(María Pagés) María Pagés a flamenco jellegzetes táncnyelvének alapkódjait használva, a tradíció folytonosságát hangsúlyozva alakította ki a maga koreográfusi világát, mely organikus kapcsolatban áll a modern kor problémáival és érzékeny kérdések megfogalmazására kínál lehetőséget. Meggyőződése, hogy az emlékezet természetének kutatása a művészi alkotás lényegéhez tartozik.

Számára a tánc folyamatos, kreatív önvizsgálat, az eljövendő fürkészése. Vallja, hogy önmagunkra csak a kritikán keresztül ismerhetünk rá, ugyanakkor nincs benne semmi önvád, önostorozás, higgadt és bátor módon néz szembe azzal, ami ő maga: tökéletlenségében is gyönyörű ember. A szépség és az érzelmek forrását keresi, ezt tekinti minden művészi tevékenység etikai minimumának. A matematikai rend iránti érzékenységétől hajtva koreográfiáit poétikusság és muzikalitás jellemzi, inspirációs forrásai tekintetében nincs benne semmi elfogultság, John Lennon éppúgy megszólítja, mint Giuseppe Verdi vagy Paco de Lucía. Kreatív energiáit olyan írók munkáiból meríti, mint a 17. századi mexikói apáca-költő, Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 19. századi brazil író és költő, Machado de Assis, a francia szimbolista költő, Charles Baudelaire, az uruguayi Mario Benedetti, a mexikói Octavio Paz vagy a spanyol Federico García Lorca. Számára a költészet „a meztelenségünkkel és természetünkkel való szembesülés, a keresés végtelen útja”.

Az Óda az időhöz a pillanatról, az állandóságról, az örökkévalóságról kíván szólni személyes, szubjektív élmények és szakmai tapasztalatok felhasználásával. Mit jelent a visszafordíthatatlanság, hogyan hat az idő a testre, a vágyakra, a művészetre és általában mindarra, amit életnek nevezünk? A sevillai táncos-koreográfus ezt a munkáját – mely összegzése mindannak, amit táncosként, alkotóként tapasztalt – nehezen fakuló emlékképekre építette, sok derűvel, őszintén, tabuk nélkül. A színpadon négy-négy női és férfi táncossal, hét élőben játszó zenésszel lép intenzív és bensőséges kapcsolatba.

Az előadás alapvető filozófiai kérdéseket vet fel. Az „idő” fogalma mindig is aggodalommal töltötte el az embert, egész életünket kitölti az idő nagy és csodálatos paradoxonjairól való gondolkodás.

Az „idő” mindenható, könyörtelenül irányítja az élet kibontakozását.

Mozgásformaként tiszta: egyszerre olyan, mint egy egyenes vonal, egy sokszög vagy egy kör – sokértelmű koreográfiai mozdulatsor.

Ugyanakkor semmi sem szubjektívebb, mint az idő, az érzelmek felgyorsíthatják vagy épp megbéníthatják. Uralkodik az egyén felett, miközben formálja, strukturálja a közösséget. Úgy tűnik, hogy egyszerre minden és semmi. Egy képzet, amit szüntelenül formával, értelemmel szeretnénk felruházni. Egyszerre híd és szakadék, feszültségforrás, mely alapvető hatást gyakorol létezésünkre, hiszen jelen és jövő, rend és szabadság konfliktusait rejti magában. De szabályozó erő is, a távlatos jövő és a kötelezettségeket ránk rovó múlt között teremt egyensúlyt, és ez az erő képes a pillanatba sűríteni a teljességet. A születés és a halál így nem feltétlenül jelent abszolút kezdetet és véget, az idő múlása paradox módon hozzásegíthet az örökkévalóság élményének átéléséhez. Természetesen az Óda az időhöz elsősorban flamenco-előadás, melyben a tánc és a zene – építve a nemes hagyományokra – az életörömről, az eufóriáról, a szerelemről, a vágyról, az érzékek és a test elragadtatásáról mesél. És persze az árnyékokról is, a melankóliáról, a magunkba való visszavonulásról, a félelemről, a háborúkról.

María Pagés A sevillai születésű María Pagés nem emlékszik, mikor kezdődött a flamenco iránti szenvedélye, hiszen már akkor is táncolás közben fotózták a felnőttek, amikorról még nem lehetnek saját emlékei.

Családjában nem voltak művészek, táncosok. Édesapja matematikatanár volt, és ha nem a tánc lett volna Pagés útja, maga is ezt a hivatást vagy valami ehhez hasonlót választ. Pályája indulásakor Antonio Gades társulatában dolgozott, itt fejlődött, itt vált professzionális táncossá. A mai napig ő a legnagyobb példaképe, a legtöbbet tőle tanulta. Gades a hatvanas években elmenekült Franco Spanyolországából, és évtizedeket töltött különféle európai országokban, ahol nemcsak népszerűsítette az otthonról hozott flamencohagyományokat, hanem az őt ért hatások által folyamatosan meg is újította, bővítette őket. Pagés ebben mindenképpen hasonlít egykori, 2004-ben elhunyt mesterére. Ő is elkötelezett védelmezője és ápolója a spanyol hagyományoknak, hangsúlyozva, hogy amúgy rengetegféle népzene és néptánc létezik az országban, amelyből csak egy – bár ma már kétségtelenül a legmagasabb szintű – a flamenco. Óriási kihívásnak tartja, hogy ezek az ősi kincsek fenn­ maradjanak, főleg egy olyan világban, amely szerinte aggasztó módon felgyorsult. Huszonnyolc évesen, 1990-ben alapította meg saját társulatát, amelyben többek között hét flamencozenésszel és tíz táncossal dolgozik együtt. Két-három évente készítenek új műsort, amelyek egy kicsit mindig tágítják a flamenco határait. Alkotott előadást szülővárosáról, Sevilláról, dolgozott az ír sztepptáncos Riverdance csoporttal vagy a marokkói származású Sidi Larbi Cherkaouival. Darabjaiban újra és újra visszatér az irodalomhoz, a költészethez. Így született meg saját Carmen-verziója, melyhez egyaránt merített inspirációt Mérimée szövegéből, Bizet operájából és Gades koreográfiájából – az eredmény pedig egy különleges, erősen feminista hangvételű, eredeti flamencoköltemény lett, amelyben ös�szefonódik szöveg, dal és mozgás. Ugyanígy irodalmi alapokra épül az Óda az időhöz című produkció is.

