4.1 Liszt: Amit a hegyen hallani (Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne) Liszt: Tasso, Gyász és diadal (Tasso, Lamento e trionfo) Liszt Ferenc: Amit a hegyen hallani (Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne) A romantika korában újra népszerűvé váló panteizmus, természetvallás egyik jellegzetes és szép megnyilatkozása a Victor Hugo azonos című költeménye nyomán írt szimfonikus költemény, az Amit a hegyen hallani, vagy ahogy rövidebb címén emlegetni szokták: a Hegyi szimfónia.

A vers a természetben az örök létezés szimbólumára ismer rá, Liszt darabja a természet és az emberi lét párosáról, ellentétéről szól, és aligha kell indokolni, hogy több mint másfél évszázad elteltével mennyire aktuálissá vált ez a mű. Komponálásához Liszt 1848-ban kezdett hozzá, és 1850 februárjában mutatta be a weimari nagyhercegi udvarban. „Miért van, hogy az Úr örökre összeházasította a természet dalát az emberiség fájdalmas kiáltásaival? Liszt a költő végkérdését a világprobléma erejéig fokozza fel; az emberiség fájdalmát tragikus istenkeresésként interpretálja e munka gerincét képező hatalmas modulatorikus részekben, s Hugo gondolatának legmélyebb ösztönéig merül, amikor darabjának kezdetével és befejezésével megmutatja, hogy a költő az emberi zsivajból szeretne a természet gyógyító erejéhez és nyugalmához menekülni” – írta Molnár Antal.

Liszt Ferenc: Tasso, Gyász és diadal (Tasso, Lamento e trionfo) A kompozíció Goethe születésének 100. évfordulójához (is) kapcsolódik.

Weimarban nagyszabású ünnepséggel emlékeztek meg a város történetében meghatározó szerepet játszó költőről, a Liszt irányítása alatt álló színházban a hányatott sorsú olasz költőfejedelemről, Torquato Tassóról írt drámáját mutatták be. Liszt ehhez az előadáshoz komponált nyitányt (1849), melynek revideált változatát szimfonikus költeményeinek sorába illesztette. A darab eszmei mondanivalója nem annyira Goethe színművéhez, mint inkább Byron Tasso panasza című költeményéhez kapcsolódik, mely az önkény által elnyomott művész keserű monológja. A darab zenéje egy 1840-es velencei emlékhez is kötődik. Liszt gondolások előadásában hallott énekelt részleteket Tasso főművéből, a Megszabadított Jeruzsálemből, a dallamot le is jegyezte, és ebből bontakozik ki az egy évtizeddel későbbi nyitány zenéje. Ő maga így fogalmazott: „Tasso Ferrarában szeretett és szenvedett, Rómában megdicsőült, Velencében pedig mindmáig él a nép dalaiban.” E gondolat nemcsak a Tasso című szimfonikus költemény (1854) programja, de azt a reményt is kifejezi, mely a zeneszerző Lisztet egész életében foglalkoztatta. A kompozíció partitúrája 1856-ban jelent

meg, előszavában Liszt így írt: Byron „bármilyen megkapóan, nemesen és ékesszólóan tolmácsolta a rabságban sínylődő Tasso panaszát, szívet tépő fájdalmát a Lamentációban, ezt nem egészítette ki a Diadallal, amellyel a kései, de annál fényesebb igazságszolgáltatás övezte… Ezt az ellentétet én már a mű címében világosan ki akartam fejezni, és arra törekedtem, hogy hangokkal ábrázoljam az égbekiáltó ellentmondást.”

4.2 Liszt: Les Préludes Liszt: Orfeusz Liszt: Prométheusz Liszt: Mazeppa Liszt Ferenc: Les Préludes A Les Préludes Liszt egyik leggyakrabban előadott szimfonikus költeménye. A kompozíció genezise egészen 1844-ig vezethető vissza. Az első hallásra furcsának tűnő címet (Előjátékok) Alphonse de Lamartine (1790– 1869) Költői elmélkedések című munkája ihlette. A darab programját a vers alapján így határozta meg Liszt: „Mi más is életünk, mint előjátékok szakadatlan sorozata ahhoz az ismeretlen dallamhoz, amelynek első, ünnepélyes hangját a halál csendíti meg? A szív fénylő hajnala a szerelem. Melyikünk sorsát nem zavarja azonban meg a boldogság első áradata után a vihar ereje, amely durva leheletével széttépi a gyengéd illúziókat, villámával lesújtja annak oltárát? És melyik mélyen sebzett lélek nem keres ilyen megrázkódtatások után nyugalmat a természet idilli csendjében és saját emlékeiben? A férfi azonban nem sokáig képes ilyen nyugalomban élni, és mikor a trombita felharsan, elsőnek rohan a csatába, a legveszélyesebb posztra, hogy a küzdelemben ismét visszanyerje önmagát és belső erejét.”

