Liszt Ferenc: B-A-C-H prelúdium és fúga (1855-ös változat) A saját nevéből képezett motívum már Bach számára is feldolgozásra érdemes zenei ötletnek bizonyult, és a következő évszázadokban is több zeneszerző építette be egy-egy kompozíciójába. Liszt egyik legismertebb orgonaműve a merseburgi dóm orgonájának avatására készült. Az első változat 1855-ben keletkezett, a koncertgyakorlatban azonban egy 1870-ben letisztázott változat vált uralkodóvá.

Liszt Ferenc: Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (Alexander Winterberger átirata) Liszt legidősebb lánya, Blandine halálakor fordult vigaszért, megnyugvásért Bach zenéjéhez. Az azonos című Bach-kantáta egyik részletének basszusmenetére komponált variációsorozatát 1862-ben zongorára, majd egy évvel később orgonára is kidolgozta. A Bach-kantáta nyomán írt darab prelúdiuma már korábban elkészült, ezt ültette át Alexander Winterberger, Liszt orgonaműveinek egyik legjelentősebb korabeli előadója orgonára (1859).

Liszt Ferenc: Ave Maria d’Arcadelt Liszt ebben az orgonaművében a Jacob Arcadelt (1505 k. – 1567 k.) flamand zeneszerzőnek tulajdonított vegyeskari Ave Maria témáját dolgozta fel.

(A kórustétel valójában egy 19. századi kompozíció, mely Arcadelt 1554-ben publikált chansonját használta fel.) Liszt feldolgozásában különösen jellegzetes a nyitószakasz harangozást idéző, atmoszférikus zenéje: „wie fernes Glockengeläute” (mintha távoli harangszó volna) – írta Liszt a kottasorok fölé.

Liszt Ferenc: A Villa d’Este szökőkútjai (Szabó Balázs átirata) Az Années de pèlerinage (Zarándokévek) III. kötetének mesterműve 1877 búskomor nyarán keletkezett. Liszt órákig képes volt egy ültő helyében a szökőkutakat bámulni, elvarázsolta az alázúduló víz. Az eredmény pedig a zenei impresszionizmus olyan előremutató darabja lett, amelynek még harminc esztendeig nem akadt párja. Liszt azonban nem elégedett meg a csobogás-csörgedezés puszta érzéki megjelenítésével, a kutakból feltörő víz nála misztikus szimbólummá válik. A mű kottáján olvasható, János evangéliumából (4:14) kölcsönzött mottó így szól: „Aki abból a vízből iszik, amelyet én adok neki, örök életre szökellő vízforrás lesz benne.” Állítólag amikor Debussy megismerte a darabot, megdöbbenve mondta: „Hja, ez az öreg Liszt – próféta volt.” A zongora lehetőségeit maximálisan kiaknázó kompozíció orgonára való átültetése nagy kihívás mind az átirat készítőjének, mind előadójának.

Liszt Ferenc: Excelsior!

Liszt Die Glocke des Strassburger Münsters (Strasbourgi harangok) címen írt darabot bariton szólistára, kórusra és zenekarra 1874-ben, a szöveg H. W. Longfellow verse volt. A kéttételes mű első részét írta át később orgonaszólóra ad libitum kórussal. A himnikus hangulatú, diadalmas lendületű kompozíció témájának érdekessége, hogy Wagner – jóval később – felhasználta a Parsifalban, erre 1882-ben Bayreuthban, a Parsifal próbáin maga Wagner hívta fel Liszt figyelmét.

Liszt Ferenc: Orfeusz – szimfonikus költemény (August Wilhelm Gottschalg átirata) A kompozíció az 1854-ben bemutatott hasonló című, nagyzenekarra írt szimfonikus költemény orgonaátirata. Az átdolgozást Wilhelm Gottschalg készítette 1860-ban, de a kézirat tanúsága szerint Liszt „rendkívül mélyreható javításokat eszközölt, így joggal sorolhatjuk saját munkái közé” – írta Margittay Sándor. A kompozíció zenéje nem a mitológiai hős történetére, sokkal inkább az elképzelt személyre koncentrál. A szimfonikus költemény partitúrájának előszavában Liszt így fogalmaz: „Szerettük volna itt megvalósítani a minden műalkotásból kiáradó, derűsen embernemesítő dallamot, ennek édes energiáját, fenséges hangzását; hullámzását, amely lágy, mint az elíziumi mezők fuvallata; fokozatos felemelkedését, amely a tömjénfelhőkéhez hasonlatos; áttetsző, azúros, éteri szellemét, amely a földet és a mindenséget mintegy a Harmónia átlátszó, kifejezhetetlen és titokzatos palástjával vonja be.”

