Foreword
With Q2 well underway, we’ve achieved some key milestones across our portfolio.
The completion of Argyle Street and One Nine Elms, despite significant constraints and challenges along the way, showcases the grit and expertise of the Multiplex team in bringing largescale developments to life for our clients. Congratulations to both project teams on crossing the finish line and thank you for your dedication and hard work.
Another notable achievement is the recent topping out of 76 Southbank. This project underscores our expertise in adaptive reuse, as Multiplex is managing the sensitive remodelling, refurbishment and extension of the building to transform it into a market leading sustainable office space, while retaining 80% of the existing structure.
We recently held our yearly Supply Chain Business Update. Over 250 subcontractors attended the event, which was held over two days, highlighting our approach to business and future plans. We are grateful for the valuable feedback and look forward to continued collaboration.
Multiplex was also proud to sponsor the 10th Annual New London Architecture (NLA) Tall Building Report, which reflects on a decade of high-rise buildings in London. The report presents challenges, opportunities, and best practices, and brings together industry experts and the public to share lessons learned and discuss one of the capital’s most debated topics. It’s positive to see many of our flagship tall towers featured throughout the publication, showcasing our ability to deliver complex developments on logistically constrained sites within the City of London.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the teams that completed the Three Peaks Challenge and those who participated in the annual Lighthouse Charity Walk. I was disappointed I had to pull out of the Three Peaks Challenge this year, but hope to take part in whatever the team plan for 2025. It’s rewarding to see our staff come together to raise funds and awareness for worthy causes, making a long-term, positive impact.

76 Southbank
Reimagining an Iconic Location for the Next Generation
76 Southbank is a prime example of repurposing existing buildings for modern use. With ambitious BREEAM and NABERS accreditation goals, we are focused on refurbishing and extending the existing building to deliver a highly efficient, flexible modern day commercial office space – and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far.
Being selected by Stanhope and Wolfe Commercial Properties to deliver this significant redevelopment on London’s Southbank represented a
huge opportunity for Multiplex. Originally designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, this Grade II listed building was his last major work, and is therefore of significant architectural importance.
Under the leadership of Matt Price, the Multiplex team at 76 Southbank has collaborated with the wider project team to prioritise decarbonisation throughout the process, working closely with the supply chain to ensure a sensitive redesign that reflected our shared sustainability goals, retaining
80% of the existing structure. Construction began in June 2023 and the recent topping out and successful completion of the structural remodelling works mark a significant achievement in the journey.
As completion draws closer, we encourage you all to go and visit the project and would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to the incredible team involved at 76 Southbank – you’re encouraging a better future. Throughout the course of the build so far, the project has facilitated the following Social Value achievements:

Argyle Street
We are thrilled with the recent delivery of Argyle Street, an innovate hub for financial services firm JP Morgan and the latest addition to Glasgow’s developing skyline. In the heart of the city’s bustling financial district, the site was not without significant constraints, but our team pulled together to deliver a best-in-class asset.
As the first Multiplex project to use a hybrid generator, Argyle Street is a prime example of what we can achieve when we commit to responsible construction, and we’re proud to say that the development has achieved BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold Standard. As with all our projects, Social Value was a key focus at Argyle Street.
Throughout the course of the build, we engaged over 350 students with the project, delivered 18 work placements and 22 apprenticeships, as well as involving 41 new entrants. We also raised £21k for charity. In collaboration with local architects Cooper Cromar, Argyle Street stands tall as an example of our expanding Scottish portfolio.

My Role at Multiplex
What’s happening across the business... Supply Chain
Earlier this month we held our increasingly significant Annual Supply Chain Business Update, which took place over two days and four sessions on 2nd & 16th May. The sessions provided an opportunity to connect with our supply chain partners and share crucial updates about our business trajectory. Held at 22 Bishopsgate, we saw a hugely successful turnout of over 250 subcontractors.
Speakers provided insights into recent successes, future projects, operations, design, and upcoming plans, while also fostering open discussions on how we can better support one another. Head of Supply Chain, Chris Fairhall, notably revealed the results of our recent ‘Supply Chain Perception Survey’. The survey provided valuable insights into how our supply chain view our performance.
Ever wondered what the role of an estimator is? Click the video to watch the latest episode of ‘My Role at Multiplex’ with Lauren Gamble, Senior Estimator.
At Multiplex, we believe that our people define our business. These videos aim to showcase the depth of knowledge and expertise within our company, allowing insight into the work your colleagues do, how it aligns with your own role, and its impact on the broader business.
Overall findings were encouraging, highlighting our commitment to project quality, environmental and social initiatives, behavioural importance, and health & safety and welfare facilities.
Thank you to all those who attended and contributed to the success of the event.

Summer Internships & Placements
As summer is fast approaching, we expect some of you will receive requests for summer placements, internships, or work experience. We always strive to accommodate requests where possible; it is a highly valuable opportunity for students and Multiplex, and a fantastic way to pipeline talent into Multiplex post-school or university.
To ensure everyone gets the most out of this experience please share any request for a placement with the Social Value team and HR before any arrangements are made, this is so we can assess the request and correctly manage it. Here is some feedback we’ve had from recent successful placements!
“I would love to give a big thank you for the work experience placement the other week, it was an amazing experience and I’m very grateful for the opportunity! I really appreciate it. Thanks!”
“I wanted to thank you and every one of the teams that hosted me and took me on the work experience throughout the week. It was my first work experience and I enjoyed it very much. I felt very welcomed and was given a great insight into not only Multiplex but construction and other aspects that I have never imagined had so much importance when working in such projects at such large scale. Thank you for making such daunting thought of going into industry and being on the job feel nice and comfortable.”
If you are interested in taking a summer intern on at your project, please reach out to HR or the Social Value team, and we will do our best to allocate a student to your team.