Ma már tudjuk, hogy ezt a programot Liszt az utolsó pillanatban, a mű befejezése után illesztette a zenekari darabhoz, ezzel azt a látszatot keltette, mintha a Lamartine-szöveg inspirálta volna, ami a szimfonikus költemény értelmezését hosszú időn át meg is határozta.

A Les Préludes címen megismert mű zenei anyagát eredetileg Joseph Autran (1813–1877) költeményei inspirálták. Liszt négy versével foglalkozott (Les Aquilons – Az északi szél; Les Flots – A hullámok; Les Astres – A csillagok; La Terre – A föld), melyeket kórusciklussá állított volna össze és a Les Quatre Éléments (A négy elem) címmel látott volna el. A kórusokat zenekari nyitány (Prelúdium) vezeti be, melyet először August Conradi hangszerelt meg. Ezt 1850 körül Joachim Raff átdolgozta, majd Liszt az egész hangszerelést megváltoztatta (1852–1854). Ebben az alkotói fázisban született meg a kompozíció végső címe és a Lamartine-re való utalás.

Liszt Ferenc: Orfeusz Liszt a weimari udvari színház számára komponálta a darabot, mely első alkalommal Gluck azonos című operájának keretzenéjeként hangzott el 1854 februárjában. A kompozíció nem mutat kapcsolatot Gluck operájával, s az is szembetűnő, hogy a mitikus történet elmesélésére sem törekszik. Orfeusz alakjának megidézésére Lisztnek zeneszerzői ars poeticája megfogalmazása miatt van szüksége. A szimfonikus költemény partitúrájának előszavában így fogalmaz: „Szerettük volna itt megvalósítani a minden műalkotásból kiáradó, derűsen embernemesítő dallamot, ennek édes energiáját, fenséges hangzását; hullámzását, amely lágy, mint az elíziumi mezők fuvallata; fokozatos felemelkedését, amely a tömjénfelhőkéhez hasonlatos; áttetsző, azúros, éteri szellemét, amely a földet és a mindenséget mintegy a Harmónia átlátszó, kifejezhetetlen és titokzatos palástjával vonja be.”

Liszt Ferenc: Prométheusz Az 1850-es weimari Herder-ünnepségekhez kapcsolódott Liszt, amikor a költő egyik drámájához, A láncaitól megszabadított Prométheuszhoz komponált több kórustételt és egy nyitányt. Ez utóbbit később szimfonikus költeményeinek sorába illesztette. Műve előszavában Liszt a görög mitológia lázadó titánját „a bátorság, szenvedés, kitartás és megváltás, az ember számára megközelíthető legmagasabb hivatás elérésére való merész törekvés” szimbólumaként jellemezte. Mint a szimfonikus költemények legtöbbjének, a Prométheusz dramaturgiájának is alapvonulata a szenvedés és a megdicsőülés – Malheur et Gloire! –, amire maga Liszt hívja fel a figyelmet. A darab programja „villámló kifejezést” igényel, s „zenei karaktere a kétségbeesés hangja, mely végül, a büszke, dacos kitartás eredményeként, győzelemmé válik”.

Liszt Ferenc: Mazeppa A szimfonikus költemény zenei anyaga már Liszt egyik korai etűdjében megjelent, de a Mazeppa cím csak az 1851-ben véglegesített Transzcendens etűdökben került a negyedik darab elé. A szimfonikus költemény is ebben az évben készült, programjának irodalmi forrása Victor Hugo verse.

