Szentpáli Roland: A magyarokhoz – ősbemutató Szentpáli Roland kantátája 2020-ban a Müpa Zeneműpályázatának egyik díjazottja volt. A komponista Berzsenyi Dániel szövegét zenésítette meg, de nem a Kodály által is feldolgozott, 1807-ben írt költeményt („Forr a világ bús tengere, oh magyar!”), hanem egy másik, 1810-ben letisztázott verset („Romlásnak indult hajdan erős magyar!”). A darabban helyet kap narráció és szólóének is, a speciális hangkép kialakításában pedig fontos szerep jut a szólókürtnek és térben elhelyezett további kürtöknek.

Bartók Béla: Kossuth-szimfónia, DD 75a, BB 31 A fiatalkori Bartók-mű Liszt és Richard Strauss szimfonikus költeményeinek esztétikáját követi. Liszthez kötődik annyiban, hogy a mű egyetlen tételből áll, melyben egy tematikus gondolat variációin keresztül valósul meg a darab narratívája, illetve külső programja. Bartók maga így fogalmazott: „A magyar történelemben 1848 egyike a legnevezetesebb esztendőknek: ekkor tört ki a magyar szabadságharc: élet-halál küzdelem, melynek célja volt véglegesen megszabadulni az osztrákok és a Habsburg-dinasztia uralma alól.

A forradalom vezetője, lelke Kossuth Lajos volt. 1849-ben az osztrákok látván, hogy a magyar csapatokkal szemben egyre-másra vereséget szenvednek, segítségül hívták az oroszokat, kiknek sikerült a magyar hadsereget teljesen legyőzniük. Így látszólag örökre megsemmisült a magyar államiság.

Ezek az események szolgálnak a szimfóniai költemény programjának alapjául.” A főtéma Kossuth zenei portréja. Ezt követi a hős társnőjének kérdése, Bartók szavaival: „Mi bú nehezül lelkedre, édes férjem? Kossuth neje, a hűséges hitvestárs aggódva szemléli férje bánatos, gondoktól redős arcát.

Kossuth iparkodik őt megnyugtatni, végre azonban kitör belőle a rég visszafojtott fájdalom: Veszélyben a haza! Merengve néz vissza a dicső múltba: hajdan jobb időket éltünk, majd rosszra fordult sorsunk. Harcra fel! – Kossuth e szavakkal felriad merengéséből; immár elhatározott tény a fegyverfogás.

Jöjjetek, jöjjetek! szép magyar vitézek, szép magyar leventék! Ez Kossuth szózata a magyar nemzet fiaihoz. Közvetlen ezután következik a-mollban a lassan-lassan gyülekező magyar vitézek témája. Kossuth megismétli felhívását az egybegyűlt sereghez, mire az szent fogadalmat tesz a harcban mindhalálig kitartani (3/2 taktus). Pár pillanatra mélységes csönd s aztán halljuk az ellenséges osztrák csapatok lassú közeledtét. Témájuk az osztrák himnusz – Gott erhalte – első, eltorzított taktusai. Összecsapást összecsapás követ, a küzdelem az élet-haláltusa jellegét veszi föl, végre azonban a túlnyomó nyers erő kerekedik felül. Bekövetkezik a nagy katasztrófa, a magyar sereg megmaradt tagjai elbujdosnak. Mindennek vége – az ország legnagyobb gyászt ölt. De még ettől is eltiltják, így tehát: Csöndes minden, csöndes.”

Liszt Ferenc: Les Préludes A Les Préludes Liszt egyik leggyakrabban előadott szimfonikus költeménye.

