Liszt Ferenc: Dante-szonáta (Après une lecture du Dante – Fantasia quasi Sonata), S. 161/7 Feltűnő, hogy az olaszországi élmények (szemben a Zarándokévek első, svájci kötetének darabjaival) nem a tájhoz, természethez, hanem főképpen a régmúltban született műalkotásokhoz – festményekhez, szobrokhoz, költeményekhez – kapcsolódnak. A darabok java részét Liszt a weimari években dolgozta át, a sorozat 1858-ban jelent meg. A közismert Dante-szonáta első vázlatai 1837-ből származnak. Liszt 1839-ben Bécsben mutatta be ezt a korai változatot, amelyet tíz évvel később átdolgozott. A cím kettős irodalmi célzás: egyrészt a zeneszerző Dante olvasása közben kapott benyomásaira, másrészt Victor Hugo azonos című költeményére utal. De érdekesen rímel a darab címe a formai megoldásra is, mintegy a visszájára fordítva Beethoven op. 27-es darabjainak „sonata quasi una fantasia” megjelölését. A beet­ hoveni szonáták viszonylatában bizonyos mentegetőzés jellege volt ennek a feliratnak, amely a tételek szoros kapcsolatát, ugyanakkor a szonáta­ formájú nyitótétel elmaradását jelezte. Lisztnél ez a felirat nem mentegetőzés, hanem ígéret: a klasszikus nagyforma utolsó, összefoglaló felidézésének perspektíváját tárja fel. A Dante-szonáta formastratégiája számos tekintetben a h-moll szonáta előtanulmányának is tekinthető.

Camille Saint-Saëns – Liszt Ferenc: Haláltánc A Danse macabre egyike volt annak a négy szimfonikus költeménynek, amelyet Saint-Saëns az 1870-es években mestere és barátja, Liszt Ferenc hatására komponált, ezzel meghonosítva Franciaországban a Liszt által teremtett új műfajt. A darab első előadására 1875-ben került sor a párizsi Châtelet Színházban, Édouard Colonne vezényletével. A Franciaországon kívüli első európai premiert Budapesten tartották. A Vasárnapi Ujság szerint nagy hatása volt a mesterien hangszerelt, „phantastikus és bizarr” zeneműnek, amelyet Erkel Sándor vezényletével 1876. november 8-án mutatott be a Filharmóniai Társaság zenekara a Vigadóban. A mű rövidesen Liszt Ferenc briliáns zongoraátiratában is felcsendült: 1877 januárjában a mester egyik kedvenc tanítványa, Sophie Menter – az átírt darab ajánlásának címzettje – játszotta a Zeneakadémián. Az átiratot Liszt még a szimfonikus költemény budapesti premierje előtt készítette, és a következő, kedvesen szerény sorok kíséretében küldte el „drága barátjának”: „Amikor ma elküldöm Önnek Danse macabre-jának átiratát, arra kérem, bocsássa meg nekem ügyetlenségemet, amellyel zongorára dolgoztam át partitúrájának csodálatos színeit. A lehetetlenre senki nem kötelezhető. Zenekar módjára játszani a zongorán még senkinek nem adatott meg. Mégis mindig törekedni kell az Ideál felé, minden tökéletlen és hozzávetőleges módon. Az élet és a Művészet, úgy vélem, csupán erre való.”

Camille Saint-Saëns: 2. (g-moll) mazurka, op. 24; 1. (g-moll) mazurka, op. 21 Saint-Saëns három mazurkát komponált zongorára (a harmadikat h-mollban, op. 86), a műfaji megjelölés miatt pedig azonnal Chopinre asszociálhat a mai hallgató. Igazság szerint csak az op. 21-es mazurka utal (halványan) a lengyel zeneszerzőre, a másik két darab inkább a párizsi zenei szalonok stílusára reflektál. Mindegyik kompozíció nagyon ihletett és sok kreatív ötletet vonultat fel, különösen az op. 24-es darab, mely talán a leginkább extravagáns.

Camille Saint-Saëns: Valse nonchalante, op. 110 E bájos és remekbe szabott Desz-dúr darabot a 19. század legvégén, 1898ban publikálta Saint-Saëns. Kiadójának írt levelében így mutatta be új darabját: „Uraim! Megtiszteltetés számomra, hogy bejelenthetem leányom születését, aki a Valse nonchalante névre hallgat, hangnemében öt bé van.

A művet a Le Figaro karácsonyi számába szánom, nem hittem, hogy engedélyt kell kérnem, hogy ezt a kegyet megadhassam a fent említett újságnak.”