Liszt zenéje a lóhoz kötözött kozák vezér, Mazeppa tehetetlen vergődését, a megvadult ló féktelen száguldását, majd a hős csodával határos megszabadulását jeleníti meg. Hugo, Byronhoz hasonlóan, úgy gondolta, hogy Mazeppa a zseniális művészt jelképezi. A zseni éppúgy hozzá van kötözve géniuszához, mint Mazeppa a lovához, az vágtat vele hegyen-völgyön, árkon-bokron át, akarata ellenére, összerogyásig: meghurcolja, de egyszersmind az egekbe repíti. Mert a meghurcolt zseniális művész a porból királyként emelkedik fel.

4.3 Liszt: Ünnepi hangok (Festklänge) Liszt: Hősi sirató (Héroïde funèbre) Liszt: Hungaria Liszt Ferenc: Ünnepi hangok (Festklänge) Az Ünnepi hangok különlegesnek számít Liszt szimfonikus költeményei sorában: könnyed hangulatú, derűs, mi több, játékos; nyoma sincs benne a drámai hangvételnek, a küzdelem ábrázolásának. Mindez nem meglepő, hiszen Liszt saját esküvői zenéjének szánta: az 1850-es évek elején még úgy tűnt, hogy Liszt és Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein tervezett házasságát sem jogi, sem vallási aggályok nem akadályozhatják meg. Ebben végül keserűen csalódniuk kellett.

Liszt Ferenc: Hősi sirató (Héroïde funèbre) „A Héroïde funèbre 1830-ban »Forradalmi« szimfóniaként kezdte pályafutását – ez lett volna Liszt válasza az abban az évben lezajlott júliusi forradalom politikai megmozdulásaira. Az ifjúkori darabból azonban a jelek szerint mindössze néhány elszórt vázlat, valamint az első tétel anyaga maradt fenn. Az 1848–49-es európai felkelések közvetlen hatására Liszt Weimarban visszatért ezekhez a részletes vázlatokhoz, és hozzáfogott átdolgozásukhoz. Húsz évvel idősebb volt ekkor – és jóval bölcsebb. E mesteri darab előszavában egyértelműen leszögezi: nem az volt a szándéka, hogy konkrét hősöknek vagy konkrét forradalmaknak állítson emléket, hanem sokkal inkább az, hogy általában a hősök és forradalmak zenei emlékművét alkossa meg az emberi öldöklés egész történetén keresztül. A háború »gyászlobogója ott leng minden idő és hely fölött«, írja, majd így fejezi be: »Ezekben az egymást követő háborúkban és mészárlásokban, eme gyászos játékokban, bármi legyen is az egymás ellen büszkén és merészen felröppenő zászlók színe, mindkét oldalon hősi vérben és kifogyhatatlan könnyáradatban áznak azok. A Művészet feladata, hogy átszellemítő fátylát a bátrak sírjára vesse, hogy arany dicsfényével övezze a holtakat és haldoklókat úgy, hogy az élők megirigyeljék.«” (Alan Walker) Liszt Ferenc: Hungaria Mint nem egy szimfonikus költeménynek, a Hungaria című darabnak is egy zongorakompozíció az előzménye. Liszt 1840-ben Heroisher Marsch im ungarischen Styl (Hősi induló magyaros stílusban) címmel írt egy művet, mely köszönet és válasz volt Vörösmarty Mihály ódájára (Liszt Ferenchez).

Az első zenekari partitúravázlatok 1848-ban készültek el, a teljes kompo-

zíció 1854-re. Két évvel később a Hungaria Liszt Ferenc vezényletével a pesti Nemzeti Színházban csendült fel első ízben. A Hölgyfutár című lap lelkesen számolt be az eseményről: „A mai akadémia nem Liszt, az ünnepelt zongorakirály hangversenye volt, hanem Liszté, a lángeszű zeneköltőé. Fogadtatása – midőn a karnagyi polcon megjelent – igen zajos volt, mely symphoniája után valódi lelkesedéssé emelkedett. Harsogó, hosszas taps, éljenek, virágkoszorúk, üdvözlő versek köszöntötték a nagy zenészt.

Az akadémiát Hungaria című symphoniája rekeszté be. Ez is egész új modorú zeneteremtmény. Benne nagy szépségek vannak, melyeknek nem csak teremtése, de kivitele is nagy erőt igényel. A magyaros elemek azonban leplezetten tűnnek föl benne. A színházban annyi ember volt, amennyi beférhetett. A közönség hosszas taps között búcsúzott el a nagy zenésztől, ki 1842-ben zongorázási rendkívüli tehetségét, s most zeneköltői lángeszét véste honfitársai emlékébe.”

