Morton-on-Swale is a rural village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, within easy reach of the nearby market towns of Northallerton and Darlington, which both provide excellent shopping facilities, together with transport links via the A1m, A66 and main line railway stations (Northallerton to London 2h 20 minutes, York 18 minutes, Leeds 40 minutes). The market town of Richmond is also within easy reach, alongside the further surrounding countryside and North York Moors National Park. Nearby Bedale is known as the Gateway to The Dales and is brimming with beautiful walks.

The stone bridge over the Swale was built in 1747-8 and featured prominently as a landmark in ITV4's aerial coverage of the Tour de Yorkshire in 2018, which passed through Morton-on-Swale during Stage 3 of the race from Richmond to Scarborough.

There are two village schools: Ainderby Steeple Church of England Primary School, which, notwithstanding its name, is situated on Station Lane in Morton and is set within the catchment area of nearby Northallerton School, providing secondary education and sixth form facilities. The village is well served by a half-hourly bus service in both directions, which runs between Bedale and Northallerton from Monday to Saturday, with the first Northallerton-bound bus at around 7.40am and the last around 18:15.

Southbound, trains generally run from Northallerton to Manchester Victoria via York, Leeds and Huddersfield. Northbound, there is a service to Saltburn via Middlesbrough, as well as Newcastle. London North Eastern Railway serves the station with trains between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley.