Liszt Ferenc: Ave maris stella Első megfogalmazásában a kompozíció egy orgonakíséretes kórusmű volt; néhány évvel később, 1868-ban Liszt teljesen szabad feldolgozásban írta át orgonára. 1880-ban, egy hasonló szellemben kidolgozott Salve Reginával együtt jelent meg Két egyházi himnusz (Zwei Kirchenhymnen) cím alatt.

Liszt Ferenc: Fantázia és fúga az „Ad nos ad salutarem undam” kezdetű korál dallamára Liszt első és egyben legmonumentálisabb orgonaművének témája Meyerbeer A próféta című operájából származik. Formai építkezésében az 1850ben komponált mű a h-moll zongoraszonáta közvetlen előzménye. Margittay Sándor így fogalmazott: „A téma változatos zenei feldolgozása a szerző variálókedvének egyik legragyogóbb megnyilvánulása. Három nagyobb részre tagolódik: az első mozgalmasabb változatok sorozata, a középső elmélkedő hangulatú, bensőséges zene, a harmadik rész a téma fúgaformában való sodró erejű feldolgozása.”

Szabó Balázs Orgonaművész, Miskolcon született. 2008-ban végzett a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetemen, majd Würzburgban, Trossingenben és Rómában tanult tovább. Christoph Bossert irányításával 2010-ben szerezte meg a „Meister der Orgel” címet. Mestertanulmányai mellett a Vatikán védnöksége alatt álló Organ Expert nemzetközi orgonaszakértői képzést is kiváló minősítéssel végezte el. 2015-ben zenetudományi PhD-fokozatot szerzett az utrechti egyetemen, Hollandiában. 2011 óta a Zeneakadémia tanára, 2013 óta pedig a budapesti Bartók Béla Konzervatóriumban is tanít. Történelmi orgonák szakértője, orgonaművészként Európa-szerte hangversenyezik, és virtuóz játékosa egy manapság ritka billentyűs hangszernek, a Mustel-féle mesterharmóniumnak is. Több versenyen ért el előkelő helyezést, és olyan rangos nemzetközi versenyekről tért haza első díjjal, mint a St. Maurice-i (2007), a biarritzi (2009) és a nürnbergi (2011). Orgonaszakértői tevékenységének kiemelkedő állomása volt a freiburgi dóm fecskefészek-orgonájának állapotfelmérése és restaurálási munkálatainak dokumentációja, illetve a budapesti Zeneakadémia Nagytermébe 1907-ben épített Voit & Söhne hangversenyorgona rekonstrukciója.

Ferenc Liszt: B-A-C-H Prelude and Fugue (1855 version) The motif formed from Bach’s name proved to be a musical idea Bach himself considered worth exploring, and in the centuries that followed, several composers incorporated it in one work or another. Liszt wrote what became one of his best-known works for the inauguration of the organ of Merseburg Cathedral. The first version is from 1855, whereas the one usually performed is a revised variety from 1870.

Ferenc Liszt: Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (arranged by Alexander Winterberger) Liszt turned to Bach’s music for solace after the death of his oldest daughter, Blandine. Liszt first created a piano piece from the series of variations he based on the bass line of Bach’s cantata of the same title (1862), before transcribing it for the organ a year later. The prelude was written some time before the rest of the piece, and it was this that Alexander Winterberger, one of the most important performers of Liszt’s organ works at the time, transcribed for the instrument (1859).

Ferenc Liszt: Ave Maria d’Arcadelt This is Liszt’s arrangement of the Ave Maria theme of a work for mixed choir, which was attributed to Flemish composer Jacob Arcadelt (ca. 1505 – ca.

1567). (The choral movement in fact originated in the 19th century, and made use of Arcadelt’s chanson, which was published in 1554.) Particularly distinctive in Liszt’s arrangement is the atmospheric music of the opening section, which is reminiscent of tolling bells: “wie fernes Glockengeläute” (like distant bells ringing), he wrote over the staves.

