SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA

75th Anniversary Summer Festival Shines 2022 IS A BIG YEAR FOR THE MUSIC ACADEMY.

After a busy spring featuring the momentous residency of the London Symphony Orchestra and the launch of a new Winners Recital Series, it’s finally time to look ahead to the pinnacle of the Academy’s annual offerings: the Summer School and Festival. 136 fellows, 60 faculty and teaching artists, and an audience of more than 20,000 will converge in Santa Barbara to celebrate the 2022 Summer Festival. This summer will feature a reimagined Chamber Music Series, beloved masterclasses, and a new spin on the fan-favorite Picnic Concerts, with all the repertoire selected by Academy fellows. As a gift to audiences, the Festival will open with a Community Concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl, with all tickets priced at only $10. The 75th Anniversary Signature Benefit Event will feature superstar alums, Metropolitan Opera favorite Isabel Leonard and faculty artist pianist Nino Sanikidze, who will be joining forces for an unforgettable performance under the stars on Saturday, June 18. The Innovation Institute will continue to challenge Academy artists with cutting-edge curriculum that addresses the changes needed for classical music to thrive. This includes the Fast Pitch Awards competition, which nurtures experimentation and risk-

taking. Access to technology, media training, and dynamics advisors from the Stanford d. school who fuel the future disruptors of our industry and society round out the Innovation Institute’s offerings.

For decades the Academy has prided Isabel Leonard itself on introducing the world’s leading conductors to the next generation of artists. The Academy Festival Orchestra will be led this summer by Teddy Abrams, Stéphane Denève, Hannu Lintu, and Larry Rachleff, and Academy alum Speranza Scappucci has been selected to lead the final Festival concert. Scappucci is making her Met debut next season following an acclaimed debut at La Scala as their first female Italian conductor. There is no better way to celebrate an anniversary than to bring new music to life. The Academy’s commitment to empowering diverse perspectives exhibits itself best in the commissioning of composers of our time, many of whom will be in residence. London Symphony Orchestra Residency Launches 75th Anniversary Celebrations

WHAT BETTER WAY TO RING IN A milestone year than with a world-

renowned orchestra, all-star alumni, and a wide array of concerts for the community to enjoy? March 24-27, the LSO appeared in the Granada Theatre for three sold-out programs, offering $10 community access and free admission for children.

It ended with a joyous, stupendous community event in a real concert hall celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Music Academy. This had to be the best bargain in concertgoing anywhere since the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s free Hollywood Bowl concert that welcomed Gustavo Dudamel in 2009. – MARK SWED, LA TIMES

In what was undisputedly the orchestral highlight of Santa Barbara’s concert season, the London Symphony Orchestra transformed the Granada Theatre into a gilded room of worldly proportions on Thursday night. – JOSEF WOODARD, SF CLASSICAL VOICE

MARCH 24: LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Music Academy partnered with CAMA for a special opening night performance. The LSO and Sir Simon Rattle wowed the sold-out crowd with “a masterfully realized symphonic evening” (SF Classical Voice) of Béla Bartók, Hector Berlioz, Hannah Kendall, Maurice Ravel, and Jean Sibelius.

100 members of the Music Academy’s Sing! Children’s Chorus joined the LSO for How to Build an Orchestra – a fun and educational concert for all ages to enjoy. They performed two songs composed by LSO Host Rachel Leach led by Sir Simon Rattle, which they rehearsed with her in a special workshop.

MARCH 27: 75TH ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY CONCERT

The final program featured Bruckner’s “Romantic” Symphony and works by Percy Grainger that Mark Swed (LA Times) called “joyous, but also, all of it musically a revelation.” 36 Music Academy alumni all-stars of the Keston MAX Program joined the LSO onstage. Swed continues, “The LSO, no doubt enhanced by the vivacity of young players, sounded fresh and young again, full of granitic energy. Maybe you could compare it with the sensation of going from a traditional gas guzzler to a gutsy electric car.” Phil Channing

Women’s Auxiliary Embraces Connection

ANYONE WHO ENCOUNTERS Auxiliary Chair Judy Astbury

will find her passion and enthusiasm for the organization infectious. Under her new leadership, the Music Academy’s Women’s Auxiliary has undergone a transformation, adding over 50 new members in the past 12 months, for a total membership of 115. “The reason I took on the role,” she shared, “was that I wanted to cultivate that sense of connection and engagement within the membership. I firmly believe that when people are connected, they work better towards a common goal. Everyone needs to be part of the process and feel heard.” The common goal in this case is the Music Academy, specifically supporting the Academy’s Sing! Children’s Chorus. This vibrant, intergenerational volunteer group and social network achieves this goal through their annual dues, fundraising events, vehicle donations, and a grand online auction. “Plus, the Board is fantastic – it’s forward thinking, focused, and FUN – and they are revitalizing the membership. It’s an intergenerational group, including young, powerful women, and their perspective has been invaluable.” “To increase involvement” she adds, “we’ve added six annual

Multi-year violin alum Sandy Seymour’s first experience with the Music Academy was something of a surprise. It was at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition in 1958 and Sandy’s string quartet had just finished performing, when she was approached on stage by two people: Ruth Cowan, president of the Music Academy at that time, and Sascha Jacobson, who taught violin at the Academy. They were there to offer her a scholarship.

It was wonderful being amongst people who were so enthusiastic and so outgoing. It felt like at the Academy I had a wonderful, warm family. Outside of the music, even, there was a warmth and an environment and a love that to me was very inspirational.

Scholarships CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 The more things change, the more they stay the same. 63 years have passed since Sandy first set foot on the Academy’s grounds and much is different. But the overall experience? The friendships, the feeling of family, the transformative education? None of that has changed. More important than any one person, program, or concert, these ideals have been a constant with the Academy for the last 75 years and will remain so far into the future. – Henry Michaels Project Resonance Blog editor, Director of Audience Experience & Engagement, Music Academy of the West

After college, Sandy’s professional musical career took her lots of places. She participated in concert tours throughout North America, performed at Carnegie Hall twice, and as a studio musician she played for movies, TV shows, and recorded with, among others, the likes of Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 1967, she met her husband, Phil, himself a musician who once performed at the White House with Sammy Davis Jr. They were married in 1968 and recently celebrated their 54th Anniversary! Sandy and Phil tired of the touring musician life in 1977. They took what Sandy describes as a “left-turn,” becoming real estate agents who specialized in court-ordered fiduciary sales. They are fortunate to have had great success in their careers, and, as such, they want to give back. “Our mutual love of music has always been our bond and has been a transformative influence in both our lives,” Sandy says. “In recognition of the priceless education the Academy gave me, that propelled me into a long and rewarding career, we are pleased to become members of the Encore Society.”