4.4 Liszt: Hamlet Liszt: Hunok csatája (Hunnenschlacht) Liszt: Az ideálok (Die Ideale) Liszt: A bölcsőtől a sírig (Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe) 1. A bölcső 2. Küzdelem a létért 3. A sír: a túlvilági élet bölcsője Liszt Ferenc: Hamlet Az 1858-ban befejezett, de csak 1876-ban bemutatott Hamlet Liszt kevéssé ismert darabjai közé tartozik, miközben egyik legmélyebb, legizgalmasabb kompozíciója. A művet övező korabeli értetlenséget jelképezi, hogy még a Liszt iránt feltétel nélküli bizalmat mutató Hans von Bülow is előadhatatlannak minősítette. Liszt úgy tervezte, hogy a szimfonikus költemény a Shakespeare-dráma nyitányaként szólalhatna meg. Nagy hatással volt rá az az 1856-os weimari előadás, melyben egy jeles lengyel színész, Bogumil Dawison alakította a címszerepet. Dawison játéka azért fogta meg, mert romantikus volt, Hamlet tehetséges, akaraterős és határozott személyiség volt, Ophelia pedig – Liszt értelmezésében – azért háborodik meg, mert végső soron méltatlan Hamlethez. Rokonságot látott közte és Brabanti Elza, Wagner Lohengrinjének hősnője között. A kompozíció zenéje finom, szemlélődő. Nincsenek benne harsány effektusok, annál több kamarazeneszerű részlet. A befejezés sem a „szokásos” apoteózis hangján szól, inkább csendes, filozofikus és magába forduló.

Liszt Ferenc: Hunok csatája (Hunnenschlacht) A Hunok csatája 1857-ben keletkezett, közvetlen ihletője Wilhelm von Kaulbach festménye, melynek reprodukcióját Liszt élettársa, Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein ajándékozta a zeneszerzőnek. A történelmi témájú kép a 451-ben lezajlott, Róma és a hunok serege közötti ütközetet a metafora szintjére emelve ábrázolja. Lisztet megragadta a kép, amelyben a mélyen vallásos komponista a pogányság és a kereszténység küzdelmét látta. A szimfonikus költeményt a weimari udvari színházban mutatta be 1857 legvégén. A partitúra 1861-ben jelent meg nyomtatásban. Mint a legtöbb szimfonikus költemény, a Hunok csatája is kevés témából építkezik, két-két téma jelképezi a hunok és a keresztények oldalát. A hun sereg zenei karakterében magyaros színezetre is felfigyelhetünk. A keresztény téma egy gregorián dallamra épül, amelyet Liszt az 1853-ban megjelent, Enchiridion chorale című gyűjteményből vett. Egy levelében így írt erről: „Az anyag zenei kívánalmai tették szükségessé, hogy a kereszténység napvilágát jelképező katolikus korális, a Crux fidelis viszonylag nagyobb szerepet kapjon, és ezzel sikerüljön pregnánsan ábrázolnom a kereszt győzelmével való befejezést.”

Liszt Ferenc: Az ideálok (Die Ideale) „Életünk legfőbb értelme, hogy ragaszkodjunk ideálunkhoz, és szüntelenül munkálkodjunk megvalósításán.” Ezzel a gondolattal egészítette ki Liszt Ferenc Az ideálok című, Schiller költeményét követő szimfonikus művének programját. A darab – mely a művészi pálya hullámvölgyeiről és hullámhegyeiről, a becsvágyról, a kudarcról, a szüntelen küzdelemről és az elmagányosodás fenyegető árnyairól szól – e kiegészítés nélkül talán túlságosan is pesszimista hangvételű lenne, így azonban olyan univerzális érvényű maximával zárul, melyre általános, művészi hitvallásként tekinthetünk.

Liszt Ferenc: A bölcsőtől a sírig (Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe) Az élete delén alkotó Liszt Ferenc – különösen a weimari időszakban írt 12 szimfonikus költeményben – hősök küzdelmét és megdicsőülését ragadta meg zenei eszközökkel. Bő két évtizeddel később, 1881-ben, utolsó szimfonikus költeményében a küzdelem pusztán intermezzo az élet két nagy eseménye között. Liszt, túl a küzdelmeken, rezignáltan tekint az emberi lét végére, a túlvilágot látja maga előtt teljes megnyugvással. A darabot Zichy Mihály hasonló című grafikája inspirálta.

