseda and François-Xavier Roth, and Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas. In March 2021, it was announced that Sir Antonio Pappano will take up the role of Chief Conductor of the LSO from September 2024. The LSO is Resident Orchestra at the Barbican in the City of London. The Orchestra reaches international audiences through touring and artistic residencies—including with the Aix-en-Provence Festival and Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara—and through digital partnerships and an extensive program of live-streamed and on-demand online broadcasts. Through a world-leading learning and community program, LSO Discovery, the LSO connects people from all walks of life to the power of great music. Based at LSO St Luke’s, the Orchestra’s community and music education center and a leading performance venue on Old Street, LSO Discovery’s reach extends across East London, the UK and the world through both in-person and digital activity. LSO musicians are at the heart of this unique program, leading workshops, mentoring bright young talent, performing at free concerts for the local community and using music to support adults with learning disabilities. LSO musicians also visit children’s hospitals, and lead training programs for music teachers. The ambition behind all of this work is simple: to share the transformative power of classical music with people who would not normally experience it. The impact is unrivaled, and every year, LSO Discovery reaches thousands of people of all ages. In 1999, the LSO formed its own recording label, LSO Live, and revolutionized how live orchestral music is recorded, with over 150 recordings released so far. Overall, the LSO has made more recordings than any other orchestra. As a leading orchestra for film, the LSO has entertained millions with classic scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Shape of Water, and many more. The LSO also uses streaming services to reach a worldwide audience totaling millions of music-lovers who listen online every month. Through inspiring music, educational programs and technological innovations, the LSO’s reach extends far beyond the concert hall. Thanks to the generous support of The Corporation of the City of London, Arts Council England, corporate supporters and individual donors, the LSO is able to continue sharing extraordinary music with as many people as possible, across London, and the world. LSO in SANTA BARBARA The LSO presented a Discovery Workshop at the Music Academy for students of the Santa Barbara Symphony Youth Orchestra, South Coast Youth Band, Santa Barbara Strings, and community students. Rachel Leach helped prepare the Sing! Children’s Chorus for their participation in the Family Concert. 8