María Pagés: Una oda al tiempo (An Ode to Time) “Flamenco is born out of emotion, and the technique comes afterwards – unlike, for example, contemporary dance, where it is the other way around. There is a mix of many cultures in it. The origins are very old, even though it has only really emerged as a recognised art form in our lifetime. Its strength comes from it being a popular art. That is what gives it such a strong identity.” (María Pagés) Using the basic codes of flamenco’s distinctive dance language, and emphasising the continuity of tradition, María Pagés has created her own choreographic world, which is organically linked to the problems of the modern age and offers the means of formulating sensitive questions. She is convinced that exploring the nature of memory is part of the core of artistic creation.

For her, dance is ceaseless, creative introspection, a search for what is to come. She thinks we can only know ourselves through criticism, while she is without self-reproach or self-flagellation, facing what she is in a calm and courageous way: a human who is beautiful despite her imperfection. She seeks the source of beauty and emotions, a mission she considers the ethical minimum of all artistic activity. Driven by a sensitivity to mathematical order, her choreography is poetic and musical, and there is no bias in what she considers a source of inspiration, with John Lennon as likely to speak to her as Giuseppe Verdi or Paco de Lucía. She draws her creative energies from the works of such writers as the 17th century Mexican nun poet Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 19th century Brazilian writer and poet Machado de Assis, the French symbolist poet Charles Baudelaire, the Uruguayan Mario Benedetti, or Octavio Paz and Federico García Lorca. For her, poetry is “an endless journey of search, of confrontation with our nakedness and our nature.”

An Ode to Time seeks to talk about the moment, permanence, eternity, and does so, of course, by referencing personal, subjective experiences and professional expertise. What does irreversibility mean, how does time affect the body, one’s desires, art, and all that we tend to call life? The Sevillian dancer-choreographer has built this work – a kind of synthesis of everything she has experienced as a dancer and creator – on difficult memories, with a lot of humour, honesty and no taboos.

On stage, she connects, intensely and intimately, with four male and four female dancers, as well as seven live musicians.

The production poses fundamental philosophical questions. The concept of “Time” has always been a source of anxiety, and we never stop thinking about the great and wonderful paradoxes of time. “Time” is omnipotent, inexorably guiding the unfolding of life. As a form of movement, it is clear: it is like a straight line, a polygon or a circle – an ambiguous choreographic sequence of movements. At the same time, nothing is more subjective than Time, which emotions can speed up or paralyse.

It dominates the individual while shaping and structuring the community. It seems to be everything and nothing at the same time. It is a notion that we constantly want to give form and meaning to. It is both a bridge and a chasm, a source of tension that has a fundamental impact on our existence, as it contains conflicts between the present and the future, order and freedom. But it is also a regulating force, which balances the future, full of potential, and the past, which imposes obligations on us – and the same force can compress wholeness into the moment. Birth and death are thus not necessarily the absolute beginning and end; the passage of time can paradoxically bring you the experience of eternity.

Time is the greatest mystery and challenge of our existence.

An Ode to Time is, of course, first and foremost a flamenco performance in which the dance and music – relying on noble traditions – speak about the joy of life, euphoria, love, desire, the rapture of the senses and the body. As well as about the shadows, the melancholy, the retreat into ourselves, our fears and wars.

María Pagés Seville native María Pagés cannot remember when her passion for flamenco began, but she can already be seen dancing in photographs that were taken at a time she could not possibly recall. There were no artists or dancers in her family. Her father was a teacher of mathematics, and if dancing had not presented itself as a path for Pagés, she would have chosen his profession, or something similar. She started her career in Antonio Gades’ company, where she grew to be a professional dancer.

To this day, he is still her chief paragon, someone she has learned the most from. Gades fled Franco’s Spain in the 1960s and spent decades in various European countries, where he not only popularised the flamenco traditions he had brought from home, but also made use of the influences he was exposed to revitalize and expanded them. In this regard,

Pagés certainly resembles her former master, who died in 2004. She too is a staunch defender and guardian of Spanish traditions, pointing out that there are many different kinds of folk music and folk dance in the country, of which flamenco is only one – although now undoubtedly the most sophisticated. She sees it as a great challenge to preserve these ancient treasures, especially in a world that she says has become alarmingly fast-paced. She founded her own company in 1990, at the age of 28, and it now has seven flamenco musicians and ten dancers.

They make a new production every two or three years, every time pushing the boundaries of flamenco a little. She has dedicated a show to her hometown, Seville, has collaborated with the Irish tap dance group Riverdance, and with the Moroccan-born Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. In her productions she keeps returning to literature, to poetry. Her own version of Carmen, for instance, was equally inspired by Mérimée’s text, Bizet’s opera and Gades’ choreography, the end result being a unique, strongly feminist, original flamenco poem that interweaves text, song and movement. An Ode to Time is also based on literary sources.