Klukon Edit, Ránki Dezső Egy néhány évvel korábbi „előhang” után 1985-ben kezdtünk együtt koncertezni, már első alkalommal is Liszt-művet, a Mazeppa négykezes változatát játszottuk Lukin László tanár úr felkérésére. Az azóta eltelt 35 évben félezerszer léptünk fel közösen, a rengeteg itthoni koncert mellett Európa legtöbb országában, Amerikában és Japánban. Eleinte csak négykezeseztünk, később a kétzongorás, sőt a legutóbbi években Fülöp fiunkkal a háromzongorás formáció is rendszeressé vált. Inkább időrendi, mint fontossági sorrendben említve a következő szerzők zenéjében merítkeztünk meg: Bach összes versenyműve egynél több zongorára, Mozart négykezes művei és többzongorás versenyművei, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms és Grieg zongoraduói, Debussy, Ravel és Satie csodálatos négykezes és kétzongorás darabjai, Bartók kétzongorás művei, Messiaen: Visions de l’Amen szintén két zongorára.

Liszt zenéje és személyisége mindig közel állt a szívünkhöz, művei majd’ négy évtizedes közös zenélésünk egyik alappillérét alkotják. A Via Crucis – melyet főművei közé sorolunk – négykezes változatát 1986-ban, a Faust-szimfónia korábbi, a legutóbbi időkig csak kéziratban létező, nagyszerű kétzongorás átdolgozását 1990-ben mi mutattuk be. Beethoven 9. szimfóniájának nagy műgonddal készített kétzongorás átiratát is rendszeresen játszottuk. Kezdettől fogva műsoron tartunk néhányat szimfonikus költeményeiből négykezes változatban, de mostanában jutottunk arra az elhatározásra, hogy megtanuljuk az összeset. Liszt a zenekari változatok komponálásával egy időben mindig készített kétzongorás kivonatot, évekkel, sok esetben 15-20 évvel később azonban négykezes formába is öntötte őket rengeteg változtatással, így igazi, csodálatos zongoraművek születtek. Hatalmas, örömteli és felemelő feladat ezeket a nagyközönség által jórészt ismeretlen változatokat eljátszani, hiszen tudomásunk szerint e négykezes átdolgozásokból a teljes sorozat Budapesten még soha nem hangzott el. 4.1 Liszt: What One Hears on the Mountain (Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne) Liszt: Tasso, Lament and Triumph (Tasso, Lamento e trionfo) Ferenc Liszt: What One Hears on the Mountain (Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne) What One Hears on the Mountain, or the Mountain Symphony for short, is a symphonic poem that is based on Victor Hugo’s poem of the same title. It is a characteristic and beautiful manifestation of pantheism, which became popular again in the age of Romanticism. The poem recognizes nature as a symbol of eternal life, and Liszt’s work is about the duality and conflict of nature and human life. It barely needs to be emphasized how topical this piece is 150 years on. Liszt started composing it in 1848, and premiered it at the court of the Grand Duke of Weimar in February 1850. “Why did the Lord marry forever the song of nature with the painful cries of mankind?

Liszt intensifies the poet’s final question to make it a universal problem; in the vast modulatory parts that constitute the backbone of this work he interprets humanity’s pain as a tragic search for God, and descends to the deepest instinct of Hugo’s idea when he shows, with the opening and closing of his piece, that the poet seeks refuge from the human din in the restorative power and calm of nature,” wrote Antal Molnár.

Ferenc Liszt: Tasso, Lament and Triumph (Tasso, Lamento e trionfo) The composition is (also) related to the 100th anniversary of Goethe’s birth.

Weimar commemorated the poet, who played an important part in the history of the city, with a large-scale ceremony, and the theatre whose director Liszt was staged his drama on Tasso, the Italian poet whose life was full of vicissitudes. Liszt composed an overture for this production in 1849, and then released a revised version as a symphonic poem. The message of the piece has less to do with Goethe’s play than with Byron’s poem, The Lament of Tasso, the bitter monologue of an artist oppressed by a despot. The music is rooted in an 1840 memory from Venice, where Liszt heard gondoliers sing passages from Tasso’s chef d’oeuvre, Jerusalem Delivered. He noted down the melody, and a decade later it became the seed of the overture’s music.