A tételt 1921-ben a Párizsban élő, lengyel származású balerina, Stacia Napierkowska számára zenekarra is átdolgozta.

Liszt Ferenc: 2. Mefisztó-keringő, S. 515 Különösen nagy hatást gyakorolt Liszt zeneszerzői fantáziájára Faust és Mefisztó alakja. Elsősorban nem Goethe, hanem Nikolaus Lenau 1836-ban megjelent műve inspirálta, Mefisztó figurája pedig egy egész műcsoport (szinte kivétel nélkül táncok) témájává vált. A második Mefisztó-valcer zenekari változatának bemutatója Budapesten volt 1881. március 9-én.

Ajánlása – a zongoraverziónak éppúgy, mint a nagyzenekari kompozíciónak – Camille Saint-Saënsnak szól. Kroó György írja: „A Mefisztó-keringők sorában vízválasztó szerepe van, mert Liszt itt elszakad Lenautól, az első Mefisztó-keringőt ihlető irodalmi programtól. Amint e második keringőt indító és kicsendítő ördögi hangköz jelzi, Mefisztó a zeneszerző számára itt zenei szimbólummá értékelődik át, ugyanakkor virtuóz jellegével még őrzi az első tánc pódiumkarakterét. Formája, lassú középrészének hangulata az első Mefisztó-keringőre utal. Magának a valcer lüktetésének az elhomályosítása mégis félreérthetetlenül jelzi a Mefisztó-gondolat metamorfózisát Liszt műhelyében.”

Liszt Ferenc: Két legenda, S. 175 – Assisi Szent Ferenc a madaraknak prédikál; Paolai Szent Ferenc a hullámokon jár A 13. század elején Assisiben, jómódú családban született Ferenc egy belső hangnak engedelmeskedve a szegénységet választotta, küldetése a szegények gyámolítása és vigasztalása lett. Bő két évszázaddal később, Paolában egy gyermektelen, korosodó házaspár Assisi Szent Ferenc közbenjárásáért könyörgött, s imájuk meghallgatásra talált: fiuk született, aki a hála és a tisztelet jeléül a Ferenc nevet kapta. Amikor tizennégy éves lett, szüleivel elzarándokolt Assisibe, és a hagyomány szerint ekkor határozta el, hogy remeteként fog élni. Aszketikus magányában megvilágosodott, s csakhamar tanítványok szegődtek melléje. Liszt számára mindkét szent különösen fontos volt, alakjukat, tanításukat több darabjában is megidézte, s ő maga is az önzetlenség legendás példájává vált.

A zongoradarabok 1866-os kiadásának francia nyelvű előszavában Liszt közli a műveket közvetlenül inspiráló történeteket, és idéz egy korabeli népkönyvből is (Fioretti di San Francesco – Szent Ferenc virágos kertje). „Húgocskáim, madarak! Ti igen sokkal tartoztok a Teremtőnek, azért mindig és mindenütt kötelesek vagytok dicsérni őt. Mert kétszeres, sőt háromszoros ruházattal látott el benneteket; szabadságot adott nektek, oda röpülhettek, ahová akartok; Noé bárkájában megőrizte fajotokat, hogy ki ne vesszetek. Hálával tartoztok a levegőért, amelynek uraivá tett.

Azután gondoljátok meg, hogy se nem vettek, se nem arattok, Isten mégis gondoskodik rólatok. Inni ad a folyókból és forrásokból, menedéket nyújt a hegyekben és völgyekben, helyet biztosít a fészekrakáshoz a fák lombos ágain. Azután még fonni és szőni sem tudtok, Isten ruház föl benneteket és fiókáitokat. Jótéteményeiből, amelyekkel elhalmozott, láthatjátok, mennyire szeret Teremtőtök. Őrizkedjetek tehát húgocskáim, a hálátlanság bűnétől, s azon legyetek, hogy szüntelenül áldjátok Istent.”

A második, E-dúr legenda azt a történetet meséli el, melyet Liszt Giuseppe Miscimarra Paolai Szent Ferencről írt regényes életrajzából emelt át.

Ferenc és két társa – miután egy kapzsi hajós nem akarja a pénztelen utazókat átvinni Szicíliába – száraz lábbal kelnek át a messinai szoroson.

Liszt utal Eduard Jakob von Steine rajzára is, melyet a kotta címlapjára is kinyomtattak.