New Policy! Carer’s Leave.
From 6 April new UK legislation came into place –the Carer’s Leave Regulations 2024 – recognising the challenges that carers face while trying to balance the demands of caring, work, and looking after their own health. Our policy sets out the statutory right of employees to unpaid carer’s leave to provide or arrange care for a dependant with a long-term care need, and other support that we offer to combine work with care.
A carer is anyone with caring responsibilities who provides care, assistance and support to any other individual who may be seriously ill or unable to care for themselves. We recognise that caring can be unpredictable and emotionally upsetting. You may acquire caring responsibilities overnight or caring responsibilities may develop over time. We realise that caring is a subject that not everyone finds it easy to talk about. However, we urge you to be as open as possible about any issues that you are experiencing and talk to your line manager or HR Business Partner, to ensure that you are provided with the right level of support.
Who is entitled to unpaid Carer’s Leave?
Whatever your length of service, you have a statutory right to take carer’s leave to provide or arrange care for a dependent if they have a longterm care need.
How much Carer’s Leave can I take?
The amount of carer’s leave that you can take is up to one week in any 12-month rolling period. A week of carer’s leave is the same duration as your normal working week. You can take the leave in one continuous block, as individual days, or as half days.
How do I find more information?

Data Protection
6 Years of the GDPR
It is 6 years since the GDPR was introduced in May 2018 – we have since had a global pandemic, a shift to remote and hybrid working, and now a growing awareness and widespread adoption of generative AI.
The GDPR placed tougher obligations on organisations. Handling personal data incorrectly could have serious negative implications for any organisation including regulatory action and heavy fines as high as £17.5 million, or 4% of global annual turnover, as well as reputational damage.
Here are some blockbuster GDPR Fines of 2023
• Meta Platforms (Ireland)
€1.2 billion
• Meta Platforms - Facebook & Instagram (Ireland)

• WhatsApp (Ireland)
€225 million
• TikTok (Ireland)

• TikTok (UK)

• WhatsApp (Ireland)

• Clearview AI Inc. (France)

The most common incident breaches according to the ICO are ‘Data emailed to incorrect recipient’, ‘Unauthorised access’ and ‘Phishing’. Up to 90% of data breaches involve human error, therefore data protection training is an absolute necessity which can reduce mistakes, and help with damage control if a data breach occurs.
Watch out for the rollout of this year’s refresher GDPR Training coming out in June…

Health & Safety
Dangers of Dust
Over 500 construction workers in the UK are believed to die from silicosis in the UK each year.
Multiplex have developed a strategy to improve worker respiratory health which has been driven by the continuing challenges faced by the industry and our operations in achieving the required standards in preventing exposure and designing out products or activities which release respirable silica dust.
Our strategy will:
• Put worker protection from silica dust at the forefront of the Multiplex health agenda.
• Make it common knowledge and an expectation with our supply chain.
• Focus on designing out risk and exploring technological developments in off-site and on-site practices.
• Through measurement and monitoring, gather targeted data to track performance.
• Show consistent improvements in positive practices and significant reductions in instances of insufficient measures identified through Health Intervention Tours (HITs), spot checks and inspections.
Technology in this area is constantly evolving. We recently procured two ‘Dust Canary’ digital dust monitors that have become integral to our Health Intervention Tours across projects. They alert us to areas with significant dust concentrations in real-time, allowing immediate intervention. Data collected enables us to download information, track trends and provide a risk profile for the project indicating high concentration areas.
We have also been exhibiting the Clean-Space positive pressure air – fed respirator system at our Dust Roadshows and the Supply Chain Updates held at 22 Bishopsgate.
Over the next two years we will work to achieve the highest standards of respiratory health protection. We will be gathering data on the prevalence of artificial stone in use on our projects and where this presents a direct hazard to workers on site. We will also define and agree enhanced standards of defense against silica exposure for our supply chain, such as ensuring health surveillance is undertaken. Further work will also be undertaken to identify exposure risks in the delivery of key packages to identify areas of improvement.
Silica dust has been recognised in other regions of the world as the most significant cause of death through occupational ill health since asbestos. At Multiplex, we want to build a better future. Together, we can all contribute to reducing harmful levels of exposure through improvements in design, procurement and installation to help our workers to live long and healthy lives.

Neurodiversity Awareness Workshop
We know that 1 in 4 people in the construction industry are known to be neurodiverse, however many people do not necessarily understand neurodiversity and what this means. As part of our Diversity and Inclusion programme, we have developed a Neurodiversity Awareness Workshop in partnership with Gary Owen, our company psychotherapist; and we will be rolling out these workshops during 2024 and early 2025.
Gary has extensive experience of working with neurodiversity and will be facilitating the workshops. These will be held across all projects, including 99BG. This is an important subject, and we are requesting that everyone in the business commits to attending one of the sessions.
The Social Value and Community Team will be supporting the rollout of the workshops across our projects and will share these invitations with you in due course. If you have any questions, please contact your Social Value and Community Manager or Claire Scrimgeour.

On the 5th May 2024, Matt Price successfully ran the Copenhagen marathon in support of the Stanhope Foundation – raising a monster £4610.00! The Stanhope Foundation supports charities whose work helps find hope and pride through meaningful employment.
Matt said “It’s thanks to the supply chain and colleagues that I was able to get such generous support, for this great cause. It was my 5th marathon, having ran in London (x2), New York, and Berlin previously; and almost 20 years after running my first (London in 2006 @ 3:14), I managed to run a time of 3:19. It felt good, one, as I had my friends and family supporting on the sidelines; and two, all that hard work running everywhere for three months prior paid off! If you were ever thinking of running a marathon, give it a go; and do yourself a favour, run it for a charity, as they need it more than you do.”