“Tasso loved and suffered in Ferrara, was avenged in Rome, and lives to this day in the popular songs of Venice,” Liszt said. Besides being the programme of the symphonic poem, Tasso (1854), the idea is also expressive of the hope that Liszt the composer entertained throughout his life. “Although Byron gave us the groans of Tasso in his prison,” wrote Liszt in the preface to the score that was published in 1856, “he did not join to the recollection

of the keen sorrows so nobly and eloquently expressed in his ‘Lamentation’ the thought of the triumph that awaited, by an act of tardy yet striking justice... We have wished to indicate this contrast even in the title of the work, and we have endeavoured to succeed in formulating this grand antithesis of genius.”

4.2 Liszt: Les Préludes Liszt: Orpheus Liszt: Prometheus Liszt: Mazeppa Ferenc Liszt: Les Préludes Les Préludes is one of Liszt’s most frequently performed symphonic poems.

Its genesis began in 1844. The title, which may at first sound strange, was inspired by the Nouvelles méditations poétiques of Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869). Liszt described the programme of the piece thus: “What else is our life but a series of preludes to that unknown Hymn, the first and solemn note of which is intoned by Death? – Love is the glowing dawn of all existence; but what is the fate where the first delights of happiness are not interrupted by some storm, the mortal blast of which dissipates its fine illusions, the fatal lightning of which consumes its altar; and where is the cruelly wounded soul which, on issuing from one of these tempests, does not endeavour to rest his recollection in the calm serenity of life in the fields?

Nevertheless man hardly gives himself up for long to the enjoyment of the beneficent stillness which at first he has shared in Nature’s bosom, and when ‘the trumpet sounds the alarm,’ he hastens, to the dangerous post, whatever the war may be, which calls him to its ranks, in order at last to recover in the combat full consciousness of himself and entire possession of his energy.”

It is now evident that Liszt added this programme at the last minute, after completing the orchestral piece, in an attempt to make the impression that it was inspired by Lamartine’s poem – and setting the direction for interpretation for a long time.

The musical material of what we have come to know as Les Préludes was originally inspired by the poems of Joseph Autran (1813–1877). Liszt set four poems to music (Les Aquilons – The North Winds; Les Flots – The Floods; Les Astres – The Stars; La Terre – The Earth), which were to form a cycle of choral works under the title of Les Quatre Éléments (The Four Elements).

The choruses are introduced by an orchestral Overture, which was first orchestrated by August Conradi. His work was revised by Joachim Raff around

1850, and then Liszt changed the complete orchestration (1852–1854).

It was during this creative phase that the final title and the reference to Lamartine were added.

Ferenc Liszt: Orpheus Liszt composed the piece for the theatre of the Weimar court, and it was first performed as an introduction to Gluck’s opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, in February 1854. Liszt’s composition is not related to Gluck’s opera, nor does it seek to tell the mythical story. He needs the figure of Orpheus so as to formulate his own artistic credo. Liszt writes in his preface to the score of the symphonic poem: “Had it been given me completely to formulate my thought, I could have wished to render the serenely civilizing character of the songs that radiates from every work of art; their gentle energy, their august empery, their sonority that fills the soul with noble ecstasy, their undulation, soft as breezes from Elysium, their gradual uprising like clouds of incense, their diaphanous and azure ether enveloping the world and the whole universe as with an atmosphere, as with a transparent garment of ineffable and mysterious Harmony.”

Ferenc Liszt: Prometheus Liszt’s contribution to the 1850 Weimar celebrations of Herder was a group of choruses and an overture for Prometheus Unbound, the poet’s drama.

He later added the latter to his symphonic poems as Prometheus. In the preface, he described the rebellious titan of Greek mythology as a symbol of “courage, suffering, fortitude and redemption, the bold striving to achieve the loftiest mission accessible to man.” As in most of the symphonic poems, the dramaturgy of Prometheus is based on suffering and glory – Malheur et Gloire! – as Liszt himself was quick to point out. The programme of the piece requires a “flashing expression,” whose “musical character is the sound of despair which turns, through bold and defiant persistence, into triumph.”