Bár a zenét hallgatva a két jelenet tökéletesen elképzelhető, mégis hiba lenne, ha e darabokban pusztán az ábrázolás realisztikus vonásaira figyelnénk fel, a Két legenda ugyanis inkább tűnik látomásnak, víziónak, hallucinációnak, egy sajátos meditatív, pszichés állapot zenei transzformációjának. E lélekállapot Lisztet egy sor, az 1860-as években meglehetősen szokatlan zenei megoldáshoz és színhatáshoz vezette el.

Ránki Fülöp A fiatal magyar zongoristageneráció egyik kiemelkedő művésze. 2018ban szerezte meg mesterdiplomáját a Zeneakadémián, de máris komoly múlt áll mögötte: fellépett Magyarország legfontosabb koncerttermei­ ben, többek között a Zeneakadémia Nagytermében és a Bartók Béla Nemzeti Hangversenyteremben, emellett Portóban, Rómában, Bécsben, Isztambulban, valamint franciaországi és japán zongorafesztiválokon is megfordult. Szólistaként többek között Keller András és Kocsis Zoltán vezényletével játszott, és több bemutatón is részt vett: Dukay Barnabás jó néhány szóló- és háromzongorás művének ősbemutatóján, illetve Olivier Messiaen két jelentős zenekari művének magyarországi premierjén is közreműködött. 2021 és 2024 között a Magyar Művészeti Akadémia Művészeti Ösztöndíjprogramjának ösztöndíjasa.

Ferenc Liszt: Dante Sonata (Après une lecture du Dante – Fantasia quasi Sonata), S. 161/7 It is striking that the majority of Liszt’s Italian experiences are connected to works of old art – a painting, sculpture or poem – rather than the land and nature, as was the case with the first, Swiss volume of Années de pèlerinage.

Liszt revised most of the pieces during his Weimar years, and published the series in 1858. He committed to paper the first sketches of the well-known Dante Sonata in 1837. In 1839 he presented an early version in Vienna, which he would revise ten years later. The title evokes two literary works, referring to the composer’s experiences while reading Dante, and to Victor Hugo’s poem of the same title. The formal solution of the piece is also alluded to in the title, turning, as it were, Beethoven’s designation of his Op. 27 pieces as “sonata quasi una fantasia.” In the context of Beethoven’s other sonatas, this amounted to making excuses for the lack of substantial links between the movements and the absence of an opening movement in the sonata form. With Liszt, the title is not a defence but a promise, offering vistas of a last, synthetic evocation of the classical form. The Dante Sonata’s strategy of form can, in many regards, be considered a study for the sonata in B minor.

Camille Saint-Saëns – Ferenc Liszt: Danse macabre Danse macabre was one of the four symphonic poems Saint-Saëns composed in the 1870s following the example of his friend and mentor, Ferenc Liszt, introducing in France the genre the latter created. The work was first performed in 1875 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with Édouard Colonne wielding the baton. The first non-French performance took place in the Budapest

Vigadó, on 8 November 1876. Vasárnapi Ujság, a weekly, praised the “fantastic and bizarre” composition for its masterful orchestration. The Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Sándor Erkel. Liszt created a brilliant piano adaptation, which he dedicated to Sophie Menter, one of his favourite pupils, who premiered it in January 1877, at the Budapest Academy of Music. Liszt had written his adaptation before the Budapest premiere of the symphonic poem, and sent it to his “dear friend” with these kindly modest lines: “In sending you today the transcription of your ‘Danse macabre,’ I beg you to excuse my unskilfulness in reducing the marvellous colouring of the score to the possibilities of the piano. No one is bound by the impossible. To play an orchestra on the piano is not yet given to anyone. Nevertheless we must always stretch towards the Ideal across all the more or less dogged and insufficient forms.

It seems to me that Life and Art are only good for that.”

Camille Saint-Saëns: Mazurka No. 2 in G minor, Op. 24; Mazurka No. 1 in G minor, Op. 21 Saint-Saëns composed three mazurkas for piano, and the modern listener is likely to think of Chopin when encountering the titles. As a matter of fact, it is only the first (Op. 21) mazurka that alludes (slightly) to the Polish composer, while the second (Op. 24) and third (Op. 86, B minor) reflect on the style of the musical salons of Paris. Each of the three is a highly inspired composition, with plenty of creative ideas, and this especially the case with the second, which is probably the most extravagant of them all.