A kompozíció genezise egészen 1844-ig vezethető vissza. Az első hallásra furcsának tűnő címet (Előjátékok) Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869) Költői elmélkedések című munkája ihlette. A darab programját a vers alapján így határozta meg Liszt: „Mi más is életünk, mint előjátékok szakadatlan sorozata ahhoz az ismeretlen dallamhoz, amelynek első, ünnepélyes hangját a halál csendíti meg? A szív fénylő hajnala a szerelem. Melyikünk sorsát nem zavarja azonban meg a boldogság első áradata után a vihar ereje, amely durva leheletével széttépi a gyengéd illúziókat, villámával lesújtja annak oltárát? És melyik mélyen sebzett lélek nem keres ilyen megrázkódtatások után nyugalmat a természet idilli csendjében és saját emlékeiben? A férfi azonban nem sokáig képes ilyen nyugalomban élni, és mikor a trombita felharsan, elsőnek rohan a csatába, a legveszélyesebb posztra, hogy a küzdelemben ismét visszanyerje önmagát és belső erejét.” Ma már tudjuk, hogy ezt a programot Liszt az utolsó pillanatban, a mű befejezése után illesztette a zenekari darabhoz, ezzel azt a látszatot keltette, mintha a Lamartine-szöveg inspirálta volna, s ezzel a szimfonikus költemény értelmezését hosszú időn át meg is határozza.

A Les Préludes címen megismert mű zenei anyagát eredetileg Joseph Autran (1813–1877) költeményei inspirálták. Liszt négy versével foglalkozott (Les Aquilons – Az északi szél; Les Flots – A hullámok; Les Astres – A csillagok; La Terre – A föld), melyeket kórusciklussá állított volna össze és a Les Quatre Éléments (A négy elem) címmel láttott volna el. A kórusokat zenekari nyitány (Prelúdium) vezeti be, melyet először August Conradi hangszerelt meg. Ezt 1850 körül Joachim Raff átdolgozta, majd Liszt az egész hangszerelést megváltoztatta (1852–1854). Ebben az alkotói fázisban született meg a kompozíció végső címe és a Lamartine-re való utalás.

Haja Zsolt Bariton, Debrecenben született, felsőfokú tanulmányait is itt végezte.

Operaszínpadon 2005-ben debütált, a Magyar Állami Operaházban 2008ban lépett először közönség elé. 2006-ban megnyerte a szegedi Simándy József Énekversenyt, 2007-ben a Ferruccio Tagliavini Nemzetközi Énekversenyt, egy évvel később különdíjat kapott a bécsi Hans Gabor Belvedere Énekversenyen. 2015-ben harmadik helyezést ért el és különdíjat kapott a Competizione dell’Opera nemzetközi énekversenyen. A 2019–2020-as évadban a Magyar Állami Operaház Kamaraénekese volt. Sokoldalú művész, széles repertoárja Mozarttól a romantikus szerzők művein át a modern és a kortárs zenéig terjed.

Bakos-Kiss Gábor 1981-ben született Nyíregyházán. Jogász végzettséget szerzett a Miskolci Egyetemen, majd 2009-ben a Színház- és Filmművészeti Egyetemen diplomázott. 2009–2011 között szabadúszó, 2011-től a debreceni Csokonai Nemzeti Színház, 2014-től a Nemzeti Színház társulatának tagja. A színészet mellett rendez is. A 2018/19-es tanévtől a Kaposvári Egyetem RipplRónai Művészeti Karának színészmesterség-tanára, 2019 februárjától 2020 márciusáig a Váci Dunakanyar Színház művészeti vezetője. A Magyar Versmondók Egyesületének alelnöke, társalapítója és állandó zsűritagja a Kaleidoszkóp Nemzetközi Vers Fesztiválnak és a Nemzeti VERSenynek. Szívügye a versmondás, ebbéli elkötelezettségét is díjazták 2019-ben a Szeleczky Zita-emlékgyűrűvel. 2020-ban Jászai Mari-díjjal tüntették ki.

Cantemus Vegyeskar A Cantemus „kóruscsalád” tagjaként alapították 1998-ban, tagjainak legnagyobb része a nyíregyházi Kodály Zoltán Általános Iskola padjaiban tanult gyerekként. Ma már egyetemista, dolgozó felnőttek, akiknek életében a közös pont a Cantemus. Kezdetben csak kivételes alkalmakra állt össze a kórus.

Megalakulásuk óta vezetőjükkel, Szabó Soma Liszt-díjas karnaggyal számos nemzetközi versenyen bizonyítottak, hazánk legjobb szimfonikus zenekaraival működnek együtt, rangos fesztiválokon, európai koncertturnékon vesznek részt. A kórus repertoárján az oratorikus és a cappella irodalom minden stílusa megtalálható a reneszánsztól napjaink zenéjéig. Több CD-lemez, illetve rádió- és tévéfelvételek őrzik hangjukat.