Ferenc Liszt: Mazeppa The musical material of this symphonic poem already appeared in one of Liszt’s early études, but it was not until 1851, in the finalized Transcendental Études, where it became the fourth piece, that it was entitled Mazeppa.

The symphonic poem was written the same year, on a poem by Victor Hugo as the literary source for its programme. Liszt’s music evokes the helpless struggle of the Cossack commander tied to a horse, its wild, reckless gallop, and the miraculous escape of the hero. Like Byron, Hugo considered Mazeppa a symbol of the brilliant artist. Just as the Cossack is tied to his horse, the genius is inseparable from his talent, which drags him along despite his will, up hill and down dale, until it collapses: it torments him but it also raises him to high heavens. The disgraced artist of genius rises from the dust as a king.

4.3 Liszt: Festive Sounds (Festklänge) Liszt: At a Hero’s Funeral (Héroïde funèbre) Liszt: Hungaria Ferenc Liszt: Festive Sounds (Festklänge) The Festklänge is special among Liszt’s symphonic poems in that its atmosphere is airy, serene, even playful; there is no sign of a dramatic tone, or the representation of struggle. This is barely surprising, because Liszt composed it for his own wedding: in the early 1850s there seemed to be no legal or religious barriers to the marriage of Liszt and Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.

They were eventually frustrated in their hope.

Ferenc Liszt: At a Hero’s Funeral (Héroïde funèbre) “Héroïde funèbre started life in 1830 as a ‘Revolutionary’ Symphony, which was intended to be Liszt’s response to the political upheavals of the ‘July Revolution’ of that year. Apart from some scattered sketches, however, nothing appears to have survived of this youthful work except the material from the first movement. Liszt now returned to the detailed sketches of this youthful work and proceeded to revise them as a direct result of the European uprisings of 1848–49. He was now twenty years older and a good deal wiser. In his preface to this magisterial work he makes it clear that it was not his intention to memorialize particular heroes or particular revolutions but rather to erect a musical monument for heroes and revolutions in general, throughout the whole spectrum of human carnage. He regarded war as a ‘funeral banner [that] floats above all times and places,’ and he concluded:

‘In these successive wars and massacres – sinister sports – whatever may be the colour of the flags which rise proudly and boldly one against the other, on both sides they float steeped in heroic blood and inexhaustible tears. It is for Art to throw its transfiguring veil on the tomb of the brave, to encircle the dead and dying with its golden halo, so that they may be the envy of the living.’” (Alan Walker) Ferenc Liszt: Hungaria As was the case with many of the symphonic poems, the precedent to Hungaria was a piano piece. In 1840 Liszt wrote a composition he entitled Heroisher Marsch im ungarischen Styl (Heroic March in the Hungarian Style), as a token of gratitude and response to Mihály Vörösmarty’s ode, “To Franz Liszt.” The first orchestral score sketches were made in 1848, and the composition was completed in 1854. It was premiered at the Pest National Theatre two years later, with Liszt on the rostrum. “Today’s academy,” read the enthusiastic review of Hölgyfutár, “was not a concert of Liszt, the celebrated king of the piano, but of Liszt, the brilliant poet of music. His reception, when he appeared on the conductor’s podium, was very noisy, which, after his symphony, rose to real enthusiasm. A roaring, lengthy applause, cheers, wreaths of flowers and poems were offered to greet the great musician. The academy came to an end with his symphony, Hungaria. It is a musical creation in a completely new vein. It is replete with great beauties which it takes great strength both to create and perform. The Hungarian elements, however, are well hidden. The theatre was filled to capacity. With long applause, the audience bade farewell to a great musician who in 1842 etched his extraordinary piano playing talent in his compatriots’ memory, and now his composing genius.”