Camille Saint-Saëns: Valse nonchalante, Op. 110 Charming and exquisite, this piece in D flat major was published by SaintSaëns in 1898. He introduced it to his publisher in his letter thus: “Gentlemen! I have the honour of announcing the birth of a daughter answering to the name of Valse nonchalante, with five flats in the key signature. It is intended for the ‘Christmas Number’ of Le Figaro illustré and I did not believe I had to request your authorisation to grant this favour to the aforesaid newspaper.” In 1921 he created an orchestral version for Stacia Napierkowska, the Polish ballerina who lived in Paris.

Ferenc Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No. 2, S. 515 The figures of Faust and Mephisto greatly stimulated Liszt’s imagination as a composer. The chief source of inspiration was not Goethe but Nikolaus Lenau’s 1836 work, and the figure of Mephisto became the subject of an entire group of works (almost exclusively dances). The orchestral version of the Mephisto Waltz No. 2 was premiered in Budapest on 9 March 1881. Both the piano and the orchestral variants were dedicated to Camille Saint-

Saëns. “It was a watershed in the series of the Mephisto waltzes,” wrote György Kroó, “because Liszt departed from Lenau, the literary programme that inspired the first Mephisto waltz. As indicated by the infernal interval with which this second waltz starts and ends, Mephisto had transformed into a musical symbol for the composer, while its virtuosic traits still keep the podium character of the first dance. Its form and the mood of the slow middle section refer to the first Mephisto waltz. Muting the throb of the waltz itself, however, is a clear sign that the idea of Mephisto is undergoing a metamorphosis in Liszt’s laboratory.”

Ferenc Liszt: Two Legends, S. 175 – St Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds; St Francis of Paola Walking on the Wave In the early 13th century, in Assisi, Francis, who was born into a well-to-do family, obeyed an inner voice and chose to live in poverty, making it his mission to care for and comfort the poor. Over two centuries later, in Paola, a childless couple, advanced in age, prayed to St Francis of Assisi for the gift of a child. When their son was born, they named him Francis out of gratitude and respect. When he was fourteen, the family made a pilgrimage to Assisi.

According to tradition, it was then that the young Francis decided to lead the life of a hermit. He became enlightened in his ascetic solitude, and was soon joined by disciples. Both saints were very important for Liszt, who evoked their figures and teachings in several of his works, and who himself became a legendary exemplar of selflessness.

In the French preface to the 1866 edition of the piano pieces, Liszt relates the stories that directly inspired the works, and cites a popular publication of the time (Fioretti di San Francesco – The Flower Garden of Saint Francis).

“Much are you bound to God, birds, my sisters and everywhere and always must you praise him for the free flight you everywhere have; for the double and triple covering; for the painted and decorated robe; for the food prepared without your labour; for the song taught you by the Creator; for your number multiplied by God’s blessing; for your seed preserved by God in the ark; for the clement air allotted to you. You neither sow nor reap, and God feeds you; and has given you rivers and springs to drink at, mountains and hills, rocks and wild goats for refuge, and high trees for nesting; and though you know neither how to spin nor to weave, He gives both you and your children all the garments you need. Whence much must the Creator love you, Who confers so many blessings. Therefore take care, my small bird sisters, never to be ungrateful, but always strive to praise God.”

The second Legend takes its story from Giuseppe Miscimarra’s fictional biography of St Francis of Paola. When a greedy captain refused to take the moneyless travellers to Sicily for free, Francis and his companion crossed the Strait of Messina with dry feet. Liszt also refers to a drawing by Eduard Jakob von Steine, which was reproduced on the cover of the sheet music.

Though it is easy to picture the two scenes while listening to the music, it would be a mistake to concentrate on the realistic traits of representation. More than anything, the Two Legends appear to be visions or hallucinations, the musical representation of a peculiar, meditative state. This state of mind led Liszt to a series of musical solutions and colour effects that were rather unusual in the 1860s.

Fülöp Ránki Fülöp Ránki is a particularly remarkable member of the young generation of Hungarian pianists. Though he earned his master’s degree at the Liszt Acade­my in 2018, he has quite a performing history: he has given concerts in Hungary’s most important venues, including the Main Hall of the Liszt Academy and the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, and has also played in Porto, Rome, Vienna, Istanbul, and at piano festivals in France and Japan.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with such artists as András Keller and Zoltán Kocsis. He has been involved in the premiere of many a work, including the world premieres of several of Barnabás Dukay’s pieces for solo piano and three pianos, and the Hungarian premiere of two important orchestral compositions by Olivier Messiaen. Between 2021–2024, he is an awardee of the Hungarian Academy of Art’s Arts Scholarship Programme.