Hollerung Gábor Liszt Ferenc-díjas karmester, karvezető, érdemes művész, a Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar ügyvezető zeneigazgatója, a Budapesti Akadémiai Kórustársaság vezető karnagya, a Zempléni Fesztivál művészeti vezetője, a Budapesti Nemzetközi Kórusverseny alapítója és művészeti vezetője. Tanulmányait a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Főiskolán végezte, ahol Vásárhelyi Zoltán, Párkai István és Kórodi András voltak a tanárai, majd Eric Ericson (1975), Kurt Masur (1978) és Somogyi László (1981) mesterkurzusain képezte tovább magát. 1989-től a Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar vezető karmestere volt, 2001-től az együttes ügyvezető zeneigazgatója. Számos európai zenekarral való együttműködésén kívül fellépett az Izraeli Filharmonikus Zenekar, a Cincinnati Szimfonikus Zenekar, a Brazil Szimfonikus Zenekar, a Sanghaji Szimfonikus Zenekar, a Kantoni Szimfonikus Zenekar és a Tajvani Nemzeti Szimfonikus Zenekar vendégkarmestereként. Rendszeresen tart kurzust fiatal karvezetőknek és karmestereknek Magyarországon, szinte valamennyi európai országban, valamint az USA-ban, Tajvanon az elmúlt másfél évtizedben minden nyáron vezetett mesterkurzust.

Budapesti Akadémiai Kórustársaság A Budapesti Akadémiai Kórustársaság 1957-ben alakult a KISZ Központi Művészegyüttes Egyetemi Énekkaraként. 1980-tól Hollerung Gábor vette át a kórus irányítását, és azóta is a kórus művészeti vezetője, az énekkar karigazgatója Balassa Ildikó. Alapítása óta a kórus sikerrel vett részt Európa valamennyi neves kórusversenyén, legnagyobb elismerésük a Deb­receni Bartók Béla Nemzetközi Kórusverseny nagydíja és a Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod első díja volt, ahol az énekkar a „Világ Kórusa” elismerést is megkapta. Állandó fellépője a kórusolimpiák gálakoncertjeinek, emellett rendszeresen fellép különböző hazai fesztiválokon. Ismert klasszikus művek interpretálása mellett az énekkar fontos célkitűzése a kortárs zene ápolása és új magyar kórusművek bemutatása, megismertetése.

Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar Magyarország egyik legdinamikusabb és legsokoldalúbb szimfonikus zenekara. A fenntartó Budafok-Tétény Budapest XXII. Kerület Önkormányzata jóvoltából 1993 óta hivatásos együttes Hollerung Gábor Liszt-díjas karnagy, érdemes művész irányításával rövid idő alatt előkelő helyet vívott ki magának a magyar zenei életben, az elmúlt években az ország egyik vezető együttesévé vált. A zenekar olyan hazai és külföldi muzsikusokkal játszott együtt, mint Shlomo Mintz, Elena Bashkirova, Jaakko Ryhänen, Miklósa Erika, Rost Andrea, Rivka Golani, Yoav Talmi, Roberto Paternostro, Jörg-Peter Weigle, Michael Stern, Tatjana Vassilieva, Kocsis Zoltán, Jandó Jenő, Bogányi Gergely, Geiger György, Baráti Kristóf, Kokas Katalin, Kelemen Barnabás és még sokan mások. 2018 januárjától Guido Mancusi – a Schönbrunn Orchestra művészeti vezetője – lett a zenekar első vendégkarmestere, rezidens zeneszerzője pedig Gyöngyösi Levente, a generációja egyik legkiemelkedőbb zeneszerzője.

Roland Szentpáli: To the Hungarians – world premiere Roland Szentpáli’s cantata was an award winner of Müpa’s Composer Competition in 2020. The composer set to music the text of Dániel Berzsenyi, though not the 1807 poem that Kodály used (“Forr a világ bús tengere, oh magyar!”), but its 1810 version (“Romlásnak indult hajdan erős magyar!”).

The piece includes narration and solo voice, and the special soundscape owes much to the solo horn and additional horns arranged in space.