4.4 Liszt: Hamlet Liszt: The Battle of the Huns (Hunnenschlacht) Liszt: The Ideals (Die Ideale) Liszt: From the Cradle to the Grave (Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe) 1. The Cradle 2. To the Grave, the Cradle of the Future Ferenc Liszt: Hamlet Completed in 1858 but premiered only in 1876, Hamlet is among Liszt’s lesserknown compositions, although it is one of the most profound, most compelling pieces he wrote. It baffled everyone at the time: characteristically, even Hans von Bülow, whose trust in Liszt was always unconditional, found it impossible to perform. Liszt intended the symphonic poem as an overture to Shakespeare’s drama. He was greatly impressed by an 1856 performance in Weimar, in which Hamlet was played by the great Polish actor, Bogumil Dawison. Liszt was taken by his Romantic prince, who was talented, strongwilled and purposeful. Liszt thought Ophelia went mad because ultimately she was unworthy of Hamlet. In his mind she was not unlike Elsa of Brabant in Wagner’s Lohengrin. It is a subtle, contemplative composition: there are no loud effects, while chamber music-like details abound. Nor does the conclusion sound the “usual” tone of apotheosis; it is quiet instead, philosophical, introverted.

Ferenc Liszt: The Battle of the Huns (Hunnenschlacht) Written in 1857, The Battle of the Huns was inspired by Wilhelm von Kaulbach’s painting, a reproduction of which was given to Liszt by his partner, Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. The painting represents the 451 battle between the Romans and the Huns in a metaphorical manner. The deeply religious Liszt was taken by what he saw as the struggle between paganism and Christianity. The symphonic poem had its premiere at the end of 1857, in the Weimar court theatre. The score appeared in print in 1861. Like most symphonic poems, The Battle of the Huns relies on a handful of themes. The Huns and the Christians are each symbolized by two themes. There is also a modicum of Hungarian taste in the musical character of the Hun army.

The Christian theme is based on a Gregorian melody, which Liszt took from an 1853 collection, Enchiridion chorale. “I was led by the musical demands of the material,” wrote Liszt in a letter, “to give proportionately more place

to the solar light of Christianity, personified in the Catholic chorale ‘Crux fidelis,’ than appears to be the case in the glorious painting, in order thereby to win and pregnantly represent the conclusion of the Victory of the Cross.”

Ferenc Liszt: The Ideals (Die Ideale) “The chief meaning of one’s life is to insist on one’s ideal and work incessantly to realize it.” Liszt added this idea to the programme of the symphonic work that is based on Schiller’s poem, Die Ideale. The comment tempers the pessimism of the piece, which is about the ups and downs of artistic careers, ambition, failure, the ceaseless struggle, and the threatening shadows of loneliness; it adds a maxim of universal validity that can be considered a general artistic creed.

Ferenc Liszt: From the Cradle to the Grave (Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe) In the works he wrote during the prime of his life – especially in the twelve symphonic poems of the Weimar period –, Liszt captured with his music the struggle and glorification of heroes. In his last symphonic poem, written over two decades later, in 1881, struggle is but an interlude between the two great events of life. With all his fights behind him, Liszt considers the end of human life with resignation, contemplating afterlife with complete calm.

The piece was inspired by Mihály Zichy’s similarly titled drawing.

Edit Klukon, Dezső Ránki With a “prologue” preceding it by a few years, we started to give concerts together in 1985, and began with a piece by Liszt. On the invitation of László Lukin, the educator, we performed a four-handed version of Mazeppa.

Over the 35 years since then, we have performed 500 times together, in Hungary, most European countries, America and Japan. Initially we played four-handed pieces, then included works for two pianos, and in recent years we enrolled our son, Fülöp, for three-piano formations. We have immersed ourselves in the music of the following composers, in order of chronology, rather than importance: Mozart’s four-handed works and concertos for multiple pianos, the piano duets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Grieg; the wonderful four-handed and two-piano pieces of Debussy, Ravel and Satie, Bartók’s works for two pianos, and Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen, also for two pianos.

We always felt close to Liszt’s music and personality, his works have been one of the cornerstones of our joint music-making, which we began almost four decades ago. We came to premiere the four-handed version of Via Crucis – which we think is a major piece – in 1986, and a splendid, earlier

two-piano version of the Faust Symphony, which remained in manuscript until recently, in 1990. We regularly played the two-piano arrangement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, which he prepared with great care. We kept four-handed arrangements of some of the symphonic poems on our repertoire from the start, but it was only recently that we decided to learn all of them. When composing the orchestral versions, Liszt always created extracts for two pianos. The four-handed versions, however, were made years later, often 15 to 20 years later, with lots of changes, and they’re wonderful piano pieces. It is very uplifting and gratifying to play these versions, which the public are mostly unfamiliar with, as to the best of our knowledge, the complete series of the four-handed versions has never been performed in Budapest before.