Ferenc Liszt: Fountains of Villa d’Este (arranged by Balázs Szabó) This masterpiece from the third volume of Années de pèlerinage was written in the melancholy summer of 1877. Liszt could sit hours on end watching the fountains, enchanted by the falling water. The sight gave rise to such a progressive piece of musical impressionism that would not have its match for thirty years. Liszt was not content with the mere sensual suggestion of water babbling and gurgling: the water erupting from the fountains becomes a mystical symbol. The score bears this motto from John’s gospel (4:14): “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” When Debussy came to know the composition, he is said to have said, in shock: “Ah, that old Liszt – he was a prophet.” The organ version of this piece, which makes complete use of the potentials of the piano, is a great challenge for both the transcriber and the performer.

Ferenc Liszt: Excelsior!

Die Glocke des Strassburger Münsters (The Bell of Strasbourg Cathedral) was a piece for baritone, choir and orchestra that Liszt wrote in 1874, based on the poem of H. W. Longfellow. It was the first part of the two-movement work he later transcribed for the organ, with an ad libitum chorus. It is a point of interest that the composition, which has a hymnal mood and a triumphant momentum, was used by Wagner, much later, in Parsifal. This was pointed out to Liszt by Wagner himself, during the 1882 rehearsals of the opera in Bayreuth.

Ferenc Liszt: Orpheus – symphonic poem (arranged by August Wilhelm Gottschalg) This is the 1860 organ transcription of the symphonic poem of the same title, which was arranged for the symphony orchestra and was premiered in 1854. The transcription was the work of Wilhelm Gottschalg, but on the evidence of the manuscript, suggests Sándor Margittay, Liszt made intensive revisions and it can be rightly considered one of his own works. The music of the composition concentrates on not so much the story of the mythological figure as his imagined character. Liszt writes in his preface to the score of the symphonic poem: “Had it been given me completely to formulate my thought, I could have wished to render the serenely civilizing character of the songs that radiates from every work of art; their gentle energy, their august empery, their sonority that fills the soul with noble ecstasy, their undulation, soft as breezes from Elysium, their gradual uprising like clouds of incense, their diaphanous and azure ether enveloping the world and the whole universe as with an atmosphere, as with a transparent garment of ineffable and mysterious Harmony.”

Ferenc Liszt: Ave maris stella In its first manifestation the piece was a choral composition with organ accompaniment, which in 1868 Liszt transcribed, in a completely liberal manner, for the organ. It was published in 1880, together with a Salve Regina written in a similar vein, as Zwei Kirchenhymnen (Two Church Hymns).

Ferenc Liszt: Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam” This fantasy and fugue was Liszt’s first work for the organ – as well as his most monumental. He took the theme from Meyerbeer’s opera, Le prophète.

In terms of formal development, this 1850 piece is the immediate precedent of the piano sonata in B minor. “The diverse treatment of the theme is one of the most brilliant examples of the composer’s innovativeness in varia-

tion,” wrote Sándor Margittay. “It has three major parts: the first is a series of animated variations, the second comprises meditative, intimate music, the third is a forceful treatment of the theme in a fugue form.”

Balázs Szabó The organist was born in Miskolc. He graduated from the Liszt Academy in 2008, and went on to study in Würzburg, Trossingen and Rome. Studying with Christoph Bossert, he was named “Meister der Orgel” in 2010. While studying for his master’s degree, he also completed the Vatican’s international “Organ Expert” training course with top marks. In 2015 he earned his PhD in musicology at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He has been teaching at the Liszt Academy since 2011, and at the Budapest Bartók Béla Conservatory since 2013. An expert of historical organs, he gives recitals across Europe, and is a virtuoso of a now rare instrument, the Mustel harmonium. He participated with distinction at several international competitions, and brought away the first prize from St. Maurice (2007), Biarritz (2009) and Nuremberg (2011). Remarkable chapters in his work as an organ expert include surveying and documenting the restoration of the swallow’s nest organ at Freiburg Cathedral, and reconstructing the Voit & Söhne concert organ built in 1907 in the Liszt Academy’s Grand Hall.