Béla Bartók: Kossuth Symphony, DD 75a, BB 31 Bartók’s youthful work follows the aesthetic of symphonic poems by Liszt and Richard Strauss. It is indebted to Liszt insofar as the work comprises a single movement, in which the narrative and external programme are presented through the variations of a thematic idea. Bartók said of the programme: “1848 is one of the memorable years in Hungarian history: this was when the war of independence broke out, a life-or-death struggle to free Hungarians from the rule of the Austrians and the Habsburg Dynasty.

Lajos Kossuth was the leader, the soul of the revolution. In 1849, when the Austrians saw that they were losing battle after battle against the Hungarian troops, they called the Russians to help them, and the Russians succeeded in defeating the Hungarian army entirely. Hungarian statehood seemed to have been destroyed forever. These events serve as the basis of the symphonic poem.” The main theme is a musical portrait of Kossuth. It is followed by the question of the hero’s partner. In Bartók’s words: “What sorrow weighs down on your soul, my sweet husband? Kossuth’s faithful wife watches her husband’s sad, troubled face anxiously. Kossuth tries to reassure her before his pain, long suppressed, bursts out: The country is in danger! He muses on the glorious past: we used to live better times, but then our fate took a turn for the worse. To arms! Kossuth wakes from his reverie; the decision is to take up arms. Come, come! fine Hungarian youths, Hungarian warriors! This is Kossuth’s appeal to the Hungarian nation. This is followed immediately by the theme of the slowly gathering Hungarian soldiers, in A minor. Kossuth repeats his appeal to the army, which swears to fight to the death (3/2 time). Silence reigns for a few moments, and then the slow approach of the Austrian troops can be heard. Their theme is based on the first few, distorted measures of the Austrian hymn, Gott erhalte. One clash follows another, the struggle is mortal, with the overwhelming brute force getting the upper hand. There is a great catastrophe, and the surviving Hungarian soldiers go into hiding. Everything is lost, the country is in deep mourning. But even mourning is prohibited, so what is left is silence, everything is silent.”

Ferenc Liszt: Les Préludes Les Préludes is one of Liszt’s most frequently performed symphonic poems.

Its genesis began in 1844. The title, which may at first sound strange, was inspired by the Nouvelles méditations poétiques of Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869). Liszt described the programme of the piece thus: “What else is our life but a series of preludes to that unknown Hymn, the first and solemn note of which is intoned by Death? – Love is the glowing dawn of all existence; but what is the fate where the first delights of happiness are not interrupted by some storm, the mortal blast of which dissipates its fine illusions, the fatal lightning of which consumes its altar; and where is the cruelly wounded soul which, on issuing from one of these tempests, does not endeavour to rest his recollection in the calm serenity of life in the fields?

Nevertheless man hardly gives himself up for long to the enjoyment of the beneficent stillness which at first he has shared in Nature’s bosom, and when ‘the trumpet sounds the alarm,’ he hastens, to the dangerous post, whatever the war may be, which calls him to its ranks, in order at last to recover in the combat full consciousness of himself and entire possession of his energy.” It is now evident that Liszt added this programme at the last minute, after completing the orchestral piece, in an attempt to make the impression that it was inspired by Lamartine’s poem – and setting the direction for interpretation for a long time.

The musical material of what we have come to know as Les Préludes was originally inspired by the poems of Joseph Autran (1813–1877). Liszt set four poems to music (Les Aquilons – The North Winds; Les Flots – The Floods; Les Astres – The Stars; La Terre – The Earth), which were to form a cycle of choral works under the title of Les Quatre Éléments (The Four Elements). The choruses are introduced by an orchestral Overture, which was first orchestrated by August Conradi. His work was revised by Joachim Raff around 1850, and then Liszt changed the complete orchestration (1852–1854). It was during this creative phase that the final title and the reference to Lamartine were added.

Zsolt Haja The baritone was born in Debrecen, where he also attended university. He made his debut on the opera stage in 2005, and first sang at the Hungarian State Opera in 2008. In 2006 he won the Simándy József Singing Competition in Szeged, in 2007 the Ferruccio Tagliavini International Singing Competition, and a year later brought away the special prize from the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna. In 2015 he finished third, and received a special prize, at Competizione dell’Opera, an international sing-

ing competition. In the 2019–2020 season he was a chamber singer of the Hungarian State Opera. A versatile artist, his repertoire runs a wide gamut from Mozart and Romantic composers to modern and contemporary music.

Gábor Bakos-Kiss He was born in Nyíregyháza in 1981. Earning first a diploma in law at Miskolc University, in 2009 he graduated at the Academy of Drama and Film. He was a freelancer from 2009 until 2011, when he joined the Csokonai National Theatre in Debrecen. Since 2014 he has been a member of the Hungarian National Theatre’s company. In addition to acting, he also directs productions. He has been teaching acting at the Rippl-Rónai Faculty of Arts at Kaposvár University since the 2018/2019 academic year. From February 2019 until March 2020 he was artistic director of Dunakanyar Theatre, Vác.

He is Vice President of the Association of Hungarian Poem Reciters, and co-founder and a permanent jury member of the Kaleidoscope International Poetry Festival and of the National Competition of Verse. His commitment to poetry recital was acknowledged with the Szeleczky Zita Memorial Ring in 2019. In 2020, he was awarded the Jászai Mari Prize.

Cantemus Mixed Choir The choir was founded as a member of the Cantemus “family” in 1998. Most of its singers were once pupils of the Kodály Zoltán Elementary School in Nyíregyháza. They are now adults who work or attend university, and for whom Cantemus is the common denominator. Initially the choir met only for special occasions. Directed by Liszt Prize-winning choirmaster Soma Szabó, the group has taken part at numerous international competitions, has collaborated with the best Hungarian orchestras, and performed at presti­gious festivals and European concert tours. The choir’s repertoire includes all styles of the oratorial and a cappella literature, from the Renaissance to contemporary music. They can be heard on several CDs, radio and television recordings.

Gábor Hollerung The Liszt Prize-winning conductor and choirmaster is an Artist of Merit, the managing music director of the Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra, principal conductor of the Budapest Academic Choral Society, artistic director of Zemplén Festival, and founder and director of the Budapest International Choir Competition. He studied at the Liszt Academy, where Zoltán Vásárhelyi, István Párkai and András Kórodi were his professors. He went on to attend the masterclasses of Eric Ericson (1975), Kurt Masur (1978) and László

Somogyi (1981). He has been principal conductor of the Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra since 1989, and its managing music director since 2001. In addition to numerous European orchestras, he has been a guest conductor with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra. He regularly holds courses for young choirmasters and conductors, in Hungary, almost every European country, and the United States as well. He has given a masterclass in Taiwan every summer for the past fifteen years.

Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra One of the most dynamic and versatile symphony orchestras in Hungary turned professional in 1993, thanks to the support of its funder, the Municipality of Budapest’s 22nd District, Budafok-Tétény. They soon attained a distinguished position in Hungarian musical life under the directorship of Gábor Hollerung. With the Liszt Prize and Artist of Merit award winning conductor at the helm, the ensemble became one of the country’s leading orchestras in recent years. They have collaborated with such Hungarian and

foreign artists as Shlomo Mintz, Elena Bashkirova, Jaakko Ryhänen, Erika Miklósa, Andrea Rost, Rivka Golani, Yoav Talmi, Roberto Paternostro, Jörg-Peter Weigle, Michael Stern, Tatjana Vassilieva, Zoltán Kocsis, Jenő Jandó, Gergely Bogányi, György Geiger, Kristóf Baráti, Katalin Kokas, Barnabás Kelemen, and many others. Since January 2018, Guido Mancusi, artistic director of Schönbrunn Orchestra, has been the orchestra’s first guest conductor, while Levente Gyöngyösi, one of the most outstanding composers of his generation, has been its resident composer.

Budapest Academic Choral Society The Budapest Academic Choral Society was founded in 1957 as the University Choir of the KISZ Central Art Ensemble. The present artistic director, Gábor Hollerung took over the helm in 1980, and its choirmaster is Ildikó Balassa. The choir has successfully participated in all the renowned choir competitions in Europe, their greatest success being the Grand Prize of the Béla Bartók International Choir Competition in Debrecen, and the first prize of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, where they were named “Choir of the World.” They are regularly featured at the gala concerts of the Choir Olympics, and frequently perform at Hungarian festivals. In addition to the interpretation of well-known classical works, a key ambition of the choir is to nurture contemporary music and to present and introduce new Hungarian choral works.
